NewsESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports that the Mariners have talked to the Royals about a possible trade for Billy Butler.
Jerry Crasnick on Twitter
ImpactThe Mariners are looking far and wide for a bat, but they'd be buying low on Butler. While he has shown some signs of life since early June, he has hit just three home runs through 93 games this season. The Mariners have also reportedly showed interest in Phillies outfielder Marlon Byrd.

Butler has two hits, two RBI against Indians | 06/10/2014 11:16 PM
NewsBilly Butler had a two-run single and finished 2-for-4 in Tuesday's win over the Indians.
ImpactButler had two singles in his four at-bats, bringing his line up to .253/.303/.319. He's still sorely lacking in the power department, though -- Butler is stuck on one home run, which he hit on May 2, and the two runs batted in gave him 23 RBI on the year. It's not fun owning virtually any of the Royals for fantasy purposes these days.
Butler scores three times against White Sox | 05/21/2014 1:07 AM
NewsBilly Butler went 1-for-3 with three runs scored in a loss to the White Sox on Tuesday.
ImpactButler walked twice and doubled, coming around to score all three times he was on base in the game. ImpactButler is hitting .268 with eight RBI in 17 games this month after finishing April at .224 with eight RBI in 26 games. So, it's an improvement. His fantasy value will remain limited until he starts hitting some homers again, but even baby steps are appreciated at this point.
Butler 0-for-4, numbers continues to freefall | 05/16/2014 11:00 PM
NewsBilly Butler's struggles continued in Friday's loss to the Orioles with an 0-for-4 performance.
ImpactButler now has one hit in his last 16 plate appearances. The DH has not been able to get it going this season, only recently getting his OPS over .600. But Friday's performance drops it back down to .572. It goes without saying that Butler needs to pick it up sooner rather than later.

NewsBilly Butler clubbed his first home run of the 2014 season in Friday's loss to the Tigers.
ImpactHis homer, a line drive to left field off Rick Porcello in the fourth inning, was his lone hit in four at-bats on the night. He's hitting a paltry .236/.291/.302 with 11 RBI on the season and has been a big factor in the Royals early season struggles.

Billy Butler goes hitless from third spot | 04/24/2014 2:41 PM
NewsShifted in the lineup yet again, Billy Butler went 0-for-4 as the Royals' No. 3 hitter in Thursday's loss.
ImpactTo put it mildly, Ned Yost's latest attempt to juggle the lineup didn't have a quick payoff. Norichika Aoki, Eric Hosmer, Butler and Alex Gordon all went hitless from the top four spots in the lineup. Omar Infante, who had been batting second in between Aoki and Hosmer, went 1-for-3 and scored the team's lone run from the fifth spot. Butler's average tumbled back down to .196. He's still without a homer in 77 at-bats this year.

NewsBilly Butler went 2-for-4 with an RBI double and a run scored in Tuesday's win over the Indians.
ImpactButler was ice cold to start the season, but has picked it up as of late, with three multi-hit games in his last four outings. If he keeps it up, it won't be too long until his OPS gets back over .600. He's at .538 now.
Billy Butler goes 0-for-4 in loss | 04/21/2014 10:25 PM
NewsReintroduced to the cleanup spot, Billy Butler went 0-for-4 in Monday's loss to the Indians.
ImpactIt probably doesn't matter much; Salvador Perez, who was batting cleanup in Butler's place, went 0-for-4, too. Maybe the Royals really should bat Alcides Escobar fourth. OK, no, not really, but Butler has looked terrible and Perez is in quite a funk now, as well.
Billy Butler expected to move back to cleanup | 04/20/2014 5:39 PM
NewsBilly Butler is expected to move back to the cleanup spot in the Royals lineup on Monday.
Andy McCullough on Twitter
ImpactWhile Butler has struggled to the tune of .213/.286/.230 on the season, he does have three hits in seven at-bats since being demoted in the lineup, so the shakeup appears to have done some good. Salvador Perez has gone hitless in two games since the switch though and doesn't look comfortable in the fourth slot, which could be the reason for the switch back.
Billy Butler reaches twice from sixth spot | 04/17/2014 11:44 PM
NewsDropped from the cleanup spot for the first time this season, Billy Butler went 1-for-3 with a walk Thursday against the Astros.
ImpactThe move was overdue. It's not as if Butler was having a run-of-the-mill slump with his .149 average and no extra-base hits in 47 at-bats; his swing is so messed up that he hasn't been able to hit the ball in the air at all so far this season. The Royals should keep him in the lineup, for sure, but it's much better to give Salvador Perez a crack at the cleanup spot than to let Butler continue to kill rallies while's he's struggling.
Butler goes 2-for-4 against the A's | 03/12/2014 7:06 PM
NewsBilly Butler went 2-for-4 with a run scored as the Athletics lost to the Royals 3-1.
ImpactButler continues to hit, raising his Cactus League average to .375 in 32 at-bats. His power numbers declined last season but it was most likely an aberration.
Butler goes 2-for-3 against the Mariners | 03/10/2014 7:02 PM
NewsBilly Butler went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored on Monday against the Mariners.
ImpactButler has been swinging the bat well for the Royals in the Cactus League. Monday's effort boosted his spring average to .385. Last season, Butler posted a sub-.800 OPS for the first time since 2008, thanks to a noticeable loss of power, but should be able to make at least a partial recovery going forward.
Billy Butler to play more first base in 2014 | 03/04/2014 8:43 AM
NewsBilly Butler will play more first base this season.
Kansas City Star
Impact"I want to try to give him as much opportunity to play over there as I can," manager Ned Yost said Monday in Royals camp. Butler made only seven starts at first base in 2013. He made 150 starts at designated hitter. A little more time in the field should only boost his fantasy and free agent value.
Royals GM: Butler rumors merely 'rhetoric' | 12/18/2013 10:08 AM
NewsRoyals general manager Dayton Moore said on Tuesday that Billy Butler trade rumors are "just all Hot Stove rhetoric."
Kansas City Star
Impact"It's not different than you hear other players throughout the league who are potentially going to be moved," Moore said. Butler, who is owed an $8 million salary in 2014 and and $12 million in 2015, slashed .289/.374/.412 with 15 homers and 82 RBI in 162 games this past summer for Kansas City. The 27-year-old designated hitter smacked 29 homers in 2012. "We think Billy has been a terrific hitter, and Billy is a terrific hitter," Moore said. "And he's going to continue to hit. That's what Billy does."

