|Assets:||Has the perfect mentality for a closer. Intimidates and challenges hitters with a moving fastball that's usually around the plate. Mixes in a sharp splitter. Thrives under pressure.|
|Flaws:||Could stand to be a little more crafty, instead of strictly relying on his power pitches. Sometimes he has trouble locating his off-speed stuff. Struggles whenever in low-pressure innings.|

Mark Saxon of ESPN Los Angeles reports that the Dodgers are expected to pursue Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon. | 07/17/2014 2:10 PM
NewsMark Saxon of ESPN Los Angeles reports that the Dodgers are expected to pursue Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon.
ImpactPapelbon has quietly had a terrific season, saving 22 games and recording a 1.21 ERA. a 0.86 WHIP and 33 Ks in 37 1/3 innings. If Los Angeles acquires Papelbon, it could move Kenley Jansen (27 saves, 3.49 ERA, 1.27 WHIP) to the eighth inning. Brian Wilson and Chris Perez have faltered as set-up men this season and Papelbon has more closing experience than Jansen. The Dodgers have also used lesser pitchers like Brandon League and Javy Guerra over Jansen in the closer role in the past even after Jansen had proven his dominance.
Dodgers expected to pursue Phillies' Papelbon | 07/16/2014 7:00 PM
NewsA source tells Mark Saxon of ESPN Los Angeles that he expects the Dodgers to pursue Jonathan Papelbon.
Mark Saxon on Twitter
ImpactThe Dodgers already have a competent closer in Kenley Jansen, but setup man Brian Wilson has been terrible and the Dodgers have the financial wherewithal to take on a portion of Papelbon's remaining salary. Papelbon recently told reporters he would welcome a deal to a contender, so getting him to waive his no-trade clause to head west shouldn't be a problem.
Pap: Waiving no-trade clause a 'no-brainer' | 07/11/2014 9:28 AM
NewsJonathan Papelbon said Wednesday that it would be a "no-brainer" to waiver his no-trade clause in order to be dealt to a contender.
Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News
ImpactPhillies general manager Ruben Amaro said that Papelbon has "never expressed to me that he's been unhappy," but he's not surprised the closer is willing to be dealt. "Why wouldn't players want to play on a contending team?" the GM added. "It's really rather simple." Papelbon is owed about $19 million through the end of next season and has a $13 million vesting option for 2016, so the Phils will surely have to eat some money in order to make a trade happen. However, Papelbon probably does look attractive to a contender with a 1.24 ERA and 22 saves in 24 opportunities.
Papelbon slams door on Brewers for 22nd save | 07/09/2014 11:08 PM
NewsJonathan Papelbon picked up the save for the third consecutive day, slamming the door on the Brewers in the ninth inning as the Phillies earned a 4-1 victory on Wednesday.
ImpactPapelbon had another 1-2-3 inning, also his third in a row. The Phillies will likely have to rely on Jake Diekman or Ken Giles in the ninth inning if they need to in Thursday afternoon's series finale. Papelbon is 22-for-24 in save chances with a 1.24 ERA, 0.85 WHIP, and a 32/9 K/BB ratio in 36 1/3 innings.
Papelbon works another 1-2-3 9th for 21st SV | 07/08/2014 11:46 PM
NewsJonathan Papelbon picked up his 21st save, pitching a perfect ninth inning as the Phillies went home winners against the Brewers on Tuesday.
ImpactPapelbon has saved both of the Phillies' wins, both with perfect ninth innings, to open the four-game set against the Brewers. The right-hander has been among baseball's best closers thus far, having saved 21 of 23 with a 1.27 ERA, a 0.88 WHIP, and a 31/9 K/BB ratio in 35 1/3 innings.
Papelbon completes comeback with 19th save | 07/03/2014 9:28 PM
NewsJonathan Papelbon converted his 19th save of the season, blanking the Marlins in the ninth inning in Thursday's victory.
