|Assets:||Gets a lot of velocity and movement on his pitches, despite his slight frame. His best pitch is his cutter, which he uses prominently to all batters. Is also a very good athlete and good hitter (with power) for a pitcher.|
|Flaws:||Walks are usually his undoing, so he must display more control of his repertoire for greater success. Also, he can at times fall in love with his cutter too much, so he must mix in his other pitches for maximum production.|
|Career Potential:||Athletic, solid left-hander.|

NewsCubs left-hander Travis Wood struggled against the Cardinals on Sunday, allowing four runs on six hits in four and 2/3 innings. He tossed up two home runs, walked three and struck out two.
ImpactThe poor start is a bit disappointing because Wood threw three shutout innings against the Reds in his last appearance. Wood received a no-decision. He is 8-11 with a 4.81 ERA in 161 innings this year.
Chicago left-hander Travis Wood fired six scoreless innings of two-hit ball Tuesday at Cincinnati to improve to 8-11. | 08/26/2014 10:47 PM
NewsChicago left-hander Travis Wood fired six scoreless innings of two-hit ball Tuesday at Cincinnati to improve to 8-11.
ImpactIt was Wood's first win since June 15. He's recorded a 3.07 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP in August but still has a 4.72 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP on the season.
Chicago left-hander Travis Wood threw his best start since June 15 Sunday against Tampa Bay, allowing one unearned run on four hits in six innings. | 08/10/2014 6:37 PM
NewsChicago left-hander Travis Wood threw his best start since June 15 Sunday against Tampa Bay, allowing one unearned run on four hits in six innings.
ImpactWood had a 3.11 ERA in 200 innings last season, but he's regressed horribly in 2014. In 139 innings, he's posted a 4.86 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP.
Wood allows seven runs in loss to D'Backs | 07/19/2014 11:11 PM
NewsTravis Wood gave up seven runs -- five earned -- in 5 1/3 innings Saturday in a loss to the Diamondbacks.
ImpactArizona got to him for eight hits and four walks and will be looking for the sweep on Sunday afternoon. Wood has not been good in July and probably belongs on fantasy benches (or waiver wires) for a while. He will carry a 5.12 ERA and 1.53 WHIP into his next scheduled start at home versus the Cardinals.
Travis Wood gets roughed up in loss to Braves | 07/13/2014 7:33 PM
NewsTravis Wood got roughed up by the Braves on Sunday, allowing seven runs over six innings in a loss.
ImpactWood gave up seven hits and three walks on the day, striking out four. The seven runs allowed snapped a string of seven straight starts allowing three earned runs or fewer. Wood hasn't won since June 15, falling to 7-8 with the loss, and he owns a 4.96 ERA and 1.49 WHIP at the break.
Travis Wood takes loss against Reds | 07/08/2014 4:38 PM
NewsTravis Wood fell to 7-7 after giving up four runs (three earned) over 5 1/3 innings Tuesday against the Reds.
ImpactWood gave up three runs in the first inning to put himself in an early hole and never really recovered. The southpaw fanned five and walked a pair and remains winless since June 15. He'll bring a 4.64 ERA into his final start of the first half this weekend against the Braves.
Travis Wood gets pulled in fourth | 07/03/2014 12:32 AM
NewsTravis Wood yielded three runs and seven hits in 3 2/3 innings Wednesday against the Red Sox.
ImpactAn uncharacteristically wild Wood walked four and hit a batter in the contest. He also gave up seven hits, so he was lucky to escape with only minimal damage to his ERA. Wood simply hasn't been of much use in mixed leagues this year.
Wood takes no-decision with 3 ER in 6 2/3 IP | 06/26/2014 11:00 PM
NewsTravis Wood got a no-decision, allowing three runs over 6 2/3 innings in Thursday's win over the Nationals.
ImpactWood blanked the Nats over five, but allowed a run on an Anthony Rendon single in the sixth, and two more on a Denard Span double in the seventh before being lifted. Overall, Wood allowed seven hits, walked five, and struck out four. The lefty has been frustrating for fantasy owners due to his inconsistency. He'll take a 4.52 ERA, a 1.40 WHIP, and a 77/39 K/BB ratio into his next start against the Red Sox on the road.
