Mariners catcher Mike Zunino went 3-for-4 with a solo homer Sunday against the Orioles. | 07/27/2014 7:38 PM
NewsMariners catcher Mike Zunino went 3-for-4 with a solo homer Sunday against the Orioles.
ImpactZunino has hit 15 homers this season, but he's batting just .209 with 37 RBI, 36 runs and a .677 OPS. Catcher is a weak fantasy position, but you can probably do better.
Mariners catcher Mike Zunino is not in Saturday afternoon's starting lineup. | 07/26/2014 1:29 PM
NewsMariners catcher Mike Zunino is not in Saturday afternoon's starting lineup.
ImpactJust a routine day off after a night game. Zunino isn't batting for a high average (.202), but has knocked out 14 homers with 36 RBI this season.
Zunino goes 1-for-3 with a homer in win | 07/08/2014 12:51 AM
NewsMike Zunino homered in Monday's victory over the Twins.
ImpactIt was his only hit of the game. Zunino's second inning solo shot off Twins' starter Kevin Correia gave the Mariners a 1-0 lead that it held until the end. He almost sliced a ball over the opposite-field wall in the fourth, but Oswaldo Arcia reeled in the would-be second round-tripper. Zunino entered the game batting just .071 with no walks in July. The young catcher is slashing .217/.271/.435 and is on pace for 24 homers and 62 RBI.
Mike Zunino fans three times | 06/29/2014 12:58 AM
NewsMike Zunino struck out all three times he was up Saturday against the Indians.
ImpactZunino hit four homers in five games from June 20-25, but even so, he's hitting .216 with six RBI and a ridiculous 35/1 K/BB ratio in 79 at-bats this month. There's no doubting his power and he's been decent enough defensively to justify his presence in the lineup, but his approach leaves a whole lot to be desired.
Zunino goes 2-for-4 with single, homer in win | 06/25/2014 1:52 AM
NewsMike Zunino singled and homered in Tuesday's victory over the Red Sox.
ImpactThe white-hot Zunino has belted two doubles and three homers during his current five-game hitting streak (though he only has three RBI in that stretch). Prior to this prosperous run, Zunino hadn't homered since May 28. He's upped his slash line to .230/.289/.438 and is on pace for an encouraging 21 homers.
Zunino hits game-winning homer to down Royals | 06/22/2014 6:11 PM
NewsMike Zunino hit a game-winning home run and scored both Mariners runs in their 2-1 win over the Royals on Sunday.
ImpactZunino finished 2-for-4, also adding a double in the fifth inning. But it was his solo home run in the seventh, his second straight game with a homer, that made the difference. Zunino now has nine homers but a pedestrian .704 OPS, and he's an AL-only option only at this point.
Zunino paces Seattle's offense in 3-1 victory | 05/29/2014 1:04 AM
NewsMike Zunino collected all three RBI in Wednesday's 3-1 triumph over the Angels.
ImpactZunino rapped a two-run single to right off C.J. Wilson to give Seattle a 2-0 lead in the second, and he afforded his team an insurance run by connecting for a leadoff solo homer off Wilson in the eighth. The 23-year-old has good fantasy potential, but owners will have to be patient, as he'd gone 0-for-8 in the previous two games to drop his average to .230. Zunino sports an ugly .284 OBP, but he's on pace for 22 homers and 65 RBI.
Zunino bumped to fifth spot in M's lineup | 05/26/2014 2:41 PM
NewsMike Zunino has been bumped up to the fifth spot in the Mariners' lineup on Thursday.
Greg Johns on Twitter
ImpactThe 23-year-old backstop is slugging .450 with six home runs and 18 RBI in 38 games this season. "I think he's real close to being an All-Star type of catcher," manager Lloyd McClendon said Monday afternoon.
Zunino clubs sixth homer as M's sink Rays | 05/13/2014 1:52 AM
NewsMike Zunino walked twice and corked a homer Monday versus the Rays.
ImpactNot a bad day's work for the young backstop, who has had exactly one hit in five straight games, two of them round-trippers. Fantasy owners might want to argue with the .255 average or .296 OBP, but Zunino's .491 slugging percentage will paralyze most tongues. That ranks third behind Matt Weiters and Buster Posey for the MLB's best catcher mark.
Zunino hits two-run homer vs. Astros | 05/03/2014 12:50 AM
NewsMike Zunino connected for a two-run homer Friday against the Astros.
