Cards lock up Carpenter for six years, $52M | 03/08/2014 9:24 AM
NewsCardinals signed INF Matt Carpenter to a six-year, $52 million contract extension.
Jon Heyman on Twitter
ImpactDerrick Goold of the St. Louis Post Dispatch reported Friday that the team was close to the deal, and confirmed the two sides reached an agreement early Saturday. It's a nice reward for the 28-year-old who's coming off a brilliant 2013 season in which he slashed .318/.392/.481 with 11 homers, 78 RBI, and a league-high 126 runs scored. He'll be shifting to third base full-time in 2014 to make room for Kolten Wong at second.
Cards agree to extension with Matt Carpenter | 03/08/2014 9:09 AM
NewsDerrick Goold of the St. Louis Post Dispatch reports that the Cardinals have reached an agreement with Matt Carpenter on a multi-year contract extension.
Derrick Goold on Twitter
ImpactThe team has called a 10:00 AM press conference on Saturday to announce the signing. The deal is believed to be a six-year pact in the range of $51-$55 million. The deal effectively buys out the first two years of free agency for the 28-year-old infielder.
Cards, Carpenter 'finalizing' six-year deal | 03/07/2014 8:32 AM
NewsDerrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the Cardinals are "close to finalizing" a six-year extension with Matt Carpenter worth $51-55 million.
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
ImpactGoold says the contract "could be finalized and announced this weekend." Carpenter isn't eligible for arbitration until after this season, so the six-year deal would buy out his first two years of free agency. The fact that the infielder is 28 makes the extension a little risky, but as long as he stays healthy it should wind up being a good deal for the Cardinals.
Cards, Matt Carpenter nearing six-year deal | 03/06/2014 12:44 PM
NewsFOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal hears that the long-term contract extension being discussed by the Cardinals and infielder Matt Carpenter would be for six years.
Ken Rosenthal on Twitter
ImpactRosenthal's source says the deal is "very close" to being finished. Carpenter is entering his final pre-arbitration season, so this extension would run through all three arbitration years and his first two years of free agency. It's risky to lock up a 28-year-old late-bloomer coming off a breakout campaign, but the Cardinals could be saving themselves a ton of money in the long run. Carpenter was among the most productive players in baseball in 2013.
STL 'closing in' on Matt Carpenter extension | 03/06/2014 12:17 PM
NewsAccording to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman, the Cardinals are "closing in" on an extension with Matt Carpenter.
ImpactDerrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Wednesday night that the two sides were engaged in long-term talks, and it appears that progress has been made. Carpenter isn't even arbitration-eligible until 2015 and is currently under contractual control through 2017, so this deal could have significant length. Carpenter, 28, finished fourth in the National League MVP voting in 2013. He will start at third base and bat leadoff for St. Louis in 2014.
Cards talking extension with Matt Carpenter | 03/06/2014 8:35 AM
NewsDerrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the Cardinals are discussing a multi-year contract extension with third baseman Matt Carpenter.
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
Impact"This is a dream job for me," Carpenter told Goold. "And if there is something like that for me that could happen with the Cardinals, I would be grateful." The 28-year-old infielder is not even arbitration-eligible until 2015, but it's often wise for teams to lock up players in their pre-arb years. Carpenter finished fourth in the National League MVP voting in 2013 after hitting .318/.392/.481 with a league-leading 55 doubles and 126 runs in 157 games. He'll bat leadoff and play third base in 2014 for St. Louis.
Carpenter hits his way to 1st Silver Slugger | 11/06/2013 7:00 PM
NewsMatt Carpenter was honored with his first Silver Slugger Award on Wednesday night.
ImpactIt was a pretty easy choice for voters, as Carpenter led all batters not only at the position but in the entire NL in hits, runs and doubles in 2013. It was a big year for Carpenter, who was also named to his first All-Star game. Other winners from the National League were C Yadier Molina, 1B Paul Goldschmidt, 3B Pedro Alvarez, SS Ian Desmond, OF Jay Bruce, OF Michael Cuddyer, OF Andrew McCutchen and P Zack Greinke.
Carpenter collects three hits in Game 6 loss | 10/30/2013 11:28 PM
NewsMatt Carpenter went 3-for-5 in the Cardinals' Game 6 loss to the Red Sox on Wednesday.
