ImpactMartinez said that his knees felt great after Friday's game. Even with a few games behind the plate however, he is unlikely to retain his catcher eligibility in most fantasy leagues for 2014, sapping his value in most formats.

V-Mart warms up in catching gear | 08/21/2013 3:31 PM
NewsVictor Martinez warmed up in catching gear on Wednesday.
Matthew Mowery on Twitter
ImpactVery interesting. V-Mart has been the Tigers' emergency catcher all season, but he hasn't been warming up in catching gear until now. The Tigers will play under National League rules this weekend against the Mets, so perhaps we could see him get some work behind the plate. The 34-year-old hasn't caught a game since August 4, 2011.

NewsVictor Martinez went 2-for-3 with two walks and a run scored in Sunday's 3-2, 12-inning victory against the White Sox.
ImpactHe went 0-for-7 in the series' first two games. V-Mart was positively dreadful in April and May, but a respectable June led to an onslaught in July in which the veteran catcher slashed .390/.429/.581 and collected 20 RBI in 105 at-bats. He entered play on Sunday batting .339/.362 /.482 in the second half. Martinez needs to be active in all formats while he's scorching hot.

ImpactIt was one of three longballs the Tigers had on the day -- Torii Hunter and Brayan Pena had the others -- but they got out-slugged by the White Sox. Martinez is batting .398 over his last 23 games, upping his average from .225 to a much more respectable .267 in the process.

Chris Iott on Twitter

NewsVictor Martinez is not in Wednesday's lineup against the Pirates.
Chris Iott on Twitter
ImpactHe'll take a seat since the DH isn't available under National League rules. Tigers manager Jim Leyland hasn't said anything about him playing first base on Thursday, so it would be a good idea to have a backup plan in place in daily leagues.
Martinez goes 2-for-5 with a double, two RBI | 05/28/2013 4:11 AM
NewsVictor Martinez went 2-for-5 with a double, two RBI and a run scored in Monday's victory against the Pirates.
ImpactDon't look now, but V-Mart has a five-game hitting streak going. The veteran designated hitter still sits at an anemic .230/.277/.310 slash line, but he's been unlucky in a few peripherals, including BABIP, and we're confident his recent success represents a harbinger of better things to come.

He's also yet to go deep and has just two doubles. The important thing is that he feels healthy, so he represents a nice buy-low opportunity if his owner is selling.

Leyland reassures that Martinez is 'fine' | 03/03/2013 12:08 AM
NewsTigers manager Jim Leyland said he is "backing off" of using Victor Martinez as much as he has early in spring but reiterated that the designated hitter is "fine."
Detroit Free Press
ImpactMartinez, 34, missed the entire 2012 season while recovering a torn ACL in his left knee, so Leyland is just being cautious with his veteran. The switch-hitting former catcher will be charged with protecting Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder in the Tigers lineup, a spot that will most certainly come with plenty of RBI opportunities in 2013.
Victor Martinez goes 3-for-3, homers | 02/24/2013 6:39 PM
NewsVictor Martinez went 3-for-3 with a homer off Roy Hallday in a tie game between the Tigers and Phillies on Sunday.

V-Mart (knee) pleased with spring debut | 02/22/2013 5:45 PM
NewsVictor Martinez (knee) felt good after making his Grapefruit League debut Friday against the Braves.
ImpactIn his first game action since knee surgery last year, V-Mart served as the DH and went 0-for-2 with a hit-by-pitch. "Honestly, I'm not really thinking about the knee," said Martinez. "I'm just letting the fans know, I'm not thinking about it. I come to spring training now like I used to be: just getting ready to get to the season." Projected to be the Tigers' No. 5 hitter this season, Martinez could prove to be a real bargain in fantasy leagues where he still qualifies at the catcher position.
V-Mart plans to be available at catcher | 02/13/2013 11:49 AM
NewsVictor Martinez (knee) said Wednesday that he plans to be available at catcher during interleague play.
Impact"I'm still catching," said Martinez, who is working his way back from left knee surgery. "I don't see the reason why not. I always work hard to play. I always work hard to catch. I've always been in the shape that I am right now. I don't see any reason. But we'll take it slow. It's the first day." Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski recently said that V-Mart won't catch at all in 2013, but manager Jim Leyland didn't completely rule out the possibility when asked on Wednesday. Still, we're guessing he would only get a look behind the plate in an emergency situation.
Victor Martinez 'looks unbelievable' | 02/08/2013 10:33 AM
NewsTigers hitting coach Lloyd McClendon said Victor Martinez (knee) has looked "unbelievable" at the plate during early hitting at the Tigers' spring training complex.
Impact"Victor looks unbelievable," McClendon said. "I am really, really impressed with what I've seen. He's in great shape, and he's swinging the bat extremely well. A lot of zip, a lot of pop, it doesn't look like he's lost anything." V-Mart missed all of 2012 while recovering from microfracture surgery on his left knee, but it sounds like he's back to normal and ready for a big bounce-back season.

Impact"I'm ready to go, man," said V-Mart. "I'm ready to go." The 34-year-old slugger has already reported to the Tigers' spring training complex in Lakeland, Florida and is quickly rounding into a massive fantasy sleeper for 2013. He hit .330/.380/.470 with 12 home runs and 103 RBI in 145 games with the Tigers in 2011 before missing all of 2012 due to knee troubles.

Jim Duquette on Twitter
ImpactV-Mart missed all of 2012 while recovering from surgery to repair a torn ACL and is expected to serve as the club's primary designated hitter in 2013. Meanwhile, Alex Avila and Brayan Pena will handle catching duties. Fortunately Martinez is still catcher-eligible in most fantasy leagues, though his value will likely take a big hit going into 2014.
V-Mart (knee) begins running program | 01/15/2013 2:49 PM
NewsVictor Martinez (knee) began a running program Friday.
FOX Sports Detroit
Impact"Victor is not running at full speed, but he is running very well," said Tigers head athletic trainer Kevin Rand. V-Mart is doing low-volume work right now, but will progress to higher-volume work in time. The Tigers plan to take it easy with him during spring training, but the expectation is that he'll be ready on Opening Day. While Martinez is poised to serve as the club's primary DH in 2013, he still holds significant fantasy value because of his catcher-eligibility.

Jon Morosi on Twitter

Victor Martinez doing well in recovery | 01/11/2013 10:43 AM
NewsTigers head athletic trainer Kevin Rand said Victor Martinez (knee) has "been hitting for a bit more than a month" and "will initiate a baserunning program (Friday)."
ImpactMartinez, of course, is coming back from microfracture surgery on his left knee, but he's not expected to be limited during spring training and will be the regular DH for the Tigers in 2013. "He's doing real, real well," Rand said. "He's been hitting for a bit more than a month, from soft-toss swings to regular swings, feeling real well, and with no issues. He's been doing a running progression that's up to 20 minutes, again, without any issues. And he will initiate a baserunning program (Friday)."
