Mets release reliever Jose Valverde | 05/26/2014 4:52 PM
NewsMets released RHP Jose Valverde.

Valverde earns first win with scoreless 14th | 04/20/2014 6:10 PM
NewsJose Valverde earned his first win of the season after pitching a scoreless 14th inning on Sunday.
ImpactAfter being removed from the closer's role on Saturday, Valverde was called on to keep the game tied Sunday afternoon. He allowed a single but was otherwise spotless, and he was rewarded for his work when the Mets pushed a run across in the bottom half of the inning. He'll need a lot more days like that before he inserts his name back into the Mets' closer discussion.
Mets expected to make a change at closer | 04/19/2014 10:51 PM
NewsAccording to ESPN New York's Adam Rubin, the Mets are likely to make a change at closer.
Adam Rubin on Twitter
ImpactValverde surrendered three runs Saturday against the Braves in his latest of a string of rough outings. Mets manager Terry Collins said he would address his players before making an official announcement to the media. Vic Black has been putting up zeroes at Triple-A, but his control is still an issue. The Mets might go with a committee.
Mets skipper sticking with Valverde as closer | 04/16/2014 8:10 PM
NewsMets manager Terry Collins said he's sticking with Jose Valverde as his closer.
ImpactCollins was pressed about his closer situation after Valverde allowed two home runs in the ninth inning of Wednesday's win over the Diamondbacks. It was the second straight outing in which Valverde served up a homer, and he's allowed five runs over his past two appearances. The 36-year-old may still be the go-to guy for now, but his leash can't be too terribly long at this point.
Valverde serves up two dingers in relief Wed. | 04/16/2014 7:20 PM
NewsJose Valverde allowed two solo home runs in a non-save situation during Wednesday's win over the Diamondbacks.
ImpactCalled on to protect a five-run lead, the closer promptly served up back-to-back jacks to Aaron Hill and Paul Goldschmidt before escaping without further damage. The idea that he wasn't sharp because it wasn't a save situation might apply under different circumstances, but Valverde was beat up by the Angels his last time out as well. This carriage might be quickly turning back into a pumpkin.
Jose Valverde gives up three-run homer | 04/13/2014 1:23 AM
NewsJose Valverde blew a save by giving up a three-run homer to the Angels' Raul Ibanez in the ninth inning Saturday.
ImpactThere's the Valverde we know and love. He had pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts, so he was really saving up for this one. The Mets will hope it's not a sign of things to come, but with Valverde, who really knows? Gonzalez Germen's stock is on the rise.
Jose Valverde is perfect in ninth | 04/10/2014 11:26 PM
NewsJose Valverde retired all three Braves he faced for his second save on Thursday.
ImpactValverde put the splitter back into his arsenal tonight, throwing three of them among his seven pitches. He ended up getting two popups, including one on the splitter (ironically, on the worst of them that he threw), and he then struck out Jason Heyward with a fastball to end it. If Valverde regains his splitter, he'll have a much better chance of surviving as the Mets' closer. The pitcher has been a non-factor for him for about 2 1/2 years now, though.
Valverde escapes non-save situation Tuesday | 04/08/2014 10:44 PM
NewsJose Valverde made it interesting in Tuesday's win over the Braves, loading the bases before escaping without incident in the Mets' 4-0 win.
ImpactValverde was brought in to hold down a four-run lead but instead gave up two straight singles. After a fielder's choice, the right-hander then compounded his struggles with a throwing error that loaded the bases with one out. Gerald Laird proceeded to pop out and a Jason Heyward fly ball fell short of the seats, allowing Valverde to exhale. The shaky outing did little to cement his spot as the Mets' closer, but he's still got the gig for now.
Mets staying in-house for closer options | 04/07/2014 1:06 PM
NewsThe Mets plan to evaluate internal options, including Jose Valverde, to address their closer situation without Bobby Parnell.
Matt Ehalt on Twitter
ImpactParnell will undergo Tommy John surgery on Tuesday, ending his season. Jose Valverde, with 287 career saves and the veteran of a very young bullpen, is the Mets' initial option and appears to be the leading candidate for most of the team's save opportunities. As a result, Valverde should be picked up in all fantasy formats.
Collins confirms: Valverde is Mets' closer | 04/02/2014 4:03 PM
NewsMets manager Terry Collins confirmed Wednesday that Jose Valverde will fill in as the team's closer.
