Drafted:Signed by Florida in 1994.
|Assets:||Is very good defensively, with both range and a strong arm. Has legitimate home-run pop in his bat and can be a solid RBI producer. Has developed more consistency (both offensively and defensively) with age.|
|Flaws:||Is highly injury-prone. Swings for the fences too much, leading to streakiness and high strikeout totals. Doesn't have much patience at the plate, so his walk/strikeout ratio is usually ugly. Struggles when he plays too much.|
|Career Potential:||Good defensive infielder with home-run pop.|

Shortstop Alex Gonzalez released by Tigers | 04/20/2014 10:32 AM
NewsTigers released SS Alex Gonzalez.
ImpactWell, that didn't last long. Desperate for a replacement for Jose Iglesias, the Tigers traded Steve Lombardozzi for Gonzalez in a late-spring deal. The veteran infielder wound up lasting just three weeks, as he hit just .167/.219/.233 while showing diminished range in the field. The Tigers will go with Andrew Romine and Danny Worth at shortstop.
Alex Gonzalez hits walkoff RBI single vs. KC | 03/31/2014 4:29 PM
NewsAlex Gonzalez hit a walkoff RBI single in the Tigers' 4-3 defeat of the Royals on Opening Day.
ImpactGonzalez smacked an RBI triple in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game at 3-3 and then played the role of hero in the bottom of the ninth against Greg Holland, one of the best closers in the game. It was a nice debut for the veteran shortstop, but he's far from an attractive fantasy option. Gonzalez, 37, hit .177/.203/.230 in 118 plate appearances last season for the Brewers.

NewsTigers acquired INF Alex Gonzalez from the Orioles for INF Steve Lombardozzi.

ImpactThe Tigers recently lost starting shortstop Jose Iglesias to dual leg fractures and are now scrambling to fill the vacancy. Gonzalez, 37, batted just .177/.203/.230 in 118 plate appearances last season for the Brewers and had to settle for a minor league contract this winter from the O's. He's not a very exciting option for Detroit.

NewsAlex Gonzalez underwent an endoscopy after concerns arose over a physical.
Roch Kubatko on Twitter
ImpactGonzalez is anemic and needed to take iron pills, which caused the irregularity with his blood. The veteran infielder will be fine and has a shot to crack the Opening Day roster with Manny Machado (knee) likely to begin the year on the DL.
Alex Gonzalez hits first spring homer | 03/08/2014 4:20 PM
NewsNon-roster infielder Alex Gonzalez hit a two-run homer Saturday against the Red Sox.
ImpactWith Manny Machado seemingly likely to start off on the DL, Gonzalez has a chance of making the Orioles. Really, though, he might be more useful somewhere else. He was injured and miscast in Milwaukee last year, but he still has value as a backup infielder.
Orioles bring in veteran INF Alex Gonzalez | 01/31/2014 12:29 PM
NewsOrioles signed INF Alex Gonzalez to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Ken Rosenthal on Twitter
ImpactGonzalez, who will turn 37 in a couple weeks, batted just .177/.203/.230 over 41 games for the Brewers last season before being released in June. The veteran infielder played some third and first base last season and could crack the Orioles' Opening Day roster as a backup infielder.
Brewers release INF Alex Gonzalez | 06/03/2013 12:12 PM
NewsBrewers released INF Alex Gonzalez.
ImpactGonzalez was given his outright release after batting just .177/.203/.230 with one home run through his first 41 games. The move clears a spot for the recently-acquired Juan Francisco on the active roster.
Gonzalez has two-run double in win | 05/24/2013 11:11 PM
NewsAlex Gonzalez delivered a two-run double in Friday's win over the Pirates.
ImpactThe Brewers couldn't get anything else going against A.J. Burnett and company, but it was enough for the victory. With the double, Gonzalez collected his first RBI since way back on May 2. The 36-year-old infielder is hitting just .188/.217/.248 through 37 games this season and can be ignored in most fantasy leagues.

Alex Gonzalez out with hamstring injury | 04/29/2013 8:22 PM
NewsAlex Gonzalez is sitting out for the second straight game Monday due to a tight left hamstring.
ImpactGonzalez expects to be back in the lineup on Tuesday. "It's just kind of tightness," Gonzalez said. "It feels like when you get hit with a ball and you touch it. I'll have two nights off and I'll be back tomorrow. It's no big deal." Yuniesky Betancourt is at third base Monday, with Martin Maldonado covering first.
Alex Gonzalez scores three times | 04/27/2013 1:34 AM
NewsAlex Gonzalez went 3-for-4 and scored three times against the Dodgers on Friday.

Tom Haudricourt on Twitter
ImpactX-rays came back negative, which has the Brewers' breathing a sigh of relief after all of the injuries they have had to deal with in the infield. He should be considered day-to-day, but seems like he'll avoid a trip to the disabled list.
Alex Gonzalez leaves after hit by pitch | 04/12/2013 9:24 PM
NewsAlex Gonzalez has been removed from Friday's game after getting hit on the hand by a pitch in the second inning.
Andrew Gruman on Twitter
ImpactGonzalez remained in the game for a few innings before eventually coming out. Yuniesky Betancourt moved over to third base and Blake Lalli took over at first base. The Brewers can ill-afford another injury in the infield, so hopefully this turns out to be only a minor issue.
Alex Gonzalez to start at 1B with Hart out | 03/10/2013 8:55 AM
NewsAlex Gonzalez is expected to be the Brewers' Opening Day first baseman.
ImpactAll 1,903 of Gonzalez's games as a professional have come as a shortstop, but the Brewers are lacking options following the knee injuries to Corey Hart and Mat Gamel. The veteran infielder admits to not feeling comfortable at the position yet. "I can tell you it's not easy," he said. "You have to move around. It's totally different (from shortstop). I try to make adjustments and relax and let things happen. I'm doing the best I can."
Dodgers pursued Alex Gonzalez to play third | 02/22/2013 8:55 PM
NewsAccording to Adam McCalvy of MLB.com, the Dodgers pursued Alex Gonzalez this offseason to play third base, before he eventually signed with the Brewers.
ImpactThe idea would have been for Gonzalez to play some third base, and to "push" shortstop Hanley Ramirez. This could mean that the Dodgers aren't entirely confident that Luis Cruz can handle the hot corner for the entire season.
Brewers to give Gonzalez work at first base | 02/09/2013 6:44 PM
NewsBrewers manager Ron Roenicke said Saturday that he wants Alex Gonzalez to get some work in a first base, potentially serving as the backup to Mat Gamel there until Corey Hart is ready to return from the DL.
ImpactIn his 14-year career, Gonzalez has played exclusively at shortstop, but could be able to make the transition defensively. It would also be a way to get his powerful bat in the lineup more often, especially against tough left-handers.
Brewers finalize one-year deal with Gonzalez | 02/06/2013 2:50 PM
NewsBrewers signed INF Alex Gonzalez to a one-year, $1.5 million contract.
ImpactFOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported last week that Gonzalez could earn an additional $1 million with incentives. The soon-to-be 36-year-old appeared in just 24 games last season prior to undergoing surgery to repair a torn ACL in his right knee. He's expected to function as a backup to 22-year-old Jean Segura.
