|Assets:||A prototypical power back and interior runner with size, power, toughness and good instincts. Will patiently wait for blocks and will get the extra yardage after initial contact. Has a good vision of the field and fights hard on every down. Also a good blocker and solid pass-catcher.|
|Flaws:||Durability is a big concern. Injury-prone. Can be very inconsistent at times. Not an explosive runner by any means nor does he possess game-breaking ability. Needs to prove he can carry the heavy load.|

Leshoure expects to be more involved in 2014 | 06/07/2014 12:56 PM
NewsLions RB Mikel Leshoure expects to be more involved in the Lions' offense this season.
ImpactThat is not a high hurdle to jump considering Leshoure only saw two carries last season, but it is notable because new Lions OC Joe Lombardi comes from a Saints team that routinely utilized three running backs. If he can beat out second-year back Theo Riddick, Leshoure could see 75 to 100 carries in a Chris Ivory-like role. Even with an increased role, Leshoure would need an injury to Joique Bell or Reggie Bush to have fantasy value.
Mikel Leshoure seeing increased reps | 05/25/2014 11:56 AM
NewsLions RB Mikel Leshoure has seen more offseason reps with Joique Bell battling a lingering knee injury.
ImpactBell missed the offseason conditioning program and early OTAs, allowing Leshoure to fully familiarize himself with new OC Joe Lombardi's offense. Lombardi hails from New Orleans, where Sean Payton found a way to incorporate three and sometimes four backs. Leshoure may fill a Mark Ingram or Chris Ivory-like role.
Mikel Leshoure skipping with 'personal issue' | 04/25/2014 9:04 AM
NewsMikel Leshoure skipped voluntary workouts this week due to a "personal issue."
Impact"He did have a personal issue, let's put it that way," coach Jim Caldwell said. "We knew he was gone and what was happening. We were well aware of it." Leshoure is no higher than the No. 3 running back on the depth chart and has openly said that he'd like to play for a team that will give him more carries. He has one year left on his rookie deal and may be in for another long season.
Mikel Leshoure skipping voluntary workouts | 04/23/2014 4:06 PM
NewsMikel Leshoure is skipping voluntary workouts this week.
ImpactLeshoure is one of four players not in attendance, including Ndamukong Suh, CB Chris Houston (toe), and WR Carlin Isles (rugby). Leshoure likely wants out of Detroit, as he's no higher than the No. 3 running back and might even be No. 4. GM Martin Mayhew has already stated he doesn't want to deal Leshoure.
Lions: 'Zero interest' in trading Leshoure | 03/24/2014 1:41 PM
NewsLions GM Martin Mayhew has "zero interest" in trading Mikel Leshoure.
Dave Birkett on Twitter
ImpactMayhew says he's had "no trade talks of any kind," and expects Leshoure to be a Lion in 2014. The Lions are supposedly committing to the running game, but at best, Leshoure will be a distant third on the depth chart behind Reggie Bush and Joique Bell. Leshoure shouldn't take his spot on the 53-man roster for granted.
Leshoure could have expanded role in 2014 | 02/21/2014 5:16 PM
NewsLions GM Martin Mayhew said at the Combine Friday that Mikel Leshoure will have a clean slate coming into 2014.
ImpactA 2011 second-round pick, Leshoure was active for three games last season, playing behind Theo Riddick as the No. 4 back. The Lions are moving to a new offensive scheme under coach Jim Caldwell and are expected to put more of an emphasis on the running game, which could lead to roles for more than just Reggie Bush and Joique Bell. "If you go back and look at what the Saints did, they used multiple backs in a lot of different ways," Mayhew said. "I'm encouraged about that for Mikel. It could bode well for him in terms of getting more playing time."
Mikel Leshoure just wants to eat | 12/27/2013 9:23 AM
NewsMikel Leshoure said he wants to be "somewhere they're going to feed me the rock and I can go eat, man."
Detroit Free Press
ImpactLeshoure has found himself on the weekly inactive list for much of the 2013 season and doesn't fit OC Scott Linehan's offensive style. Leshoure strongly suggested that he doesn't want to return to Detroit if the current coaching staff is back in 2014. We don't see Jim Schwartz and company surviving, but who knows. Leshoure, the 57th pick in 2011, has one year remaining on his rookie deal.
Lions remain high on Mikel Leshoure | 12/14/2013 10:50 AM
NewsLions OC Scott Linehan says he believes Mikel Leshoure has a very bright future.
ImpactLeshoure has been banished to the bench this season, a year after leading the Lions in rushing. "He has a very bright future," Linehan said. "He just needs the opportunities." Those opportunities likely aren't going to come in Detroit unless there's an injury. Leshoure has been active for three games this season, registering two offensive snaps. He's just 23 years old.
