'50/50' chance Bobby Parnell has surgery | 04/03/2014 8:05 PM
NewsBobby Parnell (elbow) indicated Thursday that doctors have told him it's "50/50" whether he will need to undergo Tommy John surgery.
ImpactParnell has a torn medial collateral ligament, but because the tear is in the thick part of the ligament doctors are giving him a better chance to heal via rest and rehab. He's been given a platelet-rich plasma injection and will be re-evaluated after two weeks. Parnell said he may make a decision on surgery after those two weeks are up rather than wait six weeks as had been previously reported.

NewsBobby Parnell is not expected to make a decision about Tommy John elbow surgery for another six weeks.

ImpactParnell was given a platelet-rich plasma injection on Tuesday and will hope that it helps the healing process for his torn medial collateral ligament. If the plasma doesn't work, he'll then go under the knife and begin a rehab process that will likely last through the early part of the 2015 season. Jose Valverde is expected to get the first crack at save opportunities for the Mets.

New York Mets on Twitter
ImpactParnell showed diminished velocity and movement on his pitches during Monday's game and now we know why. He complained of tightness in his forearm after the game and the partial tear was found following an MRI. He received a platelet-rich plasma injection and will rest for two weeks before resuming at throwing program, but surgery is possible if he doesn't show improvement. Jose Valverde figures to get the save chances for New York in his absence and is suddenly a must-own in all fantasy leagues.
Bobby Parnell blows save, Mets lose opener | 03/31/2014 5:06 PM
NewsBobby Parnell blew the first save of the 2014 MLB season in Monday's loss to the Nationals.
ImpactParnell had velocity issues all spring and they didn't suddenly disappear in Monday's regular-season opener. He hit 93 mph at one point, but his fastball mostly sat in the 89-91 mph range and the Nationals were able to take advantage. Attempting to protect a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the ninth inning, Parnell allowed a single to Ian Desmond, a walk to Danny Espinosa, and then Denard Span doubled in the tying run. Jose Valverde looks like a worthwhile add in standard fantasy leagues.

NewsBobby Parnell might not pitch more than two days in a row in the early part of the season.
Marc Carig on Twitter
ImpactParnell is coming back from neck surgery and his velocity isn't all the way there yet, so there's a chance Jose Valverde could get the occasional save chance early in the year. The Mets are surely hoping it won't take long for Parnell to get back to normal.
Bobby Parnell allows first spring run | 03/25/2014 4:40 PM
NewsBobby Parnell gave up his first run of the spring Tuesday when he surrendered a solo homer to Ryan Zimmerman.

Bobby Parnell pitches hitless inning | 03/12/2014 4:47 PM
NewsBobby Parnell pitched a hitless ninth versus the Cardinals on Monday.
ImpactParnell's velocity isn't all of the way back after neck surgery, but it doesn't sound like the Mets have any intention of using someone else to close early on. It's Parnell's job unless he starts struggling in regular-season games.

NewsBobby Parnell (quad) will make his Grapefruit League debut on Monday.

ImpactParnell threw a scoreless inning in a "B" game on Thursday, so he's ready to roll. The reliever is coming off of neck surgery, but it's a tight quad that's slowed his routine in camp. However, it appears that both issues are now behind him, and he should be fine to close on Opening Day if he doesn't have any setbacks.

Impact"Everything felt good," Parnell said afterward. "Coming into it my routine was good and my arm was strong. I felt like I came out there throwing strikes, so I'm happy with it." Bobby Parnell tweaks quad Thursday | 02/21/2014 10:23 AM
NewsBobby Parnell suffered a minor quad injury while covering first base during a drill Thursday.
ImpactIt sounds like it's no big deal, but the Mets understandably want to be cautious at this point in camp. "Everyone thinks it's very, very mild," pitching coach Dan Warthen said Friday. "He wanted to throw today." Parnell has looked good to this point as he works his way back from surgery to repair a herniated disk in his neck.

NewsBobby Parnell (neck) has pushed back his bullpen session from Thursday to Friday.
ESPN New York
ImpactParnell, who is coming back from neck surgery, just threw 35 pitches in a bullpen session on Tuesday and simply doesn't want to push it this early in camp. "I'm running off of Bobby 100 percent," said Mets pitching coach Dan Warthen. "He said he feels good, but he's smart enough to tell me if he needs the extra day. I had him scheduled to throw today. He said, 'I can throw, but how about an extra day?'" The Mets aim for Parnell to make his spring debut on March 10, which should give him plenty of time to get ready for the regular season assuming no setbacks.