ImpactIt was Papelbon's first appearance in a save situation since June 24, and his first appearance overall since Sunday. The layoff didn't affect Papelbon, as he struck out two in the effort. The right-hander has had a great season despite diminished velocity, now 19-for-21 in save chances with a 1.35 ERA, a 0.93 WHIP, and a 30/9 K/BB ratio in 33 1/3 innings.
Papelbon fries the Marlins for his 18th save | 06/24/2014 11:26 PM
NewsJonathan Papelbon held the Marlins scoreless in the ninth inning to pick up his 18th save in Tuesday's victory.
ImpactPapelbon allowed a two-out single to Giancarlo Stanton, but was able to get Casey McGehee to ground out to shortstop to end the game. The closer lowered his ERA to 1.48 and now carries a 0.99 WHIP with a 25/9 K/BB ratio. Papelbon is 18-for-20 in save opportunities.
Papelbon works perfect ninth for 17th save | 06/19/2014 11:24 PM
NewsJonathan Papelbon worked a perfect ninth inning to pick up his 17th save in Thursday's win over the Cardinals.
ImpactWith the Phillies now on a four-game winning streak and four games out of first place in a very weak NL East, Papelbon may be pitching for a club that now deems itself a contender. Papelbon has a 1.53 ERA, a 0.99 WHIP, and a 25/9 K/BB ratio in 29 1/3 innings, but his remaining salary ($13 million in each of 2014-15 plus a $13 million vesting option for 2016) would make it difficult if the Phillies were to attempt to trade him.
Papelbon locks down 16th save vs. Braves | 06/17/2014 10:40 PM
NewsJonathan Papelbon worked a scoreless ninth inning to collect his 16th save in Tuesday's win over the Braves.
ImpactPapelbon's velocity was slightly below where it had been most of the season, registering at 89-90 instead of 92-93, but he made quick work of the Braves anyway. Monday's blown save aside -- which had more to do with bloop hits finding grass than poor pitching -- Papelbon has been a rock for the Phillies, sitting on a 1.59 ERA with a 1.02 WHIP and a 25/9 K/BB ratio. He has converted 16 of his 18 save chances.
Jonathan Papelbon takes blown save | 06/17/2014 12:39 AM
NewsJonathan Papelbon took his second blown save of the year after giving up three singles and a run in the ninth Monday against the Braves.
ImpactPapelbon looked like he might be a liability for the Phillies following last year's decline and an awful spring, but he has a 1.65 ERA and he's yet to allow a homer in 27 1/3 innings this season. His first blown save since April 2 did force the Phils to play a few extra innings tonight, but they ended up winning anyway.
Papelbon converts 300th career save vs. SD | 06/10/2014 9:53 PM
NewsJonathan Papelbon finally found himself back in a save situation, working a scoreless ninth inning for his 14th save -- the 300th of his career -- in Tuesday's win over the Padres.
ImpactPapelbon, the 26th reliever to reach 300 career saves, last found himself in a save situation on May 24. Due to circumstances that can mostly be blamed on the team's poor performance lately, he had pitched in tie games or mop-up duty just for the work. Papelbon now has a 1.48 ERA on the season with 14 saves in 15 chances and a 20/9 K/BB ratio in 24 1/3 innings. Despite diminished velocity, Papelbon has been quite reliable for the Phillies.
Papelbon pitches in non-save situation | 06/06/2014 11:03 PM
NewsJonathan Papelbon tossed a scoreless ninth inning Friday in a non-save situation against the Reds.
ImpactThe Phillies were up 8-0 at the time, but Papelbon hadn't pitched in five days and needed the work. He hasn't had a save chance since May 24. Papelbon has allowed just one run since his blowup on April 2 against the Rangers and currently owns a 1.54 ERA and 19/9 K/BB ratio over 23 1/3 innings.
Papelbon earns 13th save in win over LAD | 05/24/2014 5:57 PM
NewsJonathan Papelbon earned his 13th save of 2014 as the Phillies beat the Dodgers 5-3 on Saturday.
ImpactPapelbon gave up a two-out single to Andre Ethier in the top of the ninth inning and then walked A.J. Ellis, but the Phillies' closer then fanned Scott Van Slyke to end the game. He boasts an impressive 1.96 ERA on the year and is 13-for-14 in save chances thus far.
