Redskins, Orakpo unlikely to reach agreement | 07/15/2014 8:59 AM
NewsCSN Washington reports the Redskins and franchise player OLB Brian Orakpo are unlikely to agree to a long-term deal before Tuesday afternoon's deadline.
ImpactThe two sides have until 4 PM ET. Orakpo and the Redskins were not close in their negotiations back in March, and not much progress has been made since. Orakpo will play out the season on his $11.455 million tender and can be tagged again next spring at $13.7 million. He's a legit threat for double-digit sacks.
Redskins expected to unleash Orakpo on QBs | 04/14/2014 10:55 AM
NewsThe new Redskins coaching staff is expected to allow Brian Orakpo and Ryan Kerrigan to rush the quarterback more often this season.
ImpactJim Haslett remains the Redskins' defensive coordinator, but new head coach Jay Gruden is preaching aggression defensively. Orakpo racked up 10 sacks last year despite rushing the passer just 363 times, 16th-most in the league among 3-4 outside linebackers. This year, he should get at least 100 more chances to attack the quarterback. CSN Washington's Tarik El-Bashir is projecting 14-16 sacks.
Brian Orakpo signs his $11M franchise tender | 03/27/2014 9:16 AM
NewsRedskins signed OLB Brian Orakpo to his one-year, $11.455 million franchise tender.
ImpactIn some cases, franchise players hold off on signing the tender as a statement. Orakpo isn't messing around. Coach Jon Gruden already hinted that he wants to see his best defender improve on the field before signing him to a mammoth long-term deal, and Orakpo has said he has no problem with that. Still just 27 years old, he projects as one of the most coveted free agents that will hit the market in 2015.
Redskins to make Orakpo earn new deal? | 03/26/2014 12:40 PM
NewsCoach Jay Gruden hinted that the Redskins will not work out a long-term deal with franchise player Brian Orakpo prior to the season.
Brian Orakpo won't sign franchise tender soon | 03/03/2014 2:07 PM
NewsNFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Brian Orakpo has "no plans" to sign his franchise tender, and it "may be a while."
Ian Rapoport on Twitter
ImpactThe team was aware of this "risk" when it tagged him. Orakpo doesn't need to sign the tag to negotiate a long-term deal with Washington, which surely would be GM Bruce Allen's preference. Orakpo is free to skip pre-training camp activities as long as he's not signed. The Skins retained DC Jim Haslett's system, so missing OTAs would be of no concern for Orakpo's performance.
Redskins assign franchise tag to Brian Orakpo | 03/03/2014 1:28 PM
NewsRedskins assigned the franchise tag to OLB Brian Orakpo.
ImpactHe's the fourth NFL player tagged, joining Saints TE Jimmy Graham, Panthers DE Greg Hardy, and Jets K Nick Folk. We were surprised to see a groundswell of support among "Skins fans" for letting Orakpo walk when he's going-away their most valuable player on defense. Although Orakpo has yet to truly realize his immense potential, he's a 27-year-old edge presence who fills against the run and recorded ten sacks last season. Refusing to let Orakpo hit the market was a no-brainer move by GM Bruce Allen. The Skins can now use the rest of the offseason to build around their standout OLB duo of "Rak Attack" and Ryan Kerrigan.
Falcons keeping 'close eye' on Orakpo | 03/03/2014 11:49 AM
NewsESPN Falcons reporter Vaughn McClure expects the team to keep a "close eye" on free agent Brian Orakpo's situation in D.C.
ImpactSome reports indicate the Redskins are prepared to tag Orakpo before today's 4PM ET deadline; others suggest they won't. If Orakpo does hit the market, McClure expects Atlanta to "at least check into the price of the talented pass-rusher with hopes of adding him." The Falcons are among the most pass-rush needy teams in football. If Orakpo were signed, DC Mike Nolan would very likely consider moving to a 3-4. Orakpo is a 3-4 outside linebacker.
