Starter Edinson Volquez has agreed to a two-year, $20 million contract with the Kansas City Royals according to CBS Sports reporter Jon Heyman. | 12/17/2014 6:03 PM
NewsStarter Edinson Volquez has agreed to a two-year, $20 million contract with the Kansas City Royals according to CBS Sports reporter Jon Heyman.
ImpactVolquez had a great bounce back year with a 3.04 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and nearly twice as many strikeouts as walks over 192 2/3 innings in 2014 with the Pirates. Volquez, however, was one of the worst pitchers in the league in 2013, and Pittsburgh has become a pitcher's heaven, where down-and-out pitchers revitalize their careers. Francisco Liriano and A.J. Burnett were the first to do that with the Pirates and now Volquez. Now let's see if Volquez can be better than Burnett was after he left Pittsburgh.
Pirates starter Edinson Volquez is 9-1 with a 1.85 ERA in his last 17 starts going into his NL Wild Card game start on Wednesday. | 10/01/2014 10:35 AM
NewsPirates starter Edinson Volquez is 9-1 with a 1.85 ERA in his last 17 starts going into his NL Wild Card game start on Wednesday.
ImpactVolquez has also allowed just four earned runs in his last 34 2/3 innings at home. In his last two starts, each lasting seven innings, he did not yield a single run. Experts can second guess the Pirates rotation strategy this week all they want, but Pittsburgh has a hot pitcher on the mound, in front of an electric crowd at home, and with the support of one of the hottest offenses in September.

