|Assets:||The big righty can pop the gun at 99 m.p.h. with a quick, compact delivery, while also featuring devastating off-speed stuff that he uses to rack up strikeouts. Also eats up innings.|
|Flaws:||Needs to work on keeping the ball lower in the strike zone, since he tends to surrender a few too many homers. Also, his fastball tends to straighten out a bit too much from time to time.|

ImpactHe could progress to the next step in his recovery on Monday, which would be to throw live batting practice. ImpactVerlander was originally scheduled to throw 45-50 pitches, but he managed push it a little. He's expected to throw to hitters for the first time later this week, but his spring debut will be delayed. Still, there's a decent chance he'll be ready for the season if he can avoid setbacks.

ImpactThat's the exact announcement from the Tigers' official Twitter feed. "We fully anticipate Justin to participate in spring training and be in a position to compete at the beginning of the 2014 season," general manager Dave Dombrowski wrote in a statement. Verlander's rehab is only expected to take six weeks, but that will still put him behind the other pitchers in Tigers camp and his streak of Opening Day starts could very well be in jeopardy. He apparently injured himself during a December workout.
Justin Verlander loses despite making history | 10/15/2013 8:00 PM
NewsJustin Verlander was brilliant but took a loss Tuesday, striking out 10 while allowing one run over eight frames against the Red Sox.
ImpactVerlander yielded just four hits on the day, but one of them was a one-out, solo home run to Mike Napoli in the seventh inning, and that turned out to be the only run Boston needed. The right-hander became the second pitcher in postseason history to record 10+ strikeouts and allow one or fewer runs in three straight playoff games. He won just one of those games.
Justin Verlander's gem sends Tigers to ALCS | 10/10/2013 11:55 PM
NewsJustin Verlander was brilliant Thursday, striking out 11 across eight shutout innings in a 3-0 victory over the Athletics in Game 5 of the ALDS.
ImpactVerlander was in control from the get-go, taking a perfect game into the sixth and a no-hitter into the seventh. He wound up allowing just two hits and one walk on the night. Verlander was at 111 pitches through eight and told manager Jim Leyland that he was tiring, so Joaquin Benoit closed things out after letting a couple runners on. The righty gave up only six hits and had a 21/2 K/BB ratio over 15 ALDS innings. The A's will take on the Red Sox in the ALCS starting on Saturday.

NewsJustin Verlander will start ALDS Game 5 against the Athletics on Thursday.
Jane Lee on Twitter
ImpactThe Tigers used Max Scherzer for two innings in relief in Game 4, so Verlander will not get the ball in Oakland. The A's have yet to announce their starter, but it will be either Bartolo Colon or Sonny Gray. He held the A's scoreless while striking out 11 over seven innings in Game 2 last weekend. Scherzer should be ready to go for Game 1 of the ALCS should the Tigers advance.

NewsJustin Verlander struck out 11 batters over seven shutout innings but took a no-decision against the A's on Saturday.
ImpactVerlander had everything working; his biggest obstacle was his opposing pitcher, as A's starter Sonny Gray matched him zero for zero. Verlander allowed just four singles and a walk, and he worked out of a couple jams thanks to his 11 strikeouts. His 11th, the third of the night for A's catcher Stephen Vogt, ended the seventh inning with two runners in scoring position. Verlander may come back to start a potential Game 5 if needed next week.
Verlander spins 6 shutout frames vs. Marlins | 09/29/2013 3:33 PM
NewsJustin Verlander worked six shutout innings, scattering three hits, in a no-decision versus the Marlins on Sunday.
ImpactVerlander was brilliant as always, striking out 10 and issuing just one free pass, but his offense couldn't muster so much as a hit off Henderson Alvarez in the 1-0 setback. Verlander finishes the season 13-12 with a 3.46 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 217/75 K/BB ratio over 34 starts and 218 1/3 innings. The right-hander wasn't nearly as effective this season as in 2011 or 2012, and fantasy owners that drafted him no doubt overpaid, but he'll enter next spring as a top-ranked fantasy starter once again.

NewsJustin Verlander fanned 12 in six scoreless innings Monday against the Twins.

Verlander ended up allowing four hits and three walks while striking out six, throwing 124 pitches over his seven innings. Despite having regressed a bit this season, Verlander is still a must-start next week at the lowly Twins.

