Phillips 0-for-4 against the Rockies | 03/12/2014 7:03 PM
NewsBrandon Phillips went 0-for-4 as the Reds fell to the Rockies 3-2 on Wednesday.
ImpactPhillips is hitting a cold .167 in the Cactus League. He hasn't had a hit since March 7. His offensive numbers have been in freefall since 2011, as his OPS has gone from .810 to .706. Second base bats aren't as scarce as they once were, so Phillips can comfortably be skipped over for cheaper options later in drafts.
Phillips' spring struggles continue | 03/11/2014 6:10 PM
NewsBrandon Phillips went 0-for-2 with a walk on Tuesday against the Giants.
ImpactPhillips recently criticized the media for suggesting he is declining. However, he is coming off of a season in which he slashed .261/.310/.396. After Tuesday's outing, his spring average fell to .200 in 20 Cactus League at-bats. As Phillips himself noted, though, he was hit on the wrist last season, which affected his swing. That said, it's hard to be optimistic about his production at 32 years old.
Yanks among teams on Phillips' no-trade list | 12/11/2013 11:57 PM
NewsThe Yankees are one of the teams on Brandon Phillips' no-trade list, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.
Ken Rosenthal on Twitter
ImpactThat explains why Phillips was rumored to have asked for more money in any potential deal to the Yankees. Phillips still has four years and $50 million left on his deal, and it's unclear how much more he might ask for to waive the limited no-trade clause. It may be just one of many reasons the Reds end up holding onto the 32-year-old.
Yankees turned down Gardner-for-Phillips swap | 12/11/2013 10:23 PM
NewsThe Yankees rejected a Brandon Phillips-for-Brett Gardner trade offer from the Reds, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports.
Jon Heyman on Twitter
ImpactThe Yanks are in the market for a second baseman, but they're on the record as being in no hurry to deal Gardner. The Reds have been hot and cold on dealing their 32-year-old second baseman, but Ken Rosenthal recently reported the team isn't ruling it out. They've been said to have interest in the Yankees' center fielder, but the two sides have yet to match up on a deal.
Reds aren't ruling out Brandon Phillips trade | 12/11/2013 10:38 AM
NewsKen Rosenthal of FOX Sports says the Reds are no longer "ruling out" a Brandon Phillips trade.
Ken Rosenthal on Twitter
ImpactThe Reds stated earlier this month that Phillips would not be dealt, but conversations at this week's Winter Meetings in Orlando, Florida have obviously changed that tune. Phillips would make sense for the Yankees, who need to replace Robinson Cano, but Rosenthal is hearing that there are no active discussions between New York and Cincinnati at this time. The 32-year-old second baseman had 100 RBI in 2013 but a brutal .706 OPS.
Rosenthal: Reds unlikely to trade 2B Phillips | 12/03/2013 11:12 PM
NewsFOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Reds are unlikely to trade Brandon Phillips.
Ken Rosenthal on Twitter
ImpactIt flies in the face of reports over the last month from Yahoo! Sports' Jeff Passan and Jim Bowden of ESPN and SiriusXM, both of which claimed that Phillips was as good as gone. It's unclear whether the market for Phillips wasn't what the Reds hoped or if they simply just had a change of heart. The 32-year-old drove in 100 runs in 2013 but had his worst OPS (.706) ever as a Red.
Reds expected to trade Phillips by next week | 12/03/2013 4:32 PM
NewsJim Bowden of ESPN and SiriusXM is hearing from sources that the Reds will trade Brandon Phillips by the end of next week's Winter Meetings in Orlando.
Jim Bowden on Twitter
ImpactThe writing has been on the wall since the end of the season and Phillips was recently left off the player appearances schedule for the annual Redsfest in Cincinnati. Phillips posted a weak .706 OPS in 2013 and is owed $50 million over the next four seasons, but the 32-year-old is still an elite defensive second baseman and the Reds should be able to find a suitor for him as the hot stove heats up.
Report: Phillips assured of being dealt | 11/06/2013 1:44 PM
NewsA baseball executive told Yahoo! Sports' Jeff Passan on Tuesday that Brandon Phillips is assured of being traded this offseason.
Impact"He's gone," was the exact quote. This presumption has been widely reported since the Reds' season concluded. Phillips, who is owed $50 million over the next four years, was named the 2013 National League Gold Glove winner at second base last week. Phillips had a .706 OPS in 2013, the lowest mark he'd ever posted as a Red, but John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer reported last month that the main reason Cincy wants to deal him is because the outspoken Phillips has ruffled some feathers in the organization. The Yankees and Braves are known to have interest, though New York's desire will cease if Robinson Cano is re-signed, and Atlanta won't work out a deal unless Dan Uggla's last two contract years are first unloaded.
Yanks have talked to Reds about B. Phillips | 11/05/2013 5:00 PM
NewsAccording to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman, the Yankees have "checked in" with the Reds about Brandon Phillips.
ImpactThe Yankees are clearly lining up options in case Robinson Cano departs via free agency and have contacted free agent second baseman Omar Infante as well. Heyman says the intial asking price on Phillips is "way too steep" at the moment for the Yankees. But that could change.
Brandon Phillips wins another Gold Glove | 10/29/2013 8:34 PM
NewsBrandon Phillips has been named the 2013 National League Gold Glove winner at second base.

