The trade deadline has passed and closer Joaquin Benoit is still a member of the San Diego Padres. | 07/31/2014 6:11 PM
NewsThe trade deadline has passed and closer Joaquin Benoit is still a member of the San Diego Padres.
ImpactA trade would have landed him in a set-up role, so this is good news for his fantasy value. Benoit has a 1.88 ERA and a 0.84 WHIP this season and he's closed out both save chances since Huston Street was traded.
Tigers, Indians, Pirates are pursuing Benoit | 07/20/2014 10:24 PM
NewsJon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that the Tigers, Indians and Pirates are among the most ardent pursuers of Padres right-handed reliever Joaquin Benoit.
ImpactThe newly-minted closer for the Padres could be viewed as either a closer, or a setup man by the teams looking to acquire him, and his fantasy value is intimately tied to whichever role he lands in. After the Huston Street trade, the Padres are in a good position and don't have to deal Benoit if they aren't enamored with the potential return package.
Joaquin Benoit takes loss in ninth | 07/19/2014 1:26 AM
NewsJoaquin Benoit took a loss Friday in his first appearance after the Huston Street trade.
ImpactBenoit gave up a run after entering a tie game in the top of the ninth. He also gave up three runs in his next to last appearance prior to the break after going almost two months without being scored upon. Hopefully, it's just a couple of blips for the Padres' new closer. He's worth owning in all formats.
Tigers interested in reunion with RP Benoit | 07/02/2014 11:41 AM
NewsUSA Today's Bob Nightengale reports that the Padres are "letting teams know" that Joaquin Benoit is available and the Tigers are among the clubs that are "quite interested."
Bob Nightengale on Twitter
ImpactBenoit, of course, spent the previous three seasons with the Tigers before inking a two-year, $15.5 million contract with the Padres last winter. He's still owed roughly $12.5 million of that when you include a buyout of his 2016 option, which is a sum the Tigers weren't interested in paying over the offseason. However, they've had their issues in the bullpen and might consider Benoit now. The 36-year-old boasts a 1.30 ERA, 0.72 WHIP and 39/7 K/BB ratio over 34 2/3 relief innings for the Padres this season.
Joaquin Benoit records first save | 04/19/2014 11:33 PM
NewsWith Huston Street getting the day off, Joaquin Benoit pitched a perfect ninth for his first save Saturday against the Giants.
ImpactBenoit allowed two runs in his second appearance of the year, but he's given up just one hit over six scoreless innings in his other six outings. He should be one of baseball's top setup men for fantasy purposes this year.
Joaquin Benoit outstanding against D'Backs | 03/09/2014 11:09 PM
NewsJoaquin Benoit had another outstanding Cactus League performance against the Diamondbacks on Sunday, fanning all three hitters that he faced.
ImpactThe 36-year-old has now tossed four scoreless innings this spring, allowing just two hits and posting a terrific 8/0 K/BB ratio. With the oft-injured Huston Street being the only barrier between Benoit and save chances in San Diego, he makes for a nice option for those speculating for saves in the later rounds.
Benoit strikes out two in an inning | 03/06/2014 5:11 PM
NewsJoaquin Benoit struck out two in his only inning of work against the Rangers on Thursday.
ImpactBenoit will be setting up for Huston Street. However, considering Street's injury history in recent years, Benoit could still find himself in a few save opportunities.
Padres sign Joaquin Benoit to two year deal | 12/28/2013 5:10 PM
NewsPadres signed RHP Joaquin Benoit to a two-year, $15.5 million contract.
ImpactThe deal also includes an $8 million vesting option for 2016 if he finishes 55 games during the 2015 season. The 36-year-old right-hander excelled as the Tigers closer during the 2013 season and should join Huston Street to form a formidable duo at the back of the Padres bullpen.
Benoit and Padres have contract agreement | 12/18/2013 10:45 AM
NewsJeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports reports that the Padres and free agent reliever Joaquin Benoit have agreed on contract terms.
Jeff Passan on Twitter
ImpactThe deal is awaiting a physical. We'll soon find out if the terms match the two-year, $14 million offer Passan reported that San Diego offered last week (CBS' Jon Heyman reported Wednesday morning that the pact is actually worth $15 million over two years). This move evaporates just about all of Benoit's mixed league fantasy value, but he does become one of MLB's best eighth-inning pitchers (again) and a highly-intriguing reliever for NL-only owners to consider in the latter stages of their drafts. Remember that closer Huston Street is about as brittle as they come and San Diego's spacious Petco Park is a nice thematic fit. Benoit collected a 2.01 ERA and 73/22 K/BB ratio over 67 innings as Detroit's closer in 2013.
