Bucs DE Bowers battling conditioning issues | 06/06/2014 12:05 PM
NewsBucs DE Da'Quan Bowers showed up to offseason workouts out of shape for the second year in a row.
ImpactBowers was ticketed for a starting job last summer but showed up for the offseason program overweight and relinquished the opportunity. He's now simply fighting to keep his roster spot as a rotational end behind Michael Johnson, William Gholston, and Adrian Clayborn. Bowers has 5.5 career sacks through 39 games.
Da'Quan Bowers sat out pre-draft minicamp | 04/28/2014 12:21 AM
NewsBucs DE Da'Quan Bowers sat out pre-draft minicamp due to the knee injury that cut his 2013 season short.
Tampa Bay Times
ImpactCoach Lovie Smith recently showered Bowers in praise, but Lovie has seemingly done that with every Bucs player he's inherited. "I know rehab is going well," said Smith. "He's a good football player, but he needs to prove it right now." Bowers indeed underwent surgery, presumably related to the knee woes that plagued his 2011 pre-draft process. He can't be counted on for a 2014 role.
Lovie Smith reiterates Bowers should excel | 04/25/2014 10:41 AM
NewsCoach Lovie Smith reiterated that DE Da'Quan Bowers should excel in the Bucs' new defense.
Impact"He's a good football player, but he needs to prove it right now," Smith said. "He'll get an opportunity, a player like that should be able to excel in a defense like ours." Smith said as much after he was hired, but the Bucs went out and signed RE Michael Johnson. Bowers is now the third end behind Johnson and LE Adrian Clayborn. He'll play a pure pass-rushing role should he make the team.
Lovie's staff has high hopes for Bennett | 02/06/2014 9:23 AM
NewsThe Lovie Smith coaching staff has insisted it still has high hopes for DE Da'Quan Bowers.
ImpactBowers was handed a starting job on a silver platter in 2013 yet he still blew it, falling behind Daniel Te'o-Nesheim and then William Gholston before landing on injured reserve with recurring knee woes. Now there are whispers that he'll need more surgery. As ESPN's Pat Yasinskas says, anything the Bucs get out of Bowers going forward will be considered a bonus. Both Yasinskas and our Evan Silva call defensive end Tampa's No. 1 offensive need.
Da'Quan Bowers to have surgery on knee? | 12/27/2013 9:05 AM
NewsBucs DC Bill Sheridan hinted DE Da'Quan Bowers (injured reserve) will undergo knee surgery.
Impact"He's never been well," Sheridan said. "You're trying to decide all season on whether or not to make that move. `Is he healthy enough to play? Or are we better off just getting him to have surgery and get him cleaned up and let him rehab for an offseason and come back?'" Bowers was sent to I.R. on Thursday. His current knee issue is reportedly unrelated to the one that caused him to fall to the 51st pick in the 2011 draft. Some wonder if his career is over.
Da'Quan Bowers wraps season on IR | 12/26/2013 11:09 AM
NewsBucs placed DE Da'Quan Bowers (knee) on injured reserve, ending his season.
ImpactBowers' wildly disappointing season wraps with him on the shelf. He lost his starting job to Daniel Te'o-Nesheim early on, has fallen behind William Gholston recently and contributed just seven tackles and one sack in 13 games. All this after Bowers was expected to have a huge role in the wake of Michael Bennett's departure. Note that Bowers' draft stock slid drastically back in 2011 due to his knees.
Bucs' Bowers (concussion) practicing in full | 11/21/2013 6:46 PM
NewsBucs DE Da'Quan Bowers (concussion) is practicing in full for Week 12.
ImpactThe situational pass rusher is ready to return after missing Week 11. Bowers has just half a sack in nine games this season. Bowers might not be back in Tampa for the final year of his rookie contract in 2014.

NewsBucs DE Da'Quan Bowers has been diagnosed with a concussion.

ImpactHe is week to week. Failing to earn a starting job and serving as a situational pass rusher, Bowers has been a major disappointment this season. He's notched half a sack in 163 snaps.
Bowers behind Daniel Te'o-Nesheim on depth? | 09/05/2013 4:57 PM
NewsBucs LE Da'Quan Bowers has fallen behind Daniel Te'o-Nesheim on the depth chart.
