NewsVikings running back Matt Asiata (concussion) did not practice again Thursday.
ImpactHe is in the first stage of the concussion protocol and with Minnesota claiming Ben Tate off of waivers, there seems to be more than a hint that Asiata could miss Week 12. Jerick McKinnon would see a nice bump in value since Tate still doesn't know the playbook.

NewsVikings running back Matt Asiata had just four touches for 14 yards against the Bears.
ImpactThat's a huge disappointment after his three-touchdown day two weeks ago. Fantasy owners were likely hoping Asiata would take advantage to the matchup, but the Chicago offense held Minnesota to just 46 offensive plays and no attempts at the goal line.
Vikings running back Matt Asiata scored three touchdowns on Sunday against the Redskins. | 11/02/2014 7:24 PM
NewsVikings running back Matt Asiata scored three touchdowns on Sunday against the Redskins.
ImpactAsiata remains fantasy relevant as a goalie-vulture. He had 10 carries for just 26 yards. Once again, fantasy owners are unsure which Vikings running back is the better guy to start.
Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said he would like to get running back Matt Asiata more touches and rookie Jerick McKinnon fewer touches this week according to WGR. | 10/15/2014 2:03 PM
NewsVikings coach Mike Zimmer said he would like to get running back Matt Asiata more touches and rookie Jerick McKinnon fewer touches this week according to WGR.
ImpactWhy? Besides the game against the Falcons where Asiata scored three touchdowns, he has not done much to help the team. And even in that game, McKinnon outgained Asiata yardage wise. Asiata has averaged 3.5 yards per carry versus McKinnon's 5.0. The biggest reason for putting Asiata on the field more than the 15 snaps he saw in Week 6 were to help in pass protection. Asiata could continue to score on occasion, but McKinnon is still the back to owe in Minnesota.
It's clear that Vikings running back Matt Asiata is no longer the focal point of the running game after seeing just 15 snaps and two carries Sunday versus the Lions. | 10/13/2014 4:42 PM
NewsIt's clear that Vikings running back Matt Asiata is no longer the focal point of the running game after seeing just 15 snaps and two carries Sunday versus the Lions.

NewsVikings running back Matt Asiata is listed on the Week 6 injury report, but he is practicing this week.

NewsVikings running back Matt Asiata scored three times from in close to make fantasy owners who stuck by him extremely happy.
ImpactBesides the three touchdowns, Asiata also ran for 78 yards and caught three for 22 yards. That's the good news. The bad news is that rookie running back Jerick McKinnon played so well the Vikings backfield is destined to be a shared situation.
Vikings running back Matt Asiata has poor game versus New Orleans. | 09/21/2014 5:49 PM
NewsVikings running back Matt Asiata has poor game versus New Orleans.
ImpactHe had 12 rushing attempts for only 35 yards, and it is evident how much Minnesota is missing Adrian Peterson. Asiata did chip in three catches for 36 yards, but it was not enough as the Vikings fell to the Saints. Backup Jerick McKinnon was also unable to make his presence felt, totaling eight yards on four touches.
Vikings offensive coordinator Norv Turner said he will use both Matt Asiata and Jerick McKinnon in Sunday's game against the Saints according to Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press. | 09/18/2014 4:09 PM
NewsVikings offensive coordinator Norv Turner said he will use both Matt Asiata and Jerick McKinnon in Sunday's game against the Saints according to Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
ImpactTurner added that he might use one back over the other if someone gets a hot hand. Asiata will have the first opportunity to get the hot hand as he will more than likely be the starter. Asiata gained 99 yards on 21 touches against the Patriots last week, but it might be difficult for the 27-year-old to reproduce those numbers. Asiata is the safer start this week, but McKinnon is the better add long term.

NewsProFootballTalk reports that it should not be a surprise if the Vikings reverse their decision to activate running back Adrian Peterson for Week 3.
ImpactThat means Matt Asiata has a decent chance to start again against New Orleans. He rushed 13 times fo 36 yards and caught five passes for 48 yards with a touchdown versus New England in Week 2. In a pinch, he is a viable FLEX or RB2 option in 12 or 14 team leagues.

NewsMinnesota backup running back Matt Asiata isn't Adrian Peterson. OK, you already knew that.
ImpactStill, he wasn't horrible even in the 30-7 blowout. He managed 36 yards rushing and 48 yards and a touchdown receiving for a solid double-digit afternoon. Rookie Jerick McKinnon was not a factor.

NewsMinnesota backup running back Matt Asiata takes over as the starter with Adrian Peterson sidelined by legal issues.

