NewsAthletics activated LHP Drew Pomeranz from the 15-day disabled list; optioned him to Triple-A Sacramento.
ImpactPomeranz made a rehab start Saturday, as his fractured right hand is no longer an issue. However, he's no longer needed in the rotation following the addition of Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel. The lefty will represent depth at Triple-A.
Drew Pomeranz (hand) sharp in rehab debut | 07/12/2014 11:40 PM
NewsDrew Pomeranz (hand) allowed one run over four innings Saturday in his rehab debut at Triple-A Sacramento.
Sussan Slusser on Twitter
ImpactHe struck out seven, walked none, and yielded just one hit -- a solo home run. The left-hander is expected to remain at Sacramento when he's deemed healthy as an emergency option for the Oakland rotation. He's been out since June 17 with a broken right hand.
Drew Pomeranz likely to be optioned | 07/09/2014 9:45 AM
NewsDrew Pomeranz (hand) is likely to be optioned to Triple-A Sacramento when he's ready to return from the disabled list.
San Francisco Chronicle
ImpactThe A's no longer have a need in the rotation following the addition of Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel, and they'd rather keep Pomeranz stretched out at Triple-A rather than put him in the bullpen. It's also possible the club could use him as trade bait in an effort to add second base help. The lefty is nearly ready for a rehab assignment.
Drew Pomeranz to play catch Monday | 07/07/2014 6:56 PM
NewsDrew Pomeranz (hand) will try to play catch Monday.
Susan Slusser on Twitter
ImpactPomeranz has been throwing while on the disabled list, but the fracture of his right (non-throwing) had has left him unable to play catch. However, an MRI has revealed that the healing is going well, so he'll try using a glove Monday. The expectation is that Pomeranz will move to the bullpen once healthy.
Drew Pomeranz (hand) throws 'pen session | 07/01/2014 9:07 PM
NewsDrew Pomeranz (hand) threw a bullpen session Tuesday.
ImpactIt's the first time he's done so since landing on the disabled list on June 17 with a fractured right hand. Pomeranz didn't wear a glove during the session, as his hand hasn't healed enough for him to catch the ball yet. He's still weeks away from a return.
Drew Pomeranz put on DL with broken hand | 06/17/2014 4:38 PM
NewsAthletics placed LHP Drew Pomeranz on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured right hand.
ImpactIt's not yet clear how long he will be out. Pomeranz was shelled for eight runs (seven earned) over 3 2/3 innings Monday in the Athletics' loss to the Rangers. Brad Mills is expected to join Oakland's rotation this week.
Pomeranz lit up for 8 runs in ugly loss to TX | 06/17/2014 1:51 AM
NewsThe fun ended for Drew Pomeranz on Monday, as he was blasted for eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits over 3 2/3 innings Monday in a loss to the Rangers.
ImpactPomeranz had allowed one earned run or less in five of his seven outings coming into this evening. Owners waking up Tuesday morning might be chagrined -- okay, apoplectic -- about tonight's performance, but keep in mind that this is a 25-year-old who spent the first month of the season in the bullpen. The left-hander had gone 3-0 with a 2.93 ERA in three home outings entering the matchup (2.33 ERA if you include relief appearances). Looking to get back on track, Pomeranz has a Saturday afternoon date versus the Red Sox in California.
Pomeranz holds Angels to unearned run in ND | 06/11/2014 3:12 AM
NewsDrew Pomeranz continued to impress Tuesday against the Angels, allowing an unearned run over seven frames in a no-decision.
ImpactPomeranz surrendered four hits and three walks; he struck out two. Pomeranz has allowed more than two runs in just one of his seven starts, and he's given up less than two in five of seven. In addition to his superlative work earlier this year as a left-handed reliever, the southpaw has produced an aggregate 5-3 record, 1.90 ERA and 1.13 WHIP. Pomeranz welcomes the Rangers to Oakland next week.
Pomeranz excellent in loss to Yankees | 06/05/2014 4:43 PM
NewsDrew Pomeranz gave up two runs (one earned) over seven innings Thursday in a tough luck loss to the Yankees.
ImpactIt was the first seven-inning outing of his major league career. The difference in the ballgame was a solo homer by Brett Gardner in the third inning, but it was a very solid showing. Pomeranz struck out seven and walked just one in the loss and continues to surprise with a 2.20 ERA. He's gaining momentum in mixed leagues.
Drew Pomeranz gives up five runs in win | 05/31/2014 1:28 AM
NewsDrew Pomeranz was credited with a win after allowing five runs in 5 1/3 innings Friday against the Angels.