ImpactIt could just be a motivational ploy from frustrated coach Greg Schiano, but either way, Bowers took the hint. "Of course that will push me,'' Bowers said. "If that's his way of pushing me, I acknowledge that and I'm trying to do something about it." Bowers is long on talent, but seemingly short on a lot of other things. The Bucs' pass rush will be in trouble if he doesn't take a step forward.
Idea of Benching Bowers 'gaining steam'? | 08/16/2013 12:57 PM
NewsAccording to the Tampa Tribune, the idea of benching LE Da'Quan Bowers is "gaining steam" among the Bucs' coaching staff.
ImpactWe already knew coach Greg Schiano was unhappy with his third-year pro. Per reporter Roy Cummings, Schiano is "not happy with Bowers' conditioning, effort in practice or performance in last week's preseason opener against Baltimore." Bowers has a lot on the line in Friday's preseason game against the Patriots. Getting to Tom Brady a time or two could get him out of the doghouse.
Da'Quan Bowers: Conditioning is obstacle | 08/10/2013 6:57 PM
NewsBucs LE Da'Quan Bowers admits conditioning has been an obstacle in his quest to become an every-down player.
Tampa Bay Times
ImpactAt least he knows it. "I think I'm still a little winded at times," Bowers said. "I'm still not in the best shape. I'm still getting used to the speed of practice. But other than that, (training camp) has been decent." In their preseason opener, the Bucs gave Bowers more snaps than any veteran defender. He started at left defensive end and managed two tackles (one solo).
Schiano chides Bowers' effort level | 08/06/2013 2:32 PM
NewsBucs coach Greg Schiano gently chided LE Da'Quan Bowers' effort level Tuesday.
Tampa Bay Times
Impact"I want to see him play hard play after play after play after play," Schiano said. "He needs to string together some plays where he's going at a high level. ... You've got to play the dirty stuff down after down. He's going to do it, I believe he will." Bowers is making the transition from situational pass rusher to every-down player. He showed well in limited playing time last season, notching three sacks in 292 snaps.
Bucs leaning on Bowers to contribute heavily | 06/30/2013 3:23 PM
NewsThe Tampa Bay Times names Bucs LE Da'Quan Bowers as the main defensive player that needs to "break out" this season.
Tampa Bay Times
ImpactBowers has started just six games in his first two seasons, mainly playing behind since-departed DE Michael Bennett, but he's being thrust into the starting lineup in year three. He's worked himself into better shape this offseason, preparing for a bigger role. "If he wants to become anything more than just a situational pass rusher, he's got to grind through it," coach Greg Schiano said. "He's got to go through the pain of being an every-down player." We're skeptical of the Bucs' ability to generate consistent pressure in 2013.
Da'Quan Bowers expects double-digit sacks | 06/05/2013 10:32 AM
NewsBucs LE Da'Quan Bowers said anything less than double-digit sacks this season is a "failure."
ImpactBowers has posted a total of 4.5 sacks in his first 26 games. But now that Michael Bennett is gone and Bowers is healthy, the Bucs are counting on him in a big way. "I think the way Coach Schiano has the scheme set up, and my capabilities, and having Gerald [McCoy] draw all the attention, it could be a whole lot easier to get double-digits sacks," Bowers said.

Da'Quan Bowers facing gun charge Thursday | 04/11/2013 10:18 AM
NewsBucs LE Da'Quan Bowers is in a New York court Thursday to face gun charges.
ImpactBowers is arguing that since he alerted airport officials to the gun in his bag, he had no criminal intent. The Bucs are expecting him to avoid any punishment as they've let Michael Bennett walk and are counting on Bowers to be their primary pass-rusher this season. The charges are considered Class C felonies in New York and carry a mandatory minimum sentence of 3.5 years.
Bucs expect double-digit sacks from Bowers | 03/22/2013 2:27 AM
NewsBucs coach Greg Schiano expects LE Da'Quan Bowers to reach double-digit sacks in his third NFL season.
Impact"He has to," said Schiano, who clearly realizes his team is thin at defensive end. The Bucs have outwardly expressed confidence in Bowers and RE Adrian Clayborn, but Bowers has 4.5 sacks across 26 career games and Clayborn is coming off an ACL tear. They need to think about another end at the 13th overall pick.