NewsPirates starter Edinson Volquez pitches gem against the Braves.
ImpactHe allowed no runs on four hits, over seven innings of work, and also struck out 10. He finishes the year at 13-7 with an impressive 3.04 ERA. He will be a highly sought after free agent this offseason.
Pirates starter Edinson Volquez continued his hot pitching of late, Saturday versus Milwaukee. | 09/20/2014 10:35 PM
NewsPirates starter Edinson Volquez continued his hot pitching of late, Saturday versus Milwaukee.
ImpactHe hit Ryan Braun, which casued warnings to be issued, eventually resulting in the ejection of Matt Garza. However, Volquez did not allow a run on three hits and seven innings. He did not factor into the decision, and owns a healthy 3.15 ERA.
Pirates starter Edinson Volquez pitched seven and 2/3 innings on Friday, allowing one run on three hits, striking out six and walking three. Volquez earned a no-decision. | 08/29/2014 9:42 PM
NewsPirates starter Edinson Volquez pitched seven and 2/3 innings on Friday, allowing one run on three hits, striking out six and walking three. Volquez earned a no-decision.
ImpactVolquez pitched six hitless innings to start Friday. He did not get the win because Pittsburgh scored its two runs in the bottom of the eighth, but the 31-year-old continues to pitch well. Volquez is 7-1 with a 2.18 ERA in his last 12 starts.
Pirates starter Edinson Volquez has gone 6-1 with a 2.30 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP over his last nine starts. | 08/12/2014 10:34 PM
NewsPirates starter Edinson Volquez has gone 6-1 with a 2.30 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP over his last nine starts.
ImpactVolquez' ERA climbed to 4.67 after he allowed eight runs in 2 1/3 innings on June 18, but it dropped to 3.67, its lowest point since April 27, Tuesday when he allowed two runs on five hits in six innings against the Tigers.
Volquez pitches complete game gem vs. Cards | 07/10/2014 10:25 PM
NewsEdinson Volquez pitched a complete game gem against the Cardinals, allowing just one run en route to a win on Thursday.
ImpactIt's only the second complete game of the veteran's career and his first since July 19, 2012. The right-hander has been nearly untouchable in his last four starts, having posted a 0.90 over 30 innings. On this night, Volquez allowed six hits, walked two, and struck out five. In what has been a renaissance season, Volquez will carry a 3.65 ERA, a 1.21 WHIP, and a 73/37 K/BB ratio into the All-Star break.
Volquez goes seven strong to beat Phillies | 07/05/2014 7:01 PM
NewsEdinson Volquez tossed seven innings of one-run ball Saturday in the Pirates' 3-2 win over the Phillies.
ImpactThe only mistake he made was turned into a solo home run by Cody Asche. Volquez was also sharp on June 23 against the Rays and June 29 against the Mets, now boasting a surprising 3.88 ERA and 1.24 WHIP in 102 innings this season. We'll see how long it lasts.
Volquez fires six scoreless against the Mets | 06/29/2014 4:58 PM
NewsEdinson Volquez evened out his record at 6-6, firing six shutout innings as the Pirates defeated the Mets 5-2 on Sunday.
ImpactVolquez has been very hit-or-miss for the Pirates this season; Sunday was very much a "hit". The right-hander allowed eight hits and walked one while striking out seven, and was able to dance out of danger on multiple occasions. As a result, Volquez lowered his ERA to 4.07 and now has a 1.24 WHIP and a 63/31 K/BB ratio. He'll go up against the Phillies at home in his next outing.
Edinson Volquez shuts down Rays | 06/23/2014 11:23 PM
NewsEdinson Volquez pitched eight innings and allowed just one run to beat the Rays on Monday.
ImpactIt's the first time since his 2012 shutout of Houston and the second time since 2010 that Volquez has completed eight innings in a start. He did so even though he struck out just one batter. The performance lowered his ERA from 4.67 to 4.35. He's still only an option in NL-only leagues and not a great one in those.
Volquez battered by the Reds, falls to 4-6 | 06/18/2014 11:49 PM
NewsEdinson Volquez was shelled by the Reds on Tuesday, allowing eight runs in 2 1/3 innings.
ImpactMost of the damage occurred in a seven-run third inning. Not exactly the follow-up to last Thursday's performance (7 IP, 0 ER vs. the Cubs) that the Pirates were looking for. The right-hander didn't allow any home runs, but served up six hits and walked three while striking out two. Volquez, now with a 4.67 ERA, a 1.26 WHIP, and a 55/28 K/BB ratio, will look to rebound in his next start against the Rays on the road.
Volquez blanks Cubs over 7 frames in a win | 06/12/2014 11:41 PM
NewsEdinson Volquez improved to 4-5, tossing seven shutout innings in Thursday's win over the Cubs.
ImpactAfter some struggles between late April and mid-May, Volquez has gotten things under control. He entered Thursday's start with a 3.27 ERA in his previous four starts and kept the good times rolling against the Cubs. The right-hander allowed seven hits, walked two, and struck out five. Volquez lowered his ERA to 3.89 and has a 1.18 WHIP and a 53/25 K/BB ratio in 78 2/3 innings. He'll face the Reds at home in his next start.
Volquez fans six in victory over Dodgers | 06/01/2014 11:35 PM
NewsEdinson Volquez pitched well in Sunday's victory over the Dodgers, allowing just two runs on five hits over five frames.
