NewsTigers avoided arbitration with RHP Rick Porcello by agreeing to a one-year, $8.5 million contract.

ImpactIt was the third of four arbitration years for Porcello. The right-hander posted another disappointing 4.32 ERA in 2013 but saw his peripherals improve. He should benefit greatly from an improved Tigers defense in 2014.
Tigers expected to trade Porcello this winter | 11/17/2013 12:20 AM
NewsAccording to Buster Olney of ESPN, the Tigers are expected to trade Rick Porcello this offseason.
ImpactThe Tigers are known to be shopping both Porcello and Max Scherzer, and Olney believes that with the team in a position to contend for a World Series title, that trading Porcello is the most likely scenario. Porcello, who is still just 24-years-old, has already racked up 61 victories in his first five seasons and is under team control through 2015.
Tigers open to trading Porcello or Scherzer | 11/11/2013 3:44 PM
NewsAccording to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman, the Tigers have been telling teams that they're open to trading either Rick Porcello or Max Scherzer this offseason.
Jon Heyman on Twitter
ImpactScherzer is the 2013 Cy Young Award favorite in the American League and will likely draw much more interest, but Porcello would come far cheaper in a trade and is under contractual control for one year longer. Porcello posted a decent 4.32 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 142/42 K/BB ratio in 177 innings this past summer for Detroit. He'll be a free agent after the 2015 season. Scherzer is set to become a free agent next winter.

Rick Porcello strikes out 10 in win | 09/16/2013 11:05 PM
NewsRick Porcello yielded one run in six innings and struck out 10 versus the Mariners in Monday's victory.
ImpactPorcello missed too many bats to go the distance like he did last week against the White Sox, but he was terrific once again. Of course, nothing he does this month will prevent him from being sent to the bullpen come October. The only way that will change is if one of the Tigers' other four starters gets hurt.

ImpactPorcello did his part in the home run derby, as he served up shots to David Ortiz, Stephen Drew and Jacoby Ellsbury before departing after five innings. The start was a reminder that, while Porcello has been better this season, he's still not a mixed league option in an ideal world. The 24-year-old will look to rebound Tuesday at the White Sox.

NewsRick Porcello allowed three runs in six innings to earn the win on Wednesday against the White Sox.
ImpactIt was the kind of start we expect from Porcello -- unspectacular, but steady enough to have a chance at a win. The 24-year-old gave up seven hits, walking none and striking out six. Porcello is still in line to serve a one-start suspension at some point, so with the All-Star break it could be a while before we see the right-hander again.

NewsRick Porcello delivered a terrific performance in Friday's victory over the Indians, allowing just five hits and a pair of walks over seven scoreless frames.
ImpactPorcello struck out six in the impressive outing. He kept the Tribe hitters off balance for most of the evening, allowing just one extra-base hit. He'll carry a 5-6 record, 4.82 ERA and 74/19 K/BB ratio through 93 1/3 innings into his next outing. Depending on when he serves his pending suspension, that start should occur sometime next weekend at home against the Rangers.

Porcello rocked again, takes loss to Angels | 06/25/2013 11:43 PM
NewsRick Porcello took the loss on Tuesday, allowing seven runs on 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings against the Angels.
ImpactJust when it seemed Porcello had turned the page, he's now turned in two bad starts in a row his last two times out. Porcello was especially bad on Tuesday, as he gave up 10 hits and walked two while striking out two as well. It's hard to know what to make of the right-hander at this point, so it's best to bench him in mixed leagues until further notice. He'll start against the Rays in Tampa on Sunday.
Rick Porcello gives up six runs in defeat | 06/19/2013 4:48 PM
NewsRick Porcello was tagged for six runs in six innings by the Orioles in a loss Wednesday.
ImpactComing off four straight excellent starts, Porcello appeared on the way to another nice outing today, at least until the fourth. He gave up all six runs and seven hits in that frame before coming back with perfect fifth and sixth innings afterwards. One bad innings doesn't necessarily mean that his strong run is over, but it does put a damper on things. Fortunately, he'll miss the Red Sox this weekend and get the Angels next time out.
Porcello outstanding in victory over Twins | 06/14/2013 11:40 PM
NewsRick Porcello delivered another outstanding performance in Friday's victory over the Twins, scattering three hits over seven scoreless innings.
ImpactPorcello fanned five on the night without walking a batter. He's been particularly impressive over his last four outings, where he's compiled a 1.33 ERA, 0.70 WHIP and 29/4 K/BB ratio over 27 innings. Aside from one debacle of an inning against the Rangers in April, the 24-year-old has actually pitched very well this season. He'll look to continue that trend when he takes on the Orioles at home on Wednesday.

