|Assets:||Has an excellent heater and his stuff is particularly nasty against right-handed hitters. His change-up has become a true out pitch. Can either set up or close, as need be.|
|Flaws:||Would be more effective if he wasted a few more pitches, since he's always around the plate. Tends to lose effectiveness with overuse over the course of the 162-game schedule.|

Rodney blows 3rd save as Angels walk off | 07/20/2014 7:33 PM
NewsFernando Rodney blew his third save of the season, allowing two runs in 1 1/3 innings as the Angels walked off winners on Sunday.
ImpactManager Lloyd McClendon brought Rodney in to get the final two outs of the eighth inning. Rodney retired both hitters he faced. But the ninth started with Mike Trout, who walked, and it only got worse from there. Albert Pujols drove in Trout with a double, Josh Hamilton singled, and Howie Kendrick was intentionally walked to load the bases. Rodney appeared to be on his way out of the jam, getting David Freese to ground into a double play. After intentionally walking Efren Navarro, Rodney allowed a walk-off single to center to Grant Green. Rodney is now 27-for-30 in save chances with a 2.33 ERA, a 1.24 WHIP, and a 44/16 K/BB ratio.

NewsFernando Rodney has been added to the American League All-Star roster.

ImpactRodney is replacing Rays ace David Price, who opted out because he will be starting Sunday versus the Blue Jays. Rodney leads the American League with 27 saves and holds a 1.98 ERA on the season.
Fernando Rodney slams door on White Sox | 07/05/2014 6:58 PM
NewsFernando Rodney slammed the door on the White Sox in the 14th inning on Saturday, retiring all three hitters he faced to preserve a one-run victory.
ImpactRodney collected his 25th save of the season for his efforts. After a rough first month of the season, he has really settled in as the Mariners closer, compiling a 2.12 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 39/11 K/BB ratio over 34 innings while making good on 25 of his 27 save opportunities.
Fernando Rodney slams door on Indians | 06/29/2014 8:22 PM
NewsFernando Rodney slammed the door on the Indians on Sunday, working a perfect ninth inning to protect a three-run advantage and earn his 23rd save of the season.
ImpactHe also preserved a victory for Felix Hernandez who hurled eight shutout innings on the afternoon. After struggling through the first month of the season, Rodney has been exceptional in the ninth inning for the Mariners, and now sports a 2.23 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 37/11 K/BB ratio over 32 1/3 innings on the season.
Rodney earns AL-best 21st save against Royals | 06/22/2014 5:52 PM
NewsFernando Rodney threw a scoreless ninth inning to earn his 21st save of the year Sunday against the Royals.
ImpactRodney ceded a two-out single to Mike Moustakas to make things slightly more interesting, but he struck out Pedro Ciriaco to end the game. His 21 saves are most in the American League, and he owns a 2.08 ERA and 1.25 WHIP through 30 1/3 innings. There will likely be plenty more arrows fired in Seattle before the season is through.
Rodney picks up 19th save in win over KC | 06/21/2014 2:13 AM
NewsFernando Rodney pitched a scoreless ninth on Friday.
ImpactSeattle put up two runs in the top of the ninth and handed the 7-5 lead to Rodney. He gave up a pair of singles, but worked his way out of trouble to earn his 19th save of the year. While Rodney might occasionally get into trouble with his 1.27 WHIP, he's only blown two saves on the year.
Rodney earns 18th save as M's defeat Rays | 06/09/2014 4:34 PM
NewsFernando Rodney collected his 18th save of the season Monday in the Mariners' win over the Rays.
ImpactRodney retired all three batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth inning against his former team. He is quietly putting together an outstanding first half, now with a 2.19 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 24 2/3 innings.
Fernando Rodney converts save No. 16 | 06/04/2014 3:53 PM
NewsFernando Rodney nailed down his 16th save of the season with a perfect inning in Wednesday's win over the Braves.
ImpactFreddie Freeman flew out to the warning track to start the ninth, but Rodney induced a weak grounder from Justin Upton and then struck out Evan Gattis to end it. The Mariners' closer has converted 16-of-18 save chances so far this season while posting a 2.38 ERA and 28/10 K/BB ratio over 22 2/3 frames.
Rodney earns one-out save, M's top Angels | 05/29/2014 1:09 AM
NewsFernando Rodney recorded his 13th -- and easiest -- save of the year by recording the final out of Wednesday's win against the Angels.
ImpactFelix Hernandez recorded the first 26 outs, but the 27th proved elusive and Lloyd McClendon didn't want to take any chances. He called upon Rodney, who three pitches later coaxed a David Freese line out to short. The 37-year-old Rodney is a solid 13-for-15 in save opportunities with a nice 2.75 ERA, but he's been reliably unreliable once again in posting a 1.53 WHIP. He's only given up two base runners over his last four appearances, to be fair.