ImpactVolquez racked up six strikeouts on the evening while walking just one. Justin Turner was his nemesis on this particular evening, delivering an RBI single in the second inning and socking a solo home run in the fourth. The inconsistent right-hander will carry a 4.25 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 44/21 K/BB ratio into Saturday's tilt against the Brewers.
Volquez allows 2 ER in 5 IP, but gets ND | 05/27/2014 11:17 PM
NewsEdinson Volquez got the no-decision, allowing two runs over five innings in Tuesday's loss to the Mets.
ImpactWhile Volquez wasn't dominant by any stretch, he has put together back-to-back solid outings after watching his ERA balloon to 4.71 after his May 17 start. The right-hander allowed four hits, walked five, and struck out six in the effort. Volquez will take his 4.30 ERA into his next start on the road against the Dodgers.
Volquez's solid outing results in second win | 05/22/2014 10:42 PM
NewsEdinson Volquez earned his second win of the season, allowing one run over six innings as the Pirates defeated the Nationals 3-1 on Thursday.
ImpactThursday's outing was about as good as Volquez has been all season. The right-hander made only one damaging mistake -- a solo home run to Ian Desmond -- and otherwise stayed out of trouble. He allowed three hits, walked two, and struck out four. Volquez has a 4.37 ERA and a 32/15 K/BB ratio which he will take into next week's start on the road against the Mets.
Volquez allows five runs in loss to Yankees | 05/17/2014 7:13 PM
NewsEdinson Volquez surrendered five earned runs in 6 1/3 innings Saturday in a loss to the Yankees.
ImpactThe Yankees tagged Volquez for four home runs. He has now allowed 20 earned runs over his last 21 2/3 innings, and is no longer a safe streamer in fantasy leagues.
Pirates/Yankees game postponed due to rain | 05/16/2014 1:02 PM
NewsFriday's game between the Pirates and Yankees has been postponed due to rain.
Danny Knobler on Twitter
ImpactIt will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Sunday. Scheduled starters Edinson Volquez and David Phelps will be pushed back a day to Saturday.
Volquez surrenders three runs in no-decision | 05/10/2014 10:49 PM
NewsEdinson Volquez allowed three earned runs in 4 2/3 innings Saturday in a no-decision versus St. Louis.
ImpactVolquez walked four and surrendered four hits. It could have been a truly awful evening, but the Cardinals again struggled to drive baserunners home and the Pirates' offense got to Lance Lynn for four runs on nine hits. Volquez has allowed 15 earned runs over his last 15 1/3 innings. There is more ugliness ahead.
Volquez shelled for six runs in loss to Jays | 05/04/2014 4:33 PM
NewsEdinson Volquez was hammered for six earned runs in five innings Sunday in a loss to the Blue Jays.
ImpactVolquez was also shelled for six runs last week against the Cardinals and has watched his ERA inflate to 4.19 after an exceptional start to the 2014 regular season. This regression should come as no surprise, and the 1-3 right-hander is a poor fantasy bet going forward.
Volquez gives up six runs in loss to Cards | 04/27/2014 6:17 PM
NewsEdinson Volquez allowed six runs on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings in a loss to the Cardinals on Sunday.
ImpactVolquez' day could have looked a lot different if the Pirates had been able to turn a routine double play in the sixth inning. Instead, the relay throw pulled first baseman Ike Davis off the bag, leaving runners at first and third with two outs. An Allen Craig single extended the Cardinals' lead to 3-0, and Jhonny Peralta followed with a three-run homer -- his second of the afternoon -- that ended Volquez' day. The right-hander struck out two and walked one in the start. He'll take the hill next against the Blue Jays on Sunday.
Edinson Volquez pitches seven strong in win | 04/17/2014 10:45 PM
NewsEdinson Volquez allowed two runs over seven innings in defeating the Brewers on Thursday.
ImpactVolquez had an ugly spring, but this makes three strong starts in a row for him to start the year. He actually threw just 77 pitches tonight, which is remarkable efficient for him. His GB/FB ratio was just average, but staying away from the walks (one) and homers (none) was enough for him to hold down the righty-dominated Brewers lineup for the second time in six days.
Volquez holds Brewers to one earned in loss | 04/12/2014 10:16 PM
NewsEdinson Volquez held the Brewers to two runs -- one earned -- over 6 1/3 innings Saturday in a no-decision.
ImpactThe Pirates lost the game 3-2. It was another solid outing from Volquez, who limited the Cardinals to one earned run over 5 2/3 innings last week in his first start of the 2014 regular season. It's early of course, but the right-hander is looking like a sneaky-good offseason pickup for the Pirates at one year, $5 million.
Volquez leads Bucs over Cards in 2014 debut | 04/06/2014 4:22 PM
NewsEdinson Volquez limited the Cardinals to one earned run over 5 2/3 innings Sunday in the Pirates' 2-1 win.
ImpactVolquez probably could have gone longer -- he was pulled at 81 pitches -- but Pirates manager Clint Hurdle decided not to press his luck. The right-hander had a flat fastball but good-looking breaking stuff and the struggling St. Louis lineup managed just three hits. Volquez is not a good fantasy bet this season, despite his impressive-seeming regular-season debut Sunday against a division-rival.