Wood goes eight scoreless, Cubs down Phillies | 06/15/2014 4:38 PM
NewsTravis Wood pitched eight scoreless innings, allowing just three hits, and the Cubs beat the Phillies 3-0 on Sunday.
ImpactWood allowed just three singles on the afternoon while walking three. The southpaw also struck out six. The win was Wood's fifth in his last seven starts, moving him to 7-5 with a 4.48 ERA and 1.36 WHIP in 14 starts. He'll look to keep it going Saturday against the Pirates.
Wood gets 6th win with solid outing vs. PIT | 06/10/2014 10:53 PM
NewsTravis Wood improved to 6-5, allowing three runs over 6 2/3 innings as the Cubs defeated the Pirates 7-3 on Tuesday.
ImpactWood's season has been a very bumpy ride, but he looked in control for the most part on Tuesday. The lefty allowed nine hits -- including a two-run home run to Andrew McCutchen -- while walking two and striking out two. Wood lowered his ERA to 4.95 in the effort, which he'll look to deflate further in his next start against the Phillies on the road.
SP Wood makes difference at the plate in win | 06/05/2014 10:34 PM
NewsTravis Wood got the no-decision, allowing two runs over five innings in Thursday's 7-4 win over the Mets.
ImpactWood was mediocre on the mound, but made up for it at the dish with three runs batted in against Mets pitching. He blasted a two-run home run in the second inning -- his second of the season -- and knocked in a run with a ground out in the fourth. On the mound, he allowed four hits, walked five, and struck out three. His results haven't been nearly as good as they were last season, and he'll bring a 5.04 ERA into next week's road start against the Pirates.
Wood rocked for seven runs in loss to Brewers | 05/31/2014 12:20 AM
NewsTravis Wood was knocked around for seven runs on 10 hits and one walk over just 2 2/3 innings in Friday's loss to the Brewers.
ImpactIt was his shortest outing of the season. Wood dug an early hole by himself by giving up five runs in the first inning and simply failed to recover. The southpaw showed some signs of progress in his most recent two starts, but he took a big step back with this one, seeing his ERA go up to 5.15 for year. He'll attempt to rebound next week against the Mets at home.
Travis Wood earns win over Padres | 05/25/2014 12:58 AM
NewsTravis Wood held the Padres to two runs and three hits over 7 1/3 innings to win Saturday.
ImpactAs he so often does, Wood helped his own cause with an RBI single. While it's far from the only reason, it should be factored in that one of the reasons Wood is 5-4 with a 4.35 ERA while Jeff Samardzija is 0-4 with a 1.46 ERA is that the former is probably baseball's best hitting pitcher and the latter is down near the bottom. It made the difference in a 3-2 game tonight.
Wood deals against the Brewers to pick up win | 05/18/2014 5:21 PM
NewsTravis Wood worked around some early control problems to pick up his fourth win of the season, allowing two runs in seven innings against the Brewers on Sunday.
ImpactWood walked the bases loaded with two outs in the first inning, but escaped without allowing a run. Rickie Weeks put the Brewers on the board with a two-run home run in the fifth, but otherwise, Wood was sharp. The lefty allowed just two hits and the three walks while striking out seven. It was a nice change as Wood had been shaky in his previous two starts. Wood will have a very nice match-up in his next start, facing the Padres at Petco Park.
Travis Wood picks up win in 17-5 game | 05/13/2014 12:33 AM
NewsTravis Wood was given an easy win after allowing five runs -- four earned -- in six innings Monday against the Cardinals.
ImpactThe Cubs racked up nine runs in the first four innings, leaving Wood with several long waits before he could back to the mound. That might have had something to do with his shaky outing, but then, he wasn't very good in two of his previous three starts and he had no such excuses then.
Travis Wood gives up eight runs to White Sox | 05/07/2014 11:49 PM
NewsTravis Wood had an off night on Wednesday, giving up eight runs in four innings against the White Sox.
ImpactWood was probably frustrated about not being allowed to hit in the AL park. Besides giving up eight hits, he walked five on the night. He had walked a total of seven batters in six starts coming in. Chalk it up to a bad day. We're not big believers in Wood remaining useful in mixed leagues, but he's a fine NL-only starter.
