Drafted:Drafted by Pittsburgh in 2004 (1/11).
|Assets:||Highly instinctive and creative: can make things happen when the play breaks down, runs well when needed, and is hard to bring down. Calm under pressure. Has a great arm and can make all the throws, including an accurate deep ball.|
|Flaws:||Takes far too long in the pocket and gets sacked too much (leading to durability issues). Still throws too many picks. Lacks great timing to hit open receivers in stride early in the play. Has had an increasing amount of worrisome off-field trouble.|

Steelers OC Haley promises more no-huddle | 06/18/2014 10:10 PM
NewsSteelers OC Todd Haley confirmed the no-huddle will be a staple of Pittsburgh's 2014 offense.
ImpactThe Steelers played no-huddle sparingly early in 2013. They implemented it down the stretch, and Ben Roethlisberger was fantasy football's No. 4 quarterback over Pittsburgh's final nine games. "We've been working hard at it," Haley said. "That's going to be part of what we do. We don't want to just give it lip service." Playing faster would benefit all Steelers skill players.
Steelers to use more no-huddle in 2014 | 06/08/2014 10:26 AM
NewsBen Roethlisberger said the Steelers will use the no-huddle offense more in 2014.
ImpactOC Todd Haley was a bit leery to use the hurry-up offense the first half of last season but became more receptive to it down the stretch, and the offense took off. The Steelers went 6-3 over their final nine games and averaged ten points more per game than over the previous seven. "I don't want to call it our base offense," Roethlisberger said, "but I think you'll see more of it." It allows Big Ben to call the plays at the line and run more of them. Roethlisberger was playing some of the best football of his career in 2013 and has some sneaky 2014 upside.
Big Ben planning to play 5-7 more seasons | 05/06/2014 6:58 PM
NewsSpeaking in a Tuesday radio interview, Ben Roethlisberger said he's planning to play 5-7 more seasons.
Impact"I feel like I'm in great shape," Roethlisberger said. Now 32, Big Ben has taken an enormous beating during his 10-year career, but played every snap last season. We wouldn't count on that kind of durability going forward, but Roethlisberger's arm talent hasn't diminished in any fashion. He's signed through 2015 in Pittsburgh.
Nothing imminent between Big Ben, Steelers | 04/23/2014 9:52 AM
NewsThere's "nothing imminent" on extension negotiations between the Steelers and Ben Roethlisberger.
ImpactAlthough Roethlisberger carries an $18.9 million cap hit this season, the Steelers aren't in desperate straights. They've already done their free-agent shopping and will get another $8 million in relief once their "post June 1" cuts go through. Both sides say they remain committed to having Big Ben, 32, retire as a Steeler.
Steelers not close to extension with Big Ben | 03/15/2014 7:35 PM
NewsESPN.com's Scott Brown reports "there doesn't appear to be any sense of urgency" from the Steelers to get an extension done with Ben Roethlisberger.
ImpactRoethlisberger has two years remaining on the eight-year, $102 million deal he signed in 2008 and is set to count $18.9 million against the cap this season. It's surprising that the Steelers haven't already got an extension done consisting their cap issues, but a deal between the sides is expected to happen at some point. GM Kevin Colbert said it's "unanimous" within the organization that Roethlisberger's next contract will allow him to retire in Pittsburgh.
GM wants Big Ben to retire as a Steeler | 02/20/2014 9:00 AM
NewsGM Kevin Colbert said it's "unanimous" within the organization that the Steelers want Ben Roethlisberger to retire as a Steeler.
Impact"There's nobody that I'd rather have or the franchise would rather have than Ben," Colbert said. "He's won for us, there's still a lot of tread of the tires." The comments are similar to the ones made by team president Art Rooney II last month. The 31-year-old Big Ben currently has two years remaining on the eight-year, $102 million deal he signed in 2008 -- meaning an extension could be hammered out this offseason. Over the final eight games of last season, Roethlisberger threw 16 touchdowns against five interceptions while leading the Steelers to a 6-2 record.