Rodney locks down 11th save as M's beat Stros | 05/23/2014 1:29 AM
NewsFernando Rodney held the Astros without a base runner over a scoreless ninth inning to preserve the Mariners' 3-1 victory on Thursday.
ImpactIt's nice to see Rodney work a stress free 1-2-3 frame after watching him work out of so many jams already this season. He's giving up too many base runners -- as his 1.58 WHIP attests -- though the veteran closer hasn't necessarily disappointed in going 12-for-14 in save conversions with a 2.95 ERA and 23/9 K/BB rate over 18 1/3 innings.
Rodney closes out Athletics for ninth save | 05/07/2014 7:31 PM
NewsFernando Rodney allowed a hit but held the Athletics scoreless in the bottom of the 10th inning to preserve the Mariners' 6-4 win on Wednesday.
ImpactRodney got two easy outs before an Eric Sogard double made things interesting, but he froze Craig Gentry to earn his ninth save. He hasn't allowed a run in 4 1/3 innings, and overall the right-hander has a 2.63 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 20/6 K/BB ratio in 13 2/3 innings.
Rodney locks down 8th save as M's beat A's | 05/06/2014 1:01 AM
NewsFernando Rodney earned his eighth save of the season as the Mariners topped the A's Monday.
ImpactIt was an easy 1-2-3 appearance which included a strikeout. The right-hander has allowed a few more hits than you'd like thus far, but he's been effective overall, thanks mostly to a spectacular strikeout rate. Rodney is now 8-for-9 in save opportunities to go with a 2.84 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 19/6 K/BB rate over 12 2/3 innings.
Rodney earns seventh save in win over HOU | 05/03/2014 7:45 PM
NewsFernando Rodney earned his seventh save of the season as the Mariners topped the Astros on Saturday.
ImpactRodney entered the game in the bottom of the eighth inning and recorded the final four outs in order, racking up two strikeouts. The right-hander hasn't been overly sharp this year, but he's 7-for-8 in save opportunities.
Rodney earns sixth save as Mariners top Yanks | 05/01/2014 10:18 PM
NewsFernando Rodney tossed a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his sixth save as the Mariners defeated the Yankees on Thursday.
ImpactRodney was never in danger, allowing only a two-out single to Ichiro Suzuki, but it was yet again another unclean inning for the veteran closer. He has had one 1-2-3 inning in 11 appearances. Rodney has converted six of seven save opportunities, but one has to wonder just how long his tightrope act can last. He does have 16 strikeouts in 10 1/3 innings, which is comforting.
Rodney bounces back with clean inning Sunday | 04/27/2014 9:05 PM
NewsFernando Rodney pitched a scoreless ninth inning, striking out two, to earn the save in Sunday's win over the Rangers.
ImpactRodney allowed two runs in a save against the Rangers on Friday, but he was much better this time around. Rodney struck out two and didn't allow a baserunner in the inning. He's got five saves in six chances this year.
Fernando Rodney gets an ugly save | 04/26/2014 1:52 AM
NewsFernando Rodney recorded a save Friday despite allowing two runs in the ninth against the Rangers.
ImpactIt took a game-saving stab from Justin Smoak to make it happen. Before that, Rodriguez issued two walks with the bases loaded. He had retired just one of six batters before Adrian Beltre's liner was turned into a double play. The Mariners can't have a whole lot of faith in Rodney at this point, even if he does have just the one blown save. His WHIP stands at 2.05, for crying out loud. If he gets lit up at any point within the next several days, they could make a quick switch to Danny Farquhar.
Rodney blows save as the Rangers walk off | 04/16/2014 11:10 PM
NewsFernando Rodney blew his first save of the season and earned the loss, serving up two runs to the Rangers in the ninth inning as they walked off 3-2 winners on Wednesday.
ImpactRodney, who had been 3-for-3 in save opportunities, appeared to have another easy night on his hands, getting the first two outs in the ninth. Then he walked Mitch Moreland, saw David Murphy reach on Brad Miller's throwing error, threw a wild pitch to allow the tying run to score, then gave up the winning run on Leonys Martin's walk-off single. Rodney always finds a way to make it interesting, but he has earned 85 saves and posted a 1.91 ERA over the last two seasons.
Rodney locks down 2nd save as M's beat Halos | 04/09/2014 1:22 AM
NewsFernando Rodney earned his second save of the season in the Mariners' 5-3 win over the Angels on Tuesday.
ImpactThis was vintage Rodney. The right-hander opened the frame by inexplicably walking the first two batters he faced. It didn't appear as though he could locate the plate with Bartolo Colon's fork, so skipper Lloyd McClendon came out for a chat. Rodney promptly blew away Ian Stewart and Howie Kendrick, and then induced a game-ending lazy Raul Ibanez fly to left. Rodney hasn't allowed a run in 2 2/3 innings over three appearances as a Mariner and is now 2-for-2 in save conversions with his new club.
