NewsBraves transferred RHP Kris Medlen from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list with a right elbow injury.
ImpactMedlen, of course, underwent Tommy John surgery earlier this month. He'll obviously miss the 2014 season but should make it back early on in 2015.
Medlen to undergo Tommy John surgery Tues. | 03/17/2014 6:18 PM
NewsKris Medlen is scheduled to undergo Tommy John surgery Tuesday on his right elbow.
Mark Bowman on Twitter
ImpactIt was an inevitable outcome for the 28-year-old right-hander, who had his first Tommy John procedure in August 2010 and is now facing another 12-month recovery period. Medlen will not pitch at all in 2014 and might have to miss the early part of the 2015 campaign as well. The Braves have been hit with multiple haymakers this spring.
Kris Medlen (elbow) to visit Dr. Andrews | 03/14/2014 11:16 AM
NewsKris Medlen (elbow) will visit Dr. James Andrews on Monday.
David O'Brien on Twitter
ImpactMedlen is pretty much resigned to the fact that he'll need Tommy John surgery, but he won't make a final decision until after he meets with Dr. Andrews. It would be the right-hander's second Tommy John procedure.
Medlen to undergo second opinion, TJ likely | 03/12/2014 11:11 AM
NewsKris Medlen will undergo at least one more evaluation before undergoing Tommy John surgery.
Mark Bowman on Twitter
ImpactThe Braves' medical staff is out of town at a convention, which has delayed the process. Medlen told the media that he knew he needed Tommy John surgery as soon as his final pitch Sunday left his hand. His Tuesday stress X-ray essentially indicated the same thing.
SP Medlen: I'm preparing for Tommy John | 03/12/2014 10:45 AM
NewsKris Medlen told the media Wednesday morning that he's spent the past couple days preparing himself to undergo a second Tommy John surgery.
Dave O'Brien on Twitter
ImpactThe Braves have done the same, importing veteran starter Ervin Santana on Wednesday. "Nothing official yet but he has accepted that he's almost certainly going to need TJ surgery," reports Dave O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. It's unfortunate news, but few are equipped to deal with it like Medlen, lauded for his makeup. He missed nearly all of the 2011 season while coming back from his first Tommy John surgery and returned to log a 2.47 ERA over 335 frames in 2012-2013.
Medlen undergoes second opinion on arm | 03/11/2014 11:37 AM
NewsKris Medlen is undergoing a second opinion on his right arm Tuesday morning.
ImpactMedlen's MRI on Monday disclosed ligament damage. To what extend, we aren't yet sure. Dr. James Andrews was preparing to give Medlen a second opinion, but he's been jumped in line. Braves general manager Frank Wren said Medlen will be evaluated by the vaunted practitioner later this week. "For us to put a complete diagnosis on it now would be premature," Wren said. Medlen missed nearly all of the 2011 season while coming back from Tommy John surgery and returned to log a dynamite 2.47 ERA over 335 innings the past two campaigns.
Medlen's MRI reveals ligament 'involvement' | 03/11/2014 11:05 AM
NewsAn MRI on Kris Medlen's right arm revealed "some involvement of the ligament."
Dave O'Brien on Twitter
Impact"Involvement" is a generous reading of "damage." Dr. James Andrews is expected to examine the limb in question and proffer a second opinion. Andrews, Atlanta fans probably grimace to recall, performed Medlen's previous Tommy John surgery. Arm MRI's are notoriously difficult to read after the procedure, so the famous doctor's involvement makes sense. Medlen left his Grapefruit League appearance Sunday against the Mets after experiencing pain after a fourth-inning pitch. It's too soon to speculate on Medlen's 2014 status, but none of this is good news.
Braves' Medlen undergoes MRI on right arm | 03/10/2014 4:47 PM
NewsKris Medlen underwent a scheduled MRI on his right arm Monday afternoon.
Mark Bowman on Twitter
ImpactThe Braves' medical staff will review the results and should narrow down a diagnosis by Tuesday morning. Medlen left his Grapefruit League appearance Sunday against the Mets after suffering some sort of arm injury on a fourth-inning pitch. It's being called a right forearm strain for now. Medlen, 28, owns a spectacular 2.47 ERA in 335 innings since the start of the 2012 season.

