Chiefs could cut WR Avery before the season | 03/01/2014 5:26 PM
NewsChiefs WR Donnie Avery is a candidate for release.
ImpactAvery posted just a 40/596/2 line in his first year in Kansas City and is owed $1.65 million in 2014. Depending on what the Chiefs do in the draft and free agency, his roster spot could be in jeopardy. A.J. Jenkins is a candidate for snaps opposite Dwayne Bowe and could replace Avery as the No. 2 receiver.
Donnie Avery (concussion) 'improving' | 01/07/2014 7:25 PM
NewsPer KCChiefs.com, Donnie Avery (concussion) is "improving, and completing concussion protocol testing."
Reid Ferrin on Twitter
ImpactIt's the third-known concussion of Avery's pro career, but it sounds like he would have been able to suit up had the Chiefs advanced to the Divisional Round. Signed to a three-year, $8.55 million deal last March, Avery caught 40 passes for 596 yards and two touchdowns his first year in Kansas City. Avery has a long and winding injury history, but has now appeared in all 16 games in back-to-back seasons. Signed for an affordable $1.65 million in 2014, Avery will remain a WR5 for fantasy purposes.

NewsDonnie Avery was forced from Kansas City's Wild Card game against the Colts with a concussion, and will not return.

Donnie Avery has one-catch day versus WSH | 12/08/2013 6:10 PM
NewsDonnie Avery caught one pass for seven yards in Kansas City's Week 14 win over the Redskins.
ImpactAvery was targeted only twice. The low-end WR5 has posted more than 33 yards in just one of his past eight games.
Donnie Avery held to 17 yards in Week 13 | 12/01/2013 8:47 PM
NewsDonnie Avery was limited to two receptions for 17 yards in the Chiefs' Week 13 loss to the Broncos.
ImpactAvery took a backseat as usual fourth receiver Junior Hemingway (3-42-1) played a larger role in the passing game. Avery's 4-91-1 line from Week 12 proved a predictable illusion. Avery isn't worth rostering even in 14-team leagues.
Donnie Avery eats up Michael Cox | 11/24/2013 5:49 PM
NewsDonnie Avery caught four passes for 91 yards with a touchdown in Sunday's Week 12 loss to the Chargers.
ImpactAvery roasted CB Michael Cox so bad that Chargers benched him. That would be impressive if Cox hadn't been benched in two of the previous three games. Once he was going against competent corners, Avery was quiet and finished with just five targets even though Alex Smith put it up 38 times. Don't chase these numbers -- Avery was averaging 2.4 catches for 22.4 yards with no touchdowns over the previous five games.
Donnie Avery held to one catch in Week 11 | 11/18/2013 1:22 AM
NewsDonnie Avery caught one pass for 20 yards in Week 11 against the Broncos.
ImpactHe was targeted three times in the passing game. Avery starts and plays the majority of snaps outside of Dwayne Bowe in two-wide sets, but remains off the fantasy radar. He has just 28 catches, 416 yards, and one touchdown through 10 games.
Avery goes for 22 yards in Week 9 | 11/03/2013 4:47 PM
NewsDonnie Avery caught three passes for 22 yards in the Chiefs' Week 9 win over the Bills.
ImpactAvery is a complementary, role-playing receiver in a wideout-unfriendly offense. He's not worth owning in 12-team fantasy leagues.
Donnie Avery practicing in full this week | 10/30/2013 5:28 PM
NewsDonnie Avery (shoulder) is practicing in full this week.
Adam Teicher on Twitter
ImpactAvery has been battling a shoulder issue for a few weeks now but hasn't missed a game. He hasn't visited the end zone since Week 1 and is merely a WR5.
Avery goes for 31 yards on thee catches | 10/27/2013 5:39 PM
NewsDonnie Avery caught three passes for for 31 yards in Week 8 against the Browns.
