|Assets:||Owns a great glove for the shortstop position, but can also play elsewhere in the infield. Is also an emerging hitter with the potential for all-round production.|
|Flaws:||Must prove he can stay healthy. Needs to develop his offensive game further, since he's still quite raw with the bat. Also, he is not much of a base-stealer.|

Diamondbacks utility infielder Didi Gregorius is a career .500 hitter (7-for-14) versus Minnesota's Ricky Nolasco. | 09/22/2014 1:59 PM
NewsDiamondbacks utility infielder Didi Gregorius is a career .500 hitter (7-for-14) versus Minnesota's Ricky Nolasco.
ImpactGregorius has hit safely in his last three games, but is batting just .211 for the year with a .632 OPS. he might be worth a one-day flier.

NewsDiamondbacks utility infielder Didi Gregorius hit a three-run home run in the eighth to lift Arizona to victory, 5-2, over San Diego.

Gregorius makes first start at 2B on Saturday | 06/07/2014 9:05 PM
NewsDidi Gregorius made his first career start at second base on Saturday.
Jack Magruder on Twitter
ImpactWith Aaron Hill getting a day off, Gregorius got the call after starting his first 104 career games at shortstop. That Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson is finding a way to get his bat in the lineup is no surprise -- he has four hits, four runs scored and two home runs in his two games since being recalled. Chris Owings started at shortstop on Saturday.
Didi Gregorius hits another leadoff homer | 06/07/2014 1:11 AM
NewsDidi Gregorius hit his second leadoff homer in as many starts Friday against the Braves.
ImpactWe're not sure this is a good thing for the Diamondbacks. Chris Owings was doing very steady work as the team's shortstop -- he was hitting .285/.323/.462 in 186 at-bats -- yet now he's taken a seat in favor of Gregorius two of the last three games. Gregorius, of course, started out like gangbusters last year, too, but quickly turned mediocre afterwards, which allowed Owings to win the job this spring. Gregorius may well be one of the game's 30 best shortstops, but Owings is better and doesn't deserve to sit against right-handers. The best-case scenario for Arizona would be if Gregorius's quick start could allow him to bring back a quality young outfielder or pitcher in trade.
D-Backs recall INF Gregorius from Triple-A | 06/03/2014 12:27 PM
NewsDiamondbacks recalled INF Didi Gregorius from Triple-A Reno.
ImpactHe'll replace the injured Cliff Pennington (thumb) on the active roster and will serve as Chris Owings' backup. Gregorius, last year's starting shortstop for Arizona, was hitting .310/.389/.447 through 57 games in Triple-A this season.
Mets 'continue to monitor' Didi Gregorius | 05/21/2014 1:12 PM
NewsAndy Martino of the New York Daily News reports that the Mets "continue to monitor" Didi Gregorius.
New York Daily News
ImpactThe Mets had talks with the D'Backs during spring training about the shortstop, but nothing ever materialized. Arizona's recent addition of Tony La Russa as Chief Baseball Officer could complicate any potential trades they'd make in the near term, so it's doubtful a deal is going to happen anytime soon. Martino notes that Brad Miller and Nick Franklin "remain possibilities", although "there has been nothing lately" as far as talks go between the Mets and Mariners. The Mets also want to give Wilmer Flores a shot at shortstop.
Diamondbacks option Gregorius to Triple-A | 03/30/2014 4:14 PM
NewsDiamondbacks optioned INF Didi Gregorius to Triple-A Reno.
ImpactThe 24-year-old struggled with the bat in Cactus League play, slashing .222/.255/.267 in 45 at-bats, losing out on the team's starting shortstop job to Chris Owings. The team is exploring trade options for him, but until he earns a full-time gig someplace, he remains irrelevant in most fantasy leagues.
Gregorius loses SS battle, to start in minors | 03/29/2014 9:03 PM
NewsDidi Gregorius lost out to Chris Owings in the starting shortstop battle and will start the year in the minors, per the Diamondbacks' Twitter page.
Arizona Diamondbacks on Twitter
ImpactOwings was looking like the favorite to win the job, and the team made it official Saturday. Gregorius will likely be sent to Triple-A Reno, where he'll be the starting shortstop. It's likely that Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers explores a trade for the 24-year-old in the coming days.