Mariners, Rodney finalize two-year, $14M deal | 02/13/2014 1:05 PM
NewsMariners signed RHP Fernando Rodney to a two-year, $14 million contract.
ImpactThe deal was agreed upon last week and then finalized Thursday after Rodney reported to Mariners camp and passed his physical. The 36-year-old right-hander threw the hardest average fastball of his career in 2013 and should have enough left in the tank to serve as a steady ninth-inning presence this summer in Seattle. Danny Farquhar will presumably open the season in a setup role.
Report: M's sign Rodney to two-yr, $14M deal | 02/06/2014 5:20 PM
NewsJonah Keri of Grantland reports that the Mariners and reliever Fernando Rodney have agreed to a two-year, $14 million contract.
Jonah Keri on Twitter
ImpactAccording to Keri, Rodney could earn up to $15 million with incentives. The 36-year-old wasn't nearly as dominant last year as he was in 2012, but he still finished with a 3.38 ERA and 82 strikeouts over 66 2/3 innings and notched 37 saves. His addition will likely push Danny Farquhar into a set-up role.
O's, M's, Mets interested in Fernando Rodney | 02/04/2014 3:55 PM
NewsBob Nightengale of USA Today reports that the Orioles, Mariners, and Mets are interested in free agent closer Fernando Rodney.
Bob Nightengale on Twitter
ImpactAssuming Bobby Parnell is healthy, Rodney might have a better chance to close with the Orioles and Mariners. The veteran right-hander posted a 3.38 ERA and 82/36 K/BB ratio in 66 2/3 innings last season with the Rays while going 37-for-45 in save opportunities.
Mets unlikely to sign RP Fernando Rodney | 02/03/2014 8:05 PM
NewsAccording to Newsday's Marc Carig, the Mets are unlikely to sign free agent reliever Fernando Rodney.
Marc Carig on Twitter
ImpactThe Mets are in the market for a late-inning reliever to provide insurance for Bobby Parnell, who is on his way back from neck surgery. But it sounds like they'll aim lower than Rodney. Kevin Gregg, Ryan Madson and Joel Hanrahan are among the more realistic possibilities for New York. Rodney is drawing interest from the Orioles and Mariners.
Report: Mets still seeking late-inning arm | 02/03/2014 5:28 PM
NewsAccording to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, the Mets "have allotted dollars" to add a closer type.
ESPN New York
ImpactThe Mets signed Kyle Farnsworth to a minor league contract Monday, but they are still looking for some insurance for Bobby Parnell, who is coming off neck surgery. Rubin's source believes Fernando Rodney may be at the top of the Mets' list, but Kevin Gregg, Ryan Madson and Joel Hanrahan are among the other possibilities.
Yankees considering relief options | 02/02/2014 10:28 AM
NewsNick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that "there's a feeling" the Yankees "may pluck (Fernando) Rodney, or someone of his ilk."
ImpactThe idea would be to provide some protection for David Robertson in case he "breaks down or isn't up to the task." It's not a surprise, as the Yanks were connected to Joaquin Benoit earlier this winter before he eventually signed with the Padres. Rodney is also drawing interest from the Mariners, Orioles and Mets.
Orioles, Mets still in on Fernando Rodney | 01/28/2014 8:20 PM
NewsChris Cotillo of MLBDailyDish.com reports that the Orioles and Mets are "still in" on Fernando Rodney.
Chris Cotillo on Twitter
ImpactHowever, he adds that "it'll be a while" until Rodney signs. Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports reported earlier Tuesday that the Mariners are also showing interest in Rodney. The former Ray posted a 3.38 ERA and 82/36 K/BB ratio in 66 2/3 innings last season.
M's interested in reliever Fernando Rodney | 01/28/2014 5:30 PM
NewsTim Brown of Yahoo! Sports confirms that the Mariners are interested in free agent Fernando Rodney.
Tim Brown on Twitter
ImpactThe Mets and Orioles are also thought to have serious interest. Rodney, 36, posted a cool 3.38 ERA and 82/36 K/BB ratio in 66 2/3 innings last season as the Rays' closer, averaging a career-high 96.5 mph on his fastball. He would likely unseat Danny Farquhar as the closer in Seattle if the M's win the bidding.
Mariners could be in play for Fernando Rodney | 01/24/2014 6:03 PM
NewsAccording to Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish, the Mariners were involved in the bidding for Fernando Rodney during the winter meetings, and could still be in play for the free agent reliever.
Chris Cotillo on Twitter
ImpactThe Indians were also in the mix at the time, but have since inked John Axford to be their stopper. The Orioles have been linked to Rodney as well and have an opening in the ninth inning, while the Mets reportedly kicked the tires as well to see if his price has come down yet. Should the M's get in the bidding, he would represent an upgrade over incumbant Danny Farquhar.
Mets asking if Rodney's price has dropped | 01/24/2014 5:27 PM
NewsJoel Sherman of the New York Post reports that the Mets have "reached out to many relievers, including (Fernando) Rodney," to see "if prices have fallen way down."