NewsJustin Verlander picked up his 13th win of the season on Friday, allowing three runs on nine hits over 6 2/3 innings against the Royals.
ImpactVerlander punched out seven while without issuing a free pass on the evening. Salvador Perez was responsible for most of the damage against him, with an RBI single in the fourth inning and an RBI double that capped off a two-run sixth. It's been a highly disappointing season for Verlander, who sits at 13-11 with a 3.84 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 189/68 K/BB ratio over his 199 1/3 innings. He'll take on the Mariners next time out, at home on Wednesday.

NewsJustin Verlander coughed up four runs in seven innings Saturday in a loss to the Royals.
ImpactThe struggles have returned for Verlander, who seemed to turn a corner last Sunday with his seven innings of shutout ball against the Indians. He struck out seven and issued only one walk on Saturday night in Kansas City, but the Royals got to him for eight hits -- including a Salvador Perez two-run homer. Verlander will carry a 3.64 ERA and 1.34 WHIP into his next start against this same Royals team.

ImpactVerlander's rough stretch of games continues, as he still hasn't recorded a win since August 6. On Tuesday, he gave up four hits, including a two-run home run to Brandon Moss, while also walking three. The right-hander has seen his ERA rise to 3.73 while falling to 12-10 on the year. Verlander gives up six runs in no-decision | 08/22/2013 4:16 PM
NewsJustin Verlander was tagged for six runs over seven innings in a no-decision against the Twins on Thursday.
ImpactVerlander gave up 10 hits (including a three-run homer by Ryan Doumit) while walking three batters. It was his most runs allowed in a start since May 16. His ERA is now up to 3.68 for the year, which isn't exactly what fantasy owners were hoping for when they invested an early pick this spring. He'll look to rebound next week against the Athletics at home.

NewsJustin Verlander took a loss despite pitching eight innings of two-run ball Friday against the Royals.
ImpactThe Tigers were limited to just one run today, the first time that's happened in a Verlander start since April 18 when the Tigers lost 2-1 to the Mariners. Verlander threw 124 pitches in his eight innings and finished with six strikeouts and two walks. The homer he surrendered to Eric Hosmer was just the fifth he's given up to a left-handed hitter this season.

Verlander allows four runs in a no-decision | 08/11/2013 5:14 PM
NewsJustin Verlander allowed four runs on seven hits over seven innings in a no-decision on Sunday against the Yankees.
ImpactOn a positive note, he struck out nine batters, the most he's recorded since his last outing of May. Verlander has put in time this month attempting to correct a mechanical error that was pushing his left (landing) leg five to six inches away from its usual spot upon delivery. Since the maintenance, Verlander has allowed five runs over 15 innings (3.00 ERA) in two starts while posting a spectacular 16/1 K/BB rate. Expect the right-hander to improve upon his 3.57 ERA by the end of the season.

It's the second straight start in which he's allowed just one run, and it was also his first start of the year in which he hasn't issued a single walk. The right-hander is now 12-8 with a 3.74 ERA in 24 starts. He'll start again Sunday against the Yankees.
Justin Verlander picks up 11th victory | 07/31/2013 5:05 PM
NewsJustin Verlander limited the Nationals to one run and four hits in six innings to cruise to a win Wednesday.
ImpactVerlander gave up a walk, a single and a second walk to the first three hitters he faced today, so all signs pointed to another bad day. Instead, he got out of the jam, allowing just a sac fly, and he gave up just three singles the rest of the way. It still wasn't vintage Verlander -- he walked five in all -- but hopefully it was a step in the right direction.
Justin Verlander knocked around by White Sox | 07/25/2013 6:31 PM
NewsJustin Verlander was lit up for seven runs over six innings in Thursday's loss to the White Sox.
ImpactThe Pale Hose pounded Verlander for 11 hits while taking a pair of walks. The right-hander struck out only four and served up a home run. Verlander has now allowed at least five runs in three of his last four starts to push his ERA up to a season-high 3.99. He'll try to bounce back next week at home against the Nationals.
Verlander allows five runs in loss to Royals | 07/20/2013 10:41 PM
NewsJustin Verlander was hammered for five earned runs Saturday in the Tigers' loss to the Royals.
ImpactIt was his first start since his promising one-hit performance against the Rangers just before the All-Star break. Verlander has been a confusing case all year, but he remains a must-start in most standard fantasy leagues because when he's on he can still dominate. The right-hander will take on the White Sox in Chicago next.