Pirates have interest in D'Backs SS Gregorius | 03/24/2014 12:26 PM
NewsAccording to FOX Sports' Jon Morosi, the Pirates have had discussions with the Diamondbacks about a trade involving young shortstop Didi Gregorius.
Jon Morosi on Twitter
ImpactAnother strong indication that Chris Owings is going to open the 2014 regular season as the Diamondbacks' starting shortstop. Gregorius is very good defensively, but he batted just .202/.294/.284 over his final 65 games in 2013 and there's little hope for a major turnaround on that front. The Pirates are poised to start the defensively-challenged Jordy Mercer this year at short.
Didi Gregorius goes hitless in start | 03/23/2014 2:15 AM
NewsAs planned, Didi Gregorius got the start for the Diamondbacks on Sunday and went 0-for-3 with a walk.
ImpactStarting Gregorius over Chris Owings against a lefty didn't make much sense, but this was all part of Kirk Gibson's plan. Owings ended up pinch-hitting after Paco Rodriguez retired Gregorius in the seventh and singled. Gregorius did have a nice game defensively, but that's most of what he has to offer. Unless he's traded, he figures to be optioned to Triple-A later this week.
D'Backs willing to deal Gregorius, not Owings | 03/19/2014 8:52 AM
NewsESPN New York is reporting that the Diamondbacks are making Didi Gregorius -- and not Chris Owings -- available in trade discussions.
ESPN New York
ImpactArizona is targeting a starting pitcher to offset the loss of intended Opening Day starter Patrick Corbin (UCL tear). Three D'Back scouts took in a Mets intrasquad game involving Double-A and Triple-A players Tuesday; starters Noah Syndergaard, Logan Verrett and Jacob deGrom all pitched in that game. Over his first 38 games last season, Gregorius hit .322. He slashed .202/.294/.284 in his remaining 65 games. Owings, obviously favored for the starting shortstop job, is one of the game's best prospects at that position.
D-Backs send scouts to Mets camp | 03/18/2014 1:22 PM
NewsAdam Rubin of ESPN New York reports that Diamondbacks scouts were on hand to watch Mets prospects on Tuesday in Port St. Lucie.
ESPN New York
ImpactIt's an interesting note given that Didi Gregorius and Chris Owings have come up in trade rumors and the Mets are on the lookout for a shortstop. Owings is reportedly favored for the starting shortstop job for Arizona, so Gregorius might be the more realistic target. Mariners scouts have also been a presence at Mets camp this winter, as speculation continues about a possible match involving Nick Franklin.
Gregorius has a three-hit day against LA | 03/12/2014 7:12 PM
NewsDidi Gregorius finished 3-for-4 with three singles and a stolen base on Wednesday against the Dodgers.
ImpactGregorius broke out of his spring slump with a multi-hit day. The 24-year-old is competing with Chris Owings for the starting shortstop job.
Gregorius continues to struggle with the bat | 03/07/2014 10:07 PM
NewsThe offensive woes for Didi Gregorius continued on Friday, as the young shortstop went 0-for-2 in a losing effort against the Athletics.
ImpactGregorius is now just 3-for-17 (.176) in the early Cactus League season. He's battling with Chris Owings to become the team's starting shortstop, but neither competitor has come out of the gate swinging. Fantasy owners are likely rooting for Owings to claim the job outright, as he profiles as a much more productive player across the board.
Diamondbacks are open to trading a shortstop | 02/27/2014 3:02 PM
NewsDiamondbacks GM Kevin Towers acknowledged Wednesday that he's open to trading a shortstop.
ImpactDidi Gregorius and Chris Owings are currently battling over starting duties in Diamondbacks camp. The loser of that competition could be shipped to another team before Opening Day. "For us, it would have to be the right deal," Towers told the Arizona Republic. "Our biggest needs in our system are catching. If it's the right, top-notch catching prospect. Someone we could have right behind [Miguel Montero]. More of an upper-level guy. Maybe a top, upper-end starter. We have a lot of bullpen depth, infielders. Maybe an outfielder, but probably more catching and Double-A, Triple-A type starter."
Towers: Gregorius 'favorite' to win SS job | 02/08/2014 9:56 PM
NewsDiamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers said Didi Gregorius is the "favorite" to win the starting shortstop job this spring, according to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com.
