|Assets:||Has a bulldog mentality when on the bump. Pitches to contact effectively. Also displays good stuff. Is versatile enough to pitch out of the bullpen as well, if need be.|
|Flaws:||Needs to avoid the big inning, as he tends to surrender too many home runs. Doesn't have a dominant strikeout pitch in the big leagues. Must also avoid injuries.|
|Career Potential:||Solid starter with a little upside.|

Garrett Richards goes eight strong | 07/20/2014 1:19 AM
NewsGarrett Richards limited the Mariners to one run and three hits in eight innings on Saturday.
ImpactRichards wasn't involved in the decision in his latest gem, so his seven-game winning streak is still intact. He's allowed a total of four hits in 15 innings against the Mariners this season, and he's 11-2 with a 2.47 ERA overall. Yeah, he really should have been an All-Star.
Richards dominates Rangers for 11th win | 07/11/2014 11:32 PM
NewsGarrett Richards was brilliant yet again Friday, striking out eight batters over seven scoreless innings in a 3-0 victory over the Rangers.
ImpactRichards gave up five hits and walked a pair in the victory. He now owns a 1.27 ERA over his last eight starts and hasn't lost since May 30. While the 26-year-old wasn't selected to the All-Star team, he has pitched like one during the first half. He'll go into the break at 11-2 with a 2.55 ERA and 127 strikeouts in 123 1/3 innings.
Richards puches out 11 in 6-1 win over Astros | 07/06/2014 9:47 PM
NewsGarrett Richards struck out 11 while allowing one run over 7 1/3 innings in Sunday's 6-1 win over the Astros.
ImpactRichards held the Astros scoreless until the seventh inning, as he gave up six hits and a walk in the outing. The 11 strikeouts were a season high for the 26-year-old, giving him 119 in 116 1/3 innings this season. Richards is 10-2 with a 2.71 ERA and 1.07 WHIP -- and was one of the more notable names left off the AL All-Star roster -- and he'll take on the Rangers in Arlington on Friday.
Richards whiffs nine over eight frames | 07/01/2014 9:34 PM
NewsGarrett Richards allowed three runs on just two hits and two walks while striking out nine in Tuesday's 8-4 win over the White Sox.
ImpactRichards was greeted rudely with a three-run homer by Jose Abreu in the first inning, but he gave up just one hit and no walks the rest of the way. After posting a 1.05 ERA over five June outings, Richards is off to a fine start in July. The right-hander is truly in the midst of a breakout season and will try to keep it going this weekend versus the Astros.
Angels/White Sox postponed due to rain | 06/30/2014 8:32 PM
NewsMonday's game between the Angels and White Sox has been postponed due to rain.

ImpactIt will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Tuesday. Scheduled starters Garrett Richards and Hector Noesi will be pushed back a day.
Richards holds Twins to 2 ER in 7 1/3 innings | 06/26/2014 1:12 AM
NewsGarrett Richards fired 7 2/3 innings of two-run ball in a victory Wednesday over the Twins.
ImpactRichards has gone 4-0 with a 1.06 ERA while posting five consecutive quality starts in June. Tonight accounted for the least dominant of those outings, with Richards striking out five and also walking five. He allowed a homer for the first time this month, a solo long fly to Oswaldo Arcia. Richards (8-2, 2.76 ERA) has one more chance to stamp AL Pitcher of the Month honors for June when he travels to Chicago to square off against the White Sox on Monday.
Garrett Richards holds down Rangers | 06/21/2014 2:07 AM
NewsGarrett Richards limited the Rangers to one run in six innings and struck out seven in a victory Friday.
ImpactRichards had some lowlights a few weeks back, but he's in the running for AL Pitcher of the Month honors for June, with a 3-0 record and a 0.67 ERA in four starts. He's allowed 16 hits, walked six and struck out 30 in 28 innings.
Richards fans 10 over six scoreless innings | 06/15/2014 12:08 AM
NewsGarrett Richards struck out 10 batters over six scoreless innings Saturday against the Braves.