ImpactZunino now has four home runs, 13 RBI and a .494 slugging percentage through 22 games. While the 23-year-old has been a nice surprise from a fantasy perspective, he hasn't showed any hint of plate discipline. He has a 27/1 K/BB ratio and a .294 on-base percentage.
Mike Zunino rips four hits in Mariners' win | 04/29/2014 11:34 PM
NewsMike Zunino went 4-for-5 with a run scored and RBI in Tuesday's win over the Yankees.
ImpactAll the hits were singles, but it was still obviously a nice night for the Mariners' backstop. The four base knocks were a career high for Zunino, who entered the game hitless in his previous four games. He's now batting .274/.299/.479 for the season.
Mike Zunino hits third home run | 04/14/2014 11:58 PM
NewsMike Zunino went 2-for-4 and hit his third homer Monday against the Rangers.
ImpactWith Justin Smoak and Corey Hart stumbling, maybe the Mariners will give Zunino a look in the cleanup spot sometime soon. They need a right-hander there, since they have left-handers batting second and third and often fifth and sixth as well. Zunino doesn't project to be any better than Smoak or Hart, but he's outplaying them so far with his .282 average and eight RBI from the bottom of the order.
Mike Zunino homers in victory | 04/12/2014 1:35 AM
NewsMike Zunino went 2-for-4 and hit a two-run homer against the A's on Friday.
ImpactZunino's homer to left knocked Tommy Milone from the game in the sixth. He can certainly give the ball a ride when he makes contact, but he currently has a 10/0 K/BB ratio in 32 at-bats. He is batting .281, but that is a far higher average than we'd expect from him over the course of the year.
Zunino clubs first homer of season in victory | 04/03/2014 1:05 AM
NewsMike Zunino went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer in Wednesday's 8-2 victory over the Angels.
ImpactZunino started in two of Seattle's three victories over the Angels in the season-opening sweep, ceding Tuesday duties to veteran backup John Buck. Like the rest of his teammates, Zunino feasted off a generous buffet of helpless Angels pitching (his Opening Day highlight was poking his first career triple). Owners that invested in Zunino last year are probably still salty, but they should think about easing up on the sodium and move on: The 23-year-old slashed just .176/.256/.311 in 23 games after he fractured a hamate bone in his left hand in late July. This is a solid No. 2 fantasy catcher with No. 1 upside.
Zunino doubles twice against the Dodgers | 03/04/2014 5:49 PM
NewsMike Zunino went 2-for-2 with two doubles and a run scored in Tuesday's 4-1 victory over the Dodgers.
ImpactZunino recently made some adjustments to his batting stance and is now hitting .571 on the spring. He wasn't anything to write home about with the bat last season, but hit well in the minors. Zunino, soon to be 23, could be a pleasant surprise in Seattle this season.
Mike Zunino looks to improve at the plate | 02/16/2014 4:16 PM
NewsMariners catcher Mike Zunino has already made a few adjustments to his batting stance this spring, and is looking to be a much bigger contributor on offense in 2014.
ImpactThe 22-year-old backstop is looking to get back to the swing that gave him success in the minor leagues, which he strayed away from a bit after being rushed to the big leagues around mid-season in 2013. He slashed .214/.290/.329 with five homers and 14 RBI in 52 games as a rookie.
Zunino blasts two homers in Wednesday's win | 09/26/2013 1:05 AM
NewsMike Zunino launched a pair of solo homers in Wednesday's 6-0 victory over the Royals.
ImpactHe finished 2-for-4. Zunino, 22, hasn't excelled offensively this season, but his potential was on full display this evening. The rookie backstop is slashing .215/.295/.337 with five homers and 14 RBI over 49 games.
Zunino homers in loss to Cardinals | 09/14/2013 12:12 AM
NewsMike Zunino went 2-for-4 with a solo homer in Friday's extra-inning loss to the Cardinals.
ImpactIt was the only offense of the evening for the Mariners. The 22-year-old entered Friday's action just 4-for-29 (.138) with zero extra-base hits since coming off the disabled list. While it was a good night from an offensive perspective, Zunino allowed the winning run to score in the bottom of the 10th inning because of a passed ball.