Impact"To me, the favorite has to be Didi," Towers said. "He was our shortstop last year. For a rookie, I thought he played very, very well." Towers goes on to say he thought Gregorius wore down near the end of the season, contributing to his poor finish at the plate. Gregorius and top prospect Chris Owings will vie for the starting gig in the coming weeks, with the loser likely starting the season at Triple-A Reno. Owings winning the job would certainly be the preference for fantasy owners, but it seems he'll have to earn it. It's definitely a battle worth watching.
Gregorius smacks 2-run HR in loss | 09/11/2013 1:53 AM
NewsDidi Gregorius hit a two-run homer Tuesday in an 11-innings loss against the Dodgers.
ImpactHe finished 1-for-4. Gregorius began this season like gangbusters, looking like a potential Rookie of the Year candidate, but he posted OPS' of .589, .673 and .513 in June, July and August, respectively. Those struggles made for an awkward September, because manager Kirk Gibson is auditioning Chris Owings, who absolutely mauled minor league pitching this year, to potentially steal his job in 2014.
Gregorius hitting .211/.292/.265 since June 1 | 08/15/2013 7:34 PM
NewsDidi Gregorius is batting just .211/.292/.265 over 186 plate appearances since June 1.
ImpactIf we want to take a little more liberty with the end-point, Gregorius is hitting an anemic .184/.260/.235 with one homer and five RBI over 151 plate appearances since June 8. It's been a long, grueling regression to the mean for the precocious shortstop who was batting .322 with an .882 OPS entering play on June 8. Arizona never expected the 23-year-old to hit nearly that well, so they can't be disappointed with the way the situation has unfolded. Gregorius, a glove-first, glove-second shortstop, will remain in the lineup because of his leather. He just isn't worth a roster spot in mixed leagues.
Didi Gregorius goes 3-for-3 against Cubs | 07/23/2013 1:04 AM
NewsDidi Gregorius went 3-for-3 with a double and a walk as the Diamondbacks' No. 8 hitter on Monday.
ImpactGregorius started out his major league career on fire, but he entered tonight at .221/.292/.292 in his last 45 games. The Diamondbacks can't be too disappointed, since he never figured to be much of an offensive asset in the first place. His glove has been as advertised, so he's worthy of his lineup spot.
Didi Gregorius sitting out on Sunday | 06/16/2013 1:53 PM
NewsDidi Gregorius is not in the Diamondbacks' lineup Sunday.
MLB Lineups on Twitter
ImpactGregorius has predictably faded after a hot start and is batting just .136/.240/.136 over his last seven contests. Cliff Pennington is at shortstop Sunday.
Gregorius goes 0-for-4 with 2 strikeouts | 06/10/2013 2:11 AM
NewsDidi Gregorius went 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts in Sunday's loss to the Giants.
ImpactGregorius struck out five times in seven at-bats over his last two games, failing to reach base in seven at-bats and dropping his average from .322 to .308. The rookie shortstop hasn't stolen a base this season, but he's reached base in 37% of his plate appearances and will score plenty of runs hitting in front of Paul Goldschmidt and Eric Chavez.
Gregorius goes 2-for-4 with a 3B, HR, 3 RBI | 05/28/2013 2:34 AM
NewsDidi Gregorius went 2-for-4 with a triple, home run and three RBI in Monday's 5-4 victory over the Rangers.
ImpactAfter a pair of 0-fers, Gregorius returned to a starting role. The young shortstop has been one of fantasy baseball's breakout stars, batting .324/.385/.541 with four homers and 11 RBI despite not making the Opening Day roster and missing time on the disabled list due to a concussion.
Gregorius goes 0-for-3 with a walk in victory | 05/27/2013 1:42 AM
NewsDidi Gregorius went 0-for-3 with a walk in Sunday's one-run victory over the Padres.
ImpactComing into the game, Gregorius had recorded multi-hit games in three of his last six. The rookie shortstop continues to make a mockery of offseason offensive projections, batting .330/.395/.515 through 103 at-bats. Gregorius is going to score a ton of runs this season out of the No. 2 hole, hitting in front of Paul Goldschmidt and Eric Chavez.
Gregorius has two extra-base hits in loss | 05/12/2013 8:41 PM
NewsDidi Gregorius went 2-for-5 with a double and his first triple of the season in Sunday's extra-innings loss to the Phillies.