Adam Rubin on Twitter
ImpactBobby Parnell is out with a torn medial collateral ligament and could be facing season-ending Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery. That gives Valverde significant fantasy value (for as long as he can hold the job). The 36-year-old right-hander had a rough 5.49 ERA in 19 1/3 innings last season for Detroit.
Valverde expected to serve as Mets' closer | 04/01/2014 1:52 PM
NewsJose Valverde is expected to serve as the Mets' closer with Bobby Parnell (elbow) sidelined.
Andy Martino on Twitter
ImpactThis could be more of a statement about the Mets' bullpen than anything else, but Valverde looks like the best option now that Parnell is headed to the disabled list. Though, to his credit, the 36-year-old looked solid in the spring and struck out three batters over 1 1/3 innings on Opening Day against the Nationals. He's a must-own in all fantasy formats for now, but we're still not convinced he has much left in the tank. The Mets could eventually look to Vic Black, Jeurys Familia, or Gonzalez Germen if it turns out that Parnell needs surgery. It's even possible that they could sign a free agent like Joel Hanrahan. In other words, don't look at Valverde as a long-term option for your fantasy team.
Valverde fans three batters in 1 1/3 innings | 03/31/2014 5:09 PM
NewsJose Valverde struck out three batters over 1 1/3 scoreless innings Monday against the Nationals.
ImpactHis appearance came an inning before Bobby Parnell blew the first save of the 2014 MLB season. Valverde is next-in-line for ninth-inning opportunities behind Parnell, who has had trouble finding his fastball velocity. Stash the veteran right-hander in fantasy leagues.
Valverde may see some save chances early | 03/26/2014 6:53 PM
NewsJose Valverde could see some save opportunities early in the season as Bobby Parnell returns from neck surgery.
ImpactParnell is the Mets' undisputed closer, but Mets manager Terry Collins has expressed some concern about using Parnell three straight days. Valverde, who made the team as a non-roster invitee, would be first in line for those saves. Otherwise, the 36-year-old will serve as the team's primary setup man.
Valverde added to 40-man roster | 03/26/2014 1:11 PM
NewsMets purchased the contract of RHP Jose Valverde from Triple-A Las Vegas.
ImpactValverde was a non-roster invitee this spring, but he appears to be the likely primary set-up man for Bobby Parnell now that Vic Black will begin the year in the minors. The veteran right-hander owns a 3.00 ERA and 7/1 K/BB ratio over nine innings this spring. We're skeptical, but the Mets are hoping that he still has something left in the tank.
Valverde a favorite to crack Mets' bullpen? | 03/19/2014 11:20 AM
NewsCBS Sports' Jon Heyman believes Jose Valverde will make the Mets.
Jon Heyman on Twitter
ImpactComing off a rough 5.59 ERA over 20 appearances with the Tigers last season, Valverde inked a minor league contract with the Mets last month. Papa Grande will receive a $1 million salary if he makes the team.
Jose Valverde gives up two runs | 03/11/2014 5:13 PM
NewsJose Valverde surrendered two runs and three hits in his inning Tuesday versus the Cardinals.
ImpactESPNNewYork.com's Adam Rubin penciled Valverde into the pen in his updated Mets roster projection today, but there's still a ways to go before there will be a final decision on his status. He's now allowed three runs in four innings this spring.
Mets sign Jose Valverde to minor league deal | 02/12/2014 10:10 AM
NewsMets signed RHP Jose Valverde to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Valverde has not signed contract with Snakes | 12/17/2013 11:33 AM
NewsUpdating a previous report, Jose Valverde has not signed a contract with the Diamondbacks.
Enrique Rojas on Twitter
ImpactValverde denied CBS Sports' Jon Heyman's report that he had inked a minor league deal in a conversation with Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes. Valverde recently switched agents from Scott Boras to Praver/Shapiro. The 35-year-old registered a 5.59 ERA over 19 1/3 innings with Detroit in 2013 before the Tigers designated him for assignment.
Report: Arizona inks Valverde to minors deal | 12/17/2013 9:23 AM
NewsCBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that Jose Valverde has agreed to a minor-league contract with the Diamondbacks.