Rooney wants Big Ben to retire as a Steeler | 01/09/2014 10:10 AM
NewsTeam president Art Rooney II said there's "no doubt" that "we've got to have Ben [Roethlisberger] retire as a Steeler."
ImpactRoethlisberger, who will turn 32 in March, has two years left on the eight-year, $102 million deal he signed in 2008. Rooney said an extension will happen at some point, adding that he hopes to have Big Ben for another five years. It's an understandable stance after the quarterback overcame the loss of Mike Wallace and C Maurkice Pouncey (knee) to set a franchise record for completions (375) while going over 4,000 yards for the third time in his career and playing in all 16 games for the second time.
Big Ben totals 179 yards, one score vs. CLE | 12/29/2013 4:05 PM
NewsBen Roethlisberger completed 19-of-31 passes for 179 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions in Pittsburgh's 20-7, Week 17 win over the Browns.
ImpactTo earn a playoff berth, the Steelers now need the Chase Daniel-led Chiefs to defeat the Chargers. In other words, Big Ben and company are likely headed home. Roethlisberger had a very mixed day against the Browns - both of his picks were terrible throws, while he missed Antonio Brown on at least three passes - but finishes 2013 with the second most yards of his career (4,261). Roethlisberger appeared in all 16 games for the first time since 2008, while his 28 scores go down as his most since 2007. Going on 32, Ben is not on the upswing in Dynasty leagues, but his arrow isn't pointed as steeply downward as it was heading into 2013.
Big Ben tosses 2 TDs in Week 16 victory | 12/22/2013 8:12 PM
NewsBen Roethlisberger completed 16-of-28 passes for 167 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception in Pittsburgh's Week 16 win over Green Bay.
Ben Roethlisberger excels, Steelers lose | 12/08/2013 6:46 PM
NewsBen Roethlisberger completed 23-of-39 passes for 349 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in Sunday's Week 14 loss to the Dolphins.
ImpactRoethlisberger was spectacular again, fitting passes into ridiculously tight windows for huge chunk plays all day long. It was more impressive considering the snowy and slippery conditions. Over the last four weeks, Big Ben is averaging 297.5 passing yards with 11 touchdowns and no interceptions. The red-hot passer will be a borderline QB1 against the Bengals in Week 15.
Big Ben tosses 2 TDs in Thanksgiving loss | 11/28/2013 11:57 PM
NewsBen Roethlisberger completed 28-of-44 passes for 257 yards and two touchdowns in Thursday night's Week 13 loss to the Ravens.
ImpactRoethlisberger received solid protection all night long -- he wasn't sacked at all -- and had all day to throw. He didn't really turn it on until the second half, though. Big Ben was averaging about 4.5 YPA for much of the game before the fourth quarter. His eight-yard touchdown strike to Emmanuel Sanders in the third quarter was a thing of beauty. Big Ben avoided some pressure, climbed the pocket, and then found Sanders streaking wide open across the middle of the end zone. Roethlisberger's second score went to Jerricho Cotchery from one yard away with under two minutes to play. Big Ben has found a bit of a groove in recent weeks and will be a middle-of-the-pack QB2 option next week against Miami.
Big Ben leads Steelers to third straight win | 11/24/2013 4:31 PM
NewsBen Roethlisberger completed 22-of-34 passes for 217 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's Week 12 win over the Browns.
Big Ben willing to restructure his deal | 11/21/2013 10:31 AM
NewsBen Roethlisberger suggested he'd be willing to renegotiate his contract in order to stay with the Steelers.
Roethlisberger throws for four scores in win | 11/17/2013 4:43 PM
NewsBen Roethlisberger completed 29-of-45 passes for 367 yards and four touchdowns in Pittsburgh's 37-27 Week 11 win over the Lions.
