NewsThe Red Sox have traded left-hander Felix Doubront to the Chicago Cubs for a player to be named later.
ImpactDoubront said earlier this week that he wanted to be traded if Boston didn't plan to give him his starting job back, and he then went out and gave up six runs on six hits over 2/3 of an inning in relief on July 28. It's unclear if Doubront will get a chance to start with Chicago, as Kyle Hendricks and Tsuyoshi Wada ave pitched well lately.

Pete Abraham on Twitter
ImpactHe's expected to get another start next week against the Cubs, but that's merely to give the other starters some extra rest. Felix Doubront gives up three runs to A's | 06/21/2014 1:46 AM
NewsFelix Doubront overcame a three-run first to hold the A's scoreless for the next 3 2/3 innings Friday in his return from the disabled list.
ImpactDoubront didn't allow a hit after Josh Donaldson's three-run homer in the first, but that was as much due to luck as anyway. He wasn't all that sharp, and his velocity was disappointing, as he typically worked below 90 mph. If he's no better next time, the Red Sox should strongly consider sending him to the pen.
Red Sox activate Doubront from 15-day DL | 06/20/2014 7:21 PM
NewsRed Sox activated LHP Felix Doubront from the 15-day disabled list.
ImpactDoubront, out for about a month with a left shoulder strain, will return to start in the place of the suspended Brandon Workman on Friday against the Athletics. It's unclear if he'll remain in the rotation moving forward. The southpaw had a 5.12 ERA and 31/19 K/BB ratio in 45 2/3 innings over nine starts prior to going on the DL.

NewsFelix Doubront (shoulder) will start on Friday against the Athletics.
Tim Britton on Twitter
ImpactHe's taking the turn for Brandon Workman, who is serving a six-game suspension. It's possible Doubront will be sent to the bullpen after Friday's outing, as both Workman and Rubby De La Rosa are pitching well. Fantasy owners should steer clear of him against the A's.

NewsFelix Doubront (shoulder) struck out 10 and didn't allow a hit over five innings in a rehab start with Triple-A Pawtucket Sunday.
Jeff Levering on Twitter
ImpactDoubront walked four, needing 93 pitches to cover the five frames. Still, it has to be considered a positive showing for the left-hander in what is expected to be his final rehab start. Brandon Workman or Rubby De La Rosa are likely to be bumped from the rotation later this week to make room for Doubront.
Felix Doubront to make one more rehab start | 06/10/2014 9:33 PM
NewsFelix Doubront's (shoulder) rehab start with Triple-A Pawtucket on Sunday is expected to be his last.
ImpactDoubront gave up six hits and two runs over 4 2/3 innings in his second rehab outing Tuesday, getting his pitch count up to 75. Neither stat line has been impressive, but the Red Sox have been pleased with how the lefty has looked. "The more important thing is watching him in his bullpens between the two outings and leading up to it, and hearing him talk about how he feels the ball is coming out of his hand," said manager John Farrell. "Clearly, there's improvement being made. But we know our plan is to have him go one more start with Pawtucket to have him get up and down six different times, and that will be five days from now."
Felix Doubront to make two more rehab starts | 06/08/2014 9:14 AM
NewsFelix Doubront (shoulder) will make at least two more rehab starts.
ImpactDoubront allowed two runs but didn't walk anyone over four innings at Double-A Portland on Thursday. He'll go five frames on Tuesday and six on Sunday at Triple-A Pawtucket before being re-evaluated. The lefty should be activated after that if all goes well, but it's probably not a given that he rejoins the big league rotation.

NewsFelix Doubront (shoulder) is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment Thursday at Double-A Portland.