ImpactThe young right-hander was left with a no-decision because Angels closer Ernesto Frieri surrendered four runs in the bottom of the ninth. Anaheim then bounced back to win it in the 13th. Richards yielded only four hits over his six shutout frames, watching his ERA fall to 2.87. He's putting together a fantastic 2014.
Richards handcuffs Oakland to 1 run in win | 06/10/2014 1:06 AM
NewsGarrett Richards scattered four hits, didn't walk a batter and surrendered only one run over seven innings in Monday's 4-1 victory over the A's.
ImpactWe bet the right-hander is savoring this one. Richards only recorded two outs while giving up five runs against the A's on May 30, which left him 0-3 with a 7.50 ERA in six career starts against Oakland. "He was (ticked)," manager Mike Scioscia said after Richards shut out the Astros over eight innings on Wednesday, referring to the right-hander's previous start. "He didn't take that outing in Oakland lying down." Richards, a must-own in fantasy at 5-2 with a 3.09 ERA and 1.10 WHIP, squares off against the Braves on Sunday Night Baseball.
Garrett Richards goes eight scoreless in win | 06/05/2014 12:01 AM
NewsGarrett Richards blanked the Astros for eight innings, striking out nine, in a victory Wednesday.
ImpactThat's quite a turnaround from Friday's outing, when he gave up five runs in two-thirds of an inning versus the A's. Richards threw 80 of his 107 pitches for strikes tonight, and with all of the movement he gets, there's just not much hitters can do against him when he's working like that. He'll get a rematch against the A's next time out, and while that's a tough one, we suggest leaving him active in mixed leagues.
Garrett Richards gets pulled in first | 05/31/2014 1:26 AM
NewsGarrett Richards was yanked after giving up five runs in two-thirds of an inning against the A's on Friday.
ImpactRichards has showed dynamite stuff this year -- he hit 99 mph on the gun tonight -- but the command still isn't there sometimes. Maybe he would have bounced back in this one, much like he did after a rough start against the Astros on May 19, but since he was up to 37 pitches and still not out of the first inning, the Angels did the smart thing and got him out of there before risking an injury. We're still believers in Richards, for what it's worth.
Richards strikes out seven in no-decision | 05/25/2014 7:13 PM
NewsGarrett Richards allowed three runs over seven innings, striking out seven, in a no-decision against the Royals on Sunday.
ImpactComing off his worst start of the season, Richards bounced back to allow just five hits and two walks on the afternoon. The right-hander actually left in line for his second straight loss, but the Angels came back to tie it and eventually win it in the late innings, keeping Richards' record at 4-1. He'll carry a 3.00 ERA and 1.12 WHIP into his Friday start at the A's.
Richards gets knocked around in loss to Stros | 05/20/2014 12:54 AM
NewsGarrett Richards was touched up for five runs on 10 hits over seven innings in Monday's 5-2 loss to the Astros.
ImpactHe struck out only one and walked two. Fantasy owners that giddily started Richards on a two-start week that began with a sweet home matchup against the punchless Astros will undoubtedly wake up perturbed Tuesday morning. This was Richards' worst start of the season, and just the third time he's allowed more than two earned runs in a start. The 25-year-old, now 4-1 with a 2.90 ERA and 1.14 WHIP, will look to get back on track when he hosts the Royals over the weekend.
Richards whiffs eight over seven scoreless | 05/14/2014 4:56 PM
NewsGarrett Richards struck out eight while allowing just five hits and no walks over seven scoreless innings in Wednesday's 3-0 win over the Phillies.
ImpactYet another impressive performance from the young right-hander. Richards cruised for most of the day but did have to wiggle out of a jam in the sixth, getting Ryan Howard to strike out and Marlon Byrd to foulout with runners on second and third. The 25-year-old's results are finally matching his stuff, as he's 4-0 and boasts a 2.45 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 54 strikeouts over 52 innings. He has a good chance to keep it going with home starts versus the Astros and Royals next week.