NewsEdinson Volquez will make his next start in extended spring training.

ImpactVolquez was originally scheduled to start on Wednesday against the Twins, but the Pirates have changed plans. The veteran right-hander has really struggled this spring, but he remains on track to make his first regular season start on April 6 against the Cardinals.
Volquez scratched from Wednesday start | 03/25/2014 10:11 AM
NewsEdinson Volquez will not make his next scheduled start Wednesday against the Twins.

ImpactNo word yet on the reason for the change. Brandon Cumpton will start in his place.
Edinson Volquez expected to crack rotation | 03/16/2014 11:19 AM
NewsPirates general manager Neal Huntington indicated Sunday that Edinson Volquez will be part of the team's rotation in spite of his struggles this spring.
Travis Sawchik on Twitter
ImpactVolquez has allowed 13 runs -- 11 earned -- while walking five batters in nine innings this spring, but the Pirates evidently aren't overly concerned with the results. With Volquez virtually assured of a starting job, that means Jeff Locke will likely be in the bullpen or possibly at Triple-A. Volquez can't be trusted in fantasy leagues.
Edinson Volquez gives up four runs to Rays | 03/15/2014 5:04 PM
NewsEdinson Volquez yielded four runs -- two earned -- and five hits in 3 1/3 innings Saturday in a loss to the Rays.
ImpactThat's improvement, sadly enough. The Pirates want Volquez in their rotation, but they can't stick him there if he doesn't make significant progress over the next two weeks. He's allowed 13 runs -- 11 earned -- with an 8/5 K/BB ratio in nine innings this spring.
Pirates ink Volquez to one-year, $5M contract | 12/13/2013 8:28 PM
NewsPirates signed RHP Edinson Volquez to a one-year, $5 million contract.
ImpactThe Pirates have had a knack for taking pitchers off the scrap heap and getting useful innings out of them, but Volquez was pretty terrible in 2013. He should be assured of a spot in the Pirates rotation and makes for an interesting flyer in the later rounds of mixed league drafts.
Report: Pirates ink Volquez to 1-yr deal | 12/11/2013 5:04 PM
NewsFOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Pirates have signed Edinson Volquez to a one-year, $5 million contract, pending a physical.
Ken Rosenthal on Twitter
ImpactRay Searage's latest reclamation project, Volquez posted an ugly 5.71 ERA and 142/77 K/BB ratio over 170 1/3 innings this past season with the Padres and Dodgers. His control will likely always be an issue, but we wouldn't rule out a return to fantasy relevancy.
Edinson Volquez added to NLCS roster | 10/11/2013 12:17 PM
NewsThe Dodgers have added Edinson Volquez and Carlos Marmol to their NLCS roster.
Ken Gurnick on Twitter
ImpactThey're taking the spots of Paco Rodriguez and Chris Capuno. Volquez's addition makes sense, as he offers protection for Ricky Nolasco (19 runs over his last 12 regular season innings) and Hyun-Jin Ryu (injury concerns). However, if either pitcher has to play a big role during the NLCS, the Dodgers are in trouble.
Edinson Volquez limits Giants to two runs | 09/27/2013 1:46 AM
NewsEdinson Volquez yielded two runs in five innings Thursday in a no-decision versus the Giants.
ImpactVolquez is eligible for the Dodgers' postseason roster, and he's made a bit of a case by giving up three runs or fewer in four straight starts. Still, it seems like a long shot that he'll be included. He's 0-2 with a 4.18 ERA for the Dodgers after going 9-10 with a 6.01 ERA for San Diego.
Edinson Volquez takes loss to old team | 09/21/2013 1:59 AM
NewsEdinson Volquez took a loss to the Padres after allowing two runs -- one earned -- in 6 1/3 innings Friday.