Report: Benoit and Padres nearing a contract | 12/18/2013 8:48 AM
NewsESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports that talks are "heating up" between the Padres and free agent reliever Joaquin Benoit.
Jerry Crasnick on Twitter
ImpactJeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports reported earlier this month that both San Diego and Cleveland had offered Benoit identical two-year, $14 million contracts. Benoit could have closed if he'd accepted the Indians' agreement before that team moved on to John Axford, but it's hard to argue with taking the same amount of money to set the table for somebody else (Huston Street) and live in San Diego. This moves really hurts Benoit's mixed league fantasy value, but he's good enough to retain NL-only relevancy. The veteran reliever put up a 2.01 ERA and 73/22 K/BB ratio over 67 innings with the Tigers in 2013.
Indians expect to sign closer in near future | 12/15/2013 7:20 PM
NewsIndians general manager Mark Shapiro indicated Sunday during an interview with MLB Network Radio on Sirius XM, that he expects to sign a closer soon.
Cleveland Plain Dealer
ImpactThe Tribe is known to have an outstanding offer on the table to Joaquin Benoit, and have expressed interest in John Axford, Grant Balfour and Fernando Rodney as well. Indians skipper Terry Francona has made it clear that he would like a veteran presence with closing experience at the back of his bullpen, with Cody Allen and Bryan Shaw remaining in their familiar setup roles.
Padres the favorites to land Joaquin Benoit | 12/12/2013 6:28 PM
NewsESPN's Buster Olney reports that the Padres are the "front runner" over the Indians to sign Joaquin Benoit.
Buster Olney on Twitter
ImpactJeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports has reported that both teams have offered a two-year, $14 million deal. Benoit would seem to have a better chance of closing with the Indians than the Padres, but he must just like the San Diego weather better. The veteran reliever put up a 2.01 ERA and 73/22 K/BB ratio over 67 innings with the Tigers in 2013.
Report: Padres, Indians in on Joaquin Benoit | 12/12/2013 3:04 PM
NewsJeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports reports that the Padres and Indians are in on Joaquin Benoit.
Jeff Passan on Twitter
ImpactBoth teams are offering two years and $14 million, though Passan hears from a Padres source that the club might be willing to add a third year option. That would be a lot of money for a set-up man, but San Diego's closer Huston Street doesn't have the best health record.
Padres making strong push for Joaquin Benoit | 12/12/2013 12:55 PM
NewsFOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Padres are making a "strong push" to sign free agent reliever Joaquin Benoit.
Ken Rosenthal on Twitter
ImpactIt's an odd fit, as the Padres already have a closer with Huston Street and Benoit is looking for closer money ($7-10 million per season) in free agency. The 36-year-old is drawing interest from multiple teams, including the Indians, Cubs, Mariners and Yankees.
Benoit seeking $7-10 million per season | 12/12/2013 8:28 AM
NewsESPN's Buster Olney reports that Joaquin Benoit is seeking $7-10 million per season.
Buster Olney on twitter
ImpactIt's not an unreasonable request after Benoit saved a career-high 24 games with the Tigers this past season while posting a 2.01 ERA and 73/22 K/BB ratio over 67 innings. Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports reported late Wednesday that teams believe the Indians, Cubs, Mariners, Padres and Yankees are his most likely landing spots.
Five teams believed to be in lead for Benoit | 12/12/2013 12:06 AM
NewsYahoo Sports' Jeff Passan hears teams believe the Indians, Cubs, Mariners, Padres and Yankees are the most likely destinations for Joaquin Benoit.
Jeff Passan on Twitter
ImpactFour of those teams have a need for a closer, and the Padres could use some insurance for the oft-injured Huston Street. The Orioles and Rockies have also checked in on the 36-year-old. The Tigers didn't seem to believe in the right-hander as a closing option, but it seems there are plenty of teams that do.
Orioles in discussions with Benoit, Axford | 12/11/2013 7:22 PM
NewsA source tells Jon Morosi of FOX Sports that the Orioles are still in discussions with Joaquin Benoit and John Axford.
