NewsTrevor Rosenthal delivered a perfect ninth inning Friday against the Dodgers for his 29th save of the season.
ImpactRosenthal struck out two batters in the frame and has successfully converted each of his last three save opportunities. The hard-throwing right-hander has now gone back-to-back outings with a walk. He hasn't done that since late May.
Rosenthal converts 28th save of season | 07/12/2014 12:35 AM
NewsTrevor Rosenthal delivered a scoreless ninth inning Friday against the Brewers to convert his 28th save of the season.
ImpactRosenthal struck out two batters in the inning and worked around a leadoff single from Aramis Ramirez to finish off the victory. It hasn't always been pretty for the 24-year-old this season -- he has walked 26 batters in 43 2/3 innings to go along with a 1.37 WHIP -- but he's tied with Atlanta's Craig Kimbrel for the MLB lead with 28 saves.
Trevor Rosenthal works scoreless ninth | 07/09/2014 11:53 PM
NewsTrevor Rosenthal pitched a scoreless ninth against the Pirates for his 27th save on Wednesday.
ImpactRosenthal got some help from Peter Bourjos, who made a nice jumping catch at the wall in center to rob Russell Martin of at least an RBI double and end the game. Rosenthal has pitched back-to-back scoreless innings since blowing a save Saturday. He's hardly been a shutdown closer this year, but with 27 saves in 31 chances, he's gotten the job done.
Rosenthal blows fourth save in loss to MIA | 07/05/2014 5:52 PM
NewsTrevor Rosenthal blew his fourth save of the season Saturday in the Cardinals' loss to the Marlins.
ImpactRosenthal allowed two earned runs in the ninth inning Friday before converting his 26th save and was shaky again on Saturday, yielding a one-out single to Donovan Solano and then a game-tying RBI double to Casey McGehee. The game could have ended on a perfect throw home to nab Solano, but Yadier Molina dropped the ball on the tag. Rosenthal has been inconsistent throughout the 2014 season but his job is probably safe.
Rosenthal escapes to notch 26th save | 07/04/2014 11:03 PM
NewsTrevor Rosenthal bended but didn't break en route to his 26th save of the season Friday against the Marlins.
ImpactRosenthal was handed a 3-0 lead to begin the top of the ninth inning, but he quickly loaded the bases with two hits and a hit-by pitch before giving up an RBI single to Christian Yelich. He bounced back to strike out Ed Lucas swinging, but then walked Giancarlo Stanton to force in another run. However, he was able to get Casey McGehee to ground into a double play to escape disaster. It wasn't easy Friday, but Rosenthal has successfully converted each of his last 10 save opportunities.
Rosenthal earns 25th save versus, StL tops SF | 07/03/2014 1:21 AM
NewsTrevor Rosenthal notched his 25th save of the season on Wednesday, pitching a scoreless ninth inning against the Giants.
ImpactRosenthal's task of protecting a 2-0 took a precarious first step as Hunter Pence reached on an infield single, but the 24-year-old bullet dispenser calmly set down the next three batters, all the while declining to allow a ball to escape the infield. He began the year on a shaky note, but hasn't coughed up a run since June 3 to deflate his ERA to 2.97.
Rosenthal earns 22nd save with scoreless 9th | 06/22/2014 8:08 PM
NewsTrevor Rosenthal earned his 22nd save of the season on Sunday, pitching a scoreless ninth inning against the Phillies.

Rosenthal records final out for 20th save | 06/15/2014 5:35 PM
NewsTrevor Rosenthal was called on to record the last out of the Cardinals' win over the Nationals on Sunday.
ImpactThe Cardinals led 5-1 when Rosenthal entered with two men on base. He proceeded to allow a single and walked Adam LaRoche to make things interesting, but he got Jayson Werth to pop out to end the threat. After notching three saves in three days, the right-hander is now second in the National League with 20 saves.
Trevor Rosenthal collects 19th save of season | 06/14/2014 10:12 PM
NewsTrevor Rosenthal collected his 19th save of 2014 in the Cardinals' win over the Nationals on Saturday.
ImpactRosenthal issued a leadoff walk to Ryan Zimmerman but pitched around the danger to protect a three-run lead for St. Louis. The hard-throwing right-hander has been sharper in recent weeks and has the ability to be a top-tier fantasy closer the rest of the way.
Rosenthal Ks three for 18th save of season | 06/13/2014 10:59 PM
NewsTrevor Rosenthal tossed a scoreless ninth inning against the Nationals on Friday for his 18th save of the season.
ImpactRosenthal notched three strikeouts in the inning and worried around a two-out error by Kolten Wong. The young fireballer hasn't been as dominant as expected this season, but he has allowed just one run over his last 11 appearances, lowering his ERA from 4.76 to 3.69 in the process.
