|Assets:||Has good, sinking action on a fastball that can hit 93 m.p.h., as well as a great overhand curve, decent change-up and slider. Can dominate when on the bump and he's also a workhorse.|
|Flaws:||Doesn't always have great command of his breaking stuff, which gets him into trouble. Left-handed hitters do better against him than righties, in general. Injuries are a factor here.|
|Career Potential:||Excellent starter, when healthy.|

Wainwright to start Opening Day for Cardinals | 02/20/2014 10:26 AM
NewsAdam Wainwright will start for the Cardinals on Opening Day, March 31, against the Reds.
Joe Strauss on Twitter
ImpactIt was an obvious choice for Cardinals manager Mike Matheny. Wainwright finished second in the National League Cy Young Award voting last season after going 19-9 with a 2.94 ERA, 1.068 WHIP, and 219/35 K/BB ratio in 241 2/3 innings. He'll be a fantasy ace again in 2014.
Adam Wainwright gets second Gold Glove | 10/29/2013 9:04 PM
NewsAdam Wainwright has been named the 2013 National League Gold Glove winner at pitcher.
St. Louis Cardinals on Twitter
ImpactIt's the second Gold Glove for Wainwright, who also won in back in 2009. He beats out the Diamondbacks' Patrick Corbin and the Dodgers' Zack Greinke for the award.
Adam Wainwright whiffs 10 but loses again | 10/28/2013 11:30 PM
NewsAdam Wainwright recorded 10 strikeouts but suffered his second loss of the World Series Monday, allowing three runs over seven frames against the Red Sox.
ImpactWainwright hung an 0-2 curveball with one out in the first that Dustin Pedroia banged for a double, and David Ortiz pulled another double down the line on the next pitch. The back breaker came in the seventh, when David Ross plated the go-ahead run with a ground rule double and then Jacoby Ellsbury provided an insurance run with a two-out bloop single. Though he's pitched pretty well in two of the starts, Waino has lost each of his last three postseason outings.
Adam Wainwright won't start on short rest | 10/25/2013 4:09 PM
NewsAdam Wainwright will not start on short rest in Game 4, staying on schedule for a Game 5 start on Monday.
Bob Nightengale on Twitter
ImpactThe Cardinals didn't rule out bringing back Waino on short rest Sunday, but not that they've evened the series up, they know they won't be facing elimination in Game 4. Lance Lynn will get the ball on Sunday ahead of Wainwright.
Adam Wainwright among SP GG finalists | 10/25/2013 11:18 AM
NewsAdam Wainwright, Zack Greinke and Patrick Corbin have been named finalists for the National League Gold Glove award at pitcher.
Rawlings Sports on Twitter
ImpactWainwright won the award back in 2009, which probably makes him the favorite among the three. Greinke and Corbin will be seeking their first Gold Gloves. The winner will be announced next week.
Adam Wainwright could start on short rest | 10/24/2013 9:14 PM
NewsThe Cardinals have not ruled out starting Adam Wainwright in Game 4 on short rest.
ImpactIf it's not an elimination game, the Cards are likely to go with Lance Lynn, but they could bring back their ace on three days' rest if their backs are against the wall. Wainwright struggled in Game 1, allowing five runs over five innings of work. The right-hander has never pitched on short rest during his career.
Wainwright allows five early runs in G1 loss | 10/23/2013 11:29 PM
NewsAdam Wainwright allowed five runs, all of which came in the first two innings, over five innings of work in Wednesday's Game 1 loss to the Red Sox.
ImpactWainwright was done in by poor defense and some poorly placed pitches, as a walk, single and error loaded the bases before Mike Napoli blasted a bases-clearing double in the first inning. After two innings Wainwright rebounded to set down seven straight hitters, but the damage was already done. He finished with six hits and a walk allowed while striking out four.
Adam Wainwright to start World Series Game 1 | 10/20/2013 4:38 PM
NewsCardinals manager Mike Matheny officially announced Sunday that Adam Wainwright will start for the Cardinals in Game 1 of the World Series against the Red Sox on Wednesday.
Bob Nightengale on Twitter
ImpactThis certainly doesn't come as a surprise, as Wainwright is the ace of the Cardinals staff and will be more than fully rested, having last pitched in Game 3 of the NLDS against the Dodgers on Monday. Thus far in the postseason, Wainwright is 2-1 with a 1.57 ERA, 0.78 WHIP and 20/1 K/BB ratio over three starts (23 IP). Michael Wacha is expected to follow up in the Cardinals rotation.