Werder: Redskins are willing to tag Orakpo | 03/03/2014 10:31 AM
NewsUpdating a previous item, ESPN's Ed Werder says the Redskins are prepared to use the franchise tag on OLB Brian Orakpo.
Ed Werder on Twitter
ImpactCBS' Jason La Canfora is hearing the exact opposite as he reported Monday morning that the Redskins are unlikely to use the tag. It's a game of poker. The two sides are working on a long-term deal and the tag is leverage GM Bruce Allen can hang over Orakpo's head. He wants his top pass rusher back, but only at the right price. The Redskins can't afford to overpay with so many holes on their roster.
Brian Orakpo unlikely to get franchise tag | 03/03/2014 9:50 AM
NewsCBS' Jason La Canfora says free agent OLB Brian Orakpo is unlikely to get the franchise tag before Monday's 4pm ET deadline.
ImpactOrakpo and the Redskins are not close to a long-term deal either. So as of right now, it looks like they'll let their top pass rusher hit the open market on March 11 and see what the market bears. Per La Canfora, a former Redskins beat writer, "Orakpo's health and erratic production have given them pause in the past." It's a sticky situation for the Redskins, who have holes all over the roster and are grappling with how much they can sink into one position.
Report: Orakpo expected to hit open market | 03/01/2014 3:05 PM
NewsCBS Sports' Jason La Canfora "would be very surprised" if free agent OLB Brian Orakpo did not hit the open market.

Orakpo has not received an official offer | 03/01/2014 1:54 PM
NewsThe Washington Post is reporting the Redskins have yet to officially offer free agent OLB Brian Orakpo a contract.
ImpactTalks on a long-term deal are ongoing, but the lack of an official offer could hint at a large gulf between the two sides. Washington still has the option to franchise tag Orakpo, but March 3, the deadline for tagging a player, is fast approaching. It is becoming more and more likely Orakpo reaches the open market.
Brian Orakpo looking to test the open market | 02/28/2014 5:53 PM
NewsESPN Redskins reporter John Keim wouldn't rule out free agent OLB Brian Orakpo reaching the open market.
Franchise tag a strong option for Orakpo | 02/17/2014 9:07 AM
NewsESPN Redskins reporter John Keim considers the franchise tag a "strong option" for free agent OLB Brian Orakpo.
ImpactTeams can start tagging players Monday and are able to do so until March 3. Orakpo is one of the top free agents on the market, checking in as our No. 1 outside linebacker available, and has been deemed a top priority to retain for the Redskins. The two sides have begun long-term contract talks, but the franchise tag could buy additional time if a deal can't be reached in two weeks.
Skins have begun talks with FA Orakpo | 02/05/2014 8:06 AM
NewsGM Bruce Allen said the Redskins have begun contract talks with free agent OLB Brian Orakpo.
ImpactThe Redskins will stick with the 3-4 as they transition to the Jay Gruden era, and there aren't many better edge players for the scheme than Orakpo. He's piled up 39.5 sacks in 64 career games and is coming off a career year that saw him grade out as a top-four player at his position according to PFF. Allen has also opened talks with ILB Perry Riley and DB DeAngelo Hall, but re-signing the 27-year-old Orakpo should be the top priority. Last year's top rush linebacker available, Paul Kruger, landed a five-year, $41 million deal with the Browns.
Brian Orakpo hints he'll sit out Week 17 | 12/24/2013 5:52 PM
NewsSpeaking Tuesday, Redskins OLB Brian Orakpo (groin) hinted he isn't optimistic he'll suit up for Sunday's finale.
Impact"(I'm) limited," Orakpo said. "We'll see as the week progresses. I'm pretty banged up. It's just one of those type strain injuries that you have to deal with." Orakpo acknowledged his impending free agency is a consideration. "We'll see; I'm not going to be stupid," Orakpo said. "If I feel good, I'm going to try and give it a go." Considering Orakpo's injury history, he has little incentive to suit up for a meaningless game as he prepares to get paid.
