ImpactThe deal was agreed to at the beginning of December and then made official Friday after Morneau passed his pre-signing physical. ImpactQuite a day for Morneau. While he was 8-for-11 with the bases loaded this season, the slam was his first since July 20, 2009. It was also his first five-RBI game since that day. It was his second two-homer game of the year. With the way he's performed of late, he could be a pretty attractive piece for a contender if the Twins want to give him up.
Morneau hits 11th home run in win over Royals | 08/07/2013 12:50 AM
NewsJustin Morneau went 1-for-4 with a home run against the Royals on Tuesday.
ImpactMorneau hit a two-run home run in the first inning for his only hit of the night. It was his fourth home run since July 27, and the first baseman is now batting .265/.323/.413 through 104 games. He's a long shot to reach the 19 homers he hit in 2012, but the recent power surge is still nice to see.
Morneau goes 2-for-4 with a two-run homer | 08/04/2013 8:15 PM
NewsJustin Morneau went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in Sunday's 3-2 victory against the Astros.
ImpactMorneau has recorded three multi-hit games during his current five-game hitting streak. During that stretch, he's smacked four extra-base hits, including two homers. The big first baseman finally looks comfortable after playing this season under constant speculation that he'd be traded. Of course, Minnesota couldn't find a deal for him prior to Wednesday's deadline. If Morneau keeps mashing like this -- he's 7-for-17 (.412) with two doubles, two homers and four RBI over four August games -- Minnesota may be able to find a taker for their long-time star via a waiver trade this month.
Morneau homers, doubles in loss to Royals | 08/01/2013 4:13 PM
NewsJustin Morneau went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and a double in Thursday's loss to the Royals.
ImpactComing into play Thursday, Morneau had just one home run and two doubles over 12 games since the All-Star break. The Twins failed to find a trade for him before Wednesday's deadline, but there's still a chance he could be moved this month. With his salary, he shouldn't have any issue passing through waivers.
Twins keep Morneau past Trade Deadline | 07/31/2013 4:20 PM
NewsThe Twins decided to hold onto Justin Morneau through the Trade Deadline.
ImpactMinnesota would have loved to cash Morneau in for a prospect, but apparently a deal wasn't there for the taking. Morneau seems like a prime candidate to be involved in an August trade, but he'll need to pass through waivers unclaimed. The first baseman will be a free agent in the winter.
Report: Morneau trade seeming less likely | 07/31/2013 1:10 PM
NewsA Justin Morneau trade may happen in August, if it happens at all, reports the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
St. Paul Pioneer Press
Impact"I think he's going to stay in Minnesota the rest of the year," said a talent evaluator from a team interested in Morneau's availability. According to the report, Baltimore has cooled on the first baseman, Texas would prefer to wait until next month, when they have a better idea of Lance Berkman's health, and Pittsburgh is currently pursuing other targets more urgently. "You can make a deal in August; there will be a lot of deals in August," Twins general manager Terry Ryan said Tuesday. "It's easier to make a deal now. A meaningful deal is a little more difficult (in August)." Morneau would have to clear waivers in August in order for the Twins to shop him without restrictions.
Report: O's, Bucs, 'mystery teams' on Morneau | 07/31/2013 12:39 PM
NewsAccording to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman, the Orioles, Pirates and "one or two mystery teams" are pursuing Twins first baseman Justin Morneau.
ImpactIt's not officially baseball's version of Christmas -- Deadline Day -- until Heyman begins throwing around the term "mystery team." Heyman mentions that the Rangers and Yankees are ostensibly potential landing spots for Morneau, but Texas prefers a right-handed bat and New York is fine rolling with Lyle Overbay for now.
Orioles not expected to acquire Morneau | 07/31/2013 12:00 PM
NewsDan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun reports that "nothing has heated up" regarding the Orioles' interest in Twins' first baseman Justin Morneau.
Dan Connolly on Twitter