Adam Wainwright pitches well in Game 3 loss | 10/14/2013 11:16 PM
NewsAdam Wainwright deserved better but was hung with a loss Monday, holding the Dodgers to two runs over seven frames as the Dodgers took Game 3.
ImpactA case could certainly be made that he shouldn't have given up any runs. Both runs Waino permitted came home in the fourth, an inning that began when Mark Ellis was credited with a double after Jon Jay failed to take charge in right center field. He then retired two of the next three hitters before Yasiel Puig knocked a triple to extend the Dodgers' lead to 2-0. Wainwright will get the ball again in Game 7 if the series gets that far.
Wainwright throws complete game in 6-1 win | 10/09/2013 11:08 PM
NewsAdam Wainwright threw an eight-hit complete game as the Cardinals topped the Pirates 6-1 in Wednesday's NLDS Game 5.
ImpactFor the series, Wainwright threw 16 innings, allowing two runs with a 0.75 WHIP over two starts. On Wednesday, Wainwright's only run allowed came on three consecutive hits that didn't leave the infield. It was Wainwright's fourth career playoff win but his first-ever complete game in postseason play. It was also his third-straight postseason start allowing one run, dating back to last season's NLCS against the Giants.
Adam Wainwright superb as Cards take Game 1 | 10/03/2013 8:36 PM
NewsAdam Wainwright limited the Pirates to one run on three hits and no walks over seven innings in Thursday's 9-1 win over the Pirates.
ImpactHe notched nine strikeouts. Wainwright left a fastball over the plate that Pedro Alvarez hit out in the fifth, but he was otherwise in total control, throwing nasty curveball after nasty curveball. The righty tossed 105 pitches over his seven frames before Carlos Martinez and Trevor Rosenthal mowed down the Bucs in the final two innings. Waino is in line to pitch again in Game 5, if necessary.
Wainwright stifles Cubs to earn 19th victory | 09/28/2013 8:54 PM
NewsAdam Wainwright stifled the Cubs offense in Saturday's victory, scattering just two hits and a walk over 5 1/3 scoreless innings.
ImpactWainwright recorded five strikeouts in the ballgame, which provided a nice tune-up heading into the postseason. The 32-year-old has completely reverted to pre-injury form this season, posting a stellar 19-9 record, 2.94 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 219/35 K/BB ratio over 241 2/3 innings. If not for the sheer dominance of Clayton Kershaw this season, Wainwright would garner serious consideration for the National League Cy Young award.
Adam Wainwright to start Saturday vs. Cubs | 09/27/2013 5:26 PM
NewsAdam Wainwright will start Saturday against the Cubs.
Derrick Goold on Twitter
ImpactThis will lineup him up to start Game 1 of the NLDS next Thursday. Wainwright is 18-9 with a 3.01 ERA this season.
Adam Wainwright picks up 18th victory | 09/23/2013 11:46 PM
NewsAdam Wainwright yielded three runs over seven innings for his 18th win Monday against the Nationals.
ImpactOddly enough, the Cardinals' victory put NL Central rivals Cincinnati and Pittsburgh into the postseason, as it knocked the Nationals out of contention. Wainwright is scheduled to start Sunday, but that will probably change at some point. His regular season might be over at 18-9 with a 3.01 ERA.
Wainwright only penciled in for Game 162 | 09/23/2013 8:27 AM
NewsAdam Wainwright is only penciled in to pitch Sunday in the Cardinals' regular-season finale.
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
ImpactIf the Cardinals can clinch the National League Central before Game 162, they'll likely rest Wainwright for Game 1 of the NLDS. So the ace right-hander could be making his final start of the 2013 regular season on Monday night against the Nationals. He is 17-9 with a 2.98 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 209/34 K/BB ratio in 229 1/3 frames this year.
Wainwright gives up one run in no-decision | 09/14/2013 12:14 AM
NewsAdam Wainwright fired eight innings of one-run ball Friday in a no-decision against the Mariners.
ImpactWainwright was very solid, allowing six hits and two walks while fanning six batters. However, a solo homer by Mike Zunino in the fifth inning was enough to cost him a chance at the victory. While Waino hit a bit of a rough patch around the end of August, he has followed that up with back-to-back excellent starts. The Cardinals will hope for another big start from their ace next week when he faces the Rockies at Coors Field.