ImpactVolquez was effective against his old team, but there was no run support to be had with the Dodgers trotting out their 'C' team. Volquez will probably get another start next week as the Dodgers set things up for October.
Edinson Volquez to start despite blister | 09/18/2013 11:10 PM
NewsEdinson Volquez is expected to start on Friday against the Padres despite a blister on his right thumb.
ImpactVolquez has had the blister issue off and on this season, but it feels better after treatment and a covering of artificial skin. He holds a 5.40 ERA over 16 2/3 innings since joining the Dodgers.
Volquez fans seven in no-decsion vs. Giants | 09/15/2013 7:35 PM
NewsEdinson Volquez pitched fairly well in a no-decision against the Giants on Sunday, allowing three runs on five hits over his 5 2/3 innings of work.
ImpactVolquez whiffed seven in the ballgame, and perhaps the most surprising factor is that he didn't issue a walk. He cruised through most of the Giants lineup without issue all afternoon, but Hunter Pence socked a pair of home runs against him and plated all three runs. With Chris Capuano hurting, Volquez is expected to remain in the Dodgers rotation, and will get the ball again on Friday to take on the Padres in San Diego.
Volquez gives up 3 runs over 6 innings | 09/11/2013 1:52 AM
NewsEdinson Volquez allowed three runs on four hits over six innings of a no-decision against the Diamondbacks on Tuesday.
ImpactThe right-hander struck out five and walked one. Volquez was cruising along before Didi Gregorius' two-run homer in the fifth, but this start should still be viewed as a rousing success. Prior to this evening, Volquez hadn't reached six innings and allowed less than four runs since August 6.
Edinson Volquez to start on Wednesday | 09/02/2013 8:04 PM
NewsEdinson Volquez will start on Wednesday in Colorado.
Ken Gurnick on Twitter
ImpactThe move allows the Dodgers to push Hyun-Jin Ryu back to Friday, giving him a couple extra days of rest. It's possible Volquez could wind up staying in the rotation at Chris Capuano's expense if he pitches well. We're not betting on it, though, especially in Colorado.
Volquez to pitch out of Dodgers bullpen | 08/30/2013 7:22 PM
NewsEdinson Volquez will report to the Dodgers in time for Friday's game, and will work out of the bullpen initially.
Bill Shaikin on Twitter
ImpactThere had been speculation that Volquez could conceivably replace Chris Capuano as the fifth starter in the Dodgers rotation, but that will not be the case at least initially. After a disastrous 142 1/3 innings with the Padres, Volquez will attempt to resurrect his season in Los Angeles.
Dodgers agree to minors deal with Volquez | 08/28/2013 9:37 PM
NewsDodgers signed RHP Edinson Volquez.
Ken Rosenthal on Twitter
ImpactIt's a major league contract that will pay Volquez the major league minimum. The 30-year-old right-hander was released by the Padres on Tuesday after posting a brutal 6.01 ERA and 1.67 WHIP in 142 1/3 innings. He seems doubtful to make a positive impact in Los Angeles.
Dodgers have "serious interest" in Volquez | 08/28/2013 9:02 PM
NewsAccording to Buster Olney of ESPN, the Dodgers have shown "serious interest" in signing Edinson Volquez.
Buster Olney on Twitter
ImpactVolquez was released by the Padres on Tuesday after posting a dismal 6.01 ERA and 1.67 WHIP over 142 1/3 innings with the Friars this season. While Chris Capuano has struggled as the Dodgers fifth starter, it's difficult to imagine the Dodgers would trust Volquez in their rotation during a pennant race.
Padres release right-hander Edinson Volquez | 08/27/2013 4:35 PM
NewsPadres released RHP Edinson Volquez.
ImpactVolquez was designated for assignment on Saturday and did not get claimed on waivers. The 30-year-old right-hander posted a 4.96 ERA and 1.55 WHIP in 325 total innings (spanning two seasons) with the Padres. He will look to revitalize his career with a new organization.
