|Assets:||Very well-rounded: can pile up tackles but also is a threat to penetrate for sacks and drop back for pickoffs in coverage. Plays with an edge and a mean streak.|
|Flaws:||Needs to show he can overcome a notable lack of raw foot-speed. Must show he can stay consistent. Could improve at reading the offenses better. Has had some off-field trouble.|

Bills lure Spikes away from rival Patriots | 03/14/2014 10:49 PM
NewsBills agreed to terms with ILB Brandon Spikes, formerly of the Patriots, on a one-year deal.
John Wawrow on Twitter
ImpactThe Bills foreshadowed this signing when they announced second-year LB Kiko Alonso would move to weak-side linebacker, clearing the way for Spikes to man the middle. Spikes, one of the best run-stuffing linebacker in the league, will provide a solid anchor in the middle of the Bills' new 4-3 scheme.
Brandon Spikes visits Bills on Friday | 03/14/2014 12:22 PM
NewsFree agent ILB Brandon Spikes visited the Bills on Friday.
ImpactIt's Spikes' first-known visit of free agency. With the Bills ready to move Kiko Alonso to weak-side linebacker, Spikes would man the middle. He's one of the league's better run-stopping linebackers.
Free agent ILB Spikes says he's 100 percent | 03/07/2014 9:48 AM
NewsFree agent ILB Brandon Spikes (knee) says he's 100 percent healthy.
Field Yates on Twitter
ImpactSpikes ended the season on injured reserve with a knee injury but didn't need surgery. He'll be full go for OTAs and minicamp with whichever team he's playing with next. It won't be the Patriots, as Spikes said both sides could "benefit from a fresh start." Spikes is just 26 and is a top-notch run defender.
No talks between Spikes and Pats | 03/03/2014 12:28 PM
NewsThe Patriots have had no negotiations with free agent MLB Brandon Spikes this offseason, as expected.
ImpactThe Patriots aren't even going to make an effort to bring back Spikes, who has consistently ruffled feathers in New England with a lack of professionalism. On the field, he's been a strong run defender and is just 26 years old. Spikes is going to have a solid market come March 11.
Patriots will let Brandon Spikes walk | 02/09/2014 2:52 PM
NewsThe Boston Herald agrees with ESPN Boston that the Patriots will not re-sign free agent MLB Brandon Spikes.
ImpactBeat writer Jeff Howe expects Spikes to command "Rey Maualuga money," or about $6.5 million over two years. (Maualuga and Spikes have the same agent.) Spikes is a strong run defender, but can't function on passing downs and lost "his greatest ally" when LBs coach Pepper Johnson left to take the defensive line coaching job in Buffalo. 26 years old, Spikes is Rotoworld's No. 3 free agent inside linebacker behind Donald Butler and Karlos Dansby.
Patriots MLB Spikes doesn't need knee surgery | 01/13/2014 9:31 PM
NewsPatriots MLB Brandon Spikes (injured reserve) will not need offseason knee surgery.
Ian Rapoport on Twitter
ImpactSpikes suffered a PCL injury and was placed on injured reserve last week. There was a report that New England put Spikes on I.R. because he was late to Friday's practice, but we find that hard to believe. He's a premier run-stopping linebacker. Spikes, an impending free agent, isn't expected to re-sign with the Pats. Donta' Hightower and Jamie Collins filled in admirably Saturday.
Brandon Spikes not expected back with Pats | 01/13/2014 2:31 PM
NewsPer ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss, it would be a "major surprise" if the Patriots re-signed free agent ILB Brandon Spikes.
ImpactSpikes has been a stout inside run thumper, but earned something of a knucklehead reputation in four years with New England and will likely command more money than the Patriots are willing to spend. He also does not play in passing downs. Spikes was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury before the Divisional Round. He's expected to require offseason surgery.
Report: Spikes I.R.'ed due to missed practice | 01/11/2014 12:22 PM
NewsESPN's Chris Mortensen reports the Patriots placed MLB Brandon Spikes (knee) on injured reserve partly because he was late to practice last Friday.
Chris Mortensen on Twitter
ImpactSpikes had been battling a ligament issue in his knee for weeks before he was sent to I.R., so it comes as no surprise that there was more to this story. However, it's hard to believe the missed practice played a major role in the decision. The Patriots are aiming for a Super Bowl, and Spikes is their top run defender. It just happened to be the final straw. Spikes will collect his playoff pay and then head for free agency. He's our No. 3 available free-agent inside linebacker.
Brandon Spikes needs surgery on knee | 01/06/2014 5:07 PM
NewsPatriots ILB Brandon Spikes (injured reserve) is expected to undergo offseason knee surgery.
Shalise Manza Young on Twitter
ImpactPer the Boston Globe, Spikes has been battling a ligament problem "for weeks." It's a concern that Spikes will now need the operation before he enters free agency. One of the NFL's premier interior run-thumpers, a healthy Spikes would be a top-five free agent inside linebacker. Others free-agent ILB eligibles include Donald Butler, Karlos Dansby, Jon Beason, and Daryl Smith.