Papelbon's scoreless streak snapped in save | 05/20/2014 11:55 PM
NewsJonathan Papelbon had his streak of 15 consecutive scoreless appearances snapped on Tuesday, but he picked up his 12th save of the season anyway against the Marlins.
ImpactPapelbon walked Christian Yelich to lead off the inning but appeared to be on his way out of trouble after inducing two ground outs. Another walk and a Garrett Jones single later, however, the Marlins were within one run with the tying run on third base. Thankfully for fantasy owners, Papelbon was able to get Jarrod Saltalamacchia to fly out to left field to end the game for his 12th save. Despite a 14/8 K/BB ratio, Papelbon has been great for the Phillies, as he has a 2.08 ERA in 17 1/3 innings.

Papelbon stays hot vs. NYM, earns 11th save | 05/10/2014 11:16 PM
NewsJonathan Papelbon picked up his 11th save of the year Saturday as the Phillies beat the Mets 5-4.
ImpactPapelbon surrendered a two-out walk to Daniel Murphy and Murphy then stole second base, but the Philadelphia closer induced a foul pop-out from David Wright to end the game. Papelbon hasn't allowed a run since April 2 and his season ERA is all the way down to 1.76.
Jonathan Papelbon secures tenth save Friday | 05/10/2014 12:04 AM
NewsJonathan Papelbon secured his 10th save of the season on Friday, working a scoreless 11th inning to preserve a one-run victory over the Mets.
ImpactPapelbon retired all three hitters he faced in order, including a strikeout. He has done a tremendous job in the early going, converting 10 of his first 11 save chances while compiling a 1.88 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 13/4 K/BB ratio through his first 14 1/3 frames. He remains a very solid and dependable closing option.
Papelbon earns ninth save in win over Nats | 05/04/2014 7:43 PM
NewsJonathan Papelbon pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save against the Nationals on Sunday.
ImpactPapelbon allowed a two-out single to Sandy Leon to make it mildly interesting, but he struck out pinch hitter Zach Walters to lock down the 1-0 win. The right-hander remains spotless since his second appearance of the season.
Papelbon picks up eighth save against D'backs | 04/27/2014 8:15 PM
NewsJonathan Papelbon worked a scoreless ninth inning to earn his eighth save of the season on Sunday.
ImpactMiguel Montero singled with one out to bring the tying run to the plate, but Papelbon got Aaron Hill to fly out and Cody Ross to ground out to end the game. After blowing his first save opportunity of the year, Papelbon has now converted eight straight while not allowing a run.
Papelbon picks up seventh save in Phils' win | 04/26/2014 11:27 PM
NewsJonathan Papelbon picked up his seventh save of 2014 in the Phillies' 6-5 win Saturday in Arizona.
ImpactPapelbon gave up a leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth inning to Martin Prado, but he bounced back to retire the next three batters he faced. The Philadelphia closer is looking much more confident now after suffering through some early-season struggles. He currently boasts a 2.61 ERA and 1.16 WHIP.
Papelbon's perfect 9th inning takes 6th save | 04/23/2014 2:04 AM
NewsJonathan Papelbon fired a scoreless ninth inning Tuesday in a 3-2, 10-inning win against the Dodgers for his sixth save of the season.
ImpactThe veteran closer had the flu on Monday, but wasn't needed in a 7-0 victory against Los Angeles. He showed no ill-effects 24 hours later, needing only seven pitches to turn out the lights. Paps retired the first two batters before Yasiel Puig slapped a single to right. Hanley Ramirez lofted a harmless fly to second shortly thereafter to end the affair. Papelbon's ERA sits at a so-so 3.24, but he's hurled eight scoreless appearances around April 2's three-run blown save against the Rangers.
Papelbon (flu) might not be available | 04/21/2014 9:51 PM
NewsPhillies manager Ryne Sandberg said that Jonathan Papelbon is "a little iffy" for Monday's game due to flu-like symptoms.
