|Flaws:||Bases on balls are his biggest issue. He also has a tendency to lose his focus and concentration. Can also be somewhat injury-riddled, which hinders his value slightly.|

NewsPhillies signed RHP A.J. Burnett to a one-year, $16 million contract.
ImpactThe deal also includes performance bonuses, a mutual/player option for 2015 and a limited no-trade clause. Most figured that Burnett would wind up back with the Pirates if he decided to continue playing, but the Phillies offered him a lot more money and he jumped at it. The veteran righty will settle in as a fine No. 3 starter behind Cole Hamels and Cliff Lee.
Bucs made $8.5 million offer to A.J. Burnett | 02/13/2014 11:08 AM
NewsAccording to John Perrotto of the Beaver County Times, the Pirates' marriage with A.J. Burnett ended last fall when the club offered him a one-year, $8.5 million deal.
Beaver County Times
ImpactBurnett was insulted by the offer, which would have represented a 47 percent paycut from his $16.5 million salary in 2013. The veteran right-hander had stated a desire to retire as a member of the Bucs, but he wound up taking a one-year, $16 million offer from the Phillies this week. Perrotto notes in the Beaver County Times that Pirates owner Bob Nutting recently bought his second ski resort. Pittsburgh's final offer to Burnett this winter was $12 million.
Pirates offered Burnett $12 million to return | 02/12/2014 8:57 PM
NewsJon Heyman of CBS Sports reports the Pirates offered A.J. Burnett $12 million to return for 2014.
Jon Heyman on Twitter
ImpactThe Phillies ultimately blew the Pirates out of the water with their $16 million offer, coaxing Burnett away from Pittsburgh. It would have been interesting to see how things would have played out if the Bucs had offered Burnett a $14.1 million qualifying offer earlier this offseason, but it was obviously a price they were unwilling to pay to retain the services of the 37-year-old. They'll roll with a rotation of Francisco Liriano, Gerrit Cole, Charlie Morton, Wandy Rodriguez and Edinson Volquez this season.
Burnett's deal with Phils carries 2015 option | 02/12/2014 5:55 PM
NewsAccording to Todd Zolecki of MLB.com, A.J. Burnett's new one-year, $16 million contract with the Phillies includes a mutual option for the 2015 season.
ImpactNo word yet on the value of that option. Burnett signed with the Phillies on Tuesday morning after being courted by the Nationals, Orioles, and Pirates. He posted an outstanding 3.30 ERA and 209/67 K/BB ratio in 191 innings last season for Pittsburgh and should maintain considerable fantasy value across the across the state in Philadelphia.

