|Assets:||Mixes a two-seamer and four-seamer in the low-90's with a strong curveball. Can induce a lot of groundball outs. Boasts terrific command when on top of his game. Is also a bit deceptive.|
|Flaws:||His sinking action doesn't always sink, which leaves him susceptible to the long ball too frequently. His changeup is only an average pitch. Overall, he can be a bit too hittable in the bigs.|
|Career Potential:||Solid veteran starter.|

ImpactMcCarthy (7-10, 4.37 ERA) struck out eight batters and allowed one unearned run on five hits over 5 2/3 innings Monday in a win over the Tigers. With a 3.59 FIP and a 2.89 xFIP this season, he should continue to pitch well.
Yankees starter Brandon McCarthy was dominant Saturday yielding one run on six hits without a walk and nine strikeouts. | 07/19/2014 5:26 PM
NewsYankees starter Brandon McCarthy was dominant Saturday yielding one run on six hits without a walk and nine strikeouts.
ImpactWe have always known he could pitch, but with him its a matter of staying healthy. McCarthy has never made more than 25 starts in any season of his career, but has 20 so far this season.
McCarthy Ks nine in first win with Yankees | 07/19/2014 4:12 PM
NewsBrandon McCarthy struck out nine batters over six innings of one-run ball in a 7-1 win over the Reds on Saturday.
ImpactMaking his home debut in pinstripes, McCarthy was in control all afternoon, scattering six hits while walking none. The only run scored on a solo homer from Chris Heisey in the fifth inning. At the cost of Vidal Nuno, the 31-year-old was a solid addition to patch the injury-riddled rotation in New York, but he's a fringe option in mixed leagues now that he's calling the AL East home.
McCarthy gets no-decision in Yankees debut | 07/10/2014 12:15 AM
NewsBrandon McCarthy, making his Yankees debut, allowed four runs (one earned) over 6 2/3 innings in Wednesday's 5-4, 14-inning win over the Indians.
ImpactMcCarthy joined the Yankees in the trade that sent Vidal Nuno to the D'Backs on Sunday. The right-hander allowed three unearned runs in the first inning and one earned run in the fourth. Overall, he surrendered nine hits, walked one, and struck out three. Combined with his time with the D'Backs, McCarthy is 3-10 with a 4.80 ERA and a 96/21 K/BB ratio. McCarthy will face the Reds at Yankee Stadium following the All-Star break.
Yankees make trade for McCarthy official | 07/06/2014 11:43 AM
NewsYankees acquired RHP Brandon McCarthy and cash from the Diamondbacks in exchange for LHP Vidal Nuno.
ImpactThe Diamondbacks will eat $2.05 million of the roughly $4.8 million remaining on McCarthy's contract, while the Yankees will pick up his $1 million assignment bonus. The tall right-hander holds a 5.01 ERA this season but sports an impressive 93/20 K/BB ratio and has seen a spike in his velocity. His ability to get grounders will help him at Yankee Stadium, though he won't have a very good defense behind him.
Yankees acquire McCarthy from D'Backs | 07/06/2014 11:09 AM
NewsChris Cotillo of MLBDailyDish.com reports that the Yankees have acquired Brandon McCarthy from the Diamondbacks in exchange for Vidal Nuno.
Chris Cotillo on Twitter
ImpactFOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal and CBS Sports' Jon Heyman are also saying that the trade is done. ESPN's Buster Olney reports that the D'Backs are also sending cash to the Yankees in the deal. Although he's 3-10 with a 5.01 ERA, McCarthy has upped his velocity this season and boasts a nice 93/20 K/BB ratio. Yankee Stadium obviously isn't an ideal landing spot, but he should be an upgrade over Nuno.
McCarthy wins third game, second in a row | 07/03/2014 10:38 PM
NewsBrandon McCarthy improved to 3-10, allowing two runs over 5 2/3 innings as the D'Backs easily defeated the Pirates by a 10-2 margin on Thursday.
