Chapman fires three scoreless innings | 03/11/2014 7:11 PM
NewsAroldis Chapman pitched three perfect innings in the Reds' 8-5 loss to the Giants on Tuesday.
ImpactChapman allowed one hit, walked one, and struck out one. Reds manager Bryan Price said in January that he would like to get more than 60 innings out of Chapman in 2014 -- a feat he has accomplished in each of the last two seasons -- which could mean some multi-inning appearances. Tuesday's outing seems indicative of that plan. Chapman is already a top-tier closer, for fantasy purposes and otherwise, so getting him close to or above 70 innings is just icing on the cake.
Aroldis Chapman fans three against White Sox | 03/07/2014 8:24 PM
NewsAroldis Chapman was touched up for a run on two hits in his two innings of work against the White Sox on Friday, but did manage to rack up three strikeouts in the process.
ImpactThe fire-balling southpaw looks poised to post another elite season out of the Reds bullpen, where his lofty strikeout totals make him a top option in fantasy drafts. He should be one of the first four closers selected in all mixed leagues.
Reds have talked about extending Chapman | 02/16/2014 12:32 PM
NewsReds general manager Walt Jocketty told Jim Duquette on SiriusXM Sunday that the club has talked about extending Aroldis Chapman.
Jim Duquette on Twitter
ImpactHowever, it doesn't sound like negotiations have started yet, as the club is focused on extending Homer Bailey at the moment. "We've talked about extending (Chapman), as well, but one step at at time on him," the GM said. Chapman will make $5 million in 2014 and has a $5 million player option for 2015, but he's not eligible for free agency until after the 2016 season.
Reds and Chapman agree to 1-year, $5MM deal | 01/28/2014 11:21 AM
NewsReds and Aroldis Chapman avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $5 million contract.
Joel Sherman on Twitter
ImpactClub and player sensibly agreed to the midpoint between Cincinnati's $4.6 million offer and Chapman's $5.4 million request. The Cuban southpaw has averaged 67 2/3 innings a season the past two years, and Reds pitching coach Bryan Price said over the weekend that he would like Chapman to surpass 60 innings again in 2014. It goes without saying that more innings equals more strikeouts for the flame-thrower. Chapman will remain an elite fantasy closer in 2014.
Reds want more innings from Aroldis Chapman | 01/26/2014 4:42 PM
NewsReds pitching coach Bryan Price said Sunday that they would like to get more than 60 innings out of closer Aroldis Chapman in 2014.
C. Trent Rosencrans on Twitter
ImpactThe 25-year-old Cuban sensation has averaged 67 2/3 innings a season that past two years, and it sounds like he could be in line for an even bigger workload this coming season. The more innings that the fire-balling southpaw receives, the more opportunity he has to rack up strikeouts which further increases his already elite fantasy value.
Reds, Chapman exchange arbitration numbers | 01/17/2014 7:48 PM
NewsAroldis Chapman requested $5.2 million and was offered $4.6 million from the Reds when arbitration figures were exchanged on Friday.
Jon Heyman on Twitter
ImpactIt's likely that the final figure will be right in the middle at the $5 million mark. The flame-throwing Cuban southpaw will once again rank as one of the truly elite options at closer heading into the 2014 season.
Chapman preparing for next season as closer | 12/07/2013 4:18 PM
NewsAroldis Chapman says he's "tired" of questions about him starting and that he's preparing for next season as a closer.
Impact"I am preparing myself as every offseason, getting myself ready to close," Chapman told the Cincinnati Enquirer. "Starting hasn't even crossed my mind and I'm not going to do it either." He also said nobody with the Reds has approached him about the possibility of starting next year. It echoes what manager Bryan Price and general manager Walt Jocketty have said, so it seems the lefty will remain in the bullpen for the foreseeable future. He'll be a top shelf closer option again in 2014.
Price 'comfortable' with Chapman in bullpen | 12/04/2013 7:35 PM
NewsReds manager Bryan Price said he's "very comfortable" with Aroldis Chapman in the bullpen, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reported.
