|Assets:||A rare mix of command and competitiveness, he is a highly durable strikeout pitcher who rarely walks batters. Big, strong, and athletic, he uses a fluid, consistent delivery to dominate with his fastball.|
|Flaws:||Gives up a fair share of homers (though mostly solo shots), in part because he throws so many strikes. Therefore, he could stand to mix it up a little bit more.|
|Career Potential:||Excellent starter.|

Colletti: Dodgers could add another starter | 11/25/2013 8:01 PM
NewsDodgers GM Ned Colletti said he is open to the idea of adding another starting pitcher.

ImpactLos Angeles officially signed Dan Haren to a one-year, $10 million contract on Monday, seemingly completing their five-man rotation (Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke, Hyun-Jin Ryu and Josh Beckett). Beckett underwent season-ending surgery in mid-July on his right shoulder but is expected to be ready to go next spring.
Dodgers officially sign Haren to 1-year deal | 11/25/2013 7:36 PM
NewsDodgers signed SP Dan Haren to a one-year, $10 million contract.
ImpactHaren can also earn up to $3 million in potential incentives. The pact includes a player option in 2015 that will vest if the 33-year-old hurler reaches 180 innings pitched in 2014. This is a marriage of convenience, as Haren will look to get his career back on track in a pitcher-friendly ballpark after two consecutive injury-plagued seasons, and the deep-pocketed Dodgers fill their No. 5 rotation spot with a high-upside free agent without having to guarantee more than one season of salary. Keep in mind that this exact plan didn't end well for the Nationals, who paid $13 million for a 4.67 ERA in 2013.
Dodgers agree to one-year deal with Dan Haren | 11/24/2013 10:07 PM
NewsKen Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports that the Dodgers agreed to terms with Dan Haren on a one-year, $10 million contract.
Ken Rosenthal on Twitter
ImpactThe deal is pending a physical, and also includes an option for 2015 that vests if the 33-year-old hurler reaches 180 innings pitched in 2014. Coming off of two extremely disappointing and injury plagued efforts, Haren will look to get his career back on track in the friendly confines of Dodger stadium.
Dodgers have been in touch with Dan Haren | 11/20/2013 1:18 PM
NewsMark Saxon of ESPN Los Angeles reports that the Dodgers have been in touch with Dan Haren's agent.
Mark Saxon on Twitter
ImpactIt's unclear whether it's just a matter of due diligence on the part of the Dodgers, but Saxon hears that there is mutual interest. Haren had a 4.67 ERA over 169 2/3 innings this past season, but resembled his old form after the All-Star break.
Giants have checked in on Dan Haren | 11/18/2013 4:41 PM
NewsHenry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that the Giants checked in on Dan Haren, but that other teams are "far more aggressive" about signing him.
Henry Schulman on Twitter
ImpactThe Giants are in the market for another starting pitcher even after reportedly agreeing to a deal with Tim Hudson, but it appears that they'll be priced out on Haren. The 33-year-old posted a mediocre 4.67 ERA over 169 2/3 innings with the Nationals this past season, but he was much better during the second half.
Dan Haren among many options for Yankees | 11/09/2013 10:33 AM
NewsJon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that the Yankees have already shown interest in several free agent starting pitchers including Dan Haren, Matt Garza, Ubaldo Jimenez, Bronson Arroyo and Scott Feldman.
ImpactThey've also expressed a very strong desire to secure the rights to Masahiro Tanaka. With the departure of Andy Pettitte and the uncertainty around Hiroki Kuroda, there could be several openings in the Bombers rotation next season. The 33-year-old Haren is coming off a disappointing season with the Nationals in which he posted a 4.67 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 151/31 K/BB ratio over 169 2/3 innings. While his 3.67 xFIP hints that he pitched better than his ERA would indicate, he's posted extreme HR/9 rates higher than 1.43 in each of the past two seasons, which would certainly be a major concern with a move to Yankee Stadium.
Dan Haren dominates D'Backs to earn 10th win | 09/28/2013 10:54 PM
NewsDan Haren looked to be in vintage form on Saturday, spinning seven scoreless innings in a victory over the Diamondbacks.
ImpactHaren allowed just four hits and a walk on the night, while punching out five. The 33-year-old right-hander was a major disappointment in his first season with the Nationals, finishing with a 10-14 record, 4.67 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 151/31 K/BB ratio over 169 2/3 innings. Haren pitched his best baseball of the season in the month of September, which should help him immensely when generating interest on the free agent market this offseason.
Dan Haren holds Braves to one run | 09/17/2013 4:27 PM
NewsDan Haren limited the Braves to one run and three hits in six innings on Tuesday.