ImpactMcCarthy didn't have the benefit of much run support, as the D'Backs scored seven in the ninth. They did, however, kindly take the lead in the top of the sixth. McCarthy allowed eight hits and walked two while striking out six, earning his second consecutive win. Now with a 5.01 ERA, a 1.38 WHIP, and a 93/20 K/BB ratio, McCarthy will look to further improve his trade value in next week's start against the Marlins at home.
Brandon McCarthy earns win over Padres | 06/28/2014 1:05 AM
NewsBrandon McCarthy limited the Padres to one run in seven innings Friday to improve to 2-10 on the season.
ImpactOnly against the Padres. The Diamondbacks are 3-0 this year when McCarthy faces San Diego and 0-14 when he faces anyone else. Since the beginning of last year, McCarthy has a 4-1 record versus the Padres and a 3-20 record against everyone else. We don't want it to sound like we're trashing McCarthy; he certainly deserves a better record than his current mark. Still, it is fortunate that he has gotten to pitch against the Padres once a month.
Brandon McCarthy gives up five runs in loss | 06/22/2014 1:46 AM
NewsBrandon McCarthy was tagged for five runs in five innings Saturday in a loss to the Giants.
ImpactMcCarthy fell to 1-10 on the season. While his peripherals have generally been quite good even while he's racked up the losses, he gave up 10 hits and struck out just two in this one. A change of scenery would probably do him some good and might materialize at some point in the next few weeks.
Brandon McCarthy strikes out nine in loss | 06/07/2014 1:13 AM
NewsBrandon McCarthy fell to 1-8 after allowing three runs in 6 1/3 innings and striking out nine against the Braves on Friday.
ImpactNo help for McCarthy has been a running theme this year; this makes eight times in his 13 starts that the Diamondbacks have scored two runs or fewer. We still like the way he's throwing; he has 72 strikeouts in 79 innings this year, nearly matching his totals of 76 in 135 innings in 2013 and 73 in 111 innings in 2012.
Brandon McCarthy gives up five runs in loss | 06/01/2014 1:24 AM
NewsBrandon McCarthy surrendered five runs in 4 1/3 innings Saturday in a loss to the Reds.
ImpactThere's been no average for McCarthy lately; in his last six starts, he's allowed one or no runs three times and five or more runs three times. We still like the increased velocity, but pitching for a bad team in an offense-heavy ballpark isn't working out very well for him.
McCarthy struggles vs. Padres in no-decision | 05/26/2014 11:25 PM
NewsBrandon McCarthy allowed five runs on nine hits over 6 2/3 innings in Mondays's no-decision versus the Padres.
ImpactMcCarthy struck out four, walked none, and gave up a pair of homers. Yonder Alonso's solo homer led off a rough fifth inning, and Everth Cabrera's three-run long fly put an exclamation mark on it. McCarthy yielded just two runs over 14 innings in his last two outings, giving a smattering of owners hope that he'd be an NL-only contributor, but owners will have to content themselves in his solid peripherals alone for now. The right-hander, 1-6 with a 4.87 ERA and 1.26 WHIP, hosts Cincinnati over the weekend.
McCarthy goes six strong in no-decision | 05/22/2014 12:20 AM
NewsBrandon McCarthy tossed six innings of one-run ball in a no-decision Wednesday versus the Cardinals.
ImpactMcCarthy got no runs of support while he was in the game and the Cardinals eventually won in extra innings. The right-hander has been excellent in two straight starts against tough-hitting teams and will try to keep it rolling next week when he faces the Padres at home.
Brandon McCarthy goes eight stromg | 05/14/2014 6:58 PM
NewsBrandon McCarthy held the Nationals to one run over eight innings and struck out seven in a no-decision Wednesday.
ImpactMcCarthy had one ugly, ugly inning last week against the White Sox, but apart from that, he's been dominant the last couple of weeks. With his velocity up, he can remain a useful mixed-league pitcher.
Brandon McCarthy gets torched in fourth | 05/10/2014 12:54 AM
NewsBrandon McCarthy was lit up for seven runs in 3 1/3 innings Friday in a loss to the White Sox.