Burnett 'in discussions with multiple clubs' | 02/10/2014 11:25 PM
NewsFOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that A.J. Burnett is "in discussions with multiple clubs."
Ken Rosenthal on Twitter
ImpactRosenthal references Todd Zolecki of MLB.com's report that the Phillies are in on the right-hander, and he says the Pirates are "presumably another" club talking to Burnett. Indications to this point are that it will likely come down to those two teams, but Rosenthal's report suggests other squads could be in the mix, as well.
Phillies 'very much' still in on A.J. Burnett | 02/10/2014 10:38 PM
NewsTodd Zolecki of MLB.com reports that the Phillies are "very much still in the running" for A.J. Burnett.
ImpactGeneral manager Ruben Amaro indicated last week that the Phils were unlikely to make any big moves before Opening Day, but Zolecki says "the chances have improved" since then. Philadelphia's chief competition for Burnett is the Pirates, and it seems likely that they'll have to offer a notable sum more to talk the righty into leaving Pittsburgh.
Nationals to make late play for A.J. Burnett? | 02/07/2014 3:51 PM
NewsCBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that there is "speculation going around baseball circles" that the Nationals could consider a late play for A.J. Burnett.
ImpactIt's not what the Pirates want to hear after the Orioles and Phillies appear to have faded into the background. However, it does appear just to be speculation at this point, with one Nationals source telling Heyman that the club will "most likely" stick with what they have in their rotation. Burnett held a 3.30 ERA and 209/67 K/BB ratio in 191 innings last season for the Pirates.
A.J. Burnett to Orioles 'doesn't look good' | 02/07/2014 1:10 PM
NewsRoch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports that A.J. Burnett signing with the Orioles "doesn't look good."
Roch Kubatko on Twitter
ImpactKubatko notes that talks are "not dead but (the) feeling is he wants to pitch in (the) NL." The report comes on the heels of Phillies GM Ruben Amaro saying the club was likely done with their big moves. Given that those two teams and the Pirates have been seen as the favorites to sign Burnett, the odds of the right-hander winding up back in Pittsburgh appear to be increasing. He held a 3.30 ERA and 209/67 K/BB ratio in 191 innings last season for the Bucs.
Phillies unlikely to sign A.J. Burnett | 02/07/2014 10:30 AM
NewsPhillies general manager Ruben Amaro indicated Friday that the club is unlikely to sign A.J. Burnett.
Impact"I don't suspect we'll be doing anything," Amaro said. "I think we've got what we've got. I suspect we'll go into the season with what we've got - or at least spring training with what we've got. We're always looking, always trolling. I know there are guys out there, but I don't suspect us having anything major coming through." The competition for Burnett had reportedly been down to the Pirates, Orioles and Phillies, and it sounds like the Phils can be crossed off the list. Burnett supposedly would prefer to pitch in the National League, but the fact that he lives near Baltimore could push him to the American League.
Bucs, O's, Phils likely finalists for Burnett | 02/02/2014 10:12 AM
NewsNick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that "it's really looking like a Baltimore-Philadelphia-Pittsburgh runoff" for the services of A.J. Burnett.
ImpactBurnett has decided to pitch in 2014 and is willing to look at clubs other than the Pirates. The Blue Jays and Rays have also shown interest, but it's looking like a three-team race for the right-hander. Burnett has loyalty to the Pirates, but he lives just outside of Baltimore and Peter Gammons reported earlier this week that the Orioles are "all in" on the righty.
Blue Jays contemplaing Burnett reunion | 01/31/2014 10:46 PM
NewsAccording to TSN.ca, the Blue Jays could be contemplating a reunion with free agent hurler A.J. Burnett.
ImpactThe 37-year-old right-hander recently decided that he's planning to return for a 16th season, and he has generated significant interest from around the league. He previously pitched in Toronto from 2006-2008 where he posted a 3.94 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 525/191 K/BB ratio over 522 2/3 innings. For fantasy purposes, his value would take a big hit with a potential move to the American League East.
O's plan to top $100 million in payroll | 01/31/2014 1:27 PM
NewsFOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Orioles "remain in contact" with the agents for A.J. Burnett, Nelson Cruz and Fernando Rodney.
Ken Rosenthal on Twitter
ImpactHe also notes that they could pursue Ervin Santana or Ubaldo Jimenez if things don't work out with Burnett, who appears to be their No. 1 target at the moment. Rosenthal says the Orioles' payroll is now in the $85 million range, but they plan on it topping $100 million. Clearly they're intent on making some notable additions before spring training.
Report: O's all in on free agent A.J. Burnett | 01/30/2014 11:17 AM
NewsAccording to Peter Gammons of MLB Network, the Orioles are "all in" on free agent A.J. Burnett.
Peter Gammons on Twitter
ImpactIt was revealed earlier this week that Burnett will not retire and will instead open himself up to offers from all major league teams. The veteran right-hander makes his offseason home in Maryland, so a marriage with the O's seems like a perfect fit. Gammons also says the Rays have serious interest. Burnett, 37, posted a 3.30 ERA, 1.215 WHIP and 209/67 K/BB ratio in 191 innings last year for the Pirates.

ImpactBurnett stated at the end of the 2013 season that he was either going to retire or return for one final season in Pittsburgh, but he has apparently changed his mind. "I suspect he is going to open himself up to the market," a source told Travis Sawchik of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Burnett, 37, registered an outstanding 3.30 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 209/67 K/BB ratio in 191 innings last year for the Pirates.
A.J. Burnett yet to make decision | 01/24/2014 11:24 AM
NewsCBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that A.J. Burnett has yet to decide whether he'll pitch in 2014 or retire.
Jon Heyman on Twitter
ImpactBurnett is certainly dragging things out, but Heyman says the veteran right-hander "still has a bit of time" because "most free agent pitchers haven't decided on teams yet." Pirates president Frank Coonelly said Thursday that the club has "turned the page" on Burnett but also added that they'd "love to have him" if he ultimately decides to continue his career. The feeling is that Burnett will either pitch for the Pirates or retire, but the Orioles are also known to have interest in him.
Pirates 'turn the page' on A.J. Burnett | 01/23/2014 3:41 PM
NewsThe Pirates have "turned the page" on A.J. Burnett's departure, but they have the financial leeway to re-sign him if he decides to pitch next season, team president Frank Coonelly told ESPN.com.
Impact"We'd love to have A.J. back, but right now we've turned the page and we're heading to Bradenton (Fla.) thinking he's not going to be with us," Coonelly said. "But if he surprises us and calls up tomorrow and says he wants to pitch again, we'd love to have him." The 37-year-old Burnett went 10-11 with a 3.30 ERA and led Pittsburgh with 191 innings pitched and 209 strikeouts in 2013. He has said that he will either pitch for the Pirates in 2014 or retire.
Bucs still waiting on a decision from Burnett | 01/20/2014 10:24 AM
NewsPirates pitching coach Ray Searage reached out recently to free agent A.J. Burnett but has not heard back.
ImpactThe Pirates are still waiting for a decision from the 37-year-old right-hander, who stated earlier this winter that he will either retire or return for one more season in Pittsburgh. "I'm on that percentage point where he's not going to come back," Searage told a local sports radio show last week. "Right now I'm leaning that way, where he's going to retire." The Orioles are also lurking on the fringe for Burnett, who makes his offseason home in Maryland and wants to spend more time with his family.

