Melancon gets final out Sunday for 15th save | 06/29/2014 4:53 PM
NewsMark Melancon recorded the final out of Sunday's win over the Mets for his 15th save of the season.
ImpactMelancon entered with two outs in the ninth to put out a fire started by Jared Hughes. Daniel Murphy singled, extending the Mets' rally, but Melancon was able to get Curtis Granderson to fly out to right to end the game. As the Pirates recently shipped out Jason Grilli to the Angels, Melancon will have the closer's job all to himself until he struggles or Ernesto Frieri shows dominance. Melancon is 15-for-18 in save chances with a 2.33 ERA, a 0.88 WHIP, and a 33/6 K/BB ratio in 38 2/3 innings.

The run scored was the first he's given up since May 30. The right-hander has a 2.04 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 33/6 K/BB ratio over 35 1/3 innings and has a chance to run away with the closer role while Jason Grilli struggles.

Mark Melancon takes over as Pirates' closer | 06/20/2014 2:06 PM
NewsMark Melancon will take over as the Pirates' primary closer.
Tom Singer on Twitter
ImpactJason Grilli has been booted from the role, though manager Clint Hurdle has said he intends for it to be a temporary demotion. Melancon boasts a 1.55 ERA over the last two seasons with the Pirates and has filled in a couple times while Grilli was on the DL. He should be a fine fantasy option in the ninth inning. Tony Watson could also see the occasional save chance when matchup dictate it or Melancon needs a breather.

NewsMark Melancon earned his 10th save of 2014 in the Pirates' 5-3 win over the Mets on Monday.
ImpactMelancon served up a leadoff homer to Lucas Duda in the bottom of the ninth inning but retired the next three batters he faced -- two via strikeout. The right-hander has been a dominant force in the Pittsburgh bullpen since the start of the 2013 season and may keep getting save opportunities until Jason Grilli (oblique) fully settles back in.

NewsMark Melancon recorded his ninth save of the season Saturday in the Pirates' 3-2 defeat of the Nationals.

NewsMark Melancon worked around a pair of ninth-inning walks to pick up his eighth save in Thursday's win over the Nationals.
ImpactMelancon, for the most part, has been automatic since taking over as closer in late April. Thursday's outing was anything but automatic, but he still got the job done, closing out the 3-1 victory. Along with eight saves, Melancon has a 2.05 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP.
Melancon picks up 7th save in win over O's | 05/21/2014 10:56 PM
NewsMark Melancon worked a scoreless ninth to pick up his seventh save of the season in Wednesday's win over the Orioles.
ImpactMelancon notched a pair of strikeouts in the effort as well. With Jason Grilli on his way back, the Pirates will have to think long and hard about taking Melancon out of his new ninth-inning role. The right-hander has a 2.14 ERA, 0.90 WHIP, and 14/3 K/BB ratio in 21 innings.
Mark Melancon takes blown save, loss | 05/15/2014 4:22 PM
NewsMark Melancon took a blown save and a loss after giving up two runs in the ninth Thursday against the Brewers.
ImpactMelancon never got an out; after giving up a single to Ryan Braun, he walked back-to-back batters and then surrendered a broken-bat single to Khris Davis that scored two and won the game. The walks were particularly uncharacteristic for Melancon; he had walked just one batter in 19 innings entering the game. He's now 5-for-7 in save chances since replacing the injured Jason Grilli.

Melancon surrendered a leadoff single to Daniel Descalso in the top of the ninth and later hit Matt Holliday with a pitch, but he struck out Allen Craig swinging to end the threat. Melancon will continue to get the save chances for Pittsburgh while Jason Grilli (oblique) is out.