ImpactMcCarthy retired nine straight to start the game, but things unraveled totally and terribly in the fourth. Four straight hits started the inning and five more followed after McCarthy got his lone out by fanning Adam Dunn. Mixed into the latter group was a grand slam from Alexei Ramirez. We still like the way that McCarthy is throwing right now, but after things started going badly tonight, he just didn't have an answer.
Brandon McCarthy goes seven scoreless | 05/04/2014 12:08 AM
NewsBrandon McCarthy shut out the Padres for seven innings, allowing just three hits, to win Saturday for the first time this season.
ImpactHe was facing the game's worst offense, but McCarthy still would have fared well against a quality lineup with the way he was throwing tonight. His velocity has been up all year long, and his ERA will continue to shrink if he stays healthy. He has some mixed-league value right now.
McCarthy strikes out 12 but takes loss Sunday | 04/27/2014 8:06 PM
NewsBrandon McCarthy allowed two runs over seven innings, striking out 12, in a loss to the Phillies on Sunday.
ImpactThe start was easily McCarthy's best of the young season, but he still took his fifth loss for his efforts. The right-hander gave up seven hits and a walk in the start. His 12 strikeouts was a career high for a single game, as his previous career-best mark was 10. Hopefully trending upward, McCarthy will continue to look for his first win Saturday at the Padres.
McCarthy takes 4th loss vs. Cubs on Tuesday | 04/22/2014 11:29 PM
NewsBrandon McCarthy allowed five runs -- one earned -- on seven hits over five innings in Tuesday's loss to the Cubs.
ImpactMcCarthy looked as though he was going to get out of the fifth inning unharmed, but a fielding error by Martin Prado gave the Cubs an extra out. They used to put up four runs, with the big damage coming on a Mike Olt three-run homer. It's hard to give McCarthy too much of the benefit of the doubt, though, as the loss dropped him to 0-4 with a 6.23 ERA. The Phillies get to face the struggling right-hander on Sunday.
McCarthy allows three runs in loss to Mets | 04/16/2014 6:55 PM
NewsBrandon McCarthy allowed three runs on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings in a loss to the Mets on Wednesday.
ImpactAt least McCarthy kept the opposition under five runs this time. The right-hander is now 0-3 with a 7.11 ERA and 1.42 WHIP through four starts, an extension of his team's struggles to start the year. Maybe his fortune will turn Tuesday when the Diamondbacks visit the Cubs.
Brandon McCarthy gives up six runs in loss | 04/05/2014 11:32 PM
NewsBrandon McCarthy gave up six runs in six innings against the Rockies to take a loss on Saturday
ImpactWith 11 earned runs in 12 2/3 innings so far, McCarthy's 2014 has started exactly like his 2013. He gave up 12 runs -- 10 earned -- in 11 2/3 innings in his first two start of last year on his way to going 0-3 with a 7.48 ERA in April. Next up for him is the Dodgers, so he's not a great play in NL-only leagues.
McCarthy gives up five runs to Giants | 04/01/2014 9:27 AM
NewsBrandon McCarthy yielded five runs in 6 2/3 innings in a no-decision against the Giants on Opening Day.
ImpactMcCarthy pitched better than the line indicated, but he came unglued near the end and the bullpen did more damage. The veteran right-hander allowed six hits while striking out four and walking one. While we saw more velocity than normal on Monday, it's tough to rely on McCarthy as anything more than a matchup pitcher in mixed fantasy leagues.
McCarthy notches quality start vs. Cubs | 03/26/2014 6:39 PM
NewsBrandon McCarthy recorded a quality start in Wednesday's start against the Cubs, allowing three runs in six innings.
ImpactMcCarthy allowed six hits and walked one while striking out six. His Cactus League ERA sits at a solid 2.70 with 12 strikeouts and three walks in 20 innings. McCarthy will oppose Madison Bumgarner of the Giants in the D'Backs' home opener.