Matt Gelb on Twitter
ImpactIf Sandberg stays away from Papelbon, Mike Adams or Antonio Bastardo could be used in a save situation Monday. Papelbon should be fine in a day or two.
Papelbon notches fourth save of season | 04/17/2014 3:52 PM
NewsJonathan Papelbon tossed a perfect ninth inning Thursday against the Braves for his fourth save of the season.
ImpactPapelbon, who showed some more oomph on his fastball, notched two strikeouts in the frame. He now has five straight scoreless appearances.
Jonathan Papelbon converts save No. 3 | 04/13/2014 5:41 PM
NewsJonathan Papelbon tossed a perfect ninth inning to nail down his third save of the season in Sunday's win over the Marlins.
ImpactHe got a groundout, a flyout and another groundout to seal the victory. Papelbon was knocked around in his second appearance of the season when he blew a save versus the Rangers, but he's been nearly perfect in his other five appearances. Still, his stuff simply isn't what it once was and fantasy owners should expect some ups and downs.
Papelbon notches second save of season | 04/11/2014 10:59 PM
NewsJonathan Papelbon recorded his second save of the season with a perfect ninth inning Friday against the Marlins.
ImpactHe struck out one batter in the frame. Papelbon seemed to have a bit more giddy-up on his fastball during the brief outing, which is an encouraging sign. Still, his days as a top-tier fantasy closer appear to be long gone.
Papelbon blows save in first appearance | 04/02/2014 11:31 PM
NewsJonathan Papelbon blew the save in his first appearance of 2014, forking over a two-run lead as the Rangers walked-off 4-3 winners on Wednesday.
ImpactThe Rangers walked off for the second day in a row when Shin-Soo Choo drew a walk with the bases loaded. Papelbon, whose velocity was a big concern last season, was sitting at 90-92 MPH with his fastball, several MPH below where he used to be just two years ago. In the inning, Papelbon allowed three runs on four hits and two walks. The 33-year-old seems like he is on the downward slope of his career.
Jonathan Papelbon gives up two runs | 03/16/2014 5:44 PM
NewsJonathan Papelbon gave up a couple of more runs against the Pirates on Sunday.
ImpactPapelbon allowed three hits, but it was two other pitchers that got the most attention: he drilled Starling Marte and just missed Andrew McCutchen with another offering. It's hard to imagine either was intentional, but Papelbon isn't making any new friends. He's allowed seven runs -- two earned -- in four innings this spring.
Jonathan Papelbon allows five unearned runs | 03/10/2014 4:17 PM
NewsJonathan Papelbon was charged with five unearned runs after a Maikel Franco error in the seventh inning Monday.
ImpactAt least he struck out the side. Of course, he gave up four hits and walked a batter along the way. Papelbon often struggles some in spring training, so his getting knocked around today didn't come as a surprise. Still, he is in decline and he represents a poor value as a fantasy closer this year.
Paps: 'There's a little truth to every rumor' | 01/02/2014 11:16 PM
NewsJonathan Papelbon said "there's a little bit of truth to every rumor" when asked about reports that the Phillies are shopping him.
Impact"I don't know," Papelbon responded when asked whether he believed the reports about his availability. "It's hard to say. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know." The closer is owed $26 million over the next two seasons and could be due $39 million over three seasons if he reaches an attainable vesting option for 2016. Paps posted a 2.92 ERA that statheads (due to poor peripherals) and scouts (due to diminished stuff) alike called lucky. Philadelphia will be fortunate to find a taker.
Phillies willing to eat some of Pap's salary | 12/22/2013 9:01 AM
NewsMatt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports that the Phillies are willing to assume some of Jonathan Papelbon's salary in a trade.
ImpactThey're also going to have to be willing to accept very little in return for Papelbon if they want to get something done. The fiery closer is owed $26 million over the next two seasons and could be due $39 over three seasons if he reaches an attainable vesting option for 2016. Though Papelbon posted a 2.92 ERA last year, Gelb says it was a "mirage," his "luck was sky high" and scouts filed "brutal reports" on the reliever. The Orioles are one club known to have interest in Papelbon.