Padres designate Volquez for assignment | 08/24/2013 6:00 PM
NewsPadres designate RHP Edinson Volquez for assignment.
ImpactHow the once mighty have fallen. Volquez has been a trainwreck in San Diego this season, going 9-10 with an abysmal 6.01 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and 116/69 K/BB ratio in 142 1/3 innings. He still has talent, so he'll likely attract interest as a free agent, but isn't trustworthy in any fantasy format.
Volquez doesn't make it out of 1st inning | 08/24/2013 1:59 PM
NewsEdinson Volquez suffered through an epic implosion on Friday night, allowing six runs -- five earned -- on five hits and two walks over 2/3 of an inning against the Cubs.
ImpactNate Schierholtz' three-run homer to right in the first inning made the score 4-0 Cubs. Three batters later, Brian Bogusevic smacked a two-run triple to deep right center. Volquez still hadn't recorded an out; and he walked the next batter. Padres manager Bud Black stuck by Volquez after his meltdown on August 12 against the Rockies (eight runs over 4 1/3 innings), but it's unclear if he'll have the stomach to keep trotting Volquez (9-10, 6.01 ERA, 1.67 WHIP) out there.
Edinson Volquez earns win over Mets | 08/18/2013 1:23 AM
NewsEdinson Volquez beat the Mets by allowing two runs in five innings on Saturday night.
ImpactVolquez has been decent in three of his last four starts and maybe even five out of his last six, depending on how you want to define decent (does 3 ER in 5 IP count?). Of course, he hasn't been great at any point, but there's also no real reason for the Padres to pull him from the rotation. He figures to finish out the year and then depart this winter.
Edinson Volquez to stay in rotation for now | 08/13/2013 9:25 PM
NewsPadres manager Bud Black said that Edinson Volquez will remain in the team's rotation for the time being.
ImpactHis ERA (5.80) is the highest among qualified starters. It's possible someone like Robbie Erlin, Burch Smith and Anthony Bass could get a look eventually, but for now, Volquez will remain in the rotation. "Right now, we're keeping our rotation in order as we go through the week," Black said. "We'll see. We talk about our players all the time, on an everyday basis, with the coaches and with [general manager Josh Byrnes and assistant general manager A.J. Hinch]. It's an evaluation process every day."
Volquez gets blasted for 8 runs by Rockies | 08/13/2013 12:25 AM
NewsEdinson Volquez was pelted for eight runs over 4 1/3 innings in a loss to the Rockies on Monday.
ImpactVolquez allowed a season-high nine runs over 2 1/3 innings against these very same Rockies in June. This time he was beat around for nine hits -- including a D.J. LeMahieu solo homer -- and three walks. Colorado's offense presents a nightmare matchup for Volquez, a fact that has been proven on multiple occasions this season. Astute owners kept the right-hander glued to their bench this evening.
Volquez allows two runs in loss Tuesday | 08/07/2013 2:07 AM
NewsEdinson Volquez allowed two runs on six hits over six innings against the Orioles on Tuesday.
ImpactHe struck out six and walked two. Although Volquez is riding a stretch of competency since the All-Star break -- allowing 10 runs in 22 2/3 innings over his last four starts -- we wouldn't trust the right-hander with an 8-9 record and 5.44 ERA in mixed leagues.
Volquez yields two runs in a no-decision | 07/31/2013 1:47 AM
NewsEdinson Volquez yielded two runs on four hits in 6 1/3 innings of a no-decision against the Reds on Tuesday.
ImpactHe struck out three and walked five against his former team. Volquez completed six innings for just the fourth time in his last 11 starts. Mixed leaguers can't trust Volquez, who sits at 8-8 with a 5.56 ERA, in any matchup.