Mikel Leshoure: 'I just want to play' | 09/25/2013 3:18 PM
NewsMikel Leshoure said he feels "like I'm better than a reserve player and I have more to give."
Detroit Free Press
Impact"I just want to play," Leshoure said. "I want to play. Like I said before, there's a lot of speculation just because of the fact that I'm not on the field and people just wondering what's going on. But I want to play, and that's it." With Reggie Bush (knee) inactive last week, Leshoure was a game day active but played zero snaps behind Joique Bell and Theo Riddick. Leshoure is reportedly "wide open" to being traded, but the Lions "quickly rebuffed" trade offers from the Colts last week and from other interested teams in training camp.
Mikel Leshoure doesn't play a snap | 09/23/2013 10:17 AM
NewsMikel Leshoure did not play a single snap in Sunday's Week 3 win over the Redskins.
Detroit Free Press
ImpactEven with Reggie Bush (knee) sidelined, Leshoure can't get on the field. Sixth-round rookie Theo Riddick served as Joique Bell's backup. With Bush expected back for Week 4, Leshoure should be on the trading block. When the Lions realize no one wants him, he'll hang out on the weekly inactive list.
Lions turned down trade overtures on Leshoure | 09/22/2013 12:35 PM
NewsCBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports the Lions "quickly rebuffed" trade overtures from the Colts last week regarding Mikel Leshoure.
ImpactLeshoure has been a healthy scratch for each of Detroit's first three games. Colts GM Ryan Grigson reportedly also called the Vikings about Toby Gerhart before settling on sending a first-round pick to the Browns for Trent Richardson. It's interesting that the Lions were opposed to dealing Leshoure. Perhaps they'll change their minds when Reggie Bush's knee is back to 100 percent.
Report: Leshoure open to trade from Lions | 09/15/2013 10:54 AM
NewsESPN's Adam Schefter reports Lions RB Mikel Leshoure is "wide open" to being traded.
Adam Schefter on Twitter
ImpactLeshoure is the No. 3 back in Detroit and was a healthy scratch last week as a running back who doesn't play special teams. He also hasn't looked the same since tearing his Achilles' as a rookie. Leshoure ran for 798 yards and nine touchdowns in 2012. Colts owner has expressed some interest in acquiring a running back following Vick Ballard's season-ending ACL tear. They're not comfortable with Donald Brown as the No. 2. That's pure speculation on our part, though.
Lions release Week 1 inactives | 09/08/2013 11:41 AM
NewsLions declared RB Mikel Leshoure, WR Ryan Broyles, QB Kellen Moore, CB Jonte Green, OG Leroy Harris, OT LaAdrian Waddle, and DE Devin Taylor inactive for Sunday's opener against the Vikings.
Mikel Leshoure won't blame Achilles for slide | 08/28/2013 8:20 AM
NewsMikel Leshoure declined to blame his 2011 Achilles' tear for his slide down the depth chart.
Impact"I feel good," Leshoure said. "I feel like I'm back to where I need to be and nothing as far as my Achilles is the issue here. I don't put anything on that." Simply put, Joique Bell is the better player and has won the backup job by outplaying Leshoure. Credit the former second-round pick for not making any excuses. He'll need a Bush injury to even be part of a committee this season.
Mikel Leshoure works as 4th-string RB | 08/22/2013 11:10 PM
NewsMikel Leshoure rushed for 32 yards on five carries in the Lions' third preseason game Thursday night.
ImpactHe played behind Reggie Bush, Joique Bell, and even FB/RB Montell Owens, although Owens suffered a potentially severe knee injury. Leshoure is Detroit's third-string running back at best and may be inactive on game days to open the season because he doesn't contribute on special teams. Through three preseason games, Leshoure has 56 yards on 12 runs (4.67 YPC). Bell is averaging 6.50 YPC.
Leshoure carries the ball only once vs. CLE | 08/16/2013 10:16 AM
NewsMikel Leshoure was given just one carry in Thursday's preseason game.
ImpactThat would suggest an injury, but Leshoure wasn't known to be hurt. It's the latest sign that Leshoure is buried behind Joique Bell on the depth chart, and perhaps even rookie Theo Riddick. Leshoure has zero fantasy upside.
Leshoure still running through mud in camp | 07/31/2013 2:00 PM
NewsAccording to DetroitLions.com, Mikel Leshoure still hasn't rediscovered his pre-injury form.
Tim Twentyman on Twitter
ImpactIn-house reporter Tim Twentyman gave the opinion after being asked for his thoughts on Joique Bell and Leshoure. He added that Bell "is solid." It's certainly an indication that Bell is in the running for the Lions' No. 2 job behind Reggie Bush, as team-payroll "beat writers" aren't paid to make waves. Twentyman is also one of the best reporters covering the Lions. Outside of touchdown-only leagues, Leshoure's upside is extremely minimal.