ImpactHe added six rushes for 12 yards. Roethlisberger had an up-and-down game, sizzling in the first quarter, struggling in the second and doing a little bit of both after the break. He benefitted mightily from yards after the catch. It all added up to his second four-score game in three weeks, and third multi-TD effort of the season. That's not a typo: Roethlisberger has only three multi-score afternoons in 10 games. Roethlisberger can still sling it when he needs to, but is an inconsistent fantasy option in an offense that wants to be run-first. He'll be a mid-range QB2 in Week 12 against the Browns.
Report: Big Ben's teammates want improvement | 11/14/2013 6:52 PM
NewsAccording to NFL.com's Mike Silver, some of Ben Roethlisberger's teammates believe he needs to "upgrade his preparation (and) film study away from the facility," and become "more cerebral."
Ian Rapoport on Twitter
Impact"More cerebral" isn't something people become overnight, but this isn't the first time we've heard Roethlisberger's work ethic questioned. He's always been more of a spitballer/gunslinger than technician. Going on 32, Big Ben is an old dog unlikely to learn new tricks, but he's going to soon have to if he wants to remain an effective quarterback. He can't keep taking hits the way he has to this point in his career.
Roethlisberger on trade-demand report: 'B.S.' | 11/10/2013 6:10 PM
NewsFollowing Sunday's loss to Buffalo, Ben Roethlisberger adamantly disputed a report he wants the Steelers to trade him this offseason.
ImpactRoethlisberger called the report "completely unacceptable" and "one of the most B.S. stories I've ever heard." Big Ben said he'd never even considered it. Roethlisberger turns 32 in March and is owed an affordable $2.6 million base salary in 2014, with a $9 million bonus that is already guaranteed. We suspect he isn't going anywhere, although the Cardinals may inquire. Old Steelers offensive coordinator Bruce Arians is Arizona's head coach.
Roethlisberger throws for 204 yards, TD | 11/10/2013 4:13 PM
NewsBen Roethlisberger completed 18-of-30 passes for 204 yards, a touchdown, and an interception in the Steelers' Week 10 win over the Bills.
ImpactHe took four sacks. The Steelers jumped out to a 14-3 first-half lead and were able to play the way they want to play against the Bills en route to a 23-10 victory. It's why last week's box score in a shootout against New England was deceptive. Pittsburgh game plans to be a run-first team that features Antonio Brown in the passing game. Roethlisberger will be a high-end QB2 in Week 11 against the Lions, but offers limited upside due to the Steelers' offensive philosophy.
Report: Steelers to listen on Roethlisberger | 11/10/2013 10:20 AM
NewsAppearing on GameDay Morning, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Ben Roethlisberger is not happy in Pittsburgh and the Steelers will listen to trade offers in the spring.
ImpactAccording to Rap Sheet, Roethlisberger's issues aren't just Todd Haley-related. The Steelers fielded trade offers for Big Ben last offseason, but they would surely have to be blown away to deal him. It's already hard enough to find franchise quarterbacks. Roethlisberger just wants to win. In the unlikely event Roethlisberger is dealt, NFL Network mentioned the Cardinals and Big Ben's former offensive boss Bruce Arians as a potential landing spot.
Ben Roethlisberger goes over 400 yards again | 11/03/2013 8:31 PM
NewsBen Roethlisberger completed 28-of-48 passes for 400 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions in Sunday's Week 9 loss at New England.
Roethlisberger picked twice as Steelers fall | 10/27/2013 7:42 PM
NewsBen Roethlisberger completed 29-of-45 passes for 275 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions in the Steelers' Week 8 loss to the Raiders.
ImpactHe took five sacks against an Oakland defense that won one-on-one battles all game long. Roethlisberger's decision making was generally poor, and he was nearly picked off on several more occasions. The Steelers are no longer a passing team, but had to play that way after the Raiders grabbed an early 21-3 lead. Big Ben will be a mid-range QB2 when Pittsburgh faces New England in Week 9.