Wainwright deals seven scoreless as Cards win | 09/07/2013 10:20 PM
NewsAdam Wainwright threw seven scoreless innings in the Cardinals' 5-0 win over the Pirates on Saturday.
ImpactReports of Wainwright's demise were greatly exaggerated. The right-hander struggled through two poor starts against the Reds his last two times out, but Wainwright allowed just two hits and two walks while striking out eight on Saturday. He looks to be just fine, and he's now 16-9 with a 3.03 ERA. He'll take on the Mariners in an interleague tilt on Friday.
Wainwright hammered again as Cardinals fall | 09/02/2013 3:41 PM
NewsAdam Wainwright was shelled for six earned runs in six innings Monday afternoon by the Reds.
ImpactIt was the second straight ugly outing for Wainwright, who has allowed 18 hits and 15 earned runs over his last eight innings. The right-hander is claiming to be healthy, but his fastball and cutter have been ineffective pitches of late and batters have been able to sit on his curveball. He'll look to bounce back next time out vs. Pittsburgh.
Wainwright throws CG for NL-leading 15th win | 08/23/2013 11:38 PM
NewsAdam Wainwright notched his NL-leading 15th victory Friday in a 3-1 complete game victory over the Braves.
ImpactIt was his major-league leading fifth complete game of the season. Wainwright scattered six hits (all of them singles) and no walks while striking out nine. He threw 128 pitches in the victory, which is the second-highest pitch total of his career. In any other year, he'd be right in the middle of the Cy Young conversation, but the Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw is on another planet right now. The Cardinals' ace will bring a 2.58 ERA into an important matchup against the Reds next week at home.
Wainwright punches out 11, allows only 1 run | 08/18/2013 7:14 PM
NewsAdam Wainwright struck out 11 and yielded just one run over seven innings in Sunday's victory against the Cubs.
ImpactHe scattered five hits and walked just one in improving to 14-7. Wainwright's 11 whiffs were the most he's had in an outing since striking out 12 Brewers in a complete game shutout back in April. The right-hander is first in the NL in wins, second in innings pitched (189 2/3), third in strikeouts (173), fifth in ERA (2.66) and sixth in WHIP (1.04). The Cardinals are getting their money's worth on Wainwright's $12 million salary in 2013.
Wainwright yields three runs in no-decision | 08/14/2013 1:18 AM
NewsAdam Wainwright allowed three earned runs in seven innings Tuesday in a no-decision against the Pirates.
ImpactThe Cardinals didn't wrap up the 4-3 victory until the bottom of the 14th inning. Wainwright struggled early and then settled in late, tossing a total of 122 pitches over his seven frames. The right-hander has a 2.71 ERA and 1.05 WHIP in 25 starts this season.
Wainwright decent against Pirates | 07/31/2013 11:03 PM
NewsAdam Wainwright was charged with four runs on eight hits and a walk over seven innings in Wednesday's loss to the Pirates.
ImpactHe struck out six. Wainwright wasn't super sharp, leaving some pitches up over the plate that led to single runs in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings. Though he hasn't blown up in any outings, Waino has now surrendered four earned runs in three of his last six starts. He'll try to bounce back next weekend at home against the Dodgers.
Wainwright goes seven innings in loss | 07/26/2013 10:37 PM
NewsAdam Wainwright allowed four runs (three earned) over seven innings in a loss to the Braves on Friday.
ImpactIt was his first loss since June 23. Wainwright gave up seven hits (including a solo homer by Jason Heyward) and one walk while fanning eight batters. His ERA sits at 2.51 through 22 starts this season. He'll look for win No. 14 when he faces the Pirates next week in an important NL Central showdown.
Wainwright fires eight innings of 2-run ball | 07/21/2013 6:24 PM
NewsAdam Wainwright fired eight innings of two-run ball Sunday in the Cardinals' victory over the Padres.
ImpactHe whiffed seven and dispatched two free passes before passing the game off to closer Edward Mujica, who replaced him in the All-Star game. Wainwright, who boasts a 2.44 ERA and 1.02 WHIP, is on pace to finish 22-8 and strike out 231 batters.
Wainwright gets no-decision on Sunday night | 07/14/2013 11:57 PM
NewsAdam Wainwright gave up four runs on eight hits over six innings in Sunday night's win over the Cubs.