Phillies have talked to O's about Papelbon | 12/20/2013 10:03 PM
NewsRoch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports that the Orioles and Phillies have discussed potential trades involving closer Jonathan Papelbon.
Roch Kubatko on Twitter
ImpactKubatko is quick to note however that a deal isn't imminent and that the Phillies would have to eat a large portion of the $39 million that Papelbon has remaining on his contract over the next three seasons. If the two sides are able to strike a deal, Papelbon also has a limited no-trade clause and may need to approve a trade. The O's are scouring the market after they backed out of their deal with Grant Balfour on Friday.
Phils 'extremely motivated' to deal Papelbon | 12/13/2013 8:43 AM
NewsESPN's Buster Olney has been told by teams that have talked to the Phillies that they're "extremely motivated" to trade Jonathan Papelbon.
Buster Olney on Twitter
ImpactThe problem, of course, is that Papelbon isn't as good as he used to be and will be owed $39 million over the next three seasons if his 2016 option vests. There have also been reports that Papelbon has clashed with his teammates in Philly, and with his no-trade clause he's only able to be dealt to 12 approved teams. If the Phillies are able to trade him, it would have to be a straight salary dump and even then they still might have to eat some money.
Phillies could have trouble dealing Papelbon | 12/06/2013 7:17 PM
NewsRyan Lawrence of the Philadelphia Daily News believes that the Phillies will have difficulty trading closer Jonathan Papelbon.
ImpactA report from Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports suggested earlier in the day that the team was trying to deal the veteran closer, but Lawrence believes that due to his declining skills, $26 million remaining on his contract and his volatile personality, that it may be difficult to do so. Papelbon also possesses a no-trade clause that only allows him to be dealt to 12 approved teams, which makes it rather unlikely that he'll be wearing a new uniform in 2014.
Phillies trying to trade Jonathan Papelbon | 12/06/2013 3:42 PM
NewsFOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Phillies are trying to trade Jonathan Papelbon.
Ken Rosenthal on Twitter
ImpactPapelbon has two years and $26 million left on his contract that also contains a vesting option for a third year. He also had a career-low 8.3 K/9 ratio in 2013 and saw his velocity dip for the second straight season. It's possible the Phillies will be able to convince someone to take him off their hands, but they might have to eat some money in the process. Another issue is that Papelbon has a limited no-trade clause that allows him to stipulate 12 teams to which he will accept a trade.
Papelbon saves 29th as Phils beat Marlins 2-1 | 09/24/2013 10:56 PM
NewsJonathan Papelbon earned his 29th save of the season in the Phillies' 2-1 win over the Marlins on Tuesday.
ImpactIt hasn't been Papelbon's best season, but he's now one save away from recording 30 saves in eight straight seasons. The 32-year-old owns a 2.52 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 60 2/3 innings this season.
Jonathan Papelbon escapes with 27th save | 09/14/2013 10:52 PM
NewsJonathan Papelbon wriggled his way out of a jam during the ninth inning on Saturday, preserving a one-run advantage and earning his 27th save of the season.
ImpactPapelbon took over with the Phillies leading 5-4, and promptly served up a leadoff double to Ryan Zimmerman. After retiring Jayson Werth and Ian Desmond, he issued an intentional walk to Bryce Harper that put the winning run on base, but battled back to get Wilson Ramos to bounce out to shortstop to end the game. Papelbon now sports a 2.50 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 52/10 K/BB ratio over 57 2/3 innings.
Papelbon allows two ninth-inning runs to ATL | 09/07/2013 10:40 PM
NewsJonathan Papelbon allowed two ninth-inning runs but escaped with a win on Saturday against the Braves.
ImpactPapelbon entered the game with the Phillies up 5-3 and allowed a game-tying two-run homer to Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons after a Chris Johnsin single. But the Phillies rebounded in the bottom of the ninth on a Freddy Galvis walkoff blast. Papelbon hadn't allowed a run in a month. His job is secure.
Jonathan Papelbon records rare save | 08/19/2013 10:19 PM
NewsJonathan Papelbon notched his first save since July 11 with a scoreless ninth Monday against the Rockies.