Patriots place MLB Brandon Spikes on I.R. | 01/06/2014 4:31 PM
NewsPatriots placed MLB Brandon Spikes (knee) on injured reserve, ending his season.
ImpactSpikes has been on and off the injury report all year with knee ailment, but there was never any indication his season wound end. The Patriots figure to turn to special teamer Dane Fletcher at middle linebacker, though they could wind up playing a lot of nickel and dime sub-packages instead, getting an extra safety on the field. Either way, losing Spikes is a blow to New England's already suspect run defense. He is a wood-laying hammer inside.
Pats downgrade MLB Spikes to questionable | 11/24/2013 10:25 AM
NewsPatriots MLB Brandon Spikes has been downgraded from probable to questionable for Sunday night's game due to a knee injury.
ImpactGame-day downgrades are never a good sign. It could be a good sign for Knowshon Moreno's Week 12 fantasy prospects, however, as Spikes is a beastly run defender. New England is already without critical DTs Vince Wilfork and Tommy Kelly, and WLB Jerod Mayo due to season-ending injuries.
Pats MLB Spikes reports for minicamp | 06/10/2013 9:10 AM
NewsPatriots MLB Brandon Spikes reported for the start of mandatory minicamp Monday.
ImpactSpikes was a no-show for OTAs as he worked out on his own, but a source insists his absence wasn't a protest as he heads into the final year of his rookie contract. Spikes would have been subject to heavy fines for missing minicamp, so it was always expected that he would report. Spikes followed the same routine last offseason en route to a breakout year.
Spikes trying to improve athleticism | 05/30/2013 7:38 PM
NewsPatriots MLB Brandon Spikes has been skipping OTAs in favor of working on his athleticism individually.
Ian Rapoport on Twitter
ImpactSpikes has been training at Bommerito Performance Systems in Florida where he's been working on his agility and overall athleticism. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport indicates Spikes wants to be viewed as a three-down linebacker heading into a contract year. There have been questions about his athleticism since entering the league, but Spikes' instincts have enabled him to be a stud against the run. Any added quickness should only boost his game.
Brandon Spikes not expected to skip minicamp | 05/26/2013 9:56 AM
NewsThe Boston Globe doesn't expect Patriots MLB Brandon Spikes to skip mandatory minicamp next month.
ImpactSpikes, entering the final year of his rookie deal, hasn't been "seen much" around the team facility, and he's also been a no-show for "voluntary" OTAs. Minicamp starts on June 11, and training camp kicks off in late July. The Patriots aren't expected to pursue a long-term deal with Spikes this summer.
Pats, Spikes likely to part ways after 2013? | 05/22/2013 10:07 AM
NewsCSN New England expects the Patriots and MLB Brandon Spikes to "part ways" after 2013.
CSN New England
ImpactSpikes is entering the final year of his rookie contract, and he hasn't participated in the conditioning phase or OTAs this spring. We wouldn't expect the Patriots to give Spikes an extension after not showing up for work, either. He's a stud against the run, but Spikes needs to cut down on the penalties.
Brandon Spikes to report to Patriots in June | 05/20/2013 4:29 PM
NewsAlthough he was absent for the start of OTAs Monday, Patriots ILB Brandon Spikes will report to the team for June 11-13 minicamp.
ImpactPer the Boston Herald, Spikes simply feels working out on his own "is the best way to prepare for the upcoming season," and has "nothing to do" with his contract status. Spikes is in a contract year. So while the division-rival Dolphins have two players upset about money (Reshad Jones, Randy Starks), Spikes' situation is different because he fully intends to rejoin the team on June 11.
Brandon Spikes absent as Pats open OTAs | 05/20/2013 3:10 PM
NewsPatriots ILB Brandon Spikes was not in attendance as the club opened OTAs on Monday.
ImpactSpikes "wasn't seen much" in the early-offseason conditioning phase, and he's not at voluntary OTAs, either. Spikes is entering a contract year, and may be attempting to increase his leverage by staying away from workouts. That usually doesn't work. Expect Spikes to be at the facility on day one of training camp.
Spikes staying away from Pats headquarters | 05/19/2013 9:28 AM
NewsESPN Boston reports ILB Brandon Spikes "hasn't been seen much" since the start of the Patriots' offseason program.
ImpactIt's an interesting strategy for a player going into the final year of his rookie contract, but there have been no reports Spikes is planning to skip this week's "voluntary" OTAs. Going on 26, Spikes is coming off his strongest campaign. He started 14 games last season, grading out as Pro Football Focus' No. 9 inside linebacker. Spikes offers little on passing downs, but could put himself in position for a nice payday with a similarly strong 2013.
Spikes' salary jumps to $630K after escalator | 01/30/2013 6:53 PM
NewsPatriots MLB Brandon Spikes' 2013 salary jumped from $575,000 to $630,000 based on rookie-deal incentives.
ImpactSpikes had a career year in 2012, starting 14 games and registering 92 tackles. He's proven to be stout against the run, but he's part of a slow linebacker corps in New England that struggles against the pass. Entering the final year of his contract, Spikes will remain an inside thumper for New England.
