Seattle receiver Sidney Rice has retired due to a history of concussions, according to ProFootballTalk. | 07/23/2014 4:13 PM
NewsSeattle receiver Sidney Rice has retired due to a history of concussions, according to ProFootballTalk.
ImpactThe 27-year-old had one huge season -- 1,312 yards and eight touchdowns on 83 catches in 2009 with the Minnesota Vikings -- but hasn't been able to stay healthy. His other six seasons, he averaged 10.8 games, 26.67 catches, 380 yards and 3.67 touchdowns.
Sidney Rice competing for roster spot | 07/20/2014 11:33 AM
NewsESPN Seahawks reporter Terry Blount considers Sidney Rice the "odd man out" at receiver entering training camp.
ImpactBlount left Rice off his initial 53-man roster projection. Rice doesn't contribute on special teams and has lost a considerable amount of explosion after numerous injuries. If he's not a top-three receiver, Rice doesn't bring much to the team. He's competing with rookie Kevin Norwood and special teamer Ricardo Lockette for a roster spot. Rice brings zilch to the table in terms of fantasy value.
Sidney Rice not ready for 'day one' of camp? | 06/19/2014 4:55 PM
NewsSeahawks coach Pete Carroll expects Sidney Rice (knee) to be ready for training camp, but perhaps not by "day one."

Sidney Rice expected to be ready for camp | 05/27/2014 7:27 PM
NewsSidney Rice (knee) has been limited to individual drills in OTAs, but is expected to be ready for training camp.
ImpactCoach Pete Carroll said Rice is "ahead of schedule" in his recovery from his 2013 ACL tear. Rice went down in Week 8. Among the league's most brittle players, we'd take a believe-it-when-you-see-it view on Rice's health.
SEA expects Sid Rice to be ready Week 1 | 05/01/2014 8:29 AM
NewsGM John Schneider said he expects Sidney Rice (knee) to be fully recovered by Week 1.
Sidney Rice brings injury red flags, as usual | 04/17/2014 9:50 AM
NewsSidney Rice has played in 16 games just twice in his seven-year career.
ImpactThe oft-injured Rice has missed 25 games over the last four seasons and is now coming off his most series ailment yet -- a torn ACL. Despite being just 27 years old, his body is beaten down. Rice was re-signed by the Seahawks Wednesday to be part of the group that replaces Golden Tate, not the whole answer. Percy Harvin, Doug Baldwin and Jermaine Kearse will get plenty of snaps in the Seattle's run-heavy scheme.

NewsSeahawks re-signed WR Sidney Rice to a one-year contract.
Sidney Rice visiting the Jets on Wednesday | 04/16/2014 6:32 PM
NewsFree agent Sidney Rice is visiting the Jets.
Adam Schefter on Twitter
ImpactAfter locking up Chris Johnson earlier Wednesday, the Jets are now turning their attention to Rice. Rice was just cleared for football activities earlier this week, five months after tearing his ACL. He and GM John Idzik know each other from their days together in Seattle. Rice would be a passable No. 2 receiver opposite Eric Decker with Jeremy Kerley manning the slot. Rice should be cheap.
Report: Sidney Rice a long shot for Panthers | 04/15/2014 11:41 AM
NewsESPN Panthers reporter David Newton considers free agent Sidney Rice a "long shot" to sign in Carolina.
ImpactRice would be a good fit with the Panthers and shouldn't be expensive, but Carolina has next to no money to spend and doesn't have a lot of ways to create more cap space. The Seahawks have over $15 million in cap room and would be our guess for Rice's landing spot on an incentive-based, one-year deal.
Giants not expected to be hot after Sid Rice | 04/15/2014 10:18 AM
NewsESPN New York doesn't expect the Giants to make a serious run at free agent Sidney Rice.
ESPN New York
ImpactRice was linked to the Giants, along with the Panthers, Seahawks, and Saints, by Profootballtalk on Monday. The G-Men could get involved if Rice's market is colder than expected, but they're not looking to dish out much cash. The Giants could use a No. 2/3 receiver type, but they're not in dire need of one with Rueben Randle and Jerrel Jernigan ready to take the next step behind Victor Cruz.
Report: Seahawks interested in Sidney Rice | 04/15/2014 9:46 AM
NewsThe Everett Herald reports the Seahawks would be interested in re-signing free agent Sidney Rice on a low-cost, short-term deal.