Verlander was twirling a no-hitter before Mitch Moreland doubled with two outs in the seventh inning. We expect the All-Star break to provide all the recuperation time Verlander needs to make his next scheduled start against the Royals on Saturday.

NewsJustin Verlander blanked the Blue Jays for seven runs, allowing just three hits, in a victory on Thursday.
ImpactThe Tigers ended up winning 11-1. It's the fourth time this season that Verlander has gone without allowing a run. Teammate and Cy Young favorite Max Scherzer has yet to do that once. While his first half hasn't measured up to his previous couple, Verlander is still worthy of All-Star consideration at 9-5 with a 3.54 ERA.

NewsJustin Verlander was left with a no-decision Saturday after allowing three runs -- two earned -- over eight frames in the Tigers' extra-innings loss to the Rays.
ImpactVerlander gave up a game-tying solo home run to Luke Scott in the bottom of the eighth inning before exiting the game. The Rays then broke through and won it in the bottom of the 10th. Verlander allowed nine hits and walked four, and will carry a relatively pedestrian 8-5 record, 3.77 ERA and 1.40 WHIP into his next start in Toronto. He hasn't been himself since mid-May.
Justin Verlander struggles vs. Red Sox | 06/23/2013 5:09 PM
NewsJustin Verlander struggled but escaped with a no-decision Sunday, allowing four runs over just five frames in a 7-5 victory over the Red Sox.
ImpactVerlander yielded seven hits, walked three and hit a batter. He needed a whopping 112 pitches to cover the five innings. Though he's maintained a great K/BB ratio (110/35 over 97 frames), the righty has an un-Verlander-like 3.90 ERA and 1.38 WHIP. He'll try to bounce back next weekend in Tampa.

NewsJustin Verlander allowed five runs in five innings to take the loss against the Orioles on Tuesday.

Justin Verlander goes seven scoreless | 06/12/2013 5:41 PM
NewsJustin Verlander was denied a victory after blanking the Royals for seven innings on Wednesday.
ImpactVerlander struck out eight before leaving with a 2-0 lead. Unfortunately, Jose Valverde couldn't make it stand up. Still, Verlander can't complain too much. Thanks to ample run support, he had won his last four starts, even though he had a 4.85 ERA during the span.
Verlander strikes out six in win over Tribe | 06/07/2013 10:22 PM
NewsJustin Verlander turned in a quality start in Friday's victory over the Indians, allowing three runs on seven hits over his seven innings.
ImpactVerlander fanned six on the night while walking a pair. Outside of the three-run fifth inning, he was in complete command the rest of the evening. It's the fourth consecutive win for Verlander, who now sits at 8-4 on the season with a 3.71 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 93/26 K/BB ratio through 80 innings. He'll attempt to extend that streak to five when he does battle against the Royals in Kansas City on Tuesday.
Justin Verlander cruises to seventh win | 06/01/2013 7:38 PM
NewsJustin Verlander yielded three runs in seven innings Saturday in a victory over the Orioles.
ImpactVerlander had it easy today after the Orioles scored eight times in the fourth to make it 9-1. He did give up two homers to J.J. Hardy before leaving. He had allowed just three homers in 66 innings this season coming in.
Verlander fans 13 batters, Tigers beat Bucs | 05/27/2013 4:33 PM
NewsJustin Verlander struck out 13 batters Monday in the Tigers' afternoon victory over the Pirates.
ImpactVerlander gave up seven hits and three runs but was mostly pretty sharp in the interleague outing. He's now 6-4 with a 3.68 ERA and 82/32 K/BB ratio in 66 innings this season. And while those aren't his usual ace-like stats, they've still been plenty good in standard fantasy formats. The Orioles are up next.
Verlander allows five, gets win over Indians | 05/23/2013 12:34 AM
NewsJustin Verlander allowed five runs over five innings but earned the win Wednesday as the Tigers beat the Indians.
ImpactVerlander had to work for his fifth win, needing 110 pitches to get through five. He gave up 10 hits, including a home run, but was aided by his team putting up nine runs in the same span. It marks the third-straight start in which Verlander has been less-than-great, seeing his ERA rise from 1.55 to 3.66 since May 5. There's still little reason to worry, though, and he'll take the mound again Monday against the Pirates.
Verlander has career-worst outing in loss | 05/16/2013 11:50 PM
NewsJustin Verlander was torched for eight runs in 2 2/3 innings by the Rangers on Thursday.
ImpactIt was stunning to see Verlander melt down, even in light of his poor outing last time out against the Indians (4 R, 3 ER, 5 BB in 5 IP). He hit a batter and issued two walks with the bases loaded in the third inning tonight before Geovany Soto hit a three-run homer to knock him out of the game. The seven-run inning was the worst of his career, and he tied his career high by allowing eight runs overall. It was his shortest outing in three years. Verlander's velocity is actually better than it was last month, and it's not like he's totally lost his command. This will likely just prove to be a bump in the road.
Justin Verlander struggles in loss to Indians | 05/11/2013 10:47 PM
NewsJustin Verlander struggled in Saturday's loss to the Indians, allowing four runs and six hits in five frames.
ImpactVerlander did strike out seven, but he needed 110 pitches to get through five innings of work. Verlander still sits at 4-3 on the season with a 2.10 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 57/18 K/BB ratio over 51 1/3 innings. He will try to bounce back when he takes on the Rangers in Arlington on Thursday.