Travis Wood keeps Cardinals in check | 05/02/2014 5:57 PM
NewsTravis Wood limited the Cardinals to three runs -- two earned -- across seven innings in Friday's 6-5 win.
ImpactWood out-dueled Adam Wainwright, allowing six hits while striking out six and not walking anyone. The left-hander moved to 2-3 on the season, but he's put up a nice 3.35 ERA and 1.25 WHIP to go along with a 37/7 K/BB ratio over 37 2/3 innings. He'll try to keep it going next week when the Cubs travel a few miles south to face the White Sox.
Wood shelled for five runs in loss to Brewers | 04/26/2014 10:06 PM
NewsTravis Wood was shelled for five earned runs in 5 2/3 innings Saturday in a loss to the Brewers.
ImpactWood was shaky out of the gate, yielding one run in the first inning, and two runs in the second as the Brewers cruised to their 18th win in 24 games this season. Wood will try to bounce back next time out against the Cardinals. It's not a great fantasy matchup.
Travis Wood pitches, hits Cubs past D'backs | 04/22/2014 12:07 AM
NewsTravis Wood allowed one run over seven innings and hit his first homer as part of a four-RBI night to lead the Cubs over the Diamondbacks 5-1 on Monday.
ImpactWood showed that his three homers and .639 OPS from last season isn't a fluke; he had a three-run homer and an RBI double off Bronson Arroyo tonight. He also had one of his better outings on the mound for his first win in four starts. He has a 2.52 ERA, but run support has been an issue. It would have been tonight as well, had he not taken matters into his own hands.
Travis Wood takes tough no-decision | 04/10/2014 6:01 PM
NewsTravis Wood took a no-decision after giving up one run in six-plus innings Thursday against the Pirates.
ImpactSo foolish: manager Rick Renteria left Wood in to start the seventh, only to pull him immediately after a leadoff double. Not only is that a crummy way to run a pitching staff, but it gave the Pirates a much better pinch-hitting opportunity with Travis Snider hitting against a righty. Snider homered to account for the only run Wood allowed, and the Pirates ended up scoring five runs in the frame, costing Wood the victory in what had been a 4-0 game.
Wood shuts out White Sox over three frames | 03/27/2014 5:12 PM
NewsTravis Wood tossed three shutout innings in Thursday's start against the White Sox.
ImpactWood was sharp, allowing only two hits and walking one while striking out four. The Cubs hope Wood can defy the skeptics and continue pitching like he did last season, when he finished with a 3.11 ERA over 32 starts.
Travis Wood fans eight in loss to Indians | 03/16/2014 6:56 PM
NewsTravis Wood delivered a strong performance in Sunday's loss to the Indians, racking up eight strikeouts over his five innings of work.
ImpactThe veteran left-hander allowed a pair of runs on four hits in the contest and didn't walk a batter. He sports a 5.91 ERA on the Cactus League season, but Sunday's performance was much more indicative of how he pitched during his breakout 2013 campaign.
Wood struggles against the Rockies | 03/11/2014 5:09 PM
NewsTravis Wood surrendered five runs in 2 2/3 innings in Tuesday's start against the Rockies.
ImpactWood gave up nine hits and walked one without recording a strikeout. Despite pedestrian strikeout and walk rates last season, Wood finished with a 3.11 ERA. If today's outing is any indication, he'll have trouble reprising that performance this season.
Wood fires three scoreless vs. Indians | 03/06/2014 5:22 PM
NewsTravis Wood tossed three scoreless innings in Thursday's start against the Indians.
ImpactWood surrendered only one hit and struck out three. He's unlikely to replicate his 3.11 ERA from 2013 unless he gets lucky, but he be a valuable arm at the top of the Cubs' rotation anyway.
Travis Wood, Cubs avoid arbitration at $3.9M | 01/24/2014 10:13 AM
NewsCubs and LHP Travis Wood avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $3.9 million contract.
Patrick Mooney on Twitter
ImpactIt's just above the midpoint of figures exchanged last week. Wood was arbitration-eligible for the first time after putting up a 3.11 ERA across 32 starts last season. He'll be a key part of the Cubs' rotation again in 2014.
Wood, Cubs exchange arbitration figures | 01/17/2014 7:07 PM
NewsTravis Wood requested $4.25 million and was offered $3.5 million from the Cubs when arbitration figures were exchanged on Friday.
