J.P. Arencibia gets yanked in seventh | 04/14/2014 11:55 PM
NewsJ.P. Arencibia went 0-for-2, grounded into a double play and committed his second error of the year before being remove for a pinch-hitter Monday against the Mariners.
ImpactThe Rangers shouldn't have signed Arencibia over the winter, they shouldn't have carried him after his awful spring (even with Geovany Soto hurt) and they shouldn't continue to keep him around now. Just admit the mistake and move on.
J.P. Arencibia goes hitless in loss | 04/07/2014 10:36 PM
NewsJ.P. Arencibia went 0-for-3 and had a passed ball Monday against the Red Sox.
ImpactArencibia isn't one of those catchers who makes up for his poor hitting with strong defense, and all things factored in, he rates as one of the game's very worst players over the last year. He's off to a 2-for-16 start with no RBI in five games this season, so the Rangers may want to start going to Robinson Chirinos more.
Arencibia to get bulk of starts with Soto out | 03/31/2014 10:52 AM
NewsJ.P. Arencibia will get the bulk of playing time at catcher for the Rangers in the early going.
Anthony Andro on Twitter
ImpactGeovany Soto is expected to miss around three months following knee surgery. Arencibia is not a good defensive catcher, but he swings a powerful bat and will be playing half of his games in a hitter-friendly park, so he could be a sneaky-good fantasy option.
Arencibia connects on grand slam in victory | 03/16/2014 10:14 PM
NewsJ.P. Arencibia belted a grand slam on Sunday, powering the Rangers to a 14-8 victory over the White Sox.
ImpactHis sixth inning blast off Zach Putnam was the first ball Arencibia has knocked over the boards this spring. He's still hitting a paltry .156/.182/.344 through 32 at-bats to this point, and is being thoroughly out-played by Robinson Chirinos.
Rangers finalize agreement with Arencibia | 12/10/2013 4:10 PM
NewsRangers signed C J.P. Arencibia to a one-year, $1.8 million contract.
ImpactFOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal passed along the contract details. The deal reportedly carries $300,000 in possible incentives. Arencibia was non-tendered by the Blue Jays last week after he batted just .194/.227/.365 this year, but the Rangers intend to have him back up Geovany Soto in 2014. He's unlikely to be relevant in mixed fantasy leagues.
Rangers reach agreement with J.P. Arencibia | 12/06/2013 12:39 PM
NewsEvan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports that the Rangers have reached an agreement with J.P. Arencibia.
Evan Grant on Twitter
ImpactFOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported late Thursday that a deal was close, and now it appears a passed physical is all that it needs to be complete. The Blue Jays non-tendered the free-swinging Arencibia earlier this week, but he lands in a nice situation in Texas. He'll share time with Geovany Soto.
Rangers, Arencibia 'progressing towards deal' | 12/05/2013 11:50 PM
NewsFOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Rangers and J.P. Arencibia are "progressing towards a deal."
Ken Rosenthal on Twitter
ImpactThe particulars of the deal aren't yet known. The Rangers attempted to acquire Arencibia from the Blue Jays before the Jays non-tendered him earlier this week, so it's no surprise they didn't take much time to lock him up once he became a free agent. Arencibia is a one-trick pony who offers some power and little else, but he's not a bad guy to pair with Geovany Soto.
Rangers, Jays discussed deal for Arencibia | 12/04/2013 10:42 PM
NewsThe Rangers attempted to acquire J.P. Arencibia from the Blue Jays before the Jays non-tendered him, a source tells MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan.
ImpactIt stands to reason, then, that the Rangers will make a play for the 27-year-old now that he's a free agent. The catcher doesn't bring much defensively and owns a career .212 batting average, but he hit 21 home runs this past season and would be a nice power option off the bench for the Rangers. The team is also considering Kurt Suzuki as a potential backup to starting catcher Geovany Soto.
Heyman: Rangers could look at Arencibia | 12/04/2013 8:48 AM
NewsCBS Sports' Jon Heyman writes that the Rangers could consider signing J.P. Arencibia.
Jon Heyman on Twitter
ImpactArencibia was non-tendered on Monday after the Blue Jays were unable to find a taker via trade. While his projected salary in arbitration was too rich for his underwhelming production, someone will be willing to take a chance on his power bat. The Rangers are said to be considering signing Kurt Suzuki to use in a tandem with Geovany Soto.
