M's have had continued dialogue with Morales | 03/13/2014 4:02 PM
NewsMariners general manager Jack Zduriencik told Jon Heyman of CBS Sports that the club has had continued dialogue with free agent Kendrys Morales.
ImpactNew Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano has advocated for the club to bring back Morales, but Zduriencik said there's still a difference of opinion regarding the asking price. "It strictly has to do with where they're at (in negotiations) and where we're at," said Zduriencik. While re-signing Morales could help balance out the lineup, it would also create a bigger logjam with Justin Smoak, Corey Hart, and Logan Morrison. The market for Morales has been very quiet since the Orioles signed Nelson Cruz, so it's looking more and more like he could start the season without a home.
M's haven't closed door on Kendrys Morales | 02/21/2014 6:08 PM
NewsMariners general manager Jack Zdruiencik said Friday that the team hasn't shut the door on the possibility of free agent Kendrys Morales returning.
Jason Churchill on Twitter
ImpactOf course, it just sounds like lip service at this point, as the team already has a glut of first base and designated hitter types in Justin Smoak, Corey Hart and Logan Morrison, and would need to trade one to make that an actual possibility. The Orioles have emerged in recent days as the favorite to sign Morales.
Orioles expected to sign Morales or Cruz soon | 02/21/2014 5:21 PM
NewsFOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Orioles are in talks with both Kendrys Morales and Nelson Cruz and a "deal with one or (the) other could happen soon."
Ken Rosenthal on Twitter
ImpactIt comes on the heels of Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun's report earlier Friday that said the O's have "intensified their interest" in Morales. Cruz might be a fall-back option, as most have pegged Morales as Baltimore's primary hitting target for a while now. The O's would "only" have to sacrifice their second-round pick for signing either player after losing their first-rounder for the Ubaldo Jimenez signing.
O's have 'intensified' interest in Morales | 02/21/2014 2:20 PM
NewsDan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun reports that the Orioles have "intensified their interest" in Kendrys Morales.
ImpactThe O's have been connected to Morales all offseason, but their interest has increased recently because they'll only have to surrender a second-round pick now and also because the 30-year-old's asking price appears to have dropped. Connolly says Morales was originally seeking a four- to five-year deal but "it appears that a two-year deal with an opt out after the first season could be in play." The Orioles are also reportedly considering signing Ervin Santana even after inking Ubaldo Jimenez to a deal.
Orioles could still sign Morales or Cruz | 02/18/2014 1:29 PM
NewsJim Bowden of ESPN.com and MLB Network Radio on Sirius XM hears that the Orioles are still active and could sign either Kendrys Morales or Nelson Cruz.
Jim Bowden on Twitter
ImpactIt makes sense at this point, as the Orioles will already surrender their first-round pick if they finalize an agreement with free agent right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez. It will only cost them their second-round pick if they sign Morales or Cruz. The Orioles have questions between left field and the DH spot, so either could be a good fit if the price is right.
Pirates want Kendrys Morales at their price | 02/14/2014 9:42 AM
NewsJohn Perrotto of the Beaver County Times writes that the Pirates "want (Kendrys) Morales at their price and will stay patient until his asking price is lowered."
Beaver County Times
ImpactPerrotto says the team is "more willing to consider" forfeiting a draft pick to sign a free agent like Morales because they don't pick until No. 25. The Pirates are already paying Gaby Sanchez $2.3 million and Perrotto says the club doesn't want to spend "something in the range of $10 million on first basemen." Given that Morales turned down a $14.1 million qualifying offer, it appears significant ground will need to be made up. The good news for the Bucs is that the market for Morales looks to be almost non-existent at this point.
'Mutual interest' between Pirates, Morales | 02/09/2014 1:39 PM
NewsNick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that there is "mutual interest" between the Pirates and Kendrys Morales.