ImpactRice shouldn't be commanding any significant money coming off a torn ACL and multiple injury-riddled seasons. After losing Golden Tate and not addressing receiver in free agency, bringing Rice back would make plenty of sense. Doug Baldwin and Jermaine Kearse could be in line for expanded roles, however.
Panthers have interest in Sidney Rice | 04/14/2014 7:54 PM
NewsThe Charlotte Observer expects the Panthers to show interest in free agent Sidney Rice but at the "right price."
Joe Person on Twitter
ImpactRice (torn ACL) was cleared for football activities on Monday and will now look to catch on with a team prior to the draft. He shouldn't be commanding anything more than a short-term deal with little guaranteed money due to injury concerns and average numbers. Rice would be a huge upgrade in Carolina, however.
Free agent Sidney Rice gets medical clearance | 04/14/2014 2:39 PM
NewsA league source tells Profootballtalk.com free agent Sidney Rice (ACL surgery) has been cleared for football activities.
Profootballtalk on NBC Sports
ImpactHe got cleared by Dr. James Andrews. PFT's Mike Florio reports the Seahawks, Giants, Saints, and Panthers all have "interest of some degree" in Rice, who has been incredibly injury prone in recent seasons but is still only 27 years old. He played college football at South Carolina and would be an excellent fit with the Panthers. Long-armed Rice has always possessed a large catch radius, which would complement Cam Newton's somewhat erratic ball placement.
Seattle not out of the mix for Sid Rice | 04/03/2014 12:24 PM
NewsESPN's John Clayton says it's still possible the Seahawks will re-sign free agent WR Sidney Rice.
ImpactTeams are taking their time with Rice as he comes off an October ACL tear. He'd at least be a fit on paper in Seattle as an outside receiver capable of helping to fill Golden Tate's shoes. The Jets and Saints have also been linked to the oft-injured 27-year-old.
Jets and Saints are interested in Sidney Rice | 03/17/2014 12:05 PM
NewsThe Jets and Saints are reportedly interested in free agent WR Sidney Rice.
Ian Rapoport on Twitter
ImpactPer NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Seahawks would also welcome a return. The Jets are certainly the neediest of the group, even after signing Eric Decker to be their No. 1. Still, Rice would just be a flier because he's coming off an ACL tear, was among the more injury-prone players in the league even before that and has only had one high-quality season (2009 with Brett Favre's Vikings).
Seahawks interested in re-signing Sidney Rice | 03/13/2014 8:56 PM
NewsNFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Seahawks are interested in re-signing free agent Sidney Rice.
Ian Rapoport on Twitter
ImpactRice could take Golden Tate's old spot on the perimeter of Seattle's offense. Rice was released by the Seahawks in a needed cap maneuver, but the club still believes he can help their passing game. When healthy, Rice remains an effective winner of jump-balls and can score touchdowns. He's also only 27.
Sidney Rice (knee) to be cleared for OTAs | 03/07/2014 10:54 AM
NewsUSA Today's Tom Pelissero reports free agent Sidney Rice (knee) is "on track" to be cleared for the start of OTAs.
Tom Pelissero on Twitter
ImpactRice tore his ACL on October 29. His new team might not push him much in OTAs, but Rice should be full go for minicamp and training camp this summer. He's been linked to the Panthers. Coach Pete Carroll also didn't rule out a return to the Seahawks. Injury-prone Rice will likely have to settle for a one-year deal.
Panthers may be landing spot for Sidney Rice | 03/01/2014 8:00 PM
NewsThe Charlotte Observer considers the Panthers a possible landing spot for free agent Sidney Rice.
ImpactRice played college football at South Carolina and could be a fit at Z-receiver in the Panthers' offense. He's currently rehabbing from ACL surgery and is expected to be ready for training camp. Rice has major injury concerns, but would be a low-cost signing. Carolina is just $8.54 million under the 2014 cap.
Seahawks release Sidney Rice, save $7.3M | 02/21/2014 12:20 PM
NewsSeahawks released WR Sidney Rice.
Adam Schefter on Twitter
ImpactRice, 27, signed a five-year, $41 million contract with Seattle in July of 2011 and missed 15 of a possible 48 regular season games with various injuries. His 2013 campaign ended in late October due to a torn ACL. Prior to that, he dealt with concussions. It was a no-brainer move for the Seahawks to cut ties with Rice and save $7.3 million versus the cap, as they need money to re-sign far more important players. Rice is said to be "way ahead" of schedule in his rehab but will almost certainly have to settle for a one-year deal in an effort to prove he's healthy. Rice's body is breaking down. He caught just 97 passes in three seasons with Seattle.