Rosenthal gets four-out save in win over Rays | 06/10/2014 10:13 PM
NewsTrevor Rosenthal worked out of an eighth inning jam and worked a scoreless ninth to record a four-out save against the Rays on Tuesday.
ImpactRosenthal was called on to get the final out of the eighth with two runners on, and after hitting Jerry Sands he got Matt Joyce to pop out. He recorded two strikeouts in the ninth, including getting Kevin Kiermaier to end the game, for his 17th save of the year. His numbers are slowly coming back down after a rough start, as he's now got a 3.82 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 39/17 K/BB ratio in 30 2/3 innings of work.
Rosenthal throws perfect inning for 16th save | 05/31/2014 6:34 PM
NewsTrevor Rosenthal threw a perfect ninth inning to earn his 16th save on Saturday afternoon against the Giants.
ImpactRosenthal struck out all three batters he faced in vintage fireballing form. He's had some struggles this season, but the 24-year-old right-hander is among the league leader in saves and should remain a top fantasy closer.
Rosenthal earns 15th save, Cards top Reds | 05/24/2014 10:46 PM
NewsTrevor Rosenthal grabbed his 15th save of the season in the Cardinals' 6-3 win over the Reds on Saturday.
ImpactRosenthal was called upon after Jason Motte allowed a Ryan Ludwick leadoff solo homer in the bottom of the ninth inning and then issued a two-out walk Skip Schumaker. Rosenthal gave up an infield single to Billy Hamilton but struck out Todd Frazier to end it. The Cardinals closer still hasn't found his typical 98-99 mph velocity, but he's tied for second in the majors with his 15 saves.
Rosenthal works a perfect 9th for 14th save | 05/22/2014 10:05 PM
NewsTrevor Rosenthal pitched a perfect ninth inning to pick up his 14th save in Thursday's win over the Diamondbacks.
ImpactStress-free innings have been few and far between for the right-hander this season, but he has back-to-back perfect ninths in the Cardinals' series against the D'Backs. Rosenthal struck out two in the effort, bumping his K/BB ratio up to 30/14 in 23 2/3 innings, but he still has a 4.56 ERA.
Trevor Rosenthal suffers second blown save | 05/18/2014 5:58 PM
NewsWorking on a fourth straight day, Trevor Rosenthal blew his second save of the season when he walked in a run in Sunday's loss to the Braves.
ImpactRosenthal got a strikeout and a popout following a leadoff single. However, Ryan Doumit then laced a first-pitch double before Cardinals manager Mike Matheny curiously ordered an intentional walk of Evan Gattis to load the bases. Rosenthal wound up walking Jordan Schafer on a borderline 3-2 pitch to force in a run, at which point the closer was pulled. Carlos Martinez then proceeded to throw a wild pitch to let the go-ahead runner score. Rosenthal threw a whopping 97 pitches over a six-day period, so the Cards would be wise to rest him for at least an additional day after Monday's off day.
Rosenthal sets down Braves for 13th save | 05/17/2014 4:56 PM
NewsTrevor Rosenthal set down the Braves in order on Saturday, preserving a three-run advantage to earn his 13th save of the season.
ImpactHe has now successfully converted 13 of his first 14 save chances on the season. While his 4.29 ERA and 1.29 WHIP are higher than fantasy owners would like, as long as he continues to get save chances by the bushel the ratios can be overlooked.
Rosenthal slams door on Braves for 12th save | 05/16/2014 11:25 PM
NewsTrevor Rosenthal had an easy time handling the Braves in the ninth inning to pick up his 12th save on Friday.
ImpactRosenthal picked up two strikeouts in a perfect ninth. His 12 saves are now tied for third-best in the National League. However, Rosenthal has hardly been lights out as he still owns a 4.50 ERA and a 24/12 K/BB ratio in 20 innings. He has had three scoreless outings and three scored-upon outings in the month of May.
Trevor Rosenthal gets five-out save | 05/15/2014 5:20 PM
NewsTrevor Rosenthal rebounded from his first blown save of the season by getting five outs Thursday for a save against the Cubs.
ImpactRosenthal came into a 5-2 game with the bases loaded in the eighth and gave up a sac fly and a walk before escaping the jam. He then pitched a perfect ninth, striking out Ryan Kalish to end it. Despite his early woes, he's 11-for-12 saving games this season.
Rosenthal suffers 1st blown save against Cubs | 05/14/2014 1:17 AM
NewsTrevor Rosenthal suffered his first blown save of the year against the Cubs on Tuesday, allowing a run in one inning of work.