Brandon McCarthy solid in third spring start | 03/08/2014 10:09 PM
NewsBrandon McCarthy pitched well in his third Cactus League start on Saturday, allowing two runs on six hits over five innings against the White Sox.
ImpactThe 30-year-old right-hander fanned two without walking a batter on the afternoon. McCarthy now owns a 1.93 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 6/2 K/BB ratio over 11 innings this spring. His lack of strikeouts keep his fantasy value down, making him a decent option as a backend starter of streaming option that can be had cheaply near the end of drafts.
McCarthy dazzles with five scoreless frames | 03/03/2014 5:39 PM
NewsBrandon McCarthy held the Angels scoreless over five innings on Monday.
ImpactMcCarthy is starting the spring off on the right foot, having held the Dodgers to one run in four innings his last time out. On Monday afternoon, he allowed three hits and a walk while striking out two. The right-hander struggled at times last season after coming to Arizona from the Athletics. If he can progress with his ground ball and strikeout rates, he may be a rebound candidate.
Brandon McCarthy tosses four strong frames | 02/26/2014 5:33 PM
NewsDiamondbacks starter Brandon McCarthy held the Dodgers to one run on four hits and a walk in four innings of work Wednesday.
ImpactIt was certainly a good start to Cactus League action for McCarthy. He was able to use ground balls to his advantage while striking out two. If he can secure a spot at the back of Arizona's rotation, he will attempt to reach the 30-start plateau for the first time in his career.
McCarthy finishes season strong in loss | 09/28/2013 10:48 PM
NewsBrandon McCarthy finished his season strong in Saturday's loss to the Nationals, allowing just two runs on five his over seven innings.
ImpactMcCarthy walked a pair and struck out one on the night. He was engaged in a scoreless duel with Dan Haren until Ryan Zimmerman plated a run with an RBI groundout in the sixth inning, then Chad Tracy tacked on a solo homer in the seventh. The 30-year-old right-hander finishes the season with a disappointing 5-11 record, 4.53 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 76/21 K/BB ratio over 135 innings. Perhaps the most important thing to take away from this season is that he's finally fully healthy, and could be poised for a nice bounceback effort in 2014.
SP McCarthy yields 4 runs over 6 innings | 09/24/2013 1:17 AM
NewsBrandon McCarthy coughed up four runs on eight hits over six innings in a loss to the Padres on Monday.
ImpactThe right-hander struck out two and didn't walk anyone. McCarthy has only walked one batter over his last six starts, and he has gone at least six frames in each of those outings. McCarthy will take a 5-10 record and 4.64 ERA into his last start of the season on Saturday against the Nationals.
SP McCarthy yields three runs on 10 hits | 09/19/2013 1:49 AM
NewsBrandon McCarthy surrendered three runs on 10 hits over six innings in a victory against the Dodgers on Wednesday.
ImpactHe struck out three and walked zero. McCarthy has notched three consecutive quality starts. The right-hander has yielded two runs or less in five of nine starts since he was activated from the disabled list on August 4, though he obviously came up a little short this evening. McCarthy will take a 5-9 record and 4.57 ERA into his next start on Monday in San Diego.
McCarthy yields 2 runs over 6 innings | 09/14/2013 1:26 AM
NewsBrandon McCarthy yielded two runs on 11 hits over six innings in a no-decision against the Rockies on Friday.
ImpactHe struck out two and didn't walk a batter. McCarthy averaged eight innings a pop over his last three starts, but was yanked two innings earlier at 89 pitches this evening. He'll take a 4-9 record and 4.58 ERA into next week's start against the Dodgers.
Brandon McCarthy loses despite CG | 09/02/2013 7:30 PM
NewsBrandon McCarthy went the distance but took a loss against the Blue Jays Monday, allowing four runs over nine innings.
ImpactHe surrendered five hits, didn't walk anyone and struck out four. McCarthy allowed two runs in the second but was cruising along until the ninth, when Edwin Encarnacion padded the lead with a two-run shot. The righty threw only 93 pitches in the outing. He'll take a 4.94 ERA into San Francisco this weekend.