ImpactPomeranz had to deal with a couple of long waits as the A's were racking up nine runs in the first five innings, and perhaps that led to his woes tonight. It should also be mentioned that the last two of those five runs actually came after he exited in the sixth. Pomeranz remains a pretty good bet in mixed leagues for now.
Pomeranz tosses five shutout innings vs. Rays | 05/20/2014 11:15 PM
NewsDrew Pomeranz kept the Rays off the scoreboard for five innings in Tuesday's win over the Rays.
ImpactPomeranz remained spotless as a starter, as he's now thrown 15 scoreless innings in his first three starts of the season for the A's. On Tuesday, he gave up three singles and walked two while striking out three. The left-hander owns a 0.94 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 27/10 K/BB ratio over 28 2/3 innings this year. The Blue Jays will be the next team to attempt to score a run off Pomeranz when they meet in Toronto on Sunday.
Pomeranz fans 8 in 5 shutout inn. to beat CHW | 05/14/2014 1:03 AM
NewsDrew Pomeranz struck out eight and blanked the White Sox for five innings to pick up another win on Tuesday.
ImpactPomeranz's stellar showing in the bullpen and Dan Straily's struggles in the rotation prompted the latter's demotion to the minors, and it doesn't look like Pomeranz is going to give him his old job back. Pomeranz scattered three hits and walked just two tonight. He hasn't been completely stretched out, unfortunately, which is why his outing was limited to 82 pitches (up from 68 last time). Pomeranz, a former top prospect now with his third organization, hurled five shutout innings in both of those outings. He's 3-1 with a 1.14 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 24/8 K/BB rate over 23 2/3 innings. The left-hander travels east next week to oppose the Rays. By that time, he should be owned in every AL-only league. He's got enough talent that mixed league owners need to pay close attention.
Drew Pomeranz to enter A's rotation | 05/09/2014 5:05 PM
NewsDrew Pomeranz will remain in the Athletics' rotation.
Susan Slusser on Twitter
ImpactPomeranz tossed five scoreless innings in a doubleheader start Wednesday to earn a more extended look. Dan Straily has been optioned to Triple-A to clear room for the lefty. Pomeranz really struggled during his time with the Rockies, but he's a former top prospect who could have a rebirth while pitching half his games at spacious O.co Coliseum. He's worth scooping up in deeper mixed leagues.
Drew Pomeranz likely to start Wednesday | 05/06/2014 7:49 PM
NewsMLB.com's Jane Lee reports that there is a "good chance" Drew Pomeranz will start the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader versus the Mariners.
Jane Lee on Twitter
ImpactThat's assuming he's not needed in relief Tuesday. It had been reported previously that Arnold Leon would get the start, but he's apparently being called up to help out in the bullpen. Lee says that Pomeranz could get up to 75 pitches. With Tommy Milone struggling, it's possible Pomeranz could get a longer look in the rotation if he pitches well.
Pomeranz not ruled out for spot start | 05/04/2014 11:52 AM
NewsAthletics manager Bob Melvin on Sunday didn't rule out Drew Pomeranz start one of the games during Wednesday's doubleheader against the Mariners.
Susan Slusser on Twitter
ImpactIt's interesting to note, but Josh Lindblom and Arnold Leon are still viewed as the favorites to draw the start. The A's do figure to stretch Pomeranz out at some point, and he'd be an interesting fantasy flier when that happens. The lefty holds a 1.98 ERA over nine relief appearances this season.
Pomeranz pitches well against the Indians | 03/19/2014 6:13 PM
NewsDrew Pomeranz tossed two perfect innings against the Indians on Wednesday.
ImpactPomeranz, being stretched out as a starter, struck out two in the effort. Overall, the lefty has struck out 13 in 7 1/3 innings, including nine over his last four innings. The great spring performance will make it likely the A's call his name if they need additional rotation depth.
Pomeranz to be stretched out as starter | 03/18/2014 12:21 PM
NewsAthletics manager Bob Melvin indicated Tuesday that Drew Pomeranz will be stretched out as a starter.
Jane Lee on Twitter
ImpactAcquired from the Rockies this winter in the Brett Anderson deal, Pomeranz has been used in short stints this spring, but the A's are short on rotation depth at the moment. He'll likely begin the year in Triple-A, but he could be called up if Jesse Chavez or Tommy Milone struggle or Scott Kazmir (triceps) has a setback.
Drew Pomeranz throws bullpen session | 02/18/2014 10:25 PM
NewsDrew Pomeranz (leg) threw a bullpen session Tuesday.