NewsEdinson Volquez yielded three runs in 5 1/3 innings in a win over the Brewers on Thursday.
ImpactVolquez gave up six hits (including two solo homers) and three walks while striking out five. He was pulled after allowing three out of the first four batters to reach base in the sixth inning, but Dale Thayer was able to keep things from getting out of hand. Volquez has failed to complete six innings in each of his last four starts and owns an ugly 5.70 ERA on the year. Fantasy owners can steer clear of him next week against the Reds.

ImpactVolquez came into Friday's outing with a 6.73 ERA on the road this season, but he pitched well, scattering seven hits while walking one batter and striking out eight. This was just the second time in his last six starts that he had completed six innings. We'd stay far away from him in fantasy leagues with a start against the Red Sox on the road next week.
Volquez loses sixth in strange fashion vs. LA | 06/22/2013 10:38 PM
NewsEdinson Volquez allowed five runs -- two earned -- in 5 2/3 innings in taking the loss to the Dodgers on Saturday.
ImpactVolquez's line was one of the more unique you'll see, as he walked seven batters, struck out seven and allowed just two hits. He now has an unsightly 5.67 ERA and 1.60 WHIP through 16 starts. His next outing offers only slightly more refuge, as he gets the upstart Marlins in Miami on Friday.
Volquez (ND) allows four runs on six hits | 06/18/2013 4:02 AM
NewsEdinson Volquez allowed four runs on six hits and a walk over five innings in his start Monday against the Giants.
ImpactVolquez (5-5, 5.84 ERA) struck out six in the no-decision. The right-hander occasionally shows his talent in mixed-league worthy performances, such as his last start against the Braves (one run over seven innings). Far too often, however, he turns in frustrating performances such as Monday's or gets outright shelled. He's a fringy NL-only pitcher.
Edinson Volquez strikes out nine Braves | 06/12/2013 6:51 PM
NewsEdinson Volquez bounced back from last week's shelling by the Rockies to limit the Braves to one run in seven innings in a victory Wednesday.
ImpactVolquez fanned nine batters, his high total since he struck out 10 against the Pirates last August. His next start will come against the Giants, a team he's handled pretty well the last two years (3.18 ERA in three starts). Still, he's a fringe NL-only pitcher at the moment.
Volquez gives up nine runs against Rockies | 06/08/2013 12:53 AM
NewsEdinson Volquez was tagged for a season-high nine runs over 2 1/3 innings in a no-decision against the Rockies.
ImpactIt was also his shortest outing of the season. Volquez gave up three in the first inning, five in the second and one in the third before being pulled. His ERA jumped from 5.35 to 6.33 in the loss, which means that only Mike Pelfrey (6.40 ERA) has a higher ERA among qualified starters. It was a nightmare matchup for Volquez, so if for some reason you started him in your fantasy league, we have little room for sympathy. He'll face the Braves next week at home.

San Diego Union-Tribune
ImpactIt resulted in a much better outing for the righty, as he held the Mariners to one run on four hits over 7 2/3 innings. Volquez had struggled over his handful of previous outings, but perhaps the blister was a big reason for that. He'll face the Blue Jays next.
Edinson Volquez earns win over Mariners | 05/29/2013 1:16 AM
NewsEdinson Volquez pitched 7 2/3 innings of one-run ball to beat the Mariners on Tuesday.
ImpactMaybe Volquez just needed to throw to Yasmani Grandal, who was making his season debut tonight. Or maybe he just needed to face the Mariners offense. He allowed four hits, walked three and struck out five tonight in his longest outing of the season. We don't recommend playing him with the Blue Jays next on the schedule.

NewsEdinson Volquez allowed five runs over five innings in the Padres' loss to the Nationals on Thursday.
ImpactVolquez walked four and struck out seven. After struggling mightily through his first three starts of the season, Volquez posted a 2.59 ERA over his last five entering Thursday. Perhaps he was due for a stinker. He's no better than a matchup play in standard formats. Next week's outing against the Cardinals doesn't look attractive in that regard.