Impact"I do think we can utilize him more in the bullpen instead a guy that may be a single-inning guy now that he's done this for a few years," Price said. "I think there are ways we can get more value out of Aroldis, not necessarily by starting him but keeping him in the bullpen. There's still a bit more dialogue to have organizationally before we put a stamp on what role he'll have. Right now, I'm very comfortable with where he is." It sounds like Chapman will get his wish to remain the team's closer, and the team may also explore using him for multiple innings next season. Chapman threw more than one inning just twice in 2013.
Price non-committal about Chapman's role | 10/22/2013 3:20 PM
NewsReds manager Bryan Price was non-committal at his introductory press conference Tuesday when asked about whether Aroldis Chapman will be moved to the starting rotation.
C. Trent Rosecrans on Twitter
ImpactPrice has wanted to give Chapman a chance to start in the past, but former manager Dusty Baker felt otherwise. The possibility could be revisited now that Price is in charge, but he played coy when asked about the topic Tuesday, merely saying that he wants to put the best team on the field and a decision will be made down the road. It's worth noting that Chapman prefers closing and the Reds have no obvious successor, but fantasy owners would do well to keep an eye on this situation.
Chapman dominates again, earns fourth victory | 09/08/2013 11:22 PM
NewsAroldis Chapman continued his recent domination of the National League, striking out two in a perfect ninth inning against the Dodgers on Sunday.
ImpactThe flame-throwing lefty needed just 10 pitches to dispatch the Dodgers in this one. He was handed his fourth victory of the season after the Reds scored in the bottom half of the inning. Chapman now owns a 2.62 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and eye-popping 101/24 K/BB ratio in 58 1/3 innings on the season, while converting 35 of his 40 save chances.

Chapman blows save against Brewers | 08/17/2013 12:56 AM
NewsAroldis Chapman blew a save Friday against the Brewers by giving up a walk-off two-run home run to Jonathan Lucroy.
ImpactAfter entering the bottom of the ninth inning with a 6-5 lead, Chapman gave up an infield single to Jean Segura before Lucroy took him deep. It was a stunning defeat for the Reds, who had a chance to move into second place in the NL Central with a victory. The fireballing southpaw has pitched in five out of the last six days, so it will be interesting to see if he's available for a potential save situation Saturday.
Aroldis Chapman notches 27th save | 08/07/2013 3:56 PM
NewsAroldis Chapman pitched a perfect ninth with a one-run lead to pick up his 27th save Wednesday against the A's.

Chapman blows fourth save against Padres | 07/30/2013 2:03 AM
NewsAroldis Chapman blew his fourth save of the season Monday in the Reds' loss to the Padres.
ImpactAfter inheriting a 1-0 lead in the ninth inning, Chapman walked the leadoff batter and served up a walk-off, two-run homer to Chris Denorfia. The Cuban left-hander is still piling on the strikeouts in 2013 (70 over 41 2/3 innings), but he's been uncharacteristically hittable and owns a disappointing 3.02 ERA and 1.18 WHIP.
Chapman earns 23rd save, Reds down Pirates | 07/20/2013 9:26 PM
NewsAroldis Chapman earned his 23rd save of the season Saturday in the Reds' 5-4 win over the Pirates.
ImpactChapman gave up a leadoff single in the top of the ninth inning and then Pedro Alvarez reached on an error by shortstop Zack Cozart. But the flamethrowing Cuban left-hander rallied to retire Russell Martin, Michael McKenry and Jordy Mercer in order -- the last two via strikeout. Chapman has a 2.66 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 68/19 K/BB ratio in 40 2/3 innings this season.
Chapman allows homer in non-save situation | 07/14/2013 7:55 PM
NewsAroldis Chapman allowed a solo homer to Andrelton Simmons in a non-save situation Sunday against the Braves.
ImpactThe Reds were up 8-3 at the time, so no harm no foul. The left-hander went 21-for-24 in save conversions in the first half, posting a 2.79 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 64/19 K/BB rate over 38 2/3 innings.
Chapman earns 20th save, Reds top Rangers | 06/29/2013 11:27 PM
NewsAroldis Chapman earned his 20th save of the year Saturday as the Reds topped the Rangers in 11 innings.
