Felix Doubront fans three Orioles | 03/02/2014 5:04 PM
NewsFelix Doubront struck out three in two scoreless innings versus the Orioles on Sunday.
ImpactThe Red Sox appear much happier with Doubront's conditioning this spring than they were when he showed up a year ago. He spent the postseason in the pen, but he'll almost certainly be the team's fifth starter to open this year.
Red Sox hope Doubront shows up in shape | 01/31/2014 8:53 AM
NewsScott Lauber of the Boston Herald reports that the Red Sox have "closely monitored" Felix Doubront's offseason conditioning program this winter.
ImpactThey've also "encouraged him to return to the U.S. earlier than usual" after Doubront went back to his native Venezuela after the World Series. The left-hander has shown up to spring training out of shape two of the last three years, and he can't afford to do so again with a rotation spot on the line. Lauber writes that "a strong spring from Doubront could compel the Red Sox to pull the trigger on a trade involving either Ryan Dempster or Jake Peavy."
Red Sox to carry Doubront on ALDS roster | 10/03/2013 3:10 PM
NewsThe Red Sox are planning to carry Felix Doubront over Matt Thornton for the final spot in their ALDS roster, a source told CSNNE.com's Sean McAdam.
Sean McAdam on twitter
ImpactThornton is the proven reliever, but he's given up 22 hits and struck out just nine in 15 1/3 innings since coming over from the White Sox. The Red Sox will try Doubront instead and hope that his success starting carries over to the pen. They'll have three left-handed relievers in all, with Craig Breslow and Franklin Morales also occupying spots.

NewsFelix Doubront is slated to rejoin the Red Sox starting rotation next weekend against the Blue Jays.
Joe McDonald on Twitter
ImpactDoubront will throw a side session on Sunday and a simulated game on Tuesday before returning to take on the Jays. Before his layoff, Doubront failed to make it out of the fourth inning in each of his previous two starts, and struggled mightily with his command.
Felix Doubront likely to start next week | 09/11/2013 9:08 PM
NewsFelix Doubront will rejoin the Red Sox' rotation, possibly as early as next week.
ImpactDoubront was skipped this week with Clay Buchholz back from the disabled list. The young left-hander hasn't been removed from the rotation, though, and it sounds like the club could go to a modified six-man rotation over the final weeks. "He'll get another start," said manager John Farrell. "We've just skipped him in this turn in the rotation. He'll get some side work with (pitching coach) Juan (Nieves). We have yet to determine when he's going to actually be inserted back into the rotation."

NewsThe Red Sox will skip Felix Doubront's next scheduled start.
Pete Abraham on Twitter
ImpactDoubront has logged just 3 2/3 innings in each of his last two starts, and struggled to find the strike zone consistently in each. While they haven't announced that Doubront is completely out of the rotation, that could very well be the case. Clay Buchholz is returning to start Tuesday's series opener against the Rays in Tampa Bay, and will be followed by Ryan Dempster and Jake Peavy.
Doubront atrocious, walks six in no-decision | 09/06/2013 11:11 PM
NewsFelix Doubront was atrocious in a no-decision against the Yankees on Friday, allowing six runs on three hits and six walks in just 3 2/3 innings.
ImpactDoubront struck out two on the evening, but his overall command was horrendous. Alfonso Soriano tagged him for a two-run blast in the first inning, and the Bombers tacked on pairs of runs on in the second and fourth before chasing him from the game. It's the second straight start in which he's failed to make it out of the fourth inning, which is certainly worrisome. He'll try to get back on track against the Rays in Tampa Bay on Thursday.
Doubront struggles in no-decision vs. ChiSox | 09/01/2013 6:54 PM
NewsFelix Doubront coughed up four runs on seven hits over 3 2/3 innings in a no-decision against the White Sox on Sunday.
ImpactHe struck out four and walked one. Boston persevered and won the game despite Doubront's stinker, mostly because the bullpen held Chicago to two runs over 5 1/3 relief innings. Doubront has walked only three batters over his last three starts, and his last two outings were stellar, so we aren't going to panic over one dud. The left-hander stands 10-6 with a 3.89 ERA.
Doubront strong again in win against Orioles | 08/27/2013 10:20 PM
NewsFelix Doubront allowed two runs over 6 2/3 innings in a win over the Orioles on Tuesday.
ImpactDoubront has now reeled off two good starts his last two times out. On Tuesday, he gave up just four hits and a walk while striking out seven batters. The lefty is now 10-6 with a 3.74 ERA on the season. He'll try to keep it going against a struggling White Sox offense on Sunday.
Felix Doubront goes eight for ninth win | 08/21/2013 6:57 PM
NewsFelix Doubront pitched eight innings of one-run ball in Boston's 12-1 drubbing of San Francisco on Wednesday.
ImpactThat's as many innings as he pitched in his previous two starts combines. Doubront, though, has been a much improved pitcher this season, even with his strikeout rate down some. He's currently 9-6 with a 3.79 ERA. He's allowed more than three earned runs once in his last 18 starts.
Doubront knocked around in loss to Yankees | 08/16/2013 11:14 PM