McCarthy shelled for 7 runs in loss to Reds | 08/22/2013 12:02 AM
NewsBrandon McCarthy allowed seven runs in 2 1/3 innings against the Reds on Wednesday.
ImpactMcCarthy has been a mixed bag since coming off the disabled list in early August, and Wednesday was his worst start of the bunch. He gave up eight hits and a walk, striking out just two, and the Reds got to him for runs in each of the three innings he pitched in. He'll try to get back on track against the Padres on Monday.
McCarthy allows 2 runs over 4 1/3 innings | 08/04/2013 5:39 PM
NewsIn his return to the rotation, Brandon McCarthy allowed two runs over 4 1/3 innings in a loss to Boston on Sunday.
ImpactMcCarthy gave up five hits, striking out five and walking three. He was doomed for an early afternoon after hurling 27 pitches in the first inning, but we were encouraged by the movement of his secondary stuff after a long layoff. The right-hander had been on the shelf since late May due to a chronic shoulder issue. He falls to 2-5 with a 4.94 ERA.
Brandon McCarthy activated from disabled list | 08/04/2013 11:24 AM

Jack Magruder on Twitter
ImpactMcCarthy also walked one and struck out three on the night. All of the damage against him came on a two-run homer off the bat of Carlos Peguero. The most encouraging sign of the night was that he threw 62 of his 85 pitches for strikes. It's not yet known if he'll require another rehab start before rejoining the D'Backs rotation.

ImpactIt was supposed to be a mound workout, but McCarthy experienced some fatigue in his right shoulder after throwing a bullpen session last week and has backed off a bit from his original rehab plan. The hope is he'll be ready to return to Arizona's rotation around mid-July.

ImpactIt was the first time he's thrown from the mound since being placed on the disabled list. It's not clear when the Diamondbacks will send McCarthy on a rehab assignment, but he's on track to be activated at some point early next month.

NewsBrandon McCarthy (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session on Tuesday.
Jack Magruder on Twitter
ImpactIt will be his first since a nagging shoulder injury sent him to the disabled list in late May. McCarthy was cleared to throw from the bump after long-tossing from 105 on Monday with no issues. It's not clear when he might be ready for a rehab assignment, but a return early next month seems likely.

ImpactIt's not clear what the next step is, but McCarthy figures to need a few more long-toss sessions before trying to throw from a mound. He'll also surely need at least a couple rehab starts, making it unlikely that he'll be activated before the end of the month.

Impact"His shoulder feels good," Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said. McCarthy figures to need a handful of flat-ground sessions before progressing to the mound. It would probably be a stretch to think he could return before the end of the month.
Brandon McCarthy is fine after having seizure | 06/09/2013 9:02 AM
NewsBrandon McCarthy (shoulder) is feeling fine after suffering a seizure last week.
ImpactHe and his wife, Amanda, were in a restaurant when he suffered the seizure and was sent to the hospital. McCarthy was told after his brain surgery last season that he might be prone to seizures, but it was the first he had experienced since the operation. It's a scary incident, but the good news is that he's expected to be fine after being prescribed anti-seizure medication. As far as McCarthy's shoulder goes, he's hoping to resume throwing within the next few days.
McCarthy's MRI confirms initial diagnosis | 06/05/2013 9:09 AM
NewsBrandon McCarthy (shoulder) underwent an MRI on Tuesday that ruled out structural damage.
Nick Piecoro on Twitter
ImpactMcCarthy is only dealing with shoulder inflammation and managed to avoid a more serious setback. He still hasn't been given a clear timetable to return, but Tyler Skaggs figures to make at least 2-3 starts in his place. It's the same injury that has sidelined each of the last four seasons, so the Diamondbacks will move him along slowly.
Brandon McCarthy to undergo MRI Monday | 06/02/2013 8:31 AM
NewsBrandon McCarthy will undergo an MRI on Monday to determine if he has a stress fracture in his right shoulder.