ImpactHe allowed one walk and finished with four strikeouts. Wainwright was tagged for a three-run shot to Darwin Barney in the sixth inning, but the Cardinals were able to provide him with plenty of run support for the no-decision. It was just his fourth non-quality start of the season. Wainwright won't pitch in the All-Star game and has been officially replaced by Edward Mujica.
Wainwright dominates for seven as Cards win | 07/09/2013 11:47 PM
NewsAdam Wainwright fired seven innings of one-run ball Tuesday in the Cardinals' defeat of the Astros.
ImpactHouston's lineup had no chance. Wainwright yielded just one extra-base hit and one walk while striking out nine. He is 12-5 with a 2.30 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 126/14 K/BB ratio in 140 2/3 innings this season and should keep rolling next time out against the Cubs.

NewsThe Cardinals have changed their rotation so that Adam Wainwright will start twice before the All-Star break.
Derrick Goold on Twitter

Wainwright allows four runs in no-decision | 07/05/2013 12:17 AM
NewsAdam Wainwright allowed four runs in eight-plus innings in a no-decision against the Angels on Thursday.
ImpactWainwright was given a chance to finish off his fifth complete game of the season, but he was pulled in the bottom of the ninth inning after he allowed a leadoff single to Albert Pujols. Edward Mujica then gave up the lead on a two-run homer to Josh Hamilton and eventually took the loss. Wainwright scattered seven hits while walking just one batter and striking out three. His ERA went up from 2.22 to 2.36 in the no-decision. He'll hope for better luck next week in a favorable matchup against the Astros at home.
Wainwright hurls fourth CG, Cards top A's 7-1 | 06/29/2013 7:23 PM
NewsAdam Wainwright threw his fourth complete game of the season on Saturday, limiting the A's to one run as the Cardinals won 7-1.
ImpactWainwright actually had a three-hit gem going into the seventh inning before the A's pushed a run across, but he still finished with just five hits and two walks allowed while striking out eight. The right-hander moved to 11-5 with a 2.22 ERA and 0.99 WHIP on the year, and he'd be firmly in the running for the starting pitcher gig in the All-Star game were he not in the same league as Matt Harvey. Still, the Cardinals' ace is having another fantastic season.
Wainwright gets quality start on Sunday night | 06/24/2013 1:23 AM
NewsAdam Wainwright gave up two runs (one earned) over 6 2/3 innings on Sunday night against the Rangers.
ImpactHe allowed six hits, one walk, and finished with six strikeouts. Coming off his first loss since May 16, Wainwright was able to hold the Rangers to six scoreless innings before giving up his only runs. He was seeking his NL-best 11th victory, but was the victim of poor run support. Wainwright's next start will come on Saturday against the Athletics.
Adam Wainwright undone by one inning | 06/18/2013 11:11 PM
NewsAdam Wainwright was undone by a poor first inning Tuesday, allowing all four runs of his runs in a loss to the Cubs.
ImpactWaino retired the first two batters of the game before giving up four straight hits -- including back-to-back homers -- and four runs. He was pretty much spotless the rest of the way, shutting the Cubbies out for the next six frames, but by then it was too late. Despite the relatively disappointing showing in a juicy matchup, Wainwright still has a 2.37 ERA and 1.01 WHIP for the season. He gets the Rangers at home this weekend.
Wainwright notches MLB-leading 10th victory | 06/13/2013 4:40 PM
NewsAdam Wainwright notched his major-league leading 10th victory Thursday by tossing seven scoreless innings in a 2-1 win over the Mets.
ImpactWainwright had no problems with the weak-hitting Mets' lineup, giving up just four hits and a pair of walks while notching six strikeouts. The strong outing pulled his ERA down to 2.18 for the year. Meanwhile, his K/BB ratio sits at a ridiculous 97/7 K/BB ratio over 103 innings. He'll look for win No. 11 next time out in another favorable matchup, this time against the last-place Cubs.
Wainwright goes seven innings for ninth win | 06/07/2013 10:39 PM
NewsAdam Wainwright notched his ninth win over the season Friday by allowing two runs in seven innings as part of a 9-2 victory over the Reds.
ImpactHe's now tied with Arizona's Patrick Corbin for the NL-lead with nine victories. Wainwright scattered seven hits while walking one and fanning seven. He has allowed three runs or fewer in all but one of his starts this season and has yet to walk more than one batter in any of them. With a 2.34 ERA and a crazy 91/7 K/BB ratio, the Cardinals' ace is looking like one of the early favorites for the NL Cy Young award. He has a favorable matchup against the lowly Mets next week.