Bucs higher on Bowers than Bennett | 03/15/2013 1:17 PM
NewsAccording to the Tampa Bay Times, part of the reason the Bucs let Michael Bennett walk in free agency is because they view DE Da'Quan Bowers as a "player with more upside."
Tampa Bay Times
ImpactBowers missed the first six games of 2012 as he recovered from a torn Achilles' tendon, but managed to notch three sacks in 10 games as a rotational rusher. He's also facing gun charges in New York, but the Bucs apparently believe he'll escape without jail time. Letting Bennett walk - for only $5 million, no less - was a risky move by the Bucs, but Bowers will make them look smart if he can live up to his potential. 2013 will be a telling year for a player who fell to No. 51 in the 2011 draft because of concerns about his knee.
Bowers a chance to earn 'minimal discipline'? | 02/19/2013 3:55 PM
NewsA New York defense attorney tells the Tampa Bay Times Bucs DE Da'Quan Bowers could escape with "minimal discipline" in his airport gun case.
Tampa Bay Times
Impact"The state of New York doesn't care what the federal law is or what other states' laws are," the attorney told the Times. "But the Queens DA has a very pragmatic approach if the gun is registered somewhere else. It might not be that bad. ... I've been very successful in Queens, in some cases even getting (charges) dismissed." All that is contingent on Bowers' gun being legally registered in his home state of South Carolina, which is believed to be the case. Why Bowers had the gun in New York and how he was transporting it will also be factors. Bowers is by no means out of the woods, but could avoid a Plaxico Burress-like fate.
Bowers' lawyer expects 'full' exoneration | 02/19/2013 2:20 PM
NewsThe lawyer for Bucs DE Da'Quan Bowers expects him to be "fully exonerated" in his airport gun case.
Profootballtalk on NBCSports.com
Impact"After a full and fair investigation of the facts and circumstances regarding this registered firearm Mr. Bowers will be fully exonerated," Bowers' lawyer told the Tampa Tribune. Bowers is hinging his defense on the fact that he alerted airport security about the gun in his bag after he realized his mistake. New York's gun laws are notoriously tough, however, meaning no amount of contriteness is a guarantee to save Bowers from at least a short stay in jail. That being said, it is unlikely the law comes down as hard on Bowers as it did on Plaxico Burress, who served 20 months in jail as part of a plea deal.
Bowers was rushing to surprise airport visit | 02/19/2013 11:02 AM
NewsBucs DE Da'Quan Bowers reportedly informed airport personnel about the loaded gun in his bag himself.
Tampa Bay Times
ImpactIn other words, Bowers did not try to sneak the gun through security. But under New York law, just having a gun in an airport is a crime. The Tampa Bay Times says Bowers has "consistently been a player of high character" throughout his NFL career and he has no history of violence or wrongdoing. We'll see if his clean record will give the "I forgot the gun was in my bag" excuse more viability.
Da'Quan Bowers faces same charges Plax did | 02/18/2013 9:01 PM
NewsUpdating a previous item, Bucs DE Da'Quan Bowers will be charged with two counts of second-degree criminal possession after showing up to New York's LaGuardia Airport with a loaded gun in his carry-on bag.
ImpactThe charge is identical to the one Plaxico Burress faced in 2008, and carries a minimum sentence of 3.5 years in prison, with a maximum of 15 years. Burress, who accidentally shot himself in the leg at a Manhattan nightclub, accepted a plea deal and served 20 months. "We are aware of the situation and are gathering information," said Bucs GM Mark Dominik. "We will withhold comment until we know all the facts."
Bowers arrested for bringing gun to airport | 02/18/2013 6:34 PM
NewsBucs DE Da'Quan Bowers was arrested at New York's LaGuardia Airport on Monday after trying to get a loaded gun through security.
NBC New York
ImpactBowers has been charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon after screeners found a loaded .40 caliber firearm in his carry-on luggage. He's set to appear in court on Monday evening. Like Shaun Rogers before him, Bowers will almost certainly insist he forgot the gun was in his bag. Rogers was not suspended for a similar incident in 2010. Billed as a character concern in the 2011 draft, this won't help Bowers' standing with disciplinarian coach Greg Schiano after his recovery from a torn Achilles' tendon limited him to just 10 games and 292 snaps last season.