Impact"I'm on that percentage point where he's not going to come back," Searage told the Fan Morning Show in Pittsburgh. "Right now I'm leaning that way, where he's going to retire." Burnett has stated that he'll either hang up his cleats for good or return to Pittsburgh for one more season, though the Orioles are known to be courting him. The 37-year-old right-hander posted an outstanding 3.30 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 209/67 K/BB ratio in 191 innings with the Bucs last season.
Orioles top priority remains finding starter | 01/04/2014 9:10 AM
NewsRoch Kubatko of MASN Sports believes that the Orioles top priority for the offseason remains adding a starting pitcher, with A.J. Burnett still their top option.
ImpactThe O's have been attempting to wait for Burnett's decision on whether he'll pitch in 2014 or not before exploring the rest of the market, but it appears they will start looking elsewhere as insurance. Executive vice president Dan Duquette confirmed as much, admitting that the team is "trying to find more pitchers" and would "do something to help the pitching staff between now and when we open".

Orioles waiting on A.J. Burnett before others | 12/14/2013 11:30 AM
NewsAccording to Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish, the Orioles are waiting on a response from A.J. Burnett before they pursue other free agent starting pitchers.
Chris Cotillo on Twitter
ImpactBurnett is very clearly their top target, but the veteran right-hander is taking his sweet time in determining whether or not he wants to pitch this season. Even if he does decide to return, he would be best served remaining in the National League instead of returning to the hard-hitting American League East.

A.J. Burnett still torn on whether to pitch | 12/10/2013 8:09 PM
NewsCBS Sports' Jon Heyman was told by a friend of A.J. Burnett's that the pitcher remains "torn" about whether to pitch in 2014.
Jon Heyman on Twitter
ImpactWe've only heard to this point that Burnett will either pitch for the Pirates or retire, but Heyman floats the possibility of him signing with the Orioles. It's not clear whether the O's are a real possibility or if Heyman is just speculating. Burnett posted a 3.30 ERA with an NL-leading 9.8 K/9 rate in 2013, so he'll have no shortage of suitors should be decide to consider other clubs.
Burnett yet to decide if he'll pitch in 2014 | 12/08/2013 10:58 AM
NewsA.J. Burnett has yet to decide whether he'll pitch in 2014 or retire.
ImpactBurnett has told the Pirates that he'll either pitch for them or retire, but the club is still waiting for a decision. "We're continuing to try to be respectful of the process," general manager Neal Huntington said. "This is a huge decision for A.J. I can't imagine there's anything worse for an athlete to hang it up a year too early. He's earned the right to take his time... But we will come to the point where A.J. will have to make a decision or we will have to make a decision."
Huntington says Pirates couldn't afford offer | 11/09/2013 12:53 PM
NewsPirates general manager Neal Huntington admitted Friday that the reason they didn't extend a qualifying offer to A.J. Burnett is that they didn't have room in the budget to afford him at $14.1 million.
ImpactHuntington did note that the team is interested in bringing back the veteran right-hander at a lower cost. Burnett is currently mulling over his options, and has stated that his preference to return to the Pirates, but also that he's considering retirement.
Burned out?: Burnett considering retirement | 11/05/2013 2:11 PM
NewsFree agent starting pitcher A.J. Burnett is considering retirement.
Impact"A.J. remains undecided," agent Darek Braunecker told the Tribune-Review. The Pirates elected not to extend the veteran hurler a $14.1 million qualifying offer. Burnett has stated that he'll either return to the Pirates or retire. "Nothing has changed in terms of our situation with A.J.," general manager Neal Huntington said. "This decision is not a reflection of our valuation of A.J. It's more a reflection of our desire to build a championship roster. A $14.1 million (offer) is a significant chunk of our estimated budget for next year."

Burnett has stated that he'll either return to the Pirates or retire, and it's possible that Pittsburgh could re-sign the right-hander to a lighter one-year contract.

