NewsBlue Jays third baseman Juan Francisco isn't in the lineup Friday against the White Sox.
ImpactFrancisco has two hits in his last 35 at-bats, a .057 average. He's going to play a lot less frequently now that Adam Lind and Edwin Encarnacion are both healthy.

NewsBlue Jays third baseman Juan Francisco smacked his 16th homer of the season Sunday against the Yankees.

Blue Jays third baseman Juan Francisco is not in the lineup Saturday against the Yankees. | 07/26/2014 11:48 AM
NewsBlue Jays third baseman Juan Francisco is not in the lineup Saturday against the Yankees.
ImpactJust a routine day off. Francisco's hot May (.284, 7 HR, 20 RBI, 1.013 OPS) is a distant memory, but he's been a respectable 3B fantasy option for most of the season.
Francisco smacks two-run homer vs. Orioles | 06/13/2014 10:30 PM
NewsJuan Francisco clubbed a two-run homer in a win over the Orioles on Friday night.
ImpactIt was his 11th home run of the season. Francisco has predictably come back down to Earth since his hot start, but he remains a useful power option in fantasy leagues against right-handed pitching.
Francisco clubs two-run homer in win | 06/05/2014 4:21 PM
NewsJuan Francisco clubbed a two-run homer in Thursday's 7-3 win over the Tigers.
ImpactFrancisco has predictably dropped off from a batting average perspective over the past couple of weeks, but the power has remained a constant. The 26-year-old has hit 10 home runs in just 123 at-bats and owns a .593 slugging percentage and a .943 OPS. He's a must-start when a right-hander is on the hill.
Juan Francisco knocks in four for Jays | 05/31/2014 4:19 PM
NewsJuan Francisco had three hits, including two doubles, and four RBI against the Royals on Saturday.
ImpactFrancisco had lost some playing time of late and entered today's game in a 1-for-16 slump since May 19. But that is Juan Francisco. The power will stick around, but between his streakiness and his defensive limitations, he's not always an easy guy to fit on a major league roster. He's probably not going to be worth playing in mixed leagues again until someone ahead of him gets hurt.
Francisco hits one of Jays' 3 homers vs. Rays | 05/27/2014 10:13 PM
NewsJuan Francisco went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's win over the Rays.
ImpactFrancisco went deep off of Josh Lueke in the seventh inning for his ninth home run of the season. He was one of three Jays who went deep, helping extend the Jays' streak of games with a home run to ten. Francisco is slashing an impressive .276/.368/.612 with 20 RBI in only 114 plate appearances.
Juan Francisco hits eighth homer | 05/18/2014 6:44 PM
NewsJuan Francisco hit his eighth homer as part of a 2-for-4 day on Sunday, but he also committed two errors in a loss to the Rangers.
ImpactThe Blue Jays have to keep Francisco's bat in the lineup against right-handers, but the downside struck in a big way today; not only did he commit two errors, but Brett Lawrie, playing out of position, committed one at second. Francisco's homer was his third in five games and sixth of the month. He'll keep starting against right-handers, someway, somehow.
Francisco homers again as Jays top Tribe | 05/15/2014 10:49 PM
NewsJuan Francisco went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Thursday's win over the Indians.
ImpactIt seems like Francisco is homering every other day. Thursday's shot, of the solo variety, came against Danny Salazar in the second inning, bringing his total up to seven on the season in just 95 plate appearances. Francisco is also slugging .622, which ranks second-best among hitters with at least 90 plate appearances, trailing only Troy Tulowitzki's .750.
Francisco proves the difference in Jays win | 05/13/2014 9:46 PM
NewsJuan Francisco went 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI double, and a solo home run as the Blue Jays defeated the Indians on Tuesday.
ImpactFrancisco's sixth-inning RBI double proved to be the winning run as the Jays pulled off the one-run victory over the Tribe. Francisco also drilled a solo shot in the fifth inning off of Justin Masterson, his sixth of the season. Francisco cooled off a bit after an exorbitantly hot start to the month of May, but is still slashing .293/.386/.600 in 88 plate appearances.
Francisco fans three times in loss to Angels | 05/10/2014 4:16 PM
NewsJuan Francisco went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts in Saturday's loss to the Angels.
ImpactFrancisco has now struck out in six straight at-bats. While he has swung the bat well since joining the Jays, this shouldn't a surprise given his 33 percent career strikeout rate. Regardless, Blue Jays manager John Gibbons plans to give Brett Lawrie (hamstring) more playing time at second base once he returns to action in order to keep Francisco's bat in the lineup.