ImpactCafardo writes that the Pirates "would love" Morales at the right price, but "they may also pursue a first baseman via trade." They've long been mentioned as a potential landing spot for Ike Davis, and Cafardo also lists Adam Lind, Mitch Moreland, Justin Smoak, Daniel Nava and Mike Carp as possible targets. Signing Morales would require the Pirates to forfeit their first-round draft pick. They'd also probably no longer be able to afford Morales if they wind up re-signing A.J. Burnett.
Orioles interest in Kendrys Morales waning | 01/04/2014 8:20 AM
NewsAccording to Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports, the Orioles interest in free agent Kendrys Morales appears to be waning.
ImpactWhile the O's do have some interest, the first round pick that they'd have to surrender to sign him appears to be the deal breaker. The Orioles have several in-house options that could fill or platoon as the designated hitter, such as Nolan Reimold, Henry Urrutia and Steve Pearce, so locking up Morales to the four-year deal that he's seeking doesn't seem prudent.
Royals could be in mix for Kendrys Morales | 01/03/2014 6:30 PM
NewsAccording to Jim Duquette of MLB Network Radio, the Royals could be in the mix for free agent Kendrys Morales.
Jim Duquette on Twitter
ImpactDuquette also mentions that signing Morales could give them the flexibility needed to deal Billy Butler for pitching help. The market has been very slow to develop for the 30-year-old slugger, impacted by the fact that he's tied to draft pick compensation, and that he's a butcher in the field and best served as a designated hitter.
Boras trying to push Morales and Drew on Mets | 12/22/2013 6:29 PM
NewsJerry Crasnick of ESPN reports that Scott Boras has attempted to engage the Mets ownership in talks for free agents Kendrys Morales and Stephen Drew.
Jerry Crasnick on Twitter
ImpactIt's not unusual to see Boras attempt to drum up interest for his clients, but the Mets seem like a particularly bad fit for Kendrys Morales, who is better served being a designated hitter in the American League.
Orioles indicating interest in Kendry Morales | 12/19/2013 12:52 PM
NewsJon Morosi of FOX Sports is reporting that the Orioles have interest in free agent Kendry Morales, but the draft pick compensation attached to him remains a hindrance.
Jon Morosi on Twitter
ImpactThe Orioles finished with the 15th-best record in baseball, so their pick isn't protected. While no one doubts Morales' ability to hit, teams are very aware of just how much it would cost to obtain his services, even for one year. The Mets, who already have a glut of first basemen, have also shown interest as their first round draft pick is protected.
Kendrys Morales being pursued by DL teams | 12/17/2013 8:40 PM
NewsKendrys Morales' agent, Scott Boras, said both National League and American League teams are pursuing his client.
Jon Morosi on Twitter
ImpactMorales really should be a designated hitter, but an NL club might try to hide his bat at first base if his price drops far enough. ESPN's Buster Olney reported last week that it's possible the Mets could go after Morales if the 30-year-old remains a free agent into February or March. The team that signs Morales will have to forfeit a draft pick, which really hurts his market.
Mets could wind up pursuing Kendrys Morales | 12/13/2013 8:51 AM
NewsESPN's Buster Olney reports that a "good team-friendly deal" could develop between the Mets and Kendrys Morales in February or March.
Buster Olney on Twitter
ImpactThe Mets are trying to trade Ike Davis in order to free up first base for Lucas Duda, but if Morales winds up being available cheaply, they could move Duda back to the outfield or try to deal him, as well. Morales is more appealing to a team like the Mets because their top-10 draft pick is protected. Of course, it's debatable how much of an upgrade he'd really be over Duda.
GM: Morales won't sign until post-draft | 12/11/2013 7:04 PM
NewsA big league general manager told Peter Gammons that he "just cannot see Kendry Morales signing until after the draft."
Peter Gammons on Twitter
ImpactMorales rejected a one-year, $14.1 million qualifying offer from the Mariners last month, so signing him costs a top draft pick. The Scott Boras client has thus far struggled to find the kind of lucrative long-term package he desires. Seattle, which on Wednesday acquired both Corey Hart and Logan Morrison, will almost assuredly not re-sign Morales. The 30-year-old DH slashed .277/.336/.449 with 23 homers and 80 RBI over 156 games this past season.