Adam Wainwright fans 10 in complete-game win | 06/01/2013 10:18 PM
NewsAdam Wainweight struck out 10 in his third complete game of the season as the Cardinals beat the Giants 7-1 in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader.

Adam Wainwright goes eight innings in win | 05/27/2013 6:10 PM
NewsAdam Wainwright pitched eight innings of three-run ball Monday as the Cardinals won in Kansas City.
ImpactWainwright allowed 12 hits, but as is typical for the Royals, there were no homers among them. In fact, just one, David Lough's double, went for extra bases. There were also no walks. Wainwright may not have been quite at his best today, but he didn't need to be. He's 7-3 with a 2.48 ERA.
Adam Wainwright goes 7 1/3 in victory | 05/22/2013 1:24 AM
NewsAdam Wainwright limited the Padres to one run and four hits in 7 1/3 innings to pick up his sixth win Tuesday.
ImpactWainwright had a 5.77 ERA on this day a year ago before finally turning around his season with a shutout of the Padres on May 22. This year, he's been on target since day one; he ranks in the top 10 in the NL in wins, ERA, WHIP and strikeouts.
Wainwright loses no-no, shuts out Rockies | 05/11/2013 5:13 PM
NewsAdam Wainwright lost a no-hit bid in the eighth inning Saturday, but settled for a two-hit shutout in a 3-0 victory over the Rockies.
ImpactIt was his sixth career shutout and his 12th complete game. Wainwright didn't give up his first hit until Nolan Arenado dumped a single into shallow left-center field with one out in the eighth inning. It snapped an 0-for-50 streak by Rockies' hitters if you include Shelby Miller's brilliant performance from Friday night. Wainwright struck out seven and walked one in the victory and holds a brilliant 2.30 ERA and 55/4 K/BB ratio in 58 2/3 innings over his first eight starts this season. He's looking like a Cy Young contender early on.
Wainwright allows five runs but Cards win | 05/04/2013 7:25 PM
NewsAdam Wainwright gave up five earned runs in 5 1/3 innings but the Cardinals beat the Brewers on Saturday.
ImpactIt was by far Wainwright's worst start of the season, but the St. Louis offense was relentless and ultimately bailed him out. The right-hander didn't walk a batter and struck out five, but he surrendered a whopping 11 hits. He should be better next week against the Rockies.
Wainwright dominates again, Cards top Nats | 04/23/2013 10:07 PM
NewsAdam Wainwright tossed 8 1/3 scoreless innings Tuesday as the Cardinals blanked the Nationals 2-0.
ImpactWainwright was locked in all evening, tallying nine strikeouts against one walk and five hits. He nearly tallied his second shutout of the season but Cardinals manager Mike Matheny opted to pull him at 113 pitches. Edward Mujica was able to close it out. Wainwright is now 4-1 with a 1.93 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 37/1 K/BB ratio in 37 1/3 innings this season.

The right-hander holds a 2.48 ERA and 1.07 WHIP on the young season, and he's yet to walk a batter while recording 28 strikeouts over 29 frames. Waino looks to be on track to returning to be one of the better pitchers in the NL again this season. He has a tough matchup against the Nationals on the road next week.

He now has a 2.05 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 24 strikeouts through 22 innings (three starts) this season. The 31-year-old right-hander has not walked a batter. It's a good thing the Cardinals locked him up when they did.
Wainwright solid in blowout win over Giants | 04/07/2013 7:35 PM
NewsAdam Wainwright allowed two runs over seven innings in Sunday's 14-3 win over the Giants.
ImpactWainwright gave up seven hits, but was in control throughout the game and finished with six strikeouts. NewsAdam Wainwright allowed four runs -- three earned -- on 11 hits over six innings in Monday's loss to the Diamondbacks.
ImpactHe struck out six and didn't walk anyone. Wainwright was cruising along until a comebacker in the third inning struck him in the pitching shoulder. Although he shooed the training staff away and insisted he was fine, his command wasn't nearly as good afterwards, and it resulted in a three-spot in the fourth and another run in the fifth. But, until we hear differently, Waino should be fine for his next start.

Jenifer Langosch on Twitter
ImpactIt was an obvious choice even before Chris Carpenter had a recurrence of his neck/shoulder issues. Wainwright took a while to get going in 2012 in his first year back from Tommy John surgery, but he was pretty much back to himself by the end of the season and should be a fantasy ace in 2013. The righty will face Ian Kennedy and the D'Backs on April 1.