Francisco keeps on hitting as Jays top Phils | 05/08/2014 10:31 PM
NewsJuan Francisco went 3-for-3 with a walk, a double, a solo home run, and scored three times in Thursday's win against the Phillies.
ImpactFrancisco has been on fire, having hit consecutively in eight games and homered in back-to-back games. Thursday's homer was a solo shot against Luis Garcia, his fifth of the season. In just 17 games, Francisco has 12 RBI and a staggering .311/.403/.623 slash line.
Francisco homers in Jays rout of the Phillies | 05/07/2014 9:37 PM
NewsJuan Francisco went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's win over the Phillies.
ImpactFrancisco's two-run homer in the seventh inning, off of Cliff Lee, was part of a nine-run frame that put the game far out of reach. The blast is Francisco's fourth in 16 games -- he made his 2014 debut on April 19. The Jays are quite happy the Brewers couldn't find room for him as Francisco is sporting a .276/.368/.534 slash line.
Francisco homers as Jays top the Royals | 05/01/2014 10:59 PM
NewsJuan Francisco went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run in Thursday's win over the Royals.
ImpactFrancisco has been productive since the Jays called him up on April 18. His fourth-inning homer off of Jeremy Guthrie was his third of the season in 46 at-bats, and he now owns a .920 OPS. Francisco has been alternating between first base and DH and even got a start at third base on Wednesday.
Francisco leaves the yard in loss to Red Sox | 04/25/2014 10:07 PM
NewsJuan Francisco belted his first home run of the 2014 season in a losing effort against the Red Sox on Friday.
ImpactThe solo blast off Jake Peavy in the seventh inning accounted for the only run the Blue Jays would score in the ballgame. He's done a nice job as a fill-in for the injured Adam Lind, slashing .368/.455/.632 in his first six games. He'll continue to have use in AL-only leagues, particularly when facing right-handed pitching.
Blue Jays recall Juan Francisco from Triple-A | 04/18/2014 11:39 PM
NewsBlue Jays recalled INF Juan Francisco from Triple-A Buffalo.
ImpactWith Adam Lind heading to the disabled list with lower back tightness, Francisco will provide additional punch off the bench for the Blue Jays. He could be worth a look in AL-only formats.
Blue Jays expected to recall Juan Francisco | 04/18/2014 7:57 PM
NewsThe Blue Jays are expected to recall Juan Francisco from Triple-A Buffalo on Friday.
Mike Wilner on Twitter
ImpactWith Adam Lind likely heading for a stint on the disabled list, Francisco was pulled from Friday's minor league game and is likely heading to join the Blue Jays. It's unclear how much playing time he'll see, but is certainly worth a look in AL-only formats for his dual eligibility and power potential.
Blue Jays sign Juan Francisco | 04/01/2014 10:32 PM
NewsBlue Jays signed INF Juan Francisco to a minor league contract.
Hector Gomez on Twitter
ImpactHector Gomez of the Dominican radio station ZDeportes first reported the deal, and it's been confirmed by Blue Jays play-by-play man Mike Wilner. Francisco will report to Triple-A Buffalo, where he'll provide organizational depth for the Jays.
Brewers release corner infielder Francisco | 03/24/2014 2:33 PM
NewsBrewers released INF Juan Francisco.
Mike Vassallo on Twitter
ImpactThe 26-year-old was beat out by Lyle Overbay and Mark Reynolds this spring for the Brewers' opening at first base. Francisco slugged 18 home runs in 124 games last summer between Atlanta and Milwaukee, and shouldn't have trouble finding a new team. He owns a .731 career OPS in 298 major league games.
Francisco has a perfect day against the M's | 03/19/2014 6:33 PM
NewsJuan Francisco homered and walked three times in four trips to the plate against the Mariners on Wednesday.
ImpactFrancisco hit a solo homer off of Blake Beavan in the fourth inning, his only hit of the afternoon and this third homer of the spring. Francisco has hit very well in the Cactus League. He should be the left-handed complement to Mark Reynolds at first base throughout the year.
Juan Francisco hits 2 homers vs. OAK | 02/27/2014 5:18 PM
NewsJuan Francisco homered twice and drove in three runs against the Athletics on Thursday.
ImpactThat is certainly a way to introduce yourself in spring training. Both of the first baseman's homers were solo shots. Francisco tagged Tommy Milone in the second inning and Jim Johnson in the fourth. His third RBI came in the fifth when he reached on Eric Sogard's fielding error.
