A nice step forward for Haren, who had failed to pitch more than five innings in his previous four starts. He gave up six hits (including a home run) while striking out five and walking none. Haren owes an assist to Denard Span, who robbed Joey Votto of extra bases with a leaping catch at the wall in the sixth inning. While it was an encouraging outing, we wouldn't trust him in fantasy leagues with a matchup against the homer-happy Braves next week. |

At least Haren didn't give up any homers tonight. He got some help there from a nice breeze blowing in from center. He ended up striking out five and walking none. He's not the Dan Haren of old, but given that he's on such a good team and his tiny walk rate will result in a solid WHIP, no one should be thinking of dropping him in mixed leagues. |

According to CSN Washington's Mark Zuckerman, Haren regularly worked at 89 mph tonight and touched 91 mph. It's still not ideal, but it's an improvement over last time out. |

Catcher Jhonatan Solano also gave him rave reviews, noting his ability to command the cutter while getting impressive movement on the pitch. Haren is coming off a highly disappointing and injury-riddled 2012 campaign, but could be poised for a big bounce-back effort in 2013. |