Jon Morosi on Twitter
ImpactThe O's have a vacancy at closer after dealing Jim Johnson to the A's earlier this winter. The 36-year-old Benoit saved a career-high 24 games in 2013, posting a 2.01 ERA and 73/22 K/BB ratio over 67 innings with the Tigers. The Rockies, Yankees and Mariners, among others, have expressed interest in the right-hander in recent days as well.
Rockies in talks with reliever Joaquin Benoit | 12/11/2013 9:51 AM
NewsAccording to Jon Morosi of FOX Sports, the Rockies are in talks with free agent Joaquin Benoit.
Jon Morosi on Twitter
ImpactMorosi says the two sides "remain apart" on salary, but that could change as the winter rolls on. Benoit is also drawing interest from the Yankees, Mariners and a couple other teams. He was awful in the postseason but posted a 2.01 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 73/22 K/BB ratio across 67 innings of regular-season work for the Tigers in 2013.
Yankees considering reliever Joaquin Benoit | 12/10/2013 9:22 PM
NewsUSA Today's Bob Nightengale reports that the Yankees "have had lots of internal discussions" about Joaquin Benoit.
Bob Nightengale on Twitter
ImpactNightengale says the Yanks "would love to grab two relievers," and Benoit appears to be at or near the top of their list. It's unclear whether they'd allow him to compete with David Robertson for the closing job or if they'd view him more in a setup role. Benoit put up a 2.01 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 73/22 K/BB ratio in 67 innings of work for the Tigers in 2013.
Mariners interested in Joaquin Benoit | 12/08/2013 11:21 PM
NewsJon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that the Mariners are interested in free agent reliever Joaquin Benoit.
Jon Heyman on Twitter
ImpactThe Mariners are known to be seeking upgrades to their bullpen, and Benoit would certainly fit the bill. The 36-year-old seized the Tigers closer role this season, posting a 2.01 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 73/22 K/BB ratio in 67 innings of work. If signed, he'd presumably be the favorite for saves in front of Danny Farquhar.
Dombrowski: Benoit expected to leave Tigers | 12/04/2013 3:55 PM
NewsTigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said Wednesday that he expects Joaquin Benoit to sign elsewhere as a closer.
Chris Iott on Twitter
ImpactDombrowski was asked whether Benoit could return as a set-up man for Joe Nathan, but he figures to draw interest as a closer in free agency after he posted a 2.01 ERA, 21 saves and a 73/22 K/BB ratio over 67 innings this year. Of course, there are plenty of other closers on the market and only 30 jobs to go around, so he might have to lower his expectations.
Phillies expected to look at Benoit, Mujica | 11/09/2013 11:50 AM
NewsAccording to Jim Salisbury of CSN Philly, the Phillies will be in the market for an experienced setup man to operate in front of Jonathan Papelbon, with Joaquin Benoit and Edward Mujica as two probable options.
ImpactThe Phillies would prefer to have someone with closing experience work the eighth inning in front of Papelbon, to serve as an insurance policy. Both of these veteran right-handers were thrust into the full-time closer role for the first time in 2013, and passed with flying colors. Rather than meet the lofty asking prices on the free agent market though, they may be inclined to look within at Jake Diekman or B.J. Rosenburg to take on an increased role in the bullpen.
Tigers will pursue an experienced closer | 11/03/2013 6:49 PM
NewsTigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said Sunday that his team will pursue an experienced closer this Winter, with Joaquin Benoit in that mix as well.
Chris Iott on Twitter
ImpactThe Tigers bullpen was a major question mark for the Tigers in 2013 until Benoit assumed the closer's role an ran with it. With the Tigers declining their option on Jose Veras earlier in the week, there are several openings ready to be filled at the back end of the bullpen. Joe Nathan appears to be the best option on the free agent market, and is someone that the Tigers have shown interest in before.
Benoit earns save in Tigers' ALCS Gm. 1 win | 10/13/2013 12:23 AM
NewsJoaquin Benoit earned the save in the Tigers' ALCS Game 1 defeat of the Red Sox on Saturday.
ImpactBenoit actually spoiled what would have been the first combined no-hitter in postseason history when he allowed a Daniel Nava single with one out in the top of the ninth inning. But the Detroit closer erased that threat by retiring Stephen Drew and Xander Bogaerts. The Tigers are up 1-0 in the best-of-seven series.