ImpactHaren didn't get the win for the effort, as the bullpen struggled behind him, but he did turn in a second straight strong outing for the resurgent Nationals. He's 1-0 with a save and a 1.20 ERA in 15 innings against the Braves this year.
Braves vs. Nationals postponed after shooting | 09/16/2013 3:04 PM
NewsMonday night's game between the Nationals and Braves in Washington, D.C. has been postponed.
Tom Hart on Twitter
ImpactThere was a mass shooting Monday morning at the U.S. Navy Yard, adjacent to the Nationals' home stadium, that left 12 people dead. Calling the game was the right decision, even if no threat remains in the area. Dan Haren was scheduled to pitch for the Nats and Mike Minor was on tap for the visiting Braves. There will be a split doubleheader on Tuesday.
Nationals, Braves cleared to head to stadium | 09/16/2013 1:39 PM
NewsThe Nationals and Braves were given clearance at noon ET to travel to Nationals Park.
David O'Brien on Twitter
ImpactThere was a mass shooting on Monday morning at the U.S. Navy Yard in Washington D.C., just blocks away from Nationals Park. But authorities have cleared the area around the stadium and there's a chance Monday night's game will go on as planned. Dan Haren is scheduled to pitch for Washington and Mike Minor is set to start for Atlanta. Expect updates throughout the afternoon.
Nats told to avoid stadium following shooting | 09/16/2013 11:19 AM
NewsThe Nationals and Braves have been told to stay away from Nationals Park in the wake of the shooting Monday morning at the nearby U.S. Navy Yard in Washington, D.C.
Amanda Comak on Twitter
ImpactThe report from NBC News: "A gunman armed with a rifle and perhaps a handgun opened fire Monday inside a building at the Washington Navy Yard - killing at least four people and wounding at least six more, including a security guard and a city police officer, authorities said. SWAT officers swarmed the building, the headquarters of the Naval Sea Systems Command. The shooter was believed to be wounded, a source told NBC News, and crews were combing the facility to make sure there were no other gunmen." Dan Haren is scheduled to pitch for Washington and Mike Minor is on tap for the Braves, but Nationals Park is just blocks from the U.S. Navy Yard and shares the same metro stop. The game could very well be postponed.
Haren blanks Mets over six, Nationals win 3-0 | 09/11/2013 10:55 PM
NewsDan Haren allowed just one hit over six innings as the Nationals downed the Mets 3-0 on Wednesday.
ImpactComing off a start in which he lasted just three innings, Haren yielded just a leadoff single to Juan Lagares in the fourth inning over his six innings of work. The 32-year-old struck out eight in the outing, his highest total in a game since May 25. His assignment gets tougher his next time out when he takes on the Braves next week.
Dan Haren knocked around in loss to Marlins | 09/06/2013 9:44 PM
NewsDan Haren was knocked around in Friday's loss to the Marlins, surrendering five runs on six hits over just three innings of work.
ImpactHaren did manage to rack up five strikeouts while walking a pair in the abbreviated outing. The Marlins jumped on him early, scoring three times in the first inning, and added a pair in the third on a towering home run by Logan Morrison. The veteran right-hander continues to struggle, and will carry a troublesome 5.23 ERA and 1.31 WHIP into Wednesday's matchup against the Mets in New York. He's very difficult to trust in mixed leagues at this point.
Haren allows seven runs over 2 2/3 innings | 08/31/2013 10:43 PM
NewsDan Haren allowed seven runs over 2 2/3 innings in a loss to the Mets on Saturday.
ImpactHaren has been very good for much of the second half, so Saturday was an uncharacteristic meltdown for the right-hander. He gave up nine hits and seven runs, striking out three. The loss was just his first since July 22. He'll have a good shot to get back in the groove Friday against the Marlins in Miami.
Nationals want 'group of prospects' for Haren | 08/26/2013 8:29 AM
NewsDerrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the Nationals want a "group of prospects" for Dan Haren, who cleared waivers earlier this month.
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
ImpactThe Cardinals are among the teams with apparent interest in acquiring Haren, but it sounds like the price is sky high. Haren allowed four earned runs in a seven-inning start Sunday against the Royals but he boasts a 2.53 ERA and 54/11 K/BB ratio in 57 innings since the beginning of July. He'll be eligible for a trade until August 31.
Haren stymies Cubs in Nationals' 4-2 victory | 08/21/2013 12:29 AM
NewsDan Haren allowed one run over six innings in the Nationals' 4-2 win over the Cubs on Tuesday.