J.P. Arencibia non-tendered by Blue Jays | 12/02/2013 11:32 PM
NewsBlue Jays non-tendered C J.P. Arencibia.
Ben Nicholson-Smith on Twitter
ImpactThe Jays tried to trade Arencibia after agreeing to terms with Dioner Navarro but were unable to find a partner. Arencibia put up a woeful .194/.227/.365 batting line in 2013 but has averaged over 20 homers the last three seasons. Someone will take a gamble on him due to his above-average pop for a catcher.
Blue Jays still talking Arencibia trade | 12/02/2013 4:14 PM
NewsFOX Sports' Jon Paul Morosi reports that the Blue Jays are still engaged in trade talks with at least one team regarding J.P. Arencibia.
Jon Paul Morosi on Twitter
ImpactThe Blue Jays inked Dioner Navarro to a two-year, $8 million contract on Monday, which effectively ended Arencibia's tenure with Toronto. Teams face an 11:59 p.m. deadline on Monday to tender contracts to their arbitration-eligible players, so the only question is whether the Blue Jays will find a taker in time. If not, he'll become a free agent.
Blue Jays working on J.P. Arencibia trades | 12/02/2013 10:44 AM
NewsAccording to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman, the Blue Jays are working on possible J.P. Arencibia trades.
Jon Heyman on Twitter
ImpactToronto signed free agent catcher Dioner Navarro to a two-year, $8 million contract on Monday and will use him as the everyday catcher going forward. Arencibia is a poor defender and owns a horrendous .258 career on-base percentage, but he possesses a decent power bat and is only 27 years old. The Blue Jays should be able to find a taker eventually.
Multiple teams interested in J.P. Arencibia | 11/13/2013 11:54 AM
NewsFOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that multiple teams have expressed interest in trading for Blue Jays catcher J.P. Arencibia.
ImpactThis news comes as a bit of a surprise, as Arencibia is coming off a terrible year in which he batted .194 with a .592 OPS. However, teams are apparently interested in his power. The 27-year-old is arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter. With a trade a legitimate possibility, the Blue Jays are currently monitoring the free agent market for a replacement at catcher.
J.P. Arencibia goes hitless in loss | 09/04/2013 6:33 PM
NewsJ.P. Arencibia went hitless in a fourth straight start Wednesday, dropping his average to .207.
ImpactArencibia tore it up this spring and in the first half of April, but he's been one of baseball's very worst players since and the Blue Jays must have serious reservations about going forward with him as their catcher in 2014. He currently has a .243 OBP and 131 strikeouts in 421 at-bats.
J.P. Arencibia goes deep in loss | 08/22/2013 7:53 PM
NewsJ.P. Arencibia belted a solo homer in Thursday's loss to the Yankees.
ImpactHis longball in the fifth inning was the only run the Blue Jays could muster off of Andy Pettitte. Arencibia has gone deep 19 times this season to go along with a .212 batting mark, so he's been just what fantasy owners should have expected.
Arencibia blasts 18th home run in Jays' loss | 08/13/2013 11:49 PM
NewsJ.P. Arencibia went 2-for-4 with a home run in the Blue Jays' loss on Tuesday.
ImpactThe homer was his first in nearly a month, his last coming on July 19. And what's more, Arencibia had gone 22 at-bats without even a hit -- dating back to July 29 -- before Tuesday's game. The home run was his 18th of the year, giving him 47 RBI.

ImpactArencibia hurt the knee while blocking a pitch during warm-ups prior to Wednesday's game. He required an MRI, and although the results haven't been revealed, it's certainly a good sign that he hasn't been placed on the DL yet.

NewsJ.P. Arencibia underwent an MRI on his sore right knee.
ImpactArencibia hurt the knee while blocking a pitch during warm-ups prior to Wednesday's game. The results of the exam are not yet known, but Arencibia was also evaluated by team doctors. It's possible he'll require a trip to the disabled list. Josh Thole will be the Blue Jays' primary catcher while Arencibia is out.
Arencibia (knee) scratched from lineup Wed. | 08/07/2013 3:50 PM
NewsJ.P. Arencibia was a last-minute scratch from Wednesday's lineup against the Mariners due to right knee soreness.

ImpactHe apparently hurt himself while catching a pre-game bullpen session. Josh Thole replaced him in the lineup.