Joaquin Benoit open to returning as setup man | 10/10/2013 8:58 PM
NewsJoaquin Benoit said Thursday that he's open to returning to the Tigers next season even if it means being a setup man.
ImpactAn impending free agency, Benoit has pitched well in a closer role, but the Tigers are grooming Bruce Rondon to take over the ninth inning eventually. "I think whatever decision they make is going to be great," Benoit said. "If they decide to go with me as a closer, I'm happy. If they decide to give me another chance and help him, being his setup man, I would be happy to." Even though he's 36, Benoit should be able to get a multi-year deal from someone.
Joaquin Benoit slams door on Athletics | 10/05/2013 1:04 AM
NewsJoaquin Benoit slammed the door on the Athletics in Game 1 of the ALDS on Friday, retiring all four hitters he faced to preserve a one-run advantage.
ImpactBenoit was called upon in the eighth inning to face Josh Donaldson with the tying run at first, and got him to pop out weakly. He then set down the heart of the A's order - Brandon Moss, Yoenis Cespedes and Josh Reddick - on strikes to end the evening.
Joaquin Benoit finally takes blown save | 09/24/2013 12:17 AM
NewsJoaquin Benoit took his first blown save of the season after giving up a Brian Dozier homer in the ninth Monday versus the Twins.
ImpactJim Leyland asked Benoit to get five outs in a one-run game after Jose Veras got into trouble in the eighth. He got the first two to finish the eighth, but Dozier's homer made it a 3-3 game in the ninth. Benoit had been a perfect 22-for-22 saving games this season and 31-for-31 without blowing a lead if you want to count his holds.

Joaquin Benoit slams door on Royals on Friday | 09/13/2013 9:58 PM
NewsJoaquin Benoit slammed the door on the Royals on Friday, coming on to work out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth inning and working a scoreless ninth to preserve a three-run lead and the Tigers victory.
ImpactBenoit has very quietly had himself a tremendous season at the back end of the Tigers bullpen, posting a 2.01 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 63/19 K/BB ratio over 58 1/3 innings. He's now successfully converted all 19 of his save chances on the season.
Benoit walks 3, allows grand slam to Aviles | 09/01/2013 4:31 PM
NewsJoaquin Benoit melted down on Sunday against the Indians, allowing four runs on three walks and a homer.
ImpactBenoit entered the top of the ninth attempting to sustain a 0-0 tie. Instead, he walked the first two batters he faced. Asdrubal Cabrera sacrificed both runners up one base, so Benoit intentionally walked Jason Kubel to set up Mike Aviles' grand slam. Benoit remains a perfect 17-for-17 in save chances, but he falls to 4-1 and his ERA jumped from 1.48 to 2.13. Entering the game, Benoit had allowed just two runs since the beginning of July.
Benoit gets 17th save as Tigers defeat Mets | 08/24/2013 7:27 PM
NewsJoaquin Benoit picked up his 17th save of the year Saturday in the Tigers' win over the Mets.
ImpactBenoit set down all three batters he faced in the ninth inning, tallying one strikeout. He has a stellar 1.54 ERA and 59 strikeouts in 52 2/3 total frames this season and should be an elite fantasy closer for the stretch run.
Joaquin Benoit gets five outs for 15th save | 08/14/2013 6:04 PM
NewsJoaquin Benoit got five outs in a two-run game for a save Wednesday against the White Sox.
ImpactAfter coming on with two on in the eighth, Benoit fanned Adam Dunn and Avisail Garcia to end the inning. He then allowed a single and a walk to start the ninth, but he got out of that, too. He's a perfect 15-for-15 in save chances, and he's allowed just one run since the beginning of July.
Benoit allows one run en route to 14th save | 08/08/2013 12:15 AM
NewsJoaquin Benoit allowed a run but struck out two to earn his 14th save of the season on Wednesday.
ImpactThe run was Benoit's first allowed since June 23, but it didn't lead to his first blown save of the year. Despite not being installed as the closer until the middle of the season, Benoit has been one of the best relievers in baseball this year. He now owns a 1.53 ERA with 55 strikeouts in 47 innings.
Joaquin Benoit slams door on White Sox | 08/02/2013 9:39 PM
NewsJoaquin Benoit slammed the door on the White Sox on Friday, protecting a one-run advantage and earning his 11th save of the season.