Long Island Newsday
ImpactIt's expected to be another light session in which he only throws around 10 pitches, but is still a big step in the right direction for the Mets closer. He's expected to be healthy and ready to go for the start of the regular season, but the Mets have inked Kyle Farnsworth and Jose Valverde as insurance options.

ImpactMaking his way back from surgery in September to repair a herniated disk in his neck, Parnell was cleared to resume baseball activities two weeks ago. The Mets might take things a little slowly with him in spring training, but, barring any setbacks, the close should be ready for Opening Day.

NewsIn a conference call on Friday, Bobby Parnell clarified that he feels he's still the Mets closer.
Impact"In my head I feel like I'm still the closer. I'm going to go along with that until told otherwise" stated Parnell. He added that he's working hard this offseason to come back from his neck surgery, and fully believes he will be ready to help the Mets from day one. He's currently going off fantasy draft boards as one of the last closers selected, and makes for an interesting option for those pushing the position to the later rounds.

NewsBobby Parnell (neck) was cleared this week by Dr. Robert Watkins to resume all baseball-related activities.
ESPN New York
ImpactIt's excellent news for the 29-year-old closer, who underwent surgery in September to repair a herniated disk in his neck. Parnell should be on the same page as the rest of the Mets' pitchers this spring in camp and looks to be a safe fantasy bet on draft day. He posted a 2.16 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 44/12 K/BB ratio in 50 innings last season.
GM fairly confident in Parnell's neck health | 12/17/2013 2:13 PM
NewsMets GM Sandy Alderson is "fairly confident" that Bobby Parnell (neck) will be fully healthy for spring training.
ESPN New York
ImpactParnell had surgery in September to repair a herniated disk in his neck. "He's regained the weight," Alderson said. "He's about to start throwing again. And we don't anticipate any problems. But that's one of the reasons we're going to have him come back up to New York -- to be seen not necessarily for a surgical follow-up, but just an overall review. But right now we don't have any reason to believe he won't be ready." The Mets are hoping that their closer will be a go for spring training, but Alderson added that New York would like to add another late-innings reliever.

NewsA follow-up exam Monday on Bobby Parnell's neck showed continued improvement.
ImpactHowever, it's still up in the air as to whether he'll undergo surgery to repair a herniated disc. Parnell will have another exam in two weeks before he decides whether or not to go under the knife. "I really don't know what to think," Parnell said. "Me personally, I feel like I can get better, and I feel like I'll be better by spring training. I just don't know whether or not it's going to recur again, and that's what I'm more worried about than anything."
Bobby Parnell optimistic he'll return | 08/22/2013 6:47 PM
NewsBobby Parnell (neck) said Wednesday that he remains optimistic about returning this season.
ImpactParnell, who is dealing with a herniated disc in his neck, is feeling better after a couple weeks of therapy. He's yet to resume throwing, though, and season-ending surgery is still an option. More will be known about his status early next month.
Bobby Parnell's symptoms 'lessening' | 08/20/2013 10:38 PM
NewsMets manager Terry Collins said Tuesday that Bobby Parnell's (neck) symptoms "are lessening."
ImpactParnell is not, however, ready to begin baseball activities. The closer received an epidural earlier this month for a herniated disk in his neck in hopes that it would speed along the healing process. It appears to have helped some, but the Mets haven't ruled out him eventually needing season-ending surgery.

ImpactParnell is currently dealing with a herniated disk in his neck which is pushing on a nerve and causing discomfort down his arm. He received an epidural on Monday and is prepared to get a similar injection in about a week, after which surgery could be considered if there's no improvement. "I don't want the season to end like this," said Parnell. "I want to get back. But I've got to be smart about it, too. If I go out and re-injure it right quick, it's going to set me back even farther. We'll see how this first shot goes and go from there." Mets manager Terry Collins plans to go with a closer-by-committee during his absence, though veteran LaTroy Hawkins got the save Tuesday night against the Rockies.
Mets place Bobby Parnell (neck) on 15-day DL | 08/06/2013 3:27 PM
NewsMets placed RHP Bobby Parnell on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 31, with neck stiffness.
ImpactThat's the move to make room for Wilmer Flores on the active roster. Parnell hasn't pitched in a week due to neck discomfort and received a cortisone shot on Monday. He'll be eligible to return late next week, but it's not clear if he'll be ready by then. David Aardsma is the most likely option to fill in at closer, though he has struggled in his most recent appearances.

