Stafford will have more pre-snap freedom | 06/12/2014 11:12 PM
NewsMatthew Stafford is expected to have more freedom to change plays pre-snap under new OC Joe Lombardi.
ImpactStafford had some freedom under former OC Scott Linehan, but Lombardi comes from a New Orleans system in which Drew Brees is allowed improvise freely at the line. Brees has earned that right through his play, and new coach Jim Caldwell cautioned Stafford will earn more pre-snap responsibilities the longer he spends in the offense. More freedom at the line could bring with it more efficiency for Stafford, who has completed more than 60% of his passes only once in his five-year career, and should allow Stafford to put Calvin Johnson and Golden Tate in better positions to make plays. Stafford is a clear-cut QB1 with top-3 upside.

Bush: New Lions' scheme is same as Saints' | 05/22/2014 8:05 AM
NewsReggie Bush said the Lions' new offensive scheme is "exactly the same" as the one he learned while with the Saints.
Detroit Free Press
ImpactFirst-year offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi spent the last seven years as an offensive assistant for the Saints. During that time, New Orleans' offense ranked first, second, first, sixth, first, first and fourth. In Detroit, Lombardi and Matthew Stafford will have even better weapons in Calvin Johnson, Golden Tate, Eric Ebron, Reggie Bush and Joique Bell. They're installing the up-tempo philosophy that is the trademark of the game's truly elite offenses. Stafford is a clear-cut top-five fantasy quarterback as he executes the Drew Brees role.
Caldwell adamant he can fix Stafford's issues | 03/25/2014 4:54 PM
NewsNew Lions coach Jim Caldwell is adamant that he can fix Matthew Stafford's mechanics.
ImpactSpecifically, Caldwell wants Stafford to improve his throwing habits in practice. "Every single time you throw, you throw at a target," Caldwell said. "You work on your accuracy just constantly and you look at small targets. That's what gets you accustomed to being able to pinpoint your accuracy." Stafford has had a cavalier attitude about his cavalier throws, but it's not going to fly with Caldwell. Stafford's 58.5 completion percentage last season was his lowest since his rookie year.
Lions add yet another tutor for Stafford | 02/10/2014 12:00 PM
NewsLions hired Jim Bob Cooter as quarterbacks coach.
ImpactMatthew Stafford said he didn't want or need a tutor to work on his mechanics. He now has three coaches with strong backgrounds in coaching up quarterbacks. Head coach Jim Caldwell helped develop Peyton Manning in Indy, offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi was Drew Brees' position coach in New Orleans and Cooter spent last year with Manning in Denver. We're fully expecting Stafford's completion percentage to rise and his interceptions to drop under the new regime.
Lombardi sees Stafford's footwork as issue | 02/07/2014 2:26 PM
NewsNew Lions OC Joe Lombardi hinted that he sees Matthew Stafford's footwork as a correctable problem.
ImpactIt's a bit of a touchy subject in Detroit because of Stafford's past opposition to changing his mechanics, but good news that Lombardi has identified this as an issue. "Matthew has got such a talented arm that I think there are times when he is making throws that you say, 'Hey, maybe you shouldn't have thrown that because of the position of your feet' or whatnot," said Lombardi. Lombardi worked with technically sound Drew Brees for the last seven years. He's going to prioritize improving Stafford's mechanics.
Lombardi was hired to help Stafford | 02/03/2014 9:59 AM
NewsNew OC Joe Lombardi was hired "chiefly" because the Lions believe he can help rejuvenate Matthew Stafford.
ImpactLombardi has been working with Drew Brees/Sean Payton since 2007, first as a Saints offensive assistant and then as their quarterbacks coach. "I feel like we were right on the cutting edge of creativity with what we were able to do with personnel and that kind of thing (in New Orleans)," Brees said. "I see some similarities, obviously, to what Detroit has with their offensive personnel. I'm sure [Lombardi] is going to be very creative with those guys. It's just his talent." Stafford will also be getting tutelage from new head coach Jim Caldwell, who spent a decade coaching Peyton Manning. Stafford's mechanics and efficiency are excellent bets to improve in 2014.