Carroll says Rice is way ahead of schedule | 02/06/2014 8:21 AM
NewsPete Carroll said Sidney Rice is way ahead of schedule in his recovery from ACL surgery.
ImpactRice is roughly 3.5 months removed from his tear. "Within weeks he was back up with almost total reflection and extension and it's just almost an unheard of type of recovery," Carroll said. "It's so far ahead of schedule, so that's great for Sid. We'll see how that turns out, but right off the bat we've never seen anybody (recover) like that." Rice is fully expected to be cut, thus saving the Seahawks $7 million in cap room. Much like Jeremy Maclin, Rice will likely have to accept a one-year prove-it deal in free agency.

Seahawks put Sidney Rice (torn ACL) on I.R. | 10/30/2013 4:09 PM
NewsSeahawks placed WR Sidney Rice on injured reserve with a torn ACL, ending his season.
ImpactRice tore his ACL and suffered a concussion is Monday night's win over the Rams. He's caught 97 passes for 1,463 yards and 12 touchdowns across 33 games played with Seattle in three seasons. Rice has likely played his last down as a member of the team barring a dramatic pay cut in the offseason. Rice will count $9.7 million against the salary cap in 2014 if he's on the roster compared to $2.4 million if he's released. Jermaine Kearse will replace Rice in the starting lineup until Percy Harvin (hip) is ready, which could be Sunday.
Report: Seahawks' Sidney Rice has torn ACL | 10/29/2013 5:40 PM
NewsProfootballtalk reports Sidney Rice has been diagnosed with a torn ACL.
Profootballtalk on Twitter
ImpactRice had been dealing with knee problems since the offseason, and also suffered a concussion in Monday night's win. The head injury is as concerning as the torn ACL for a player whose 2011 was cut short by two concussions in three weeks. When the 2013 season ends, Rice will have appeared in just 39 of a possible 64 games going back to 2009. It's quite possible Percy Harvin (hip) will take Rice's place in the starting lineup this Sunday.
Sidney Rice has concussion-like symptoms | 10/29/2013 1:30 PM
NewsSidney Rice is dealing with concussion-like symptoms.
John Boyle on Twitter
ImpactCoach Pete Carroll made the disclosure in a Tuesday radio interview. Rice also suffered a knee injury in Monday night's win. With the Seahawks on a short week, it's unlikely Rice is ready to face the Bucs. Rice ended 2011 on injured reserve after suffering two concussions in three weeks.
Seahawks had no update on Rice after game | 10/29/2013 8:18 AM
NewsThe Seahawks had no update on Sidney Rice following Monday night's win at St. Louis.
ImpactCoach Pete Carroll said Rice "banged his knee" and also his head. When asked how long his starting receiver might be out, he said, "I don't know that." Rice has been dealing with knee issues since training camp and has a history of concussions. Through eight games, he's on pace to catch just 30 passes for 462 yards with six touchdowns.
Sidney Rice injures knee on Monday night | 10/28/2013 9:53 PM
NewsSidney Rice was forced from Monday night's game against the Rams with a knee injury and is doubtful to return.
ImpactRice was targeted three times before leaving midway through the second quarter but didn't register a catch. He's battled knee problems in the past. Golden Tate and Doug Baldwin will be the top two receivers the rest of the night.
Sidney Rice goes 3/501/ versus Arizona | 10/18/2013 12:38 AM
NewsSidney Rice caught three passes for 50 yards and a touchdown in Seattle's Week 7 win over the Cardinals.
ImpactRice's first grab was a wide-open 31-yard touchdown on a broken play - where Rice showed great awareness by breaking off his route and streaking deep as Russell Wilson bailed on the pocket - while he made a phenomenal 16-yard grab on third down with time running out in the first half. Otherwise, he drew only four targets, and was held to three catches or fewer for the sixth time in seven games. Rice has just 15 total grabs. He's a low-end WR4.
Sidney Rice goes 2/35 versus Titans | 10/13/2013 7:54 PM
NewsSidney Rice caught two passes for 35 yards in Seattle's Week 6 win over the Titans.