Garrett Richards goes seven in no-decision | 05/09/2014 11:16 PM
NewsGarrett Richards pitched seven innings and allowed two runs Friday against the Blue Jays.
ImpactNo win for Richards, though he left with a one-run lead. He's 3-0 with four no-decisions in his seven starts. This wasn't his best performances, but we remain very impressed with the way he's throwing. He could be an asset in mixed leagues all year long.
Garrett Richards strikes out nine in win | 05/04/2014 12:48 AM
NewsGarrett Richards beat the Rangers after allowing three runs in six innings on Saturday.
ImpactRichards wasn't at his best tonight, which says a lot about how good he's become. He actually struck out a season-high nine, but he also missed a lot and gave up nine hits. He's still allowed just one homer all year, and he's worth playing in all mixed leagues right now.
Richards whiffs seven in no-decision vs Yanks | 04/27/2014 11:36 PM
NewsGarrett Richards pitched well in Saturday's no-decision against the Yankees, surrendering just two runs on three hits over his seven frames.
ImpactRichards fanned seven while walking two on the night. He held the Yankees off the board until the fifth inning where Ichiro Suzuki plated a run with an RBI groundout. It looked as though he'd cruise to his third victory until Mark Teixeira knotted the game at 2-2 with a solo homer in his final inning of work. Richards has been tremendous on the young season and will carry a 2.53 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 31/16 K/BB ratio into Saturday's matchup against the Rangers.
Garrett Richards holds Nats to one run | 04/21/2014 10:59 PM
NewsGarrett Richards wasn't involved in the decision Monday after allowing one run and one hit in six innings against the Nationals.
ImpactRichards is getting so much fastball movement right now that he's both very tough to hit and quite prone to the walk. We'll take it anyway; he's struck out 24 and posted a 2.52 ERA in 25 innings over his first four starts.
Richards coughs up five runs in no-decision | 04/16/2014 2:24 AM
NewsGarrett Richards allowed five runs on eight hits over seven innings against the A's in a no-decision Tuesday.
ImpactRichards ran into trouble during a three-run third in which he may have been lucky to escape without further damage, and then sailed until he gave up a couple cheapies in his last frame of work on a walk, two singles and a wild pitch. Richards, now 2-0 with a 2.84 ERA and 1.16 WHIP, will get to wield a bat in his next appearance as the Angels square off in Washington against the Nationals on Monday.
Richards holds M's to 1 hit in 7 shutout inn. | 04/10/2014 1:08 AM
NewsGarrett Richards allowed only one hit over seven shutout frames in a 2-0 victory over the Mariners on Wednesday.
ImpactPerhaps he just got sick of watching his teammates get lit up by Seattle. Richards' gem ensured that the Halos wouldn't begin the season 0-5 against the M's, and it also gave him his second victory of the year. He whiffed six and walked three in cutting his ERA to 0.75. Richards can bring it, but he's never been able to translate that impressive arsenal into enough missed bats. On the chance that the light has come on for the 25-year-old, mixed league owners with an open bench spot could do worse for a no-risk flier. Richards and the Angels host the A's on Tuesday.
Garrett Richards terrific in win over Indians | 03/23/2014 8:40 PM
NewsGarrett Richards was terrific in Sunday's victory over the Indians in Cactus League action, firing 6 1/3 shutout innings.
ImpactRichards allowed just three hits and three walks while punching out two. The 25-year-old hurler has secured a spot in the Angels Opening Day rotation, and makes for an interesting flier in the later rounds of mixed league drafts.
Richards solid in 4 2/3 innings vs. White Sox | 03/13/2014 6:02 PM
NewsGarrett Richards allowed two runs in 4 2/3 innings in Thursday's start against the White Sox.
ImpactRichards allowed seven hits and struck out two. The right-hander should open up the season in the rotation. He performed adequately there last season, posting a 4.18 ERA while averaging more than two strikeouts for every one walk in 17 starts.