ImpactCarpenter struggled for much of the postseason but salvaged his World Series somewhat with the three-hit night. It was his third multi-hit game in the series, and he finished with a .296/.286/.333 line in the six games. Unfortunately for the Cardinals he was one of the only hitters who could get anything going for them in the series, as they fell in six games to the Red Sox.
Carpenter has two hits, RBI in Game 4 loss | 10/27/2013 11:55 PM
NewsMatt Carpenter had a nice night at the dish in Sunday's loss to the Red Sox in Game 4 of the World Series, going 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI.
ImpactUnfortunately, the rest of the Cardinals offense totaled just four hits on the evening. Carpenter singled and scored on a Carlos Beltran single in the third inning to get the Cardinals on the board, then drove in their other run with an RBI single in the seventh. He has struggled at the plate for most of the postseason, hitting just .200 (12-for-60), but appears to be heating up just when it's absolutely needed most. The Cardinals will look to regain the upper hand in the series when they host Game 5 on Monday.
Matt Carpenter swats 11th homer in loss | 09/22/2013 11:16 PM
NewsMatt Carpenter went 2-for-3 and swatted his 11th home run in Sunday's loss to the Brewers.
ImpactCarpenter also scored a pair of runs in the game. His solo shot off Brewers starter Wily Peralta got the Cardinals on the board in the third inning. The magical season continues for the 27-year-old infielder who is now hitting .324/.396/.491 with 11 homers, a league-leading 123 runs scored, 77 RBI and three stolen bases.

NewsMatt Carpenter went 2-for-5 with a double, RBI and two runs scored as the Cardinals beat the Pirates 9-2 on Sunday.
ImpactCarpenter's seven-game hitting-streak was snapped during Saturday's 0-fer, but it didn't take him long to set the foundation for a new streak. St. Louis' leadoff man is slashing .316 /.386/.483. His batting average ranks sixth in the National League, while Carpenter has scored a league-leading 112 runs.

He also ripped an RBI double in the team's seven-run seventh inning. Carpenter has now scored a league-leading 109 runs on the season.
Carpenter goes 2-for-5 with double and 2 runs | 09/01/2013 5:47 PM
NewsMatt Carpenter went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored in a victory against the Pirates on Sunday.
ImpactThe 27-year-old doesn't steal bases, but he's stuffed box scores in every other category, batting .312 with 10 homers, 66 RBI and 102 runs. Carpenter is six doubles away from becoming the the ninth player in Cardinals' history -- fifth different -- to reach 50.
Matt Carpenter delivers 42nd double | 08/22/2013 11:44 PM
NewsMatt Carpenter went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored against the Braves on Thursday.
ImpactThat's 42 doubles for Carpenter. He has a chance to become the ninth player -- fifth different -- to reach 50 for the Cardinals, joining Stan Musial (three times), Joe Medwick (twice), Albert Pujols (twice) and Enos Slaughter. The team record of 64, owned by Medwick, is almost certainly out of reach, though.
Matt Carpenter not in Cardinals' lineup Tues. | 08/20/2013 4:02 PM
NewsMatt Carpenter is not in the Cardinals' starting lineup Tuesday night against the Brewers.
FOX Sports Midwest
ImpactIt's just a routine day of maintenance. Kolten Wong will play second base and David Freese will play third.
Carpenter fills up box score against Pirates | 08/15/2013 6:07 PM
NewsMatt Carpenter reached base in five out of six plate appearances Thursday against the Pirates, going 4-for-5 with an RBI triple, a walk and two runs scored.
ImpactCarpenter scored the winning run on a walkoff single by Matt Holliday in the 12th. Meanwhile, his double in the fourth inning was his 40th of the season. With a .315/.385/.480 batting line to go along with nine homers, 58 RBI and 90 runs scored, the 27-year-old has proven to be one of this season's best fantasy bargains.
Carpenter goes 3-for-4 with a walk, 2 doubles | 07/19/2013 11:39 PM
NewsMatt Carpenter went 3-for-4 with a walk, two doubles, three RBI and a run scored in a 9-6 victory against the Padres on Friday.
ImpactHe ranks fifth in the NL with a .326 batting average and first with 73 runs. Carpenter, who has driven in 16 runs in just 51 July at-bats, is now batting a spectacular .326/.399/.506.