Juan Francisco settles on $1.35M with Brews | 01/17/2014 1:29 PM
NewsBrewers avoided arbitration with INF Juan Francisco by agreeing to a one-year, $1.35 million contract.
Joel Sherman on Twitter
ImpactFrancisco was arbitration-eligible for the first time this offseason after qualifying as a Super Two player. The free-swinger slugged 18 homers in 2013 but also batted just .227/.296/.422 overall. He'll compete for playing time at first base this season.
Juan Francisco could be option at first base | 11/10/2013 6:21 PM
NewsTom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel believes that Juan Francisco could be the leading candidate to open the 2014 season as the Brewers starting first baseman.
ImpactThe team remains open to discussing a return with Corey Hart, but doesn't plan on seeking a major upgrade via free agency. The 26-year-old Francisco is still overly prone to the strikeout (138 in 348 at-bats in 2013), but does possess massive power potential. He currently sports a 1.070 OPS in the Dominican Winter League, and is certainly someone for those in mixed leagues to keep an eye on if he secures the job.
Juan Francisco ditches leg kick | 09/23/2013 6:59 PM
NewsJuan Francisco is making changes to his swing, including ditching his leg kick.
ImpactFrancisco is also working on minimizing his movements in the batter's box. He used his new stance during a pinch-hitting appearance Sunday, which resulted in a hard groundout. "That was a really good at-bat," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "He saw the ball well and he ended up smoking a ball for an out, but he hit it well. I think if he does that, I'm excited about that stance and what I think can happen with that stance."
Juan Francisco not in Brewers lineup Saturday | 09/14/2013 11:40 AM
NewsJuan Francisco is not in the Brewers starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Reds.
Andrew Gruman on Twitter
ImpactYuniesky Betancourt is drawing the start at first base while Jeff Bianchi covers for the injured Aramis Ramirez at the hot corner. It's the second straight day off for Francisco, who is hitting .230/.308/.459 with 13 homers and 31 RBI in 77 games since being acquired by the Brewers in early June.
Francisco provides the offense vs. Rangers | 08/15/2013 12:23 AM
NewsJuan Francisco went 2-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI against the Rangers on Wednesday.
ImpactFrancisco was the entire Brewers offense on Wednesday, accounting for all four of the team's runs with his two homers. He followed a solo shot in the second inning with a three-run blast in the fourth. The slugger now has 17 home runs to go with a .252/.320/.478 batting line this season.
Juan Francisco goes deep again | 07/30/2013 11:47 PM
NewsJuan Francisco singled and launched a solo homer in Tuesday's win over the Cubs.
ImpactFrancisco's blast in the fifth put the Brew Crew on the board before they were able to come back in the ninth. Though his defense at first base has been horrendous, Francisco has now gone deep nine times in 45 games for Milwaukee.
Juan Francisco homer powers Brewers | 07/20/2013 12:09 AM
NewsJuan Francisco launched his 12th home run of the season, helping to power the Brewers to a 2-0 victory over the Marlins on Friday.
ImpactFrancisco finished the night 1-for-4. The only offense the Brewers could generate in the game came on a pair of solo homers from Francisco and Carlos Gomez. He's been an extremely welcomed addition since coming to Milwaukee, hitting .265 with seven homers and 16 RBI in his first 34 games.
Juan Francisco homers in loss to Mets | 07/06/2013 12:15 AM
NewsJuan Francisco went 2-for-3 with a solo home run, a walk, and two runs scored in Friday's loss to the Mets.
ImpactFrancisco is now hitting .394 (13-for-33) with five home runs and nine RBI over his last nine games. With his free-swinging ways, we don't expect the batting average to last, but nobody has ever questioned his power. The 26-year-old should get the bulk of the playing time at first base now that Corey Hart (knee) is out for the season, so those in deeper leagues should consider him for a corner infielder spot.
Juan Francisco drives in a pair | 07/02/2013 11:13 PM
NewsJuan Francisco walked twice and had a two-RBI double in Tuesday's 4-0 win over the Nationals.
ImpactThe only time Francisco was retired was on a highly questionable strike three call in the sixth. He's heating up at the dish, batting .346 with four homers and seven RBI over his last seven contests.
Juan Francisco launches 10th homer | 07/01/2013 10:50 PM
NewsJuan Francisco went 2-for-4 and hit his 10th homer Monday in the loss to the Nationals.
ImpactRickie Weeks and Francisco went back-to-back off Jordan Zimmermann in the sixth. The homer was Francisco's fifth in 69 at-bats for the Brewers. Unfortunately, he has just nine other hits in that span, giving him a .217 average for his new team. He's been an upgrade over what the Brewers were using at first base, though.