Joel Sherman on Twitter
ImpactOne executive said of the Mets' inquires that he "wouldn't classify as anything hot" at the moment. Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com was the first to report that the Mets have had talks with Rodney's representatives, but it sounds like they're just checking in and certainly nothing is close at the moment.
Mets talking to reliever Fernando Rodney | 01/24/2014 2:28 PM
NewsAdam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com reports that Mets general manager Sandy Alderson "has been in dialogue" with Fernando Rodney's representatives.
ImpactRubin says the talks "are believed to be about the closer's role." Bobby Parnell's recovery from surgery to repair a herniated disk in his neck is going well, but the Mets pursued Grant Balfour and are now looking at Rodney, so clearly they're still uneasy about their ninth inning situation. Rodney held a 3.38 ERA and a career-high 28 percent strikeout rate in 2013.
O's haven't talked with Rodney in weeks | 01/23/2014 4:59 PM
NewsDan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun reports that the Orioles haven't had any dialogue with Fernando Rodney's agents in weeks.
Dan Connolly on Twitter
ImpactJonah Keri of Grantland.com reported Thursday afternoon that the Orioles and Rodney were moving closer to an agreement, but both Connolly and FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal are hearing otherwise. Still, Rodney is the best closer left on the market and the Orioles are unsettled in that area, so we wouldn't rule out something happening.
Report: O's closing in on deal with RP Rodney | 01/23/2014 2:43 PM
NewsJonah Keri of Grantland.com reported that the Orioles are moving closer to reaching a contract agreement with free agent reliever Fernando Rodney.
Jonah Keri on Twitter
Impact"O's expected to make 1 other significant move as well," Keri added cryptically. Now that Baltimore's former top target, Grant Balfour, has taken Rodney's old closing job in Tampa Bay, an obvious marriage seems likely to consummate shortly. Baltimore seeks to patch the ninth-inning hole created when the club dealt Jim Johnson to the A's, who wanted to replace Balfour and thus began the closer's musical chairs scramble that is nearing song's end.
Hickey wouldn't be surprised by Rodney return | 01/04/2014 10:55 PM
NewsRays pitching coach Jim Hickey "wouldn't be surprised" if Fernando Rodney returned to the team, according to Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times.
Tampa Bay Times
ImpactOf course, Hickey isn't general manager Andrew Friedman, so what would and wouldn't surprise him doesn't carry a ton of weight. But it does speak to Rodney's situation, as the right-hander is one of the few closers who hasn't found a landing spot as of yet. The Rays are also one of the few teams still in search of a closer, so a reunion between the two sides isn't a far-fetched scenario.
Orioles aggressively pursuing Fernando Rodney | 12/21/2013 4:39 PM
NewsThe Orioles are aggressively trying to land Fernando Rodney, a source tells Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish.
Chris Cotillo on Twitter
ImpactIn the wake of their deal with Grant Balfour going sour, the O's seem intent on getting their closer situation shored up quickly. Rodney is one of the last remaining closers on the market and, depending on how teams view Balfour, could wind up with multiple suitors bidding for his services. The Yankees, Mariners and Rays have also been mentioned as possible destinations for the 36-year-old.
Orioles reaching out to Fernando Rodney | 12/20/2013 5:34 PM
NewsYahoo! Sports' Tim Brown reports that the Orioles have "reached out" to Fernando Rodney's agent, Dan Lozano, following the collapse of the Grant Balfour deal.
Tim Brown on Twitter
ImpactDan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun also reported earlier Friday that Rodney appeared to be next on the Orioles' closer wish list. Assuming the O's don't find anything they don't like on Rodney's physical, it's possible something could come together quickly between them and the former Rays closer.
Orioles turning attention to Fernando Rodney? | 12/20/2013 12:49 PM
NewsDan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun hears that the Orioles "seem to be turning their attention" to Fernando Rodney with Grant Balfour's deal "in limbo and likely collapsing."
Dan Connolly on Twitter
ImpactBalfour's two-year, $15 million contract was supposed to be announced by now, but concerns over his shoulder have left the deal as a longshot at this point. Connolly notes that the O's had discussions earlier this offseason about Rodney, "but negotiations didn't progress." Rodney blew eight saves last season for the Rays but has converted 85 of 95 over the last two years.
Yankees could become interested in Rodney | 12/15/2013 9:12 PM
NewsKen Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports that Fernando Rodney could emerge as an option for the Yankees.
Ken Rosenthal on Twitter
ImpactThe Yankees appear set to begin the season with David Robertson as their closer, but have kicked the tires on a couple of veteran options this offseason just in case. With Rodney's list of suitors dwindling, he could become a cost effective option to help strengthen the back of the bullpen.
Rodney wants $10M/year on multi-year pact | 12/12/2013 8:56 AM
NewsCBS Sports' Jon Heyman hears that Fernando Rodney wants at least $10 million per season on a multi-year contract.
