Cody Allen nails down 12th save | 07/13/2014 4:28 PM
NewsCody Allen struck out two over a perfect inning to record his 12th save of the season in Sunday's win over the White Sox.
ImpactAllen preserved the one-run lead with ease, getting a groundout and a pair of swinging strikeouts to seal the victory. Indians manager Terry Francona has still refused to officially name Allen his closer, but no other Tribe reliever has recorded a save in nearly a month.
Allen strikes out side for 11th save | 07/11/2014 10:37 PM
NewsCody Allen struck out the side in the ninth inning Friday against the White Sox for his 11th save of the season.
ImpactA pretty good day for Cleveland, all in all. With the victory, the Indians are now back to an even .500 at 46-46 on the year. Allen is 11-for-12 in save chances this season and owns a dominant 2.21 ERA and 53/16 K/BB ratio over 40 2/3 innings of work.
Allen makes short work of Yanks for 10th save | 07/08/2014 10:15 PM
NewsCody Allen worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to grab his 10th save as the Indians emerged victorious over the Yankees on Tuesday.
ImpactAllen faced three lefties -- Brian McCann, Brian Roberts, and Ichiro Suzuki -- but had no issues finishing out the ballgame, recording two strikeouts in the process. Allen has done great work since taking the closer's role away from John Axford, as he is now 10-for-11 in save chances with a 2.33 ERA, a 1.09 WHIP, and a 49/15 K/BB ratio in 38 2/3 innings this season.
Cody Allen earns save No. 9 Sunday | 07/06/2014 4:29 PM
NewsCody Allen retired the final two batters of the game to record his ninth save of the season in Sunday's win over the Royals.
ImpactCorey Kluber started the ninth inning looking for a complete game, but Indians manager Terry Francona turned to Allen with a runner on second and one out. The hard-thrower got Raul Ibanez to ground out and Danny Valencia to fly out to end it. Allen has been unscored upon in his last 10 appearances.
Allen collects save as Indians rally vs. LAD | 07/02/2014 6:57 PM
NewsCody Allen earned his eighth save of the season Wednesday in the Indians' 5-4 defeat of the Dodgers.
ImpactAllen recorded the final four outs of the game, protecting a lead that Cleveland captured in the top of the eighth inning. It was his first save since June 14, but that has more to do with the Indians' overall struggles. Allen, 25, owns a cool 2.50 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, and 46/14 K/BB ratio in 36 frames this season for the Tribe.
Cody Allen earns save, Tribe defeat Red Sox | 06/14/2014 7:46 PM
NewsCody Allen collected his seventh save of the season in the Indians' 3-2 win over the Red Sox on Saturday.
ImpactAllen struck out two of the three batters he faced in a perfect bottom of the ninth at Fenway Park. The 25-year-old right-hander looks poised to run away with Cleveland's closer gig, though manager Terry Francona won't quite commit to anything in that regard at the moment. Bryan Shaw earned a hold Saturday and John Axford got the win.
Allen strikes out two, saves win over Rangers | 06/08/2014 8:11 PM
NewsCody Allen struck out two in a perfect ninth inning to preserve the Indians' 3-2 win over the Rangers on Sunday.
ImpactAllen has never been officially named the closer by Indians manager Terry Francona -- in fact, Francona recently said he'd like to get John Axford back in the ninth inning eventually -- but he's saved five straight games and done it in convincing fashion. The right-hander now has six saves on the year to go with a 2.70 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 33/11 K/BB ratio in 26 2/3 innings. Eventually isn't now, and right now Allen is the closer to own in Cleveland.
Allen gets four outs to pick up his 5th save | 06/03/2014 10:50 PM
NewsCody Allen got all four batters he faced out to pick up his fifth save in Tuesday's win over the Red Sox.
ImpactAllen got the final out of the eighth, leaving Jonathan Herrera stranded at first base. He then worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning, ending the game with a strikeout of Grady Sizemore. Allen has recorded four saves in each of his last four outings, and has a 2.81 ERA with a 31/11 K/BB ratio in 25 2/3 innings overall.
Cody Allen earns third save in four days | 06/02/2014 9:55 PM
NewsCody Allen notched his third save in four days Monday with a scoreless ninth against the Red Sox.
ImpactAllen save came after Bryan Shaw gave up two runs in the eighth. Allen's struggles in the middle of May didn't take a toll on his stock in the Indians pen, and now with Shaw struggling, Allen seems like a better bet than ever. As for John Axford, it seems Terry Francona has totally lost faith in him -- he hasn't pitched in six days -- even though he's been putting up zeroes of late.
Allen collects save as Indians beat Rockies | 05/31/2014 6:52 PM
NewsCody Allen collected his third save of the season Saturday as the Indians defeated the Rockies.
ImpactAllen worked around a walk in his hitless ninth inning. He's now tallied saves in back-to-back games for the Indians, who are still playing with different looks at closer. Allen, Bryan Shaw, and John Axford are all worth rostering right now in deep mixed fantasy leagues.
Allen notches second save of season | 05/30/2014 10:44 PM
NewsCody Allen tossed a perfect ninth inning Friday against the Rockies for his second save of the season.