Kendrys Morales 'not on Yankees radar at all' | 11/15/2013 12:33 PM
NewsMark Feinsand of the New York Daily News hears that Kendrys Morales is "not on the Yankees radar at all."
Mark Feinsand on Twitter
ImpactCBS Sports' Jon Heyman reported Thursday that the Yanks were talking about" Morales, but Feinsand thinks the club has "way too many spots to fill" to spend money on a first baseman/DH type. Morales rejected the Mariners' qualifying offer, which could really hamper his appeal on the open market.
Yankees 'talking about' FA Kendrys Morales | 11/14/2013 12:48 PM
NewsAccording to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman, the Yankees are "talking about" free agent Kendrys Morales.
ImpactMorales was presented a one-year, $14.1 million qualifying offer from the Mariners earlier this month and rejected it, so signing him costs a top draft pick. But he did hit 23 homers in 156 games this year while playing in a spacious home park, and the Yankees want to add power bats. Heyman notes that New York is also looking into free agents Shin-Soo Choo, Jacoby Ellsbury, Brian McCann, Carlos Beltran and Stephen Drew.
Kendrys Morales turns down qualifying offer | 11/11/2013 3:02 PM
NewsKendrys Morales rejected the Mariners' qualifying offer.
ImpactThe deal would have paid him $14.1 million on a one-year pact. Morales is hoping to attract multi-year offers this winter on the open market, but his free agency is now tied to draft pick compensation because he declined the qualifying offer and the Scott Boras client might struggle to find the kind of lucrative package that he desires.
Mariners make qualifying offer to DH Morales | 11/04/2013 4:13 PM
NewsThe Mariners have made a qualifying offer to Kendrys Morales.
Seattle Mariners on Twitter
ImpactMariners GM Jack Zduriencik announced over a month ago that this transaction was coming. Now the question becomes: Will Morales accept the one-year, $14.1 million contract offer? If Morales declines and signs with another organization this winter, the Mariners will receive a compensatory draft pick. This move greatly hinders Morales' market value, and we expect him to return to Seattle. The 30-year-old DH slashed .277/.336/.449 with 23 homers and 80 RBI over 156 games this past season.
Morales to reject Mariners' qualifying offer | 10/08/2013 5:26 PM
NewsCBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that Kendrys Morales will reject the Mariners' qualifying offer.
ImpactThat offer -- a one-year contract that should be worth around $14 million -- will be officially made after the conclusion of the postseason. Morales wants a multi-year contract and will seek it out on the open market, but his free agent value is going to take a major hit once he officially rejects the qualifying sum because the 30-year-old DH will then be tied to draft pick compensation.
Jack Z says Morales will get qualifying offer | 10/01/2013 4:50 PM
NewsMariners GM Jack Zduriencik said Tuesday that Kendrys Morales will "definitely" receive a qualifying offer.
Greg Johns on Twitter
ImpactIt's going to be a one-year contract offer worth around $14 million. If Morales declines and then signs with another team, the Mariners will get a top draft pick as compensation. If he accepts, it's a low-risk one-year deal for a productive designated hitter.
Morales goes 3-for-4 with double, RBI, run | 09/25/2013 1:10 AM
NewsKendrys Morales finished 3-for-4 with a double, RBI and run in a win on Tuesday against the Royals.
ImpactThe 30-year-old slugger, an impending free agent, collected his first three-hit game since September 7 against the Rays. Morales has acquitted himself well in his first (and perhaps only) season in Seattle. He boasts a .279/.337/.449 slash line with 22 homers and 79 RBI.
Morales slugs 22nd homer in win over Cards | 09/14/2013 10:14 PM
NewsKendrys Morales slugged his 22nd home run of the season in Saturday's defeat of the Cardinals.