Jon Heyman on Twitter
ImpactHeyman writes that he's looking for at least two years and maybe three. Rodney wasn't nearly as effective this year as he was in 2012, but he still finished with a 3.38 ERA and 37 saves while averaging a career-high 11.1 K/9. The Mariners are known to have interest.
Mariners showing interest in Fernando Rodney | 12/10/2013 12:48 PM
NewsJon Morosi of FOX Sports hears from sources that the Mariners are interested in reliever Fernando Rodney.
Jon Morosi on Twitter
ImpactMorosi adds that Rodney has a good relationship with recently-hired manager Lloyd McClendon from their days with the Tigers. Rodney finished 2013 with a 3.38 ERA and a career-high 28 percent strikeout rate. The right-hander turns 37 in March but it appears he still has gas left in the tank.
Indians to look at Rodney, Wilson for closer | 11/12/2013 4:07 PM
NewsPaul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that Indians general manager Chris Antonetti is scheduled to talk to agent Dan Lozano about two of his clients, closers Fernando Rodney and Brian Wilson.
Cleveland Plain Dealer
ImpactThe Indians released Chris Perez after the season and are considering Cody Allen and Bryan Shaw as in-house replacements, but they are also willing to look to the free agent market. Rodney wasn't nearly as untouchable in 2013, posting a 3.38 ERA while blowing eight saves. Wilson posted a 0.66 ERA in 18 appearances with the Dodgers this year after making it back from Tommy John surgery. Both have a good chance to land multi-year contracts in free agency.
Rays interested in re-signing Fernando Rodney | 10/11/2013 10:40 AM
NewsThe Rays are interested in re-signing impending free agent Fernando Rodney.
ImpactRodney's up-and-down 2013 could make his price low enough to where the club has a shot at retaining him. After an historic 2012 season, Rodney posted a 3.38 ERA and 1.34 WHIP while blowing nine saves this year. "I know Fernando is willing to sacrifice some money to come back," Joel Peralta said. "We've talked about it. We'll just see what they offer or how many offers they got on the market, who knows. I think he's going to get better offers somewhere else."
Rodney closes out crucial Rays' victory | 09/29/2013 5:16 PM
NewsFernando Rodney worked 1 1/3 scoreless innings Sunday to earn his 37th -- and most important -- save of the season against the Blue Jays.
ImpactAs always, Rodney made things interesting. With Tampa Bay's season hanging in the balance, Rodney entered the eighth inning of a 7-4 game and immediately coughed up two singles and a walk, which scored a pair of inherited runners. Down to a 7-6 lead, the veteran closer allowed a leadoff single to Adam Lind in the ninth before he settled down and retired three straight. Rodney is 37-for-45 in save conversions and owns a 3.38 ERA and 1.34 ERA over 68 appearances.
Fernando Rodney works perfect ninth inning | 09/13/2013 11:12 PM
NewsFernando Rodney worked a perfect ninth inning against the Twins on Friday, earning his 35th save of the season.
ImpactRodney was tasked with protecting a three-run advantage, and needed just 13 pitches to dispatch of the Twins in order. He still owns a disappointing 3.41 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 79/34 K/BB ratio on the season.
Rodney works perfect ninth, earns 33rd save | 09/08/2013 8:57 PM
NewsFernando Rodney worked a perfect ninth inning against the Mariners on Sunday, protecting a three-run lead and earning his 33rd save of the season.
ImpactIt's been a rollercoaster season for Rodney, but fantasy owners can still take solace in the fact that he's earned 33 saves on the season. That's despite a 3.59 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and eight blown saves along the way.
Rodney earns 32nd save with perfect inning | 09/05/2013 1:23 AM
NewsFernando Rodney worked a perfect ninth inning against the Angels on Wednesday, preserving a two-run lead and earning his 32nd save of the season.
ImpactRodney struck out the first two batters he faced and induced a weak pop fly to end the affair. He looked like vintage 2012 Rodney, pumping high-90s cheese past impotent batters. Owners that over-drafted Rodney based on his 0.60 ERA campaign got what they paid for. Rodney's ERAs in the five previous seasons were 4.26, 4.91, 4.40, 4.24 and 4.50, respectively. In other words, a 3.65 ERA and 1.39 WHIP shouldn't be viewed as a disappointment.
Rodney suffers eighth blown save against Rays | 08/27/2013 11:59 PM
NewsFernando Rodney allowed two runs -- one earned -- against the Rays on Tuesday for his eighth blown save of the season.
ImpactA Desmond Jennings error preceded a two-run double by Erick Aybar, so Rodney doesn't deserve all the blame for the meltdown. He'd converted three straight saves and hadn't allowed a run in his previous seven appearances before Tuesday, and although he's not the pitcher he was in 2012, it's likely that Tuesday was just a misstep for the 36-year-old.