Doubront (shoulder) throws bullpen session | 06/02/2014 9:48 PM
NewsFelix Doubront threw a bullpen session on Monday.
ImpactDoubront's been out since May 21 with a left shoulder strain. While a date hasn't been set for Doubront to begin a rehab assignment, manager John Farrell indicated that they'll continue to ramp up the number of pitches for the lefty. "We'll start to incorporate some simulated innings before we get him out on a date for a rehab assignment," Farrell said. Before the injury, Doubront was sporting an ERA north of 5.00, and it remains to be seen whether he'll be pitching in the rotation or bullpen once he returns.
Felix Doubront (shoulder) throws long-toss | 05/29/2014 7:03 PM
NewsFelix Doubront (shoulder) is scheduled to throw long-toss Thursday.
ImpactDoubront landed on the DL a week ago with a left shoulder strain, an ailment that came up as a result of him bumping his shoulder on a car door. He shouldn't be out long, but it's not a given that the lefty will rejoin the rotation once healthy.
Doubront says he bumped shoulder on car door | 05/21/2014 4:20 PM
NewsFelix Doubront told the Red Sox medical staff that he bumped his left shoulder on a car door Monday.
Nick Cafardo on Twitter
ImpactThat might help explain his feeling of shoulder weakness (and subsequent dip in velocity) in Tuesday's five-run, four-inning thrashing by the Blue Jays. Doubront was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with what's being termed a "left shoulder strain" -- though it sounds like it might just be a contusion. Allen Webster, Brandon Workman, and Rubby De La Rosa are the candidates to fill Boston's vacant rotation spot.
Felix Doubront (shoulder) placed on DL | 05/21/2014 2:40 PM
NewsRed Sox placed LHP Felix Doubront on the 15-day disabled list with a left shoulder strain.
ImpactThe Red Sox haven't revealed exactly what Doubront's MRI showed, but obviously it was bad enough that he's going to miss at least a couple weeks. More information a potential timetable should be available later Wednesday. The Red Sox have not yet announced who will take Doubront's spot in the rotation, but Allen Webster, Brandon Workman and Rubby De La Rosa are all candidates.

NewsFelix Doubront took the loss, allowing five runs over four innings against the Blue Jays on Tuesday.
ImpactDoubront allowed five hits, including two home runs, while walking three and striking out two. The left-hander departed early with what was described as left shoulder fatigue. If Doubront requires a stint on the disabled list, he'll do so with a 5.12 ERA, 1.55 WHIP, and 31/19 K/BB ratio. His next start, against the Rays on the road, could be in jeopardy at the very least.
Doubront (shoulder) to under MRI Wednesday | 05/20/2014 10:47 PM
NewsFelix Doubront (shoulder) will undergo an MRI Wednesday.
Scott Lauber on Twitter
ImpactDoubront was pulled from Tuesday's start because he was feeling a "restriction" in his left shoulder that was affecting his arm speed. Even if the MRI comes back clean, it would seem that a trip to the disabled list would still be a possibility. The southpaw holds a 5.12 ERA over nine starts this season.

NewsFelix Doubront left Tuesday's start against the Blue Jays with left shoulder fatigue.

ImpactDoubront was pulled from the outing in the fifth inning after summoning the trainer to the mound. It's not clear at this point if an MRI will be performed, but a trip to the disabled list would seem to be a distinct possibility. Doubront allowed four runs on five hits and three walks before exiting Tuesday.
Felix Doubront exits with apparent injury | 05/20/2014 8:33 PM
NewsFelix Doubront left Tuesday's start versus the Blue Jays in the fifth inning with an apparent injury.
Sean McAdam on Twitter
ImpactHe called the trainer to the mound after allowing back-to-back doubles and eventually walked off the field and into the clubhouse. Doubront probably wasn't going to be in much longer, having allowed four runs on five hits and three walks before exiting with a runner on second. The Red Sox should update his status shortly.
Felix Doubront limits Twins to one run | 05/14/2014 11:52 PM
NewsFelix Doubront yielded one run in 6 1/3 innings Wednesday in a win over Minnesota.
ImpactDoubront was a little shaky early, but he retired nine straight in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings before getting into trouble and getting pulled in the seventh. Blake Burdenhop bailed him out then, stranding both runners he inherited. Doubront's win was his first since his season debut back on April 3.

