|Assets:||A very strong runner with decent speed and cut-back abilities. Displays a powerful first step and surprising acceleration when he sees a hole. A real fighter in heavy traffic. Hard to bring down.|
|Flaws:||Doesn't have elite wheels. A bit raw overall. May be more ideally suited to fullback than tailback (but needs to be a better blocker). Not much of an option in passing plays.|

Arians says Dwyer in shape, catching well | 07/02/2014 8:54 AM
NewsDuring minicamp, coach Bruce Arians said Jonathan Dwyer was "in better shape and he's running routes and catching the ball better than I remember."
Jonathan Dwyer's role murky for Cardinals | 06/16/2014 11:31 AM
NewsJonathan Dwyer said he's unsure exactly what his role will be with the Cardinals.
ImpactThe Arizona Republic confirms the obvious -- that the running game will flow through Andre Ellington. But there are still touches to be had here, especially in short-yardage and goal-line sets. Dwyer, who was pursued in free agency by former Steelers assistant turned Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians, will be battling with Stepfan Taylor for that work. He's ran with everyone from the first- to third-stringers during OTAs.
Cardinals sign Jonathan Dwyer to 1-year deal | 03/12/2014 9:37 PM
NewsCardinals signed RB Jonathan Dwyer to a one-year contract.
ImpactDwyer, 24, finished 2013 in Pittsburgh with 197 yards on 49 carries (4.0 YPC) and eight receptions. He's a devastating pass protector and excels in short yardage. Although Dwyer lacks a high ceiling, he's a sensible signing in Arizona due to his familiarity with Bruce Arians' offense. He's a better talent than Stepfan Taylor. If this is all the Cards add at tailback during the offseason, it'll be good news for Andre Ellington's fantasy outlook.
Steelers could re-sign Jonathan Dwyer | 02/08/2014 2:32 PM
NewsESPN.com's Scott Brown believes the Steelers will attempt to re-sign free agent Jonathan Dwyer.
ImpactDwyer was Le'Veon Bell's primary backup in 2013, finishing with 49 carries and 197 yards. A short-yardage specialist, he could return as veteran insurance and shouldn't command much guaranteed money. The Steelers could also look to add depth at running back through the draft or free agency.
Jon Dwyer finishes season with 197 yards | 12/29/2013 6:04 PM
NewsJonathan Dwyer rushed three times for 10 yards in Pittsburgh's Week 17 win over the Browns.
ImpactAn on-again/off-again short-yardage specialist, Dwyer finishes 2013 with 49 carries for 197 yards. An impending free agent, there's no guarantee Dwyer will be back in the Steel City next season. Le'Veon Bell has put a stranglehold on starting duties for the Steelers.
Dwyer goes for 41 total yards in win | 11/10/2013 4:16 PM
NewsJonathan Dwyer rushed eight times for 38 yards and caught a three-yard pass in Pittsburgh's Week 10 win over Buffalo.
ImpactDwyer and Felix Jones (four carries, 16 yards) are the Steelers' "breather backs" behind Le'Veon Bell (25 touches). Dwyer would need a Bell injury to be worth grabbing in 12- and 14-team fantasy leagues.
Jonathan Dwyer gets one carry in loss | 11/03/2013 8:45 PM
NewsJonathan Dwyer rushed one time for 30 yards in Sunday's Week 9 loss at New England.
ImpactDwyer also caught one pass for 23 yards. But the big plays weren't enough to earn him any playing time over rookie Le'Veon Bell, who is locked in as a workhorse. Dwyer is waiver-wire fodder.
Jonathan Dwyer rushes for 9 yards in Week 8 | 10/27/2013 7:44 PM
NewsJonathan Dwyer rushed three times for nine yards in the Steelers' Week 8 loss to the Raiders.
ImpactDwyer was the No. 2 back behind Le'Veon Bell on Sunday; he's essentially a "breather" player who only gets snaps when Bell needs to catch his breath. Dwyer isn't much of a fantasy handcuff because he'd likely share backfield duties with Felix Jones if Bell ever suffered an injury.