ImpactGregorius was bumped to the No. 2 spot in the lineup when he returned from the DL, and he's likely going to continue to hit there. He's outperformed his offensive expectations to this point, so he still needs to prove he can make adjustments when big league pitchers start to figure him out. Gregorius is batting .362/.403/.655 with a 1.058 OPS through his first 15 games.
Gregorius homers in return to lineup | 05/05/2013 9:28 PM
NewsDidi Gregorius went 2-for-3 with a home run Sunday in his return to the lineup.
ImpactGregorius was activated from the DL on Saturday, but didn't start. He homered off Edinson Volquez in his first plate appearance and accounted for the Diamondbacks' lone run. Paul Goldschmidt was the only other D-Backs player to get a hit Sunday. Gregorius is batting .433/.469/.867 with a 1.335 OPS in eight games this season.
Diamondbacks activate Gregorius from 7-day DL | 05/04/2013 3:57 PM
NewsDiamondbacks activated SS Didi Gregorius from the 7-day disabled list.
ImpactGregorius hasn't played since being hit in the helmet by a pitch last Friday, but was cleared to resume baseball activities earlier this week. The 23-year-old was batting .407 (11-for-27) with two home runs and four doubles in seven games prior to landing on the DL. Gregorius should remain the Diamondbacks' everyday shortstop even when Aaron Hill (hand) returns.

NewsDidi Gregorius passed all concussion tests Tuesday and has been cleared to resume baseball activities.
Impact"He'll take ground balls, swing and do everything today except play the game," D'Backs manager Kirk Gibson said. "He has passed everything he has needed to pass." Gibson added that Gregorius isn't a given to be activated on Saturday when first eligible, but it seems likely that he will be.
Didi Gregorius (concussion) placed on DL | 04/28/2013 2:41 PM
NewsDiamondbacks placed SS Didi Gregorius on the 7-day concussion disabled list.

Gregorius leaves after getting hit in helmet | 04/27/2013 12:10 AM
NewsDidi Gregorius was removed from Friday's game against the Rockies after being hit in the helmet by a fastball from Josh Outman.
ImpactGregorius remained on the ground for a couple of minutes after taking the fastball off his helmet, but eventually got up and was able to walk off the field under his own power. The team is likely to play it very safe with a head injury, so it wouldn't be surprising to see Gregorius miss a couple of games.
Didi Gregorius gets day off | 04/26/2013 8:39 AM
NewsDidi Gregorius wasn't in the lineup Thursday, but Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said the shortstop has "felt nothing in that elbow at all."
ImpactThe D'Backs have given Gregorius a couple days off as they ease him back into things following a UCL sprain, but his red-hot start has probably resulted in him playing more than they originally intended. "He's felt nothing in that elbow at all, but we do feel recovery days are important for everybody and certainly for a guy coming off an injury like that," Gibson said.
Didi Gregorius gets a pair of hits | 04/24/2013 7:35 PM
NewsDidi Gregorius went 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles and a run scored in Wednesday's win over the Giants.
ImpactGregorius also struck out a couple times, but he was the only D'Back to record more than one base knock. The youngster has been red-hot since last week's call-up, batting .400 with two homers and four doubles over his first 27 plate appearances. The league will figure him out eventually, but he can be used in all fantasy formats while he's hot.
| 04/21/2013 8:30 PM
NewsDidi Gregorius went 2-for-4 with a home run in Sunday's win over the Rockies.
ImpactGregorius has two home runs and a 1.765 OPS in his first three games since returning from the disabled list. The Diamondbacks are saying that they don't want to use him as an everyday player right away, but it's looking like its only a matter of time before he takes over as the starting shortstop. Gregorius should be on your radar in deeper mixed leagues.
Gregorius goes deep in first at-bat as D'Back | 04/18/2013 11:28 PM
NewsDidi Gregorius homered on the first pitch he saw as a Diamondback and also added a double in his next at-bat in Thursday's win over the Yankees.
ImpactPhil Hughes left a fastball out over the middle of the plate, and Gregorius lined it into the short porch in right field. The young infielder was retired in his final three at-bats, two via strikeout, but that hardly puts a damper on an impressive 2013 debut. We're skeptical of Gregorius' ability to hit right away (he's batted just .267/.319/.375 in the minors), but he's worth a gamble in fantasy leagues to see if he can get off to a nice start.