Juan Francisco homers for third straight game | 06/27/2013 6:16 PM
NewsJuan Francisco homered in his third straight game Thursday, ripping a solo shot against the Cubs' Blake Parker in a loss.
ImpactFrancisco struck out in his other three plate appearances. Though he's gone deep four times in 19 games since joining the Brew Crew, Francisco is batting just .196. Of course, that should be no surprise, as the big infielder has always had plus raw power but offered little else. He now has nine dingers on the year in his time with the Brewers and Braves.
Juan Francisco starts third straight game | 06/06/2013 11:33 PM
NewsJuan Francisco, starting in his third consecutive game for the Brewers, went 1-for-3 in Thursday's loss to the Phillies.
ImpactHe started at first base on Tuesday and Thursday, while manning the hot corner on Wednesday. If he continues to draw regular playing time at first base while Corey Hart remains sidelined, his immense power potential makes him an solid addition in deeper mixed leagues.
Brewers acquire struggling 3B Juan Francisco | 06/03/2013 11:54 AM
NewsBrewers acquired 3B Juan Francisco from the Braves for minor league LHP Tom Keeling.
ImpactFrancisco was designated for assignment by the Braves last week after batting just .241/.287/.398 through his first 35 games. The 25-year-old will serve in a backup role to Aramis Ramirez with the Brewers. Keeling, 25, is a Double-A reliever with 3.18 ERA in 17 appearances this season.
Braves DFA third baseman Juan Francisco | 05/30/2013 3:15 PM
NewsBraves designated 3B Juan Francisco for assignment.
ImpactIt's a surprising move given that the Braves traded for Francisco a little over one year ago. The 25-year-old batted just .237/.281/.420 in 128 games with Atlanta, but he's young and has some pop which should lead to him drawing heavy interest on waivers. The Braves will start Chris Johnson at third base going forward.
Juan Francisco hits first career grand slam | 05/08/2013 4:42 PM
NewsJuan Francisco hit his first career grand slam Wednesday off the Reds' J.J. Hoover.
ImpactThose two were traded for one another a year ago, so this had to feel especially good for Francisco. The homer was his fifth in 75 at-bats this season. His 28/4 K/BB ratio is less than encouraging, but he's been a nice starter against right-handed pitching so far.
Francisco (ankle) hitless in return to action | 05/08/2013 11:55 AM
NewsJuan Francisco (ankle) went 0-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts Tuesday in his return to action.
ImpactFrancisco suffered a mild right ankle sprain on Friday, but it was never a major concern. The 25-year-old is hitting .282/.320/.465 with four homers, 12 RBI and a .785 OPS through 22 games this season.
Juan Francisco feeling better | 05/05/2013 12:02 PM
NewsJuan Francisco (ankle) reported improvement Sunday but is not yet ready to play.
David O'Brien on Twitter
ImpactFrancisco was diagnosed with a mild right ankle sprain after leaving Friday's game. It sounds like he'll have a good chance to return to play against his former club when the Braves begin a series in Cincinnati on Monday.
Francisco day-to-day with mild ankle sprain | 05/03/2013 9:19 PM
NewsJuan Francisco is being considered day-to-day after being diagnosed with a mild ankle strain.
Mark Bowman on Twitter
ImpactWith as bad as the injury appeared, the Braves and Francisco can breathe a sigh of relief that it's just a mild strain. He was trying to get back to second base in the third inning on Friday's game, when he switched directions and badly rolled his ankle trying to get back to second base. Chris Johnson will likely handle third base while Francisco is out.
Juan Francisco leaves with ankle injury | 05/03/2013 8:32 PM
NewsJuan Francisco was removed from Friday's game against the Mets in the third inning due to an apparent ankle injury.
Adam Rubin on Twitter
ImpactFrancisco had just driven in the Braves first run of the evening with an RBI single. After advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt, he was trying to get back to second base after Jordan Schafer missed a bunt attempt, when he switched directions and badly rolled his ankle. The Braves should have an update on his status shortly.
Francisco lifts off twice against Royals | 04/16/2013 10:00 PM
NewsJuan Francisco hit two solo home runs off Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie on Tuesday.
ImpactFrancisco is part of a platoon at third base with Chris Johnson, but while Freddie Freeman is out both players have been able to sneak into the starting lineup. The playing time has been good to Francisco, as he's now hitting .306 on the year with three home runs. As long as he's hot and getting consistent playing time against right-handed pitchers, ride the wave.