Gordon Wittenmyer on Twitter
ImpactThe 26-year-old southpaw is coming off an impressive 2013 season where he compiled a 3.11 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 144/66 K/BB ratio over 200 innings of work. He'll earn somewhere between the two figures, which represents a sizable raise over the $527,500 he took home in 2013.
Wood gives up three runs in brief outing | 09/27/2013 11:25 PM
NewsTravis Wood was pulled after allowing three runs over one inning Friday against the Cardinals.
ImpactThe plan all along was for Wood to only pitch one inning so that he could reach 200 innings for the year. Unfortunately, his ERA jumped from 2.98 to 3.11 in the process. Still, there's a lot to like about what he's done this season. The 26-year-old southpaw has established himself as a solid building block for the Cubs and should be relevant in mixed leagues again in 2014.
Wood expected to pitch only one inning Friday | 09/27/2013 6:12 PM
NewsTravis Wood is expected to only pitch one inning Friday against the Cardinals.
Jesse Rogers on Twitter
ImpactThis will allow him to get to 200 innings for the season. Brooks Raley is expected to take over from there, so keep this in mind if you are counting on Wood in fantasy leagues.
Wood goes seven strong as Cubs top Braves | 09/21/2013 7:03 PM
NewsTravis Wood tossed seven innings of one-run ball Saturday in the Cubs' 3-1 defeat of the Braves.
ImpactWood was left with a no-decision because the Cubs' offense didn't break through until the bottom of the eighth. It was the 24th quality start of the season for Wood, which ranks him among the top six starting pitchers in that stat category this season. He'll try to put the cherry on top of the sundae next week in St. Louis.
Travis Wood goes seven scoreless in win | 09/09/2013 10:46 PM
NewsTravis Wood scattered six hits in seven innings and combined with two relievers on a shutout of the Reds on Monday.
ImpactWood finally has a win over his former team; he hadn't pitched badly, but he was 0-3 with a 3.67 ERA in four previous starts against the Reds this season. He struck out seven tonight to win for the second time in eight starts. Pedro Strop and Kevin Gregg went on to finish the 2-0 shutout.
Wood gives up four runs in loss to Marlins | 09/02/2013 5:20 PM
NewsTravis Wood allowed four runs over seven innings Monday in a loss to the Marlins.
ImpactAll the damage came from the long ball, as he allowed a solo home run to Christian Yelich in the first inning and a three-run blast to opposing pitcher Henderson Alvarez in the second. Wood struck out three and walked two in the loss. He'll carry a 3.17 ERA into a start against the Brewers this weekend.
Travis Wood picks up victory over Dodgers | 08/28/2013 1:59 AM
NewsTravis Wood outdueled Clayton Kershaw on Tuesday, allowing just an unearned run over seven innings to beat the Dodgers.
ImpactWood won for the first time in a month and sent Kershaw to his second loss since the All-Star break. If Wood can maintain his current 3.09 ERA, it'd be the lowest ERA for a Cubs starter (min. 162 IP) since Randy Wells came in at 3.05 in 2009.
Travis Wood fails to post quality start | 08/22/2013 8:40 PM
NewsTravis Wood allowed four runs over 6 2/3 innings in Thursday's loss to the Nationals.
ImpactWood gave up seven hits, walked two and struck out four. The southpaw served up a pair of home runs and has now allowed five over his last four starts after giving up nine over his first 21 outings. Though he's still mostly pitched well, Wood's ERA has slowly climbed up to 3.22 after he began the month with a 2.79 mark. He has a tough matchup on the road against the Dodgers next week.
Wood surrenders four runs in loss to Cards | 08/17/2013 7:19 PM
NewsTravis Wood surrendered four earned runs in 5 1/3 innings Saturday in a loss to the Cardinals.
ImpactWood was perfect through three, but Matt Carpenter led off the fourth inning with a double and Carlos Beltran promptly drove him in. Jon Jay then scored on an infield sac fly in the fifth inning that was botched by shortstop Starlin Castro and Yadier Molina launched a two-run homer in the sixth. Wood will carry a 3.13 ERA and 1.10 WHIP into his next start at home against the Nationals.