ImpactAllen struck out two batters in the inning. The 25-year-old clearly has the stuff to pitch the ninth inning, but the Indians appear hesitant to give him an extended opportunity. At least right now. Bryan Shaw and John Axford still stand in his way.
Cody Allen, Bryan Shaw allow runs in loss | 05/28/2014 11:09 PM
NewsCody Allen and Bryan Shaw both gave up runs as the Indians lost a 3-2 game on to the White Sox on Wednesday.
ImpactAllen gave up the go-ahead run in the eighth, walking two in the frame. After the Indians tied it back up in the ninth, Shaw gave up the winning run in the bottom of the frame, though that inning started with a Mike Aviles error and the run was unearned. Given that Allen is scuffling some and John Axford is pitching better, it wouldn't be a surprise to see the Indians go back to Axford in the closer's role soon.
Cody Allen blows save in ninth | 05/19/2014 11:46 PM
NewsGiven the ball in a one-run game in the ninth, Cody Allen allowed a game-tying homer to J.D. Martinez to take a blown save Monday.
ImpactAllen also had a lousy outing Sunday, though the outcome in the loss to the A's had already been decided by the time he came in. Allen had his ERA down to 1.69 before that, but it's up to 3.71 now. It seems like good news for Bryan Shaw, who pitched a scoreless eighth tonight for a hold. Both remain candidates for saves, but Shaw seems like the better bet to get the next opportunity.
Cody Allen saves the day aganst Rays Friday | 05/09/2014 11:35 PM
NewsCody Allen was called upon to clean up John Axford's mess in the ninth inning on Friday, securing his first save of the season in the process.
ImpactAxford is no stranger to trouble in the ninth inning, and tasked with protecting a four-run advantage he allowed a pair of hits and two walks in his 2/3 of an inning, allowing a run to score and putting the tying runs on base. Allen was summoned to face James Loney, and after a nine-pitch battle retired him on a fly ball to right field. It remains to be seen if this will have any impact on the closer's job in Cleveland, but Allen should be owned in all mixed leagues until things become clear.
Allen strikes out the side against D'Backs | 03/11/2014 6:58 PM
NewsCody Allen got all three outs on strikeouts in his inning against the D'Backs on Tuesday.
ImpactAllen did allow a run on two hits and a walk, sullying the feat somewhat. Coming off of an impressive 2013 season in which he finished with a 2.43 ERA and 88 strikeouts in 70 1/3 innings, Allen will be setting up for closer John Axford. Unless Axford struggles, Allen isn't likely to run into many save opportunities, which makes him appealing only in leagues that use holds.
Cody Allen could emerge as Indians closer | 11/09/2013 10:14 AM
NewsPaul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer expects the Indians to look internally to fill their void at closer, with Cody Allen and Bryan Shaw the top candidates.
Cleveland Plain Dealer
ImpactHoynes notes that the Tribe is unlikely to be in the market for an established closer through free agency. The 24-year-old Allen was extremely effective in 2013, registering a 6-1 record, 2.43 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 88/26 K/BB ratio in 70 1/3 innings. Vinnie Pestano could also be an internal candidate to fill that role, though he's coming off a highly disappointing campaign.
Cody Allen notches second save for Indians | 07/12/2013 10:29 PM
NewsFilling in for Chris Perez who was unavailable, Cody Allen picked up his second save of the season in Friday's win over the Royals.
ImpactIt certainly wasn't smooth sailing, as he allowed a pair of singles and a walk to load the bases before eventually fanning Jarrod Dyson to end the game. The young right-hander has compiled a 2.27 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 52/13 K/BB ratio over 39 2/3 innings.
Allen earns second hold in loss to Boston | 05/27/2013 2:28 AM
NewsCody Allen allowed a run but earned his second hold Sunday in Cleveland's loss to Boston.
ImpactCleveland's closer of the future didn't struggle nearly as much as the Indians' current closer, Chris Perez, who was pulverized for four runs over 2/3 of an inning. Allen (2.31 ERA, 0.99 WHIP), the second fastest player in the 2011 draft class to reach the majors, will continue to operate in middle relief this year, but could have ninth-inning duties locked up as soon as next season.
Cody Allen converts first career save | 05/12/2013 5:32 PM
NewsWith Chris Perez unavailable, Cody Allen nailed down his first career save by striking out the only batter he faced in Sunday's win over the Tigers.
ImpactIndians manager Terry Francona decided to give Perez some rest since he threw 22 pitches the previous night. After southpaw Rich Hill retired the first two batters in the 10th, Allen came on to strike out Matt Tuiasosopo to end it. Vinnie Pestano is on the DL and Joe Smith had already pitched, so Allen is still probably, at best, fourth in line for saves in Cleveland.
Cody Allen to make Indians Opening Day pen | 03/15/2013 9:51 PM
NewsCody Allen has been told by Indians manager Terry Francona that he has secured a spot in the team's Opening Day bullpen.
Nick Camino on Twitter
ImpactThe 24-year-old appeared in 27 games with the Indians in 2012, posting a 3.72 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 27/15 K/BB ratio over 29 innings. Despite his struggles this spring, Francona assured him last week that he had the spot locked up. He's unlikely to pitch in many high-leverage situations however, making him worthless in most fantasy formats.