ImpactDoubront was originally slated to pitch Tuesday, but he has flip-flopped with Jake Peavy in the starting rotation. The southpaw allowed one run over 5 1/3 innings in his last start, but owns a 5.09 ERA and 1.56 WHIP on the year.
Doubront limits Reds to one run over 5 1/3 IP | 05/06/2014 11:23 PM
NewsFelix Doubront allowed one run over 5 1/3 innings of a no-decision against the Reds on Tuesday.
ImpactDoubront pitched into and out of trouble all evening, giving up five hits and three walks while striking out three. The left-hander exited with the lead and a chance to improve to 2-3, but his bullpen couldn't hold the lead. Doubront takes a 5.09 ERA and 1.56 WHIP into his Tuesday start at the Twins.
Felix Doubront gives up four runs to Rays | 05/01/2014 11:18 PM
NewsFelix Doubront yielded four runs -- three earned -- in six innings Friday against the Rays.
ImpactDoubront gave up two bombs, one of them coming after the left side of an infield failed to communicate and completely blew a routine popup (at least it was ruled an error on Will Middlebrooks instead of a ridiculous double for Evan Longoria). Apart from those pitches, he was quite good; he allowed just three other hits, walked one and struck out five. He left in line for the victory, but Junichi Tazawa blew the lead in the eighth.
Felix Doubront to remain in Boston rotation | 04/25/2014 5:56 PM
NewsRed Sox manager John Farrell said Friday that Felix Doubront will remain in the team's rotation.
Pete Abraham on Twitter
ImpactFor now, anyway. Doubront holds a 6.00 ERA through his first five starts this season and has twice failed to get through three innings. His leash isn't very long.
Doubront takes third loss in ugly game vs NYY | 04/24/2014 11:19 PM
NewsFelix Doubront took his third loss of the season after allowing seven runs (three earned) in 2 2/3 innings in Thursday's start against the Yankees.
ImpactAs his line shows, Doubront's defense wasn't any help, committing five errors. But Doubront was wild, literally and figuratively. Along with uncorking two wild pitches and one passed ball, Doubront allowed six hits, walked two, and struck out one. The lefty has flashed some talent at times, but has been far too inconsistent over 382 2/3 career innings. He'll look to put together a quality outing against the Rays next week.
Felix Doubront holds Orioles to two runs | 04/19/2014 4:53 PM
NewsFelix Doubront pitched 6 2/3 innings of two-run ball in a no-decision against the Orioles on Saturday.
ImpactDoubront thought he had a strikeout to finish the seventh, going to far as to jump off the mound. However, the pitch was ruled a ball and Doubront ended up walking Nick Markakis, which got him lifted from the game and cost him a win. The Red Sox went on to break a 2-2 tie with two runs in the bottom of the seventh and prevailed 4-2. That was too late for Doubront, though.
Doubront pitches decently in loss to Yankees | 04/13/2014 11:16 PM
NewsFelix Doubront pitched decently in Sunday's loss to the Yankees, allowing three runs on seven hits over 6 2/3 innings of work.
ImpactDoubront walked three while striking out two on the evening. Most of the damage came early on, when Carlos Beltran blasted a two-run homer in the third inning. Through three starts, he now sits at 1-2 with a 6.75 ERA, 1.77 WHIP and 8/7 K/BB ratio. If he continues to struggle, Chris Capuano is lurking in the bullpen and could be given a shot to start. Doubront will look to right the ship on Saturday against the Orioles.
Doubront takes the loss against the Rangers | 04/08/2014 9:24 PM
NewsFelix Doubront was ineffective, taking the loss after allowing five runs in 2 2/3 innings in Tuesday's start against the Rangers.
ImpactDoubront allowed six hits and three walks while striking out two. The lefty wasn't very effective as a part of the Red Sox rotation in 2012-13, posting a 4.59 ERA over 56 starts and two relief appearances. It's tough to expect him to be any better this season. At any rate, he'll get the Yankees his next time out on Sunday.
Felix Doubront gives up three runs in win | 04/03/2014 10:19 PM
NewsFelix Doubront pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed three runs Thursday in a win over the Orioles.
ImpactThe last run came after he exited with one out and a man on first in the sixth. Doubront was effective apart from the fourth, when he allowed two run-scoring hits with two outs. He struck out four and walked one. Next up for him is a home start against Texas.
Felix Doubront combines on shutout | 03/28/2014 4:13 PM
NewsFelix Doubront scattered seven hits over five innings and combined with four relievers on a shutout of the Twins on Friday.
ImpactDoubront also walked two, but he was able to pitch his way out of trouble with his seven strikeouts. He wasn't nearly as sharp in the second half of the spring as he was in the first, so we have pretty modest expectations for him initially. He likely is worth using in AL-only leagues, though.
Felix Doubront gives up eight runs in loss | 03/23/2014 5:44 PM
NewsFelix Doubront was lit up for eight runs and 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings Sunday in a loss to the Rays.
ImpactDoubront's second straight rough outing included one pitch completely spiked into the ground, resulting in a balk. Doubront missed enough bats to strike out six batters, but the Rays made plenty of quality contact, too, collecting a homer and four doubles against him. The Red Sox were probably thinking this could be a breakthrough season for Doubront after he showed up in great shape and looked strong in his first couple of outings. Inconsistency has always troubled him, though.
Felix Doubront pounded for seven runs | 03/18/2014 4:34 PM
NewsFelix Doubront was tagged for seven runs in 3 2/3 innings by the Yankees on Tuesday.
ImpactSo much for Doubront's excellent spring: he had pitched six scoreless innings, with just three hits and no walks allowed, coming into this one. He admitted to a bit of a dead arm afterwards, which isn't unusual for this time of the spring. It sounds like he'll stay on his normal schedule.

