|Assets:||Has a great slider, the ability to pitch late in games and an affinity for the strikeout. Has also found his niche pitching out of the 'pen. Drops down a bit in his delivery for added deception.|
|Flaws:||Is smallish by pitchers' standards. When his pitches elevate, he runs the risk of getting taken out of the yard with frequency. Lacks a little consistency in his delivery.|

Giants remove Sergio Romo from closer role | 06/29/2014 2:54 PM
NewsGiants manager Bruce Bochy said Sunday that Sergio Romo has been removed from the closer role.
Henry Schulman on Twitter
ImpactSantiago Casilla and Jeremy Affeldt will receive the save chances for now. Romo blew his fifth save of the season Saturday and has allowed 15 runs in his last 15 innings. There's a good chance the 31-year-old will eventually get his job back, but for now Casilla and Affeldt will be getting the ball in the ninth inning.
Bochy doesn't back Sergio Romo as closer | 06/29/2014 9:32 AM
NewsGiants manager Bruce Bochy after Saturday's game wouldn't confirm whether Sergio Romo is still his closer.
CSN Bay Area
ImpactRomo blew another save chance Saturday and has allowed 15 runs in his last 15 innings. "Oh, I don't know," Bochy said. "I won't answer it now. It's something I'm sure we'll talk about here tomorrow. He's done such a good job for us. I know everybody has their moments. If we have to tweak it, we'll tweak it. This is not the time to talk about it." Ultimately, the Giants seem likely to stick with Romo given how successful he's been over the last few years. However, Santiago Casilla should be scooped up just in case.
Sergio Romo blows fifth save | 06/29/2014 1:49 AM
NewsSergio Romo took his third blown save in five chances and fifth overall Saturday after giving up two runs in the ninth against the Reds.
ImpactRomo hasn't really gotten consistent work lately, but then, he's not typically one who has needed it to stay sharp. He walked Joey Votto and gave up a homer to Brandon Phillips in the ninth tonight. It's possible the Giants could consider lifting him from the closer's role with his ERA up to 5.17. If so, Santiago Casilla would be next in line. Still, it seems more likely that they'll give Romo at least one more chance to save his job.
Romo works scoreless inning for 22nd save | 06/22/2014 11:58 PM
NewsSergio Romo came on in relief of Madison Bumgarner in the ninth inning to close out the Diamondbacks on Sunday.
ImpactAn error and a hit left two on with nobody out for Romo, who allowed an inherited run to score before slamming the door. Romo had a tough couple of games against the Rockies in mid-June, but he's turned in two straight scoreless innings the past two days. He's still not as dominant as he had been prior to the rough patch, and he may benefit from a few days' rest over the upcoming All-Star break.
Romo blows another save, Giants fall to Rox | 06/14/2014 7:55 PM
NewsSergio Romo took his fourth blown save of the season Saturday in the Giants' loss to the Rockies.
ImpactRomo also blew a save on Friday night -- allowing five runs in that particular disaster. He gave up two runs Saturday on a Charlie Blackmon single and a Brandon Barnes inside-the-park homer that scooted past Giants center fielder Angel Pagan. Romo has a rough 5.08 ERA on the season, but there's been no indication yet that a change is coming.
Sergio Romo gives up five runs in loss | 06/14/2014 1:59 AM
NewsSergio Romo gave up five runs in the ninth Friday to take a blown save and a loss against the Rockies.
ImpactThere was more intentional walk goodness in this one, as Corey Dickerson was given a free pass with one down and runners on second and third in a 4-2 game in the ninth. The Rockies scored five runs from there, the last two coming after Romo was replaced. The blown save was Romo's third in 23 chances and second to result in a loss. Both of those losses have come versus the Rockies.
Romo grabs 18th save, ties for the MLB lead | 06/04/2014 10:33 PM
NewsSergio Romo picked up save number 18 with a perfect ninth inning in Wednesday's win over the Reds.
ImpactRomo tied Padres closer Huston Street for the MLB lead in saves. His outing on Wednesday ended a run of three consecutive outings in which he allowed a run. It's been an uncharacteristically mediocre season for Romo, as he has a 3.38 ERA and a 0.83 WHIP, but has already allowed four home runs and walked five in 24 innings, putting him on pace to surpass his respective career-highs of six and 14.
Romo escapes with 17th save vs. the Cards | 05/29/2014 11:42 PM
NewsSergio Romo narrowly escaped with his 17th save as the Giants defeated the Cardinals 6-5 on Thursday.
ImpactTasked with preserving a two-run lead, Romo put runners on first and second base with two outs before allowing a run-scoring single to Matt Carpenter to make it 6-5. Romo was able to get Shane Robinson to weakly pop up to third base to end the frame, however, cinching his 17th save of the season. Romo has been much more hittable this season than in seasons past, now carrying a 3.52 ERA with a pedestrian -- by his standards -- 19/5 K/BB ratio in 23 innings.