Brian Orakpo (groin) considered day to day | 12/23/2013 5:56 PM
NewsRedskins OLB Brian Orakpo (groin) is considered day to day.
ImpactOrakpo departed Sunday's loss in the fourth quarter. Coach Mike Shanahan said his status will be updated on Wednesday. With nothing to play for, the 'Skins will almost certainly hold their top pass rusher out against the Giants. Amidst a monster contract drive, Orakpo has zero incentive to risk further injury.
Brian Orakpo down for Redskins | 12/22/2013 3:20 PM
NewsRedskins OLB Brian Orakpo left Sunday's Week 15 game against the Cowboys with a right groin strain.
ImpactOrakpo was executing a standard pass rush when he pulled up lame and immediately grabbed the inside of his upper leg in pain. It looked like a pretty severe pull. Orakpo, in the midst of a monster contract year, will likely shut it down for the season. He can't jeopardize his upcoming payday.
Brian Orakpo continues contract year push | 12/16/2013 10:24 AM
NewsBrian Orakpo tallied eight tackles, 1.5 sacks and three tackles for a loss in Sunday's Week 15 loss at Atlanta.
ImpactOrakpo's contract-year push continues. The edge rusher has appeared in all 14 games, posting 58 tackles, 10 sacks, one interception and nine tackles for a loss. He's on the verge of setting career-high marks in all those categories, came into this week as PFF's No. 2 3-4 OLB and is going to be a hot commodity in March. The 27-year-old Orakpo has previously said his preference is to re-sign with the Redskins.
Brian Orakpo wants to re-sign with Skins | 12/05/2013 8:24 AM
NewsOLB Brian Orakpo said his preference is to "absolutely" re-sign with the Redskins.
ImpactOrakpo's rookie contract is up after this season and he's going to be a hot commodity if he reaches the open market. The 27-year-old edge rusher has 38 sacks in his first 61 NFL games, including 5.5 in the last four outings. The Redskins will have the cap space to bring back Orakpo if they wish as their penalty from spending in an uncapped year expires.
Brian Orakpo fined for Week 7 hit on McCown | 10/25/2013 3:22 PM
NewsRedskins OLB Brian Orakpo was fined $15,750 by the NFL for an illegal hit on Josh McCown in Week 7.
ImpactOrakpo unloaded on McCown and went high before driving him into the ground. In 2011, Orakpo was fined $15,000 for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Michael Vick. He's not in danger of an NFL suspension, although SS Brandon Meriweather has been banned for Week 8 for an accumulation of illegal hits. The Redskins aren't just playing bad defense, they're playing dirty defense.
Orakpo being evaluated for head injury | 09/22/2013 1:37 PM
NewsRedskins OLB Brian Orakpo exited Sunday's Week 3 game against the Lions with a head injury but later returned.
ImpactOrakpo has eight tackles and one sack through two games. Veteran Darryl Tapp took the reps opposite Ryan Kerrigan while Orakpo was out.
Orakpo listed day-to-day with thigh injury | 08/16/2013 7:40 PM
NewsRedskins coach Mike Shanahan wouldn't rule out that OLB Brian Orakpo (thigh) could be held out of Monday's preseason game.
ImpactOrakpo suffered a bruised thigh in Thursday's practice, but it's not a major concern. The Redskins will continue to evaluate him on a day-to-day basis.
Brian Orakpo making waves at 'Skins camp | 08/15/2013 11:54 AM
NewsThe Redskins' organization has been buzzing about the camp OLB Brian Orakpo is having.
ImpactPer CBS' Jason La Canfora, Orakpo rarely "had his way" with LT Trent Williams in the past. During this camp, the tables have turned. Orakpo, who is in a contract year and finally fully healthy, is a realistic candidate for double-digit sacks.
