Suzuki doubles in a run in Thursday's loss | 07/03/2014 10:53 PM
NewsKurt Suzuki went 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored in Thursday's loss to the Yankees.
ImpactSuzuki slumped badly towards the end of June, but has started to pick things up again lately. The catcher has quietly been among the more productive catchers in the league, slashing .303/.361/.394 with two home runs and 34 RBI on the season.
Suzuki reaches four times in win over Royals | 07/01/2014 11:45 PM
NewsKurt Suzuki reached base four times in the win over the Royals on Tuesday, finishing 2-for-3 with two walks, an RBI and a run scored.
ImpactSuzuki scored one of the Twins' 10 runs on the evening in the fourth inning and drew a bases-loaded walk to drive in a run in the sixth. Suzuki is hitting a surprisingly useful .304/.362/.392 as the team's primary catcher this season.
Suzuki collects three hits | 06/20/2014 11:42 PM
NewsKurt Suzuki had three hits against the White Sox.
ImpactSuzuki went 3-for-4, singling twice and tossing in a double for good measure. He knocked in his 32nd run on an infield single in the third. The free agent acquisition has put up a nice season for the Twins, batting .315/.376/.414.
Suzuki has inside-the-parker in Twins' win | 05/21/2014 1:22 AM
NewsKurt Suzuki hit an inside-the-park home run Tuesday as the Twins beat the Padres 5-3.
ImpactSuzuki's eighth inning home run actually cleared the left field wall, replays showed. The ball bounced back into play and left fielder Seth Smith treated it as such, ignoring the sphere as Suzuki motored around the bases. Nobody appealed, so it went down in the books as an inside-the-parker, Minnesota's first since Joe Mauer in 2007. Suzuki has been a pleasant fantasy surprise, slashing .310/.374/.434 with two homers and 27 RBI.
Kurt Suzuki goes 3-for-5 in Twins' win | 05/15/2014 5:05 PM
NewsKurt Suzuki went 3-for-5 with a double and scored the winning run Thursday as the Twins beat the Red Sox 4-3 in extra innings.
ImpactIt was practically a carbon copy of Tuesday's game for Suzuki, who had three hits and scored the walkoff winner both times. This time, it was Aaron Hicks who plated him, singling in front of Grady Sizemore in the 10th. Suzuki has his average back up to .325 following his fifth three-hit game of the season.
Suzuki has three hits, RBI against Red Sox | 05/14/2014 12:51 AM
NewsKurt Suzuki went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored against the Red Sox on Tuesday.
ImpactSuzuki delivered an RBI single in the fifth inning, and he scored the winning run on Chris Parmelee's walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth. Suzuki now has 25 RBI to go with a .314/.390/.410 line. He's hit safely in seven of his last nine games.
Kurt Suzuki's two-run single topples Tigers | 05/09/2014 11:00 PM
NewsKurt Suzuki's two-run single in the seventh inning on Friday provided all of the offense the Twins would need to edge out the Tigers 2-1.
ImpactThe veteran backstop has had a resurgence hitting near the top of manager Ron Gardenhire's lineup on Minnesota, hitting .302/.381/.406 with 24 RBI on the young season. He certainly won't continue at this pace, but as long as he's seeing regular playing time, he's a strong option in two-catcher mixed leagues.
Suzuki drives in three as Twins beat O's 5-2 | 05/04/2014 5:39 PM
NewsKurt Suzuki went 3-for-3 with three RBI as the Twins beat the Orioles 5-2 on Sunday.
ImpactSuzuki drew a bases-loaded walk in the fifth inning before delivering a two-run double in the seventh inning to ice the victory. The part-time catcher has been a surprising offensive force when he's played this season, batting .325 with 22 RBI in 77 at-bats. Josmil Pinto is still the starting catcher for the Twins, but Suzuki could continue to garner more playing time with his hot bat.
Suzuki not in lineup for DH nightcap | 05/01/2014 4:45 PM
NewsKurt Suzuki is not in the lineup for the second game of Thursday's doubleheader against the Dodgers.