Kris Medlen would start Game 5 if necessary | 10/06/2013 5:23 PM
NewsBraves manager Fredi Gonzalez confirmed Sunday that Kris Medlen would draw the start in Game 5 of the NLDS if necessary.
Kevin McAlpin on Twitter
ImpactMedlen was knocked around a bit in Game 1, but was the Braves most dominant starter heading into the postseason, and still owns the confidence of his manager. His opposition in that pivotal game could be either Clayton Kershaw or Zack Greinke depending on how the rest of the series develops.
Kris Medlen knocked around by Dodgers | 10/04/2013 12:19 AM
NewsKris Medlen was charged with five runs on nine hits and a walk over four frames in Thursday's loss to the Dodgers.
ImpactMedlen didn't get any help from his defense in the Dodgers' two-run second inning, but that doesn't excuse the poor effort from the right-hander. Of course, against Clayton Kershaw, it might not have mattered if Medlen was really on his game. The Braves' right-hander is lined up to face Kershaw again in Game 5 should the series advance that far.
Kris Medlen twirls eight scoreless in victory | 09/27/2013 10:03 PM
NewsKris Medlen twirled eight scoreless innings in Friday's victory over the Phillies, scattering just two singles and a pair of walks along the way.
ImpactMedlen whiffed seven in the dominant performance. After a rough start to his season, Medlen has really come on strong as the Braves prepare to head into the postseason. He wraps up his regular season with a 15-12 record, 3.11 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 157/47 K/BB ratio over 197 innings. He doesn't quite have the elite strikeout rate of an upper echelon starter in mixed leagues, but should still be one of the top 25 starting pitchers off the board on draft day next Spring.

NewsKris Medlen surrendered three runs over six-plus innings in a loss to the Cardinals on Friday.
ImpactMedlen served up a go-ahead solo homer to Matt Holliday in the sixth inning and was pulled after giving up back-to-back hits to begin the bottom of the seventh. NewsKris Medlen allowed two runs on eight hits and had four strikeouts over six innings in a win on Sunday night against the Cardinals.
ImpactIt was a much needed win for Medlen, who had a 7.40 ERA over his last four starts. Medlen could be moved to the bullpen when Paul Maholm returns from the disabled list.

NewsKris Medlen indicated after Tuesday's game that he knows he knows he could be moved to the bullpen.
ImpactMedlen allowed four runs over 5 1/3 innings Tuesday against the Mets for his third straight loss. With Alex Wood and Brandon Beachy both expected to join the Braves' rotation in the next week, the clock is ticking on him as a starter. "I know it's been brought up," said Medlen. "I said I don't want to go to the 'pen, but I didn't say I wouldn't go to the 'pen. I think there's a difference. If they think that is where I'll be most effective to help the team win, then obviously I'm going to do that." Medlen is slated to make his next start Sunday against the Cardinals, but a change could come after that. Fantasy owners should get a backup plan in place.

Kris Medlen gives up four runs in loss | 07/12/2013 11:21 PM
NewsKris Medlen was chased after giving up four runs over four-plus innings in Friday's loss to the Reds.
ImpactHe gave up nine hits in the loss. Medlen was pulled from the game after he loaded the bases to begin the top of the fifth inning. His line could have looked much worse, but Alex Wood managed to escape with just one run scoring in the frame. Medlen has allowed 16 runs in 22 1/3 innings over his last four starts, with his ERA increasing from 2.96 to 3.64 on the year. He's currently on pace for a career-high in innings pitched, so it will be interesting to see whether the Braves consider moving him to the bullpen once Brandon Beachy (elbow) is deemed ready. Just something to keep an eye on.
Medlen struggles to worst start of season | 07/07/2013 6:13 PM
NewsIn his worst start of the season, Kris Medlen allowed seven runs -- six earned -- in 5 1/3 innings against the Phillies on Sunday.
ImpactIn falling to 6-8, Medlen surrendered three walks and eight hits, striking out five. It's too early to be concerned, but Medlen was coming off an outing where he struck out just one Marlin. After beginning the season 1-6, however, Medlen had won five of six starts entering play on Sunday. He gets the Reds on Friday.