Mark Melancon notches second save | 05/07/2014 4:18 PM
NewsMark Melancon nailed down his second save since taking over for Jason Grilli (oblique) with a perfect inning in Wednesday's win over the Giants.
ImpactIt was a pain-free effort in protecting a one-run lead, as Melancon induced three harmless flyouts to wrap up the victory. He blew a save Monday against the Giants, but Melancon boasts a 1.69 ERA for the season and should remain a fine ninth inning option while Grilli is on the shelf.
Mark Melancon takes first blown save | 05/06/2014 1:01 AM
NewsMark Melancon was charged with his first blown save after giving up a run in the ninth Monday against the Giants.
ImpactThe tying run probably would have scored eventually anyway, but Neil Walker should have knocked down the Buster Posey hit to right that scored it, which would have at least temporarily prevented Hunter Pence from scoring. For Melancon, it was the first misstep since Jason Grilli landed on the DL. He'll continue to close in Grilli's absence.
Melancon dominating out of Pirates' bullpen | 04/28/2014 9:03 PM
NewsMark Melancon boasts a 1.50 ERA, 0.67 WHIP and 9/1 K/BB ratio over 12 relief innings for the Pirates this season.
ImpactHe's allowed just one baserunner over his last five appearances. Melancon is handling the closing duties for the Pirates with Jason Grilli likely out until at least well into May with a strained oblique. He saved 16 games in 20 chances last season for the Pirates while Grilli was on the DL.
Melancon blows second save in three days | 09/20/2013 10:59 PM
NewsMark Melancon picked up his second blown save in the last three days, when he was unable to protect a three-run advantage against the Reds on Friday.
ImpactIt unfortunately spoiled another brilliant effort from Francisco Liriano. Melancon allowed a one-out single to Ryan Ludwick, who came around to score an unearned run when Todd Frazier reached on an error. A Zack Cozart single then put the tying run on base in the form of pinch-runner Billy Hamilton. After Hamilton swiped second, Devin Mesoraco reached on a two-run infield single on the ninth pitch of his at bat. While the runs were unearned, it's a black mark on an otherwise stellar season for Melancon.
Mark Melancon blows save vs. Padres | 09/18/2013 10:00 PM
NewsMark Melancon blew his third save of the season Wednesday, allowing two runs on four hits in a loss to the Padres.
ImpactMelancon retired the next two batters after a leadoff single, but the Pads got three straight two-out base knocks from Chris Denorfia, Logan Forsythe and Rene Rivera. It was a crushing loss for the Pirates, but Melancon deserves some slack, as he's still posted a 2.14 ERA while converting 14 of 16 save chances since taking over at closer.
Melancon earns 16th save as Buccos beat Cubs | 09/15/2013 4:41 PM
NewsMark Melancon notched a save against the Cubs for the second consecutive day on Sunday, hurling a perfect ninth inning.
ImpactThe right-hander struck out one and required just 11 pitches. He's recorded saves in seven straight appearances. With a lights-out aura and a sparkling 1.07 ERA and 0.88 WHIP, we expect Melancon to close out the season as closer over Jason Grilli, who doesn't even appear to be the club's No. 2 option at the moment; Kyle Farnsworth hasn't allowed a run in six appearances with the Pirates.
Mark Melancon slams door on Cubs in ninth | 09/14/2013 10:02 PM
NewsMark Melancon slammed the door on the Cubs in the ninth inning on Saturday, protecting a one-run advantage and earning his 15th save of the season.
ImpactMelancon has been incredible at the back end of the Pirates bullpen this season, posting a 1.09 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 65/8 K/BB ratio over his 66 1/3 innings. With Jason Grilli struggling to round back into form, there's a strong possibility Melancon could remain the team's primary closer for the remainder of the season.
Melancon earns 12th save as Bucs beat Rangers | 09/09/2013 11:09 PM
NewsMark Melancon secured his 12th save of the year in the Pirates' 1-0 triumph over the Rangers on Monday.
ImpactMelancon didn't strike out a batter, but that aided him in escaping the frame in just eight pitches. The right-hander is simply pitching too well for the contending Pirates to yank him from the closer's gig in favor of Jason Grilli. Melancon is 12-for-14 in save conversions to go with a 0.85 ERA and 0.85 WHIP.
Melancon notches 11th save, Pirates win 4-3 | 09/04/2013 12:24 AM
NewsMark Melancon earned his 11th save of the season in the Pirates' 4-3 victory over the Brewers on Tuesday.
ImpactOn the same day as the team activated closer Jason Grilli, Melancon showed why the Pirates aren't rushing to restore him to the closer role with his 11th save in 13 chances. The right-hander owns a 60/8 K/BB ratio ERA and a silly 0.87 ERA through 62 1/3 innings this year. Though the job will likely become Grilli's again in time, Melancon still has value in all formats while he holds the closer's baton in Pittsburgh.
Melancon earns 9th save as Bucs beat Giants | 08/24/2013 3:24 PM
NewsMark Melancon notched his ninth save of the season by firing a scoreless ninth inning against the Giants.
ImpactPittsburgh struggled earlier this month, depriving Melancon of adequate save opportunities. He's been dynamite when called upon, going 9-for-11 in save conversions with a 0.91 ERA and 0.83 WHIP over 60 appearances. Incredibly, Melancon is still first in the National League with 26 holds despite not earning his last in over a month. Melancon will add to that total in September, when Jason Grilli is expected to return from the disabled list.
Melancon gives up a run, earns his 8th save | 08/20/2013 1:08 AM
NewsMark Melancon earned his eighth save of the season Monday despite allowing a run on two hits against the Padres.
ImpactNick Hundley's RBI double cut the Pirates' lead to 3-1, but Melancon struck out Mark Kotsay to end the game. Entering the game, Melancon hadn't given up a run since July 21, a span that covered his reign as interim closer with Jason Grilli on the shelf. Melancon is 8-for-10 in save conversions and owns a pretty 0.93 ERA and 0.82 WHIP.