ImpactIt's the injury that McCarthy has had in each of the previous four seasons. McCarthy has missed 4-5 weeks in the past due to the ailment, but he's hoping he can return a little sooner this time since he didn't try to push through the injury. Either way, Tyler Skaggs figures to make at least 2-3 starts in his place.
McCarthy placed on DL with shoulder issues | 06/01/2013 3:39 PM
NewsDiamondbacks placed RHP Brandon McCarthy on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 31, with a shoulder injury.
ImpactFOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal was the first to report that McCarthy would be placed on the DL. The full extent of the injury isn't yet known, but the Diamondbacks should provide an update on his status soon. McCarthy allowed six runs on nine hits and was pulled after three innings in his start Thursday against the Rangers. Randall Delgado has been called up to take his spot on the active roster.

Brandon McCarthy holds down Padres in win | 05/25/2013 12:35 AM
NewsBrandon McCarthy limited the Padres to one run in seven innings Friday to win his second straight start.
ImpactMcCarthy has allowed just the one run over 24 innings in his last three starts, lowering his ERA from 6.75 to 4.36. His schedule will start getting more difficult again next week, with the Rangers and Cardinals next in line for him.
McCarthy twirls gem, D'Backs beat Fish 1-0 | 05/18/2013 9:57 PM
NewsBrandon McCarthy threw a three-hit shutout as the Diamondbacks beat the Marlins 1-0 on Saturday.
ImpactEverybody looks a little better facing the Marlins, but it's the second-straight outing that McCarthy has held the opponent scoreless and he's now turned in three consecutive quality starts. After his early struggles, McCarthy seems to have turned a corner. We look for him to be more consistent going forward. His next turn will come against the Padres on Friday.
McCarthy remains winless after blown save | 05/12/2013 8:46 PM
NewsBrandon McCarthy threw eight scoreless innings Sunday in a no-decision against the Phillies.
ImpactIt was McCarthy's best start to date, but he still wasn't able to get the win thanks to a blown save by Heath Bell. The Diamondbacks made a questionable decision not to let him go for the complete game, as he was removed after just 88 pitches. McCarthy has now put together back-to-back quality starts and is starting to look more like the pitcher he was in 2012. He has 5.63 ERA and 1.54 WHIP through his first eight starts.
Brandon McCarthy gives up two homers | 05/02/2013 1:37 AM
NewsBrandon McCarthy surrendered four runs over six innings Wednesday in a no-decision against the Giants.
ImpactPar for the course for McCarthy this year. What was odd about his rough April (0-3, 7.48 ERA) was that he was so poor while surrendering just three homers in his five starts. Tonight he was a more traditional kind of bad, giving up long balls to Angel Pagan and Hunter Pence. The home run ball figured to be more of a problem for him in Arizona than it was in Oakland; so far, he's given up three homers at Chase, one in Colorado and another in Yankee Stadium.
Brandon McCarthy gives up six runs in loss | 04/27/2013 1:13 AM
NewsBrandon McCarthy dropped to 0-3 after giving up six runs in six innings Friday against the Rockies.
ImpactMcCarthy struck out seven tonight after fanning a total of 11 batters in his first four starts. So that would seem to be a good sign. Still, he gave up nine more hits, bringing his total to 45 allowed in 27 2/3 innings on the season. He simply has to get better if he stays healthy.
Brandon McCarthy's early struggles continue | 04/21/2013 8:17 PM
NewsBrandon McCarthy escaped with a no-decision after giving up four runs on eight hits over six innings Sunday against the Rockies.
ImpactMcCarthy was bailed out by late-game heroics from Gerardo Parra and Alfredo Marte. It's been a rough start to the season for McCarthy, who now owns a 7.06 ERA and 1.85 WHIP. He'll look to get back on track Friday in a rematch with the Rockies.
McCarthy struggles again as Diamondbacks fall | 04/16/2013 10:37 PM
NewsBrandon McCarthy exited after allowing nine hits and four walks in four innings against the Yankees on Tuesday.