Carpenter hits go-ahead homer versus Astros | 07/11/2013 12:02 AM
NewsMatt Carpenter hit his ninth home run of the year Wednesday in the Cardinals' 5-4 win over the Astros.
ImpactThe two-run shot to right field in the bottom of the seventh inning put the Cardinals ahead for good. Carpenter is batting .322/.394/.503 in 85 games this season and is on pace for 16 home runs, 76 RBI and 127 runs scored. He has been one of the most productive players in baseball in 2013 and is a deserving National League All-Star.
Matt Carpenter homers, scores three times | 07/04/2013 1:40 AM
NewsMatt Carpenter went 3-for-5 with a homer, a double, three RBI and three runs scored in the rout of the Angels on Wednesday.
ImpactIf the season ended today, it's Yadier Molina who would get MVP consideration on the Cardinals. Carpenter, though, would also be worthy of a spot on ballots, what with his .324 average, .398 OBP and 63 runs scored. He and Shin-Soo Choo have been the game's best leadoff hitters.
Carpenter goes 2-for-3 with a homer and walk | 06/24/2013 2:28 AM
NewsMatt Carpenter went 2-for-3 with a home run and a walk in Sunday's loss to the Rangers.
ImpactHe's tallied mulit-hit games in four of St. Louis' last five. Carpenter is 30-for-86 (.349) in June with nine RBI and eight extra-base hits, including two homers. The young second baseman's monster first half includes a .322/.403/.472 slash line, though fantasy owner are probably a bit disappointed by his lack of power and speed. Carpenter has six homers and one steal in 286 at-bats.
Carpenter has two hits, RBI in win over Mets | 06/13/2013 4:38 PM
NewsMatt Carpenter went 2-for-4 with an RBI triple in Thursday's win over the Mets.
ImpactWhile Carpenter's 18-game hitting streak came to an end on Tuesday, he has now reached base in 22 straight games. His transition to second base has gone surprisingly well and he owns an impressive .327/.411/.478 batting line through 63 games. It would be a surprise if he didn't make the National League All-Star team next month.
Matt Carpenter reaches base five times | 06/05/2013 1:15 AM
NewsMatt Carpenter reached base five times in the Cardinals' loss to the Diamondbacks on Tuesday.
ImpactCarpenter was hit by a pitch three times -- a franchise-first for the long-tenured Cardinals. He also had a triple to lead off the bottom of the opening frame and a single in the bottom of the 11th. The St. Louis second baseman is now batting .323/.407/.470 with 47 runs scored in 55 games played this season.
Carpenter homers, steals base against Royals | 05/28/2013 10:22 PM
NewsMatt Carpenter went 2-for-3 with a home run and a stolen base as the Cardinals beat the Royals on Tuesday.
ImpactCarpenter also scored twice and worked a walk on the night. The second baseman is now hitting .309/.394/.455 through 49 games and has been one of the most pleasant surprises thus far in the fantasy season. He seems to be entrenched at the top of the Cardinals lineup, too, so he should continue his productive ways going forward.
Carpenter swinging a hot bat in May | 05/19/2013 2:29 AM
NewsMatt Carpenter has hit safely in all but two May games.
ImpactThe young infielder is third in the NL with 33 runs scored. Carpenter's slash line of .263/.333/.442 in April was solid, but he's really turned up the heat in May, batting .375/.470/.482. If Carpenter can convert some of his doubles (14) into home runs (three), he'll eradicate a fantasy weakness to this point. Despite his hot stick, Carpenter has driven in only 14 runs. He's not a threat to run, either.
Matt Carpenter goes 3-for-4 in victory | 05/01/2013 4:55 PM
NewsMatt Carpenter went 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI from the sixth spot in the order Wednesday against the Reds.
ImpactCarpenter has typically hit first or second for the Cards this year, which had allowed him to rack up 22 runs scored in 26 games. Today's RBI was just his ninth.
Carpenter playing despite tweaked oblique | 04/28/2013 11:58 AM
NewsMatt Carpenter is back in the lineup Sunday after being removed from Saturday's game due to tightness in his left side.
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
ImpactCarpenter spent time on the DL last season with an oblique strain, so the Cardinals wanted to play it safe. It sounds like he'll be fine, though. "It tightened up on me a little bit," Carpenter said. "There in the ninth inning it was more of a precautionary move to make sure, to get me out of there in case I took a swing and it got worse. That's basically it."