ImpactJim Bowden of ESPN.com and MLB Network Radio on Sirius XM reported earlier Wednesday that the Orioles remain engaged on Morneau, but Connolly is hearing that the idea hasn't picked up much steam. His remaining salary and lack of production this season are likely big reasons why.
Orioles still engaged on Morneau, Norris | 07/31/2013 11:31 AM
NewsJim Bowden of ESPN.com and MLB Network Radio on Sirius XM reports that the Orioles "remain engaged" on Twins' first baseman Justin Morneau.
Jim Bowden on Twitter
ImpactWhile Morneau doesn't pack the punch he once did, the Orioles are on the lookout for ways to improve their DH spot. It probably wouldn't take much to pry him away from the Twins, who would be better served to give at-bats to younger players. Bowden also hears that the Orioles are still in the mix for Astros' right-hander Bud Norris.
Orioles have talked to Twins about Morneau | 07/28/2013 9:41 AM
NewsDan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun reports that the Orioles have had preliminary discussions with the Twins regarding a trade for Justin Morneau.
ImpactThe Orioles were scouting Morneau on Saturday when he doubled and homered against the Mariners. Connolly speculates that the O's could have also been looking at Raul Ibanez and/or Kendrys Morales as they seek some help in the DH spot. Morneau is making $14 million and batting just .267/.327/.401 with eight homers and 53 RBI this season, so it shouldn't take much to get him.
Morneau hits eighth home run, Twins top M's | 07/27/2013 7:33 PM
NewsJustin Morneau hit his eighth home run of the season Saturday in the Twins' defeat of the Mariners.
ImpactMorneau also tallied his 25th double, finishing the game 2-for-4. He hasn't hit for much power this year but a new home park could certainly help change that and his name has been mentioned in trade rumors in recent weeks.
Pirates interested in Justin Morneau | 07/21/2013 10:23 AM
NewsRob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that the Pirates "have some interest" in Justin Morneau.
ImpactCBS Sports' Jon Heyman reported Thursday that the market for Morneau was soft, but it appears that the Pirates are at least keeping tabs on him. Acquiring Morneau would mean Garrett Jones would spend more time in right field. Morneau is making $14 million this season before becoming a free agent this winter.
Justin Morneau failing to draw much interest | 07/18/2013 7:40 PM
NewsCBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that teams that would seem to be fits for a trade for Justin Morneau "sound cool to the idea so far."
ImpactHe lists the Orioles, Yankees and Rangers as fits for Morneau, but writes that there's "little evidence" those teams are interested at this point. Even though there is a "soft market" for Morneau, Heyman still believes the first baseman will ultimately be dealt. Morneau has managed to stay healthy this season but it hitting just .273/.331/.406 with seven homers.
Twins decline extension talks with Morneau | 07/14/2013 6:34 PM
NewsThe St. Paul Pioneer Press reports the Twins have refused to discuss a contract extension with Justin Morneau until after the trade deadline.
St. Paul Pioneer Press
Impact"We asked," Morneau said. "They said they're not going to do anything about an extension before the deadline or anything like that. That's not an option." Morneau, 32, is in the final year of his contract and batting .272/.331/.404 with seven home runs and 52 RBI going into the All-Star break. He can block a trade to six teams, but remains a candidate to be traded later this month.
Morneau goes 3-for-5 with double, RBI in win | 07/14/2013 6:25 PM
NewsJustin Morneau went 3-for-5 with a double, RBI and run scored Sunday in a win against the Yankees.
ImpactMorneau entered the game batting a sickly .116/.240/.326 in July, so the multi-hit game was good to see. The veteran first baseman finishes a disappointing first half batting .273 to go with just seven homers and 52 RBI.
Morneau off to 4-for-36 (.111) start in July | 07/12/2013 9:32 PM
NewsJustin Morneau is off to a 4-for-36 (.111) start in July.
ImpactThe good news for Morneau owners is that the first baseman has hit four homers since the last day of June. The bad news is Morneau clubbed only three home runs prior to that and his batting average has sunk to .272. Morneau is on pace to finish with 13 homers and 92 RBI.