Sidney Rice gets two TDs in blowout win | 09/22/2013 7:47 PM
NewsSidney Rice caught five passes for 79 yards with two touchdowns in Sunday's Week 3 blowout of the Jaguars.
ImpactDon't overreact to this line. Rice got open at will against the Jags painfully young and inept secondary. The same thing won't happen against the Texans corner duo of Jonathan Joseph and Kareem Jackson in Week 4. Remember that in the first two weeks of the season, Rice totaled three catches for 48 yards.
Sidney Rice held to one catch in Week 2 | 09/16/2013 2:20 AM
NewsSidney Rice caught one pass for 13 yards in Sunday night's Week 2 win over the 49ers.
ImpactRice was held without a catch through two-plus quarters and was a non-factor on offense. He led the Seahawks with five targets, but dropped a touchdown in the second half and picked up an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Rice is nothing more than a low-upside WR3 for next week's matchup with the Jaguars.
Sidney Rice listed as probable | 09/13/2013 5:44 PM
NewsSidney Rice (probable, knee) practiced in full Friday.
ImpactConsider Rice an unattractive WR3 in Sunday's matchup with the 49ers.
Sidney Rice upgraded to 'full' on Thursday | 09/12/2013 7:49 PM
NewsSidney Rice (knee) was a full participant in Thursday's practice after being limited on Wednesday.
ImpactRice's practice reps figure to be carefully rationed this season. He's Rotoworld's No. 50 receiver for Week 2.
Sidney Rice limited in Seahawks practice | 09/11/2013 7:54 PM
NewsSidney Rice (knee) was limited in Seahawks practice Wednesday.
ImpactRice has a bum knee, for which he traveled to Switzerland at the start of camp, seeking out treatment. He's likely going to be limited in practice all year. Rice caught two balls for 35 yards in Week 1 and is a low-ceiling WR4.
Sidney Rice catches two passes in 2013 debut | 09/08/2013 5:18 PM
NewsSidney Rice caught two passes for 35 yards in Seattle's Week 1 win over Carolina.
ImpactIt was Rice's first game action of any kind this year; he missed the entire preseason as he worked his way back from a knee injury. Rice will have better weeks, but we still don't like him as anything more than a WR4.
Sidney Rice practices in full Wednesday | 09/04/2013 6:54 PM
NewsSidney Rice (knee) practiced in full Wednesday.
ImpactCoach Pete Carroll already deemed Rice ready to rock for Sunday's opener versus Carolina. He's nothing more than a WR4 with minimal upside.
Sidney Rice (knee) ready for Week 1 | 09/04/2013 3:35 PM
NewsSeahawks coach Pete Carroll declared Sidney Rice (knee) ready for Week 1.
Liz Mathews on Twitter
ImpactRice returned to practice Wednesday and will start opposite Golden Tate in the season opener against the Panthers. He sat out the entire preseason after undergoing a July knee procedure and remains an injury risk going into the year. Rice has little upside in Seattle's run-heavy offense.

NewsSeahawks coach Pete Carroll expects Sidney Rice (knee) to be ready for Week 1.

ImpactRice sat out the entire preseason, but it was mostly precautionary. Injury prone with limited upside in the Seahawks' run-heavy offense, Rice is a WR4.
Sidney Rice might sit out entire preseason | 08/20/2013 5:20 PM
NewsSidney Rice (knee) might sit out the entire preseason as a precaution.
ImpactRice has resumed practicing after undergoing a platelet-rich plasma therapy "like" treatment in Switzerland earlier this month, but the Seahawks have little to gain by using their injury-prone $41 million wideout in exhibition action. Rice is a high-risk, medium-reward WR3/4 in Seattle's run-heavy offense.
Sidney Rice describes Switzerland procedure | 08/02/2013 9:25 PM
NewsSidney Rice described the knee procedure he underwent in Switzerland as similar to platelet-rich plasma therapy.
ImpactHe needed the procedure due to patellar tendinitis. Rice scheduled it "earlier in the offseason, a little bit after OTAs" because he's been "having a sore knee for quite a while now." Rice plans to return to practice on Sunday, but won't know if the treatment worked for "a few weeks." We'd advise staying away from Rice in fantasy drafts, and instead targeting Golden Tate.