ImpactHe recaptures the award from the Cubs' Darwin Barney, who broke Phillips' two-year streak last season. Phillips' range isn't what it used to be, but he still makes plenty of highlight-reel plays. He beat out Barney and the Dodgers' Mark Ellis.
Braves may be interested in Brandon Phillips | 10/19/2013 11:11 AM
NewsDavid O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that the Braves may be interested in acquiring Brandon Phillips from the Reds provided that they take Dan Uggla as part of the deal.
David O'Brien on Twitter
ImpactThe Braves would also likely have to include a prospect or two to sweeten the deal. Uggla still has two years and $26 million remaining on his deal with the Braves, while Phillips is still owed $50 million over the next four years.
Reds have 'all intents' to trade 2B Phillips | 10/18/2013 4:23 PM
NewsUSA Today's Bob Nightengale reports that the Reds decided a month ago that they will shop Brandon Phillips this winter with "all intents to trade him."
Bob Nightengale on Twitter
ImpactThe report comes on the heels of one from John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer that stated the club could be interested in moving the second baseman. Phillips had a .706 OPS in 2013, which was his lowest ever as a Red, but Fay indicated that the main reason they'd want to deal him is because he's ruffled some feathers in the organization. The second baseman has four years and $50 million left on his contract.
Reds could be interested in trading Phillips | 10/18/2013 10:49 AM
NewsJohn Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that the Reds could try to trade Brandon Phillips this offseason.
ImpactFay notes that the club's interest in Cuban infielder Alexander Guerrero "is the strongest indication" that the club will try to deal Phillips. He also notes that Phillips "ticked off a lot of people in the organization with his behavior this year," in particular when he called owner Bob Castellini a liar in a Cincinnati Magazine article. Phillips' .706 OPS in 2013 was his lowest ever for a full season and he has four years and $50 million left on his deal, so he might not be that easy to move.
Phillips (shin) in lineup for Wild Card game | 10/01/2013 2:39 PM
NewsBrandon Phillips (shin) is in the lineup for Tuesday's Wild Card game against the Pirates.
C. Trent Rosecrans on Twitter
ImpactPhillips left Saturday's game with a bruised shin and sat out Sunday, but the injury isn't enough to keep him out of the lineup with the team's season on the line. Shin Soo Choo will bat leadoff in the do-or-die game and will be followed by Ryan Ludwick, Joey Votto, Phillips, Jay Bruce, Todd Frazier, Zack Cozart, Ryan Hanigan, and Johnny Cueto. Francisco Liriano will start for Pittsburgh.

NewsBrandon Phillips is being considered day-to-day with a bruised shin after X-rays came back negative on Saturday.
C. Trent Rosencrans on Twitter
ImpactPhillips departed from Saturday's game after fouling a ball off his shin, and went for X-rays as a precautionary measure to rule out any serious injury. It's unlikely that he'll return to the lineup on Sunday, as the Reds are likely to prefer that he rest for Tuesday's wild card game.

Brandon Phillips exits with bruised quad | 09/05/2013 9:45 PM
NewsBrandon Phillips left Thursday's game against the Cardinals with a bruised left quad.
ImpactPhillips was injured on a takeout slide by Matt Holliday in the sixth inning and was noticeably gimpy for a couple innings before being removed. The Reds are calling his exit precautionary, and he should be ready to play Friday.
Phillips doubles, triples and homers vs. Rox | 08/31/2013 11:44 PM
NewsBrandon Phillips finished a single short of the cycle in Saturday's 8-3 win over the Rockies.
ImpactPhillips hit an RBI triple in the top of the second inning, a solo homer in the top of the third and a double in the top of the fifth. He struck out in his fourth at-bat and grounded out in his fifth at-bat. Phillips has a career-high 99 RBI in 127 games this season.
Brandon Phillips drives in two runs Friday | 08/31/2013 12:13 AM
NewsBrandon Phillips went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored Friday against the Rockies.
ImpactIn the No. 2 spot for the second straight game, Phillips delivered a two-run single in the ninth inning. The 32-year-old will see fewer RBI chances if he sticks there, but he's now just one away from his career-high of 98 from 2009. Only Paul Goldschmidt has more RBI in the National League.
Phillips swats 16th homer in losing effort | 08/23/2013 10:35 PM
NewsBrandon Phillips swatted his 16th home run of the season on Friday, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Brewers.
ImpactPhillips finished the night 2-for-4 and also scored a pair of runs. His solo shot off Yovani Gallardo in the sixth inning knotted the score at 3-3, but that would be the extent of the Reds' offense. He's enjoying another solid season in the middle of the Reds lineup, hitting .266/.314/.412 with 16 homers and 95 RBI.
Brandon Phillips goes 3-for-4 in victory | 08/19/2013 11:02 PM
NewsBrandon Phillips went 3-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored in the Reds' 5-3 win over the Diamondbacks on Monday.
ImpactNo runs batted in tonight, yet Phillips had a nice game anyway. He scored multiple runs for the first time since July 24 and just the third time since June 1. Much of that has to do with the struggles of the guys in the 6-8 spots in the Reds lineup, but the other part of it is his poor OBP of late.
Phillips has 3 hits, Reds win 6-4 over Cubs | 08/14/2013 1:47 AM
NewsBrandon Phillips went 3-for-6 with two stolen bases in the Reds' 6-4, 11-inning win over the Cubs on Tuesday.
ImpactPhillips collected three singles, driving in his 90th run of the year with the first of his three hits. The stolen bases were a bit more of a surprise from the 32-year-old -- he'd stolen just two bases all season coming into the game. The second baseman was the only Reds player to collect more than one hit in the game.
Brandon Phillips hits 13th homer | 07/31/2013 7:07 PM
NewsBrandon Phillips went 3-for-5 and hit his 13th homer Wednesday against the Padres.
ImpactIt's the first three-hit game for Phillips since way back on April 28. He's still hit just .226 with three homers in 186 at-bats since the beginning of June, though he's driven in 38 runs during the span anyway.