Fernando Rodney takes blown save, loss | 08/10/2013 2:15 AM
NewsFernando Rodney blew a save and took a loss in spectacular fashion Friday, giving up four runs -- three earned -- while getting just one out in the ninth against the Dodgers.
ImpactAfter entering with a 6-3 lead, Rodney gave up a single, a triple, a double and a double to tie the game at 6. He then intentionally walked Yasiel Puig to set up a double play with Jerry Hairston Jr. coming up. As it turned out, he got a perfect comebacker hit right to him, only he missed the target completely and threw the ball into center field, ending the contest. Technically, it's Rodney's second straight blown save, though the other one was more Joel Peralta's mess than his. Before that, he hadn't blown a save since May 25.
Rodney blows sixth save of the season | 08/08/2013 1:29 AM
NewsFernando Rodney blew his sixth save of the season in Wednesday's loss to Arizona.
ImpactTampa Bay nursed an 8-7 lead when Rodney relieved Joel Peralta with runners on the corners and one out in the eighth inning. Rodney walked Adam Eaton and allowed a two-run single to Martin Prado that ensured victory for the Snakes. The Tampa Bay closer performed poorly earlier this season, but he's pitched great since late May. Rodney has only been charged with an earned run in one appearance since June 15.
Rodney earns 27th save with perfect inning | 08/04/2013 7:11 PM
NewsFernando Rodney worked a perfect inning against the Giants on Sunday, preserving a one-run lead and earning his 27th save of the season.
ImpactHe struck out one in the 11-pitch outing. Rodney has fallen off greatly since his historic 2012 season, but he's been hot recently. The right-hander has given up a run in just one of his last 18 appearances since June 15 to slash his ERA from 5.40 to 3.74.
Fernando Rodney escapes with 23rd save | 07/20/2013 4:32 PM
NewsFernando Rodney allowed a pair of baserunners in the ninth inning against the Blue Jays on Saturday, but was able to escape with his 23rd save of the season.
ImpactRodney allowed an unearned run, and let the Jays get the game-winning run in scoring position before getting Adam Lind to fly out to end the game. The embattled closer now owns a 3.70 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 57/25 K/BB ratio in 41 1/3 innings on the season.
Rodney slams door on White Sox to earn save | 07/06/2013 10:22 PM
NewsFernando Rodney worked a perfect inning against the White Sox on Saturday, preserving a three-run lead and earning his 19th save of the season.
ImpactRodney struck out one in his inning of work, needing just 15 pitches to dispatch of the three hitters he faced. While he's been incredibly shaky on the season, he appears to have turned the corner, as he's been unscored upon in each of his last eight outings.
Rodney tallies 15th save, Rays beat Yankees | 06/23/2013 5:23 PM
NewsFernando Rodney tallied his 15th save of the year Sunday in the Rays' 3-1 defeat of the Yankees.
ImpactRodney struck out all three batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth, earning his first save since June 15. He has an ugly 4.99 ERA and 1.47 WHIP in 30 2/3 total innings this year but has been getting better lately.
Fernando Rodney gives up two runs | 06/11/2013 12:57 AM
NewsFernando Rodney gave up two runs in his second inning of work Monday against the Red Sox.
ImpactRodney pitched a scoreless ninth in a tie game, but he walked two and gave up a two-run single in the 10th. The Rays let him off the hook with two runs of their own in the bottom of the 10th, so Rodney didn't take a loss. They were the first runs he had given up in eight appearances, so his job is still quite a bit more secure than it was a couple of weeks ago.
Fernando Rodney converts 12th save | 06/05/2013 10:17 PM
NewsFernando Rodney nailed down his 12th save of the season with a scoreless ninth in Wednesday's win over the Tigers.
ImpactRodney issued a leadoff walk and a one-out single, but he escaped unscathed with the help of a couple strikeouts. The crooked-hatted closer is now unscored upon in his last six appearances and has allowed just three baserunners over that time.
Rodney not available for Friday's game | 05/31/2013 6:09 PM
NewsRays manager Joe Maddon said that Fernando Rodney is not available for Friday's game against the Indians.
Roger Mooney on Twitter
ImpactRodney pitched in all four games this week against the Marlins, so it's not surprise that Maddon wants to give him a breather. Joel Peralta and Jake McGee are also getting rested, so Maddon would clearly love to see a big performance from Matt Moore.
Fernando Rodney records 11th save | 05/31/2013 12:04 AM
NewsFernando Rodney pitched a perfect ninth inning Thursday for second save in as many days.
ImpactRodney has pitched four straight days against the Marlins, throwing 3 1/3 hitless innings for a win and the two saves. Unfortunately, he'll have to resume facing major league teams now as the Rays travel to Cleveland. He's probably due Friday off regardless, which could lead to a save chance for Joel Peralta.
Rodney picks up 10th save, Rays beat Marlins | 05/29/2013 9:38 PM
NewsFernando Rodney recorded the final out of the game to earn his 10th save of the season Wednesday against the Marlins.