Jon Heyman on Twitter
ImpactPapa Grande's career has derailed over the past two seasons, as he's posted a 4.18 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 67/33 K/BB ratio over 88 1/3 innings. Things really bottomed out in 2013, when the 35-year-old posted a 5.59 ERA over 19 1/3 innings with Detroit. Valverde isn't likely to ever see the ninth inning in Arizona, as the Snakes have a host of pitchers that include Addison Reed, J.J. Putz, David Hernandez and Brad Ziegler ahead of him in the bullpen hierarchy.
Tigers release reliever Jose Valverde | 08/07/2013 2:24 PM
NewsTigers released RHP Jose Valverde.
ImpactValverde accepted a minor league assignment after being designated for assignment in June, but the Tigers are ready to move on. The 35-year-old posted a 5.59 ERA, nine saves and a 19/6 K/BB ratio over 19 1/3 innings with Detroit this season. His days of fantasy relevancy are long gone.
Valverde placed on Triple-A inactive list | 07/13/2013 3:54 PM
NewsJose Valverde has been placed on the inactive list with Triple-A Toledo.
ImpactValverde will be away from the team to attend to a personal matter. He has a 4.50 ERA and two saves in four games since his demotion.
Jose Valverde accepts assignment to Triple-A | 06/27/2013 4:57 PM
NewsTigers sent RHP Jose Valverde outright to Triple-A Toledo.
Jason Beck on Twitter
ImpactNot surprisingly, Valverde passed through waivers after being designated for assignment last Friday. He has accepted the assignment to Triple-A and will attempt to keep his career alive, but his days of fantasy relevancy are almost certainly over.
Tigers designate Jose Valverde for assignment | 06/21/2013 3:37 PM
NewsTigers designated RHP Jose Valverde for assignment.
ImpactValverde pitched well initially after being called up by the Tigers in late April, but it came crashing down of late, as he blew two of five save chances while posting a 13.50 ERA over his last eight appearances. He should be able to catch on elsewhere, but his days as a closer anywhere are surely over. Joaquin Benoit has taken over as the Tigers' closer.
Jose Valverde lit up in blowout | 06/19/2013 4:45 PM
NewsMopping up against the Orioles, Jose Valverde gave up four runs and five hits in the ninth Wednesday.
ImpactThe Tigers were already down 9-3, so Valverde's showing didn't hurt the team. It did, however, demonstrate once again why he's a really hard guy to trust. When Chris Davis took him deep today, it upped his total to six homers allowed in 19 1/3 innings.
Leyland sticking with Valverde for now | 06/14/2013 6:07 PM
NewsTigers manager Jim Leyland indicated Friday that he's not ready to remove Jose Valverde from the closer role.
Chris Iott on Twitter
Impact"We're going to use Jose Valverde until we decide Jose Valverde can or can't do it or we've got somebody else better," said Leyland. It's not exactly a vote of confidence, but it sounds like they will stick with him for now. The 35-year-old has a 4.15 ERA, three blown saves and five homers allowed in just 18 appearances this season. It would be surprising if he didn't eventually lose the closer gig.
Jose Valverde takes third blown save | 06/12/2013 5:38 PM
NewsAfter coming in with a man on first, Jose Valverde gave up a two-run homer to Lorenzo Cain to take a blown save on Wednesday.
ImpactManager Jim Leyland left Drew Smyly in to face fellow left-hander Eric Hosmer to start the ninth in a 2-0 game, even though Hosmer has hit lefties better than righties this year. The strategy backfired when Hosmer singled, and Valverde went on to give up his 15th homer in 17 1/3 innings this year. That's two more than he allowed in 69 innings in the regular season last year. Valverde is still an acceptable 9-for-12 saving games for the Tigers, but he doesn't look like any sort of long-term fix. We'd be surprised if he finishes the season on Detroit's roster.
Valverde closes out Royals to earn ninth save | 06/11/2013 11:35 PM
NewsJose Valverde worked a scoreless ninth inning against the Royals to pick up his ninth save of the season on Tuesday.
ImpactValverde is still a high-wire act, as the Royals had a runner on second base with nobody out before he escaped without harm. Despite his uneasiness, he's earned nine saves in 11 chances and is still getting the call from Tigers manager Jim Leyland. The right-hander has struck out 16 batters in 16 2/3 innings this season.
Valverde earns eighth save, Tigers top Tribe | 06/08/2013 7:56 PM
NewsJose Valverde tallied his eighth save of 2013 in the Tigers' 6-4 win over Cleveland on Saturday.
