|Assets:||His slider can devastate both righties and lefties. Adds a sinking fastball, some deception and a bulldog mentality when on the mound. Can rack up good strikeout totals when on his game. Adds some leadership qualities.|
|Flaws:||Sometimes his abundant energy gets in the way; he'll find himself too pumped up early on and get knocked around. Has problems with his command and gets in homer trouble when he leaves his fastball up in the zone.|
|Career Potential:||Veteran right-hander.|

Alex Speier on Twitter
ImpactDempster has also cited wanting to spend more time with his family as a reason not to pitch this season. The 36-year-old hasn't ruled out the possibility of returning in 2015. The Red Sox will place Dempster on the restricted list, which means they won't have to pay him his $13.25 million salary.
Ryan Dempster will not pitch this season | 02/16/2014 10:37 AM

Ken Rosenthal on Twitter
Impact"I don't feel like I am capable of performing to the ability and standard that I am accustomed to," Dempster said. "I feel it's in the best interest of both the club but most importantly myself to step away from playing baseball at this time. The time is right. I'm not saying retirement but I definitely won't be playing this season." The Red Sox will place Dempster on the restricted list, which means they won't have to pay him his $13.25 million salary in 2014. Dempster's decision cements Felix Doubront's status as the No. 5 starter.

NewsRyan Dempster allowed two runs over six innings in a no-decision against the Orioles on Tuesday.

Instead, he remains 8-9 with a 4.70 ERA through 28 starts heading into his start against the Orioles next week.

NewsRyan Dempster or Felix Doubront will be removed from the rotation following Clay Buchholz's (shoulder) return.
Sean McAdam on Twitter
ImpactThe speculation to this point is that Dempster is probably the most vulnerable, as he has the worst numbers and also has plenty of relief experience. Buchholz is rejoining the rotation on Tuesday.
Dempster goes six innings to earn win No. 8 | 09/04/2013 11:12 PM
NewsRyan Dempster allowed four runs over six innings in a win against the Tigers on Wednesday.
ImpactDempster wasn't stellar but he didn't need to be, as the Red Sox offense provided him with 20 runs in support. He was plenty good enough, though, allowing six hits and two walks while fanning seven. He'll look to make it three wins in a row Tuesday against the Rays in Tampa.
Dempster gives up three runs in return | 08/30/2013 10:44 PM
NewsRyan Dempster allowed three runs over 6 1/3 innings in Friday's win over the White Sox.
ImpactHis first start since his suspension for hitting Alex Rodriguez, Dempster held the White Sox to one run over the first six innings before running out of gas in the seventh. The veteran right-hander struck out five and walked three in the victory and now sits at 7-9 with a 4.75 ERA through 26 starts this season. His rotation spot could be in jeopardy when Clay Buchholz comes off the disabled list.

NewsRyan Dempster will make his next start next Friday against the White Sox.

NewsRyan Dempster will not appeal his five-game suspension and will begin serving it Tuesday.