ImpactEven with Dwayne Bowe being shadowed by Joe Haden, Avery wasn't featured in the passing game and is behind Dexter McCluster for targets. He's nothing more than a desperation WR5 and can be safely dropped in fantasy leagues.
Donnie Avery has three-catch day vs. Houston | 10/20/2013 8:13 PM
NewsDonnie Avery caught three passes for 33 yards in Kansas City's Week 7 win over the Texans.
ImpactSo it goes on the Avery WR4/5 roller-coaster. Avery shouldn't be relied on as more than a bye-week fill-in.
Donnie Avery loses fumble versus Raiders | 10/13/2013 6:08 PM
NewsDonnie Avery caught two passes for six yards in Kansas City's Week 6 win over the Raiders, also losing a fumble.
ImpactAvery's fumble came inside the Raiders' 10-yard line, and was of the "soft" variety. The inconsistent deep threat is a desperation WR5 for fantasy purposes.
Donnie Avery (shoulder) probable for Week 6 | 10/11/2013 6:13 PM
NewsDonnie Avery (shoulder) is probable for Week 6.
ImpactAvery was upgraded to "full" in Friday's practice after being limited earlier this week. His status was never really in doubt. Avery is not a fantasy option for this week's matchup with the Raiders.
Donnie Avery (shoulder) limited Wednesday | 10/09/2013 6:09 PM
NewsDonnie Avery (shoulder) was limited in Chiefs practice Wednesday.
ImpactAfter last Sunday's win over the Titans, Avery was spotted having difficulty raising his arm. The Chiefs called the injury a "bruised shoulder." Avery is still on track to play against the Raiders but isn't a reliable fantasy option.
Donnie Avery having trouble raising his arm | 10/06/2013 8:47 PM
NewsFollowing Sunday's win at Tennessee, Donnie Avery (shoulder) was spotted having difficulty raising his arm.
ImpactAvery was injured late in the first half and was able to return for only a few plays in the third quarter. The good news is that X-rays came back negative and the Chiefs are calling the injury a "bruised shoulder." Still, Avery is a poor WR3 option when healthy and will be an even weaker one if he suits up at less than 100 percent. The Chiefs face the Raiders in Week 6.
Donnie Avery goes for 91 yards in Week 5 | 10/06/2013 5:24 PM
NewsDonnie Avery caught three balls for 91 yards in the Chiefs' Week 5 win over the Titans.
ImpactHe secured two rare bombs from Alex Smith, the first good for 44 and the second for 41. Avery missed a large chunk of snaps with a shoulder injury, however, and has been wildly inconsistent in the weekly box scores. Consider Avery a poor WR3 option when the Chiefs face the Raiders in Week 6.
Donnie Avery predictably falls back to earth | 09/29/2013 4:47 PM
NewsDonnie Avery caught just two passes for 23 yards in Sunday's Week 4 win over the Giants.
ImpactDespite garnering 10 targets from Alex Smith, Avery predictably crashed back to earth. The difference between last week's fluky 7/141/0 line and this one is that the Giants actually had defenders around Avery on shallow crosses. The Eagles couldn't do that. Avery is on pace for 52 catches, 852 yards and four touchdowns. Don't expect him to come close to finishing with those numbers.
Donnie Avery burns Eagles for 141 yards | 09/20/2013 12:19 AM
NewsDonnie Avery caught seven passes for 141 yards in Kansas City's Week 3 win over the Eagles.
ImpactA deep threat, Avery did his damage not by beating defensive backs deep, but turning short crossing routes into after-the-catch masterpieces against the Eagles' sorry defense. The catches were his most since last Week 2 with the Colts, while the yards were his most since 2008. The evening was all the more impressive considering he was targeted only seven times. Avery had just four catches coming into Week 3, and is still little more than a WR4, at best.
Donnie Avery gets two catches in win | 09/15/2013 5:18 PM
NewsDonnie Avery caught two passes for 38 yards in Sunday's Week 2 win over the Chiefs.