ImpactValverde allowed a one-out single to Indians slugger Carlos Santana and then walked Yan Gomes, but he worked out of that jam by netting back-to-back strikeouts from Ryan Raburn and Mike Aviles. Valverde has a rough 4.02 ERA in 15 2/3 frames this season but he is locked into the Tigers' ninth-inning role for the time being.
Valverde surrenders pair of homers vs. Tribe | 06/07/2013 10:22 PM
NewsJose Valverde, coming on in a non-save situation, allowed a pair of solo home runs against the Indians on Friday.
ImpactHe also allowed a single to Jason Kipnis, and nearly blew the four-run lead that he was tasked with protecting. While he started off the season strong, he's now allowed six runs (four home runs) in his last 2 2/3 innings. With the Tigers expecting to compete for a World Series, you have to wonder how long they'll trust Valverde with the ball in the ninth inning.
Jose Valverde implodes in loss to Orioles | 05/31/2013 11:14 PM
NewsJose Valverde gave up four runs for his second blown save of the season in Friday's loss to the Orioles.
ImpactValverde entered the bottom of the ninth inning with a 5-3 cushion, but gave up a leadoff homer to Nick Markakis and back-to-back singles to Adam Jones and Chris Davis. He was able to retire Matt Wieters and J.J. Hardy on pop-ups, but Chris Dickerson then connected for a walk-off three-run homer to win it for Baltimore. Valverde entered Friday's outing having allowed just one run on three hits and four walks over his first 12 innings this season, so there's no reason for panic quite yet. But the honeymoon might be over.
Valverde gets sixth save, Tigers beat Pirates | 05/27/2013 4:37 PM
NewsJose Valverde earned his sixth save of the season Monday in the Tigers' 6-5 defeat of the Pirates.
ImpactValverde allowed a one-out single to Travis Snider but retired the next two batters, finishing off the Tigers' Memorial Day victory in Detroit with a strikeout of Pirates star Andrew McCutchen. Valverde has a gorgeous 0.75 ERA and 0.58 WHIP in 12 innings this season. Maybe there really is something left in the tank.
Valverde works perfect frame, earns 5th save | 05/24/2013 12:50 AM
NewsJose Valverde worked a scoreless ninth inning against the Twins on Thursday, striking out two and earning his fifth save of the season.
ImpactPapa Grande -- unwanted by 30 teams a month and a half ago -- has been lethal out of the back end of Detroit's bullpen. Through 11 innings, he has a 0.82 ERA, 0.55 WHIP and 10/4 K/BB rate. He's only given up two hits and one run.
Valverde shuts down Rangers to earn 4th save | 05/17/2013 11:21 PM
NewsJose Valverde shut the Rangers down in the ninth inning on Friday, preserving a one-run lead and earning his fourth save of the season.
ImpactHe did surrender a one-out walk, but was able to avoid further damage. It was a nice bounceback effort for the veteran closer, as he blew his first save of the season in his last opportunity against the Indians on Sunday. Despite missing all of spring training, he has looked relatively sharp in the early going, converting four of his five save chances while compiling a 1.13 ERA and 0.62 WHIP.
Valverde bounces back with scoreless inning | 05/14/2013 10:53 PM
NewsJose Valverde rebounded from his first blown save of the season to pitch a scoreless ninth inning against the Astros on Tuesday.
ImpactIt wasn't a save situation and it was against the Astros, after all, but it was still a positive sign for the right-hander. He struck out two in the outing, his first since blowing the save against the Indians on Sunday. He's still the Tigers closer going forward.
Jose Valverde blows first save | 05/12/2013 5:25 PM
NewsJose Valverde suffered his first blown save of the season Sunday, coughing up a one-run lead in a loss to the Indians.
ImpactAfter walking Michael Bourn to start the inning and then watching him steal second, Valverde rebounded with a strikeout and a flyout. He then issued another walk to Jason Giambi, though, and Michael Brantley tied things up with a solid single to left field. Valverde owners will no doubt be thinking bad thoughts, but Brantley's hit is the lone base knock Papa Grande has given up in six appearances this season. He still has a good amount of job security at the moment.
Jose Valverde shuts down Astros to earn save | 05/03/2013 11:29 PM
NewsJose Valverde worked a scoreless ninth inning against the Astros on Friday, earning his third save of the season.