Ben Roethlisberger manages PIT to win | 10/20/2013 7:23 PM
NewsBen Roethlisberger completed 17-of-23 passes for 160 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions in Sunday's Week 7 win over the Ravens.
ImpactRoethlisberger should have had two touchdowns, but receiver Derek Moye dropped a perfectly thrown go-route in the back corner of the end zone. Owners shouldn't be overly frustrated by the disappointing numbers. The Steelers completely took the air out of the ball, controlling the clock with Le'Veon Bell. Big Ben still got whatever he wanted in the passing game. Expect far better numbers in a tasty matchup at Oakland in Week 8.
Big Ben (finger) practices in full Wednesday | 10/09/2013 4:11 PM
NewsBen Roethlisberger (finger) was a full participant in Wednesday's practice.

ImpactRoethlisberger partially dislocated his right index finger in Week 4, but it was never a major concern. He'll be a QB2 option for Sunday's game against the Jets.
Roethlisberger partially dislocated finger | 10/01/2013 12:52 PM
NewsBen Roethlisberger said he partially dislocated his right forefinger in Sunday's loss to the Vikings.
Ed Bouchette on Twitter
ImpactRoethlisberger played through the minor injury in Week 4 and is in no danger of missing time when the Steelers come out of their bye in Week 6. In fact, he said he could have practiced Tuesday if needed. Roethlisberger ranks fifth in the NFL in passing yards with 1,231 already.
Roethlisberger confirms injury not serious | 09/30/2013 1:20 PM
NewsBen Roethlisberger confirmed the index finger he suffered in Week 4 against the Vikings is not serious.
ImpactThe finger injury was to Ben's throwing hand, though he remained in the game after having it taped up. Big Ben finished 36-of-51 passing for 383 yards, one touchdown, and a pick. Although Roethlisberger has put up huge yardage totals in back-to-back weeks, the Steelers' offense has remained largely dysfunctional due to poor line play. They'll try to fix it during a Week 5 bye.
Big Ben passes for 383 yards in Week 4 loss | 09/29/2013 4:29 PM
NewsBen Roethlisberger completed 36-of-51 passes for 383 yards, one touchdown, and an interception in Sunday's Week 4 loss to the Vikings.
ImpactRoethlisberger nearly led the Steelers on a game-tying two-minute drive at the end of the fourth quarter, but wasn't able to finish and fumbled on the six-yard line. The Steelers offensive line struggled to pass protect, and he was sacked five times. Roethlisberger was forced to make the majority of his throws outside the pocket, and completed at least one pass to eight different receivers. He's currently on pace for 4,924 yards, 20 touchdowns and 20 interceptions through four weeks.
Roethlisberger throws for 406 yards, two TDs | 09/22/2013 11:57 PM
NewsBen Roethlisberger completed 26-of-41 passes for 406 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions in Sunday night's Week 3 loss to the Bears.
ImpactRoethlisberger was sacked three times and had four turnovers, including a pick-six to Major Wright in the second quarter. He continues to play without a running game and struggled to get pass protection behind a patchwork offensive line. Both of his touchdown passes went to Antonio Brown and he managed to complete at least one pass to nine different receivers. Roethlisberger will remain a QB2 option in Week 4 against the Vikings.
Big Ben struggles again in MNF loss to Cincy | 09/17/2013 12:01 AM
NewsBen Roethlisberger completed 20-of-37 passes for 251 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in Monday night's Week 2, 20-10 loss to the Bengals.
Roethlisberger held to 191 yards in ugly loss | 09/08/2013 4:00 PM
NewsBen Roethlisberger completed 21-of-33 passes for 191 yards with one touchdown and one interception in Sunday's 16-9 Week 1 loss to the Titans.
Big Ben torches KC in third preseason game | 08/24/2013 9:59 PM
NewsBen Roethlisberger looked ready for the regular season in Saturday's third preseason game against the Chiefs, completing 13-of-19 passes for 166 yards and a touchdown.