ImpactThe eighth-inning solo shot off lefty Tyler Lyons gave the Mariners a late cushion. Morales has been quietly productive this season, boating an .802 OPS and 77 RBI.
1B Morales goes 2-for-3 with walk, homer | 09/12/2013 1:28 AM
NewsKendrys Morales finished 2-for-3 with a walk and a homer in a loss against the Astros on Wednesday.
ImpactMorales had gone 0-for-8 over his last two contests after enjoying a few big games last week. The 30-year-old slugger is due to hit free agency this winter and it'll be interesting to see if Seattle decides to pony up a three- or four-year offer to keep him. Morales is slashing .280/.340/.454 with 21 homers and 76 RBI.
Kendrys Morales belts 20th homer in loss | 09/08/2013 8:51 PM
NewsKendrys Morales belted his 20th homer of the season in Sunday's loss to the Rays.
ImpactMorales finished the day 1-for-2 with a pair of walks. His solo blast off Matt Moore opened the scoring in the second inning. The 30-year-old slugger has produced as expected during his first season in Seattle, hitting .282/.341/.454 with 20 homers and 75 RBI.
Morales' two-run homer gives M's 6-4 victory | 09/05/2013 12:04 AM
NewsKendrys Morales hit a two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to give the Mariners a 6-4 win over the Royals on Wednesday.
ImpactMorales finished 2-for-4 in the game, also doubling off starter Ervin Santana before launching his 18th home run of the year in the ninth inning. He'd gone over a month without a homer before the blast, hitting just .261 since the end of July. The homer gave the first baseman 71 RBI on the season.

NewsKendrys Morales is not in the Mariners' lineup Thursday.

NewsKendrys Morales was not traded through waivers.
Jon Heyman on Twitter
ImpactMorales got claimed by an unknown team earlier this week but a deal could not be worked out in the two-day trading period. The 30-year-old is batting .281/.338/.444 with 17 home runs and 68 RBI in 127 games this season for the Mariners. He'll be a free agent this winter.
Kendrys Morales claimed by unknown team | 08/26/2013 2:58 PM
NewsFOX Sports' Jon Morosi reports that Kendrys Morales has been claimed on waivers by an unknown team.
Jon Morosi on Twitter
ImpactIf a trade is going to happen, it will have to be this week. Morales has posted a promising .284/.340/.449 batting line with 17 home runs and 67 RBI in 124 games this season for Seattle. The Mariners could have moved him at the July 31 non-waiver deadline and decided against it but perhaps they feel differently about the situation now. Morales, 30, can become a free agent this winter.
Morales has four hits, homer in loss to O's | 08/02/2013 10:13 PM
NewsKendrys Morales finished 4-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored Friday against the Orioles.
ImpactMorales had an RBI single in the top of the third inning and solo homer in the eighth. With 13 hits in his last 17 at-bats, he has raised his batting average from .278 to .298 in the space of just four games. The 30-year-old is due to a be a free agent this winter, so it's a wonder why the Mariners weren't more aggressive about moving him before this week's trade deadline.
Kendrys Morales goes 4-for-5 against Red Sox | 08/01/2013 11:01 PM
NewsKendrys Morales went 4-for-5 on Thursday to raise his average to .291.
ImpactMorales went 9-for-13 in the series against the Boston, but oddly enough, all nine hits were singles. This from a guy who has 16 homers and 25 doubles on the season.
Kendrys Morales homers twice in loss | 07/10/2013 2:08 AM
NewsKendrys Morales homered twice and singled versus the Red Sox in Thursday's loss.
ImpactMorales has four homers in 29 at-bats this month after hitting just one in 98 at-bats in June. If he can stay hot and boost his trade value, the Mariners should consider dealing him later this month. It's not going to be worth giving him a three- or four-year deal to stick around as a free agent.
Morales hits walkoff three-run homer | 06/23/2013 8:37 PM
NewsKendrys Morales hit a walkoff three-run homer in the 10th inning of Sunday's win over the Athletics.