NewsJeff Blair of the Globe and Mail reports that the Blue Jays have discussed a trade with the Royals involving Billy Butler.
Jeff Blair on Twitter
ImpactBlair says Toronto would receive "prospects plus Butler," but the talks haven't "moved beyond the discussion stage." It's not clear what Kansas City would receive in the deal. With Edwin Encarnacion and Adam Lind already on the roster as first base/DH options, the Blue Jays seems likely to trade for Butler only if they can also deal Lind.
Mariners among teams with interest in Butler | 11/14/2013 8:58 AM
NewsAccording to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, the Mariners are among the teams with interest in Billy Butler.
ImpactIt seems like the M's have been connected to every available hitter, so this may simply be a case of due diligence. ESPN's Buster Olney reported in October that the Royals are willing to trade Butler, who is owed $8 million in 2014 and $12 million in 2015. The 27-year-old designated hitter batted .289/.374/.412 with 15 home runs and 82 RBI in 162 games this past summer for Kansas City.
Royals will listen to offers for Billy Butler | 10/22/2013 2:54 PM
NewsESPN's Buster Olney reports that the Royals are ready to listen to offers for Billy Butler.
Buster Olney on Twitter
ImpactThe Royals would be selling somewhat low, as Butler only hit 15 homers this season after a career-high 29 in 2012. He's best suited as a DH, so the market could be limited, but the Royals figure to get some calls. Butler is still owed $8 million next season and $12 million in 2015.

NewsBilly Butler will not start any of the three games during this weekend's series against the Mets.
Kansas City Star

Butler has go-ahead double in win over Astros | 06/07/2013 11:29 PM
NewsBilly Butler delivered a go-ahead double in the eighth inning Friday as part of a 4-2 win over the Astros.
ImpactHe actually had two doubles on the night. Butler now has three straight multi-hit games and has driven in one run in each of them. He had just two hits over his previous six games behind. While it's been a struggle for him so far this season, we're expecting better days ahead.
Billy Butler homers, doubles for Royals | 05/15/2013 12:58 AM
NewsBilly Butler followed up Monday's 5-for-5 game by collecting a solo homer and an RBI double Tuesday against the Angels.
ImpactOf course, Butler is hot now, and he's capable of staying that way for a while. But there's also been a subtle change recently that's given him a little more fantasy value. Now that Jarrod Dyson is starting in center field, he can't well pinch-run for Butler in the late innings of games. Last year, Butler was driven in just 43 times all season, a ridiculously low total for a No. 3-No. 4 hitter. He'll never be a big asset in that category, but he will score a few more times this year if he's not run for so often.
Butler goes 5-for-5 with 5 RBI, 2 runs scored | 05/14/2013 3:12 AM
NewsBilly Butler abused the Angels on Monday, going 5-for-5 with a pair of doubles, five RBI and two runs scored in an 11-4 win.
ImpactA welcome sign for his owners, whom Butler had frustrated to the tune of a .228 average and only four homers entering Monday's game. His monster contest raised his average by 33 points, from .228 to .261, and pulled Butler out of a 2-for-23 valley.
Billy Butler tallies fourth home run in loss | 05/11/2013 9:54 PM
NewsBilly Butler swatted his fourth homer of the year but it wasn't enough to overcome the Yankees on Saturday.
ImpactThe solo shot off Andy Pettitte in the fourth inning was Butler's only hit in four at-bats. He's off to a bit of a slow start this season, now batting .236/.361/.391 with four homers and 20 RBI through 33 games. A career .298/.362/.464 hitter, he should come alive soon.
Butler delivers three hits, Royals best Rays | 05/02/2013 12:20 AM
NewsBilly Butler went 3-for-5 Wednesday in the Royals' 9-8 victory over the Rays.
ImpactButler got off to a slow start but has been heating up in recent weeks, batting .361 (13-for-36) in his past 10 games. His power stroke is still missing -- he's hit just three home runs through 25 games -- but that will come with time, too. In his prime and with a good lineup around him, Butler is still a must-start in all formats.

ImpactButler had an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning and a two-run double in the fourth. Fresh off a year in which he established new career-highs with 29 home runs and 107 RBI, the 26-year-old should be considered a top-10 fantasy first baseman.