Travis Wood takes tough loss in 2-0 game | 08/12/2013 11:06 PM
NewsTravis Wood yielded two runs and four hits over eight innings in a loss to the Reds on Monday.
ImpactWood has bounced back nicely in his last two starts, allowing four runs over 14 1/3 innings. Still, all he's gotten to show for it is a no-decision and a loss. He's now 0-4 with a 4.15 ERA in six starts against the Reds since they traded him to the Cubs prior to the 2012 season.
Wood goes 6 1/3 innings, allows two vs. Phils | 08/07/2013 10:24 PM
NewsTravis Wood allowed two runs in 6 1/3 innings in a no-decision against the Phillies on Wednesday.
ImpactWood gave up six hits and a walk in the game, striking out seven. He bounced back after lasting just 3 1/3 innings in his last start. He wasn't able to get the win, so Wood remained at 7-8 with a 3.04 ERA on the year. He'll face the Reds on Monday.
Travis Wood walks five in loss to Dodgers | 08/02/2013 8:54 PM
NewsTravis Wood walked five and gave up five runs in 3 1/3 innings Friday in a loss to the Dodgers.
ImpactWood has now walked nine in his last two starts after walking a total of 40 batters in his first 19 outings. He's definitely fading some, with just one quality start in four tries since the All-Star break, and worst of all, these early exits are costing him at-bats!
Wood surrenders one run in Sunday win vs. SFG | 07/28/2013 7:16 PM
NewsTravis Wood surrendered one run -- none earned -- on four hits over seven innings in a Sunday win over the Giants.
ImpactHe struck out seven and walked four. Wood also played offensive star, going 2-for-3 with a solo homer (his third of the year) off Tim Lincecum in the fifth inning that represented the game's first run. Wood is batting an impressive .293/.326/.537 this season. He's also 7-7 with a 2.79 ERA.
Wood allows 4 runs on 8 hits in loss | 07/24/2013 1:16 AM
NewsTravis Wood allowed four runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings during Tuesday night's loss to the Diamondbacks.
ImpactHe struck out two and walked a pair. Wood (6-7, 2.95 ERA) failed to go at least six innings for the second consecutive outing but just the third time this season. He's allowed 18 hits over his last two starts, but we lean toward forgiveness due to the opposition: St. Louis and Arizona.
Wood unable to continue quality start streak | 07/15/2013 12:13 AM
NewsTravis Wood allowed three runs over 5 2/3 innings in Sunday night's loss to the Cardinals.
ImpactHe gave up 10 hits and three walks, but was able to limit the damage. Wood has been a quality start machine, as it's just the second time this season that he hasn't went at least six innings. He'll take a 2.79 ERA and 1.04 WHIP into the All-Star break.
Wood allows two runs, wins sixth vs. Angels | 07/10/2013 12:21 AM
NewsTravis Wood allowed two runs on four hits over 6 2/3 innings in a win against the Angels on Tuesday.
ImpactWood's only mistake was a two-run homer by Albert Pujols. Otherwise he was stellar, giving up just four hits and two walks while striking out five. The All-Star now has a 2.69 ERA and 0.97 WHIP this season. His final start before the break comes Sunday night against the Cardinals.
Travis Wood available to pitch in AS game | 07/09/2013 9:24 PM
NewsTravis Wood will be available to pitch in next Tuesday's All-Star game.
ImpactWood is scheduled to start on Sunday, but he's eligible to one inning if he wants. "It's going to be a side day [for Wood] anyway," Cubs manager Dale Sveum said. "I've got no problem [with him] pitching one inning or 20 pitches, just the same as you'd pitch your side. He goes all out on his side days anyway."
Travis Wood terrific in no-decision | 07/04/2013 7:08 PM
NewsTravis Wood held the Athletics scoreless over six innings but took a no-decision in Thursday's loss.
ImpactHe yielded just three singles, walked one and struck out five. Cubs manager Dale Sveum elected to remove Wood because he was at 101 pitches, and the A's got on the board with the lone tally of the game in the seventh. Though just 5-6, Wood sports a nifty 2.69 ERA and 0.98 WHIP. He'll take on the Angels at home next.
Wood goes six innings in loss to Bucs | 06/07/2013 5:52 PM
NewsTravis Wood yielded one run in six innings Friday in a loss to the Pirates.