NewsRick Porcello allowed only two runs -- one earned -- in six innings Saturday as the Tigers beat the Indians.
ImpactPorcello was solid once again, yielding only three hits and two walks while striking out seven Cleveland hitters. The 24-year-old right-hander has looked sharp in three straight starts and has lowered his ERA from 5.29 to 4.86 since the end of May. He also has a cool 1.22 WHIP, and his strikeout rate is way better than it has ever been. Consider streaming Porcello next week at pitcher-friendly Target Field.

NewsRick Porcello was impressive in Friday's victory over the Rangers, allowing only one run on five hits over 5 2/3 innings.
ImpactPorcello uncharacteristically punched out six on the evening while allowing only one walk. The only damage against him on the evening was a solo homer off the bat of Geovany Soto in the fifth inning. After a brutal beginning to the season, the 24-year-old right-hander has rebounded nicely, posting four consecutive quality starts. He'll look to extend that streak to five when he takes on the Twins at home on Thursday.
Rick Porcello solid again in no-decision | 05/12/2013 5:18 PM
NewsRick Porcello held the Indians to two runs over six innings Sunday but took a no-decision.
ImpactHe gave up just four hits, walked a pair and struck out six. Porcello was in line for hit second win of the season, but Jose Valvede coughed up the lead in the ninth and the Tigers lost in extra innings. The right still has an ugly 6.68 ERA for the season but has put together three straight quality starts since last month's disaster in Anaheim. He gets the Rangers on the road next.

NewsRick Porcello will not make his next start until May 12 against the Indians.
ImpactThe Tigers have off-days on Monday and Thursday next week, which means that Porcello will be skipped in the rotation and pitch out of the bullpen for now. The 24-year-old gave up three runs in seven innings Thursday against the Astros, but still holds a rough 7.52 ERA across five starts and one relief appearance this season.

NewsRick Porcello notched his first win of the season Saturday by holding the Braves to three runs over 6 1/3 innings.
ImpactPorcello gave up a three-spot in the third inning, but he was able to hold the Braves off the board the rest of the way. All told, he allowed five hits and two walks to go along with five strikeouts. His ERA improved from 11.08 to 8.84 with the victory. It's going to take him a while to dig out of that hole.
Porcello rocked, Tigers routed by Angels | 04/20/2013 6:03 PM
NewsRick Porcello only registered two outs in his start Saturday afternoon against the Angels.
ImpactPorcello yielded a walk, nine hits and nine earned runs in the first inning before being lifted. It was a brutal showing from the 24-year-old right-hander and ballooned his ERA from 5.11 to 11.08. He also has an ugly 2.00 WHIP in 13 innings this season. Porcello is not worth owning right now in mixed leagues.
Porcello makes relief appearance Sunday | 04/14/2013 8:15 PM
NewsRick Porcello made a relief appearance in Sunday's win over Oakland.
ImpactPorcello pitched the final two innings in mopup duty with the Tigers ahead by nine runs. Manager Jim Leyland was just looking to save his bullpen after going through three relievers Saturday. Porcello finished with just 19 pitches, so it shouldn't affect his schedule going into next week.
Rick Porcello gives up four runs to Jays | 04/10/2013 7:22 PM
NewsRick Porcello yielded four runs in five-plus innings Wednesday against the Blue Jays.
ImpactPorcello pitched scoreless ball for 4 2/3 innings before Emilio Bonifacio's RBI double in the fifth. In the sixth, Porcello allowed two singles and an RBI double to start the inning and was removed. Darin Downs came in and allowed both inherited runners to score, adding to Porcello's ERA. Porcello's first two starts haven't gone as hoped following his excellent spring. Still, he's pitched somewhat better than the 6.10 ERA suggests.

ImpactHe won the spot over left-hander Drew Smyly, who will pitch out of the bullpen. Porcello has a solid 3.00 ERA and 21/0 K/BB ratio over 24 innings of work this spring. While he has been the subject of trade talk for months, the Tigers will hang on to him for now.