NewsEdinson Volquez turned in another strong outing in Friday's no-decision against the Rays, allowing two runs on three hits over six frames.

He remains a decent matchup play when skimming his home starts and looks like an attractive option against the Nationals at home on Thursday.

NewsEdinson Volquez allowed one run on four hits in 6 2/3 innings in Sunday's win over the Diamondbacks.
ImpactVolquez got 11 ground-ball outs, but finished with just three strikeouts. It's his second straight win and third of the season. His lone mistake was a solo shot to Didi Gregorius in the third inning. Volquez will get Rays on Saturday in his next start.
Volquez good enough to earn 2nd win vs. Cubs | 05/01/2013 12:24 AM
NewsEdinson Volquez allowed four runs in 5 2/3 innings in the Padres' win over the Cubs on Tuesday.
ImpactDespite the win, Volquez was underwhelming in giving up seven hits and three walks to Cubs batters. Such is life as Edinson Volquez. The right-hander had turned in two strong starts previously, making him a frustrating and confusing player to own. He's an enter-at-your-own-risk proposition outside of NL-only leagues. He'll get the Diamondbacks on Sunday.

NewsEdinson Volquez blanked the Brewers for seven innings Wednesday to win for the first time this season.

He had three previous starts with no walks, but they were of three, five and six innings and he took losses in all of them. Volquez has now turned in consecutive quality starts after opening the season 0-3 with an 11.68 ERA.

Still, he only struck out three batters and allowed eight hits and three walks. He also uncorked two wild pitches. He'll face the Brewers in Milwaukee next Wednesday, but fantasy owners should only consider using him in certain matchups at home.
Volquez tagged for four runs in loss | 04/07/2013 7:12 PM
NewsEdinson Volquez allowed four runs on nine hits over six innings in Sunday's loss to the Rockies
ImpactVolquez struggled throughout the game, but the Padres desperately needed him to eat some innings after they taxed their bullpen Saturday. While Volquez holds fantasy value for his strikeout ability, he can't be trusted outside of PETCO in standard mixed leagues. He'll make his next start against the Rockies again this weekend.

NewsEdinson Volquez was tagged six runs over three-plus innings in the Padres' Opening Day loss to the Mets.
ImpactVolquez was pulled after allowing the first two baserunners to reach in the fourth. He gave up six hits and three walks before exiting. Volquez wild in final Cactus League start | 03/27/2013 7:16 PM
NewsEdinson Volquez walked six batters but allowed just one run in the Padres loss to the Reds on Wednesday.
ImpactIt was a distinctly Volquez-ian start from the right-hander, who managed to allow only one run in his five innings despite the walks. Volquez will be the Opening Day starter for the Padres, a move that speaks to the state of the Friars rotation. He holds some fantasy value for his strikeout ability, but he's a WHIP sinkhole. Use with caution.
Volquez named Padres' Opening Day starter | 03/25/2013 12:47 PM
NewsEdinson Volquez will start for the Padres on Opening Day -- April 1 -- against the Mets.
Corey Brock on Twitter
ImpactThe Padres disclosed that news on Monday in camp. Volquez posted an underwhelming 4.14 ERA and 1.45 WHIP in 182 2/3 innings last season, but he's probably the best option San Diego has. Clayton Richard will go after him.
Volquez rocked in second Cactus League start | 03/02/2013 8:16 PM
NewsEdinson Volquez allowed six runs in two innings of work Saturday, but the Padres rebounded to score an 11-8 win over the Indians.
ImpactDespite the win, it certainly wasn't the start Volquez was hoping for after throwing two scoreless innings in his first start of the spring. Strangely enough, it was hits and not walks that did Volquez in Saturday, as he allowed six hits -- five with two outs -- and all six runs in the first inning. Rough outing aside, the 29-year-old is still locked in as a member of the Padres Opening Day rotation.