Redskins seek extend Brian Orakpo's contract | 07/22/2013 5:56 PM
NewsThe Washington Post reports the Redskins are "intent" on signing OLB Brian Orakpo to a long-term contract "well before" he hits 2014 free agency.
ImpactSmartly -- a description used far more often nowadays in D.C. under the Bruce Allen/Mike Shanahan regime -- the Redskins are trying to lock up Orakpo before his price tag skyrockets. It's shrewd business because Orakpo is coming off a lost season and his value is at a low, whereas it'll be at a high if he dominates in his contract year. It's unclear whether Orakpo is willing to bet on himself. He's been oft-injured in each of the past two seasons.
Brian Orakpo gunning for DPOY in 2013 | 06/07/2013 11:13 AM
NewsRedskins OLB Brian Orakpo is aiming to be Defensive Player of the Year in 2013.
Brian Orakpo looks 'as good as ever' | 05/28/2013 10:31 AM
NewsCoach Mike Shanahan said OLB Brian Orakpo (pectoral) "looks as good as ever."
ImpactOrakpo tore his pectoral in Week 2 last season, landing on injured reserve. He's now 100 percent. "He's had no setback at all," Shanahan said. "He's been going full speed over the last four weeks. He looks as good as ever. Right now, you can tell it's completely healed and we'll keep our fingers crossed that there's no setback." Orakpo has 30 sacks in his first 49 NFL games.
Orakpo: No long-term talks as of yet | 05/06/2013 10:02 AM
NewsGoing into the final year of his rookie contract, Redskins OLB Brian Orakpo says the sides have yet to discuss an extension.
John Keim on Twitter
ImpactThis, after CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reported in February that the Redskins would make "every effort" to lock Orakpo up this offseason. The No. 13 pick of the 2009 draft, Orakpo has been a stalwart pass-rusher, but the Redskins have to be a bit leery of a high-dollar, long-term commitment after Orakpo tore his left pectoral twice in as many years. Orakpo has insisted he's 100 percent after missing all but two games last season, and said he's not having any "aches and pains."
Brian Orakpo says he's fully recovered | 04/13/2013 10:01 AM
NewsRedskins OLB Brian Orakpo says he's "100-percent" recovered from the torn pectoral muscle that cut short his 2012 season.
ImpactOrakpo originally injured his left shoulder/pectoral muscle in the 2011 season finale. He tweaked the injury during the 2012 preseason, then suffered a tear in a different part of the muscle while sacking Rams quarterback Sam Bradford in Week 2. Orakpo graded out as the No. 7 outside linebacker at Pro Football Focus for 2011.
Brian Orakpo optimistic about health | 02/15/2013 11:49 AM
NewsRedskins OLB Brian Orakpo (pectoral) resumed lifting weights before the end of the season, and feels "confident" he'll be healthy "well before" training camp.
ImpactOrakpo has had over four whole months to heal up, and should be 100 percent for camp and the preseason even though he's torn the same muscle twice in the past 14 months. Orakpo is going into the final year of his rookie deal, and CBS' Jason La Canfora expects the Redskins to make "every effort" to sign him long-term. Orakpo has 29.5 sacks in 49 career games.
Redskins to make 'every effort' for Orakpo? | 02/07/2013 4:54 PM
NewsCBS' Jason La Canfora expects the Redskins to make "every effort" to sign OLB Brian Orakpo to a long-term extension this offseason.
ImpactOrakpo is entering the final year of his rookie contract, but is coming off his second pectoral tear in as many seasons. Orakpo's production - 29.5 sacks in 49 career games - warrants an extension, but his health could inspire the Redskins to roll the dice and put off long-term talks for another year. Orakpo's sub-$4 million cap number could be another reason the cap-strapped Redskins delay talks. Orakpo has reason to wait, as well, as any extension agreed to this offseason would surely be of the "team friendly" variety. The Redskins could always use the franchise tag on Orakpo if they fail to lock him up and he returns to form in 2013.