Jonathan Dwyer gets one carry | 10/20/2013 7:29 PM
NewsJonathan Dwyer rushed one time for four yards in Sunday's Week 7 win over the Ravens.
ImpactDwyer is a power back that has no role because feature back Le'Veon Bell has more power.
Jonathan Dwyer held to two carries | 09/29/2013 6:27 PM
NewsJonathan Dwyer rushed two times for seven yards in Week 4 against the Vikings.
ImpactDwyer barely saw the field behind Le'Veon Bell and Felix Jones. He's no longer needed in pass protection or on third downs and can be safely dropped in the majority of fantasy leagues.
Dwyer leads Steelers in Week 3 carries | 09/23/2013 1:07 AM
NewsJonathan Dwyer had 12 carries for 39 yards in Sunday night's Week 3 loss to the Bears.
ImpactDwyer was used in a change-of-pace role behind Felix Jones and was the preferred option in pass protection over Isaac Redman. He had an impressive 25-yard run in first half and took over as the lead back after Jones fumbled in third quarter. Dwyer is nothing more than a desperation RB4 in re-draft leagues.
Dwyer plays two snaps in return to Steelers | 09/17/2013 1:07 AM
NewsJonathan Dwyer rushed one time for two yards in Monday night's Week 2 loss to Cincinnati.
ImpactDwyer played just two snaps. He was only in the game in the first quarter as the No. 2 back while Isaac Redman was being tested for a concussion. Dwyer is obviously well off the fantasy radar. He's behind Redman and Felix Jones.
Steelers will bring back RB Jonathan Dwyer | 09/09/2013 8:03 AM
NewsSteelers will re-sign RB Jonathan Dwyer.
Ed Bouchette on Twitter
ImpactDwyer returns to the team that cut him nine days ago out of desperation, not desire. During Sunday's embarrassing Week 1 loss to the Titans, starter Isaac Redman was benched for ineffectiveness and two botched exchanges. Backup LaRod Stephens-Howling blew out his knee and newly signed Felix Jones barely played after whiffing on a blitz pickup. Unless Le'Veon Bell (foot) can get back for Week 2, look for Dwyer to step right back in and share time with Redman against the Bengals next Monday night. If Bell can get cleared, the Steelers will lean heavily on the rookie right away.
Patriots work out Jonathan Dwyer, others | 09/06/2013 6:11 PM
NewsFree agent Jonathan Dwyer was among 11 players worked out by the Patriots on Friday.
Field Yates on Twitter
ImpactAdditionally at the tryout were ex-Packers QBs Graham Harrell and B.J. Coleman. It appears the Pats were simply updating their emergency list. Dwyer is still only 24 and looked pretty good this preseason, but there are concerns around the league about his passion for football. He does want to keep playing.
Jonathan Dwyer didn't take job seriously? | 09/03/2013 10:23 AM
NewsAccording to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Jonathan Dwyer was waived in part because "his coaches did not feel he took his job seriously enough."
ImpactThis helps explain why Dwyer was cut even though the Steelers are without Le'Veon Bell (foot) for at least a couple more weeks. He showed up to spring workouts at least 25 pounds overweight and never got his nose in front of Isaac Redman. Dwyer went unclaimed on waivers and now reportedly has a few workouts lined up.
Jonathan Dwyer goes unclaimed on waivers | 09/01/2013 6:45 PM
NewsEx-Steelers RB Jonathan Dwyer passed through waivers unclaimed and is now a free agent.
Jason La Canfora on Twitter
ImpactWorking against Dwyer was a $1.323 million base salary. We'd be surprised if he weren't signed quickly for closer to the fourth-year NFL minimum. Dwyer is a somewhat slow-footed power back who lacks versatility, but he can still add early-down thump to a running game. He's also only 24 years old.
Surprise: Steelers bail on RB Jonathan Dwyer | 08/31/2013 3:44 PM
NewsSteelers waived RB Jonathan Dwyer.
ImpactDwyer averaged just 3.99 YPC on 156 rushes last season and showed up to spring workouts at least 25 pounds overweight. Still, it's stunning that the Steelers have cut him with Le'Veon Bell (foot) sidelined. It could be a sign that Bell will be back sooner rather than later. In the meantime, Isaac Redman is the heavy favorite for feature back duties while Felix Jones and LaRod Stephens-Howling play supporting roles.