NewsKris Medlen allowed three runs -- one earned -- in seven innings as the Braves topped the Mets 5-3 on Wednesday.
ImpactMedlen bounced back from a loss his last time out to limit the Mets to just six hits in his seven innings. He also struck out seven while walking none, continuing a trend in his last six starts in which he has a 33:3 K:BB ratio. His performance of late is much more like the Medlen we saw in 2012 than it was earlier in the season. His next start is scheduled against the Royals in KC on Tuesday.
Medlen allows four runs in loss to Giants | 06/14/2013 11:44 PM
NewsKris Medlen allowed four runs on a season-high nine hits over six innings Friday in a loss to the Giants.
ImpactMedlen struck out four and walked none in the loss. This was the first time he had allowed more than three earned runs in a start since way back on April 27. There has been some speculation about Medlen moving to the bullpen, but any such talk will be put on hold now that Brandon Beachy's return has been delayed due to a tender elbow. He currently lines up to face the Mets next week at home.
Medlen not interested in returning to bullpen | 06/11/2013 10:48 AM
NewsKris Medlen said Monday that he doesn't want to return to the bullpen.
ImpactThe Braves will have a tough decision to make soon, as Brandon Beachy (elbow) is nearing the end of his rehab assignment. Julio Teheran has pitched really well of late, so some have speculated that a return to the bullpen could be in Medlen's future. "I'll let it be known that I don't want to go down there (to the bullpen)," said Medlen. "I don't. At all. But it's out of my hands. I mean, if it happens, obviously it happens. I'm a team player." It might not be such a bad idea in the short-term, as Medlen is currently on pace for nearly 200 innings, which would be a big jump from the 151 1/3 innings he threw between the majors and minors last season.
Kris Medlen beats Pirates, improves to 2-6 | 06/03/2013 10:55 PM
NewsKris Medlen won for just the second time this year Monday by holding the Pirates to an unearned run over seven innings.
ImpactMedlen, who left his last start when he was hit in the leg by a comebacker, had his way with an Andrew McCutchen-less Pirates lineup tonight, striking out six and walking none. His future in the Braves rotation is cloudy with Brandon Beachy on track to return later this month, but it's not as though he's pitched badly; he has a 3.14 ERA this season.

NewsKris Medlen (calf) ran Friday and said he will have no problems preparing for his next scheduled start on Monday.
Mark Bowman on Twitter

Kris Medlen exits start with calf contusion | 05/29/2013 8:27 PM
NewsKris Medlen left Wednesday's start against the Blue Jays with a left upper calf contusion.
David O'Brien on Twitter
ImpactMedlen was hit on the leg by a comebacker in the second inning and the calf must have tightened up on him. The good news is that the Braves expect him to be fine for his next start. Medlen allowed three runs on four hits and a walk over two frames before exiting.
Kris Medlen Ks nine in no-decision vs. Mets | 05/25/2013 9:00 AM
NewsKris Medlen yielded three runs in six innings against the Mets on Friday.
ImpactMedlen struck out a season-high nine in the no-decision, including three whiffs of Ike Davis. While he hasn't been anywhere near as dominant as he was last year, he has allowed three earned runs or fewer in nine out of his 10 starts this this season. He'll carry a 3.16 ERA into a matchup against the Blue Jays next week.