ImpactAfter earning his first career save on Saturday, Haren returned to a more comfortable role Tuesday. The right-hander allowed just five hits while striking out six, giving up only a Brian Bogusevic home run in the outing. He's now rattled off four straight wins to move to 8-11 on the year. He'll attempt to move another step closer to .500 against the Royals in Kansas City on Sunday.
Haren earns first career save, Nationals win | 08/18/2013 12:56 AM
NewsDan Haren earned his first career save Saturday in the Nationals' defeat of the Braves.
ImpactHaren entered in the 15th inning when the Nats ran out of available relievers and allowed a single but struck out two in a scoreless frame. He was scheduled to start Tuesday and might now have to be pushed back. The right-hander has been good in any role as of late.
Dan Haren pitches well in no-decision | 08/15/2013 8:04 PM
NewsDan Haren deserved a win but got a no-decision Thursday, holding the Giants to one run over six innings in a loss.
ImpactHaren struck out three while surrendering just three hits and two walks. Brandon Belt's solo blast in the sixth inning was the lone mark against him. The right-hander has been terrific since returning form the disabled list, posting a 2.30 ERA over seven starts. He's reportedly cleared waivers, so it will be interesting to see if anyone takes a shot at trading for him.
Dan Haren passes through waivers | 08/14/2013 9:34 PM
NewsFOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that Dan Haren has cleared waivers.
Ken Rosenthal on Twitter
ImpactIt's no surprise, given his $13 million salary. Haren has pitched really well of late, though, posting a 2.43 ERA over six starts since returning from the disabled list, so it's possible someone might try to make a deal for him.
Dan Haren dominant in victory over Phillies | 08/09/2013 9:45 PM
NewsDan Haren yielded two runs over seven strong innings Friday in a 9-2 win over the Phillies.
ImpactHaren was in control throughout, limiting the Phillies to just four hits and no walks while strikeout seven batters. He now has a 2.43 ERA and 39/8 K/BB ratio 37 innings over six starts since returning from the disabled list. Seemingly healthy and keeping the ball in the ballpark, he's looking like a good option again in mixed fantasy leagues. Give him a try next week against the light-hitting Giants.
Dan Haren placed on waivers | 08/08/2013 6:27 PM
NewsCBS Sports' Danny Knobler reports that the Nationals placed Dan Haren on waivers Thursday.
Danny Knobler on Twitter
ImpactHe's one of many that will go through the waiver process this month. Haren has mostly pitched well of late, but he's still owed just under $3.7 million for the remainder of the season, so it remains to be seen if anyone will be willing to pick up that price tag.
Haren dominates Brewers for seven innings | 08/03/2013 10:08 PM
NewsDan Haren went seven scoreless innings Saturday in the Nationals' 3-0 victory over the Brewers.
ImpactThat's now two straight dominant outings for the 32-year-old right-hander, who held the Mets to one run over seven innings last week. Haren has been prone to blowups this season but he should do well against the Phillies next time out. He may finally get a chance to settle in.
Haren holds Mets to one run in seven innings | 07/27/2013 6:39 PM
NewsDan Haren held the Mets to one run in seven innings Saturday to earn his fifth win of the season.
ImpactHaren had little trouble navigating the Mets lineup, allowing just three hits and one walk while fanning six. He has been very inconsistent this season and has a 5.49 ERA and 1.35 WHIP to show for it. The right-hander is a risky fantasy play next week in Milwaukee.
Dan Haren gives up five runs in loss | 07/22/2013 10:51 PM
NewsDan Haren surrendered five runs in five innings Monday in a loss to the Pirates.
ImpactAfter going his first two starts back without allowing a homer, Haren gave up a pair of bombs tonight, both to Andrew McCutchen. That makes 21 homers allowed in 98 innings for the season. The Nationals have lost each of his last 11 starts.
Dan Haren exceptional in no-decision vs. Fish | 07/13/2013 10:57 PM
NewsDan Haren pitched an exceptional game in a no-decision against the Marlins on Saturday, allowing just three hits and a walk over six scoreless innings while punching out seven.
ImpactHaren has now allowed just two earned runs in 11 innings since returning from the disabled list, posting a 14/3 K/BB ratio in the process. Provided that he's fully recovered from the shoulder injuries that have plagued his last two seasons, Haren could deliver tremendous fantasy value in the second half of the season.
Dan Haren strikes out seven in return | 07/08/2013 10:03 PM
NewsDan Haren was effective in his return from the disabled list, yielding two runs in five innings and striking out seven against the Phillies on Monday.
ImpactThat's about the best the Nationals could have hoped for after he went without making a rehab start. Unfortunately, it wasn't good enough for the team tonight. John Lannan, the pitcher they exiled to "upgrade" to Haren, shut them out for eight innings.