ImpactAvery is the clear-cut second wideout in Kansas City, but his deep speed won't be utilized by Alex Smith. Through two games, Avery has just four catches for 49 yards. All fantasy owners can cut bait.
Donnie Avery reels in touchdown in win | 09/08/2013 5:11 PM
NewsDonnie Avery caught two passes for 11 yards and a touchdown in Kansas City's Week 1 win over the Jaguars.
ImpactAvery saw five targets on the afternoon. His touchdown came from five yards out on a flat route to get the Chiefs on the scoreboard in the first quarter. Avery is not going to be a reliable fantasy option with Alex Smith checking down to his backs and tight ends so often. Treat him as a WR5.
Donnie Avery catches six passes for 54 yds | 08/24/2013 11:12 PM
NewsDonnie Avery caught six passes for 54 yards in Saturday's third preseason game against the Steelers.
ImpactAvery drew a team-high nine targets. Avery has never been an efficient player, but two of his incompletions were Alex Smith's fault. Likely done for the preseason, the deep-threat finishes with seven grabs for 60 yards. Avery will occasionally flash WR3 value as the Chiefs' apparent No. 2 receiver, but his inconsistency and Smith's weak arm make him a low-upside WR5.
Reid: Donnie Avery is 'legitimate starter' | 08/20/2013 3:59 PM
NewsChiefs coach Andy Reid views No. 2 receiver Donnie Avery as a "legitimate starter."
Kansas City Star
ImpactAvery is locked in opposite Dwayne Bowe after the Chiefs flipped Jon Baldwin to the 49ers for A.J. Jenkins. "We felt that when we brought (Avery) here, we felt that since he's been here that he can be a quality starter on our football team." The injury-prone deep threat has had an unimpressive camp, and caught just one pass in two preseason games. Avery's skill-set doesn't alight with the weak-armed Alex Smith's. He's a low-end WR5.
Donnie Avery expected to be Chiefs' No. 2 WR | 08/15/2013 12:15 PM
NewsDonnie Avery is expected to be the Chiefs' No. 2 wideout.
ImpactAvery entered camp behind Jon Baldwin at the "Z" receiver position. But Baldwin, a 2011 first-round pick, is "still learning" and has had a "tough" month. That leaves Avery, who best fits as a situational deep threat, as an every-down receiver. It's more trouble for Andy Reid and the Chiefs as they try to install a pass-heavy offense under Alex Smith. Dwayne Bowe is going to be a target monster.
Avery listed behind Baldwin on depth chart | 08/04/2013 10:18 PM
NewsDonnie Avery is listed behind Jon Baldwin at Z receiver on the Chiefs' initial training camp depth chart.
Kansas City Star
ImpactBaldwin and Dwayne Bowe are the starters, with Avery and Dexter McCluster behind them. Avery was signed to start in the offseason, inking a three-year, $8.55 million deal, but missed the entire spring with a high ankle sprain and has struggled with drops in camp. Don't expect any 2013 fantasy impact from Avery.
Donnie Avery cleared for Chiefs camp | 07/23/2013 6:44 PM
NewsChiefs WR Donnie Avery was medically cleared for the start of training camp.
ImpactSigned to a three-year, $8.55 million deal in free agency, Avery missed all of OTAs with a high ankle sprain. He's fully healthy now, although Avery has a brittle injury history. He's tentatively expected to start opposite Dwayne Bowe.
Avery missed OTAs with high ankle sprain | 06/07/2013 10:13 PM
NewsChiefs WR Donnie Avery missed most of OTAs with a high ankle sprain.
Kansas City Star
ImpactIt's an injury that'll heal before training camp, but explains with Jon Baldwin received more first-team reps than he normally would've. We tentatively expect Jamaal Charles to finish second on the Chiefs in receptions, behind Dwayne Bowe. Avery and Dexter McCluster would be alternative pass-catching options.
Donnie Avery likely to start opposite Bowe | 03/18/2013 3:29 PM
NewsThe Kansas City Star considers Donnie Avery the Chiefs' "likely" starting wide receiver opposite Dwayne Bowe.