ImpactIt was Rodney's third-straight day of work, but he was only asked to get one out in locking down the Rays' 3-1 win. It's now three consecutive scoreless outings for the closer, and the fact that he got the call again Wednesday, regardless of the relative ease of the assignment, is another vote of confidence for the right-hander. For better or worse, he seems safe in his role as Rays closer for the near future.
Rodney tosses scoreless inning versus Marlins | 05/27/2013 7:05 PM
NewsFernando Rodney tossed a scoreless inning in Monday's win over the Marlins.
ImpactRodney entered the ninth inning with a four-run lead, so it was a non-save situation. He issued a one-out walk to Marcell Ozuna, but was able to get Rob Brantly and Justin Ruggiano to strike out swinging to end it. Rays manager Joe Maddon is trying his hardest to get Rodney right, but we're not fully convinced yet. Keep Joel Peralta around as a handcuff.
Rays' Maddon sticking with Rodney at closer | 05/25/2013 8:58 PM
NewsRays manager Joe Maddon said after Saturday's blown save that he's still confident in closer Fernando Rodney.
Roger Mooney on Twitter
ImpactThe blown save was Rodney's fifth of the year and his second in two games after blowing just two all of last season. The right-hander now has a 6.05 ERA, and while votes of confidence are nice, they fade quickly when results don't follow. Rodney remains the closer for now, but the leash is likely very short. Joel Peralta is a must-have.
Rodney blows fifth save, Rays fall to Yankees | 05/25/2013 8:27 PM
NewsFernando Rodney blew his fifth save of the season Saturday in the Rays' loss to the Yankees.
ImpactRodney entered the game with Tampa Bay leading by two. He got Ichiro Suzuki to fly out and fanned Jayson Nix, but Lyle Overbay drew a walk, Brennan Boesch doubled and Brett Gardner singled. That all netted the Bombers two runs and they broke through to win it in the 11th. Rodney is a mess right now. Joel Peralta needs to be owned in all standard fantasy leagues.
Rays sticking with Fernando Rodney at closer | 05/24/2013 4:54 PM
NewsRays manager Joe Maddon said Friday that he's sticking with Fernando Rodney at closer.
Marc Topkin on Twitter
ImpactIn fact, Maddon said that there hasn't even been a discussion about a possible change. Rodney has a 5.40 ERA to go along with four blown saves and 17 walks in 18 1/3 innings this season, but he is going to get every chance to pitch out of his funk. Joel Peralta would be the likely alternative if he continues to falter.
Fernando Rodney blows save, gets pulled | 05/22/2013 7:41 PM
NewsFernando Rodney took his fourth blown save in giving up a Jose Bautista solo homer Wednesday against the Jays.
ImpactThat alone would hardly be grounds for termination. Rays manager Joe Maddon, though, showed zero confidence in Rodney when he pulled him in favor of Joel Peralta after Adam Lind's one-out walk. If Rodney loses his job over this one, it'd most likely be a short-term move; he's get every opportunity to win it right back if he shows better command. Peralta would be in line for saves in his place.
Rodney earns five-out save as Rays top Jays | 05/21/2013 10:37 PM
NewsFernando Rodney recorded five outs to pick up his ninth save of the season on Tuesday.
ImpactIt was Rodney's second save since his meltdown last Thursday, but it wasn't without incident. Rodney allowed a ground-rule double to Colby Rasmus in the ninth and he scored on a wild pitch, cutting the Rays' lead to one. But after a walk, Rodney struck out Melky Cabrera to end it. His job as Rays closer looks to be safe.
Rodney notches save with perfect inning | 05/19/2013 5:14 PM
NewsFernando Rodney bounced back from last Thursday's disastrous outing with a 1-2-3 ninth on Sunday against the Orioles to notch his eighth save of the season.
ImpactRodney didn't record a strikeout, but he got a flyout and a couple harmless groundouts in the outing. His control has waned at times this season, but Rodney has received a vote of confidence from manager Joe Maddon and will continue to see the save chances in Tampa.
Fernando Rodney likely unavailable Friday | 05/17/2013 6:10 PM
NewsRays manager Joe Maddon said that Fernando Rodney will likely be unavailable Friday.
Marc Topkin on Twitter
ImpactRodney threw 35 pitches during his blow save Thursday, so Maddon would like to stay from him. Joel Peralta is the most likely option to fill in and could eventually take the closer job if Rodney continues to look like, well, the old Rodney.
Maddon on Rodney: 'not really concerned yet' | 05/17/2013 10:45 AM
NewsRays manager Joe Maddon said he's "not really concerned yet" about Fernando Rodney.