Dan Haren activated from 15-day disabled list | 07/08/2013 5:41 PM
NewsNationals activated RHP Dan Haren from the 15-day disabled list.
ImpactSidelined since June 22 with shoulder inflammation, Haren will return to start Monday night against the Phillies. The veteran right-hander holds an ugly 6.15 ERA through 15 starts this season and can be avoided in fantasy leagues for now.

NewsDan Haren (shoulder) will throw a simulated game on Wednesday.
ImpactHaren made it through a bullpen session Sunday without any issues before being cleared to face hitters. He could rejoin the Nationals' rotation on July 8 when first eligible, which means he'll likely avoid a rehab assignment.

NewsDan Haren (shoulder) said that he expects to require the minimum stay on the disabled list.
ImpactHaren made it through a bullpen session Sunday without any issues and is scheduled to throw a simulated game early this week before being reevaluated. If all goes well, he could rejoin the Nationals' rotation on July 8 when first eligible.

NewsDan Haren was given a cortisone shot in his right shoulder.
ImpactHaren was placed on the disabled list Tuesday after an MRI revealed inflammation and no structural damage. He plans to begin throwing again in a day or two and appears on track to return around the All-Star break.
Haren placed on DL with shoulder inflammation | 06/25/2013 11:16 AM
NewsNationals placed RHP Dan Haren on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 23, with right shoulder inflammation.
ImpactHaren told reporters that he felt he could pitch through his shoulder issue, but the Nationals would prefer that the struggling right-hander get some time off. Signed to a one-year, $13 million contract over the winter, Haren has an ugly 6.15 ERA through 15 starts this season. Tyler Moore will take his spot on the roster for now, though the Nationals are reportedly considering calling up Taylor Jordan to fill his rotation spot.

Nats expected to place Dan Haren on DL | 06/23/2013 12:46 PM
NewsThe Nationals are expected to place Dan Haren on the disabled list.
Charlie Slowes on Twitter
ImpactHaren has maintained throughout his struggles that he's healthy, so the Nats might be creating a phantom injury in order to get him out of the rotation for a while. Then again, it's possible his back is giving him trouble again. Haren was knocked around again Saturday and holds a 6.15 ERA through 15 starts. Ross Ohlendorf seems likely to replace him in the rotation.
Haren struggles again, ERA jumps to 6.15 | 06/22/2013 3:05 PM
NewsDan Haren was blasted for six runs in 3 1/3 innings Saturday in a loss to the Rockies.
ImpactOuch. Haren struck out five and walked none, but gave up seven hits, including his league-leading 19th home run of the season. With his ERA now at an eye-popping 6.15 through 15 starts, the struggling right-hander may soon be at risk for losing his rotation spot.
Dan Haren gives up four runs to Phillies | 06/17/2013 10:55 PM
NewsDan Haren gave up four runs and seven hits in six innings Monday in a no-decision against the Phillies.
ImpactHaren struck out 10 Phillies last time he faced them on May 25. Tonight, he managed just three strikeouts, which is closer to his norm for the season. He's giving up too many homers, he's not working deep into games and he's not getting much support from the offense. Until something there changes, he'll remains pretty much worthless in fantasy leagues.
Haren ineffective in Nationals' loss to Mets | 06/05/2013 10:51 PM
NewsDan Haren lasted only four innings on Wednesday, allowing five runs as the Nationals fell to the Mets.
ImpactHaren has taken some tough losses of late, but this one was deserved. The right-hander served up three home runs, including two to Marlon Byrd, in his four innings and gave up seven hits in all. The loss dropped him to 4-7 and raised his ERA to 5.45 through 12 starts. His next start will come Tuesday against the Rockies in Colorado.
Haren allows three runs, Nats lose to Phils | 05/25/2013 10:30 PM
NewsDan Haren yielded three earned runs over six innings Saturday as the Nationals fell to the Phillies.
ImpactHaren racked up a whopping 10 strikeouts and allowed only four hits, but two of them were home runs. He has looked good at times this season, but the consistency has not been there. Haren will take a 4-5 record, 5.43 ERA and 1.37 WHIP into his next start against the Orioles.
Haren struggles in loss to Padres | 05/19/2013 8:34 PM
NewsDan Haren was pulled in the fifth inning after giving up seven runs Sunday in a loss to the Padres.
ImpactHaren suffered an ankle injury during his last start and may not be completely healthy. He allowed three runs in the first inning and was victimized by a pair of home runs to Will Venable and Kyle Blanks. Haren is in position to bounce back with a matchup against the Phillies next week.