Richards gets flogged by Arizona on Saturday | 03/08/2014 4:56 PM
NewsGarrett Richards allowed five runs on eight hits over four innings against the Diamondbacks on Saturday.
ImpactOn Monday, Richards tossed three scoreless frames against these very same D'Backs, but his outing this afternoon didn't go as smoothly. He struck out three and walked none, but also surrendered three extra-base hits. Richards posted a 4.16 ERA and 101/44 K/BB ratio over 145 innings across 17 starts and 30 relief appearances last season.
Richards solid in three innings vs. D'Backs | 03/03/2014 5:45 PM
NewsGarrett Richards tossed three scoreless frames in Monday's start against the D'Backs.
ImpactRichards allowed two hits, walked none, and struck out two. He is likely to open up the season at the back of the Angels' starting rotation. He does face some competition, but it won't be fierce. Richards joined the Angels' rotation at the end of July last season and performed well, posting a 3.72 ERA in 13 starts.
Richards struggles in loss to Rangers | 09/28/2013 3:27 PM
NewsGarrett Richards was pulled after giving up six runs (three earned) in 4 1/3 innings in a loss to the Rangers on Saturday.
ImpactThe Angels' defense was terrible behind him, but Richards was far from sharp, allowing six hits and one walk. He also uncorked two wild pitches. He'll finish the year with a 4.16 ERA and 101/44 K/BB ratio in 145 innings across 17 starts and 30 relief appearances. The Angels hope to add some starting pitching help this winter, but Richards stands a good chance to open 2014 in the rotation.
Richards allows seven runs in loss | 09/24/2013 1:26 AM
NewsGarrett Richards was rocked for seven runs on eight hits over 4 2/3 innings Monday in a loss against the A's.
ImpactHe struck out one, walked two and surrendered two homers that accounted for five runs. This clunker is going to be infuriating to hopeful AL-only owners in the playoffs, but Richards will have one last chance to redeem himself on Saturday against the Rangers. He'll enter that start 7-7 with a 4.09 ERA and 1.34 WHIP.
Richards fires seven innings of one-run ball | 09/18/2013 1:40 AM
NewsGarrett Richards hurled seven innings of one-run ball in a no-decision against the A's on Tuesday.
ImpactHe struck out six, walked two and scattered seven hits. Richards has strung together three consecutive quality starts and has won four consecutive outings. He'll take an 8-6 record and 3.77 ERA into Monday's start versus Oakland.
Garrett Richards beats the Blue Jays | 09/12/2013 10:25 PM
NewsGarrett Richards allowed three runs over 6 2/3 innings Thursday in a defeat of the Blue Jays.
ImpactRichards couldn't handle Jose Reyes, but he did a number on the rest of the Blue Jays lineup and that was good enough for a win in a 4-3 game. He's won three straight starts, lowering his ERA from 4.16 to 3.91 in the process.
Richards walks seven, but allows only 1 run | 09/03/2013 1:37 AM
NewsGarrett Richards hurled five innings of one-run ball against the Rays on Monday.
ImpactRichards' control was awful -- he walked a career-high seven batters -- but he only surrendered two hits, one of which was Ben Zobrist's solo home run in the first inning. The right-hander struck out six, and in so doing became the eighth pitched (and second Angel; Bo Belinsky, 1964) to record seven walks and six strikeouts over five frames. None of those pitchers allowed less than two runs. If Richards decides to walk seven more batters on Saturday, logic dictates that the Rangers will be more ruthless in making sure he regret it.
Richards lasts 3 1/3 innings in loss to Rays | 08/28/2013 10:35 PM
NewsGarrett Richards allowed four runs in 3 1/3 innings in a loss to the Rays on Wednesday.
ImpactRichards couldn't do much right, giving up seven hits and three walks in his 3 1/3 innings. The right-hander fell to 4-6 and owns a 4.16 ERA. He'll have his chance for revenge Monday when the Rays visit Anaheim.
