|Assets:||Can provide a lot to an offense, in several roles: a good lead blocker who can also hold his own as a tailback and a receiver. Uses his big frame to his advantage. Can move the pile and get tough yards as a rusher. Fights hard as a blocker. Very dependable as a receiver.|
|Flaws:||Lacks ideal speed to be a regular running back and isn't really big enough to match up well one-on-one as a tight end. Really needs to find his niche and concentrate at one position.|

Clay lands on list of matchup nightmares | 07/16/2014 9:51 AM
NewsNFL sources told ESPN's Field Yates that Charles Clay is among the biggest offensive nightmare matchups.
ImpactThere's a bit of hyperbole going on here as Clay is joined on Yates' list by the likes of Calvin Johnson, Jimmy Graham, Adrian Peterson, Rob Gronkowski etc. But it speaks to the underrated value Clay brings to the Dolphins as a versatile pass-catcher (69-759-6 last season), blocker and situational ball carrier. Fantasy owners should be wary of a regression as new OC Bill Lazor focuses more on the run game and getting Mike Wallace involved.
Dolphins considering extension for TE Clay | 04/18/2014 5:29 PM
NewsThe Dolphins are considering a contract extension for TE Charles Clay.
ImpactClay is coming off a career-best 69/759/6 line in 2013 and graded out as a top-10 receiving tight end by Pro Football Focus. A former Jeff Ireland sixth-round pick, Clay has no ties to new GM Dennis Hickey, but is expected to be in Miami's long-term plans. The Dolphins have a history of letting players reach free agency, so there's still a good chance Clay plays out his rookie deal without a new contract.
Dolphins could look to extend TE Charles Clay | 02/08/2014 7:03 PM
NewsESPN Dolphins blogger James Walker considers TE Charles Clay a candidate for a contract extension this offseason.
ImpactA 2011 sixth-round pick, Clay significantly outperformed his contract this season and is set to make only $645,000 in the final year of his rookie deal. The Dolphins may not want to risk losing Clay to free agency in 2015, so he could be extended this offseason. Clay has shown good rapport with Ryan Tannehill and is expected to be part of Miami's long-term plans.
Charles Clay held out of end-zone vs. Jets | 12/29/2013 5:39 PM
NewsCharles Clay caught four passes for 43 yards in Sunday's Week 17 loss to the Jets.
ImpactClay secured four of the six passes thrown his way, but dropped his lone red-zone target. He also failed to convert on a critical fourth-and-inches carry in the third quarter. Despite the down game, Clay still managed to put together a nice breakout season -- finishing with 69 receptions, 763 yards, and six touchdowns. He'll be on the TE1 radar in 2014 fantasy drafts.
Charles Clay held to one catch in loss | 12/15/2013 6:43 PM
NewsCharles Clay caught one pass for six yards in Miami's Week 15 win over the Patriots.
ImpactClay was targeted only twice, and out-produced by Michael Egnew. It was a baffling day against a Patriots' linebacker corps that's struggled in coverage this season, but OC Mike Sherman likely won't be asked about it after a win. Fantasy owners have to shake off the dud heading into the final week of the playoffs. Clay entered Week 15 as fantasy's No. 7 tight end on the season. He'll be a mid-range to low-end TE1 against the Bills.
Charles Clay blows up Steelers for 7/97/2 | 12/08/2013 6:25 PM
NewsCharles Clay caught seven passes for 97 yards with two touchdowns in Sunday's Week 14 win at Pittsburgh.
ImpactClay went toe-to-toe with Troy Polamalu and won. His first touchdown came on a goal-line play in which he started inside, blocked and then leaked out for an easy 6-yarder. His second score came on a simple out pattern in which he pulled a Houdini on two tacklers and coasted up the sideline for a 12-yard score. The red-hot Clay will be a TE1 candidate in the Week 15 game against the Patriots. He has 14 catches, 177 yards and two touchdowns across the last two weeks and is now averaging 52.1 yards per game on the season.
Charles Clay held to 4/27/0 in loss | 11/24/2013 6:17 PM
NewsCharles Clay caught four passes for 27 yards in Sunday's Week 12 loss to the Panthers.
ImpactClay tied for second on the team with seven targets, but Ryan Tannehill just missed him in the end zone once and he ran all his routes short. It's the fifth time in the last six games that Clay has been held under 40 receiving yards. He'll be a borderline TE1 against a Jets defense that gave up six catches for 79 yards to Ed Dickson/Dallas Clark Sunday.
Charles Clay trucks through SD for 6/90/1 | 11/17/2013 7:22 PM
NewsCharles Clay caught six passes for 90 yards with a touchdown in Sunday's Week 11 win over the Chargers.
ImpactClay was a beast. In the third quarter, he took a simple 5-yard out from Ryan Tannehill and somehow ran through/around roughly six Chargers defenders for a 39-yard score. You don't see many tight ends capable of that. Clay is an inconsistent box-score performer because of the Dolphins offensive issues, but he has TE1 talent. He'll be a borderline top-12 play against the Panthers in Week 12.
Charles Clay reels in four passes in loss | 11/12/2013 12:51 AM
NewsCharles Clay caught four passes for 21 yards in Week 10 against the Bucs.
ImpactClay saw eight passes come his direction. He and Ryan Tannehill were on different pages on one target, while Clay ended up dropping another. Clay also carried the ball twice for zero yards. Clay hasn't topped 37 yards receiving in four weeks and is starting to look more like a high-end TE2 than low-end TE1. The Dolphins will host the Chargers in Week 11.