Felix Doubront fans three Orioles | 03/02/2014 5:04 PM
NewsFelix Doubront struck out three in two scoreless innings versus the Orioles on Sunday.
ImpactThe Red Sox appear much happier with Doubront's conditioning this spring than they were when he showed up a year ago. He spent the postseason in the pen, but he'll almost certainly be the team's fifth starter to open this year.
Red Sox hope Doubront shows up in shape | 01/31/2014 8:53 AM
NewsScott Lauber of the Boston Herald reports that the Red Sox have "closely monitored" Felix Doubront's offseason conditioning program this winter.
ImpactThey've also "encouraged him to return to the U.S. earlier than usual" after Doubront went back to his native Venezuela after the World Series. The left-hander has shown up to spring training out of shape two of the last three years, and he can't afford to do so again with a rotation spot on the line. Lauber writes that "a strong spring from Doubront could compel the Red Sox to pull the trigger on a trade involving either Ryan Dempster or Jake Peavy."
Red Sox to carry Doubront on ALDS roster | 10/03/2013 3:10 PM
NewsThe Red Sox are planning to carry Felix Doubront over Matt Thornton for the final spot in their ALDS roster, a source told CSNNE.com's Sean McAdam.
Sean McAdam on twitter
ImpactThornton is the proven reliever, but he's given up 22 hits and struck out just nine in 15 1/3 innings since coming over from the White Sox. The Red Sox will try Doubront instead and hope that his success starting carries over to the pen. They'll have three left-handed relievers in all, with Craig Breslow and Franklin Morales also occupying spots.

Felix Doubront likely to start next week | 09/11/2013 9:08 PM
NewsFelix Doubront will rejoin the Red Sox' rotation, possibly as early as next week.
ImpactDoubront was skipped this week with Clay Buchholz back from the disabled list. The young left-hander hasn't been removed from the rotation, though, and it sounds like the club could go to a modified six-man rotation over the final weeks. "He'll get another start," said manager John Farrell. "We've just skipped him in this turn in the rotation. He'll get some side work with (pitching coach) Juan (Nieves). We have yet to determine when he's going to actually be inserted back into the rotation."