NewsRick Porcello moved to 4-1 this spring after allowing three runs in six innings Monday against the Marlins.
ImpactPorcello upped his spring total to 24 innings without walking a batter. He struck out just three today after fanning 18 in his previous 18 innings, but he got 11 outs on the ground.
Tigers haven't proposed Rick Porcello deal | 03/22/2013 10:33 AM
NewsTigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said he has "not proposed a deal (involving Rick Porcello) to one other club all spring."
ImpactESPN's Jim Bowden reported Thursday that the Tigers tried to get Huston Street or Luke Gregerson from the Padres in exchange for Rick Porcello but were turned down, but Dombrowski refutes the report. "It's simply not right," Dombrowski said. "Does it mean I don't listen? No. You always listen to what people have to say. Is it gonna happen? Most likely not." While we don't doubt Dombrowski is telling the truth that he didn't propose a deal, it's just semantics. Porcello is definitely on the trade block and will be shipped out, likely for bullpen help, if the right offer comes along.

ImpactPorcello posted a weak 4.59 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 107/44 K/BB ratio across 176 1/3 innings last season for Detroit. He's an innings-eater, and an underwhelming one at that. The Tigers will struggle to get a good reliever in return. Word is the Rangers and Cardinals also have interest.
Cardinals 'checking out' righty Rick Porcello | 03/21/2013 9:31 AM
NewsJoe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the Cardinals are "checking out" Rick Porcello.
Joe Strauss on Twitter
ImpactThe Cardinals do not lack rotation depth, so it's curious that they're expressing interest in acquiring a starter. Porcello has also drawn the attention of the Padres and Rangers this spring. He posted an underwhelming 4.59 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 107/44 K/BB ratio in 176 1/3 innings last season for Detroit, but the former first-round draft pick is only 24 years old.
Padres and Rangers 'most active' for Porcello | 03/20/2013 9:42 AM
NewsAccording to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports, the Padres and Rangers are the "most active" among teams interested in trading for Tigers' right-hander Rick Porcello.
ImpactIn fact, the Padres made an "aggressive offer" last week, but were turned down. Talks with the Rangers aren't at an advanced stage, but prospect shortstop Leury Garcia and right-hander Nicholas Tepesch are on the Tigers' wish list. The Orioles have also scouted Porcello, but Rosenthal and Morosi hear that there are still doubts about whether the Tigers will actually move him. Drew Smyly represents an alternative for Detroit's rotation, but they could keep him around as a long reliever or send him to Triple-A to continue to start every fifth day.
No decision yet on Tigers' fifth starter | 03/19/2013 10:12 PM
NewsTigers manager Jim Leyland said Tuesday that no decision has been made yet on whether Rick Porcello or Drew Smyly will open 2013 as the team's fifth starter.
ImpactLeyland added that the decision will come down to the final days of spring training, and that he'll have all six of his starters ready to throw 100 pitches. Porcello has been lights-out through five spring starts, now with a 2.50 ERA, 0.78 WHIP and 18/0 K/BB ratio over 18 innings. Still just 24 years old, he could be poised for a breakout season. The only question is whether that will be for the Tigers or a new team.
Rangers talking to Tigers about Rick Porcello | 03/17/2013 11:41 PM
NewsFOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Rangers are among the teams interested in trading for Rick Porcello.
ImpactPorcello has been on the trading block all offseason and would provide an upgrade over the Rangers' current fifth starter candidates. The Padres have also expressed interest in Porcello, but are unwilling to meet the Tigers' asking price.
Rick Porcello earns third spring win | 03/15/2013 4:32 PM
NewsRick Porcello picked up his third spring victory after allowing two runs in five innings Friday against the Blue Jays.
ImpactPorcello was facing a lineup that included just one starter in Colby Rasmus and two likely bench players, so it wasn't the best of tests. Still, it was another fine outing for Porcello this spring. He struck out four and walked none today. He has an 18/0 K/BB ratio in 18 innings.
Rick Porcello goes five scoreless in victory | 03/10/2013 4:02 PM
NewsRick Porcello shut out the Nationals for five innings, striking out four, in Detroit's 2-1 win Sunday.
ImpactPorcello can't be hurting his trade stock with nine scoreless innings and 10 strikeouts in his last two outings. Of course, he's also giving the Tigers more reason to keep him; he has the stuff to go for more strikeouts, and if he does start racking up some more, that would allow him to rely less on the team's porous infield defense.
Porcello at closer highly unlikely to happen | 03/06/2013 12:18 PM
NewsTigers manager Jim Leyland said Wednesday that putting Rick Porcello at closer is "highly unlikely" to happen.
Jason Beck on Twitter
ImpactLeyland told reporters Tuesday that it's "not necessarily a wild thought" but there are no wheels in motion and it doesn't seem like it's really going to be explored. The Tigers have been disappointing with Bruce Rondon's control and are said to be in the market for a new ninth-inning man. If one is not acquired, the Tigers will probably go with a committee at closer.
Rick Porcello at closer not a 'wild thought' | 03/05/2013 8:12 PM
NewsTigers manager Jim Leyland said Tuesday that using Rick Porcello at closer is not "necessarily a wild thought."
ImpactIt's an interesting comment, but the reality is that it surely won't happen. Porcello is battling Drew Smyly for the final spot in the rotation and could wind up in the bullpen, but it would likely be as a long reliever. His name has also been involved in trade rumors. The Tigers appear eager to look for help outside the organization to stabilize their ninth inning situation.
Rangers have interest in Tigers' Porcello | 03/04/2013 7:43 PM
NewsAccording to ESPNDallas.com, the Rangers inquired Monday about the availability of Rick Porcello.
ESPN Dallas/Fort Worth
ImpactWith Martin Perez (forearm) out for a month and Justin Grimm struggling so far this spring, the Rangers are in the market for rotation help. Porcello showcased himself well Monday for a possible deal, hurling four scoreless innings while striking out six.
Rick Porcello strikes out six in win | 03/04/2013 6:21 PM
NewsWith several scouts in attendance, Rick Porcello pitched four scoreless innings and strick out six in the Tigers' 8-5 defeat of the Astros on Monday.
ImpactThat can't hurt his trade value. Many believe the Tigers will end up dealing Porcello and going with Drew Smyly as their fifth starter. He's allowed three runs and posted a 10/0 K/BB ratio in eight innings this spring.
Rick Porcello gives up three runs to Braves | 02/27/2013 5:06 PM
NewsRick Porcello surrendered three runs in two innings Wednesday in a loss to the Braves.
ImpactPorcello was perfect for two innings against Atlanta five days ago, but the Braves jumped all over him today, with Juan Francisco hitting a three-run homer in the first. Porcello allowed four hits and plunked a batter before his afternoon was finished.
Rick Porcello perfect for two innings | 02/22/2013 5:26 PM
NewsRick Porcello retired all six Braves he faced in his start Friday.
ImpactPorcello was often mentioned in trade rumors over the winter, and he would have been a better bet for fantasy purposes had he been moved to a team with a stronger infield defense. The Tigers have the option of moving him to the pen and elevating Drew Smyly to the rotation in his place. However, it doesn't sound like they have any intention of going that route initially.
Porcello 'not considering' move to bullpen | 02/16/2013 1:18 PM
NewsRick Porcello told the Detroit Free Press that he's "not even considering" the possibility that he could open this season in the bullpen
Detroit Free Press
Impact"I'm not even thinking about it, Porcello said. "I believe that I'm an established starter and belong in the starting rotation, and that's what I'm thinking about. I'm preparing to start." Porcello has been on the trade block since the Tigers re-signed Anibal Sanchez earlier this offseason, and could still be moved before Opening Day. However, he could be asked to move to the bullpen if Drew Smyly beats him out for the final spot in Detroit's rotation. Porcello allowed the highest batting average of any full-time starting pitcher in the AL last season.

