|Assets:||His best attribute is his razor-sharp command of a deep arsenal of pitches. Can throw his fastball, change-up, curve and slider for first-pitch strikes. Is a workhorse and a leader.|
|Flaws:||Would be better if he cut down on the number of base-runners he puts on via either hit or walk. Lacks a dominant pitch and right-handed bats have an easier time against him.|

Dodgers left-hander Paul Maholm will miss the rest of the season due to a torn ACL, according to Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times. | 08/02/2014 5:10 PM
NewsDodgers left-hander Paul Maholm will miss the rest of the season due to a torn ACL, according to Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times.
ImpactMaholm offered nothing to fantasy owners with a 1-5 record, 4.84 ERA and 1.56 WHIP.
Paul Maholm combines on shutout of Padres | 07/13/2014 1:14 AM
NewsFilling in for Josh Beckett, Paul Maholm held the Padres scoreless for six innings on Saturday.
ImpactMaholm entered with a 5.18 ERA and he hadn't pitched more than 2 1/3 innings in an outing in two months, so of course he combined on a shutout of the Padres. He allowed just two hits, walked none and struck out four while throwing 65 pitches in his six innings. It's the first time since April 14, 2013 that he's escaped a start without allowing a run.
Paul Maholm likely to start on Saturday | 07/10/2014 9:49 PM
NewsPaul Maholm is likely to start on Saturday against the Padres in place of the injured Josh Beckett (hip).
ImpactHe's expected to take the ball unless he's needed relief on Thursday or Friday. Red Patterson will be on standby at Triple-A Albuquerque in case Maholm does have to pitch in relief over the next couple days. He can be avoided for fantasy purposes.
Maholm gets whacked around for 10 R by Fish | 05/15/2014 1:33 AM
NewsPaul Maholm was pummeled for 10 runs -- five earned -- on 11 hits over 3 2/3 innings Wednesday in a blowout loss to the Marlins.
ImpactIt wasn't pretty. Maholm failed to strike out a batter, he walked three, and he was kicked all around the park for 11 hits. Two of those hits were home runs off the bats of Ed Lucas and Reed Johnson. Indeed, this was a Miami lineup batting Jeff Baker cleanup, Johnson No. 5, and started Jeff Mathis so Jarrod Saltalamacchia could have a day off. It's no certainty that the Dodgers will keep Maholm's 5.40 ERA and 1.73 ERA in the rotation, but if they do, he'll square off against the Mets in New York next week.
Paul Maholm gives up three runs in loss | 05/10/2014 2:04 AM
NewsPaul Maholm gave up three runs over 5 2/3 innings in a loss to the Giants on Friday.
ImpactMaholm helped the Dodgers' cause by breaking Brandon Belt's thumb, though we hope he wouldn't chalk that up as a positive. He's 1-3 with a 4.71 ERA, and the Dodgers would happily bounce him from the rotation if they could get healthy.
Paul Maholm picks up first win of year | 04/27/2014 1:10 AM
NewsPaul Maholm put himself into the win column with seven innings of two-run ball Saturday against the Rockies.
ImpactThe only extra-base hit against Maholm tonight was a routine fly that Matt Kemp lost in the twilight, giving Wilin Rosario a double. Maholm is likely looking at getting one more start before Clayton Kershaw rejoins the Dodgers rotation. That will probably result in Maholm getting demoted to the pen.
Maholm gets whacked around by the Phillies | 04/22/2014 1:13 AM
NewsPaul Maholm was chased for five runs -- four earned -- over five innings Monday in a 7-0 loss to the Phillies.
ImpactThe veteran southpaw surrendered eight hits and three walks while striking out only two. He also gave up a two-run homer to Ryan Howard, who, well, doesn't generally pound lefties. He'll make an exception for Mr. Maholm, who the Dodgers must tolerate in the rotation until Clayton Kershaw returns. Maholm (0-2, 5.60 ERA) welcomes the Rockies to Hollywood on Saturday.
Maholm works six quality innings in ND vs. SF | 04/17/2014 1:28 AM
NewsPaul Maholm surrendered only one run on five hits over six innings of a no-decision against the Giants on Wednesday.
ImpactHe whiffed two and walked three in his best start since August 28. The left-hander entered this game with an 8.10 ERA, but that was mostly because he got bombed by the Giants in his only other start of the year back on April 5. His rotation spot is safe until Clayton Kershaw comes back. Maholm will toe the Chavez Ravine rubber with his shiny new 4.97 ERA against Philadelphia next week.
Maholm throws bullpen, on track to start Sat. | 04/02/2014 6:25 PM
NewsPaul Maholm threw a bullpen session Wednesday and is on track to make his first start with the Dodgers on Saturday, according to MLB.com's Ken Gurnick.
Ken Gurnick on Twitter
ImpactThe team hasn't announced its rotation for the upcoming series against the Giants, so it's still just speculation that Maholm will get the start. The bullpen session lines him up to do just that, though, and the team is still searching for another starter in the wake of Clayton Kershaw's injury. The southpaw was signed to a one-year deal by the Dodgers in February as depth for these types of situations, and he's working his way back after being sidelined by some elbow soreness early in camp.
Maholm torched by the Reds | 03/13/2014 5:04 PM
NewsPaul Maholm was torched by the Reds in his Thursday start, allowing six runs (five earned) in 2 2/3 innings.
ImpactMaholm didn't record a strikeout, issued two walks, and allowed six hits. Two of them were home runs: a solo shot to Todd Frazier in the first inning, and a three-run bomb to Chris Heisey in the third. Maholm has been bothered by elbow soreness and is on the outside looking in for a spot at the back of the Dodgers' rotation.
Maholm (elbow) unsure about Australia status | 03/08/2014 8:00 PM
NewsPaul Maholm (elbow) doesn't know if he'll be on the club's trip to Australia.
ImpactThe projected sixth starter allowed one run on three hits over three innings in a 5-5 tie with the Rangers on Saturday. "I'm just preparing to pitch wherever they tell me to," Maholm said. "If I pitch well, everything will work out. I'm not concerned with roles." MLB.com speculates that Maholm is a candidate to pitch the exhibition game against Team Australia two days prior to the Opening Series against Arizona. If that happened, Maholm would be designated as one of three "exempt" players, meaning he couldn't appear against the Snakes. Zach Lee and Matt Magill are two other candidates for those posts, reports the team's official site.