Frank Hanz on Twitter
ImpactHe'll take a seat after catching the first game. Josmil Pinto will start behind the plate while Joe Mauer serves as the DH. Meanwhile, Chris Colabello will play first base. Jason Kubel will also sit in the nightcap.
Kurt Suzuki homers, knocks in three | 04/19/2014 5:52 PM
NewsKurt Suzuki had a solo homer and a two-run single Saturday against the Royals.
ImpactWe all laughed when the Twins threatened to hit Suzuki second this year, but he has a .375 OBP so far. In fact, everyone the Twins had batting second through seventh today ended today with at least a .370 OBP. Suzuki, for what it's worth, has hit second just once and has batted seventh in 11 of his 13 starts. We wouldn't expect him to keep this up, but he's off to a nice start.
Suzuki has three RBI in loss to White Sox | 03/31/2014 7:36 PM
NewsKurt Suzuki went 2-for-3 with three RBI in Monday's loss to the White Sox.
ImpactMany scratched their heads when they saw Suzuki in the No. 2 spot for Opening Day -- and rightfully so -- but he did all the damage for the Minnesota offense. That's baseball for you. The 30-year-old might get the majority of the starts behind the plate in the early going, but Josmil Pinto is the future.
Kurt Suzuki batting second in Twins' opener | 03/31/2014 12:04 PM
NewsKurt Suzuki is batting second for the Twins in Monday's season-opener against the White Sox.
Dustin Morse on Twitter
ImpactSuzuki had a .290 on-base percentage last season, so the lineup placement is a little odd. The full Minnesota batting order against White Sox ace Chris Sale: 2B Brian Dozier, C Kurt Suzuki, 1B Joe Mauer, LF Josh Willingham, DH Chris Colabello, 3B Trevor Plouffe, RF Oswaldo Arcia, CF Aaron Hicks, SS Pedro Florimon. Ricky Nolasco is on the mound.
Kurt Suzuki goes hitless as No. 2 hitter | 03/25/2014 4:03 PM
NewsKurt Suzuki hit second once again Tuesday and went 0-for-3 against the Orioles.
ImpactManager Ron Gardenhire's Suzuki infatuation has turned scary, with Suzuki batting second every time he's played lately. It's not like Suzuki hit well last year or the year before or at any point this spring. But there's now a real threat that Suzuki will start the season in that spot, if only until someone knocks some sense into Gardenhire.
Suzuki leaves game after being hit in foot | 03/05/2014 8:45 PM
NewsKurt Suzuki left Wednesday night's game against the Orioles after being hit by a pitch in the right foot.
Mike Berardino on Twitter
ImpactSuzuki stayed in the game briefly but exited after the half inning. He was replaced by Josmil Pinto. It's probably not too serious -- players enter and exit spring games so freely it's not even clear that Suzuki would have stayed in the game regardless -- and more should be known about his availability after the game.
Suzuki expected to start at catcher for Twins | 01/24/2014 2:03 PM
NewsTwins general manager Terry Ryan in effect named Kurt Suzuki his starting catcher on Friday.
Mike Berardino on Twitter
Impact"Not sure who's going to back him up," Ryan said of Suzuki. The GM indicated last month that he expected Suzuki to see the bulk of the starts behind the dish, and he's now provided more clarity. It's bad news for fantasy owners that wanted to see what Josmil Pinto could do with a full season of at-bats, as Pinto will now either be Suzuki's understudy or perhaps see more seasoning at Triple-A. Suzuki's appeal in fantasy leagues in minimal.
Suzuki to see bulk of playing time at C? | 12/27/2013 9:25 AM
NewsTwins general manager Terry Ryan has indicated that Kurt Suzuki is the favorite to see most of the club's playing time at catcher.
Impact"He's going to be the type of guy who will make up a good combination with the other catchers we've got," Ryan said. "I would say he could get the bulk of the innings, but that will be decided as we go, depending on what (Eric) Fryer and (Josmil) Pinto and (Chris) Herr-mann do. [Suzuki's] makeup, his background, you cannot find anyone who will say anything bad about him." Fantasy owners would like to see Pinto -- who has easily the highest offensive upside of the group -- get the most time, but La Velle E. Neal III of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune writes that Pinto could start the year at Triple-A if he "has a poor spring training and is deemed not ready."