ImpactWood held the Pirates off the board until Russell Martin doubled in Jordy Mercer in his final inning of work. The southpaw gave up four hits and two walks while striking out six in the tough luck loss. Wood still owns a fine 2.65 ERA on the year, but with his fly ball tendencies, it's fair to expect his ERA to rise as he gets further into the summer. He'll get the Reds next week at home.
Wood to get extra rest before next start | 06/02/2013 9:12 AM
NewsTravis Wood won't make his next start until Friday against the Pirates.
ImpactThe Cubs are taking advantage of a couple off days to give Wood, who is on pace for a career-high 216 innings. ``It works out,'' said Cubs manager Dale Sveum, who added that Wood has no health issues. ``You're always going to try, when everything works out, to give somebody extra time off. It's a good time - two months into the season - to give him a little breather.''
Travis Wood allows five runs in loss to Reds | 05/25/2013 7:36 PM
NewsTravis Wood surrendered five earned runs in 5 2/3 innings Saturday as the Cubs fell to the Reds.
ImpactFacing his former team, Wood yielded seven hits and three walks while throwing just 69 of his 115 pitches for strikes. It snapped a streak of nine straight quality starts for the left-hander. The regression could certainly continue in his next outing against the White Sox.
Wood allows three runs, Cubs lose to Brewers | 05/19/2013 5:29 PM
NewsTravis Wood allowed three earned runs over seven innings Sunday as the Cubs fell to the Brewers.
ImpactWood was only decent, which was a disappointment considering how well he has pitched this season and how poor the Mets' lineup is. Wood gave up five hits and two walks, watching his ERA rise from 2.03 to 2.24 and his WHIP from 0.92 to 0.93. He'll try for better next time out against the Reds.
Travis Wood shuts out Rockies for seven | 05/13/2013 11:35 PM
NewsTravis Wood allowed two hits over seven scoreless innings Monday as the Cubs crushed the Rockies 9-1.
ImpactWe expect nothing less from baseball's best pitcher. Wood is now 8-for-8 turning in quality starts this season. He has a favorable assignment coming up with the Reds next on the schedule.
Travis Wood cruises as Cubs beat Cardinals | 05/07/2013 11:00 PM
NewsTravis Wood held the Cardinals to one run over 6 2/3 innings Tuesday as the Cubs grabbed a 2-1 victory.
ImpactYet another fine outing for the 26-year-old lefty, who now owns a 2.33 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 34 strikeouts in 46 1/3 innings this season. Wood fanned eight Cardinals batters, allowing only five hits and two walks. The only real damage came on a solo blast from Allen Craig in the top of the second inning. Wood will try to keep it rolling next week against the Rockies.
Wood limits Marlins to two runs in win | 04/27/2013 10:08 PM
NewsTravis Wood limited the Marlins to two earned runs over six innings Saturday to earn his second victory.
ImpactWood gave up two home runs -- including a first-inning bomb by Giancarlo Stanton -- but was otherwise solid. He yielded only three hits in all, striking out five batters against one walk. The 26-year-old left-hander has been a nice surprise in a disappointing start to the 2013 season for Chicago. He'll carry a 2-1 record, 2.25 ERA and 0.97 WHIP into his next scheduled outing against the Padres.
Travis Wood turns in another strong outing | 04/16/2013 11:30 PM
NewsTravis Wood allowed two runs in 7 1/3 innings, but he took the loss against the Rangers on Tuesday.
ImpactWood didn't deserve his fate on Tuesday, as his lineup was shut down by opposing starter Derek Holland. The lefty now has a 1.83 ERA and 1.07 WHIP through three starts and is garnering attention in mixed leagues. His next start, Sunday against a struggling Brewers lineup, could also offer a nice return.
Wood strong in no-decision vs. Brewers | 04/10/2013 12:04 AM
NewsTravis Wood allowed three runs -- two earned -- in 6 1/3 innings in the Cubs' win over the Brewers on Tuesday.
ImpactThat's two straight quality starts for the 26-year-old. His second start wasn't as good as his first, but he was still good enough to deserve a better fate. The lefty now has a 1.46 ERA and 1.05 WHIP on the season. His mediocre strikeout numbers and, most likely, modest win total still relegates him to an NL-only option at this point. His next start will come against the Giants on Sunday.