ImpactIt was just Papelbon's ninth appearance in the 4 1/2 weeks since the All-Star break. He had blown his only two save chances since he picked up his 20th save way back on July 11. Unless the Phillies get it together, Papelbon's streak of seven consecutive 30-save seasons will come to an end.
Papelbon fires scoreless ninth, earns victory | 08/18/2013 5:08 PM
NewsJonathan Papelbon hurled a scoreless ninth inning and picked up the win against the Dodgers on Sunday.
ImpactHe struck out two and allowed a single. Papelbon fired a clean frame in the top of the ninth in a 2-2 contest and the Phillies scored in the bottom half of the inning to gift the closer with his third victory. The 54-69 Phillies don't produce many save opportunities, which is why their pricey closer hadn't pitched in a week. Incredibly, Papelbon (2.70 ERA) hasn't earned a save in over a month.
Papelbon has blown six saves since June 1 | 08/15/2013 8:46 PM
NewsJonathan Papelbon is just 10-for-16 in save conversions since his last appearance of May, posting a disappointing 4.15 ERA over 26 innings.
ImpactPapelbon's two August implosions are a more pressing story, but the veteran closer's struggles stretch back longer than that. He's allowed a .329 BABIP since May 29 and a .444 BABIP in August, one reason we don't see his struggles continuing. Paps owns a 2.76 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 42/9 K/BB ratio.
Jonathan Papelbon blows save, takes loss | 08/01/2013 10:10 PM
NewsJonathan Papelbon took a blown save and a loss after giving up two runs in the ninth Thursday against the Giants.
ImpactPapelbon certainly isn't backing up his big mouth lately; he's blown his only two save chances since the All-Star break and he's now just 20-for-26 saving games this year. His overall stats are just fine -- he has a 2.59 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP -- but he's paid big dollars to close out games and he's not doing his job.
Papelbon charged with his fifth blown save | 07/14/2013 7:32 PM
NewsJonathan Papelbon was charged with his fifth blown save when he allowed a run on two hits in the ninth inning Sunday against the White Sox.
ImpactChicago extended the game into extra-innings, but the Phillies scored in the bottom of the 10th to win 4-3. Papelbon went 20-for-25 in save conversions during an up-and-down first half, posting a 2.33 ERA and 0.91 WHIP.
Papelbon picks up 20th save against the Nats | 07/12/2013 12:13 AM
NewsJonathan Papelbon picked up his 20th save by tossing a perfect ninth inning Thursday against the Nationals.
ImpactHe struck out a batter and needed only 10 pitches to record three outs. Phillies manager Charlie Manuel mentioned to the media that Papelbon has dealt with hip soreness in 2013. The veteran closer isn't showing it, posting a 2.21 ERA and 0.87 WHIP through 36 appearances.
Jonathan Papelbon records 19th save | 07/08/2013 10:06 PM
NewsJonathan Papelbon picked up his 19th save despite giving up two runs in his inning of work Monday against the Nationals.
ImpactThe Nationals offense was quite all night until Papelbon came in and gave up a single and a double to start the ninth. Back-to-back sac flies brought in the two runs, but since Papelbon had a three-run lead to work with, the only damage was to his ERA. The runs were the first he had allowed in six outings since blowing his last save on June 24.
Jonathan Papelbon picks up 15th save | 06/27/2013 2:25 AM
NewsJonathan Papelbon pitched a scoreless 13th inning Wednesday against the Padres to halt his streak of three straight blown saves.
ImpactPapelbon had blown four of five opportunities before protecting a two-run lead tonight. He retired three of the four batters he faced tonight, with only an Jesus Guzman single mixed in.
Papelbon blows 3rd consecutive save vs. Pads | 06/25/2013 2:01 AM
NewsJonathan Papelbon blew his third consecutive save Monday against the Padres.
ImpactPaps has now blown four saves in his last five appearances. Called on in the ninth inning of a 3-0 game with two runners on, Papelbon allowed a single and hit a batter before he coaxed Yasmani Grandal into a double play.