NewsMLB has suspended Ryan Dempster for five games and fined him an undisclosed amount for intentionally throwing at Alex Rodriguez on Sunday.
MLB PR on Twitter
ImpactNo word yet on whether he'll appeal. It's worth noting that the Red Sox have upcoming off-days on Thursday and Monday, so they should be able to get by just fine if he begins serving the suspension immediately. In the end, it's not much of a punishment. Yankees manager Joe Girardi was also fined an undisclosed amount for his actions during Sunday's game.
MLB deciding on punishment for Dempster | 08/20/2013 10:59 AM
NewsJoel Sherman of the New York Post reports that MLB will announce a decision Tuesday on how Ryan Dempster will be punished for hitting Alex Rodriguez with a pitch Sunday.
Joel Sherman on Twitter
ImpactDempster claimed after the game that he was just trying to pitch Rodriguez inside, but it was pretty easy to see the intent behind it. He's likely looking at a brief suspension for his actions.
Dempster rebounds for strong start Tuesday | 08/13/2013 11:18 PM
NewsRyan Dempster allowed one run over seven innings in a no-decision against the Blue Jays on Tuesday.
ImpactDempster muddled through two poor starts prior to this one, but the right-hander allowed just four hits and two walks in his seven innings on Tuesday. It was the first time Dempter lasted at least seven innings since June 14. He'll try to keep the train rolling when he faces the Yankees on Sunday.
Dempster allows five runs in start vs. Astros | 08/08/2013 12:39 AM
NewsRyan Dempster allowed five runs over six innings in a no-decision against the Astros on Wednesday.
ImpactDempster was actually able to do some good things on Wednesday, as he struck out seven batters while not issuing a walk. Still, five runs against a bad Astros offense can hardly be considered a success. He didn't factor in the decision, remaining at 6-8 with a 4.67 ERA this season. He'll face the Blue Jays in Toronto on Tuesday.
Dempster has 7.20 ERA over last four starts | 08/02/2013 9:42 AM
NewsRyan Dempster has a 7.20 ERA in 20 innings over his last four starts.
ImpactHe's given up 21 runs -- 16 earned -- on 30 hits and 12 walks in that span. Dempster was tagged for seven runs in six innings by the Mariners on Thursday, including a fifth inning grand slam by .178-hitting backup catcher Henry Blanco. "I've just got to execute better pitches,?? Dempster said after the game. Currently 6-8 with a 4.54 ERA, Dempster isn't worth using in mixed leagues until he turns it around.
Ryan Dempster gives up seven runs | 08/01/2013 11:11 PM
NewsRyan Dempster was tagged for seven runs in six innings by the Mariners on Thursday.
ImpactAn erratic strike zone from David Rackley played a role in Dempster's struggles; he didn't deserve all five walks he issued. That's not to say he was any good, though. Even his better outings lately have been pretty mediocre; it's been a month and a half since he completed seven innings and three months since he escaped an outing allowing one or no runs. He's currently 6-8 with a 4.54 ERA.
Dempster limits O's to two runs for sixth win | 07/27/2013 11:22 PM
NewsRyan Dempster allowed two runs over 5 1/3 innings to earn the win against the Orioles on Saturday.
ImpactDempster was pitching without his best stuff but pitched around six hits and two walks for the victory. He struck out four on the night, picking up his first win since June 25. Even so, the right-hander is just 6-8 with a 4.24 ERA this year. He'll take the mound again Thursday against the Mariners.
Dempster allows three runs in no-decision | 07/22/2013 12:54 AM
NewsRyan Dempster lasted just 5 1/3 innings in Sunday night's win over the Yankees.
ImpactDempster was originally scheduled to start Monday, but was moved up to start in place of Jon Lester. He allowed three runs on six hits and gave up four walks before being removed in the sixth-inning at 98 pitches. Despite leaving the game with a two-run lead, he was forced to settle for a no-decision. Dempster will make his next start Friday vs. the Orioles.
Ryan Dempster struggles, but Red Sox win | 07/11/2013 8:37 PM
NewsRyan Dempster was chased after allowing seven runs -- four earned -- over just 3 2/3 frames against the Mariners Thursday, but the Red Sox won in extra innings 8-7.
ImpactDempster came into the day having allowed no more than three runs in each of his last eight starts, but he was off from the get-go in this one. The righty struck out four but served up nine hits, walked one and hit a batter. He finishes the first half with an underwhelming 4.24 ERA and 1.43 WHIP.