Tampa Bay Times
Impact"I'm not really concerned yet," said Maddon. "I'm not running away from Fernando. We'll get him right." Rodney walked four and allowed a bases-clearing double to the Red Sox' Will Middlebrooks to blow a save on Thursday. Though he's struck out 23 over 15 1/3 innings, Rodney's 15 walks already match his total from last season. It sounds like he has a little more leash, but Rodney owners should pick up Joel Peralta just in case.
Fernando Rodney walks the park, blown save | 05/16/2013 11:07 PM
NewsFernando Rodney gave up three runs in the ninth to take his third blown save and his second loss Thursday against the Red Sox.
ImpactRodney walked three to load the bases, got ahead of Will Middlebrooks 0-2 with two outs and then gave up a three-run double on a changeup left over the plate. Afterwards, he couldn't even be bothered to back up home plate. He was left in anyway, but only long enough to walk his fourth hitter of the night. Rodney's command has been an issue all year long, and he had no idea where his fastball was going tonight. His changeup was still working, and it was almost good enough to get him a scoreless inning and a save anyway. Still, he's officially become a problem for the Rays. He probably won't be pulled from the closer's role, but it's something Joe Maddon needs to think about. Joel Peralta would be next in line for saves.
Rodney picks up seventh save vs. Red Sox | 05/14/2013 11:14 PM
NewsFernando Rodney struck out the side in the ninth inning to earn his seventh save of the season against the Red Sox on Tuesday.
ImpactRodney has struck out 21 batters in 14 2/3 innings this season, and he looks to be fully past his early-season struggles. He's now posted four-straight scoreless appearances since his last blown save on May 6. He won't approach his historic 2012 numbers, but Rodney is still one of the better closers in the league.
Fernando Rodney bounces back to earn 5th save | 05/10/2013 10:58 PM
NewsFernando Rodney bounced back nicely from Monday's blown save attempt, slamming the door on the Padres on Friday to earn his fifth save of the season.
ImpactHe did allow a walk in his inning of work, but struck out Nick Hundley and Everth Cabrera to end the threat. He's now converted five of his seven save chances on the season, while posting a 4.26 ERA and 16/10 K/BB ratio over 12 2/3 innings. Despite any recent struggles, he's in no danger of losing his job anytime soon.
Fernando Rodney gives up homer, blows save | 05/06/2013 11:01 PM
NewsFernando Rodney took his second blown save and first loss after giving up J.P. Arencibia's two-run homer in the ninth Monday against the Blue Jays.
ImpactIt was the second homer Rodney has allowed, matching his total from 2012. He's now given up six earned runs this year after allowing a total of five in 74 2/3 innings last season. Still, it's not like he's throwing badly with his 12 strikeouts in 10 1/3 innings. His command certainly hasn't been what it was last year, but his stuff remains plenty good.
Rodney converts 3rd save, Rays shut out Yanks | 04/24/2013 10:10 PM
NewsFernando Rodney recorded the final two outs to notch his third save of the season Wednesday against the Yankees.
ImpactIt's been a rough start to the season for Rodney after his historic 2012, but he escaped Wednesday night without harm. After entering and allowing an immediate single to Ichiro Suzuki, Rodney got Robinson Cano to ground out and Travis Hafner to pop out to end the game. Despite his early inconsistencies, Rodney has little competition for his job and should get better as the season goes on. No cause for concern here.
Rodney gets second save in win over A's | 04/20/2013 10:05 PM
NewsFernando Rodney earned his second save of the season in Saturday night's win over the A's.
ImpactThe Rays are off to a slow start this year, so Rodney hasn't been all that busy. He should start getting more chances soon and remains a solid fantasy option at closer.
Fernando Rodney strikes out the side | 02/23/2013 5:47 PM
NewsPicking right up where he left off, Fernando Rodney struck out all three Pirates he faced in Saturday's outing.
ImpactRodney amassed the lowest ERA in major league history last season, a ridiculous 0.60 mark. Despite his previous history of mediocrity, we trust him enough to rank him as an elite fantasy closer this year.
Rays, Rodney not talking contract extension | 02/13/2013 11:09 AM
NewsFernando Rodney said Wednesday that there have been no talks with the Rays about a contract extension.
Marc Topkin on Twitter
ImpactThere were a couple recent reports that the two sides were close to an extension, but Rodney chalked that up to a misunderstanding with reporters. Still, he would be open to an extension if the Rays approached him. The 35-year-old had his $2.5 million club option picked up over the winter, so he's currently due to become a free agent following the 2013 season.
Rodney confident he'll get contract extension | 02/01/2013 8:17 PM
NewsFernando Rodney expressed confidence on Friday that he'll finalize a contract extension with the Rays in the near future.
ImpactRodney added that he's already had discussions with management, and that he expects a deal to be finalized this month. The 35-year-old closer is coming off one of the most surprising and utterly dominant seasons in major league history, posting a 0.60 ERA, 0.78 WHIP and 76/15 K/BB ratio while converting 48 saves. Fantasy owners seem to have bought in as well, as he's being selected as a top-five closer in early drafts.