Lions admit Matthew Stafford needs work | 01/26/2014 10:42 AM
NewsLions GM Martin Mayhew admitted that "there certainly has to be some work done" with Matthew Stafford.
ImpactStafford's completion percentage has dipped three consecutive seasons, falling from 63.5 percent in 2011 to 59.8 in 2012 to 58.5 this past season. He also turned the ball over a career-worst 23 times in 2013, while his footwork remains shoddy. The Lions have brought in some quality men to work with Stafford. New coach Jim Caldwell has a history with quarterbacks, and new OC Joe Lombardi spent the past seven seasons with Drew Brees. We remain high on Stafford for 2014.

NewsNew coach Jim Caldwell plans to focus on improving Matthew Stafford's footwork.
Matthew Stafford on QB tutor: 'Not my thing' | 12/27/2013 2:32 PM
NewsAsked Friday whether he would consider working with a quarterback guru during the offseason, Matthew Stafford replied "It's not my thing."
Kyle Meinke on Twitter
ImpactThe Lions' coaching staff under Jim Schwartz and Scott Linehan has consistently let Stafford wing it in terms of fundamentals, which has resulted in wild ups and downs. "It's not something that I feel would be my style or beneficial to me," said Stafford. "I have not (considered a QB tutor)." There are problems outside of mechanics that have led to Stafford's inconsistency, but it was clearly a major issue for the second straight year in 2013, particularly down the stretch. The Lions' next coaching staff needs to make polishing up Stafford a primary priority for the offseason.
Stafford picked twice as Lions are eliminated | 12/22/2013 7:45 PM
NewsMatthew Stafford completed 25-of-42 passes for 222 yards and two interceptions as the Lions were eliminated from playoff contention in Sunday's Week 16 overtime loss to the Giants.
ImpactHaving Calvin Johnson (knee) at significantly less than 100 percent -- plus Joique Bell and Theo Riddick vulturing goal-line scores -- severely limited Stafford's box-score stats. Stafford seemed to be settling down in the second half after an ugly first two quarters until he was pick sixed in the fourth frame by Giants S Will Hill. It was Detroit's third turnover of the game, coming on a brutally inaccurate throw by Stafford intended for Joseph Fauria. The No. 3 fantasy quarterback almost all season, Stafford has now strung together three consecutive clunkers. The Lions will face Minnesota in a meaningless Week 17 game.
Schwartz gives Stafford a vote of confidence | 12/18/2013 9:28 AM
NewsCoach Jim Schwartz gave Matthew Stafford a vote of confidence Tuesday.
ImpactIt's comical, but Schwartz was asked if he ever considered pulling Stafford out of Monday night's loss to the Ravens in favor of Shaun Hill. "We need to be better around him ?" blocking, catching, running the ball," the embattled coach said. "We do that and we support the quarterback. It's not just about one person, but we will get him back." Although Stafford's nine interceptions across the last four games are ugly, he's busted out of mini-slumps in a monster way many times before. He'll remain an elite QB1 in a home game against the Giants Sunday.
Stafford tosses 3 INTs in MNF loss to Ravens | 12/16/2013 11:49 PM
NewsMatthew Stafford completed 18-of-34 passes for 235 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions in Detroit's Week 15, 18-16 loss to the Ravens on Monday night.
ImpactStafford was brutal for much of the night. His first interception was a ball that was tipped at the line of scrimmage by Haloti Ngata, the second was a side-armed fling to nobody over the middle of the field, and the third and final pick was an overthrow down the middle that ended up in Matt Elam's hands with 38 seconds left in the game. Stafford was also hurt by drops. Calvin Johnson wasn't himself and dropped three or four passes. Two were flat-out bad. The Lions have lost two in a row and sit at 7-7, third place in the NFC North. They're in serious trouble. If both the Packers and Bears win next week, the Lions are eliminated. Detroit will host the Giants at home in Week 16.