Haren delivers best start of season vs. Reds | 04/27/2013 4:33 PM
NewsDan Haren delivered his best start of the season Saturday, allowing two runs in six innings in a 6-3 win over the Reds.
ImpactA nice step forward for Haren, who had failed to pitch more than five innings in his previous four starts. He gave up six hits (including a home run) while striking out five and walking none. Haren owes an assist to Denard Span, who robbed Joey Votto of extra bases with a leaping catch at the wall in the sixth inning. While it was an encouraging outing, we wouldn't trust him in fantasy leagues with a matchup against the homer-happy Braves next week.
Dan Haren gives up three runs to Cards | 04/22/2013 10:20 PM
NewsDan Haren lost to the Cardinals after allowing three runs in five innings on Monday night.
ImpactHaren has yet to deliver a quality start in four trips to the mound. At least in his first three starts, he had a 12/1 K/BB ratio. Tonight, he struck out three, walked three and hit a batter. A quick turnaround hardly appears likely.
Haren rocked again as Nationals fall to Miami | 04/16/2013 10:04 PM
NewsDan Haren allowed seven runs -- three earned -- in 4 1/3 innings Tuesday as the Nationals fell to the Marlins.
ImpactHaren didn't get much help from his defense but also looked far too hittable. The 32-year-old right-hander is now sporting a hideous 8.13 ERA, 2.03 WHIP and 12/1 K/BB ratio over his first 13 1/3 innings with the Nationals. Bench him for now in fantasy leagues.
Dan Haren strikes out five in victory | 04/11/2013 10:46 PM
NewsDan Haren won Thursday despite allowing three runs and 10 hits in five innings against the White Sox.
ImpactAt least Haren didn't give up any homers tonight. He got some help there from a nice breeze blowing in from center. He ended up striking out five and walking none. He's not the Dan Haren of old, but given that he's on such a good team and his tiny walk rate will result in a solid WHIP, no one should be thinking of dropping him in mixed leagues.
Haren rocked for six runs in loss to Reds | 04/05/2013 10:29 PM
NewsDan Haren was smoked for six runs on four home runs over four innings in a loss to the Reds on Friday night.
ImpactHaren's spring training struggles have now crossed over to the regular season. While the veteran right-hander has always given up his fair share of fly balls -- a poor fit in Great American Ball Park -- he appeared way too hittable in this one. It's going to be tough to trust him in standard mixed leagues until he proves that he's healthy.
Dan Haren gives up four homers | 03/26/2013 4:11 PM
NewsDan Haren was tagged for four homers and five runs in six innings by the Marlins on Tuesday.
ImpactIt's understandable that Haren gave up a pair of homers to Giancarlo Stanton. The shots from Chris Valaika and Chris Coghlan were less forgivable. Haren showed better velocity at the beginning of the spring than he has lately. With the way he's throwing now, there's a good chance he'll struggle in the early going.
Dan Haren gives up four runs in loss | 03/22/2013 12:09 AM
NewsDan Haren surrendered four runs in 5 1/3 innings Thursday in a loss to the Braves.
ImpactAlthough the results didn't show it, Haren said his he felt much better tonight than he did in his loss last Friday to the Cardinals. According to CSN Washington's Mark Zuckerman, Haren regularly worked at 89 mph tonight and touched 91 mph. It's still not ideal, but it's an improvement over last time out.
Dan Haren gives up five runs to Cards | 03/15/2013 3:46 PM
NewsDan Haren gave up five runs in five innings Friday in a loss to the Cardinals.
ImpactHaren didn't have much on his fastball today, and he said afterwards that he felt achy. Perhaps he's going through his dead-arm phase. Haren didn't seem very concerned afterwards, so we won't be either, unless he fails to bounce back next time out.
Dan Haren gives up two runs in loss | 03/10/2013 3:55 PM
NewsDan Haren was charged with two runs on five hits in four innings Sunday in a loss to the Tigers.
ImpactHaren was better than the line suggests; he didn't get much help from his defense in this one. He's had an encouraging spring, and it looks like the Nationals may have gotten a modest bargain when they signed him to a one-year, $13 million contract.
Dan Haren impresses in first side session | 02/15/2013 7:04 PM
NewsAccording to Nationals manager Davey Johnson, Dan Haren looked impressive during his first side session as a member of the Nationals on Friday.
ImpactJohnson noted that his stuff looked "really good" and that he had good command. Catcher Jhonatan Solano also gave him rave reviews, noting his ability to command the cutter while getting impressive movement on the pitch. Haren is coming off a highly disappointing and injury-riddled 2012 campaign, but could be poised for a big bounce-back effort in 2013.