Twins finalize one-year deal with Kurt Suzuki | 12/23/2013 4:03 PM
NewsTwins signed C Kurt Suzuki to a one-year, $2.75 million contract.
ImpactSusan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle first reported the signing last week while FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal passed along the contract terms. Suzuki batted just .232/.290/.337 with five homers and 32 RBI over 316 plate appearances this past season, but the veteran backstop is expected to share playing time behind the plate with the young Josmil Pinto in 2014.
Kurt Suzuki agrees to terms with Twins | 12/20/2013 10:44 AM
NewsSusan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that the Twins have agreed to terms with Kurt Suzuki on a one-year contract.
Susan Slusser on Twitter
ImpactThe deal will become official later Friday assuming Suzuki passes his physical. FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal says it's for $2.75 million, with more possible in incentives. The Twins were looking for a veteran backstop to pair with youngster Josmil Pinto and they now have one in Suzuki. The 30-year-old's offense has declined the last few years (he batted just .232/.290/.337 in 2013), but he offers a strong glove and has a reputation as a good clubhouse guy.
Report: Twins, Cubs and M's pursue Suzuki | 12/18/2013 3:59 PM
NewsThe Twins, Cubs and Mariners are interested in free agent catcher Kurt Suzuki, according to Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal.
Ken Rosenthal on Twitter
ImpactThe Twins opened up a potential roster spot for a backup catcher by shipping Ryan Doumit to the Braves on Wednesday, though they could hand the gig to Chris Herrmann instead. The Mariners could definitely use a veteran backup to Mike Zunino, but we don't see a fit with the Cubs, who already acquired George Kottaras this offseason to tutor Welington Castillo. Suzuki posted a .232/.290/.337 line in 285 at-bats between the A's and Nationals this past season.
Twins, Cubs, Rockies interested in Suzuki | 12/11/2013 8:30 PM
NewsSusan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports the Twins, Cubs and Rockies have interest in Kurt Suzuki.
Susan Slusser on Twitter
ImpactSuzuki had a .232/.290/.337 line in 285 at-bats between the A's and Nationals this past season. He's not a starter, but the 30-year-old has proven to be a serviceable backup catcher. The Rangers were previously interested in Suzuki as well.
Report: Rangers considering Kurt Suzuki | 12/03/2013 9:49 AM
NewsT.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports that the Rangers are considering free agent Kurt Suzuki.
Kurt Suzuki has optioned declined | 11/01/2013 2:15 PM
NewsAthletics declined C Kurt Suzuki's $8.5 million option for 2014.
ImpactSuzuki played well down the stretch for the A's when given a chance, but he hit only .232/.290/.337 overall this season. Still, he's well-regarded as a receiver and won't have trouble netting a nice deal from someone this winter.
Oakland expected to decline Suzuki option | 10/12/2013 9:38 AM
NewsKurt Suzuki's 2014 club option is not expected to be picked up, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
San Francisco Chronicle
ImpactAlthough the A's are big fans of Suzuki's work, they currently employ three other MLB-caliber backstops in John Jaso, Derek Norris and Stephen Vogt. Suzuki's $8.5 million option would have vested if he'd made 113 starts this year, but it became a club option when he failed to do so. The veteran catcher won't have trouble finding a big league contract this winter.
Kurt Suzuki's homer leads A's to win | 08/31/2013 1:38 AM
NewsKurt Suzuki hit a three-run homer off David Price to help the A's beat the Rays 4-3 on Friday.
ImpactHe also singled. The homer was Suzuki's first in his return to the A's and just his third in 267 at-bats for the season. He's 6-for-15 in four games since being picked up a week ago.
A's reacquire Kurt Suzuki from Nationals | 08/23/2013 11:55 AM
NewsAthletics acquired C Kurt Suzuki from the Nationals in exchange for RHP Dakota Bacus.
ImpactThe A's have turned to a familiar face in their search for catching depth with both John Jaso (concussion) and Derek Norris (toe) sidelined. Suzuki was dealt from the A's to the Nats last year just after the trade deadline but is now back with the organization that drafted him. He's likely to see most of the starts over Stephen Vogt for the time being. The Nats will pick up about half of the $675,000 left on Suzuki's contract.