Matthew Stafford struggling in fourth quarter | 12/10/2013 1:39 PM
NewsMatthew Stafford has a 30.2 fourth-quarter quarterback rating over his past four starts, with the Lions going 1-3 in the process.
Tim Twentyman on Twitter
ImpactStafford had an exceptionally poor fourth quarter in Sunday's snowy loss to the Eagles, and was nearly as bad in Week 11 against the Steelers. There's not a whole lot to read into it, however, as Stafford's season mark of 91.7 in the final period is his best for any quarter. He'll have to be on his game in the fourth quarter on Monday, where the Lions will likely be locked into a tight game with the Ravens.
Matthew Stafford goes ice cold in 2nd half | 12/08/2013 5:21 PM
NewsMatthew Stafford completed 10-of-25 passes for 148 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions in Sunday's Week 14 loss at Philadelphia.
ImpactStafford handled the snowy conditions extremely poorly. He was only charged with one lost fumble, but there were at least six botched exchanges. Stafford normally throws one of the tightest spirals in the league, but his passes in this one looked like wounded ducks as he completed just four passes in the entire second half (when the snow actually let up). Chalk this one up to the conditions and move on with Stafford as a top-five option at home against the Ravens on Monday Night Football in Week 15.
Stafford, Lions dismantle Rodgers-less Pack | 11/28/2013 3:46 PM
NewsMatthew Stafford completed 22-of-35 passes for 330 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions in Detroit's 40-10, Week 13 walloping of the Packers.
ImpactStafford made some mistakes - both of his picks were badly under-thrown, while he nearly got Joique Bell killed on an ill-advised screen - but mostly did whatever he wanted against the Packers' hapless defense. The Lions' ground game blazed a trail on first and second down as Detroit out-gained Green Bay an astonishing 561-126. At times, the game had the feel of an SEC team vs. an FCS cupcake. The only curiosity was Stafford's failure to find Nate Burleson for a single reception. Either way, it was a dominant performance from the league's purest gunslinger. Stafford is easily fantasy's No. 3 quarterback.
Stafford throws 4 INTs as Lions fall to Bucs | 11/24/2013 5:12 PM
NewsMatthew Stafford completed 26-of-46 passes for 297 yards, three touchdowns, and four interceptions in the Lions' Week 12 loss to Tampa Bay.
ImpactHe rushed twice for six yards. Fantasy owners will take the three scores and nearly 300 yards every time, but this was a "bad Stafford" day to the fullest. He missed another easy score to Calvin Johnson streaking up the seam late in the first half, and consistently threw off of his back foot, leading to several picks. Stafford would be better off if he played under control more often, but we've come to learn that this is simply the way he operates. He'll still be a top-five QB1 when the Lions face Green Bay on Thanksgiving Thursday.
Stafford Jekyll-and-Hydes in crushing loss | 11/17/2013 4:48 PM
NewsMatthew Stafford completed 19-of-46 passes for 362 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in Detroit's Week 11 loss to the Steelers.
ImpactIt was the tale of two halves for Stafford, who entered halftime with 327 yards and two touchdowns to Calvin Johnson, but could manage only 35 after the break. Stafford's play clearly slipped in the second half, but he was hurt by a number of brutal drops from his slipshod receiver. A rainstorm and improved play from the Steelers' defense didn't help. Stafford found Megatron for a 79-yard bomb on play action in the second quarter, but threw a pick on the same play with time running out in the fourth. All in all, it was a frustrating game for fantasy's No. 3 quarterback, but hardly a worrying one. Stafford should keep on rolling in Week 12 against the Bucs.

Stafford throws four touchdowns in Week 6 win | 10/13/2013 4:30 PM
NewsMatthew Stafford completed 25-of-43 passes for 248 yards, four touchdowns, and an interception in Sunday's Week 6 win over the Browns.
ImpactStafford was playing without Calvin Johnson for most of the first half and forced to check down to Reggie Bush and Kris Durham -- averaging just 5.8 yards per attempt. He didn't get any help from his receivers, but was able to convert in red-zone situations and threw all of his touchdown inside the 25-yard line. Stafford added two carries for six yards and was only sacked once. He'll remain a QB1 in a matchup with the Bengals next week.