ImpactBig Ben worked his connection with Antonio Brown early before then spreading out to Emmanuel Sanders and Jonathan Dwyer. Dwyer appeared to be Ben's primary checkdown target with Heath Miller (ACL) still rehabbing. He had a 34-yard touchdown negated after the NFL's baffling catch rules robbed Sanders of a score. Along the way were a number of Roethlisberger's trademark improvisations. He finishes the preseason 22-of-33 for 268 yards (8.12 yards per attempt), one touchdown and one pick. Playing behind a rag-tag line, an aging Roethlisberger isn't a great bet to appear in all 16 games, but is an ideal QB2/plug-and-play QB1.
Big Ben pressured a ton on Monday night | 08/19/2013 9:15 PM
NewsBen Roethlisberger completed 5-of-6 passes for 66 yards and an interception in Monday night's preseason game against the Redskins.
ImpactBig Ben was sacked twice and faced intense pressure all night. His interception resulted in a pick-six for Redskins OLB Ryan Kerrigan on a swing pass. Roethlisberger did have a nice strike to Antonio Brown for a 20-yard gain on a play where he was flushed out of the pocket to his left. The Steelers' ability to protect him is a concern, but it's been one for years. Through two preseason games, Roethlisberger is 9-of-14 for 102 yards and the interception.
Big Ben has solid preseason opener | 08/10/2013 8:22 PM
NewsBen Roethlisberger completed 4-of-8 throws for 36 yards in Pittsburgh's preseason opener Saturday night.
ImpactRoethlisberger was composed and in command of a largely dink-and-dunk passing attack as the Steelers leaned heavily on La'Rod Stephens-Howling and the run game. Big Ben's stats would've looked better had Antonio Brown got both feet in bounds on a bullet would-be touchdown down the right sideline in Corey Webster's coverage. Roethlisberger is a recommended fantasy QB2 this year.
Ben Roethlisberger feeling knee just a little | 07/26/2013 5:31 PM
NewsCoach Mike Tomlin said Ben Roethlisberger is feeling "a little discomfort" in his surgically repaired knee.
Ed Bouchette on Twitter
ImpactRoethlisberger underwent a scope on June 5th. The fact that Steelers are already letting him get out and work so early in camp shows there's nothing to be concerned about here. Roethlisberger's rehab has been smooth.

Steelers likely to extend Ben's deal in 2014 | 07/01/2013 3:25 PM
NewsThe Steelers are expected to approach Ben Roethlisberger about a contract extension next offseason.
ImpactThey could start preliminary talks before that. Roethlisberger's cap number balloons to $18 million in 2014, and the annually cap-strapped Steelers could seek to reduce that sum via a Tony Romo-like extension. Big Ben turned 31 in March. A long-term deal would ensure he finishes his career in Pittsburgh.
Roethlisberger (knee) resumes throwing | 06/14/2013 10:02 AM
NewsBen Roethlisberger (knee) has resumed a throwing program.
ImpactRoethlisberger has been throwing to receivers on the practice field and said that he "could play Sunday" if it were the regular season. He continues to progress ahead of schedule after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery last week. Roethlisberger remains on track to be 100 percent for training camp.
Roethlisberger: I could play this Sunday | 06/11/2013 2:39 PM
NewsBen Roethlisberger (knee surgery) says he could "play Sunday if I had to."
ImpactBen has already shed his crutches, and reiterated that he'll be full-go for camp. "It feels great," Roethlisberger said. "I saw (the doctor) this morning. He was pleasantly surprised with the range of motion and where we're at with the swelling." For a player with Roethlisberger's injury history, no ailment should be written off, but his knee won't be a concern come Week 1.
Roethlisberger got right meniscus repaired | 06/05/2013 1:22 PM
NewsUpdating an earlier item, Ben Roethlisberger's "minor" knee operation was to repair damage to his right meniscus.
Adam Schefter on Twitter
ImpactIt's the exact same operation he underwent seven years ago. The recovery time varies from 4-6 weeks, putting Roethlisberger squarely on track for training camp. Despite Big Ben's increasingly lengthy injury history, it's not a concern for his 2013 status.