NewsMark Melancon earned his seventh save of the season Wednesday in the Pirates' win over the Marlins.

NewsMark Melancon earned his fourth save of the season Saturday in the Pirates' 7-4 win over the Marlins.
ImpactMelancon has taken over at closer for the Bucs with Jason Grilli in recovery mode from a flexor tendon strain. The 28-year-old right-hander owns an outstanding 0.91 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 48/7 K/BB ratio in 49 1/3 innings this season and is an obvious must-own in standard leagues. Pittsburgh is 1 1/2 games back of St. Louis in the NL Central.
Mark Melancon earns save Wednesday | 07/24/2013 10:48 PM
NewsMark Melancon notched his first save since taking over for the injured Jason Grilli Wednesday, tossing a scoreless inning in a win over the Nationals.
ImpactMelancon came on after Justin Wilson served up a single and a homer to start the ninth. The righty allowed a one-out single to Wilson Ramos and then benefited from a questionable double-play call to end the game where Neil Walker missed the tag on the Nats' catcher. It remains to be seen how long Grilli will be out, but Melancon should be a good fantasy closer while he has the gig.
Mark Melancon named to All-Star team | 07/14/2013 11:18 AM
NewsMark Melancon has been named as a replacement to the National League All-Star team.
Michael Sanserino on Twitter
ImpactIt's not clear whose spot he's taking, but it presumably will be teammate Jeff Locke's (back). The honor is well-deserved, as Melancon boasts a 0.81 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 46/4 K/BB ratio over 44 1/3 innings this season.
Melancon earns second save as Bucs top M's | 06/26/2013 6:52 PM
NewsMark Melancon earned his second save of the season Wednesday as the Pirates topped the Mariners 4-2.
ImpactIt was a 2-2 game until two Pittsburgh runs scored on a Jordy Mercer single in the top of the ninth inning. Melancon allowed two hits to Seattle in the bottom of that frame but escaped without any real damage. Jason Grilli was given another day off after blowing his first save of the season on Sunday afternoon against the Angels.
Melancon earns his second win of the year | 06/24/2013 3:21 AM
NewsMark Melancon earned his second win of the year by tossing a scoreless inning of relief Sunday against the Angels.
ImpactMelancon is somehow out-pitching closer Jason Grilli, who has been one of the league's best stoppers this year (despite the fact that Grilli allowed three runs in the 10th inning Sunday). In holds leagues, Melancon has been a monster. He leads the National League with 22 of them, to go with a miniscule 0.96 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 40/4 K/BB rate over 38 games. The right-hander has been traded three times in his tumultuous four-year career, but it appears as though he's found a home as Pittsburgh's closer of the future.
Melancon gets first save as Bucs beat Cubs | 05/22/2013 10:10 PM
NewsMark Melancon earned his first save of the season Wednesday as the Pirates defeated the Cubs.
ImpactJason Grilli threw 35 pitches on Tuesday night and was unavailable on Wednesday, so Melancon filled in and was able to convert. That setup man and closer combo has been excellent all season for the Pirates.
Mark Melancon records 10th hold | 05/01/2013 4:41 PM
NewsMark Melancon recorded his 10th hold by pitching a scoreless eighth in front of Jason Grilli on Wednesday.
ImpactMelancon has been outstanding, with an identical 0.60 ERA and 0.60 WHIP, but he hasn't made any inroads on Grilli's job, not with Grilli sporting a 0.75 ERA himself. Give the Pirates' bullpen a lot of credit for the team's hot start; of the four relievers used today, the weakest had a 1.59 ERA and a 0.88 WHIP.
Mark Melancon throws hitless inning | 03/22/2013 5:33 PM
NewsMark Melancon pitched a hitless frame Friday in the Pirates' 6-4 victory over the Rays.
ImpactMelancon's 5/4 K/BB ratio isn't very impressive, but he's allowed just two runs -- one earned -- in eight innings this spring. It's not going to move him past Jason Grilli into the closer's role for the Pirates right away, but we wouldn't be surprised to see the two switch spots at some point during the season.
