Doolittle goes four outs for save against M's | 07/13/2014 9:15 PM
NewsSean Doolittle got four outs for his 14th save on Sunday, closing out a win over the Mariners.
ImpactDoolittle entered with two runners on and two outs in the eighth inning, getting Kyle Seager to pop out to end the threat. He worked a perfect ninth for his 14th save. The lefty has a 2.89 ERA, 0.66 WHIP and 63/2 K/BB ratio over 43 2/3 innings this year, and he enters the second half firmly entrenched as the A's closer.
Doolittle allows homer but earns 13th save | 07/06/2014 10:21 PM
NewsSean Doolittle allowed a solo home run but closed out the Blue Jays on Sunday for his 13th save of the season.
ImpactAfter a long stretch of scorless outings that led to him becoming the A's closer, Doolittle has now allowed at least one run in three of his last five appearances. The solo home run by Steve Tolleson didn't affect the outcome, though, and he set down the rest of the batters he faced to earn the save. Even with a few hiccups, Doolittle has a 2.98 ERA, 0.69 WHIP and 61/2 K/BB ratio in 42 1/3 innings and should continue to pitch well into the second half.

NewsSean Doolittle struck out two in a shutout ninth inning to pick up his 12th save in Thursday's win over the Blue Jays.
ImpactIt was a nice bounceback appearance for Doolittle, who coughed up a walkoff grand slam to Rajai Davis on Monday. He'd given up five runs over his last two outings. The lefty is now 12-for-13 in save chances and sports a 2.90 ERA, a 0.67 WHIP, and an insane 59/2 K/BB ratio in 40 1/3 innings.
Sean Doolittle gives up grand slam in loss | 06/30/2014 11:46 PM
NewsSean Doolittle gave up a walkoff grand slam to Rajai Davis in the ninth inning of Monday's loss to the Tigers.
ImpactDoolittle entered the night having allowed one walk, two homers and 22 hits in 39 innings, but he gave up a walk, a homer and three hits while getting just one out in this one. Of course, everyone is allowed an off night once in a while. Unfortunately for Doolittle, it comes at a time when the All-Star rosters are close to getting chosen, and his current 2.97 ERA is a lot less attractive than his previous 2.08 mark.

NewsSean Doolittle struck out the side in the ninth inning to pick up his 11th save in Wednesday's win over the Mets.

NewsSean Doolittle slammed the door on the Orioles in the 11th inning on Friday, striking out each of the three hitters that he faced to protect a one-run advantage.
ImpactThere hasn't been a better pitcher in baseball over the past five weeks, as Doolittle hasn't allowed a run in his last 16 appearances (17 1/3 innings) while posting an absolutely dominant 29/1 K/BB ratio. He looks poised to lock down the closer's job in Oakland for the foreseeable future and needs to be started in all mixed leagues.

NewsSean Doolittle worked a perfect 10th inning to pick up his sixth save of the season in Tuesday's win over the Yankees.
ImpactThe A's put up a three-spot in the top of the tenth, removing almost all pressure on Doolittle to convert the save. The lefty got a weak pop up, a strikeout, and a weak ground out in the frame. Doolittle hasn't allowed a run since April 26 and now has a 2.67 ERA, 0.74 WHIP, and a 39/1 K/BB ratio in 27 innings.