ImpactDevin Mesoraco hit a tie-breaking homer in the top of the 11th and Chapman closed it out in the bottom of that frame. The left-hander seems to be settling back in after a minor road bump. He boasts a 2.65 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 57/17 K/BB ratio in 34 innings this season.
Chapman blows third save of season vs. AZ | 06/22/2013 10:06 PM
NewsAroldis Chapman blew his third save of the season Saturday in the Reds' loss to the Diamondbacks.
ImpactChapman was as bad as he's ever been, yielding a leadoff infield single, two walks and then a walkoff RBI base hit to Jason Kubel. The flame-throwing left-hander still has a cool 2.53 season ERA and should be able to get back on track in his next appearance.
Chapman piling up the strikeouts for Reds | 06/11/2013 4:45 AM
NewsAroldis Chapman has struck out two batters or more in eight of his last nine appearances.
ImpactHe hasn't allowed a run since May 19, 10 outings ago. Chapman is fourth in the NL in saves (16) to go with a 2.25 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 48/12 K/BB rate over 28 innings.

ImpactChapman hasn't been nearly as dominant as he was a season ago, but has still posted a 2.74 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 39/10 K/BB ratio through his first 23 innings. With Sean Marshall on the disabled list and Jonathan Broxton struggling, his job remains extremely secure.
Aroldis Chapman earns ninth save | 05/20/2013 10:50 PM

Chapman blows the save as Reds lose in ninth | 05/19/2013 4:36 PM
NewsAroldis Chapman blew his second straight save chance Sunday in the Reds' loss to the Phillies.
ImpactChapman entered with the Reds leading 2-1 and then gave up back-to-back solo homers to Erik Kratz and Freddy Galvis. The hard-throwing lefty hasn't enjoyed the cleanest May but is obviously still the Cincinnati closer. He'll try to bounce back in the next opportunity that he gets.
Chapman rebounds to record seventh save | 05/04/2013 5:40 PM
NewsAroldis Chapman rebounded nicely from his rough Friday outing, pitching a scoreless ninth inning against the Cubs on Saturday to earn his seventh save of the season.
ImpactChapman walked a batter and failed to record a strikeout, but it was a clean frame. He now holds a 2.40 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 22/6 K/BB ratio through 15 innings this season. The fireballing lefty is a truly elite fantasy option.
Chapman available on Saturday | 05/04/2013 10:46 AM
NewsReds manager Dusty Baker said Aroldis Chapman is available Saturday.
Mark Sheldon on Twitter
ImpactChapman allowed three runs in two-thirds of an inning and was pulled from Friday's game, but he'll be available on back-to-back days if there's a save situation. He had allowed just one run, five hits and three walks in 14 innings to open the season.
Aroldis Chapman gives up three runs in ninth | 05/03/2013 5:59 PM
NewsAfter entering a 6-2 game against the Cubs in the ninth, Aroldis Chapman allowed three runs in two-thirds of an inning and was pulled Friday.
ImpactJ.J. Hoover relieved him with the bases loaded and struck out Darwin Barney to end the game and pick up the save. Chapman allowed four hits -- all of which were singles -- and walked two before coming out of the non-save situation. Maybe it was that four-run lead that threw him off. Prior to today, he had allowed just one run, five hits and three walks in 13 1/3 innings.
Chapman earns first save, Reds beat Angels | 04/04/2013 3:38 PM
NewsAroldis Chapman notched his first save of 2013 in the Reds' 5-4 defeat of the Angels on Thursday afternoon.
ImpactChapman was only handed a one-run lead and was tasked with the top of the Angels' batting order. But he fought past a Mike Trout single to retire Erick Aybar, Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton in order. The flame-throwing left-hander should be an elite closer all year.
It's official: Chapman will be Reds' closer | 03/22/2013 3:44 PM
NewsReds general manager Walt Jocketty and manager Dusty Baker officially announced Friday that Aroldis Chapman will be the team's closer this season.
Mark Sheldon on Twitter
ImpactJocketty also denied that he had been pushing for Chapman to move into the rotation, which has been the common thought. Although it would have been interesting to see what the lefty would have done as a starter, he prefer to close, and it's possible that's the role he's best suited for. Jonathan Broxton will now be used as a setup man, while Mike Leake will be the club's fifth starter.
