ImpactDon't look now, but Desmond is coming on strong. He's got six extra-base hits -- three homers -- and 10 RBI over his past six games. Owners wish he would make more contact (.238 batting average; career mark of .270) and start running more (four steals; three straight years with at least 20), but nobody will argue if he finishes with 34 homers and 100 RBI. He's on pace to do so after never finishing with more than 25 long flies or 80 RBI.

Ian Desmond hits two-run homer | 03/20/2014 4:15 PM
NewsIan Desmond hit a two-run homer off Max Scherzer in Thursday's victory.
ImpactIt looks like manager Matt Williams will follow through on the idea of batting Desmond second. Desmond doesn't project as one of the team's better OBP guys, but he's a speedy middle infielder and managers figure they can never go wrong by batting those kinds of guys second. Desmond, who has three homers and four steals this spring, could be a stellar fantasy shortstop while hitting second full-time. He'd just probably help the Nationals more while batting fifth.

NewsIan Desmond went 3-for-3 with a homer and a double against the Braves on Tuesday.
ImpactDesmond was hitting second today. He's also spent time batting in the middle of the order this spring. Fifth or sixth is probably where he belongs, given his power and unexceptional (though still solid) on-base percentages. However, because he's a middle infielder and he's pretty fast, there's a good chance Matt Williams will have him batting second to begin the year.

NewsIan Desmond went 2-for-3 with a homer Saturday as the Nationals topped the Cardinals 6-2.
ImpactTeam USA picked Jimmy Rollins as its shortstop for the WBC, but one wonders if Desmond might not have the superior choice after he hit .292/.335/.511 last season. Perhaps he'll get his chance next time around. Desmond is 5-for-9 this spring.

ImpactThe Nationals and Desmond avoided arbitration last month by agreeing to a one-year, $3.8 million contract. There haven't been any talks on an extension since, but since he remains under team control through 2015, there's no rush to get something done.
Nats, Desmond avoid arb. with $3.8M deal | 01/18/2013 4:48 PM
NewsNationals avoided arbitration with SS Ian Desmond by agreeing to a one-year, $3.8 million contract.
ImpactIt's a healthy raise for Desmond, who was in his first year of arbitration eligibility. The bump in pay is well earned, though, after the 27-year-old experienced a breakout year in 2012, batting .292/.335/.511 with 25 homers and 21 steals. He'll be the everyday shortstop again this season.