Gregorius won't play everyday initially | 04/17/2013 9:40 AM
NewsDiamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers indicated Tuesday that Didi Gregorius will not be an everyday player right away.
ImpactGregorius was forced to begin the season on the disabled list due to a UCL sprain in his right elbow, so the Diamondbacks are still being cautious about his workload. However, his return gives the Diamondbacks the option to use Cliff Pennington at second base while Aaron Hill is sidelined with a broken hand. Martin Prado started at second base Tuesday night while Eric Chavez played the hot corner, so Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson has many options at his disposal.
D-Backs activate Gregorious (elbow) from DL | 04/16/2013 3:44 PM
NewsDiamondbacks activated INF Didi Gregorius from the 15-day disabled list.
ImpactGregorius replaces the injured Aaron Hill (hand) on the active roster. The 23-year-old was forced to begin the year on the DL with a UCL sprain, but he batted .387 (12-for-31) with two homers, two doubles and a stolen base over seven rehab games with Triple-A Reno. He could potentially take over as the starting shortstop while Cliff Pennington could fill in for Hill at second base.

NewsDidi Gregorius (elbow) is batting .423 in 26 at-bats during his rehab assignment with Triple-A Reno.

ImpactGregorius had been limited to designated hitter duty, but he's making his season debut at shortstop on Monday. If Aaron Hill (wrist) has to go on the disabled list, Gregorius is an option to replace him. The D'Backs would likely make him the starting shortstop and move Cliff Pennington over to second base.
Didi Gregorius to only PH and DH initially | 04/02/2013 11:06 PM
NewsDidi Gregorius (elbow) will only pinch-hit and be used as a designated hitter initially when he begins a rehab assignment with Triple-A Reno on Thursday.
ImpactThe D'Backs hope by April 15 he'll be able to play defense. Gregorius, who is dealing with a UCL sprain in his right elbow, will be assigned to Reno when he's healthy. However, he's a good bet to take over for Cliff Pennington at some point during the first half.
Diamondbacks place Gregorius on 15-day DL | 03/31/2013 4:24 PM
NewsDiamondbacks placed SS Didi Gregorius on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 30, with a right elbow sprain.
ImpactGregorius suffered a UCL sprain early in spring training, but is on track to return sometime around mid-April. He could resume playing shortstop in the next 1-2 weeks. The Diamondbacks are counting on him to take over for Cliff Pennington at shortstop at some point this season.
Didi Gregorius to return to field April 10-12 | 03/28/2013 8:56 PM
NewsDidi Gregorius (elbow) could resume playing shortstop sometime between April 10-12.
ImpactGregorius only resumed throwing a week ago as he works his way back from a slight ulnar collateral ligament strain. The young infielder is slated to being the season at Triple-A Reno, but he should take over for Cliff Pennington at shortstop at some point this season.

NewsDidi Gregorius (elbow) will make his Cactus League debut Thursday.
ImpactGregorius will be limited to DH duty for now as he works his way back from a slight ulnar collateral ligament strain. "It's going great," D"'acks manager Kirk Gibson said of Gregorius' progress. "At the same time, we're going to stay on the program. It's the right thing to do. He's exactly on schedule. He's had no setbacks along the way." Gregorius is slated to open the year as Triple-A Reno's shortstop.
Gregorius throwing for first time this spring | 03/02/2013 6:22 PM
NewsDidi Gregorius played catch Saturday, the first time he's thrown since being shut down earlier this winter after experiencing discomfort in his right elbow.
ImpactIt's good news for the Diamondbacks and their 23-year-old shortstop, as it looks like he will avoid surgery. Unfortunately for Gregorius, the injury precluded him from competing for a starting role this spring. In the near term, Gregorius will throw from about 60 feet for the next week before the team decides where to go from there. He is still viewed as the team's shortstop of the future.
Didi Gregorius won't throw for two weeks | 02/12/2013 8:48 PM
NewsDiamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers said Didi Gregorius (elbow) is "probably two weeks away from starting a throwing program."
ImpactThe Diamondbacks' offseason acquisition is dealing with a "slight" UCL issue in his right elbow. While the injury isn't expected to require surgery, it means that Gregorius will not begin the season with the major league club. Arizona will likely go with Cliff Pennington as their primary shortstop, with Willie Bloomquist and John McDonald also seeing time there.