NewsMLB.com's Tom Singer writes that, "in all likelihood," the Pirates will extend a $14.1 million qualifying offer to A.J. Burnett and he will accept.
ImpactBurnett says he'll either return to the Pirates or retire. Singer notes that accepting a qualifying offer will "buy both sides time to negotiate a new deal if he decided to go on." The right-hander posted a 3.41 ERA over the last two seasons and made $16.5 million each of the last five campaigns.
Pirates want to re-sign A.J. Burnett | 10/25/2013 12:19 PM
NewsPirates team president Frank Coonelly said Tuesday that the club has "made it clear" to impending free agent A.J. Burnett that they want to re-sign him.
ImpactBurnett has indicated that he'll either return to the Pirates or retire. The latter seems unlikely given that he'll turn just 37 in January and posted a 3.41 ERA while staying healthy the last two seasons. Burnett made $16.5 million each of the last five seasons, with the Yankees picking up $20 million of the $33 million the Pirates owed him the last two years.
Hurdle not naming Game 5 starter yet | 10/06/2013 9:08 AM
NewsPirates manager Clint Hurdle has yet to reveal who would be the team's starter in a potential Game 5 versus the Cardinals.
ImpactIt's A.J. Burnett's turn to pitch, but he was blasted for seven runs over just two innings in Game 1. Gerrit Cole dominated the Cards over six frames in Game 2 and would be on regular rest Wednesday, so it would be a surprise if the Pirates didn't go with the youngster. St. Louis would go with Adam Wainwright in a potential Game 5.

Burnett goes eight innings in win over Reds | 09/27/2013 10:16 PM
NewsA.J. Burnett spun eight innings of one-run ball in Friday's 4-1 win over the Reds.
ImpactBurnett was excellent, allowing just five hits and one walk while striking out six. He induced 13 ground balls in the victory while the lone run scored on a solo homer from Todd Frazier in the fourth inning. This was his fifth outing of seven innings or longer in his last eight starts, so the veteran right-hander has really been a horse for Pittsburgh down the stretch. He puts a bow on the regular season with a 3.32 ERA and 209 strikeouts over 191 innings. If the Pirates don't advance to the NLDS, there's a chance this could be the final start of his career, though he figures to get plenty of lucrative offers this winter.

ImpactHe walked one and scattered eight hits in his first complete-game of the season (and 23rd of his career). Burnett befuddled the NL's third-best offense, recording 15 ground ball outs (against just two fly ball outs) and holding Colorado without an extra-base hit. The Rockies scratched out a meaningless run in the seventh on two singles and a wild pitch when they already trailed 5-0. Burnett (5-7) is ninth in the NL with 141 strikeouts and eighth with a 2.73 ERA.

ImpactHe'll be making his return without going on a rehab assignment, as the Pirates were happy enough with how Burnett looked during a simulated game and bullpen sessions. Given that he hasn't started a game since June 8, he seems likely to be on a pitch count. Still, he'll be worth using in fantasy leagues against the Cubs' weak lineup.
A.J. Burnett could return on Sunday for Bucs | 07/05/2013 9:17 AM
NewsPirates manager Clint Hurdle said Thursday that A.J. Burnett (calf) could be activated from the disabled list to start on Sunday in Chicago.
ImpactBurnett was set to throw another bullpen session on Thursday, and as long as he comes out of it OK, he should get the ball on Sunday. If they decide to hold the righty back, Jeanmar Gomez would likely start. "We have all kinds of candidates [to start Sunday] but at least two jump in my mind," Hurdle said Thursday. "A.J. is going to go throw his second bullpen and we will have a conversation with him, so that is a possibility, and Jeanmar Gomez is a possibility."

ImpactBurnett felt good during a simulated game Tuesday and could decide to skip a rehab assignment if he still feels well on Wednesday. The right-hander has been out since early June with a strained right calf and would figure to be on a pitch count if he indeed skips a rehab assignment.

NewsA.J. Burnett (calf) will throw a simulated game on Tuesday.
ImpactBurnett was cleared for the simulated game after completing a 38-pitch bullpen session on Friday with no issues. "I think we're happy with his progress so far, absolutely," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "That's our biggest question, his ability to get off the mound, cover first, balls over there, bunt play, anything of that nature. We'll recreate some of those challenges for him." Though the Pirates wouldn't reveal the next step, Burnett seems likely to begin a rehab assignment soon if Tuesday's sim game goes well.

A.J. Burnett 'has been nowhere near a mound' | 06/19/2013 8:49 PM
NewsPirates manager Clint Hurdle said A.J. Burnett (calf) "has been nowhere near a mound" since being placed on the disabled list.
ImpactBurnett hasn't pitched since June 8, and it appears he's not terribly close to being activated. "We're working on flexibility, mobility and strengthening," Hurdle said. "That's not to say that can't change in another 24 hours with A.J. He's really tried to not do some things at all and do a lot of things. As far as his rehab goes, he didn't want to do anything as far as moving around other than strengthening, loosening and working on the flexion part of it."