Doubront spins 7 shutout innings in victory | 08/04/2013 5:45 PM
NewsFelix Doubront spun seven shutout innings in Sunday's victory against the Diamondbacks.
ImpactHe struck out five, walked none and scattered five hits. Because of his stuff, Doubront has the ability to toss a gem every time he takes the mound. Since mid-June, he's allowed only 13 runs over nine starts. Consistency -- and elevated pitch counts -- have both been problems, but the left-hander nevertheless stands 8-5 with a solid 3.56 ERA and 1.37 WHIP.
Doubront allows three runs in loss to Rays | 07/24/2013 10:20 PM
NewsFelix Doubront allowed three runs in 6 2/3 innings against the Rays on Wednesday.
ImpactDoubront wasn't bad, as he gave up six hits and two walks while striking out five in the outing, but he was still saddled with his fourth loss. The lefty has been on a serious roll since mid-June, posting six quality starts and a 3-1 record over those seven starts. He'll take on the Mariners his next time out.
Felix Doubront wins third consecutive start | 07/19/2013 10:42 PM
NewsFelix Doubront won his third consecutive start on Friday, surrendering just two runs (one earned) on three hits over his 6 1/3 innings.
ImpactDoubront fanned five and issued three free passes on the night. After manufacturing an unearned run in the fourth inning, Chris Stewart's RBI double in the fifth was the extent of the damage against him. He's been brilliant in 12 starts since returning to the rotation on May 16, compiling a 2.59 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 63/30 K/BB ratio in 73 innings. He'll look to extend his winning streak on Wednesday against the Rays.
Dubront twirls seven frames of one-run ball | 07/11/2013 1:37 AM
NewsFelix Doubront twirled seven frames of one-run ball in a victory against the Mariners Wednesday.
ImpactHe struck out five, walked two and scattered five hits. Doubront has now won both July starts after waiting more than a month between victories after June 1. The left-hander isn't a finished product, but he enters the All-Star break 6-3 with a 3.91 ERA and 93 strikeouts in 99 innings.
Felix Doubront earns first win in a month | 07/06/2013 1:39 AM
NewsFelix Doubront pitched 6 2/3 innings of two-run ball in beating the Angels on Friday night.
ImpactThe win was Doubront's first since June 1, though he had turned in three quality starts since that date, including one in which he pitched eight scoreless innings against Tampa Bay. His ERA has dropped from 6.40 on May 8 to 4.84 on June 8 to 4.11 now.
Doubront fans six in no-decision against Jays | 06/29/2013 7:45 PM
NewsFelix Doubront allowed two runs in 6 1/3 innings of a no-decision against the Blue Jays on Saturday.
ImpactDoubront wasn't overly sharp, as he allowed five hits and three walks while striking out six. The start in a lot of ways mirrored Doubront's season, as the southpaw has a 4.22 ERA and 1.48 WHIP with 82 strikeouts in 85 1/3 innings. He'll start again Friday against the Angels in Anaheim.
Felix Doubront only lasts five Sunday | 06/23/2013 5:06 PM
NewsFelix Doubront permitted three runs -- two earned -- on four hits and four walks over five innings in a loss to the Tigers.
ImpactDoubront has worked on tweaking his mechanics in hopes that he'll have better control and be more efficient, but it didn't work in this one. Though he's pitched much better of late, the lefty still has a 4.33 ERA and 1.49 WHIP this season. He shouldn't be trusted against the red-hot Blue Jays at Fenway next weekend.
Doubront goes eight scoreless innings vs. TB | 06/18/2013 10:56 PM
NewsFelix Doubront fired eight scoreless innings, guiding the Red Sox to a 3-1 defeat of the Rays in the second half of Tuesday's doubleheader at Fenway Park.
ImpactThe Red Sox won the first game on Tuesday afternoon by a score of 5-1 and are now 2 1/2 games up in the American League East standings. Doubront was brilliant, needing only 93 pitches to work through his eight frames. He struck out six, issued no walks and gave up just three hits. The left-hander will take a 4.38 ERA into his next start in Detroit. We wouldn't expect a similar set of results there.
Doubront gives up four runs in no-decision | 06/14/2013 12:37 AM
NewsFelix Doubront permitted four runs -- three earned -- on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings in Baltimore on Thursday.
ImpactHe struck out five and walked one in the no-decision. Baltimore's offense ground Doubront for 103 pitches before his premature departure. The southpaw will bring a 4.91 ERA into a start against the Rays next week.
Doubront goes six innings in loss to Angels | 06/08/2013 5:09 PM
NewsFelix Doubront gave up three runs in six innings Saturday in a loss to the Angels.
ImpactDoubront fanned two and walked a pair in the loss. He allowed one run in the second inning and two more in the third, but managed to hold the Angels off the board the rest of the way. While it would be nice to see him be more efficient and work further into games, he has allowed three earned runs or fewer in each of his last five starts. The southpaw will bring a 4.84 ERA into a start against the Orioles next week.