Arencibia hitless in loss to Angels | 08/02/2013 1:02 AM
NewsJ.P. Arencibia was hitless in three at-bats in Thursday's loss to the Angels.
ImpactArencibia has just one hit in his last seven games, dropping his batting average down to .216 for the year. Meanwhile, he has just two home runs over his last 32 games. There's little reason to keep him around in single-catcher standard mixed fantasy leagues right now.
Arencibia homers in loss to Orioles | 07/12/2013 9:53 PM
NewsJ.P. Arencibia went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run Friday against the Orioles.
ImpactThe home run was his first since way back on June 18. It's difficult to use Arencibia in fantasy leagues when he isn't producing in the power department. It's the only thing he has going for him.

Arencibia doubles, homers in win over Rockies | 06/18/2013 9:46 PM
NewsJ.P. Arencibia went 3-for-4 with a double and a home run as the Blue Jays beat the Rockies on Tuesday.
ImpactThe homer was Arencibia's third in four games and his 15th on the season. His .222/.243/.461 line is indicative of Arencibia's game -- he doesn't hit for average, he doesn't walk, but when he makes contact it goes a long way.
J.P. Arencibia really scuffling at the plate | 06/14/2013 10:27 AM
NewsJ.P. Arencibia is batting just .067/.122/.067 with a 3/17 BB/K ratio over his last 11 games.
ImpactThe cold streak has dropped his season batting line to an ugly .211/.233/.417. Of course, Arencibia has also hit 12 homers this season, and a low average with some home run pop was all fantasy owners were hoping for. He's not a bad second catcher in fantasy leagues but is a pretty dreadful real-life hitter.
J.P. Arencibia goes hitless in loss | 06/05/2013 1:09 AM
NewsJ.P. Arencibia went 0-for-3 and struck out twice Tuesday against the Giants.
ImpactArencibia's 20:1 K:BB ratio was kind of cute when he homering twice per week, but not so much anymore. He's batting .222, his OBP stands at .245 and his slugging percentage has dropped from .616 in late April to .449 now. It's past time the Jays stop batting him fifth.
Arencibia has HR, four RBI in win over O's | 05/23/2013 10:45 PM
NewsJ.P. Arencibia went 2-for-5 with a home run and four RBI in Thursday's 12-6 win over the Orioles.
ImpactArencibia delivered an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth, a go-ahead two-run homer in the fifth and an RBI ground out in the eighth. While the 27-year-old backstop is only hitting .230 with a .244 on-base percentage, he has 11 home runs to go along with 24 RBI. He's on pace to set career-highs in both categories.
Arencibia hits 10th homer as Jays beat Giants | 05/15/2013 11:05 PM
NewsJ.P. Arencibia hit his 10th home run Wednesday in the Blue Jays' 11-3 win over the Giants.
ImpactArencibia has been doing his usual Arencibia thing this year, hitting for power but at the expense of average. The catcher now has 20 RBI and a .236 batting mark to go with his 10 homers. His power and ability to drive in runs in the Blue Jays' order make him a solid fantasy play.
J.P. Arencibia's homer propels Jays in win | 05/06/2013 11:05 PM
NewsJ.P. Arencibia hit a two-run homer off Fernando Rodney in the top of the ninth to complete the Jays' comeback in an 8-7 win over the Rays on Monday.
ImpactThe Jays fell behind 7-0 in the third, but they went on to score three in the fourth, two in the sixth, one in the eighth and two in the ninth to win it. Arencibia's homer, on a fastball left over the plate, was his ninth of the year. In Rodney's defense, there's no way a guy with a 42/2 K/BB ratio would have chased a pitch a few inches outside.
J.P. Arencibia getting another off-day Monday | 05/06/2013 4:11 PM
NewsJ.P. Arencibia is not in Monday evening's lineup against the Rays.
Blue Jays on Twitter
ImpactIt's Arencibia's second off-day in three games, but he isn't known to be hurt. Asked why he was sitting, he responded with a curt "ask Gibby," as in manager John Gibbons. Arencibia's eight home runs are second amongst catchers.
Arencibia hitless in three at-bats Friday | 05/03/2013 9:44 PM
NewsJ.P. Arencibia went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in a loss to the Mariners on Friday.
ImpactArencibia has just three hits in his last 23 at-bats, dropping his batting average down to .239 for the year. That's closer to what we were expecting coming into the year, but he should still be a useful option in most mixed leagues as long as the power continues.