Romo picks up 15th save in win over Marlins | 05/18/2014 7:28 PM
NewsSergio Romo worked around a one-out single to convert his 15th save of the season in Sunday's win over the Marlins.
ImpactDespite raising some eyebrows with a markedly lower strikeout rate dating back to last season, Romo has been getting the job done for the Giants. His 15 saves are second-best in baseball, and he carries a 2.21 ERA with an 0.64 WHIP and a 17/3 K/BB ratio in 20 1/3 innings.
Giants, Romo agree to hold off on talks | 05/08/2014 4:22 PM
NewsCBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Giants and closer Sergio Romo have agreed to hold off on contract talks, likely until the end of the season.
ImpactRomo, an impending free agent, is making $5.5 million this year in his final season of arbitration. The 31-year-old is a perfect 10-for-10 in save chances so far this year and owns a 1.88 ERA and 12/3 K/BB ratio over 14 1/3 innings. If he can stay healthy, he'll command a big contract this winter.
Romo earns ninth save, Giants defeat Braves | 05/03/2014 10:15 PM
NewsSergio Romo picked up his ninth save of the year Saturday in the Giants' 3-1 win over the Braves.
ImpactRomo struck out one in a perfect ninth inning. It was a nice sight after his shaky save conversion on Friday. The right-hander is sporting a 2.02 ERA and 0.75 WHIP.
Romo converts eighth save of season | 05/02/2014 11:11 PM
NewsSergio Romo survived a shaky ninth inning Friday against the Braves for his eighth save of the season.
ImpactAfter entering the bottom of the ninth inning with a one-run lead, Romo retired the first two batters he faced, but he then gave up a single to B.J. Upton before walking Freddie Freeman. However, he was able to strike out Justin Upton swinging to end the ballgame. Romo is 8-for-8 in save chances thus far and has a 2.19 ERA and 11/3 K/BB ratio over 12 1/3 innings.
Romo cashes in one-out save, Giants beat SDP | 05/01/2014 12:54 AM
NewsSergio Romo converted a one-out save in Wednesday's 3-2 win against the Padres.
ImpactBruce Botchy brought his veteran closer on to put the finishing touches on Tim Hudson's 8 2/3 inning gem, and Romo did his job, coaxing a ground out to short from pinch hitter Chris Denorfia. One week ago, Romo allowed two runs against the Rockies. Outside of that outing, he allowed no runs, one hit and two walks over his other 10 April appearances. Romo is 7-for-7 in save conversions with a 2.38 ERA and 0.71 WHIP.
Romo earns fifth save in victory over Padres | 04/20/2014 8:54 PM
NewsSergio Romo pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save against the Padres on Sunday.
ImpactRomo walked a batter but was otherwise spotless. The save was his fifth, and Romo is yet to blow a save opportunity on the year. He's got a 1.13 ERA, 0.63 WHIP and 9/2 K/BB ratio over eight innings to start the year.
RP Romo earns fourth save, strikes out four | 04/17/2014 1:41 AM
NewsSergio Romo whiffed a pair while working a perfect ninth inning for his fourth save against the Dodgers on Wednesday.
ImpactRomo coughed up a run while earning a rocky save on Opening Day against the Diamondbacks. Since then, he's fired six shutout innings and allowed only one hit and one walk. Romo is missing bats and refusing to give away bases again, the recipe that helped him leap into the group of the game's elite closers last year. He owns a 1.29 ERA, 0.57 WHIP, and 9/1 K/BB rate over seven innings.
Sergio Romo fans side for third save | 04/12/2014 1:51 AM
NewsSergio Romo struck out the side Friday for his third save against the Rockies.
ImpactRomo suffered from stomach cramps Thursday due to an illness, but it didn't seem to hold him back tonight. He's allowed one run in four innings this season.
Sergio Romo had stomach cramps Thursday | 04/11/2014 8:29 AM
NewsSergio Romo had stomach cramps brought on by illness during Thursday's game versus the Diamondbacks.
San Francisco Chronicle
ImpactRomo was seen in the dugout in obvious distress after pitching a scoreless inning, but it appears to be no big deal. He should be available to pitch Friday if there's a save situation.
RP Romo blanks Snakes, earns second save | 04/03/2014 12:39 AM
NewsSergio Romo earned his second save of the season by tossing a perfect ninth inning against the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.
ImpactThis appearance went much more smoothly than his first save appearance of the year in which the right-hander escaped despite a solo Miguel Montero homer on Tuesday. Twenty-four hours later he looked like the Romo of 2013, setting the Snakes down 1-2-3, including a strikeout of the vaunted Paul Goldschmidt. Romo emerged as one of baseball's best closers last season, and you should see more flailing bats and pinpoint control during his appearances in 2014.