NewsMike Zunino (hand) impressed manager Eric Wedge in his first batting practice session Saturday.
Impact"His batting practice yesterday was without hesitation," Wedge told reporters on Sunday "He looked great ... I think he's on the path." The young catcher has been out since late July with a fractured hamate bone. He's expected to rejoin the M's in early-to-mid September.

Mike Zunino expected to return in September | 08/23/2013 8:13 PM
NewsMike Zunino (hand) is on schedule in his recovery from a broken hamate bone and is expected to return to the Mariners at some point in September.
Greg Johns on Twitter
ImpactThe rookie backstop was hitting .242/.315/.343 with two homers and 10 RBI in his first 29 games before sustaining the injury. If he can indeed make it back, it's fair to assume he'd assume the bulk of the catching duties the remainder of the season.
Mike Zunino (hand) taking swings off a tee | 08/16/2013 6:24 PM
NewsMike Zunino (hand) has progressed to taking swings off of a tee for the first time since undergoing surgery in late July to remove the broken hamate bone from his left wrist.
Shannon Drayer on Twitter
ImpactThere's still no projected timetable for his return, and with the Mariners out of playoff contention there is no reason to rush their young backstop back into action. He may return near the end of September, but fantasy owners shouldn't wait around hoping that he'll contribute anything the remainder of the season.
Zunino (hand) ran wind sprints on Sunday | 08/12/2013 10:13 AM
NewsMike Zunino (hand) ran wind sprints on Sunday.
ImpactBut the talented young catcher has yet to be cleared for baseball activities and might not play in another game this season. Zunino underwent surgery to remove the broken hamate bone from his left wrist in late July.
Zunino lands on DL with fractured hamate bone | 07/26/2013 5:38 PM
NewsMariners placed C Mike Zunino on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured hamate bone in his left hand.
ImpactBrutal news for the rookie backstop. Zunino suffered the injury when he was hit in the hand by a foul tip on Thursday. He'll undergo surgery and is expected to miss around six weeks, which could put him at risk for missing the rest of the season. The Mariners will add another catcher to the roster prior to Friday's game, but they figure to look outside the organization for help in the coming days.
Mike Zunino exits after taking foul tip | 07/25/2013 11:55 PM
NewsMike Zunino left Thursday's game against the Twins after the fourth inning after taking a foul tip off his left hand.

Mike Zunino hits second home run | 07/23/2013 1:13 AM
NewsMike Zunino went 2-for-3 and hit his second big-league homer Monday off the Indians' Ubaldo Jimenez.
ImpactZunino is having better at-bats of late. He turned in his first three-hit game on July 12 and then he walked three times in the first game after the All-Star break. He's still not ready to hit for average in the majors, but the power numbers will get better.
Mike Zunino goes 3-for-4 against Angels | 07/13/2013 1:20 AM
NewsMike Zunino turned in his first three-hit game Friday against the Angels.
ImpactOne of the hits was a double. After 81 at-bats, Zunino is hitting .235 with one homer and six RBI. His K/BB ratio is 19/3, which is about what should have been expected given his minor league numbers. The power will come, but it's going to be a while before he's a quality fantasy catcher.
Mike Zunino delivers game-winner for Mariners | 06/29/2013 2:11 AM
NewsMike Zunino delivered the game-winning hit in the 10th as the Mariners beat the Cubs 5-4 on Friday.
ImpactZunino singled up the middle with the bases loaded to end the game. It was his second hit in five at-bats, and it raised his average to .237. It was also just his second RBI in 38 at-bats for the Mariners. Zunino has plenty of talent and should be a quality fantasy catcher in time, but right now, he's a fringe No. 2 catcher in mixed leagues.

NewsMike Zunino is not in the Mariners' starting lineup on Saturday evening against the A's.

Mike Zunino hits first homer against A's | 06/15/2013 1:12 AM
NewsMike Zunino hit his first major league homer Friday off a Tommy Milone changeup.
ImpactIt was a solo shot. Given that OBPs of the guys ahead of Zunino in the Seattle lineup, it may well be the case that most of his homers are solo shots. Still, it's a nice beginning for him. He's 2-for-7 after two games.

NewsMike Zunino is batting sixth Wednesday in his MLB debut.
Greg Johns on Twitter
ImpactZunino was officially promoted to the majors on Tuesday but did not make an appearance in the Mariners' 4-0 defeat of the Astros. The third overall pick in last year's draft, he carries major upside and could be a solid fantasy commodity out of the gate in two-catcher leagues.