Lions want more consistency from Leshoure | 06/17/2013 8:32 AM
NewsLions coach Jim Schwartz is looking for more week-to-week consistency from Mikel Leshoure.
Detroit Free Press
Impact"(You) can't be up one week, down another regardless of circumstances and things like that," Schwartz said. "I think that's probably his biggest challenge. It's something he's been working through this offseason and that's something he's going to have to put behind him as a player." Leshoure's reps were "managed" during the offseason program as he fought through a hamstring issue, but he was a full participant in last week's minicamp. Dogged by injuries since being the No. 57 overall pick of the 2011 draft, Leshoure's 2013 will be all about proving he can stay healthy.
Mikel Leshoure takes part in team drills | 06/11/2013 2:23 PM
NewsMikel Leshoure (hamstring) took part in team drills at Tuesday's minicamp session.

ImpactLeshoure doesn't expect to be full-go before for camp, but this is a positive sign for his recovery. Leshoure is doubtful to take part in team drills for all three days of minicamp.
Mikel Leshoure (hamstring) not rushing back | 06/04/2013 2:57 PM
NewsMikel Leshoure (hamstring) expects to be limited until training camp.
Detroit Free Press
ImpactLeshoure returned to limited on practice on Monday, but won't be full-go for OTAs or minicamp. "(It's) offseason OTAs, it's no time to be out here trying to rush and do things," Leshoure said. "I'm not saying I haven't been trying to get back. That's been the plan. But we're just being a little bit smarter this year." On a micro scale, Leshoure's hamstring ailment isn't a concern, but on a macro scale, it's just his latest nagging leg injury. It's a pivotal season for the 2011 second-rounder's Lions future.
Schwartz: Leshoure (hamstring) healing slowly | 05/29/2013 7:31 PM
NewsSpeaking about Mikel Leshoure's hamstring injury Wednesday, Lions coach Jim Schwartz said it's taking "maybe a little bit longer than we would've thought."
ImpactLeshoure has thus far been sidelined at OTAs. "It's something that's been nagging him," Schwartz said. "We'll get him back there soon. He's working hard, he's just not working on the field." Leshoure missed time in last year's camp with a hamstring injury, and experienced calf, groin and ankle issues during the regular season. Leshoure could tumble farther down the depth chart if he can't shake his habit of leg injuries.

ImpactLeshoure has been doing individual work since OTAs opened, and there are no indications that the injury is serious, but it's troubling news for a player who's had trouble staying healthy since being drafted.
Injury holding Mikel Leshoure out of OTAs | 05/22/2013 3:10 PM
NewsMikel Leshoure is being held out of team drills at Lions OTAs with an undisclosed injury.
Impact"He's battling some stuff," coach Jim Schwartz said. "He can do some individual stuff but he's not ready to do any team work." There are no indications that the injury is serious, but it's worrisome news for a player who's had trouble staying healthy since being the No. 57 overall pick of the 2011 draft. Leshoure can ill-afford any more leg ailments after plodding through 2012. For now, Leshoure remains penciled in as the Lions' short-yardage "specialist" despite his anemic 3.71 yards per carry last season.
Mikel Leshoure didn't face many 8-man fronts | 05/09/2013 11:12 AM
NewsMikel Leshoure faced eight defenders in the box less often than any other running back last season.
ImpactLeshoure saw a stacked box just 6.05 percent of the time, yet still averaged a paltry 3.71 YPC. It's a scary number that reaffirms Leshoure's best role is as a short-yardage pounder. That's what he'll be this season as Reggie Bush was signed to jump-start the Lions' running game as the feature back.
Lions expect a 'big jump' for Leshoure in '13 | 02/21/2013 3:40 PM
NewsCoach Jim Schwartz said he expects Mikel Leshoure to "make a big jump" in 2013.
Impact"He flashed enough highs that gives us optimism that he can (be explosive), but he also had enough inconsistency to say that he's not there yet," said Schwartz. "We still have high hopes for him." Leshoure's 2012 season was essentially his rookie year after missing all of 2011 with a torn Achilles'. The team had just three runs of 20-plus yards last season, and Leshoure didn't have any of them.
New Lions RBs coach hoping to shake up attack | 02/12/2013 11:52 PM
NewsThe Lions haven't had a 1,000-yard rusher since 2004.
ImpactThat season, Kevin Jones gained 1,133 yards on the ground for a 6-10 team. New RBs coach Curtis Modkins, who oversaw the Bills' potent running game the past three seasons, believes he can get Detroit's run game out of the dumps. "I think (OC Scott Linehan) wants people to have to defend everything," Modkins said. "Whether we run it or pass it, I want a defense to have to defend the possibility of both and be afraid of both." The Lions have a pair of serviceable backs in Mikel Leshoure and Joique Bell, but should make finding more of a home-run hitter in either the draft or free agency a priority.