Sergio Romo having rough spring | 03/10/2014 11:15 AM
NewsSergio Romo has allowed 12 runs (11 earned) over three-plus innings of work this spring.
ImpactIn his most recent appearance on Saturday, Romo failed to retire any of the batters he faced, giving up three hits and two walks. He has relied almost exclusively on his fastball and his changeup this spring, so perhaps he is just holding back his electric slider for games that actually matter, but the situation is worth monitoring.
Romo allows unearned run against the Reds | 03/06/2014 6:01 PM
NewsSergio Romo allowed an unearned run in his only inning of work against the Reds in Thursday's 3-2 victory.
ImpactRomo emerged as one of baseball's best closer's last season, combining great control with an impressive ability to miss bats. He'll be reprising the role and he can reasonably be expected to provide more of the same exquisite relief work.
Romo slammed for six runs in an inning | 02/26/2014 5:11 PM
NewsSergio Romo surrendered six runs in an inning of work against the Athletics on Wednesday.
ImpactRomo was singled to death, allowing six of them along with a triple, leading to six Athletics runs in the fourth inning. It is not exactly the start he was hoping for, but one inning in his first appearance of spring should not sound the alarm. Expect him to once again rank among baseball's best closers this season.
Romo earns save, Giants beat Dodgers | 09/26/2013 1:34 AM
NewsSergio Romo earned his 37th save of the season by tossing a scoreless ninth inning against the Dodgers on Wednesday.
ImpactRomo has struggled a bit in September, entering this evening's action with a 3.38 ERA and hideous 1.88 WHIP this month. He's only blown one save in September, of course, and was enjoying a fine season before that. Romo is 37-for-42 in save opportunities and boasts a 2.62 ERA and 1.10 WHIP over 63 appearances.
Romo suffers fifth blown save against Mets | 09/18/2013 10:36 PM
NewsSergio Romo sustained his fifth blown save of the season and took the loss against the Mets on Wednesday.
ImpactGiants manager Bruce Bochy tried to avoid using Romo after he pitched Tuesday, but after Santiago Casilla was unable to close it out Romo was called on for a second straight day. He responded by allowing three hits and a walk, capped by a Josh Satin walk-off two-run single. Romo has still had a strong season and shouldn't be downgraded now for a poor outing.
Sergio Romo slams door on Dodgers in ninth | 09/15/2013 7:39 PM
NewsSergio Romo slammed the door on the Dodgers in the ninth inning on Sunday, protecting a one-run advantage and earning his 35th save of the season.
ImpactIt certainly wasn't smooth sailing for Romo, as Chili Buss led off the inning with a single, was sacrificed to second by Nick Punto, and went to third on a single by Dee Gordon. Romo then bore down and fanned A.J. Ellis, and after walking Adrian Gonzalez intentionally, got pinch-hitter Yasiel Puig to hit into a fielder's choice to end the game. Romo now owns a 2.50 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 55/10 K/BB ratio through 54 innings on the year.
Romo earns first save in month of September | 09/14/2013 1:44 AM
NewsSergio Romo earned his first save of September by working 1 1/3 scoreless frames against the Dodgers on Friday.
ImpactRomo retired the only batter he faced in the eighth, but surrendered consecutive singles to kick off the ninth before setting down three straight. Romo hadn't notched a save since August 30, one reason he's pitched only four times since that date. The right-hander is 34-of-38 in save conversions and owns a pristine 2.50 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 55/10 K/BB ratio.
Romo earns fourth victory of the season | 08/21/2013 1:33 AM
NewsSergio Romo tossed a perfect inning of relief to earn the win on Tuesday against the Red Sox.
ImpactAll three outs were ground balls, and Romo finished off Boston in just 10 pitches. The right-hander has strung together five consecutive scoreless appearances and three straight perfect innings. He's 4-6 with 30 saves and a 2.72 ERA over 46 1/3 innings.
Romo survives homer, earns 27th save | 08/06/2013 1:51 AM
NewsSergio Romo coughed up a solo home run to Milwaukee's Juan Francisco in the ninth inning Monday but escaped with the save.
ImpactRomo has allowed two homers in his last four appearances. He's been in a bit of a rut since June 20, giving up at least one hit in six of seven appearances. Romo has taken six losses this season and blown four saves, but he owns a decent 3.02 ERA and great 1.06 WHIP. His job isn't in jeopardy.
Sergio Romo handed sixth loss by Cubs | 07/28/2013 12:13 AM
NewsSergio Romo took his sixth loss after giving up a Nate Schierholtz homer in the top of the ninth Saturday against the Cubs.
ImpactRomo also took the loss Friday as a result of a Brandon Belt error. His six losses this season are as many as he had in 202 appearances from 2010-12, but he is still 24-for-28 saving games in his first full season as a closer. Schierholtz's homer was the third he's allowed in 39 innings.