ImpactNegotiations hit a lull at the start of spring training, but dialogue between the two sides is ongoing. While it would be ideal to get something done before the start of the season, Wainwright hasn't set an official deadline on talks. The 31-year-old right-hander is due to hit free agency following the 2013 season and reportedly seeks at least a five-year deal.

ImpactThe two sides were unable to get on the same page at the start of spring training, but both sides have expressed an eagerness at getting something done before Opening Day. Wainwright, who has not set a deadline for talks, is believed to be looking for at least a five-year deal, while the Cards would prefer a shorter pact with a higher average annual value. The 31-year-old is currently slated to hit free agency after the 2013 season.
Adam Wainwright gives up two homers in loss | 03/02/2013 5:08 PM
NewsAdam Wainwright was rocked by the Nationals on Saturday, giving up five runs -- four earned -- and eight hits in three innings.
ImpactAnthony Rendon homered in the second, and Chris Marrero took Wainwright deep in the third. Perhaps it had something to do with Wainwright working on his changeup today. He has a 6.35 ERA after two spring starts.
Adam Wainwright strikes out three in debut | 02/25/2013 5:39 PM
NewsAdam Wainwright scattered four hits over 2 2/3 scoreless innings Monday in his start against the Astros.
ImpactHe struck out three. Wainwright had a fantastic spring last year in his return from Tommy John surgery, only to stumble in April. It doesn't seem likely that it's the start of a trend.
Cards still talking long-term deal with Waino | 02/18/2013 10:48 AM
NewsAccording to Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, "conversations continue to occur" between the Cardinals front office and right-hander Adam Wainwright.
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
ImpactBoth sides indicated last week that there was a stall in the negotiations, but that's apparently not the case. Strauss notes that there was a similar "pause" last spring before the Cardinals announced a five-year, $75 million contract extension with Yadier Molina. Wainwright is hoping to have some kind of resolution by Opening Day.
Cards, Wainwright put contract talks on hold | 02/13/2013 4:54 PM
NewsAccording to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals and Adam Wainwright have put extension talks on hold.
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
ImpactThe two sides have had preliminary talks within the past week, but they haven't made much progress. However, Wainwright hasn't set a deadline and is optimistic that something could still get done. "It doesn't mean that it's over," said Wainwright. "The doors are still open. It just didn't work out right now. . All that means is we couldn't come to a number that worked for both sides as of yet." The 31-year-old right-hander is currently due to become a free agent following the 2013 season and will likely want a contract rivaling Matt Cain's five-year, $112.5 million deal with the Giants.
Cards, Wainwright have had 'casual' talks | 02/08/2013 11:02 AM
NewsDerrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the Cardinals and Adam Wainwright's agent, Steve Hammond, have had "casual" but ongoing extension talks.
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
ImpactThe talks are expected to intensify once spring training officially gets underway. Wainwright has not set a deadline for the talks, but both sides have expressed an eagerness to get something done, so it would be a surprise if negotiations dragged into the season. The right-hander is currently slated to hit free agency after the 2013 season.
Adam Wainwright extension talks 'open-ended' | 01/20/2013 2:26 PM
NewsCardinals general manager John Mozeliak said Adam Wainwright's agent, Steve Hammond, has not informed him of a deadline regarding extension talks with his client.
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
Impact"It's a little more open-ended," Mozeliak said. "It doesn't look like we've had any dialogue to this point (with) any lines drawn in the sand. We'll see the next four weeks and see where we go." The two sides engaged in preliminary extension talks towards the end of the 2012 season, but Wainwright decided to table them because he didn't want it to be a distraction. He did say, though, that he "liked where it was headed." The 32-year-old seems likely to seek a deal in the range of Matt Cain's five-year, $112.5 million contract.
Wainwright cut off extension talks in 2012 | 01/19/2013 8:00 PM
NewsAdam Wainwright and his agent Steve Hammond engaged the Cardinals in talks regarding a contract extension during the 2012 season, but but them off to avoid any possible distractions.
BJ Rains on Twitter
ImpactBoth sides have expressed an interest in working out an extension before Wainwright hits free agency after the 2013 season. He'll undoubtedly be seeking a comparable deal to Zack Greinke or Matt Cain's deal, and the Cardinals would be wise to oblige to keep the talented right-hander in town.