Felix Doubront earns win over Yankees | 06/01/2013 11:09 PM
NewsFelix Doubront limited the Yankees to one run in six innings and struck out six in a victory Saturday.
ImpactDoubront was at 48 pitches after two innings, but the Yankees couldn't push across any of their five baserunners in those frames. Doubront settled down afterwards, throwing 55 pitches over his last four innings. He's walking too many batters to pitch deep into games and his fluctuating velocity is a cause for concern, but he's allowed three earned runs or fewer in eight of nine starts on the season.
Doubront takes loss despite quality start | 05/21/2013 11:59 PM
NewsFelix Doubront allowed two runs over six innings but took the loss Tuesday as the White Sox topped the Red Sox.
ImpactDoubront made one mistake that Jeff Keppinger deposited into the seats for a two-run homer, but the pitch was enough to saddle Doubront with the loss. He's now got a 5.61 ERA and 1.73 WHIP on the year despite a 3-2 record. He'll start again Sunday against the Indians.
Felix Doubront strikes out seven Rays | 05/16/2013 11:11 PM
NewsMaking his first start in 13 days, Felix Doubront pitched around six walks to allow two runs in five innings Thursday against the Rays.
ImpactDoubront struck out seven and allowed three hits. The Red Sox's concern with Doubront is the way his velocity has dropped while working from the stretch. That was still a problem tonight, but he was effective anyway. He should remain in the rotation next week.

ImpactAllen Webster started in Doubront's place on Wednesday and was rocked for eight runs over just 1 2/3 frames. The lefty relieved him and didn't fare well, either, allowing six runs and 11 hits over 5 1/3 innings, but the Sox aren't ready to give up on him as a starter. Doubront could be pushed back, though, with Boston having an off day next Monday.

Doubront admits he's struggled with velocity | 05/04/2013 8:45 AM
NewsFelix Doubront confirmed to the Boston Globe the he's struggled with his velocity this season.
Impact"You want a little bit more and it's not there," Doubront said. "Sometimes I don't have that power to get swing and misses and go in hard on hitters." Doubront is coming of a career-high 161 innings in 2012, but insists he's not dealing with a physical issue. He's been consistently throwing 88-89 mph this year and hasn't been effective with his secondary pitches. The Red Sox have Allen Webster waiting in the minors if he continues to struggle. Doubront has a 5.67 ERA in five starts.

NewsFelix Doubront picked up his third straight victory on Saturday, limiting the Astros to three runs on four hits and four walks over 6 2/3 innings of work.
ImpactDoubront also matched his season high by strikeout out eight. The Astros had him on the ropes early on, scratching out a pair of runs in the first inning and loading the bases with one out, but he showed great poise to pitch out of the jam and settled in beautifully after that. He's off to a solid start to the season, posting a 3-0 record, 4.24 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 29/13 K/BB ratio through 23 1/3 innings. He'll face a much more difficult assignment next time out when he does battle against the Rangers in Arlington on Friday.