Matt Carpenter goes 4-for-5, homers | 04/10/2013 4:36 PM
NewsMatt Carpenter went 4-for-5 with a homer, a double and two RBI against the Reds on Wednesday.
ImpactWhile the homer was Carpenter's first, he already has five doubles. That he won't contribute overly much in homers or steals will limit his fantasy upside, but he should be an effective regular for the Cardinals.
Matt Carpenter getting start at 2B | 04/07/2013 1:09 PM
NewsMatt Carpenter is getting his first career start at second base Sunday.
FOX Sports Midwest on Twitter
ImpactCarpenter played second base almost exclusively during spring training, but he moved to the hot corner following David Freese's injury. With Freese due back Monday, most of Carpenter's playing time going forward should come at second. Ty Wigginton is at third base Sunday in what will be his first start of the season.
Matt Carpenter could bat some leadoff | 03/22/2013 1:32 PM
NewsMatt Carpenter is batting leadoff for the Cardinals Friday, and manager Mike Matheny said he might hit Carpenter there some during the season.
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
ImpactJon Jay, who will be the team's normal leadoff hitter, is batting second Friday. Carpenter doesn't have the speed normally associated with a leadoff man, but he has a great batting eye, having posted a .365 OBP his rookie year and a .408 mark during the minors. Slated to see most of the playing time at second base this season, Carpenter's fantasy appeal would move up a notch if he spends ample time hitting first or second.
Matt Carpenter likely gets Cards' 2B job | 03/19/2013 4:06 PM
NewsMatt Carpenter appears to have earned the Cardinals' starting second base job.
ImpactThe Cardinals released Ronny Cedeno on Tuesday and will have to use Daniel Descalso as their utility infielder this season. That opens second base for Carpenter, who entered play Tuesday batting .415/.510/.610 this year in the Grapefruit League. He's a legitimate fantasy sleeper.
Matt Carpenter triples, doubles in win | 03/14/2013 4:05 PM
NewsMatt Carpenter tripled and doubled off Mike Minor as the Cardinals edged the Braves 5-4 on Thursday.
ImpactCarpenter is hitting .382 with five doubles and five walks in 32 at-bats this spring. His fantasy stock is climbing, as he's proved adequate enough at second base to likely earn a spot in the starting lineup.
Carpenter, Descalso likely to share 2B early | 03/10/2013 9:59 AM
NewsDerrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch writes that Matt Carpenter and Daniel Descalso's competition at second base is expected "to continue into the season with performance and need dictating the starter."
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
ImpactCarpenter has proved to be a quick study at second base and should ultimately see the most starts at the position this season, but Descalso will still see his fair share of playing time and is a likely late-inning defensive replacement. For fantasy purposes, Carpenter is clearly the superior option. He batted .294/.365/.463 with six homers over 296 at-bats during his rookie season and is hitting .417/.517/.583 so far this spring.
Carpenter proving capable at second base | 03/09/2013 5:45 PM
NewsMatt Carpenter has impressed Cardinals manager Mike Matheny with his defense at second base this spring.
Impact"He looks good," Matheny said. It's a nice vote of confidence for the 27-year-old. If the manager feels comfortable using Carpenter at the keystone once the regular season starts, he immediately becomes the team's best offensive option at the position. Keep an eye on how the position battle plays out in the coming weeks.
Matt Carpenter goes 4-for-4 against Nationals | 03/08/2013 5:10 PM
NewsMatt Carpenter went 4-for-4 with a couple of doubles Friday against the Nationals.
ImpactIt'd be great for the Cardinals if Carpenter proved capable at second base. The team's best offensive option there, he's 10-for-24 with four doubles and five walks this spring.
Carpenter 'ahead of schedule' in move to 2B | 02/11/2013 3:04 PM
NewsCardinals third base coach and infield instructor Jose Oquendo said Matt Carpenter is "ahead of schedule" in his tryout at second base.
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
ImpactOquendo is referring to Carpenter being "ahead of schedule" as it relates to Skip Schumaker, who also made a move to second base without every having previously played the position. Of course, it's not surprising that Carpenter has caught on quicker since he, unlike Schumaker, has been an infielder. The Cards are hoping that Carpenter can become adequate enough at second to see ample time at the position in 2013. Even if Carpenter wins the starting job, Daniel Descalso would still likely see plenty of starts and also sub in as a defensive replacement late in games.