NewsKris Medlen allowed just one (unearned) run in seven innings as the Braves beat the Dodgers 3-1 on Saturday.
ImpactMedlen was superb, yielding just two hits and three walks while striking out five batters. It was a nice bounceback effort for the talented right-hander, who struggled on Sunday against the Giants. He will carry an improving 3.02 ERA and 1.32 WHIP into his next start against the light-hitting Mets.
| 05/12/2013 9:20 PM
NewsKris Medlen allowed three runs on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings Sunday in a loss to the Giants.
ImpactMedlen gave up home runs to Pablo Sandoval and Brandon Belt in consecutive innings, and struggled with his control (four walks) before he was removed in the sixth inning after working up a high pitch count. Despite his solid 3.44 ERA, Medlen has just one win this season. He'll look to get things turned around in his next start vs. the Dodgers
Medlen takes tough no-decision vs. Reds | 05/07/2013 11:31 PM
NewsKris Medlen allowed two runs in seven innings, but he failed to get the win as the Reds came back in the bottom of the ninth inning on Tuesday.
ImpactMedlen hasn't had much luck this season, as he's 1-4 but has pitched well enough to deserve a better fate in many of his starts. He's not the pitcher he was in 2012, but this year's version is still plenty serviceable for fantasy purposes. Continue to start him going forward, with his next start coming Sunday against the Giants.
Medlen gives up five runs in loss to Tigers | 04/27/2013 4:19 PM
NewsKris Medlen fell to 1-3 on the year after he was tagged for five runs in 5 1/3 innings against the Tigers on Saturday.
ImpactMedlen was touched up for a career-high 10 hits in the loss, including two home runs. He struck out three and walked two. Medlen allowed three runs or less in his previous four outings this season, so we wouldn't make too much out of today's clunker. He'll attempt to rebound next Thursday when he faces the Nationals in Atlanta.
Kris Medlen solid in loss | 04/22/2013 1:22 PM
NewsKris Medlen registered a quality start but suffered a loss Sunday, giving up three runs over six frames against the Pirates.
ImpactMedlen allowed seven hits, walked one and struck out six. The diminutive righty out-pitched his counterpart, Jonathan Sanchez, but the Pirates' bullpen was able to hold the Braves in check. Medlen has managed just one win in four tries despite a 2.16 ERA and 1.16 WHIP. He'll try to get in the win column next weekend in Detroit.
Medlen tough as Braves beat Royals | 04/16/2013 9:54 PM
NewsKris Medlen allowed two runs -- one earned -- over seven innings as the Braves beat the Royals on Tuesday.
ImpactMedlen's first start of the year was a bit shaky, but he's been on his game in the two starts following. Jeremy Guthrie matched him pitch-for-pitch, so Medlen didn't get a win for his effort, but he's now got a 1.42 ERA on the season. It looks like his 2012 was more fact than fiction, and he'll get another favorable matchup Sunday against the Pirates.
Medlen back on track Tuesday vs. Marlins | 04/09/2013 9:51 PM
NewsKris Medlen allowed one run in seven innings as the Braves beat the Marlins 3-2 on Tuesday.
ImpactThis is more like what we expected from the 27-year-old in his 2012 encore, even if it was against the lowly Marlins. Medlen allowed just three hits despite striking out only one. With a few off days built into the schedule, his next start will likely be against the Royals next Tuesday.
Kris Medlen gives up two runs in loss | 04/04/2013 9:53 PM
NewsKris Medlen yielded two runs in five innings Thursday in a loss to the Phillies.
ImpactIt was Medlen's first loss as a starting pitcher since 2010. He was shaky all spring, so it wasn't a surprise to see him stumble a bit out of the gate, even if he did a good job of minimizing the damage in this one (he allowed six hits and walked four). We remain optimistic.
Kris Medlen gives up six runs to Nats | 03/24/2013 4:04 PM
NewsKris Medlen was tagged for six runs in five innings by the Nationals on Sunday.
ImpactMedlen's spring ERA is up to 7.23, but he does have a solid 17/3 K/BB ratio in 23 2/3 innings. Of course, he's in for something of a comedown this year after posting a remarkable 1.57 ERA in 138 innings last season. Still, we're pretty optimistic about his future. He projects as a top-20 starter this year.
Kris Medlen gives up nine runs to Phils | 03/18/2013 4:08 PM
NewsKris Medlen was lit up for nine runs in five innings by the Phillies on Monday.
ImpactAll nine runs were earned, even though the defense behind him was really pretty horrible. The worst of the non-errors was a fly to right-center that neither B.J. Upton nor Jason Heyward decided to catch. It was ruled a single. We see no reason to be concerned about the inflated ERA.
Kris Medlen exits after being hit by liner | 03/13/2013 8:53 PM
NewsKris Medlen left Wednesday's start after 4 2/3 innings after being hit by a comebacker for the second time in the game.
David O'Brien on Twitter
ImpactMedlen is expected to be fine, as he stayed in the dugout rather than go to the clubhouse. The Braves were likely just playing it safe since he was expected to be removed after one more out, anyway. The righty held the Marlins scoreless, allowing just two hits and no walks while striking out three. He has a 2.63 ERA this spring.
Kris Medlen goes two scoreless | 02/25/2013 5:48 PM
NewsKris Medlen pitched two scoreless innings Monday versus the Marlins.
ImpactMedlen decided to skip the World Baseball Classic because his wife is due to give birth next month, but that doesn't figure to have much of an effect on his preparation for the season. He appears to be in line to start the second game of the year.
Kris Medlen pulls out of WBC | 01/25/2013 3:12 PM
NewsKris Medlen has withdrawn from Team USA's roster for the World Baseball Classic due to the impending birth of his first child.
David O'Brien on Twitter
ImpactWe suppose that's a good reason. Medlen, who posted a 1.57 ERA while going 10-1 across 138 innings last season, is probably better off preparing for the season in spring training, anyway.
Medlen avoids arbitration with $2.6M deal | 01/18/2013 3:18 PM
NewsBraves avoided arbitration with RHP Kris Medlen by agreeing to a one-year, $2.6 million contract.
ImpactMedlen had been projected to earn about $2 million in his first year of arbitration, so it's nice little score. The right-hander was one of baseball's biggest surprises in 2012, posting a 1.57 ERA while going 10-1 across 138 innings. He'll be a key cog in the Braves' 2013 rotation.