J.P. Arencibia hits AL-leading 8th HR in win | 04/24/2013 4:21 PM
NewsJ.P. Arencibia hit his AL-high eighth homer as part of a 3-for-5 day as the Blue Jays beat the Orioles 6-5 in 11 innings Wednesday.
ImpactA Maicer Izturis bases-loaded walk scored the go-ahead run in the 11th. Along with his two-run homer today, Arencibia collected his sixth double. He has a crazy 32/2 K/BB ratio in 82 at-bats, but when he's making contact, he's hitting the ball a long way.
Arencibia hits seventh homer, Jays top Yanks | 04/21/2013 4:24 PM
NewsJ.P. Arencibia slugged his seventh home run of the season in Sunday's 8-4 victory over the Yankees.
ImpactArencibia also doubled, finishing 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. The 27-year-old has a weak .250 batting average and .260 on-base percentage in 18 games this season, but his power numbers have been excellent. He should carry some amount of relevance in standard mixed fantasy leagues all season.
Arencibia remains hot, hitting fifth home run | 04/16/2013 10:15 PM
NewsJ.P. Arencibia went 2-for-4 with his fifth home run of the season Tuesday.
ImpactArencibia's best attribute has always been his power, and it's been on full display in the early going. His average is still respectable as well, but that's not likely to last. But the power is very real, and for that alone he deserves to be owned in deep mixed leagues.
J.P. Arencibia knocks in three in win | 04/10/2013 7:26 PM
NewsJ.P. Arencibia went 2-for-5 and delivered a go-ahead three-run double in the seventh as the Blue Jays beat the Tigers 8-6 on Wednesday.
ImpactArencibia got a little revenge today after Don Kelly went over the wall in left field to rob him over a homer on Tuesday. He has three homers, four doubles and seven RBI through eight games.
J.P. Arencibia homers twice in victory | 04/04/2013 10:52 PM
NewsJ.P. Arencibia went 3-for-4 with a pair of solo homers in leading the Blue Jays to a 10-8 win over the Indians on Thursday.
ImpactArencibia was on fire offensively all spring, with the caveat that free swingers have it a bit easier in March than they do in April and beyond. He should put up some of the best power numbers among major league catchers this season, but it remains to be seen whether he'll improve much on his .221 career average. .240 is probably within reach.
Arencibia to catch Dickey on Opening Day | 04/02/2013 10:07 AM
NewsJ.P. Arencibia will catch R.A. Dickey in Tuesday's season opener.
Enrique Rojas on Twitter
ImpactThere was some speculation that Henry Blanco would serve as Dickey's personal catcher this season, but Arencibia has found a comfort level with the knuckleballer in recent weeks, including catching both of his starts during the World Baseball Classic. There's still a chance that things could change down the road, but this arrangement is good news for his fantasy value, as he won't have to sit every fifth day as originally thought.
Arencibia's homer powers Blue Jays to win | 03/29/2013 9:25 PM
NewsJ.P. Arencibia blasted a solo homer off Phillippe Aumont on Friday, accounting for all of the offensive festivities in a 1-0 victory over the Phillies.
ImpactIt was his only hit in three trips on the night. Arencibia has absolutely murdered the ball during the Grapefruit League season, hitting .439/.477/.902 with five homers and 13 RBI. While he's never going to hit for a high average, he has tremendous power potential and is certainly worth a look in two catcher formats.
J.P. Arencibia homers twice for Jays | 03/25/2013 4:19 PM
NewsStaying red hot, J.P. Arencibia went 3-for-4 with two homers and five RBI as the Phillies blasted the Blue jays 13-4 on Monday.
ImpactDespite missing time and not playing much in the WBC, Arencibia is 16-for-33 with four homers and three doubles in Blue Jays camp. He has a flawed approach at the plate, and he's never going to hit for a big average in the regular season. Still, 25 homers and 75 RBI isn't completely out of reach.
J.P. Arencibia knocks in three runs | 03/20/2013 5:29 PM
NewsJ.P. Arencibia went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI versus the Orioles on Wednesday.
ImpactArencibia didn't play much in the WBC, but it seems like he still has his offensive timing. He's 10-for-23 in his nine games with the Blue Jays.
Arencibia to play for Team USA in WBC | 01/15/2013 1:05 PM
NewsJ.P. Arencibia will play for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic.