Paul Maholm appears in intrasquad game | 02/25/2014 7:59 PM
NewsPaul Maholm (elbow) pitched two innings in an intrasquad game Tuesday.
ImpactIt appears that the elbow soreness Maholm was dealing with early in camp is in the rear view mirror. Josh Beckett (thoracic outlet surgery) is also looking healthy, which means Maholm is currently in line to open the year in a long relief role.
Paul Maholm to throw bullpen session Sat. | 02/21/2014 11:45 AM
NewsPaul Maholm (elbow) has been cleared to throw a bullpen session Saturday.
Eric Stephen on Twitter
ImpactMaholm dealt with some elbow tenderness earlier this week, but the hope is that it's just routine early spring training soreness. The veteran left-hander will operate as a long man in the bullpen for the Dodgers as long as Josh Beckett (thoracic outlet surgery) is healthy.
Maholm (elbow) expects to throw Saturday | 02/20/2014 3:43 PM
NewsPaul Maholm (elbow) expects to throw a scheduled bullpen session on Saturday in Dodgers camp.
J.P. Hoonstra on Twitter
ImpactMaholm came down with some elbow tenderness earlier this week, but the hope is that it's only a minor thing. The veteran left-hander signed a one-year, $1.5 million free agent contract with the Dodgers in early February and will provide insurance for the club's rotation throughout the 2014 season if his health cooperates.
Paul Maholm dealing with elbow tenderness | 02/20/2014 12:27 PM
NewsPaul Maholm is dealing with elbow tenderness.
Ken Gurnick on Twitter
ImpactMaholm experienced the elbow discomfort after throwing four bullpen sessions to open camp. He has yet to throw live batting practice and the Dodgers aren't sure when he might be cleared. This could become a real issue if the tenderness lingers into March.
Paul Maholm could work out of Dodgers pen | 02/09/2014 4:22 PM
NewsAccording to Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times, the recently-signed Paul Maholm could wind up working out of the Dodgers bullpen if Josh Beckett is healthy and able to claim the fifth spot in the rotation.
Los Angeles Times
ImpactThe first four spots in the rotation are locked up with Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke, Hyun-Jin Ryu and Dan Haren, making Maholm insurance in the event that Beckett, who is recovering from surgery to repair a nerve issue, isn't available for the start of the season. His fantasy value would be non-existent if he doesn't earn a place in the rotation.
Dodgers, Maholm agree to $1.5 million pact | 02/08/2014 7:04 PM
NewsDodgers signed LHP Paul Maholm to a one-year, $1.5 million contract.
ImpactIt's a major league deal, and it could be worth more if Maholm is able to meet some incentives. The southpaw started 26 games for the Braves last season, going 10-11 with a 4.41 ERA. The Dodgers were one of the teams in on Bronson Arroyo until the end as well, so in Maholm they've finally gotten the insurance they were looking for at the back of their rotation. Scott Elbert was moved to the 60-day disabled list to make room for Maholm.
Dodgers could be close to signing Maholm | 02/08/2014 11:11 AM
NewsDylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times reports that there is currently a locker with Paul Maholm's name on it in the Dodgers clubhouse.
ImpactThat presumably means that the team is close to a deal with the free agent southpaw, who's currently on location and taking a physical. With an already cluttered rotation, Maholm would likely serve as the team's fifth starter and an insurance policy in case Josh Beckett and Chad Billingsley don't recover as quickly as expected. It would be a good landing spot for Maholm, and a nice boost to his overall fantasy value.
Paul Maholm says Rangers have contacted him | 01/15/2014 3:38 PM
NewsPaul Maholm told Jim Bowden of ESPN.com and MLB Network Radio on Sirius XM on Wednesday that the Rangers are one of the teams who have checked in on him.
Jim Bowden on Twitter
ImpactIt's not surprising to see the Rangers looking at alternatives for their rotation now that Derek Holland will be sidelined until midseason following knee surgery. The market for Maholm has been surprisingly quiet this winter after he posted a 4.26 ERA and 105/47 K/BB ratio over 153 innings last season with the Braves.
Report: Twins 'keeping tabs' on Maholm | 12/12/2013 1:35 PM
NewsESPN's Jerry Crasnick hears that the Twins are "keeping tabs" on free agent left-hander Paul Maholm.
Jerry Crasnick on Twitter
ImpactAdd another name to the list alongside Mike Pelfrey, Bronson Arroyo and Matt Garza. Maholm, 31, had a 4.26 ERA and 105/47 K/BB ratio over 153 innings in 26 starts this year with the Braves. The veteran southpaw would be another solid addition to complement Ricky Nolasco and Phil Hughes.
Braves sending pitchers to instructional lg. | 10/02/2013 3:00 PM
NewsThe Braves are sending Paul Maholm, Scott Downs, and Anthony Varvaro to the instructional league to continue throwing.
Kevin McAlpin on Twitter
ImpactAll three pitchers were left off the roster for the NLDS against the Dodgers, but the Braves still want them to get work in. It's possible they could be an option at some point during the playoffs.
Maholm allows three runs in loss to Brewers | 09/25/2013 9:52 PM
NewsPaul Maholm allowed three runs over seven innings in a loss against the Brewers on Wednesday.
ImpactThe lefty was solid but he was outdueled by his counterpart Kyle Lohse, who threw a complete-game shutout. Maholm allowed eight hits, including the first-inning homer to Carlos Gomez that ended with the benches clearing, while striking out seven. He finishes the year at 10-11 with a 4.41 ERA, a mild disappointment given how strong he was out of the gate.
Paul Maholm to rejoin rotation on Friday | 09/18/2013 7:18 PM
NewsPaul Maholm (elbow) will rejoin the Braves' rotation on Friday in Chicago.
Mark Bowman on Twitter
ImpactMaholm missed a start due to a sore elbow, but an MRI came back clean and he's been cleared to return to action. The southpaw holds a 4.35 ERA and 1.42 WHIP this season and isn't much of a fantasy option even against the weak Cubs' lineup.
Paul Maholm's MRI comes back negative | 09/11/2013 10:22 PM
NewsAn MRI on Paul Maholm's left elbow came back negative.
David O'Brien on Twitter
ImpactMaholm will be skipped for one start before being re-evaluated. It's obviously good news, but with elbow issues this late in the season, he's no safe bet to make another start for the Braves. It's unlikely he would have been part of the team's postseason rotation.