Matthew Stafford throws for 242 yards in win | 09/29/2013 4:21 PM
NewsMatthew Stafford completed 23-of-35 passes for 242 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Detroit's 40-32 Week 4 win over the Bears.
ImpactStafford was off the mark for a majority of the game, but cashed in on a big afternoon from Reggie Bush, and a terrible one from Jay Cutler. Stafford's accuracy was erratic, but he stuck just enough throws for a Detroit to rush out to a big halftime lead, including a number of his favorite sidearm numbers. He found five different players for at least three catches. Stafford enters the season's quarter pole on pace for 5,048 yards and 28 touchdowns. The 5K campaign would be his second in three years.
Stafford solid, but Lions fall to Cardinals | 09/15/2013 7:42 PM
NewsMatthew Stafford completed 24-of-36 passes for 278 yards and two touchdowns in the Lions' Week 2 loss to Arizona.
ImpactStafford started off with a red-hot first half, but Detroit got owned in time of possession during the final two quarters as a Reggie Bush turnover as well as weak defense cost them the battle. Through two weeks, Stafford has 635 passing yards and a 4:1 TD-to-INT ratio. You'll be able to argue he's a top-five fantasy quarterback play against a weak Redskins defense in Week 3.
Stafford throws for 357 yards, two touchdowns | 09/08/2013 4:41 PM
NewsMatthew Stafford completed 28-of-43 passes for 357 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception in Sunday's win over the Vikings.
ImpactStafford did most of his damage in the short passing game and on designed screens to Reggie Bush and Joique Bell. With Calvin Johnson drawing constant double teams, he completed at least one pass to eight different receivers. The Lions are a more balanced offense this season, but Stafford still managed 43 passing attempts and had a 65 percent completion percentage. He'll be a high-end QB1 for next week's game against the Cardinals.
Stafford largely struggling in preseason | 08/22/2013 9:33 PM
NewsMatthew Stafford completed 12-of-25 passes for 166 yards and a touchdown in the Lions' third preseason game.
ImpactMegatron didn't play for the third preseason game in a row, so take these numbers with a grain of salt. Stafford still has mechanical flaws, but the Lions are going to be the pass-happiest team in football again. Even their running back (Reggie Bush) is essentially a receiver, and the duo showed outstanding chemistry Thursday night, hooking up five times for 103 yards in the passing game. Through three exhibition affairs, Stafford is 26-of-49 (53.1 percent) for 298 yards (6.08 YPA), one touchdown, and no picks.
Lions off to slow start in preseason | 08/20/2013 8:34 AM
NewsThe Lions' first-team offense hasn't produced a touchdown through seven preseason possessions.
ImpactThey have managed just seven first downs through seven drives. Matthew Stafford is 14-of-24 for 132 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. Reggie Bush has rushed 11 times for just 21 yards (1.90 YPC). This all sounds bad, but there's little reason to overreact. Calvin Johnson sat out the first game and the Lions faced a very underrated Browns defense in the second game. Expect Stafford and company to get going against the Patriots in Thursday's dress rehearsal against the Patriots.
Matthew Stafford wants to throw fewer passes | 07/16/2013 1:51 PM
NewsMatthew Stafford wants to attempt fewer passes this season after rattling off a league record 727 in 2012.
Impact"A lot of the time, we were throwing the ball because of circumstance," Stafford said. "We were behind in games late in the game and it's tough to justify handing the ball off a lot and trying to get back into it. ... That was kind of a thing of circumstance but at the same time we have to find a way to be more explosive in the run game and a little bit more balanced as well." There's almost no way Stafford will approach last year's attempts, but we'd still expect him to throw in the neighborhood of 650 times. The Lions are going to remain one of the league's pass-happiest teams.
Lions sign Stafford to 3-year, $53M extension | 07/10/2013 1:49 PM
NewsLions signed QB Matthew Stafford to a three-year, $53 million extension through 2017.