ImpactUSA Today's Bob Nightengale reported earlier Thursday that the D'Backs would try to flip the newly acquired Nick Ahmed in a deal for Rick Porcello, but it doesn't sound like Towers is anxious to make such a move. Tigers agree to one-year deal with Porcello | 01/18/2013 11:45 PM
NewsTigers and RHP Rick Porcello avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $5.1 million contract.
ImpactThe 24-year-old right-hander was arbitration eligible for the second time due to his status as a super-two player. He's struggled in each of the past two seasons, but still owns 48 career wins through his age-23 season. A very popular name on the trade market, Porcello could be better served on a team with better infield defense behind him.

Tigers, Cubs, O's talked three-way deal | 01/08/2013 4:42 PM
NewsMASN's Roch Kubatko reports that the Tigers have discussed trading Rick Porcello to the Cubs, with the Orioles involved as a possible third party.
ImpactThe Tigers are trying to get the Orioles involved because they covet shortstop J.J. Hardy and don't feel the Cubs have the proper component to make a two-team trade. For the deal to work, the Cubs would likely have to send pitching to the Orioles. However, Kubatko doesn't believe the Orioles will bite unless they are overwhelmed by an offer for Hardy. The Orioles have reportedly expressed interest in Porcello, so it's possible they could try to work out a deal with the Tigers without involvement from the Cubs.