Garrett Richards to start on four days rest | 08/25/2013 1:13 AM
NewsGarrett Richards will start on four days rest when the Angels take on the Rays in Tampa Bay on Wednesday.
ImpactRichards wasn't a certainty to even make his next start after leaving Friday's game with a right forearm contusion, but it appears that he's good to go. It's unclear if Jerome Williams, Tuesday's previously scheduled starter, is being completely skipped, or just pushed back in the rotation.
Garrett Richards will make his next start | 08/24/2013 8:00 PM
NewsGarrett Richards is expected to make his next start despite leaving Friday's outing with a right forearm contusion.
Jeff Fletcher on Twitter
ImpactThe 25-year-old is coming off his best outing of the season, a 7 1/3-inning scoreless effort in Friday's victory over the Mariners. He'll get the ball on Thursday against the Rays in Tampa Bay.
Richards exits start with forearm contusion | 08/24/2013 8:39 AM
NewsGarrett Richards left Friday's game in the eighth inning with a right forearm contusion.
Alden Gonzalez on Twitter
ImpactRichards allowed just four hits and two walks while striking out four over 7 1/3 scoreless innings before exiting. The forearm injury isn't believed to be serious, but the Angels will reevaluate him Saturday before determining whether he'll need to miss his next start.
Garrett Richards takes loss in 2-1 game | 08/12/2013 9:58 PM
NewsGarrett Richards took a complete-game loss after allowing two runs in eight innings Monday against the Yankees.
ImpactIt's Richards' fourth straight fine outing since he entered the rotation. There's no doubt that he'll keep his spot following Jason Vargas' return this week, and he should be a nice play in mixed leagues with the Astros and Mariners next on the schedule.
Richards yields three runs in no-decision | 08/07/2013 1:48 AM
NewsGarrett Richards yielded three runs over six innings Tuesday in a no-decision against the Mariners.
ImpactHe struck out five and walked one. Richard has turned in three solid performances since returning to the rotation, allowing five runs over 18 innings. He's increased his pitch count from 78 to 90 to 97 in those three outings. The young right-hander has proven his worth as an AL-only starter. He'll take on the Yankees next week.
Richards goes seven innings in win over Jays | 08/02/2013 1:08 AM
NewsGarrett Richards gave up just two runs over seven innings in an 8-2 win over the Blue Jays on Thursday.
ImpactAfter tossing five scoreless innings in his return to the rotation last time out, Richards held the Blue Jays to just four hits and two walks while striking out four. This matched his longest outing of the season, as he went seven innings twice back in April. The young right-hander should be a solid option in AL-only leagues the rest of the way, with a start against the Rangers at home coming up next week.
Richards throws five scoreless but A's win | 07/27/2013 6:13 PM
NewsGarrett Richards threw five scoreless frames but the Angels fell to the A's on Saturday.
ImpactAnaheim's bullpen -- Dane De La Rosa and Scott Downs to be exact -- yielded three runs after Richards exited. The right-hander allowed only three hits and struck out four, and will carry a 4.33 ERA and 1.29 WHIP into his next start at home against Toronto. He is worth owning in AL-only leagues now that he's locked into a rotation spot.
Garrett Richards moving into rotation | 07/24/2013 8:51 PM
NewsGarrett Richards will take Joe Blanton's spot in the rotation starting on Saturday in Oakland.
Bill Shaikin on Twitter
ImpactRichards has made four starts for the Angels this season but has pitched mostly in relief, posting a 4.66 ERA and 1.32 WHIP over 67 2/3 innings. He'll be limited from a pitch count perspective Saturday but shouldn't take too long to get stretched out.
| 06/05/2013 10:31 AM
NewsGarrett Richards is available out of the Angels' bullpen Wednesday.
Los Angeles Daily News
ImpactRichards missed the last two games with a sprained ankle, but managed to avoid the DL. The injury is not expected to be a concern moving forward.