ImpactDoubront has logged just 3 2/3 innings in each of his last two starts, and struggled to find the strike zone consistently in each. While they haven't announced that Doubront is completely out of the rotation, that could very well be the case. Clay Buchholz is returning to start Tuesday's series opener against the Rays in Tampa Bay, and will be followed by Ryan Dempster and Jake Peavy.
Doubront atrocious, walks six in no-decision | 09/06/2013 11:11 PM
NewsFelix Doubront was atrocious in a no-decision against the Yankees on Friday, allowing six runs on three hits and six walks in just 3 2/3 innings.
ImpactDoubront struck out two on the evening, but his overall command was horrendous. Alfonso Soriano tagged him for a two-run blast in the first inning, and the Bombers tacked on pairs of runs on in the second and fourth before chasing him from the game. It's the second straight start in which he's failed to make it out of the fourth inning, which is certainly worrisome. He'll try to get back on track against the Rays in Tampa Bay on Thursday.
Doubront struggles in no-decision vs. ChiSox | 09/01/2013 6:54 PM
NewsFelix Doubront coughed up four runs on seven hits over 3 2/3 innings in a no-decision against the White Sox on Sunday.
ImpactHe struck out four and walked one. Boston persevered and won the game despite Doubront's stinker, mostly because the bullpen held Chicago to two runs over 5 1/3 relief innings. Doubront has walked only three batters over his last three starts, and his last two outings were stellar, so we aren't going to panic over one dud. The left-hander stands 10-6 with a 3.89 ERA.
Doubront strong again in win against Orioles | 08/27/2013 10:20 PM
NewsFelix Doubront allowed two runs over 6 2/3 innings in a win over the Orioles on Tuesday.
ImpactDoubront has now reeled off two good starts his last two times out. On Tuesday, he gave up just four hits and a walk while striking out seven batters. The lefty is now 10-6 with a 3.74 ERA on the season. He'll try to keep it going against a struggling White Sox offense on Sunday.
Felix Doubront goes eight for ninth win | 08/21/2013 6:57 PM
NewsFelix Doubront pitched eight innings of one-run ball in Boston's 12-1 drubbing of San Francisco on Wednesday.
ImpactThat's as many innings as he pitched in his previous two starts combines. Doubront, though, has been a much improved pitcher this season, even with his strikeout rate down some. He's currently 9-6 with a 3.79 ERA. He's allowed more than three earned runs once in his last 18 starts.
Doubront knocked around in loss to Yankees | 08/16/2013 11:14 PM
NewsFelix Doubront was blasted for seven runs (six earned) over four innings in a loss to the Yankees on Friday.
ImpactDoubront allowed eight hits, including a two-run homer by Mark Reynolds and a three-run shot by Alfonso Soriano. It was his most runs allowed in a start since May 8. The southpaw will attempt to bounce back next week when he takes on the Giants in San Francisco.
Doubront spins 7 shutout innings in victory | 08/04/2013 5:45 PM
NewsFelix Doubront spun seven shutout innings in Sunday's victory against the Diamondbacks.
ImpactHe struck out five, walked none and scattered five hits. Because of his stuff, Doubront has the ability to toss a gem every time he takes the mound. Since mid-June, he's allowed only 13 runs over nine starts. Consistency -- and elevated pitch counts -- have both been problems, but the left-hander nevertheless stands 8-5 with a solid 3.56 ERA and 1.37 WHIP.
Doubront allows three runs in loss to Rays | 07/24/2013 10:20 PM
NewsFelix Doubront allowed three runs in 6 2/3 innings against the Rays on Wednesday.
ImpactDoubront wasn't bad, as he gave up six hits and two walks while striking out five in the outing, but he was still saddled with his fourth loss. The lefty has been on a serious roll since mid-June, posting six quality starts and a 3-1 record over those seven starts. He'll take on the Mariners his next time out.

He's been consistently throwing 88-89 mph this year and hasn't been effective with his secondary pitches. The Red Sox have Allen Webster waiting in the minors if he continues to struggle. However, the 25-year-old didn't exhibit any physical problems other than routine fatigue.