Jocketty says no decision on Chapman's role | 03/21/2013 12:53 PM
NewsReds GM Walt Jocketty said Thursday that no decision has been made on Aroldis Chapman's role for 2013.
Mark Sheldon on Twitter
ImpactBut it's pretty clear where this thing is headed. Chapman wants to stay at closer and Reds manager Dusty Baker wants the same. Paul Daugherty of the Cincinnati Enquirer heard from sources Thursday morning that the flame-throwing left-hander will ultimately get his wish.
Reds moving Aroldis Chapman back to bullpen | 03/21/2013 10:44 AM
NewsAccording to Paul Daugherty of the Cincinnati Enquirer, Aroldis Chapman will be moved back to the bullpen.
Impact"Barring a significant change of minds," writes Daugherty, "the Reds are expected to announce [Thursday] that Chappy will close." It's what manager Dusty Baker has wanted, and what Chapman himself prefers. The Reds would probably be better off maximizing the left-hander's value in the rotation, but there's some risk that comes with that. Chapman will again be an elite fantasy closer. Jonathan Broxton will be a setup man.
Reds' Chapman: 'I would like to be a closer' | 03/17/2013 11:22 AM
NewsAroldis Chapman said Saturday that he "would like to be a closer."
Impact"Truthfully, I would like to be a closer, but that's not in my hands," Chapman said. Reds manager Dusty Baker would also like the left-hander to be his closer, but general manager Walt Jocketty and others with the Reds would like to try him out in the rotation. Chapman has been stretched out as a starter this spring and holds a 2.25 ERA over eight innings, though that's come with an uninspiring 4/4 K/BB ratio. Baker would like to make a decision on Chapman's role in the next few days.
Aroldis Chapman has good showing Saturday | 03/16/2013 8:18 PM
NewsAroldis Chapman went four innings and allowed one run the Reds 7-6 victory over the Giants Saturday.
ImpactThere is still no decision as to whether the lefty will start the season in the rotation or the bullpen, but Saturday's start speaks well of Chapman's ability to handle a starting role. Chapman, 25, has a 2.25 ERA this spring. As a closer, Chapman is lights out, but his velocity and strikeout ability could play well every fifth day as well. Either way, he's got value -- it's just whether that value will come in the form of wins or saves.
Dusty Baker wants decision on Chapman soon | 03/13/2013 2:30 PM
NewsReds manager Dusty Baker said Wednesday that he wants a decision on Aroldis Chapman's role in the next week or so.
Impact"I'd like to make a decision in the next week or so, so I can get my team together," said Baker. "The decision is not only mine, it's ours. But I got my opinion." Word is that Baker would prefer Chapman in the closer role, but he might not get his way. The southpaw allowed one run on three hits over four innings this spring and will make his next start on Saturday. If the Reds determine that Chapman will stay as closer, Mike Leake would get a rotation spot while Jonathan Broxton would slide back into a set-up role.
Aroldis Chapman gives up solo shot | 03/05/2013 6:57 PM
NewsAroldis Chapman allowed a run on three hits and a walk over two innings in Tuesday's loss to the Angels.
ImpactOne of the hits the southpaw gave up was a solo homer to Howie Kendrick. Chapman's results were better his first time out, but it's silly to read anything into two two-inning stints.
Chapman spins two perfect innings Thursday | 02/28/2013 7:19 PM
NewsAroldis Chapman tossed two perfect innings Thursday against the Rockies in his first Cactus League start.
ImpactThe left-hander struck out one batter. Chapman topped out at 94 mph in the outing and also mixed in all of his offspeed pitches often. The flamethrower is making the move into the Reds' rotation this season and holds immense fantasy appeal if he can keep his control in order.
Reds won't reveal plan in place for Chapman | 02/16/2013 9:00 PM
NewsReds pitching coach Bryan Prce indicated on Saturday that they have a plan in place for how to utilize Aroldis Chapman this season, but that they're keeping the details "on the down low."
ImpactPrice said there is a pretty good understanding of where they will keep his innings limit at this season, after tossing 71 2/3 innings out of the bullpen in 2012. Even if that limit is around 170 innings as speculated, he still offers significant upside in fantasy drafts with his massive strikeout ability.