Garrett Richards exits game with ankle injury | 06/02/2013 7:23 PM
NewsGarrett Richards left Sunday's game with an apparent injury.
Bill Shaikin on Twitter
ImpactRichards suffered an ankle injury while fielding a bunt and was removed from the ninth inning of Sunday's loss. The Angels should provide an update on his status soon.
Garrett Richards earns second career save | 05/24/2013 11:19 PM
NewsGarrett Richards earned the second save of his major league career on Friday, recording the final five outs to preserve a three-run victory over the Royals.
ImpactWith Ernesto Frieri likely unavailable, Angels skipper Mike Scioscia opted to leave Richards in to close it out, and he responded very favorably. In his 1 2/3 innings of work, he surrendered just one hit and picked up a pair of strikeouts. He's still unlikely to become relevant in fantasy leagues unless he's moved back to the rotation.
Garrett Richards expected to move to bullpen | 05/03/2013 6:57 PM
NewsThe Angels are expected to move Garrett Richards back to the bullpen.
Pedro Moura on Twitter
ImpactJerome Williams is expected to take his place in the rotation and should start on Sunday against the Orioles. It's a tough break for Richards, who despite the 5.04 ERA hasn't been terrible in the rotation. He owns a terrific 1.09 WHIP and 23/8 K/BB ratio over his 30 1/3 innings of work on the season and his xFIP sits at 3.56. The talented 24-year-old could receive another shot in the rotation before long.
Garrett Richards gives up seven runs to A's | 05/01/2013 2:12 AM
NewsGarrett Richards was tagged for seven runs in 5 2/3 innings by the A's in Tuesday's loss.
ImpactRichards has a 1.09 WHIP, and he's allowed just three homers in 30 1/3 innings. That's a combination that should result in an ERA in the low-3.00s, maybe even the high-2.00s. Instead, Richards is at 5.04 right now, largely because he's done great with the bases empty and poorly while working from the stretch. We still think he's worth playing in AL-only leagues with Jered Weaver out.
Richards gives up five runs in loss | 04/26/2013 1:04 AM
NewsGarrett Richards yielded five runs in seven innings Thursday in a loss to the Mariners.
ImpactIt was an appealing matchup on paper, so those who streamed him in mixed leagues have to be pretty disappointed. Richards allowed nine hits in the loss, which was more than his first six appearances (including two starts) this season combined. Still, he owns a quality 3.65 ERA and 19/6 K/BB ratio over 24 2/3 innings of work this season and should continue to be useful in AL-only formats while Jered Weaver (arm) is sidelined. He'll face the Athletics next Wednesday in Oakland.
Richards goes seven scoreless in win | 04/20/2013 6:06 PM
NewsGarrett Richards hurled seven scoreless innings Saturday as the Angels defeated the Tigers.
ImpactRichards was fantastic, fanning eight Detroit batters and allowing only two hits over his seven dominant frames. The right-hander is filling in for the injured Jered Weaver and will face off against the Mariners next.
Richards to replace Weaver in rotation | 04/09/2013 3:06 PM
NewsGarrett Richards will replace Jered Weaver (elbow) in the Angels' starting rotation.
Jim Bowden on Twitter
ImpactIt's a tall task to replace Weaver, but Richards has more upside than Jerome Williams. The 24-year-old right-hander posted a 4.69 ERA and 47/34 K/BB ratio in 71 innings over nine starts and 21 relief appearances last season. His strikeout rate hasn't translated to the majors quite yet, but he's worth a look in AL-only formats.
Richards dominant as Angels beat Brewers | 03/23/2013 7:11 PM
NewsGarrett Richards hurled 6 1/3 innings of one-run ball in Saturday's 5-1 victory over the Brewers.
ImpactRichards struck out five and issued just one walk. He has a 1.88 ERA in four outings this spring and should get a look in the Angels' rotation at some point in 2013.