ImpactHe allowed a two-out walk to Alex Rios, but was able to get Adam Dunn to ground out to end the proceedings. He's been lights-out in the closer role for the Tigers, posting a 1.43 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 52/13 K/BB ratio in 44 innings on the season.

Benoit slams door on Phillies to earn save | 07/26/2013 9:38 PM
NewsJoaquin Benoit slammed the door on the Phillies on Friday, protecting a one-run advantage and earning his 10th save of the season.
ImpactBenoit, pitching on his 36th birthday, was promptly greeted by a leadoff single from Jimmy Rollins. Rollins proceeded to swipe second and third, but was stranded there when Darin Ruf grounded out to end the game. Benoit has been outstanding at the backend of the Tigers bullpen, posting a 1.50 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 52/12 K/BB ratio in his 42 innings.
Benoit tosses scoreless 9th to earn 9th save | 07/21/2013 6:13 PM
NewsIn his first appearance of the second half, Joaquin Benoit tossed a scoreless ninth inning to earn his ninth save against the Royals on Sunday.

Benoit strikes out two batters on Sunday | 07/14/2013 8:02 PM
NewsJoaquin Benoit struck out both batters he faced in a non-save situation Sunday against the Rangers.
ImpactBenoit has surrendered only two runs since May 27 and he's struck out at least one batter in every appearance since June 9. Detroit stubbornly took years to hand the closer's job to Benoit, but he's rewarded them handsomely for finely doing so. Benoit ends the first half 8-for-10 in save conversions to go with a 1.64 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 50/12 K/BB rate over 38 1/3 innings.
Benoit unavailable for Thursday's game | 07/04/2013 4:17 PM
NewsJoaquin Benoit is unavailable for Thursday's game against the Blue Jays.

ImpactBenoit has pitched each of the past three days, so Tigers manager Jim Leyland wants to give him a breather. Drew Smyly is also unavailable, so it's unclear who would get the ball in a potential save situation.
Benoit converts sixth save against Blue Jays | 07/02/2013 10:42 PM
NewsJoaquin Benoit pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his sixth save of the season on Tuesday.
ImpactBenoit didn't exactly go through the heart of the Blue Jays' order, as he faced Emilio Bonifacio, Munenori Kawasaki and Jose Reyes to pick up the save. He's now converted all six of his save opportunities and owns a 1.83 ERA and 1.02 WHIP through 34 1/3 innings. It took the Tigers a while to give him the job, but he's got the ability to run with it.
Leyland hints that Benoit is Detroit's closer | 06/20/2013 4:00 PM
NewsTigers manager Jim Leyland said Thursday that he'll lean toward Joaquin Benoit for save opportunities.
Jason Beck on Twitter
Impact"I'm not naming anybody closer," Leyland told reporters. "I'm just saying if Benoit was available right now, I would try to close with him." Benoit has registered a stellar 1.80 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 35/9 K/BB ratio across 30 innings this season out of the Detroit bullpen. Valverde, meanwhile, has a 5.59 ERA through 19 1/3 frames. Benoit needs to be owned in all standard fantasy leagues.
Benoit earns fourth save as Tigers top Twins | 06/16/2013 5:00 PM
NewsJoaquin Benoit earned his fourth save of the season Sunday as the Tigers beat the Twins 5-2.
ImpactJose Valverde has been shaky lately so Tigers manager Jim Leyland decided to give this one to Benoit, who entered the game in the eighth inning and closed it out with 1 1/3 scoreless frames. Benoit remains a solid stash in standard mixed fantasy leagues.
Joaquin Benoit gets save Sunday | 06/09/2013 3:52 PM
NewsJoaquin Benoit recorded his third save of the season with a scoreless inning in Sunday's win over the Indians.
ImpactWith Jose Valverde having pitched three days in a row, Benoit was called upon in the ninth and responded with a two-strikeout scoreless frame. Valverde still has some leash, but Benoit is the guy to own for saves in Detroit if Papa Grande falters.
Benoit hasn't allowed a run since April 27 | 05/17/2013 2:30 AM
NewsJoaquin Benoit hasn't allowed a run since April 27.
ImpactOne of the league's most underrated relievers, Benoit's career took off when he was no longer asked to start. Unfortunately, he's never been given an opportunity to close. Despite having clearly been Detroit's best bullpen option over the last three years, he's notched just six saves when Jose Valverde has needed a break. Benoit owns a 1.50 ERA and 0.94 WHIP through 18 innings. In holds leagues, he's an asset.