ImpactParnell was unavailable for a fifth straight game on Sunday due to stiffness in his neck. He's going to be examined by a specialist on Monday to determine the extent of the injury. David Aardsma hasn't pitched well lately but could be a productive stash in deeper mixed fantasy leagues.

NewsBobby Parnell pitched a perfect ninth inning to pick up his 19th save of the season on Tuesday.
ImpactParnell came into the game having allowed four runs -- just one earned, though -- in his previous two appearances. The scoreless inning was refreshing, then, and he struck out two Braves to boot. Despite his mini-slump, the right-hander still owns a 2.35 ERA and 0.96 WHIP for the year. His job isn't in jeopardy.
Bobby Parnell blows fourth save | 07/22/2013 10:38 PM
NewsBobby Parnell took his fourth blown save and fifth loss after allowing two runs -- one earned -- in the ninth against the Braves.
ImpactParnell was also sloppy on Saturday, but he got the save in that one. The blown save tonight was his first since June 4. His job should be secure for the rest of the season, but he needs a strong second half to convince everyone that he should be the man going forward.
Bobby Parnell struggles, escapes with save | 07/20/2013 4:49 PM
NewsBobby Parnell allowed a two-run homer to Chase Utley on Saturday, but escaped, earning his 18th save of the season.
ImpactBoth of the runs were unearned. He's been terrific this season, compiling a 2.25 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 38/10 K/BB ratio over his 44 innings of work. Yet in fantasy circles, he remains in the middle tier of closers simply due to his lack of save opportunities. He has now converted 18-of-21 chances on the season.

NewsAccording to Andy Martino of the New York Daily News, the Mets do not expect to trade Bobby Parnell.
New York Daily News
ImpactParnell is one of the Mets' few attractive deadline chips, but the 28-year-old right-hander is under contract for two more seasons beyond this one and there's no rush to get him out the door quite yet. Parnell has a 2.83 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 26/8 K/BB ratio in 28 2/3 innings this year and he is 9-for-12 so far in save opportunities.
Bobby Parnell blows third save | 06/04/2013 9:46 PM
NewsBobby Parnell blew his third save of the season Tuesday, retiring only one batter while allowing two runs on three hits and a walk in a loss to the Nationals.
ImpactParnell was tasked with protecting a 2-1 lead, but the only batter he retired drove in the winning run on a sacrifice fly. It's frustrating for Parnell's fantasy owners, especially since he doesn't get many save chances. Still, it's just the second time he's been scored on since the beginning of May, and he still boasts a 2.55 ERA and 1.01 WHIP.
Bobby Parnell gives up three runs in loss | 05/22/2013 4:33 PM
NewsAfter entering a tie game in the ninth, Bobby Parnell was charged with three runs and a loss Wednesday against the Reds.
ImpactParnell's only mistake was Shin-Soo Choo's leadoff double. After that came a groundout, an intentional walk, an excuse-me double down the first-base line that Ike Davis could have handled but hoped would go foul, another intentional walk and then a bloop single. Parnell didn't deserve to have three runs added to his total, taking his ERA from 0.93 to 2.21. And he probably doesn't need to be intentionally walking batters when the league is hitting .160 against him this season.
Parnell earns sixth save, Mets defeat Cubs | 05/19/2013 5:33 PM
NewsBobby Parnell earned his sixth save of 2013 in the Mets' 4-3 win over the Cubs on Sunday.
ImpactParnell struck out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth inning. The 28-year-old right-hander has an exceptional 0.93 ERA, 0.67 WHIP and 18/3 K/BB ratio in 19 1/3 innings this season to go along with his six saves. The Mets aren't going to win many games, but Parnell carries plenty of mixed league fantasy value.
Parnell gets win as Mets blank White Sox | 05/07/2013 10:15 PM
NewsBobby Parnell pitched a perfect 10th inning to earn the win over the White Sox on Tuesday.
ImpactParnell entered in a scoreless game and kept it that way by striking out two of the three batters he faced. The Mets closer is now 3-0 but has just three saves despite a microscopic ERA and WHIP. The low save total isn't a reflection of his ability, obviously, but the Mets just aren't likely to win a ton of games. Still, his job appears to be safe and when opportunities are presented, he will get the job done more often than not.