Ryan Dempster picks up sixth win | 06/30/2013 5:03 PM
NewsRyan Dempster lasted just 5 1/3 innings but allowed only two runs in Sunday's 5-4 win over the Blue Jays.
ImpactHe gave up seven hits, walked three and struck out a pair. Dempster looked to be well on his way to a seventh straight quality start, but he was pulled with the bases loaded and one out in the sixth. The move looked like a wise one after Craig Breslow got a popup and a strikeout to escape further damage. He missed out on his sixth win when the Jays tied things up in the ninth. Dempster will take a 4.11 ERA and 1.38 WHIP into Anaheim next weekend.
Dempster holds Rockies down for fifth win | 06/26/2013 12:09 AM
NewsRyan Dempster allowed two runs in six innings to earn the win against the Rockies on Tuesday.
ImpactIt was more along the lines of what we expect to see from Dempster, as he allowed six hits and two walks while striking out four. The win was his first in three starts, and he moved to 5-8 with a 4.15 ERA on the year. A start against the Blue Jays on Sunday is next on the docket.
Ryan Dempster falls to 4-8 with loss to Rays | 06/19/2013 11:12 PM
NewsRyan Dempster allowed three runs over six innings to take the loss against the Rays on Wednesday.
ImpactThe outing was similar to Dempster's other starts recently, as he's turned in quality starts in his last five outings. Despite the "quality" label, Wednesday's was mostly forgettable, as he allowed eight hits and two walks in his six innings of work. He'll take on the Rockies in his next time out on Tuesday.
Dempster gives up two runs in loss to O's | 06/14/2013 10:04 PM
NewsRyan Dempster allowed two runs in 7 2/3 innings Friday in a loss to the Orioles.
ImpactThings could have been much worse, as Dempster allowed five hits and walked five batters. Still, he managed to minimize the damage and keep the Red Sox in the ballgame. The veteran right-hander has bounced back after a recent rough stretch and should be a decent enough fourth or fifth starter in mixed leagues moving forward. He lines up to face the Tigers next week in Detroit.
Dempster goes seven, earns win over Rangers | 06/04/2013 10:28 PM
NewsRyan Dempster allowed three runs over seven innings to pick up the win over the Rangers on Tuesday.
ImpactDempster wasn't perfect but he didn't have to be, as the Red sox put up 17 runs in support of the right-hander. All three of the runs Dempster allowed came via the home run, but he was otherwise solid. The win was his first in a month, and after a rough May the turning of the calendar may benefit the 36-year-old. He'll start again Sunday against the Angels.
Dempster allows only two runs but Sox lose | 05/28/2013 9:49 PM
NewsRyan Dempster allowed two earned runs in seven innings Tuesday in Boston's loss to the Phillies.
ImpactIt was actually one of Dempster's better outings since the end of April but the Red Sox offense could muster only one run. Dempster yielded six hits and three walks while striking out four. The veteran right-hander will carry a 4.45 ERA and 1.39 WHIP into his next scheduled outing against the rival Yankees.
Ryan Dempster gives up four runs to Tribe | 05/23/2013 10:54 PM
NewsRyan Dempster was pulled after giving up four runs in three innings Thursday against the Indians.
ImpactDempster has been toughed up in three straight outings (15 earned runs in 12 2/3 innings) after opening the season with a 2.93 ERA in seven starts. He's not going to be worth using in mixed leagues until he turns it around.
Dempster allows five runs but Sox beat Twins | 05/18/2013 11:32 PM
NewsRyan Dempster allowed five earned runs over 4 2/3 innings but the Red Sox beat the Twins on Saturday.
ImpactDempster was let off the hook by the Boston offense, which rattled off 12 runs in a rout of Minnesota. Dempster yielded eight hits and six walks, throwing only 68 of his 127 pitches for strikes. He now has a pedestrian 4.27 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in 52 2/3 innings, though we wouldn't give up on him quite yet because the strikeout rate is tremendous. Dempster will face the Indians next.
Ryan Dempster shelled in loss to Blue Jays | 05/12/2013 4:58 PM
NewsRyan Dempster was shelled for six earned runs in five innings Sunday as the Red Sox fell to the Blue Jays.
ImpactDempster was in trouble all afternoon, allowing two runs in the second inning, one run in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth. It was his worst start of the season, statistically, and ballooned his ERA from 2.93 to 3.75. The veteran righty will try to bounce back next week against the Twins.