ImpactRosenthal got an out before allowing a Junior Lake single and a walk to Darwin Barney, who's hitting .176 on the season. He followed with a strikeout of Chris Coghlan, but Emilio Bonifacio dropped a single in front of right fielder Joey Butler to tie the game at 3-3. The outing itself wasn't particularly alarming, but it's the continuation of a trend that's concerning for Rosenthal owners -- after Tuesday's appearance, Rosenthal has a 5.19 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 21/11 K/BB ratio in 17 1/3 innings. Tuesday may have been his first official blown save, but the 23-year-old has been playing with fire all season. It's not likely to be the last time he gets burned if something doesn't change.
Trevor Rosenthal barely escapes with save | 05/11/2014 11:56 PM
NewsTrevor Rosenthal got himself into a world of trouble against the Pirates on Sunday and barely escaped with his 10th save of the season.
ImpactRosenthal came on with a two-run advantage, and promptly allowed three straight hits to score a run, then walked Clint Barmes on four pitches to load the bases with no one out. He battled back though, getting Ike Davis on a foul pop out, and inducing a game-ending double play from Jordy Mercer. He's now successfully converted each of his first 10 save chances on the season, though his 4.96 ERA and 1.41 WHIP remain troubling.
Trevor Rosenthal slams door on Cubs in ninth | 05/04/2014 11:32 PM
NewsTrevor Rosenthal made it a bumpy ride, but managed to slam the door on the Cubs in the ninth inning on Sunday, escaping with a one-run victory.
ImpactRosenthal issued a one-out walk to Emilio Bonifacio who took second base on defensive indifference and scampered home on a double by Luis Valbuena. He was able to bear down though and get Anthony Rizzo to end the night, preserving his eighth save of the season. He still owns a disappointing 5.04 ERA and 1.19 WHIP through 14 1/3 innings on the year.
Rosenthal notches seventh save Friday | 04/26/2014 12:36 AM
NewsTrevor Rosenthal struck out the side for his seventh save of the season Friday against the Pirates.
ImpactRosenthal has been a little shaky recently, so this outing was nice to see. The young fireballer is 7-for-7 in save opportunities thus far, but he has allowed seven runs on seven hits and six walks over 11 1/3 innings. We still think he's in line for a big year.
Rosenthal earns sixth save, Cards top Mets | 04/22/2014 9:59 PM
NewsTrevor Rosenthal earned his sixth save of the season Tuesday in the Cardinals' 3-0 win over the Mets.
ImpactIt was another shaky outing from the Cardinals' young closer, who issued back-to-back walks to Eric Young Jr. and Curtis Granderson with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning before rallying to retire David Wright on a called third strike and Daniel Murphy on a fielder's choice groundout. Rosenthal has been displaying better velocity of late, so hopefully he can get over the hump soon and return to dominance.
Rosenthal locks down fifth save of season | 04/19/2014 4:09 PM
NewsTrevor Rosenthal persevered through a shaky ninth inning Saturday against the Nationals to lock down his fifth save of the season.
ImpactAfter entering the bottom of the ninth inning with a two-run lead, Rosenthal got Nate McLouth to pop out to first base for the first out. However, he then walked Zach Walters before he was hit with a comebacker and made a late throw to second base while trying to force the lead runner. Making matters worse, he then balked to move both runners into scoring position. While the Nationals cut the lead to one run with a ground out by Kevin Frandsen, Rosenthal struck out Jayson Werth swinging with a 99 mph fastball to end it. Things have been bumpier than expected for Rosenthal in the early going, giving up seven runs in 9 1/3 innings, but he still has a chance to emerge as a top fantasy closer this year.
Rosenthal earns fourth save, Cards top Cubs | 04/13/2014 6:17 PM
NewsTrevor Rosenthal earned his fourth save of the season Sunday in the Cardinals' defeat of the Cubs.
ImpactRosenthal wasn't flashing his typical high-90s velocity -- it was more 94-96 mph -- and the Cubs were able to get to him for a run on two hits. But he entered the game with a three-run lead and was able to preserve the Cardinals' seventh victory of the young season. There's no reason to worry yet about Rosenthal. Some hard-throwers struggle to light up the radar gone in April.
Trevor Rosenthal takes loss against Cubs | 04/12/2014 1:03 AM
NewsTrevor Rosenthal took the loss Friday after giving up a go-ahead three run homer to Welington Castillo.
ImpactAfter pitching a scoreless top of the 10th inning, Rosenthal was curiously left in to hit with two outs and the winning run on second base in the bottom of the frame. He struck out looking in the at-bat and gave up the go-ahead blast to Castillo in the 11th. Not Mike Matheny's finest hour. Rosenthal's ERA isn't pretty at the moment, but we still expect him to be one of the game's top closers this year.

NewsA day after allowing two runs, Trevor Rosenthal rebounded to earn his third save in a win over the Reds on Tuesday.