NewsBobby Parnell needed just seven pitches to throw a perfect ninth inning for a save Wednesday against the Marlins.
ImpactParnell was upset about not getting the ball Tuesday in a save situation, but the Mets decided to be cautious after he threw one inning Sunday and two on Monday. The save today was his third in five opportunities.
Bobby Parnell takes second blown save | 04/30/2013 12:58 AM
NewsBobby Parnell took his second blown save after giving up a run in the ninth Monday against the Marlins.
ImpactIf Collin Cowgill had gotten a better break on Rob Brantly's shallow fly to center, Parnell likely would have escaped with the save tonight. He stayed in and pitched a scoreless 10th in a tie game after the blown save. Parnell's closing gig is still pretty safe.
Bobby Parnell blows save | 04/17/2013 1:24 AM
NewsBobby Parnell blew his first save of the season in Tuesday's loss to the Rockies.
ImpactIt wasn't his fault. Parnell came on for a four-out save in the eighth and induced what should have been an inning-ending grounder, but Ruben Tejada's throw to first base sailed high, allowing two runs to score. The hard-thrower then allowed a single and a flyout before striking out a pair in a perfect ninth. Parnell has pitched well in the early going and will at least initially keep the closer job after Frank Francisco returns.
Bobby Parnell strikes out side against Cards | 03/29/2013 4:51 PM
NewsBobby Parnell struck out all three Cardinals he faced in the ninth inning in a 7-2 win Friday.
ImpactParnell's spring ends with a 2.13 ERA in 12 2/3 innings. There are still some lingering questions about how he'll handle the pressures of the ninth inning, but we expect that he'll be a perfectly fine closer.
Bobby Parnell takes loss in relief | 03/13/2013 4:28 PM
NewsBobby Parnell gave up four runs -- three earned -- in an inning to take a blown save and a loss Wednesday against the Nationals.
ImpactParnell had allowed just an unearned run in six innings this spring, so one bad day isn't going to make much of a difference. All signs point to him opening the season as the Mets' closer.
Bobby Parnell picks up save against Nationals | 02/23/2013 4:45 PM
NewsBobby Parnell pitched a scoreless ninth to close out the Mets' 5-3 win over the Nationals on Saturday.
ImpactMost closers work early in games at the beginning of spring training so that they can face the opposing team's better hitters. Terry Collins, though, apparently is more interested in seeing Parnell demonstrate his closer mentality against Double-A players. It was mission accomplished today.
Parnell to be closer if Francisco is hurt | 02/13/2013 10:08 AM
NewsMets manager Terry Collins called Bobby Parnell on Tuesday night to inform him that he will be the closer if Frank Francisco (elbow) isn't ready for the season.
Adam Rubin on Twitter
ImpactCollins said as much on WFAN yesterday, but he didn't get around to telling Parnell until last night. The 28-year-old right-hander has struggled in previous opportunities at closer, but there's no question that he has the talent to run away with the job. Track Francisco's progress during spring training, but Parnell could be a nice late-round selection in mixed fantasy leagues.
Collins wants Parnell to be Mets' closer | 02/12/2013 3:02 PM
NewsMets manager Terry Collins said on WFAN on Tuesday that he wants Bobby Parnell to be the team's closer.
D.J. Short on Twitter
ImpactCollins admitted that he hasn't even spoken to Parnell about the situation, but that's the way he plans to go now that Frank Francisco is shut down due to elbow inflammation. Parnell has struggled in sporadic save opportunities in the past, but he has a 2.98 ERA, 8.7 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9 over the past three seasons. He could emerge as a nice late-round sleeper in mixed fantasy leagues.
Mets avoid arbitration with Bobby Parnell | 01/17/2013 8:57 PM
NewsMets and RHP Bobby Parnell avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.7 million contract.
Anthony McCarron on Twitter
ImpactParnell was arbitration-eligible for the first time and did pretty well for himself. The 28-year-old righty could be next in line for saves this season for the Mets and is worth a late-round stash in mixed fantasy leagues.