Joaquin Benoit records second save | 04/29/2013 10:36 PM
NewsWith Jose Valverde unavailable, Joaquin Benoit got one out for his second save Monday against the Twins.
ImpactDrew Smyly did the hard work, getting two outs in the eighth and two in the ninth against the heart of the order before Benoit induced a groundout from Trevor Plouffe. The Tigers went to Benoit tonight because they didn't want Valverde pitching three straight days.
Joaquin Benoit gets save in 14th | 04/18/2013 2:56 AM
NewsAfter Brayan Pena's RBI groundout in the top of the 14th, Joaquin Benoit pitched a scoreless bottom of the inning -- by the skin of his teeth -- to earn his first save in Detroit's 2-1 win over the Mariners.
ImpactBenoit gave up a two-out double to Dustin Ackley with Justin Smoak on first base. Had it been the ninth inning, Smoak probably would have been gone for a pinch-runner. However, in the 14th, there was no one left to use. The Mariners tried to score Smoak on the double anyway, but the throw beat him easily and Smoak was unable to jar the ball loose, though he did his best to run over Pena at the plate. That gave Benoit a save, whether he deserved it or not.
Leyland confirms Benoit is the primary closer | 04/11/2013 11:24 AM
NewsTigers manager Jim Leyland reiterated Wednesday that Joaquin Benoit will be the primary ninth-inning man.
ImpactBut Leyland also left open the possibility that Phil Coke, Octavio Dotel and Al Alburquerque could still see random save opportunities. "On a lot of the days, if it's doable, I think Benoit is the most experienced and versatile enough against righties and lefties to pitch the ninth," Leyland told reporters. "But it's not going to be doable every day. You're liable to see anybody at any time."
Joaquin Benoit gives up homer in ninth | 04/09/2013 4:11 PM
NewsPitching the ninth in a five-run game, Joaquin Benoit gave up a homer and a double before finishing off the Blue Jays on Tuesday.
ImpactManager Jim Leyland talked about Benoit getting a chance in the closer's role Saturday because of his ability to get out righties and lefties. Except today Benoit gave up a long homer to a lefty in Colby Rasmus and then a double to a lefty pinch-hitter in Adam Lind. Things are obviously far from settled in the Detroit pen right now. Benoit is as good of a bet for saves as anyone, though.
Joaquin Benoit throws scoreless inning | 03/28/2013 4:38 PM
NewsJoaquin Benoit worked a scoreless inning Thursday to lower his spring ERA to 1.64.
ImpactBenoit has allowed two runs and posted a 12/3 K/BB ratio in 11 innings. It's still likely that the Tigers would prefer someone else step up in the closer's role, but Benoit is their most proven reliever and he's been as effective as anyone in the pen this spring. He's worth picking up in any leagues in which he's available.
Joaquin Benoit pitching well this spring | 03/17/2013 5:19 PM
NewsJoaquin Benoit pitched another scoreless inning Sunday to lower his spring ERA to 2.00.
ImpactThe Tigers ruled Benoit out as a closing candidate months ago, questioning his ability to bounce back after outings. Of course, he did struggle coming down the stretch last year, but he still pitched 71 innings and had a 3.68 ERA. And, as these things usually work, he'd almost certainly have a lesser workload as a closer than he would as a seventh- and eighth-inning guy. Anyway, manager Jim Leyland doesn't want him to close, but that doesn't mean he can't end up in the role should he perform well and the alternatives fail. He's not to be forgotten about.
Leyland dismisses Benoit as closer candidate | 01/27/2013 10:13 AM
NewsTigers manager Jim Leyland indicated Saturday that Joaquin Benoit isn't a candidate to close because he doesn't fare well pitching on back-to-back days.
Impact"Joaquin Benoit physically, I don't think he can do it," Leyland said. "With all due respect to Benoit, he doesn't bounce back." Benoit fared well in 2011 when pitching with no rest, but he did struggle last season, posting a 4.50 ERA and 1.41 WHIP. Leyland admitted that he doesn't "really know what I'm going to do" at closer, but it's no secret that the Tigers hope Bruce Rondon runs away with the job. "We do have some others who can do the job if he needs a break, but to me, the leading candidate is Rondon," general manager Dave Dombrowski said.