NewsJustin Morneau clubbed a pair of solo homers in Thursday's loss to the Yankees.
ImpactIt was his 19th career multi-homer game and his first since last September 9. After hitting just three home runs over his first 72 games this season, Morneau has three in his last five games. He's heating up just in time for the trade deadline.

Morneau homers for first time since April 28 | 06/19/2013 11:24 PM
NewsJustin Morneau finally hit his third home run of the year Wednesday in the Twins' 7-4 win over the White Sox.
ImpactMorneau hadn't gone deep since April 28. He owns a decent .289 batting average in 64 games this season and has been effective with runners in scoring position, but the power has completely vanished. It may be a struggle for him to reach a double-digit home run total.
Morneau pokes a two-run double off Cliff Lee | 06/14/2013 12:17 AM
NewsJustin Morneau hit a two-run double off Cliff Lee in Minnesota's 3-2 loss Thursday.
ImpactThe Canadian's drive put the Twins ahead 2-1 in the seventh, but Minnesota's bullpen blew the lead in the top of the eighth. Morneau's power has evaporated -- he has just two home runs on the year -- but he's hitting .293 with 36 RBI through 225 at-bats.
Morneau delivers two RBI, Twins top Phillies | 06/11/2013 10:52 PM
NewsJustin Morneau went 3-for-4 with two RBI, including the game-winner, in the Twins' 3-2 win over the Phillies on Tuesday.
ImpactAfter doubling in a run in the fourth inning, Morneau provided what proved to be the game-winning RBI single in the eighth to give the Twins the lead. The power still isn't there -- Morneau has just two home runs on the year -- but the first baseman is now hitting .297 with a .351 on-base percentage and, more importantly, seems completely healthy for the first time in a long time.
Morneau has two hits in return to action | 06/05/2013 8:18 AM
NewsJustin Morneau (illness) went 2-for-5 in his return to action Tuesday.
ImpactMorneau missed the last two days with flu-like symptoms, but was able to return to his customary cleanup spot in the lineup. He has just two home runs on the year and is now batting .250 (3-for-12) over his last seven games.

Morneau reaches base three times in victory | 05/28/2013 4:53 AM
NewsJustin Morneau went 1-for-3 with a pair of walks and an RBI in Minnesota's Memorial Day victory over the Brewers.
ImpactAfter a few uninspiring years and a poor opening month (.253/.309/.379), Morneau was being dropped in a smattering of mixed leagues. He's been an on-base monster in May, posting a superb .340/.381/.420 slash line over 100 at-bats. Amazingly, Morneau has 22 RBI this month without a single home run. The former top slugger hasn't parked a ball since April 28. Hitting behind Joe Mauer and Josh Willingham will provide the Canadian with plenty of run-driving opportunities, but owners are going to have to cross their fingers and hope the big left-hander rediscovers his power stroke. Keep in mind that Morneau hasn't hit 20 dingers in a season since 2009.
Justin Morneau knocks in four runs in win | 05/13/2013 11:47 PM
NewsJustin Morneau drove in four runs with three hits, two of them doubles, Monday against the White Sox.
ImpactIncredibly, Morneau has driven in 17 runs in 12 games this month without the benefit of a single home run. He has just two long balls in 134 at-bats on the season, but since he's hitting well with runners on, he's the Twins' leader with 28 RBI.
Morneau has three RBI in Twins' defeat of Sox | 05/09/2013 11:44 AM
NewsJustin Morneau went 2-for-4 with three RBI in the Twins' win over the Red Sox on Wednesday night.

Morneau delivers game-winning single Saturday | 04/06/2013 10:39 PM
NewsJustin Morneau went 3-for-5 including the game-winning single in the Twins' 6-5 win over the Orioles on Saturday.
ImpactMorneau, 31, is hitting .389 on the young season, and his single with two runners on in the ninth inning broke a 5-5 tie. After dealing with injuries the two seasons prior, Morneau played 134 games last year. After knocking the rust off, Morneau's numbers should improve this season. He'll likely never again be the MVP-caliber hitter he was in his mid-20s, but he can still be a plenty useful first baseman in deep mixed leagues.
Justin Morneau scratched with back ailment | 03/28/2013 6:39 PM
NewsJustin Morneau was scratched from Thursday's lineup with mild back tightness.

Morneau hasn't been approached about ext. | 02/15/2013 11:56 AM
NewsJustin Morneau said Friday that the Twins have not approached him about a contract extension.
Rhett Bollinger on Twitter
ImpactMorneau indicated that he didn't want to talk about his contract during the season because it would be a distraction. It's certainly no surprise that the Twins aren't anxious to discuss an extension with Morneau at this point, as he's struggled to stay healthy and productive the last two seasons. He enters 2013 feeling great physically, though, and could be in line for a bounce-back season.
Morneau cautiously optimistic about health | 01/26/2013 5:59 PM
NewsTwins slugger Justin Morneau feels strong, but is being cautiously optimistic about his health as spring training approaches.
ImpactMorneau wanted to avoid all of the cliches typically spouted around this time of the offseason, such as being in the best shape of his life, but said he's been able to have a normal and healthy offseason for the first time in years. He's also completely over the concussion symptoms that have plagued him since 2010.