ImpactIt appears that Papa Granda is back in full force. He did allow a one-out walk to Robbie Grossman, but it didn't lead to any further damage. He's looked very impressive through his first four outings. He's yet to allow an earned run, and just one hitter has reached base against him. He's secured his place as the Tigers' primary option in the ninth inning and needs to be started in all formats.
Jose Valverde not available for Monday's game | 04/29/2013 4:12 PM
NewsJose Valverde is not available for Monday's game against the Twins.

ImpactValverde has pitched on back-to-back days and Tigers manager Jim Leyland isn't ready to use him in three straight. Joaquin Benoit will pitch if a save situation arises Monday.
Valverde notches second save of season | 04/27/2013 4:20 PM
NewsJose Valverde tossed a perfect ninth inning Saturday for his second save.
ImpactValverde struck out two and threw 12 out of 14 pitches for strikes. He topped out at 95 mph with his fastball and even mixed in a couple of splitters this time. While the decision to bring him back in the closer role caught many by surprise, he should be owned in all fantasy leagues right now.
Valverde earns save in first game with Tigers | 04/24/2013 11:56 PM
NewsJose Valverde notched his first save of the year in the Tigers' 7-5 victory over the Royals on Wednesday.
ImpactJust like riding a bike. After failing to find a high-paying closing job this winter, the 35-year-old Valverde signed a minor league contract with the Tigers on April 4 and made his first appearance with the club on Wednesday night. Facing the top of the Royals' lineup, Valverde pitched a perfect ninth inning and even hit 95 mph at one point with his fastball. The Tigers seemed to tire of the veteran righty's high-wire act after last season, but desperation has brought the two parties together again.
Leyland says Jose Valverde will be his closer | 04/23/2013 7:51 PM
NewsTigers purchased the contract of RHP Jose Valverde from High-A Lakeland.
Detroit Tigers on Twitter
ImpactNot only that, but manager Jim Leyland said Valverde will be his closer. There had been some conflicting information about when the fiery reliever would officially be added, but now we know that he'll be available for Wednesday's game and that he'll be used in the ninth inning. It's a surprise that Leyland is willing to throw him into the fire right away after a few games in extended spring training and High-A, but it's clear he never had much trust in Joaquin Benoit as a closer. Obviously, Valverde should be added in all fantasy leagues where he's still available.
Valverde will be added to pen as soon as Fri. | 04/23/2013 7:29 PM
NewsJose Valverde is expected to be added to the Tigers' roster as soon as Friday.
Lynn Henning on Twitter
ImpactValverde was spotted on a flight to Detroit on Tuesday afternoon, but it will apparently be at least a couple days before he's officially added to the roster. The veteran reliever looked good in extended spring training and in the lower minors, but he'll have to prove himself in a middle relief role first before he receives any consideration for the ninth inning.

ImpactValverde was spotted on a flight to Detroit on Tuesday afternoon and could be added to the major league roster as early as Wednesday. ImpactValverde was has been in extended spring training since being signed to a minor league deal on April 4. He should be promoted up to Triple-A and then to the majors before too long. The embattled reliever could be an option at closer eventually for the Tigers.
Valverde nearly ready for minor league games | 04/18/2013 8:56 AM
NewsJose Valverde tossed another scoreless inning on Wednesday afternoon in an extended spring training game.
ImpactValverde is expected to report to High-A Lakeland at some point this weekend and could be promoted to Triple-A Toledo by the middle of next week. The 35-year-old right-hander signed a minor league contract with the Tigers on April 4 and might eventually become a ninth-inning option in Detroit. He's worth a stash in deep leagues.
Jose Valverde nearing minor league assignment | 04/16/2013 8:00 PM
NewsJose Valverde will begin pitching for High-A Lakeland later this week if Wednesday's bullpen session goes fine.
Lynn Henning on Twitter
ImpactValverde is reportedly throwing in the low- to mid-90s with a good splitter, though he's yet to face hitters other than a few extended spring training innings. He doesn't figure to be in the minors long before the Tigers add him to their bullpen. He's worthy of stashing in fantasy leagues if you're looking for saves.
Valverde throws in extended spring game | 04/15/2013 5:22 PM
NewsJose Valverde struck out four over two perfect innings Monday in an extended spring training game.