ImpactIt's the third straight subpar start for the right-hander, who now owns a 7.47 ERA and 2.04 WHIP on the year. He's a better real-life pitcher than fantasy pitcher, and when he's struggling like this it makes him virtually unusable. His next start, Sunday in Colorado, doesn't bode much better.
Brandon McCarthy takes loss to Pirates | 04/10/2013 12:57 AM
NewsBrandon McCarthy surrendered six runs -- four earned -- in 6 2/3 innings Tuesday in a loss to the Pirates.
ImpactFive of the runs came in the fourth, an inning that started on a Jason Kubel error. Obviously, McCarthy's Diamondbacks tenure hasn't opened as hoped -- he's 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA -- but there's no reason to be down on him yet.
Brandon McCarthy gives up six runs | 04/04/2013 2:42 AM
NewsBrandon McCarthy was tagged for six runs and nine hits in five-plus innings by the Cardinals in his Diamondbacks debut Wednesday.
ImpactMcCarthy threw 59 of his 73 pitches for strikes, a remarkable percentage. He might have been better off missing off the corner a few more times. McCarthy struck out just one batter on the night. Of course, he didn't walk anyone, though he did plunk Matt Holliday. He hurt his cause in the third when he threw away Jon Jay's comebacker, but since it was ruled a single and an error, it didn't result in any unearned runs.
Brandon McCarthy goes six strong | 03/20/2013 6:38 PM
NewsBrandon McCarthy allowed 10 hits but held the White Sox to two runs over six innings Wednesday.
ImpactThe lanky right-hander issued one walk and struck out three. McCarthy sports a 5.00 ERA this spring, but he has a 19/3 K/BB ratio over 18 innings and, more importantly, hasn't had any shoulder issues. He'll be a solid fantasy option if he can stay off the DL.
McCarthy strikes out six against former team | 03/15/2013 8:42 PM
NewsBrandon McCarthy turned in a solid performance against his former squad on Friday, racking up six strikeouts while allowing two runs on three hits over his four frames.
ImpactWhile the 6.00 spring ERA certainly looks troublesome at first glance, McCarthy has posted a terrific 16/2 K/BB ratio over his 12 innings of work. Despite his injury risk, and the fact that he'll pitch half of his games at Chase Field, McCarthy looks like a nice value play that can be scooped up in the middle rounds of fantasy drafts.
Brandon McCarthy terrific on Monday | 03/04/2013 7:58 PM
NewsBrandon McCarthy allowed one run while striking out five over three innings in Monday's win over the Reds.
ImpactMcCarthy didn't walk anyone, with the lone damage against him coming in the form of a Zack Cozart solo homer. The right-hander has now given up two runs while striking out nine over five innings in his two spring outings.
Brandon McCarthy strikes out four over 2 IP | 02/27/2013 7:39 PM
NewsBrandon McCarthy allowed one run while striking four over two innings in Wednesday's loss to the Reds.
ImpactHe gave up three hits and didn't walk anyone. The Diamondbacks' bullpen had a meltdown in the middle innings, but it was a solid first outing for McCarthy. The tall right-hander's head injury that prematurely ended his 2012 season isn't really a worry heading into 2013, but his wonky shoulder remains a concern.
Brandon McCarthy (head) throws to hitters | 02/19/2013 12:04 PM
NewsBrandon McCarthy threw to hitters Monday for the first time since he fractured his skull when he was hit in the head by a line drive last September.
Impact"It honestly is completely normal," said McCarthy, who threw behind a protective screen like most of his other teammates. "Anything you would have thought might have been there wasn't. I was more nervous about where my command was at, where my stuff was at." Coming off a quality 3.29 ERA in 43 starts over the past two seasons, McCarthy landed a two-year, $15.5 million contract with the Diamondbacks over the winter. Considering his past shoulder issues and the move to a tougher home ballpark, he could be overvalued in fantasy drafts this spring.