Verlander goes seven strong in win | 04/30/2013 10:15 PM
NewsJustin Verlander held the Twins to one run over seven innings Tuesday in the Tigers' 6-1 victory.
ImpactVerlander was questionable for the start after leaving his previous outing with a blister on his right thumb. But he looked plenty healthy, fanning eight Minnesota hitters and allowing only five hits. He's now 3-2 with a 1.83 ERA and 41/11 K/BB ratio in 39 1/3 innings this season and gets to face the Astros next.

NewsJustin Verlander struck out 12 but suffered his second loss Thursday, allowing two runs over seven frames against the Mariners.
ImpactHe gave up nine hits and walked just one. Verlander pretty much coasted through the first six innings, and he retired the first two batters in the seventh before the M's rallied for three straight hits to net the only runs of the game. It was another great effort even though it didn't result in a win, and Verlander now boasts a 2.13 ERA through four starts. He'll get the Royals next.

Justin Verlander wins rare short start | 04/01/2013 7:56 PM
NewsJustin Verlander pitched five scoreless innings and struck out seven to beat the Twins on Monday.
ImpactVerlander had some difficulties this spring, and he wasn't quite his usual self today, though the Twins lineup wasn't able to expose him. Even so, it was his shortest start since he gave up three runs in five innings in a loss to the Yankees on Aug. 17, 2010. Verlander threw 91 pitches, 54 of them strikes.
Tigers sign Verlander to five-year extension | 03/29/2013 12:46 PM
NewsTigers signed RHP Justin Verlander to a five-year, $140 million extension with a vesting option for 2020.
ImpactVerlander was under contract for two more years at $20 million per season, but he'll now earn an additional $140 million over the five seasons after that and will get a total of $202 million if his vesting option kicks in. It's a ton of money to commit to a pitcher, especially with how many innings Verlander has piled up in recent seasons. He's earned it, though, after winning the AL MVP and Cy Young in 2011 and finishing runner-up in the Cy Young last season.

NewsJustin Verlander held the Phillies to two runs -- one earned -- in 5 2/3 innings in a loss Wednesday.
ImpactThe outing got off to a rough start, as Jhonny Peralta whiffed on an easy grounder to begin the game. Verlander then unleashed a wild pickoff throw, giving the Tigers two errors before they got an out. Ben Revere quickly came around to score from there, but Verlander was fine the rest of the way. Those five homers he gave up in his previous two starts aren't worth worrying about.

ImpactVerlander has given up homers to Jordany Valdespin, Brandon Hicks, Brandon Laird, Carlos Corporan and Matt Dominguez in his last two starts. We can still chalk it up as a spring training fluke, but it's unprecedented; that's as many homers as he allowed in his previous 20 spring training starts dating back to 2010. He's given up more runs in 19 innings this year (10) than he did in spring 2011 and 2012 combined (nine runs in 54 2/3 innings).

ImpactThat must have been a tough choice. Verlander was the runner-up to David Price in the AL Cy Young balloting last year after posting a 2.64 ERA and 239/60 K/BB ratio over 238 1/3 innings. He and Clayton Kershaw should be the first pitchers off the board in fantasy drafts this spring.