ImpactValverde tossed a hitless inning in his first extended spring game last Friday. It shouldn't be long before he joins Triple-A Toledo and he could eventually be an option for the major league bullpen. Fantasy owners desperate for saves should consider stashing him.
Jose Valverde pitches in extended spring game | 04/12/2013 5:31 PM
NewsJose Valverde tossed a hitless inning Friday in an extended spring training game.
ImpactValverde, who returned to the Tigers last week on a minor league deal deal, struck out two and walked one. He'll likely soon head to Triple-A Toledo to test himself against advanced competition. The 35-year-old can opt out of his contract if he isn't added to the major league roster by May 5. There's a chance that he could figure into the closer role again, but Tigers manager Jim Leyland is giving Joaquin Benoit a shot right now.
Jose Valverde reports to Tigers' complex | 04/10/2013 2:55 PM
NewsJose Valverde has reported to the Tigers' spring training complex in Lakeland, Florida.
ImpactValverde recently returned to the Tigers' on a minor league deal and is expected to pitch in an extended spring training game later this week. He'll likely move on to Triple-A Toledo from there. The 35-year-old has the ability to opt out of his minor league deal on May 5 if he isn't added to the major league roster.

ImpactThe Tigers said all offseason that they had no interest in bringing Valverde back, but they've struggled to find a ninth-inning solution and the deal comes with very little risk. Valverde will do some throwing at the Tigers' spring training complex in Lakeland, Florida before joining Triple-A Toledo. If he pitches well for the Mud Hens, he could climb back onto Detroit's 25-man roster. The 35-year-old may be a decent stash in deeper fantasy leagues.
Valverde throws for teams in the Dominican | 03/28/2013 9:05 PM
NewsAgent Scott Boras said Thursday that his client, Jose Valverde, has thrown bullpen sessions for scouts from multiple teams in recent days.
ImpactHe's scheduled to throw for a couple more teams in the coming days. Boras wouldn't reveal which teams have scouted Valverde, but he expects the animated reliever to find a club soon. "Our plan was to wait and see what closer options availed themselves at this time," Boras said. Valverde's former team, the Tigers, are not expected to have interest in him, despite the fact that they will go into the season with a closer by committee.

NewsJose Valverde's agent, Scott Boras, said Monday that his client has dropped 18 pounds this offseason.

ImpactBoras also said that Valverde is hitting 95 mph in his bullpen workouts. The veteran right-hander has struggled to attract interest from teams this winter after looking rough in last year's playoffs. The Tigers have stated that they have no plans to bring him back.
Leyland says Valverde is 'not in the picture' | 03/04/2013 12:57 PM
NewsTigers manager Jim Leyland said Monday that re-signing Jose Valverde is still "not in the picture."
Jason Beck on Twitter
ImpactJoel Sherman of the New York Post reported Saturday that Leyland was pushing for the Tigers to bring back Valverde, but Leyland insisted Monday morning that he has had no discussions on the topic with the Detroit front office. Bruce Rondon has been a mess so far in camp, but the Tigers seem committed to filling the vacant closer role from within. Valverde's free agency rolls on.

ImpactValverde had been hoping to use the WBC to audition for a job somewhere, but that's now out the window. It's beginning to look like the charismatic reliever will still be unemployed when the season begins.
Tigers not considering bringing back Valverde | 02/21/2013 11:00 AM
NewsLynn Henning of the Detroit News reports that the Tigers are not considering re-signing Jose Valverde.
Lynn Henning on Twitter
ImpactMembers of the Tigers have endorsed Valverde in recent days, but Henning hears that "they haven't for a moment considered signing him." That might tell you all you need to know about his decline. The Tigers intend to give rookie fireballer Bruce Rondon a shot at the closer job this spring while Phil Coke and Joaquin Benoit are among the alternatives.

ImpactHe'll join a talented bullpen which is also set to include names like Fernando Rodney, Octavio Dotel and Santiago Casilla. Valverde had a 3.78 ERA and 48/27 K/BB ratio in 69 innings last season and remains a free agent.
Mets unlikely to sign Valverde before season | 02/17/2013 3:22 PM
NewsAndy Martino of the New York Daily News reports that the Mets aren't expected to sign Jose Valverde before the start of the season.