ImpactPomeranz had his first bullpen session last week pushed back due to an ingrown hair on his leg that had to be lanced. The left-hander will compete for a rotation spot this spring but will most likely wind up in the bullpen or in the Triple-A rotation. "The ball screams out of his hand," said A's manager Bob Melvin. "Obviously he has plus-velocity. Nice just to get a first look at a guy, and there's definitely a lot of upside."
A's get Pomeranz from Rockies for Anderson | 12/10/2013 5:50 PM
NewsAthletics acquired LHP Drew Pomeranz and RHP Chris Jensen from the Rockies for LHP Brett Anderson.
ImpactPomeranz was the fifth overall pick in the 2010 MLB Amateur Draft and cracked Baseball America's Top 100 prospect rankings twice, but he has struggled to find his way at the major league level. Moving from the thin air of Colorado to the pitcher-friendly environment in Oakland will maybe spur the 25-year-old left-hander's development. The A's will keep him in a starting role for now but could eventually move him to the bullpen if that doesn't work out.
Rockies could use Pomeranz to get Anderson | 12/10/2013 4:30 PM
NewsAccording to MLB.com's Thomas Harding, the Rockies could use Drew Pomeranz in a trade for Brett Anderson.
ImpactColorado has been suggested as a possible landing spot for the A's Anderson multiple times in the past week and it sounds like the two sides are indeed sorting through some trade ideas. Pomeranz has a 5.20 career ERA in the major leagues, but he's only 25 years old and was once considered a top pitching prospect. He was the fifth overall pick in the 2010 MLB Amateur Draft.
Pomeranz throws two innings in simulated game | 09/13/2013 8:04 PM
NewsDrew Pomeranz (biceps) threw two successful innings in a simulated game on Friday.
Troy Renck on Twitter
ImpactThe 24-year-old southpaw still hopes to return before the end of the 2013 season, though it's unclear whether that would be as a starter or in the bullpen. It's been another highly disappointing season for him, registering an 8.10 ERA and 2.52 WHIP through 16 2/3 innings with the Rockies.
Pomeranz (biceps) throws bullpen session | 09/10/2013 9:58 AM
NewsDrew Pomeranz (biceps) threw a bullpen session Monday.
ImpactPomeranz was activated from the disabled list Friday and has been out since mid-July with left bicep tendinitis. Manager Walt Weiss doesn't expect him to start a game before the end of the season, but he could appear as a reliever if healthy.
Rockies activate Pomeranz from disabled list | 09/06/2013 7:22 PM
NewsRockies activated LHP Drew Pomeranz from the 15-day disabled list.
ImpactPomeranz has been out since mid-July with tendinitis in his left bicep. It's unclear if he'll immediately return to the rotation, or if he'll work out of the bullpen for the time being. The 24-year-old southpaw owns a troubling 8.10 ERA and 2.52 WHIP through 16 2/3 innings with the Rockies this season.

NewsRockies placed LHP Drew Pomeranz on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 23, with left bicep tendinitis.
ImpactPomeranz has really struggled in four starts with the Rockies this season and it appears that his health could be a big reason for that. Collin McHugh will take his place in the rotation for now.
Drew Pomeranz (biceps) headed to DL | 07/25/2013 9:32 PM
NewsDrew Pomeranz is headed to the disabled list after being unable to complete a bullpen session Thursday because of pain in his left biceps.
ImpactPomeranz's spot in the rotation was already on thin ice due to an 8.10 ERA, 2.52 WHIP and 13/18 K/BB ratio over 16 2/3 innings. He'll now be sidelined for at least a few weeks while Collin McHugh takes his spot in the rotation.
Drew Pomeranz falls to 0-4 | 07/23/2013 12:12 AM
NewsDrew Pomeranz dropped to 0-4 after allowing three runs in 4 1/3 innings against the Marlins on Monday.
ImpactNot only has Pomeranz lost all four of his starts, but he hasn't even lasted five innings yet. The Rockies don't have any ideal replacements at the moment, but they just can't do much worse right now. Maybe they'll be able to land a fungible starter in a trade.
Rockies recall LHP Pomeranz from Double-A | 07/22/2013 5:24 PM
NewsRockies recalled LHP Drew Pomeranz from Double-A Tulsa.
ImpactPomeranz was sent down prior to the All-Star break, but the Rockies just wanted to keep him on his regular turn. He'll return Monday night to face the struggling Marlins. The 24-year-old southpaw owns a disappointing 8.76 ERA and 11/14 K/BB ratio over three starts this season and should be considered a wait-and-see option in fantasy leagues.