Sidney Rice expected to practice Sunday | 08/02/2013 6:35 PM
NewsThe Seahawks expect Sidney Rice (knee) to resume practicing on Sunday.
Liz Mathews on Twitter
ImpactRice's practice reps are likely to be managed throughout camp as he returns from Switzerland, where the 27-year-old underwent a "non-surgical procedure" on his troublesome knee. The Seahawks could go as far as limiting Rice's in-season snaps in hopes of keeping him healthy. He's a fantasy pick to avoid.
Sidney Rice returns from Switzerland | 08/02/2013 9:22 AM
NewsSidney Rice has returned from Switzerland, where he received non-surgical treatment for knee pain.
Ed Werder on Twitter
ImpactRice's trip to Switzerland earlier this week came as a surprise. He's not expected to miss any preseason action, per coach Pete Carroll. Carroll has always seen things with rose-colored glasses, and we wouldn't be surprised if Rice sat out much of the rest of the summer. With Percy Harvin (hip) sidelined for 3-4 months, Rice is locked into an every-down role. He's a WR3 in a run-heavy attack.
Sidney Rice in Switzerland for knee treatment | 07/30/2013 4:03 PM
NewsESPN Seattle's Liz Mathews reports Sidney Rice is in Switzerland "getting some sort of knee treatment."
Liz Mathews on Twitter
ImpactOh. The word comes straight from coach Pete Carroll, who insists that Rice will not only be ready for Week 1, but the preseason. Although the news came completely out of nowhere - Rice's status was never updated after he was spotted in crutches following Seattle's Divisional Round loss - it's hardly a surprise considering his injury history. Despite Carroll's assurance, we'd consider him questionable for Week 1 at the moment. With the Seahawks also awaiting word on Percy Harvin's (hip) status, receiver is suddenly a question mark. Rice should still be considered a high-risk, high-reward WR3.
Sidney Rice entering final year with SEA? | 07/17/2013 8:33 AM
NewsESPN 710 believes Sidney Rice could be entering his final year with the Seahawks.
ESPN 710 Seattle
ImpactRice is in the third year of a five-year, $41 million deal he inked as a free agent in 2011. He's owed $8.5 million in 2014 and $9 million in 2015, numbers that will be hard for the Seahawks to swallow because Percy Harvin will cost $13 million against the cap in 2014. As the No. 2 wideout in a run-heavy scheme, Rice could become expendable.
Sidney Rice lacks targets to be a No. 1 | 02/05/2013 12:26 PM
NewsThe Tacoma News Tribune considers Sidney Rice a No. 1 receiver in the NFL even though "he isn't targeted like one."
Tacoma News Tribune
ImpactIt's a very reasonable assessment. Despite finally playing in all 16 games this year, Rice saw just 80 targets. That ranked him 73rd in the league, behind the likes of Chris Givens, Benjamin Watson and Nate Washington. Rice still came up with a 50/748/7 line, but the Seahawks' run-heavy scheme puts a damper on his 2013 outlook.
Sidney Rice on crutches Monday | 01/16/2013 9:38 AM
NewsSidney Rice (knee) was spotted on crutches Monday.
ImpactThere's no sign that Rice is dealing with a serious injury or needs surgery, but we can add it to the list of nagging issues that bothered him this season. Despite playing in all 16 games for just the second time in his six-year career and first time since 2009, he was rarely operating at 100 percent. Rice won't be 27 until September, but his accumulation of injuries and the Seahawks' run-heavy offense are concerns heading into 2013.
Sidney Rice held to 60 yards in playoff loss | 01/13/2013 7:56 PM
NewsSidney Rice caught four passes for 60 yards in Sunday's Divisional round loss at Atlanta.
ImpactRice tied Zach Miller with a team-high nine targets, but had to contend with Asante Samuel sticky coverage. Russell Wilson's nominal No. 1 receiver finished the season 29th in fantasy points, though his most impressive accomplishment was making it through 18 games while dealing with knee, foot, and concussion injuries.
Sidney Rice held to 27 yards in playoff win | 01/06/2013 8:57 PM
NewsSidney Rice caught just one pass for 27 yards in Sunday's Wild Card round victory over the Redskins.
ImpactThe one catch was a toe-dragging sideline beauty that set up Steven Hauschka's first field goal. Rice was targeted just four times on a day when the Seahawks enjoyed a lot more success on the ground. He has another tough matchup next week against Asante Samuel and the Falcons.