Andy Martino on Twitter
ImpactMartino notes that the Mets could eventually sign Valverde if the reliever doesn't catch on elsewhere during spring training, but that's unlikely to happen. Valverde seems unlikely to net a closer job wherever he lands, so his fantasy appeal figures to be pretty limited in 2013.
Mets could still pursue Valverde as closer | 02/17/2013 9:28 AM
NewsKen Davidoff of the New York Post reports that the door remains "slightly ajar" for Jose Valverde to join the Mets as their closer.
New York Post
ImpactAdam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com reported earlier this month that there was interest, and evidently the possibility remains. Valverde's market has obviously been slow to develop this offseason following an uneven 2012 campaign where he eventually lost his closer gig during the playoffs. While the veteran righty is probably miscast in the ninth inning, he's still a solid reliever.
Boras receiving calls on Jose Valverde | 02/16/2013 12:42 AM
NewsJose Valverde's agent, Scott Boras, said Friday that interest in his client is growing and that he has fielded calls in recent days.
ImpactThis could be the case of Boras trying to drum up some interest in his client, but it is surprising to see him still unsigned this deep into February. While he struggled down the stretch and in the postseason in 2012, the 34-year-old right-hander would still be a solid addition to many bullpens around the league. He's unlikely to get anywhere near the closer's role though, so his days of fantasy relevance are likely over.
Boras denies planting Valverde-to-MIA rumor | 02/06/2013 11:56 AM
NewsAccording to Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald, agent Scott Boras has denied planting a rumor suggesting that the Marlins were interested in his client, Jose Valverde.
Impact"We did not originate that story," said Boras, who claims that the rumor originated from an ESPN reporter who went with the story before getting confirmation from the agent's office. Boras said there was "no motive" for him to plant such a report, because it could easily be refuted by the team in question, which the Marlins did. Valverde remains a free agent and will have to look elsewhere for an opportunity.
Marlins not close to deal with Jose Valverde | 02/04/2013 1:31 PM
NewsClark Spencer of the Miami Herald was told Monday that reports about the Marlins nearing a deal with free agent reliever Jose Valverde are "utterly false."

ImpactThe two sides are talking, according to CBS Sports' Danny Knobler, but there is no agreement in place. Valverde, 34, registered a 3.78 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in 69 innings last season for the Tigers. It was Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes who initially reported that a deal was close.

ImpactValverde will likely operate in a setup role for Miami in front of closer Steve Cishek. The 34-year-old right-hander posted a 3.78 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 48/27 K/BB ratio in 69 innings last season for the Tigers.
Mets considering Jose Valverde as closer | 02/01/2013 10:41 AM
NewsAdam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com reports that the Mets are pursuing Jose Valverde "to compete -- or more likely unseat -- Frank Francisco as closer."
ESPN New York
ImpactMets general manager Sandy Alderson didn't express much confidence in Francisco as his closer earlier this week, and it appears that he might find a replacement before spring training. Francisco Rodriguez and Brian Wilson are also on Alderson's radar, but it sounds like Valverde is his primary target. Rubin notes, though, that a deal with Valverde "would have to be on the Mets' terms... probably be akin to the contract to which Shaun Marcum agreed ($4 million)." Marcum can make an additional $4 million in incentives, and Valverde would likely have incentives in his deal for games finished or saves. He made $9 million with the Tigers in 2012, when he held a 3.78 ERA while notching 35 saves.
Boras expects interest in Valverde to heat up | 01/20/2013 6:07 PM
NewsNow that Rafael Soriano has signed, agent Scott Boras said he expects Jose Valverde to receive more interest from teams.
Detroit Free Press
ImpactTigers GM Dave Dombrowski told MLB Network Radio on Wednesday that he doesn't anticipate bringing Valverde back, and hard-throwing rookie Bruce Rondon is set to open the season as Detroit's closer. Despite a disastrous postseason, Valverde was able to save 35 games in 2012, and should be able to land a one-year deal as a setup man with closing experience.
Jose Valverde 'doubtful' to return to Tigers | 01/16/2013 12:42 PM
NewsTigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said on MLB Network Radio on Wednesday that it's "doubtful" that free agent reliever Jose Valverde will return.

ImpactValverde would prefer to close, but he's not going to get the opportunity with the Tigers, as hard-throwing rookie Bruce Rondon is expected to get a shot. Meanwhile, Phil Coke and Joaquin Benoit provide in-house alternatives if he stumbles.