Romo strikes out two to earn save | 07/24/2013 2:09 AM

ImpactRomo entered with the game tied in the ninth inning and gave up two walks and allowed a go-ahead three-run double to A.J. Ellis. Despite the shaky outing, it was just his first loss since June 15. Romo has a 3.03 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP in 36 relief appearances.
Romo blows save, takes loss against Braves | 06/15/2013 8:03 PM
NewsSergio Romo blew his third save of the season on Saturday, allowing two runs in a loss to the Braves.
ImpactRomo hadn't blown a save since May 8, but he melted down quickly on Saturday. The right-hander walked in a run, one of two free passes issued, to tie the game and then allowed a Freddie Freeman single to end it. It was simply a bump in the road and nothing more for the 30-year-old.
Romo is 16-for-18 in save opportunities | 06/11/2013 5:27 AM
NewsSergio Romo is 16-for-18 in save opportunities this season.
ImpactOf interesting statistical note, he has as many wins as walks issued (three apiece) in 2013. Romo is following the same recipe he's used to bake a successful career: Strike out many, walk few. San Francisco's stopper has a 2.52 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 26 strikeouts in 25 innings.
Romo is 12-for-14 in save opportunities | 05/14/2013 11:26 AM
NewsSergio Romo is 12-for-14 in save opportunities this season.
ImpactRomo has been scored upon in each of his last two appearances, so he now has a 3.12 ERA and 19/3 K/BB ratio over 17 1/3 innings. The Giants figures to play it safe with his workload, but he still has the chance to be one of the better fantasy closers.

NewsSergio Romo is not available for Saturday's game against the Cubs.
Andrew Baggarly on Twitter
ImpactRomo has been overworked the last few days and took his first blown save in Friday's loss to the Cubs, so he'll get a scheduled game off. The Giants will likely go with Santiago Casilla in a save situation.
Sergio Romo takes first blown save, loss | 04/12/2013 5:54 PM
NewsSergio Romo took his first blown save and loss after giving up two runs in two-thirds of an inning against the Cubs on Friday.
ImpactRomo gave up a homer to a left-hander (switch-hitter Dioner Navarro) for just the fourth time in his career. While this can likely just be chalked up to a bad day, the fact is that Romo isn't used to this kind of workload he's received the first two weeks. Today was his seventh inning of work in the Giants' 11th game. His career high for innings is 62, and he's thrown 48 and 55 the last two years.
Romo notches sixth save of season | 04/11/2013 6:26 PM
NewsSergio Romo locked down his sixth save of the season Thursday against the Cubs.
ImpactRomo entered the game with a one-run lead and gave up a one-out double to David DeJesus, but he was able to strike out Starlin Castro swinging and set aside Anthony Rizzo looking to end it. The 30-year-old now has a 10/0 K/BB ratio over six scoreless innings this season. The Giants will likely give Romo rest when possible, but he has the potential to be one of the top closers in the game if healthy.
Romo and Casilla likely to sit Wednesday | 04/10/2013 3:17 PM
NewsGiants manager Bruce Bochy would like to stay away from using Sergio Romo and Santiago Casilla on Wednesday.
Joe Stiglich on Twitter
ImpactRomo and Casilla have both pitched on back-to-back days. Bochy plans to check in with them before Wednesday's game, but he's hopeful to give them a break if possible. Jeremy Affeldt or Javier Lopez could be in the mix for a save chance if they are both unavailable.
Sergio Romo blows save for Mexico | 03/07/2013 8:04 PM
NewsSergio Romo allowed two runs on three hits to blow a save chance in Mexico's loss to Italy during World Baseball Classic play Thursday.
ImpactRomo wasn't terribly sharp, but he didn't get much help from his defense. Left fielder Edgar Gonzalez, who has played mostly the infield during his career, misplayed two balls in the ninth, including Anthony Rizzo's go-ahead double. Romo will be the Giants' main closer this season, though manager Bruce Bochy has expressed a desire to keep his workload down.
Romo to get majority of save chances | 02/12/2013 2:42 PM
NewsGiants manager Bruce Bochy said Tuesday that while he expects Sergio Romo to get the majority of the save chances this season, he wants to be careful with his workload.
Ahmed Fareed on Twitter
ImpactRomo staked his claim on the closer role down the stretch last year and into the postseason, but throwing the slider as often as he does can put a lot of strain on his arm. With that in mind, the Giants could give him the occasional day off, opening the door for other relievers to get save chances. Romo should be excellent when called upon, but be careful about counting on him as an elite closer option in fantasy leagues.

ImpactRomo, who is arbitration-eligible for the second time, earned $1.575 million last season while posting a 1.79 ERA, 14 saves and a 63/10 K/BB ratio over 55 1/3 innings. His request isn't unreasonable, but settling around the midpoint of $3.59 million could be a decent compromise.