Maholm allows one run over six innings of ND | 08/29/2013 12:44 AM
NewsPaul Maholm allowed one run over six innings but took a no-decision against the Indians on Wednesday.
ImpactMaholm gave up six hits and two walks, with Mike Aviles' solo home run in the fourth inning the only blemish on the night. It would have been Maholm's 10th win, but the bullpen suffered a blown save in relief of the left-hander. His second start off the disabled list went much better than his first, and he'll look to keep it going Monday against the Mets.
Paul Maholm loses to Cards in return | 08/22/2013 11:49 PM
NewsPaul Maholm gave up five runs -- four earned -- in 5 1/3 innings to lose to the Cardinals in his return from the DL on Thursday.
ImpactThe Braves were going to put Maholm back in the rotation anyway, but he'd be their sixth best starter if Brandon Beachy is healthy. He's now 9-10 with a 4.51 ERA for the season.

NewsBraves activated LHP Paul Maholm from the 15-day disabled list.

NewsPaul Maholm (wrist) hopes to throw a light bullpen session off the mound sometime this weekend.
ImpactMaholm is eligible to return from the disabled list on Monday, but the earliest he'd return is August 10 against Miami. "We'll see how he throws this weekend on the side and see what he needs after that," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "My thinking is he may need (to throw) some BP or a sim(ulated) game, or maybe even a couple of innings in a rehab start before we run him back out there to face live major league hitters."

NewsPaul Maholm held the Nationals to three runs -- two earned -- over six frames in Sunday's 6-3 win.
ImpactThe left-hander permitted just five hits, didn't walk anyone and struck out four. The Tigers struck for four runs in the third inning, and tacked on another four-spot in the fourth before chasing Maholm from the game. Even with this abysmal outing, he'll still take a solid 3-2 record, 3.30 ERA and 28/11 K/BB ratio into Wednesday's home tilt against the Nationals.