ImpactDoolittle has been a force out of the A's bullpen this season, registering a 2.77 ERA, 0.77 WHIP and 38/1 K/BB ratio over 26 innings. The hard-throwing southpaw looks poised to lock down the closer's job for a considerable amount of time and should be started in all mixed leagues at this point.
Doolittle picks up fourth save in win vs Rays | 05/21/2014 11:16 PM
NewsSean Doolittle picked up his fourth save of the season in Wednesday's win over the Rays.
ImpactDoolittle struck out a pair in a scoreless ninth. The lefty has settled down after a nightmarish April, now stringing together 10 consecutive scoreless appearances. In those 10 games, Doolittle has struck out 19 and walked one in 11 1/3 innings.
Doolittle converts third save as A's top Rays | 05/20/2014 11:44 PM
NewsSean Doolittle struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning to earn his third save of the season, closing out the Athletics' 3-0 win over the Rays on Tuesday.
ImpactDoolittle hadn't issued a free pass all season before feared walking slugger Ryan Hanigan with two outs. It was an otherwise carefree inning of work, as he struck out Evan Longoria and Wil Myers before getting Logan Forsythe to pop out to end the game. He still hasn't allowed a run in 9 1/3 innings in May, lowering his ERA to 3.27. Closer-needy teams should be all over the southpaw by now.
Melvin says Sean Doolittle will close for A's | 05/20/2014 11:08 PM
NewsAthletics manager Bob Melvin said Tuesday that "the way things are setting up, (Sean Doolittle will) be in the closer role."
Susan Slusser on Twitter
ImpactDoolittle closed out the Rays with a scoreless ninth inning Tuesday to earn his third save of the season. With a 3.27 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and ridiculous 30/1 K/BB ratio over 22 innings this season, Doolittle has probably been the team's best reliever. He's been unscored upon in his last nine appearances and is certainly good enough to run with the role.
Sean Doolittle expected to get around $14M | 04/20/2014 11:43 AM
NewsSusan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that Sean Doolittle is "likely to get around $14 million guaranteed" on his new five-year contract.
San Francisco Chronicle
ImpactThe A's have options for 2019 and 2020, which could bring the total value of the deal to over $20 million. Locking any reliever up for that long is a risk, but it's a reasonable price to pay. Doolittle should easily be worth the deal if he can manage to stay healthy.
A's sign Doolittle to four-year extension | 04/18/2014 4:49 PM
NewsAthletics signed LHP Sean Doolittle to a four-year contract extension.
ImpactThe deal was announced as a five-year contract, but it includes this season. The A's will also have club options for 2019 and 2020. The financials of the contract are not yet known. Doolittle would have been eligible for arbitration for the first time this winter, so the new deal will buy out his arbitration years and possibly his first two years of free agency. Doolittle holds a 3.10 ERA with 129 strikeouts over 125 innings over his first 122 relief appearances for the A's.
Doolittle earns first save vs. M's on Sunday | 04/13/2014 7:48 PM
NewsSean Doolittle struck out two over a scoreless ninth inning to earn his first save of the season Sunday against the Mariners.
ImpactIt was just Doolittle's fourth save of his career. The left-hander is part of A's manager Bob Melvin's bullpen-by-committee following Jim Johnson's struggles, so it may not be his last save this year. Still, unless he's explicitly named by Melvin he's likely not a rosterable source of saves.

NewsSean Doolittle will not throw for the next few days while nursing a right calf strain.
Jane Lee on Twitter
ImpactIt shouldn't be a big deal as long as he doesn't have any setbacks. Fellow bullpen mate Ryan Cook (shoulder) is also banged up, but the A's are expecting to have both he and Doolittle in time for Opening Day.
Sean Doolittle earns save in win over Rangers | 09/14/2013 12:40 AM
NewsSean Doolittle earned his second save of the season in Friday's victory over the Rangers.
Susan Slusser on Twitter
ImpactIt was Doolittle, not Grant Balfour, who was called upon to protect a one-run advantage. Don't read too much into it though, as Balfour was up and ready in the bullpen. A's manager Bob Melvin indicated he wanted Doolittle in there to face the left-handed hitters coming up, and didn't want to waste him for just one hitter.
Doolittle handcuffs Kansas City, earns hold | 05/19/2013 3:20 AM
NewsSean Doolittle retired the Royals in order in the eighth inning Saturday, picking up his seventh hold.
ImpactThose of you in holds league already know Doolittle. Those of you in deeper formats should get acquainted with him as well, if you haven't already. Doolittle is 3-0 with a 0.95 ERA, 0.58 WHIP and 19/3 K/BB rate over 20 appearances. Doolittle surrendered a pair of solo homers in late-April. Outside of that, nobody has touched him.

Impact16 of Doolittle's 19 pitches were strikes. With a 1.04 ERA and nine strikeouts in 8 2/3 innings, he's again looking like one of the game's best setup men.