ImpactRosenthal showed no ill effects of his 27-pitch inning in Monday's win, as he worked around a Brayan Pena single en route to his third save. The hard-throwing right-hander struck out two in his inning of work. He'll likely get Wednesday off after working two straight days.
Rosenthal wild in non-save situation | 04/07/2014 8:41 PM
NewsTrevor Rosenthal struggled in a non-save situation versus the Reds Monday, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks over an inning of work.
ImpactRosenthal was lacking fastball command and appeared to be having trouble with the mound after a rainy day in St. Louis. He allowed the first four batters to reach before retiring the next three to close out the win. Rosenthal hadn't allowed any baserunners in his previous two appearances.
Trevor Rosenthal converts four-out save | 04/03/2014 8:23 PM
NewsTrevor Rosenthal struck out one as he recorded a four-out save in perfect fashion Thursday against the Reds.
ImpactRosenthal was asked to come in in the eighth inning to face Brandon Phillips with Billy Hamilton on first base. He got Phillips swinging before going through the heart of the order in the ninth, needing just 12 pitches to dispose of four hitters. Rosenthal will be among the best closers in the game this season.
Trevor Rosenthal shuts door in ninth | 03/31/2014 8:11 PM
NewsTrevor Rosenthal struck out two in a perfect ninth inning in Monday's win over the Reds.
ImpactRosenthal was facing the bottom of the order, but it probably wouldn't have mattered who he was going up against given how his stuff looked. The 23-year-old hummed fastballs in the upper-90s and dropped nasty changeups in the upper-80s to retire the Reds in order. He should be an elite fantasy closer this season.
Trevor Rosenthal makes spring debut | 03/08/2014 5:11 PM
NewsTrevor Rosenthal pitched a hitless inning in his spring debut Saturday against the Nationals.
ImpactRosenthal missed the last week and a half with a right groin injury. The Cardinals had no reason to rush him back from the injury, since it happened so early on in the spring.

"If it was during the season, I feel like it would be something not worth stopping [for]," Rosenthal said. "With the situation being now, I just thought I would say something. I felt it once, so I said something as soon as I could." Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak added that the closer is considered "day-to-day."

NewsTrevor Rosenthal pitched a perfect ninth in a three-run game for his third save in three days Wednesday.

ImpactRosenthal had only allowed four runs since the beginning of August entering the day. Monday's implosion spiked his ERA from 2.21 to 2.70. The 23-year-old from Lee's Summit, Missouri boasts a 2.63 ERA and 1.17 WHIP over 54 2/3 innings. NewsTrevor Rosenthal said that he's "still trying to get comfortable" with his location and off-speed pitches.
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
ImpactRosenthal has allowed 13 hits in 9 2/3 innings this season, so the Cardinals don't trust him in save situations right now. With just Edward Mujica ahead of him, Rosenthal has a good chance to win the job eventually. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch notes that 11 of the 12 fastballs Rosenthal threw in his last appearance reached 99 mph or faster. He's hit 100 mph several times.

NewsTrevor Rosenthal didn't attend a starting pitchers' meeting on Thursday.
ImpactIt's worth noting that fifth-starter candidates Joe Kelly and Shelby Miller were present at the meeting while some of the club's minor league starters also attended. This would seem to indicate that the Cardinals prefer to keep Rosenthal in the bullpen. It shouldn't come as a major surprise at this point, as the young right-hander hasn't been given the opportunity to start since the first game of the Grapefruit League schedule.
Trevor Rosenthal goes two scoreless | 03/06/2013 4:53 PM
NewsTrevor Rosenthal pitched two scoreless innings out of the pen Wednesday against the Marlins.
ImpactIt's notable that Rosenthal was penciled in for just two innings today after throwing three innings last week. While Rosenthal was always a big long shot for a spot in the Cardinals rotation, the workload roll back could be an indication that he's more likely to start off in the major league pen than in the Triple-A rotation.
Trevor Rosenthal solid for three innings | 02/28/2013 6:02 PM
NewsTrevor Rosenthal bounced back from a poor first outing to yield one run over three innings Thursday against the Marlins.
ImpactRosenthal allowed two hits, walked one and struck out one. While today's performance was definitely an improvement over his first (4 ER, 5 H in 2 IP), he hasn't taken advantage of Shelby Miller's absence from the rotation competition.
Trevor Rosenthal gives up four runs in start | 02/23/2013 5:59 PM
NewsTrevor Rosenthal gave up four runs and five hits in two innings Saturday in his start versus the Marlins.
ImpactRosenthal appeared well on his way to establishing himself as a force out of the pen last October, but the Cardinals have decided to give him another crack at starting games this spring. He has a great deal of upside in either role, but if he's going to help the Cardinals early this season, it figures to happen as a reliever.