Ben Roethlisberger feeling 100 percent | 05/28/2013 8:08 AM
NewsBen Roethlisberger reiterated that he's feeling 100 percent healthy.
ImpactRoethlisberger sustained a complicated shoulder/rib injury in Week 10 last season. He returned for Week 14, but completed just 56.4 percent of his passes with a 9:4 TD-to-INT ratio over the final four weeks. "The biggest factor is that there have been no setbacks," Roethlisberger said. "I don't feel it when I throw. Obviously, any time you get hit you can hurt yourself. But I think everything is good to go." Even with Mike Wallace gone and Heath Miller coming off an ACL tear, Big Ben will be one of the premier QB2s this season.
Big Ben: Offensive will be different in 2013 | 05/22/2013 6:31 PM
NewsSpeaking Tuesday, Ben Roethlisberger said the Steelers have revamped their playbook, but refused to provide specifics.
Impact"There's been some changes this offseason in some of the offensive philosophies, playbook and some things that I think are good," Roethlisberger said. "It's some compromise from all the different position coaches, the running back coaches, the line, and quarterback coaches. I think we've taken a little bit of everything and made it a lot better." The Steelers fell from 12th to 21st in total offense last season, and lost lid-lifting WR Mike Wallace in free agency. With the loss of Wallace and addition of potential bell-cow back Le'Veon Bell, the Steelers could be adopting a more methodical philosophy.
Roethlisberger explains Mike Wallace's value | 04/19/2013 3:17 PM
NewsBen Roethlisberger anticipates Mike Wallace's departure having a noticeable and negative effect on the Steelers' offense.
Sports Radio Interviews
ImpactWallace is often criticized as a one-trick-pony deep threat, but the fact that he tilted coverage and commanded double teams made Wallace a valuable piece in Pittsburgh's offense. "On the field, he was something special," Big Ben explained. "People don't realize how important it is to have a guy with his ability on the football field. ... Safeties have to respect Mike's speed. Cornerbacks and the defense are scheming to stop Mike Wallace going deep. It opens up other receivers, so to lose a guy like that is really going to be tough for all of us."

Ben says there weren't locker-room issues | 03/01/2013 9:18 AM
NewsBen Roethlisberger insists there weren't issues in the Steelers' locker room last season.
Impact"For anybody to say there are locker room issues or leadership issues are completely off base," Roethlisberger said. "I believe that's the frustration of last year, I honestly do. ... There are no issues with LaMarr (Woodley). There are no issues on our team." Roethlisberger is just trying to be a leader in shooting down some fairly public issues, but that's more than he would have sometimes done in the past. Age will be a bigger concern than chemistry for the Steelers in 2013.
Steelers, Big Ben agree to restructured deal | 02/28/2013 12:12 PM
NewsThe Steelers have completed a restructuring of Ben Roethlisberger's contract, clearing $3 million in cap space.
Ed Bouchette on Twitter
ImpactDetails aren't available yet, but two sides were working to reduce Roethlisberger's $19.595 million cap number without extending the length of his deal. Expect some of his base salary to be converted into a bonus, which can be prorated over the next three years. The eight-year, $102 million deal Big Ben signed in March of 2008 exires after the 2015 season.
Report: Steelers renegotiating Ben's deal | 02/26/2013 3:56 PM
NewsNFL.com reports the Steelers are renegotiating Ben Roethlisberger's contract, and could reach an agreement "by the end of the week."
ImpactPer reporter Albert Breer, the restructuring won't take place in the form of an extension. Roethlisberger's current cap number is a prohibitive $19.595 million, $11.6 million of which comes in the form of his base salary. A good chunk of that should be converted to a bonus, which can be prorated over the final three years of his deal. Ben is signed through 2015. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports the Steelers are also restructuring ILB Lawrence Timmons' deal.