NewsVikings halfback Matt Asiata expects to start on Sunday against the Patriots according to Ben Goessling of ESPN.
ImpactAdrian Peterson has been deactivated due to his indictment of child abuse. Asiata will get a majority of the carriers against the weak rush-defense of New England with fellow running back Kerick McKinnon getting some touches as well.
Matt Asiata getting second-team reps with MIN | 06/02/2014 11:06 AM
NewsMatt Asiata is getting the majority of second-team reps at OTAs.
ImpactThe Vikings see Jerick McKinnon as a third-down back for the most part right now. It leaves the slow-footed, 234-pound Asiata behind Adrian Peterson on early downs. He'll have a little goal-line appeal if Peterson ever misses time, but he's not a strong handcuff. McKinnon's raw athleticism should allow him to forge ahead of Asiata by midseason.
Vikings looking for running back depth | 03/24/2014 8:12 PM
NewsVikings GM Rick Spielman said the team is in the market for running back depth.
St. Paul Pioneer Press
ImpactMatt Asiata is currently lightly penciled in as the No. 2 behind Adrian Peterson. Zach Line, Joe Banyard, and Bradley Randle round out the depth chart. The free-agent market has a few capable runners still available, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see Spielman use a day-two pick on a running back. Asiata lacks lateral agility and burst and is best suited for No. 3 duties.
Vikings re-sign ERFA Matt Asiata | 03/05/2014 3:47 PM
NewsVikings re-signed exclusive rights free agent RB Matt Asiata.
Aaron Wilson on Twitter
ImpactAsiata rushed for 51 yards and three touchdowns on 30 carries in Week 15 against the Eagles before rumbling for 115 yards in the season finale. He didn't touch the ball a single time all season other than those two games. With Toby Gerhart a free agent, Asiata could climb the depth chart and become the No. 2 in Minnesota.
Asiata effective in meaningless finale | 12/29/2013 4:05 PM
NewsMatt Asiata rushed 14 times for 115 yards and lost two yards on two receptions in the Vikings' Week 17 win over Detroit.
ImpactAsiata got the start with Adrian Peterson (foot) and Toby Gerhart (hamstring) inactive. A fullback-tailback hybrid, Asiata wound up playing extensively in two games due to injuries, finishing with this stat line and 30-51-3 in Week 15. With Gerhart headed to free agency, it's not out of the realm of possibility that Asiata could be Peterson's primary backup in 2014. He'll surely face competition, however.
Vikings to start Matt Asiata against Detroit | 12/27/2013 1:56 PM
NewsThe Vikings will start Matt Asiata at tailback in Week 17 against the Lions.
Mark Craig on Twitter
ImpactAdrian Peterson is doubtful, and Toby Gerhart has been ruled out. Asiata flukishly rushed 30 times for a paltry 51 yards in a Week 15 start against the Eagles, scoring three touchdowns. This week, he's expected to rotate with Joe Banyard against a tough Detroit run defense. Asiata will not be a recommended fantasy option in daily or standard leagues that extend into Week 17.
Matt Asiata inactive for Week 16 | 12/22/2013 12:04 PM
NewsUpdating a previous item, Matt Asiata is inactive for Week 16 at Cincinnati.

Matt Asiata not practicing Thursday | 12/19/2013 6:24 PM
NewsVikings RB Matt Asiata (ankle) remained out of practice Thursday.
ImpactThe fantasy folk hero is trending in the wrong direction for Week 16. Even were Asiata to suit up, his moment in the sun has come and gone with both Adrian Peterson (foot) and Toby Gerhart (hamstring) expected to play.
Matt Asiate misses practice Wednesday | 12/18/2013 5:58 PM
NewsMatt Asiata (ankle) did not practice Wednesday.
ImpactAsiata's 30-carry workload last week against the Eagles may have been too much for him. With Adrian Peterson (foot) and Toby Gerhart (hamstring) expected to return this week, Asiata can safely be dropped in all formats.
Matt Asiata pounds in three TDs on 30 carries | 12/15/2013 4:30 PM
NewsMatt Asiata rushed 30 times for 51 yards with three touchdowns in Sunday's 48-30 Week 15 win over the Eagles.
Matt Asiata is starting for Vikings Sunday | 12/15/2013 12:20 PM
NewsMatt Asiata is expected to start Sunday's game against the Eagles with Adrian Peterson (foot) and Toby Gerhart (hamstring) inactive.
ImpactAsiata, a plodding 6'0/234 former undrafted free agent, goes from third string to first string in one week. We'd keep expectations very low. The Vikings will use practice squad callup Joe Banyard and fullback Jerome Felton for some reps, and the Eagles could very well sprint out to an early lead. If Minny is going to move the ball, it's likely to be through the air against the Eagles' No. 29 pass defense. Asiata is our No. 38 play at the running back spot this week.
Matt Asiata next man up if AP, Gerhart can't | 12/11/2013 9:56 AM
NewsMatt Asiata is the next man up if Adrian Peterson (foot) and Toby Gerhart (hamstring) can't play Sunday.
ImpactAsiata is a 6'0/234 former undrafted free agent out of Utah that beat out Joe Banyard for the No. 3 running back job in camp. During the preseason, he rushed 19 times for 67 yards (3.52 YPC) with one touchdown and caught two passes for three yards. Given Asiata's talent limitations, we'd expect the Vikings to turn to some kind of committee if both Peterson and Gerhart sit against the Eagles. Banyard is on the practice squad and fullback Jerome Felton has some experience carrying the ball. Asiata would be a wildly desperate shot in the dark.