Jonathan Dwyer to have role in PIT committee | 08/29/2013 10:23 AM
NewsESPN expects Jonathan Dwyer to get "his share" of the carries while Le'Veon Bell (foot) is sidelined.
ImpactIsaac Redman will likely start, but it's going to be a committee. Dwyer may get series to himself and LaRod Stephens-Howling will get some third-down work. With Bell's outlook getting rosier, there's limited upside with any member of this trio. Dwyer will get a chance to impress Thursday night as Redman continues to nurse a minor stinger.
Dwyer totals 45 total yards in place of Bell | 08/25/2013 12:07 AM
NewsJonathan Dwyer started Saturday's third preseason game against the Chiefs, rushing eight times for 25 yards while adding three catches for 20 yards and a touchdown.
ImpactWith Isaac Redman out with a "stinger," Dwyer got the start in place of Le'Veon Bell (foot). He was the only back to notch a carry through the Steelers' first three drives before Felix Jones got some run near the end of the second quarter. Dwyer wasn't as unimpressive as his 3.13 YPC would suggest, but only really earned yardage that wasn't his on one carry. He was more effective as a check-down target for Ben Roethlisberger, who improvised amidst a collapsing pocket before finding a leaked out Dwyer for a 13-yard score in the first quarter. With Redman ailing, Dwyer should be locked in as the Steelers' Week 1 starter, but will be chairing a committee. There's not much to like unless you snagged Bell in an early draft.
Dwyer reported to spring out of shape | 08/22/2013 12:12 PM
NewsIsaac Redman moved ahead of Jonathan Dwyer on the Steelers depth chart because Dwyer reported to spring practice at an estimated 260 pounds.
Jonathan Dwyer seals up roster spot? | 08/20/2013 12:19 PM
NewsESPN's Scott Brown believes Jonathan Dwyer has sealed up a roster spot.
ImpactDwyer did lose a "careless" fumble on Monday night, but he rumbled for 68 yards on 14 carries. His roster spot was further solidified by the mid-foot injury starter Le'Veon Bell sustained. Dwyer would be in the mix for carries along with primary backup Isaac Redman and scatback La'Rod Stephens-Howling if Bell misses time.
Dwyer rushes for six carries, 15 yards | 08/10/2013 10:32 PM
NewsJonathan Dwyer had six carries for 15 yards in the Steelers' preseason opener on Saturday night.
ImpactDwyer worked exclusively with the second-team and played behind both Isaac Redman and La'Rod Stephens-Howling. He added two catches and was targeted five times in the passing game. The Steelers kept their starting offensive line in for the majority of the first-half, so it's a concerning performance. Due a $1.32 million salary, Dwyer is squarely on the roster bubble.
Jonathan Dwyer says he's lost 25-30 pounds | 07/30/2013 8:07 AM
NewsSteelers RB Jonathan Dwyer says he's lost 25-30 pounds since last season.
ImpactDwyer was listed at 5'11/229 last year, but appeared to be lugging around much more weight than that. He averaged just 3.99 YPC while leading the Steelers with 156 carries. The team reportedly placed him on the trade block after drafting Le'Veon Bell, but predictably found no takers. Dwyer may be battling Isaac Redman for one roster spot at training camp.
Jonathan Dwyer may not make Steelers roster | 07/21/2013 10:32 AM
NewsThe Pittsburgh Post-Gazette considers fourth-year RB Jonathan Dwyer "no lock to make the roster."
ImpactBeat writer Ed Bouchette says Isaac Redman is Le'Veon Bell's "main competition" to be Pittsburgh's starter. In addition to slow feet and lack of versatility, working against Dwyer is his $1.323 million salary. That's a lot for an annually cap-strapped team like the Steelers to pay a backup running back.
Dwyer rates highly in pass block efficiency | 06/15/2013 7:44 PM
NewsJonathan Dwyer led all running backs in pass blocking efficiency in 2012.