Kansas City Star
ImpactThe Star projects Dexter McCluster as Kansas City's slot receiver. The paper does not mention 2011 first-round pick Jon Baldwin among the Chiefs' top three wideouts, which perhaps hints he's not necessarily in new head coach Andy Reid's plans. Avery, coming off a 60/781/3 line in Indianapolis last season, would do well to repeat those numbers in Kansas City. We won't project him to.
Chiefs sign deep threat receiver Donnie Avery | 03/13/2013 12:07 PM
NewsChiefs signed WR Donnie Avery, formerly of the Colts.
Adam Schefter on Twitter
ImpactAvery, 29 in June, recorded 60 receptions for 781 yards and three touchdowns as the starter opposite Reggie Wayne in Indy last year. He was outplayed by rookie T.Y. Hilton and has always struggled with injuries, drops, and a distinct lack of physicality. The Chiefs did want to upgrade their perimeter speed, though, and Avery's sub-4.4 wheels can help in that area. With Dwayne Bowe, Avery, and slot receiver Dexter McCluster in place, we would not be surprised if the Chiefs put Jon Baldwin on the trade block before the draft.
Donnie Avery visiting with Chiefs | 03/13/2013 8:36 AM
NewsFree agent WR Donnie Avery will visit the Chiefs Wednesday.
Jason La Canfora on Twitter
ImpactA straight-line speedster that has proven to be drop-prone, Avery would fill the DeSean Jackson role in Andy Reid's offense. He should come cheaply after posting just 781 yards and three touchdowns despite starting 16 games with Andrew Luck and Bruce Arians last season.
Donnie Avery an option for the Jets at WR? | 03/03/2013 1:35 PM
NewsThe New York Post mentions free agents Donnie Avery and Brian Hartline as options for the Jets.
New York Post
ImpactAvery makes a lot more sense. He'll be cheaper for the cap-strapped Jets, and he's a deep threat that Gang Green lacks at the moment. Plus, Avery is more of a role player. The Jets appear to have a set starting trio at receiver in Santonio Holmes, Jeremy Kerley, and Stephen Hill -- not that it's a good group.
Pep Hamilton talks up FA Donnie Avery | 02/14/2013 11:43 AM
NewsNew OC Pep Hamilton talked up free agent WR Donnie Avery Wednesday.
ImpactHamilton appears to be operating as if the Colts will re-sign Avery despite an inconsistent, drop-plagued 2012 campaign. It's a situation for T.Y. Hilton advocates to monitor closely. Hilton will be a breakout candidate no matter what, but if Avery does return the two could share some of the situational deep threat work.
Donnie Avery has worst catch rate in NFL | 01/23/2013 9:39 AM
NewsDonnie Avery dropped 12 of 72 catchable passes this season, tying teammate T.Y. Hilton for the worst drop rate among NFL wideouts in 2012.
Pro Football Focus
ImpactHilton bungled 20 of the 50 catchable targets that came his way, costing Andrew Luck an even bigger rookie campaign. But while Hilton was a raw rookie that still has a ton of room to grow, Avery was a five-year veteran that has consistently disappointed in previous stops. Even if the impending free agent is back in Indy for next season, we fully expect Hilton to siphon plenty of snaps.
Avery held to 12 yards in playoff loss | 01/06/2013 6:28 PM
NewsDonnie Avery managed just two catches on eight targets for 12 yards and rushed once for 15 yards at Baltimore in the Wild Card round of the playoffs.
ImpactAvery's fourth-quarter drop in the red zone on a critical third down took the wind out of the Colts' sails and aborted their comeback attempt. One of the NFL's least efficient receivers, Avery finished fourth in drops while catching just 53.6 percent of his targets. He was 46th in fantasy points. The Colts could use a more reliable receiver to go along with Reggie Wayne and T.Y. Hilton next season.