NewsFelix Doubront earned a win after allowing three runs in 6 2/3 innings against the A's on Monday.
ImpactBecause of Sunday's doubleheader tiring out the bullpen, Doubront was allowed to start the seventh at 107 pitches tonight. It ended up working out, as Doubront retired two more batters on six pitches before coming out. Doubront allowed three hits, walked five and struck out eight in moving to 2-0.
Felix Doubront whiffs seven | 04/16/2013 11:23 PM
NewsFelix Doubront struck out seven but lasted just five innings Tuesday, allowing two runs on four hits and four walks in a 7-2 win over the Indians.
ImpactWorking on 10 days' rest, Doubront had his swing-and-miss stuff working, but he was also a little wild. The southpaw has struck out 13 over his first 10 innings this season, but it's come along with a pedestrian 4.50 ERA and 1.70 WHIP. He'll have to exhibit better control in order to avoid being a strikeout-only guy in fantasy leagues.

NewsFelix Doubront had mediocre results in his season debut, allowing three runs on nine hits over 5 2/3 innings of work against the Blue Jays on Friday.
ImpactHe racked up six strikeouts on the evening without walking a batter. Most of the damage came in the fifth inning where Mark DeRosa ripped a solo homer and Jose Reyes added an RBI double. He'll look for better results next time out when he takes on the Orioles in Boston on Thursday.
Felix Doubront strikes out six in win | 03/30/2013 4:53 PM
NewsFelix Doubront struck out six in five scoreless innings in the Red Sox's 4-2 win over the Twins on Saturday.
ImpactAfter experiencing some shoulder soreness early in camp, Doubront rebounded to go 2-2 with a 3.00 ERA in five starts. Last year's terrific strikeout rate makes him an intriguing breakout candidate in 2013. Still, we don't see him as worthy of a spot in mixed-league rotations initially.
Doubront pitches well in victory over Twins | 03/15/2013 10:28 PM
NewsFelix Doubront pitched extremely well in Friday's victory over the Twins, scattering two hits and a walk over four scoreless innings.
ImpactDoubront racked up four strikeouts along the way in the impressive outing. The young lefty has posted a 2.08 ERA and 11/4 K/BB ratio through 8 2/3 innings this spring, and offers significant upside in the later rounds of fantasy drafts with his ability to generate strikeouts.
Felix Doubront a mixed bag on Saturday | 03/09/2013 10:09 PM
NewsFelix Doubront allowed two runs but struck out five in his three innings Saturday.
ImpactDoubront is a good bet to make the Red Sox rotation after making 29 starts in his rookie year. He won 11 games in 2012, but a 4.86 ERA and 1.45 WHIP take some shine off the 25-year-old lefty. If he can ever get the control issues figured out he'd be an enticing fantasy option for his stikeout ability -- Doubront fanned 167 in 161 innings last season.

NewsFelix Doubront pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings against the Rays in his spring debut Monday.

NewsFelix Doubront (shoulder) has been cleared to start next Monday after another successful simulated game Wednesday.

ImpactDoubront is getting a late start this spring after experiencing some shoulder weakness upon arriving to camp. However, assuming all goes well with his side sessions this week, the plan calls for him to progress to throwing live batting practice next Monday. Still, he remains a risky proposition coming off a career-high 161 innings last year and should be monitored closely this spring.

ImpactDoubront is coming off a career-high 161 innings from a season ago, and is already experiencing some weakness in his throwing shoulder early in spring camp. As long as he's healthy, Doubront possesses strong strikeout ability and could be a solid sleeper in the later rounds of fantasy drafts.

The 25-year-old southpaw said his forearm was a bit tight during the offseason, but that his shoulder wasn't an issue. The hope right now is that a little rest will do the trick, but coming off a career-high 161 innings last season, it's a situation that should be monitored.

ImpactManager John Farrell stressed that holding the pitchers back a bit is only precautionary and they don't expect it to be a big deal. It's worth noting, though, particularly in Doubront's case, after he went from throwing 87 2/3 innings in 2011 to 161 this past season.
Doubront won't be on innings-limit in 2013 | 02/02/2013 10:11 AM
NewsRed Sox manager John Farrell said he doesn't expect Felix Doubront to experience any residual effects from his increased workload in 2012.
Impact"There shouldn't be anything that would indicate we've got to be conscious of one specific thing," said Farrell. "He'll be monitored like every other starting pitcher, but I don't think there's anything that says, just because of that increase in innings, you've got to be overly conscious of anything." After missing the majority of 2011 due to injury, Doubront pitched a career-high 161 innings last season and admitted to being overworked down the stretch. However, the 25-year-old didn't exhibit any physical problems other than routine fatigue. The Red Sox are not expected to put him on an innings-limit and are hoping he can build on his first full season by becoming a workhorse No. 4 starter.