ImpactMorales wasn't in the lineup due to lower back stiffness, but was able to make a pinch-hit appearance in extra innings. He came through with a clutch three-run shot off Grant Balfour to lead the Mariners to victory. Morales is now batting .275/.334/.436 in 73 games this season.
Morales (back) returns to action Friday | 06/15/2013 9:23 AM
NewsKendrys Morales (back) went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in his return to the lineup Friday.
ImpactMorales missed the last two games with lower back stiffness. He served as the DH on Friday, but should continue to see time at first base with Michael Morse until Justin Smoak returns from the disabled list.

NewsKendrys Morales (back) is out of the Mariners' lineup again Wednesday.

NewsKendrys Morales was scratched from Tuesday's lineup with lower back stiffness.
Larry Stone on Twitter
ImpactMorales was removed from a game over the weekend with the same injury. He should be considered day-to-day, but the Mariners might choose to give him a few days off in order to put the injury behind him. Alex Liddi is starting at first base Tuesday in Morales' place.
Kendrys Morales (back) goes 0-for-4 in return | 06/10/2013 8:29 AM
NewsKendrys Morales (back) finished 0-for-4 with a strikeout in his return to action on Sunday.

Morales blasts eighth homer against Twins | 05/31/2013 11:24 PM
NewsKendrys Morales went 1-for-4 with his eighth homer of the season as the Mariners topped the Twins on Friday.
ImpactMorales has been an RBI machine of late, as his two Friday gives him 12 in his last eight games and 33 overall. The first baseman has a .297/.366/.495 line on the year while providing most of the offense for the Mariners.
Morales gets racks up hits in loss to Angels | 05/22/2013 10:04 PM
NewsKendrys Morales went 3-for-4 with a double in the Mariners' loss to the Angels on Wednesday.
ImpactThe first baseman was the only one effective against Angels' starter C.J. Wilson on Wednesday, and his line is up to .281/.362/.449 on the year. After getting his legs back under him last year in Anaheim, Morales has been relied upon in the middle of the Mariners order. He has five home runs and 21 RBI through 45 games.

ImpactThe DH isn't available under National League rules, so Morales will take a seat. There's a chance he could play first base for the final game of the brief interleague series on Wednesday.
Kendrys Morales drives in three in victory | 05/02/2013 1:19 AM
NewsKendrys Morales went 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI against the Orioles on Wednesday.
ImpactThe slumping Morales had driven in just four runs in three weeks, so he needed a game like this. He's a lifetime .379 hitter with four homers and 25 RBI in 26 games against the Orioles.
Morales hits 3rd home run, but Mariners fall | 04/24/2013 12:02 AM
NewsKendrys Morales went 2-for-3 with a home run in the Mariners' loss to the Astros on Tuesday.
ImpactUnfortunately there was no one on at the time, making it a solo shot for Morales. The switch-hitting designated hitter has been batting in the middle of the Mariners' order this season, but the payoff hasn't really been there in the light-hitting lineup. Morales should get his share of RBI opportunities, but his upside is ultimately limited given his surroundings.
Kendrys Morales drives in a pair | 04/09/2013 12:58 AM
NewsKendrys Morales went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a walk in Monday's win over the Astros.
ImpactMorales got things going with an RBI single in the first and then added an RBI double in the third. The Mariners' DH had a big weekend series against the White Sox, and he continued to have a hot bat Monday. He's now hitting .321 with a homer and six RBI.

Kendrys Morales gets $5.25M from Mariners | 01/18/2013 2:57 PM
NewsMariners avoided arbitration with 1B/DH Kendrys Morales by agreeing to a one-year, $5.25 million contract.
ImpactIt was Morales' final year of arbitration eligibility before he hits free agency next winter. The 29-year-old batted .273/.320/.467 with 22 homers in 2012 after missing most of the previous two seasons due to a serious leg injury.