ImpactStafford officially signed the deal Wednesday morning. He's now due $76.5 million through 2017, which will be his age-29 season. The deal includes $41.5 million guaranteed, a $27.5 million signing bonus and puts Stafford in line for another mega-contract before his 30th birthday. Through 45 career starts, Stafford is the owner of an 82.8 QB rating, an 80:54 TD:INT ratio and 12,807 yards. One of just four players in league history to surpass 5,000 yards in a single season, Stafford could be in for a major bounce-back campaign if he cleans up his mechanics. We believe he will.
Stafford's deal includes $41.5M guaranteed | 07/09/2013 5:32 PM
NewsMatthew Stafford's three-year extension will reportedly be worth $53 million, and include $41.5 million guaranteed.
ImpactThe deal reportedly includes a $27.5 million signing bonus, and will net Stafford $76.5 million between now and 2017. It's expected to clear a combined $7 million in cap space the next two seasons. Stafford was set to count $20.8 million against the cap in 2013, and $19.3 million in 2014. The pact should be officially announced within the next 48 hours.
Report: Lions/Stafford nearing mega extension | 07/09/2013 2:20 PM
NewsESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Lions are on the verge of a "blockbuster" extension with Matthew Stafford, and that it could be signed as early as Tuesday.
Adam Schefter on Twitter
ImpactThe Detroit Free Press reports Stafford's contract will be extended by three years, locking him up through 2017. Stafford's 2013 cap number is a whopping $20.8 million, but shouldn't be dramatically reduced in a new deal, as the incentive to clear cap space for this season has already come and gone. Stafford's $19.3 million 2014 cap number should be slashed, however. Stafford is coming off a rocky campaign, but has piled up a gargantuan 10,005 yards passing the past two seasons. He'll be just 29 in 2017.
Lions won't negotiate with Stafford in-season | 06/08/2013 6:27 PM
NewsThe Lions don't plan to negotiate a contract extension with Matthew Stafford during the season.
ImpactThe team has made no secret about its desire to get a long-term deal worked out, but there is no rush to do so. Stafford still has two years left on his contract. "We've still got discussions to have, but at some point in time, we'll either get a deal done, or we'll focus on football," president Tom Lewand said. It doesn't appear that the two sides will come to terms this summer.
Matthew Stafford extension not coming in '13? | 05/04/2013 5:39 PM
NewsMLive.com's Anwar Richardson doesn't believe a Matthew Stafford contract extension will happen this offseason.
ImpactThe Lions met with Stafford's representatives in February, but talks never got off the ground. The 25-year-old has stated that he's willing to accept less to stay in Detroit, but it's in his best interests to wait. He could make more money if the Lions go back to the playoffs and win a postseason game. Stafford has two years and a club option left on his current contract, so there's no rush.
Stafford wants 'fair-market value' | 04/16/2013 7:06 PM
NewsMatthew Stafford says he only wants "fair-market value" with his impending extension, and that he's willing to take less so the Lions can spend more on his supporting cast.
Detroit Free Press
Impact"I want talent around me, frankly," Stafford said Tuesday. "Everywhere in the league you see guys breaking records with how much they're making and all that kind of stuff. ... I don't really care about breaking (salary) records too much. I want to break records on the field." It's a noble sentiment, but "fair-market value" for Stafford will still easily exceed $50 million guaranteed. The Detroit Free Press considers it "just a matter of time" before the sides agree to an extension.
Matthew Stafford a regular at Lions facility | 04/14/2013 4:21 PM
NewsAfter spending his first few NFL offseasons down south, Matthew Stafford has been a regular at the Lions' facility this spring.
Detroit Free Press
Impact"There is not a guy that's done more for this franchise in this offseason than Matthew Stafford," said club president Tom Lewand. "The guy's been in the building every day. He's been living here the entire offseason." Also helping to "recruit" free agents like Reggie Bush, Stafford is improving his case for a hefty long-term extension. The Detroit Free Press calls it "just a matter of time" before the sides strike a deal worth over $100 million.