ImpactDwyer struggled in a committee with Isaac Redman as a part-time starter last season, but his blocking ability will likely play a key factor in his role with the Steelers. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette believes both Dwyer and La'Rod Stephens-Howling are on the roster bubble.
Kirby confirms the starting job is wide open | 06/12/2013 11:46 AM
NewsSteelers running backs coach Kirby Wilson confirmed that there's no official pecking order yet.
ImpactJonathan Dwyer will be on top of the depth chart heading into training camp, but that has nothing to do with his play. "We just start them where we ended," Wilson said, referring to last season. Rookie Le'Veon Bell shouldn't have a problem beating out Dwyer and Isaac Redman in August.
Jonathan Dwyer getting 1st-team reps for now | 05/23/2013 9:49 AM
NewsJonathan Dwyer is getting the first-team reps at OTAs this week.
Report: Steelers put RB Dwyer on trade block | 04/27/2013 11:29 AM
NewsNFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah has "heard" the Steelers are trying to trade Jonathan Dwyer.
Daniel Jeremiah on Twitter
ImpactIt's not surprising after Friday's second-round selection of Le'Veon Bell. Dwyer is in a contract season and doesn't have a future in Pittsburgh. While he has some appeal as a power back with a passable 4.28 career YPC average, Dwyer's lack of passing-game and special teams value will sink his trade-market worth. The Steelers would probably take a sixth- or seventh-round pick in exchange.
Steelers don't want to rely on Dwyer | 04/24/2013 10:25 AM
NewsThe Steelers have decided that Jonathan Dwyer and Isaac Redman are complementary backs.
ImpactIt's an easy self-evaluation for the Steelers' coaches. Given ample opportunities last year, Dwyer could only muster 3.99 YPC and two touchdowns while Redman was at 3.72 YPC. The Steelers are expected to select a running back in the second or third round of the draft, and could pair that rookie with a veteran free agent such as Ahmad Bradshaw or Beanie Wells. Dwyer will be a role player at best this season.
Dwyer signs RFA tender; will earn $1.323M | 03/11/2013 11:19 PM
NewsSteelers re-signed restricted free agent RB Jonathan Dwyer to a one-year, $1.323 million contract.
Adam Schefter on Twitter
ImpactDwyer wasted no time inking the deal and "wanted to prove a point," according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. In his second season out of Georgia Tech, Dwyer rushed for 623 yards and two touchdowns on 156 carries. He had back-to-back 100-yard efforts in the middle of the season, but his play was inconsistent down the stretch. However, Dwyer enters the offseason as Pittsburgh's top back. Look for the Steelers to try and add some competition.
Steelers place tenders on Dwyer, Redman | 03/09/2013 3:59 PM
NewsSteelers extended original-pick tenders to restricted free agent RBs Jonathan Dwyer and Isaac Redman.
ImpactThe Steelers will enter the heart of the offseason with Dwyer under control as their top back, and Redman as the projected third-down specialist. They could always rescind these tenders if Dwyer and Redman opt not to sign, and Pittsburgh uses a high draft pick on a running back like Eddie Lacy. Dwyer disappointed in 2012 after a hot start. Redman defines plodder, lacking big-play run skills.
Steelers may not tender Jonathan Dwyer | 02/17/2013 2:43 PM
NewsThe Pittsburgh Post-Gazette suggests that the Steelers may not tender restricted free agent Jonathan Dwyer.
ImpactIf Dwyer failed to receive a tender, he'd become an unrestricted free agent. The Steelers view neither Dwyer nor fellow RFA Isaac Redman as viable starters, so the thinking here is that they wouldn't want to commit $2.7 million to two backup running backs. Redman is expected to be tendered and return as a third-down back. Dwyer, 23, may be allowed to move on.
Steelers don't see Redman, Dwyer as starters | 01/20/2013 1:27 PM
NewsThe Steelers don't view Jonathan Dwyer or Isaac Redman as starting options for 2013.
ImpactNot surprisingly. Both Dwyer and Redman are restricted free agents this offseason, and both could find their way back to Pittsburgh. However, their inability to make defenders miss and lack of consistency leaves GM Kevin Colbert on the search for a top back through the draft or free agency.