Dempster strikes out eight in loss to Twins | 05/07/2013 10:26 PM
NewsRyan Dempster struck out eight while allowing four runs -- two earned -- over seven-plus innings, but he took the loss to the Twins on Tuesday.
ImpactDempster actually lowered his ERA to 2.93 in the loss, so it's not as though he got shelled in the outing. Unfortunately his offense didn't give him much support, so the right-hander was denied a win for his efforts. Dempster has been a surprise for fantasy owners this year, and he'll get another shot at picking up a victory Sunday against the Blue Jays.
Ryan Dempster Ks 10 in win over Astros | 04/26/2013 11:37 PM
NewsRyan Dempster matched a season-high with 10 strikeouts Friday while allowing two runs in six innings in a 7-3 win over the Astros.
ImpactIt was his first win of the season. Dempster walked three and held the Astros to just four hits. The runs scored on an RBI ground out and a sacrifice fly. Perhaps spending his first full season in the American League will catch up to him eventually, but it hasn't mattered so far. With 43 strikeouts in 30 innings, only Yu Darvish (49) has fanned more batters. He'll carry a 3.30 ERA into a start against the Blue Jays next week.
Ryan Dempster whiffs eight | 04/22/2013 1:33 PM
NewsRyan Dempster struck out eight but fell to 0-2 Sunday when he allowed four runs over seven frames against the Royals.
ImpactDempster gave up six hits, including an Alcides Escobar home run, and walked three. Despite not having a win to show for it, the veteran right-hander has been quite good this season, striking out 33 over 24 innings while putting up a 3.38 ERA and 1.12 WHIP. He has a good shot to get in the win column next weekend against the Astros.
Dempster fans 10 over seven in Red Sox win | 04/15/2013 2:15 PM
NewsRyan Dempster tossed seven innings of one-run ball Monday as the Red Sox defeated the visiting Rays.
ImpactDempster was locked in and facing a slumping Rays lineup on Patriots' Day at Fenway Park. He finished with 10 strikeouts, allowing only two hits and two walks to the 24 batters he faced. The veteran right-hander has a 2.65 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 25/8 K/BB ratio over 17 innings this season. He will get the Royals next.
Dempster fans seven in no-decision Wednesday | 04/10/2013 10:54 PM
NewsRyan Dempster allowed three runs -- one earned -- in five innings but the Red Sox lost to the Orioles on Wednesday.
ImpactThe numbers look nice, but Dempster was inefficient in lasting only five innings for the Sox. He's now struck out 15 batters in 10 innings, a nice surprise for owners of the 35-year-old. He'll next start Monday against the Rays, another lineup against which he could find some success.
Ryan Dempster loses to Yankees | 04/04/2013 10:05 PM
NewsRyan Dempster took a loss in his Red Sox debut after giving up three runs in five innings Thursday against the Yankees.
ImpactDempster struck out eight, but three hits amounted to two runs in the second and Brett Gardner added a solo homer in the third. These kinds of outings should be the norm for Dempster. He won't be bad, but he probably won't help fantasy teams in ERA and WHIP.
Ryan Dempster struggles in loss to Twins | 03/08/2013 9:57 PM
NewsRyan Dempster struggled in Friday's loss to the Twins, surrendering two runs on five hits over 3 2/3 innings.
ImpactOn the bright side, he did display good command on the evening, issuing zero free passes while fanning two. He's yet to walk a batter in 8 2/3 innings this spring, and his velocity has been right around his career norm. His struggles as a member of the Rangers in 2012 could depress his value in fantasy drafts, making Dempster a nice potential value in the middle rounds.
Ryan Dempster goes three scoreless | 03/03/2013 6:29 PM
NewsRyan Dempster pitched three scoreless innings, striking out two, against the Yankees on Sunday.
ImpactDempster decided to settle in for the Red Sox rather than pitch for Canada in the World Baseball Classic. He's allowed just one hit in five scoreless innings so far this spring.
Dempster will not pitch for Canada in WBC | 01/12/2013 5:19 PM
NewsRyan Dempster was not listed on Team Canada's provisional WBC roster released on Saturday.
Pete Abraham on Twitter
ImpactThis doesn't come as a tremendous surprise, as Dempster indicated last month that he would likely pass on the WBC. It's encouraging to see that his main goal this offseason is to get himself ready to pitch for the Red Sox.