Report: A's reacquire Kurt Suzuki from Nats | 08/23/2013 12:50 AM
NewsThe A's have acquired Kurt Suzuki from the Nationals for a pitching prospect, according to Amanda Comak of the Washington Times.
Amanda Comak on Twitter
ImpactWith Oakland's No. 1 (John Jaso), No. 2 (Derek Norris) and No. 4 (Luke Montz) catchers all on the shelf, the A's needed to find someone to share time with Stephen Vogt. Suzuki makes perfect sense as a stopgap, even though he's hit just .223/.284/.311 in 251 at-bats for the Nationals last year. He was with the A's up until a year ago, so he's familiar with several of their pitchers. He could start over Vogt for now.
Suzuki has three hits in loss to Mets | 06/29/2013 4:28 PM
NewsKurt Suzuki went 3-for-4 with an RBI single Saturday as the Nationals fell to the Mets.
ImpactSuzuki drove in the only run of the game for the Nationals in the fourth inning, but a bad baserunning play prevented the Nationals from having a bigger inning or at least clearing the No. 9 spot in the order. He later grounded into a double-play in the top of the ninth inning to end it. The 29-year-old backstop is hitting just .222 with two home runs and a .598 OPS through 59 games this season and figures to take on a diminished role once Wilson Ramos (hamstring) returns from the disabled list.
Suzuki goes 0-for-3, struggles continue | 06/10/2013 1:27 AM
NewsKurt Suzuki went 0-for-3 with a walk in Game One of Sunday's doubleheader sweep of the Twins.
ImpactHe sat Game Two, with Jhonatan Solano behind the dish. Suzuki began the season great, posting a .796 OPS in April. He's hit .227 with no homers and an OPS just north of .500 since May 1. Suzuki will continue to start with Wilson Ramos out, but Ramos is expected to return by the end of the month.

NewsKurt Suzuki is not in the lineup for Wednesday's matinee against the Cardinals.

ImpactHe's sitting with the day game after the night game. Jhonatan Solano will make the start behind the dish at hit eighth.
Suzuki has triple, homer as Nats beat Marlins | 04/17/2013 10:43 PM
NewsKurt Suzuki went 2-for-3 with a triple and a home run against the Marlins on Wednesday.
ImpactThe home run was his second, and he's now hitting .360 on the season. With Wilson Ramos on the disabled list, Suzuki will get everyday at-bats for the next few weeks. In that lineup, he should be owned in every NL-only league if he isn't already.
Kurt Suzuki goes 2-for-3 in loss to Braves | 04/14/2013 4:56 PM
NewsKurt Suzuki went 2-for-3 in the Nationals' loss to the Braves on Sunday afternoon.
ImpactSuzuki is going to get the bulk of playing time at catcher while Wilson Ramos recovers from a hamstring strain. Which gives him a nice boost in fantasy value.
Kurt Suzuki goes deep | 04/07/2013 4:42 PM
NewsKurt Suzuki went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer and two doubles in Sunday's loss to the Reds.
ImpactMany were calling for Wilson Ramos to be the everyday catcher after his two-homer day Saturday, but Suzuki did his best to hush that talk. He'll continue to split time pretty evenly behind the dish, but Ramos is the better fantasy option.
Suzuki to start behind plate Wednesday | 04/03/2013 2:28 PM
NewsKurt Suzuki will start behind the plate Wednesday against the Marlins.
Washington Nationals on Twitter
ImpactWilson Ramos started the season opener on Monday, but Suzuki will catch Gio Gonzalez on Wednesday. Nationals manager Davey Johnson plans to split playing time pretty evenly, but we expect that Ramos will end up being more value in fantasy leagues.
Kurt Suzuki hits first homer | 03/20/2013 5:17 PM
NewsKurt Suzuki went 2-for-4 and hit his first homer against the Marlins on Wednesday.
ImpactWilson Ramos is looking good this spring as he comes back from knee surgery, but Suzuki is expected to be the Nationals' primary catcher initially. Maybe the lighter workload will restore him a bit offensively; his OPS has gone from .734 to .669 to .686 to .605 the last four years.