No progress on Matthew Stafford talks yet | 03/19/2013 8:07 AM
NewsGM Martin Mayhew said there hasn't been any progress on Matthew Stafford's contract extension talks yet.
Detroit Free Press
ImpactStafford has two years left on the six-year, $72 million deal he signed as a rookie in 2009. The Lions will have to make him one of the highest paid quarterbacks in the league, but a new deal would also free up some cap space. Stafford's 2013 cap number is a whopping $20.8 million even though his base salary is only $12.5 million. "It's going to be a process to get that done and we're working on getting it done now," Mayhew said.
Lions have had preliminary talks w/ Stafford | 02/27/2013 9:53 PM
NewsNFL Network's Albert Breer confirms the Lions have held preliminary extension talks with Matthew Stafford.
Albert Breer on Twitter
Impact"Nothing pressing at this point," added Breer. This is old news, though, as the local writers have been on top of the matter since earlier in the month. Stafford's 2013 cap hit sits at $20.8 million, but president Tom Lewand says the possible extension won't be for salary cap purposes, rather that Detroit still holds the former No. 1 pick in high regard.
Lions, Stafford begin long-term talks | 02/22/2013 10:34 AM
NewsThe Lions met with Matthew Stafford's agent Thursday, beginning long-term talks.
Chris McCosky on Twitter
ImpactGM Martin Mayhew says the sides had "good talks." Stafford's 2013 cap hit is a formidable $20.8 million, making an extension a near necessity for the Lions. The No. 1 pick of the 2009 draft has two years left on his rookie contract. He should get locked up sooner rather than later.
Lewand: Stafford extension not for cap relief | 02/16/2013 11:03 AM
NewsDetroit Lions president Tom Lewand said it is important to rework quarterback Matthew Stafford's current contract, but not for salary-cap relief.
Impact'The reason to have an extension with Matthew, just like the reason to have the extension with Calvin [Johnson] last year, was to secure their services for a long period of time," said Lewand. Stafford has two more years remaining on his contract, and will earn a base salary of $12 million in 2013, but his salary cap hit is $20.8 million. He will earn $11 million in 2014 ($19.3 million salary cap number) and $15 million in 2015 ($17.7 million salary cap number). Johnson's extension dropped his cap number for 2012 from $21 million to $11.5 million, and the Lions could free up a similar amount of room with a new deal for Stafford.
Mayhew: Stafford extension still a priority | 02/07/2013 3:52 PM
NewsAccording to Lions GM Martin Mayhew, there hasn't been a "whole lot of dialog" about extending Matthew Stafford's contract, but it remains a priority.
ImpactIt's a priority because Stafford is currently set to count a staggering $20.82 million against the cap. Stafford is also only signed through 2015, while the going rate for franchise quarterbacks is continuing to skyrocket. A major discount is unlikely, but locking Stafford up coming off a down season should be a calculated risk worth taking for the Lions.
Lions owe Stafford $500,000 performance bonus | 01/26/2013 8:12 PM
NewsAccording to the Detroit Free Press, Matthew Stafford received a $500,000 performance bonus in his contract for 2013.
Detroit Free Press
ImpactStafford's base salary is now $12.5 million, and his cap number has increased to $20.82 million. The Lions have stated that they intend to renegotiate or extend Stafford this offseason, and haven't lost faith in him as their franchise quarterback. Stafford is currently singed through 2014 with a $15 million option for 2015.
The Lions have not lost faith in Stafford | 01/05/2013 10:26 AM
NewsLions GM Martin Mayhew stated Friday that the organization has not lost faith in Matthew Stafford as their franchise quarterback.
Detroit Free Press
Impact"He's a phenomenal player, great teammate. The guy's got tremendous skill level, great arm talent. He's our guy," said Mayhew. Stafford barely missed his second straight 5,000-yard passing season, throwing for 4,967 yards and setting an NFL single-season record with 727 attempts. However, his 20 touchdown passes was largely a disappointment in fantasy circles. Mayhew's vote of confidence comes on the heels of reports that the Lions intend on giving Stafford a new deal this off-season for salary-cap reasons.