Francisco powers up for first homer of 2013 | 04/10/2013 10:19 PM
NewsJuan Francisco went 3-for-4 with a home run in the Braves' 8-0 victory over the Marlins on Wednesday.
ImpactIt was the first home run of the season for the third baseman as he took Alex Sanabia deep in the fifth inning. As the left-handed hitting part of the Braves' third base platoon, Francisco has gotten a lot of playing time early and has cashed in, hitting .321 after Wednesday's game. Francisco will continue to get the majority of the playing time at the hot corner against right-handed pitchers going forward.
Francisco to start at third base Wednesday | 04/03/2013 10:22 AM
NewsJuan Francisco is expected to start at third base Wednesday against the Braves.
David O'Brien on Twitter
ImpactChris Johnson started the season opener with left-hander Cole Hamels on the hill for the Phillies, but Francisco is in there against the right-hander Roy Halladay. Francisco figures to get the most at-bats if Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez goes with a strict platoon, so his power makes him worth chasing in NL-only and deeper mixed leagues.
Juan Francisco homers to lead Braves | 03/26/2013 4:57 PM
NewsJuan Francisco homered off Brayan Villarreal in the top of the ninth to lead the Braves to a 6-5 win over the Tigers on Tuesday.
ImpactFrancisco also doubled in the game. He's been terrific this spring, hitting .354 with six homers, four doubles and 14 RBI in 65 at-bats. It does come with a 15/2 K/BB ratio, but that's part of the package with him. He's earned a chance to start at third base against right-handers next month. Chris Johnson will spell him against lefties.
Braves to platoon Francisco, Johnson at 3B | 03/21/2013 7:07 PM
NewsBraves manager Fredi Gonzalez said Thursday that Juan Francisco and Chris Johnson will likely platoon at third base to start the season.
ImpactGonzalez was hoping one of the duo would separate themselves during Grapefruit League play, but they've both played well, so he's not ready to name a starter. "I think both of those guys are playing such great baseball right now," Gonzalez said, "so it would be unfair to say (to one of them) you're the starter." Francisco will see more start as the left-handed bat and offers some power potential for fantasy owners.
Juan Francisco hits fifth homer | 03/18/2013 4:06 PM
NewsJuan Francisco went 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBI against the Phillies on Monday.
ImpactWith a .353 average and five homers, Francisco is outproducing Chris Johnson this spring, though both have been pretty good. We're hoping to see Francisco start against most right-handers early on, which would give him more fantasy value than Johnson. That's still to be determined, though.
Juan Francisco hits fourth home run Saturday | 03/16/2013 9:09 PM
NewsJuan Francisco hit his fourth home run of the spring in the Braves 4-0 win over the Yankees Saturday.
ImpactFrancisco, 25, also singled in the game and is hitting .311 on the spring. A left-handed batter, Francisco is expected to platoon with Chris Johnson at third base this season. As demonstrated by his four Grapefruit League home runs, Francisco is a good source of power but not much else. In a timeshare, he's only worth a look in deep NL-only leagues unless something changes.
Braves' 3B competition ongoing | 03/13/2013 8:49 PM
NewsBraves manager Fredi Gonzalez said he has not decided on a winner of the third base competition between Juan Francisco and Chris Johnson.
ImpactBoth went into Wednesday's game hitting well, as Francisco has batted .294 with two doubles, two homers and five RBI, while Johnson has hit .314 with a double, two homers and six RBI. Gonzalez views them as "about the same (defensively)." Ultimately, the Braves will likely go with a platoon at the position, with Francisco on the strong side against right-handers.
Juan Francisco homers | 03/07/2013 9:55 PM
NewsJuan Francisco continued his strong start to Grapefruit League play Thursday, smashing a solo homer in a loss to the Tigers.
ImpactThe blast came off of Brayan Villarreal in the seventh inning. Francisco is now batting .370 with two homers, two doubles and five RBI over his first 27 spring at-bats. The 25-year-old is expected to represent the strong side of a platoon with Chris Johnson at third base this season.
Juan Francisco homers in victory | 02/27/2013 5:12 PM
NewsJuan Francisco went 2-for-4 and hit a three-run homer as the Braves' designated hitter Wednesday in a 5-3 win over the Tigers.
ImpactBoth Braves third-base candidates did well today, as Chris Johnson went 2-for-2 with an RBI before being removed. A platoon, with Francisco playing versus righties and Johnson starting against lefties, is a possibility. Because of his power, Francisco has the greater upside for fantasy purposes.