NewsDrew Pomeranz was hammered for seven runs over 5 1/3 innings Tuesday in a start with Double-A Tulsa.
Tracy Ringolsby on Twitter
ImpactOuch. Pomeranz gave up 10 hits and one walk while striking out five. The Rockies sent him down in order to stay on turn, so he'll come back up to start Monday against the Marlins. However, with an 8.76 ERA and 11/14 K/BB ratio over three starts this season, he can be avoided in most fantasy leagues.
Rockies option Drew Pomeranz to Triple-A | 07/12/2013 7:37 PM
NewsRockies optioned LHP Drew Pomeranz to Triple-A Colorado Springs.
ImpactThe 24-year-old southpaw continues to struggle through each opportunity he gets, surrendering three runs on seven hits in just four innings in his most recent start. Through 12 1/3 innings this season, he owns an 8.76 ERA and 11/14 K/BB ratio. He'll have to improve his command if he ever wants to secure a permanent spot in the rotation.
Pomeranz struggles in loss to Dodgers | 07/12/2013 1:37 AM
NewsDrew Pomeranz struggled Thursday against the Dodgers, giving up three runs on seven hits and five walks over just four innings.
ImpactPomeranz needed 91 pitches just to get 12 outs. He walked the bases loaded in the fourth inning before Mark Ellis cashed in with a two-run single. The young right-hander now owns an ugly 8.76 ERA and 11/14 K/BB ratio in 12 1/3 innings through three starts. He may need to head back to the minors for some more seasoning.

Drew Pomeranz recalled from Triple-A | 06/30/2013 1:06 PM
NewsRockies recalled LHP Drew Pomeranz from Triple-A Colorado Springs.
ImpactPomeranz will make his season debut on Sunday against the Giants and is taking Juan Nicasio's spot in the rotation. Though he's been up-and-down at Colorado Springs this year, Pomeranz put up a 96/33 K/BB ratio over 85 2/3 innings and offers plenty of upside. Those in deep leagues should take a shot on him.
Rockies replacing Nicasio with Pomeranz | 06/27/2013 7:31 PM
NewsThe Rockies will recall Drew Pomeranz from Triple-A Colorado Springs to start on Sunday against the Giants.
ImpactHe'll take the rotation spot of Juan Nicasio, who lasted just 2 1/3 innings in his last outing and holds a 5.31 ERA and 1.46 WHIP over 16 starts. Pomeranz has been inconsistent at Colorado Springs, posting a 4.20 ERA, but he's pitched well in his last three starts and holds a 96/33 K/BB ratio over 85 2/3 innings. Those in deeper leagues should take a shot on the talented left-hander.

Troy Renck on Twitter
ImpactPomeranz has shown good velocity this spring, but he's put up a 5.50 ERA and the Rockies want to see him work on some things in the minors. The odds are pretty good that he'll wind up spending a good chunk of the year in the major league rotation.
Pomeranz expected to be named fifth starter | 03/22/2013 8:39 PM
NewsAccording to Troy Renck of the Denver Post, Drew Pomeranz is the leading candidate to secure the fifth spot in the Rockies' Opening Day rotation.
Troy Renck on Twitter
ImpactThe young lefty has struggled this spring, posting a 5.50 ERA, 1.94 WHIP and 13/7 K/BB ratio over his 18 innings, but he remains the best option that the team has. His fantasy value is extremely limited while pitching half of his games at Coors Field, but he could be a useful source of strikeouts in NL-only formats when skimmed for his road starts.
Drew Pomeranz struggles against Giants | 03/22/2013 12:12 AM
NewsDrew Pomeranz yielded three runs on 10 hits and two walks over five innings Thursday against the Giants.
ImpactPomeranz did strike out four, but he obviously allowed way too many baserunners. The left-hander has shown good velocity this spring, but he's posted an uninspiring 5.50 ERA and 1.94 WHIP over 18 Cactus League innings.
Pomeranz allows two runs in loss to White Sox | 03/11/2013 6:29 PM
NewsDrew Pomeranz yielded two earned runs in four innings Monday as the Rockies fell to the White Sox.
ImpactPomeranz surrendered four hits and issued two walks. He is now 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA in this year's Cactus League. The young left-hander still carries good potential, but he can go undrafted in most mixed fantasy leagues.

NewsDrew Pomeranz held USA to one run over 2 2/3 innings in Wednesday's exhibition contest.
ImpactPomeranz allowed three hits and two walks while striking out one. More impressively, the left-hander's fastball reportedly touched 96 mph. Pomeranz was up-and-down during his first full season, but the 24-year-old holds some fantasy appeal as a late-round flier.