NewsBrandon Phillips singled twice and knocked in three runs versus the Brewers on Wednesday.
ImpactPhillips' average and power production have really slipped, but he's still driving in runs at a good rate. Since the beginning of June, he has 23 RBI in 30 games, even though he's batting just .217 with three homers and no doubles.
Phillips hits two-run homer, Reds beat Giants | 07/02/2013 10:19 PM
NewsBrandon Phillips hit a two-run homer as the Reds no-hit the Giants in a 3-0 win on Tuesday.
ImpactPhillips' two-run blast in the sixth inning gave starter Homer Bailey some breathing room, as he took Tim Lincecum deep for his 12th homer of the year. The second baseman has hits in each of his five games since returning from paternity leave, and the homer was his first since June 23. He's also the leading vote-getter among second basemen in NL All-Star Game voting. It's been a good first half for Phillips.
Brandon Phillips getting close to 100 percent | 07/01/2013 6:12 PM
NewsBrandon Phillips admitted Monday that he played hurt in June but is finally "getting closer to 100 percent."
ImpactPhillips was hit on the left forearm by a pitch on June 1. He missed four games and evidently was still hurting for weeks after that, as he wound up batting just .193/.247/.265 in June. "I feel better," Phillips said Monday. "The bat doesn't feel heavy in my hand. I'm not the type of person to make excuses, but I was really hurting."

Phillips hits walk-off as Reds best Pirates | 06/20/2013 12:21 AM
NewsBrandon Phillips hit a walk-off single in the 13th inning to give the Reds a 2-1 win over the Pirates on Wednesday.
ImpactPhillips has struggled of late, as he's just 12-for-59 (.203) in June, and he was struggling again on Wednesday before the single in the 13th inning. The slump has dropped his average on the season to .272. Maybe Wednesday's heroics will ignite his bat once again.
Brandon Phillips knocks in six in Reds' win | 06/10/2013 11:58 PM
NewsBrandon Phillips hit his fifth career grand slam and ended up driving in all six runs as the Reds beat the Cubs 6-2 on Monday.
ImpactPhillips also had an RBI single and an RBI groundout. He's now up to 52 RBI this season, putting him two-thirds of the way to his 2012 total of 77 and more than halfway to his career high of 98 RBI from 2009. It's too bad for his fantasy owners that he's not stealing bases like he used to -- he's just 1-for-3 on the year -- but they can hardly complain when he's hitting for power like this.

Brandon Phillips has problems fielding | 06/04/2013 9:27 PM
NewsBrandon Phillips isn't having issues hitting, but fielding leaves his left forearm sore.
Impact"I felt good swinging," said Phillips. "The more I kept on swinging, the more it kept it loose. It felt good, so that's why I'm going to do some more treatment right now, just keep it hot, keep it moving. ... But other than that, catching a ground ball was not my friend. It wasn't fun." Phillips will likely be held out until the start of the Cardinals series this weekend.

You know how Dusty (Baker) is. He'll want to make sure I'm OK. We still got a lot of games left. I'm not looking forward to sitting on the bench tomorrow. Hopefully, I'll be back in Monday." Cesar Izturis will likely start Sunday in Phillips' place.

He's currently tied with Chris Davis and John Buck for the major league lead with 20 RBI. With Shin-Soo Choo and Joey Votto setting the table, a 100-RBI season can't be ruled out.

NewsBrandon Phillips will take over the cleanup spot for the Reds following Ryan Ludwick's shoulder injury.
Bob Nightengale on Twitter
ImpactPhillips batted second in Monday's season opener, but Reds manager Dusty Baker already has to make some adjustments now that Ludwick is expected to be sidelined until July. It's not clear who will replace him in the No. 2 spot, but Zack Cozart is the most likely candidate. While it's probably a mistake to keep Cozart that high in the order, at least Phillips is in an excellent position to drive in runs behind Joey Votto.