Charles Clay a non-factor in Week 9 win | 11/01/2013 1:27 AM
NewsCharles Clay had three catches for 22 yards in Thursday night's Week 9 win over the Bengals.
ImpactHe added one carry for 13 yards. Clay was a non-facor in the passing game and targeted just three times by Ryan Tannehill. He's on pace for 64 catches, 726 yards, and six touchdowns this season and will be a low-end TE1 option for Week 10 against the Bucs.
Charles Clay goes for 37 yards on 5 catches | 10/27/2013 6:20 PM
NewsCharles Clay caught five passes for 37 yards in the Dolphins' Week 8 loss to New England.
ImpactHe also handled a short-yardage carry, gaining the required one yard for a first down. H-back Clay has been a swiss-army knife of sorts for the Dolphins this season, getting some usage as a fullback and lots more as a tight end. He'll be a low-end TE1 entering Thursday night's clash with the Bengals.
Charles Clay catches Week 7 touchdown | 10/20/2013 5:51 PM
NewsCharles Clay caught one pass for a seven-yard touchdown in Week 7 against the Bills.
ImpactClay wound up blocking more than anticipated due to Miami's pass protection woes. It happened after a bye week, but we're not sure whether it's a sign of things to come. Clay at least made his lone reception count. He'll remain on the back-end TE1 radar when the Dolphins visit New England in Week 8.
Charles Clay posts 3/52/1 line in Week 5 loss | 10/06/2013 6:06 PM
NewsCharles Clay caught three passes for 52 yards and a touchdown in Miami's Week 5 loss to Baltimore.
ImpactClay was targeted six times and continues to emerge as a legitimate option in the passing game. He's now scored a touchdown in back-to-back weeks and will be a borderline TE1 when the Dolphins come out of their bye in Week 7 against the Bills.
Clay posts 6-42-1 line in MNF loss to Saints | 10/01/2013 12:55 AM
NewsCharles Clay caught six passes for 42 yards and one touchdown in Miami's Week 4 loss to the Saints on Monday night.
Charles Clay catches four passes in win | 09/22/2013 9:02 PM
NewsCharles Clay caught four passes for 40 yards in Week 3 against Atlanta.
ImpactClay was targeted six times on the day and dropped one pass. A week after rushing for a one-yard score, Clay didn't see any carries out of the backfield. Backup TE Dion Sims caught the game-winning one-yard touchdown Sunday. Clay remains of the TE2 radar next week against the Saints on Monday night.
Charles Clay's TD run was first NFL carry | 09/16/2013 9:48 AM
NewsCharles Clay had never recorded an NFL carry prior to Sunday's 1-yard touchdown plunge.
ImpactClay did play some fullback while at Tulsa, amassing 179 rushing attempts. "It's something we've always worked on dating back to last year, it's just a matter of how the game moves and what [the coaches] think will work," he said. Don't expect Clay to emerge as the Dolphins goal-line vulture. He remains a TE2.
Dolphins want less snaps for Charles Clay | 09/11/2013 8:32 AM
NewsOC Mike Sherman said the 64 snaps TE Charles Clay played in Week 1 were probably too much.
ImpactClay was originally slated to be an H-back and backup this season. But with Dustin Keller (knee) out for the year, he played on 91.4 percent of the offensive snaps and posted a 5/54/0 line on six targets against the Browns. The only way the Dolphins can reduce Clay's playing is if they put more trust in rookie Dion Sims (15 snaps) or Hard Knocks whipping boy Michael Egnew (21 snaps). It's hard to see that happening.
Charles Clay steps in nicely for Keller | 09/08/2013 6:14 PM
NewsCharles Clay caught five passes for 54 yards in Sunday's Week 1 win over the Browns.
ImpactWith Dustin Keller (knee) done for the season, Clay was an every-down tight end. He finished with six targets, most of which came on little out patterns and quick hits up the seam. Clay, an H-back type without much juice after the catch, is only worth a look in very deep formats. Mike Wallace is going to get more than one grab most days.
Charles Clay to be Dolphins starting TE | 08/23/2013 1:29 PM
NewsDolphins OC Mike Sherman named Charles Clay the team's starting tight end in the wake of Dustin Keller's year-ending injury.
Palm Beach Post
ImpactAt 6-foot-3, 250, Clay is an H-back type who'll now have to primarily play tight end. Keller's loss was a large blow to Miami's passing game at the short and intermediate levels. "You'd have to give the nod to Clay as the starter," Sherman said. "He'll play in a bunch of different packages." 50 catches might be Clay's 2013 ceiling. He's a long ways off the re-draft league radar.
Charles Clay recovered from knee surgery | 05/14/2013 10:18 PM
NewsDolphins TE/FB Charles Clay (meniscus surgery) is 100 percent.
Impact"I'm good and ready to go," Clay said Tuesday. Clay should enter the season as the Dolphins' No. 2 pass-catching tight end behind Dustin Keller. Fourth-round pick Dion Sims is primarily a blocker.
Dolphins FB Clay underwent knee surgery | 01/07/2013 11:12 AM
NewsDolphins TE/FB Charles Clay underwent surgery to repair the torn ligament in his right knee sustained in mid-December.
Ben Volin on Twitter
ImpactClay went under the knife after the Week 15 game. It's still unclear which ligament was damaged. As long as it's not an ACL injury, Clay should be ready for the beginning of training camp in late July.
